Lady of Lament
~Elena Goodwin~
Elena awoke wearily, feeling sluggish and tired like usual. She was never a morning person, mainly because she would stay up reading book after book. She found herself interested in fictional stories that was based in a fantasy world with action and adventure-- and perhaps a twinge of romance. She honestly enjoyed books too much. After all, it took away time that could be used to socialize with the residents of the village. Despite that, Elena kept to herself in her own little personal bubble away from the outside world. Unfortunately for her though, she wouldn't get the pleasure of remaining in her peaceful, quiet bliss. She couldn't keep waiting like this. She had her job as a waitress, and she was already late enough-- not that she thought Richard would care.
The two seemed to get along, despite the fact that he drank way too damn much. It worked out mainly because she wouldn't criticize his alcohol addiction; plus, she hardly spoke to him. Though they had an unspoken understanding between them. He understood that she wasn't the talkative type nor was she the drinking type, and she seemed to understand that he needed to drink. She didn't understand his reasons though. She assumed that either he had reasons similar to her depressed father, or he merely needed to drink just to get him through the day. Either way, she didn't care anymore. As long as she didn't have to live with it, she didn't mind all the alcohol at work.
Elena rose up from her small bed before getting dressed for work. She worked as a waitress at the village's local inn/pub, and despite the fact that she didn't like being around alcohol, she found the pay to be decent enough. After all, it kept food on the table. She dispersed her thoughts before grabbing her small bag, throwing in a couple of her own personal items. She slung the bag over her shoulder, nearly walking out the door until a thought crossed her mind. She had almost forgotten about her books that she recently finished, and considering she was already going out to the Pub/Inn, she might as well drop off the library books to Atticus.
She didn't particularly know Atticus all too well. Then again, she hardly knew anyone in town. She was still unfamiliar with her coworkers, but that didn't seem to matter to her all that much. As long as she had the company of her favorite books and a nice, quiet place, she could settle for no friends. She was used to that anyway. Though Atticus and her were a bit awkward at times. The two rarely spoke, despite her many appearances at the library. They were both just too quiet and shy for their own good, but Elena considered him a good person. After all, he had never given her any trouble, and he usually gave her suggestions as to what she might like to read next.
She gathered the books in her arms, placing them in her bag carefully before heading on out the door to be greeted with cool, crisp air. She truly enjoyed nature, and she had hoped that maybe she would manage to get a better job than the one she currently had. She wanted to fix up her small place. It appeared worn and old, run down even. The only thing that appeared somewhat nice was the yard. When she had previously started renting the place, the grass had been overgrown with weeds and the faded white fence needed repairs in some areas. There were a couple of bushes that needed to be trimmed down, as well as some as the trees. She didn't mind the work though. One day, she would either buy the place and fix it up to her expectations, or she would simply find a better place to call home. The thing she wanted most was a small garden. It didn't have to be anything fancy, but she truly enjoyed nature's beauty. Though her dreams would soon wither away.
She had little education and experience in the workfield considering she never finished high school, much less the thought of even going to college. She inwardly mocked at the idea. She would never get to that point. Perhaps that's why she enjoyed books so much. It allowed her to envy fictional characters that somehow managed to struggle through such turmoils and their own personal problems in order to acheive something greater for themselves and others.
She sighed wearily at the thought. Pointless dreams. She then made her way into their quiet, serene town-- though much to her dismay, she discovered quite the opposite. She could hear a lot of commotion at the pub, making her hesitate. Maybe... Maybe she could get to work just a little later than usual. Then again, she doubted they would notice whether or not she was there. She turned back on her heel before making her way to the library. Atticus should be there, ready for the day. She felt a bit relieved that she wouldn't have to deal with so much drama just yet as she entered the library, fixing her lavender gaze on the librarian as she heard the small bell ring, signaling that someone had entered the library. She appeared cold and distant, but the truth was that she was just a quiet person. She wasn't cruel to anyone. She just.. had one of those expressions. Nonetheless, she gave a small, quiet wave, finding herself at a loss of words as she approached the counter. Instead of trying to formulate words, she briskly removed her bag, digging into it before pulling out the three novels she had finished. She slid them over to him before speaking, "I just came to return these... Anything new that I might want to read?" She asked him, a bit to nervous for her liking. She held her bag close to her, fidgeting with it slightly. If he didn't have anything new or no suggestions, she could always come back later to find something for herself. Or maybe she could reread one of her favorites, not that it was out of the norm for her.
