Josh really didn’t know what to do. He was afraid, he wasn’t sure how to find his husband. And he needed that. He looked at Soren, feeling him take both his hands in his own. He heard his words and nodded. “Right. We’ll find him. We can talk to Laura or Holly if we can’t find him there.” Josh said, before he turned, dropping Soren’s hand and all but rushed out of the lab. His desperation to find his husband was making him move faster, quicker. He was determined to find him now. Kai looked at the scientists and sighed, before he moved after his father.

Luke grinned as he looked at Ravi. “Oh you will be don’t worry about that sunshine.” He said as he pushed open the door to the range. “I’m the best shot. I got trained by Josh and Soren too. I mean, after I begged for it but yeah. I’m a great shot.” He said with a big smile on his face as he looked at Ravi.

Soren ran out after Josh since one of his hands was still attached. Theo followed after Kai with a heavy sigh first and then with a smile he didn’t really feel. Because this was fine. “Someone always knows where he is,” Soren reminded Josh. “We just have to find that someone first.” And the cafeteria was a good place to start. Cafeteria and maybe the kitchens. No one knew quite yet. The cafeteria was not super busy yet, though it was about time for the first wave of meals to start.

Ravi nodded his head and attempted something like a bow as he moved inside, though it was hard with the bin of weapons. “Thank you. I now have high standards for you. I’ve seen those men in here.” He moved to the open spot and placed the bin on the ground. He picked up his own earmuffs and put them around his neck like a scarf. “I’m ready. Are you?”

Josh was moving quickly, forgetting that he still had one of Soren’s hands. He heard the reminder and made a short grunt of acknowledgment. He was a man on a mission and that was to find his husband. He almost felt like he used to, back when he first went to the hospital. And he wanted his husband like he’d wanted him back then, but unlike back then, he wasn’t refusing and hiding his emotions. He was so close to the cafeteria. Kai sighed, looking at Theo and shook his head as they followed Josh.

Luke snagged a pair of earmuffs and looked at Ravi, grinning. “I only aim to please.” He said with a wink as he saw him set the bin on the ground. Luke walked over and grabbed the first pistol. “I’m ready.” He said, nodding his head. He turned to one of the spots and hit the button to send the paper target to the back. “Here we go.” He said, grabbing a clip and loaded it skillfully. He then raised it and fired, once the clip was empty, the gun working perfectly, he hit the button again. Curious as to how he did.

Theo thought about running ahead and then chose not to the longer that he watched Josh. Josh clearly needed to be the one who led this. It was kind of sweet the way he worried about his husband. It was also scary. Both of Kai’s parents were scary. Neither of Theo’s was like that at all. When they entered the cafeteria, it looked like it did just before time for food. There were a couple of people getting ready to get in line and there were some others milling at the tables. It was pretty average.

Ravi laughed at the pun, whether intentional or not, as he placed the earmuffs on correctly and watched. At first, he was watching the pistol. He wanted to make sure that nothing was going wrong. It seemed to be working just fine. He turned his attention to the way Luke held it. That was technique, and he appreciated it. By the time the clip was empty, Ravi was nodding his head. “Nice job, Rainbows. Excellent form. I don’t have to worry about getting ones jammed because of that from you.”

The moment Josh entered the cafeteria, he looked around and bit his lip. Not here. He didn’t see Hayden anywhere. No. Where was he? Josh spun in a circle, searching the area. Without saying a word, Josh all but ran to the kitchen. He stepped inside and looked around. Holly was finishing the last round of meals when she looked up. “Hey Josh. What’s up?” She asked her brother in law. “Have you seen Hayden?” He asked, his voice tight as he looked around.

As the target came up, Luke looked over at Ravi, hearing him. “Thanks. And look. All head or heart shots.” He said with a triumphant smile on his face. He might’ve been into science but he also knew how to shoot. “I’ll do my best to keep my guns from jamming because of myself.” He said as he walked over to grab the next one. A reset of the target and loaded again, he got ready once more and started firing.

“Josh,” Soren warned. “Take a deep breath before you-“ But they were already moving quickly through the cafeteria and racing to the back. Soren could only hope that someone had information for him. At least there was Holly, and that was always a good sign. The kitchen staff was not too many at one time. Normally you had a couple of people at the front to hand out food and a handful in the back to make food if they needed extra. Holly was naturally their favorite of the cooks. As Josh spoke, Soren peered around the back. Where was the rest of everyone? He let go of Josh and walked through without saying anything. From somewhere further back, he could hear talking. Laughing. “Josh.” Several people laughing. Past the kitchen and into the break area were four people. Three of the kitchen folks, one of them being Laura, and Hayden sitting at the table. He was telling some story, which was evident by how engrossed his audience clearly was.

Ravi inspected the paper. “That is impressive. I do not want to be caught on the wrong side of you and these babies.” He leaned against the little walls and watched for the second. Again, he started by watching the gun and ended up watching Luke. “Shoots like a dream.” There was no real thought behind this. The words tumbled out of his mouth without permission.

Josh had barely heard the warning as he took off. Holly was about to tell Josh that Hayden was out back when Josh heard Soren. Then he heard the laughter. He moved through quickly and froze, seeing Hayden sitting beside Laura, telling a story. The relief was audible as his heart started to calm down. His breathing regulated and the biggest smile broke onto his face. He didn’t want to interrupt the story, but he didn’t want to stay away either. So he made his way over, that face full of love as he walked towards his husband.

Luke had chuckled when he heard that, though he was smiling wide and was enjoying showing off his skills. When he was done, he heed the words barely through the earmuffs. He brought the target forward again, once more showing head and heart shots. “Well, it’s your magic that made these shoot so well sunshine.”

Theo slowed as they made it to the kitchens. “Sorry, Holly. We’ve had… a rough day. I think they were worried that he…” How was Theo supposed to finish that statement? What could he possibly say that didn’t sound pretty terrible? Soren stayed in the doorway, leaning against the frame as he watched the change in Josh. Good. Hayden kept rattling on about a time in high school. Unsurprisingly, the main characters were himself and Josh. As the eyes moved to Josh upon his arrival, so did Hayden’s. A smile to match Josh’s own spread from cheek to cheek. His hands moved out to capture any part of him. “Joshua.” “No, no,” Laura interrupted. “He doesn’t get to distract you from this. You have to finish the story. What did you guys do about that?” Hayden’s eyes were only for Josh. “That will have to be for next time, I think.” The trio of people at the table all groaned.

Very impressive. Luke was clearly highly skilled. Ravi thought that only made sense with who taught him. The whole clan was impressively great at what they did. If ever they turned against everyone, they would be a scary force. It wasn’t until Luke tried to compliment his skills with the guns that he realized he hadn’t been talking about them at all. Embarrassed by this slip up that only he knew, his face reddened, and he looked away. “Don’t get ahead of yourself. We’ve got more to try. There’s still time to face explosions.” He could joke away the nerves.

Kai was with Theo as Holly smiled, shaking her head. "No worries boys." She replied as Kai heard the laughter. "Theo, up here." He said, smiling at Holly. Josh looked at Hayden, that smile never changing as he saw the one on Hayden's face as they locked eyes. He saw those hands move out, and Josh was moving quickly, his hands capturing his husband's. "Hayden." He whispered, as he barely heard Laura's words. Josh wasn't known for losing his cool like he had, and he had no way to bring up that all he wanted was to have Hayden, and Kai. They were a trio, and he knew that Kai needed his dad just as Josh did.

Luke looked at Ravi, seeing that red face and tilted his head slightly. "Who me? I'd never get ahead of myself." He said with a chuckle as he turned to head over and grabbed the shotgun. This time he reset the target for the shorter range weapon. "Here goes the next one." He said with a chuckle as he stepped up once more and started shooting this one.

There was nothing in the world that could capture his heart so completely as Josh and Kai. Still from his sitting position, he pulled Josh closer, resting his head against him. “You aren’t usually like this.” Coming to find him, yes. Looking at him like they were young and in the newly in love phase while also whispering his name, no. He was, of course, not against it. Theo pushed around Soren and pulled Kai into the little room too. It was getting pretty crowded now. Hayden turned his attention to the door and laughed. “Everyone came then?” He pulled one hand from Josh and held it out for his son. “Sorry, friends. We appear to be having a family reunion.”

Focus on the shotgun. Focus on the shotgun. He did, and he was fine with it, because he liked mechanical things. They made sense to Ravi. They worked or they didn’t, and there was always a reason for it. That was why he was so good at repairing things. What he didn’t get were people. Like Luke right now. He didn’t get it. Luke was weird in that he felt like a normal person, only he wasn’t doing what normal people do. He stayed around. That was weird. “Another round of perfection? Are we testing my fixes or watching your mastery?”

Josh felt himself pulled closer and he moved instantly, feeling the head rest against him. "It was a very.. hard patrol." Josh whispered, lowering his head to nestle against the top of Hayden's. Kai looked into the little room and saw Hayden and Josh moved his head away just a few inches. Kaiden moved past Theo and took the outstretched hand from his father. Kai bit his lip as he squeezed the hand he held gently. Breathe. Both Josh and Kai had to remind themselves to breathe.

Luke finished that round and looked over at Ravi with a bright grin, his gaze looking at him. "Well. Can it be both?" He asked as he set the shotgun down and went for the first rifle. "Because, let's be honest here. Without your fixes, I couldn't show off my mastery at shooting." He said, as he reset the target once more.

Something was wrong. Or maybe it was wrong earlier and now was righted. Both Josh and Kai looked like they had a very hard day, and Hayden was not okay with that. He peered around them to see both Theo and Soren, both also looking wary. Laura rounded up her crew and pushed them out of the little room. “We have things to do anyway, so we will get out of your hair. Thanks for all that, Hayden. We needed a good break.” She and the rest left, leaving the family behind. Hayden brought the hands of his favorite people to his chest. “What happened? Is everyone okay?” He was always the first to assume worse than the worst. He willed himself to wait for an explanation before he allowed the gaping hole in his stomach to consume him.

“Could be,” Ravi conceded. “Could be a lot of things. Could be neither. But the odds of that are incredibly low.” He would know. He thought about things like that a lot. “Alright, so you’re an excellent shot, and I’m an excellent mechanic.” He watched as both machine and human did better than excellent. Was that possible? Sure. It just seemed strange.

Josh looked at Hayden, seeing him peer around them and he knew he was looking at Soren and Theo. He was going to suggest they head back home to the room, but then Laura and the others left a moment later. He looked at Hayden, feeling his hand brought to his chest. "Well, you know how we went to the hospital for patrol?" Josh asked as he grabbed a chair to sit down beside Hayden, with Kai taking the other side. "We went to the basement, to check on the barricade we made all those years ago."

Luke looked at him as he heard that and smiled. "That's it exactly. I'm the excellent shot, and I have an excellent mechanic to keep this guns working safely for everyone." He said as he grabbed the next one. Each gun worked excellently, doing what it had to do appropriately and safely. "Well, all the guns are working perfect. I think that is a sign of a good days work. What do you think?"

The hospital. Yes. Hayden remembered where they were going. It was one of the reasons he allowed himself to be distracted for the day. He needed something to keep him from thinking about that too much. He spent too many sleepless nights thinking about that place, and he never went. His limbs grew heavy, and his nerves froze. His blood forgot how to flow. Everything stopped. He looked from Josh to Kai. He did not release their hands. “Well, that certainly is something for your first day back out there.” Every fear he ever had about Josh and Kai when they were on patrol came flooding back. He blinked them away. He could not let himself fall into that again. Soren and Theo came closer, standing behind Hayden and to the side so that he could see them if he needed. Soren stood on Josh’s side and Theo on Kai’s. Soren placed a hand on both Josh’s and Hayden’s shoulders.

With every firearm, Ravi was a little more amazed at the man he was watching. He almost forgot to observe the last gun, because he was so entranced with the way that Luke handled it. As the last shot rang out, he let it sit in the air a moment before he took the earmuffs off and put his hand out for the gun. “I guess so. We did pretty good I think. Solved a horrendous mistake, cleaned it up without anyone knowing by coercing someone else into doing that, fixed a bunch of guns, and tested them all. That went surprisingly smoothly today.”

Josh squeezed the hand that held his, and he looked at Hayden with all the emotion he was feeling. Fear, uncertainty and nervousness. "Well, when we went down there, just me and Soren at first, the seal to the lower levels was gone as was the basement. I.. tripped over a body and went down, and if the two boys hadn't come down to check on us.. I don't know what would've happened. Kai did very well. He and Theo did save us and sealed that door permanently." Josh said, sending a grateful smile to Kai. Kaiden swallowed hard. "It was.. not easy as my first patrol back." He admitted.

Luke looked at Ravi and smiled, handing him the gun. He pulled the earmuffs off and nodded his head. "Pretty successful day. Made a new friend too." He said with a grin before he bit his lip. "Hey, um. I was wondering. Would you like to join me for dinner?" He asked softly, watching Ravi. The only ones who really ate with him was his uncles and cousins.

From the very first day of this outbreak, Hayden had a fear that he could not push away. A fear that one of these days, Josh was going to leave to be the hero and not come home. The seal was gone. The apartment door lay broken on the floor as it came running in. He held his breath. His love. His heart. His husband. And his son. A hero like his father. “Come here.” He beckoned them both, drawing hands as close as possible before pulling away so that he could hold them both in a hug. He needed them both with him. Not having them was too much to bear.

Ravi placed the gun in the bin and picked it up. Yeah, he did make a new friend today. That was pretty cool. He could count it as an achievement maybe. As he began to move out of the way so that they could take these back to the armory, he wavered with the question. Another highly unexpected turn of events. Join him for dinner? Was that a thing that friends did? He mostly ate wherever was convenient. Sometimes wherever his work buddies were. Usually back in his room. Often at his work. Luke wanted to eat with him? “Um, okay. Sure.” He agreed to another social thing? What was he even doing?

Josh knew that he could talk about this stuff now. He felt he could share these problems with his husband and not lose him. And that was what made this so much more impactful when he could allow his emotions to flow. Josh and Kai looked at each other before they both shifted so that they could hug Hayden. One on either side. Kai’s arms reached around and his hands touched Josh while Josh’s hands touched Kai. A three person hug that they all needed. “I love you my love.” Josh whispered, his hug tightening slightly. Kain just tucked his head into Hayden’s side and let out a shaky sigh.

Luke watched as Ravi put the gun in the bin and he moved to open the doors as he waited. A smile grew on his face as he heard the answer. “Cool! We usually eat soon so maybe we should drop these off and if you’d like, we can clean you up a little bit before we head? You don’t have to. I don’t mind the.. mess.” He admitted, his face light red.

If he could easily stand, he would have. The hug would have been more effective that way, but they were long past this days where he could do that at will. He brought one hand up to Josh’s cheek and the other wrapped around Kai until it laced through his hair. He rubbed them both as he told himself that they were both okay. They were there. They were with him now. He kissed Josh’s other cheek. “I love you.” Then pulled Kai tighter, looking down at his tucked head. “And I love you.” He looked ahead and closed his eyes. “I have amazing heroes who I can trust to look out for one another. Heroes who braved the scariest place in the world and not only survived but saved everyone else. As hard as that was.” The hand that held onto Josh lifted, though his arm was still firmly against him. He gestured to the rest to join them. “Four heroes. Come on. Do not shy away from the rare group hug with so many of us.” Theo did not shy away and threw his arms around Kai and Hayden. Soren was a lot more hesitant. Today had been a long and hard day. He would do this for them and for himself. “I will never stop being afraid for you.” It was important to acknowledge the truth. “But I will also always know that you are capable. You are smart and strong. You are mine after all. I settle for nothing less than the best.”

There were a lot of reasons to like having a friend around and one of them was to have someone who could open the doors. It made moving around so much easier when he had so much with him. And then Luke dropped another thing that confused him. Would he ever stop being surprised by this man? “Of course not. This mess is practically nothing compared to the other one.” He walked back to the armory with this unexpected buddy. “Will your… people mind though?”

Josh felt the hand to his cheek and Kai felt the hand lace through his hair. Both men enjoyed the comfort from being with the other who loved them as a husband and a son. A family. Kai and Josh both heard Hayden tell them he loved them. The hand on Josh’s cheek was gone after a moment, though the arm was still firmly against him. A moment later, Kai felt arms around him and Josh felt Soren hug him and Hayden. Those words settled in Josh’s core and he smiled softly. Enjoying the moment. A few moments passed before a voice echoed around them. “Am I invited to this big family hug?” Jacob was leaning against the doorframe. He had seen how Soren was, he knew his husband well enough to know something had unsettled him. Being one of the head medics had its perks, like passing his shift off to take care of the most important patient he’d ever have.

Luke chuckled as he heard him, while he opened the doors for him. “Nah. They won’t mind the mess. We’ve all been a mess at least a couple times in our lives.” Luke said as he opened the door to the armory for Ravi. He was so excited to have a new friend, especially one as amazing as Ravi.

They were almost complete. Almost the whole family. They were missing some still. It was nice even with that. Hayden sighed as he felt every one of them around him. They held him on the ground. They refused to let him go. He breathed. His eyes suddenly began searching, head trying to turn in the correct direction, but he was block. “Jacob.” Soren pulled away enough to see him, and his heart lightened. He had not expected his husband to be able to get away. Now that he was there, Soren could not see how he could have ever made it without him. As Soren reached out for him, Hayden answered. “Yes, please.” Theo somehow ensconced himself into the hug. “More family! It’s been a hard day of almost dying and saving the world, so yes, join us.” Soren did not say anything. Instead, the exhaustion of the moment fell across his face. He felt like his cheeks were sagging. His eyes held the heaviness that came with reliving his nightmare as they silently pleaded for Jacob to be with him.

Ravi moved into the armory and thought this was probably a weird thing to say. Or maybe it was normal. Maybe it was weird to compare it to the mess that Ravi was always. Luke was such a weird normal person. He shoved the bin behind Rodney and said, “those are done. I’ll check on the last one tomorrow.” Rodney nodded to him. “You’re so quick, Rav. See you later. Hey.” He waved to Luke. “Thanks for helping out today.”

Jacob looked at Soren, even as he heard his name. He saw those heavy eyes, that exhaustion across his face, and he knew exactly what he had to do. Josh and Kai looked up to see Jacob coming over, moving to stand behind Hayden and beside Soren. One arm wrapping around Theo and Hayden, and the other pulling Soren close to him. "I'm here." He whispered to his husband as he joined this beautiful and heartwarming family hug. He knew that this was where he needed to be. He would be just as close to his husband later, but Jacob was doing what he could now. He'd listen to and be there for him after dinner. Just them in their room, together.

Luke followed him and he looked at Rodney and waved back. "Of course! I enjoyed it." He said with a smile before he looked at Ravi. "Ready to go?" He asked the man curiously as he turned to head out of the armory. He was enjoying this time with Ravi, and this was the best day off he'd had in months. And honestly, the most exciting too. He did wonder though as he stood there, how his cousins' first patrol went now that they were ungrounded.

Soren should have been there for Josh and Hayden. He should have stayed strong with his arms around them like he started. They needed people to reassure them. He should have. Instead, as soon as Jacob came, Soren retreated. Or possibly it was more accurate to say that he crumpled. Before Jacob could even get to him, he was shrinking into a significantly smaller version of himself, waiting in anticipation for the moment that his hero could save him. When Jacob pulled him close, he buried his face into whatever he could get to with this family hug. He kept his arms close to his body as his hands clung to Jacob. He closed his eyes and told himself over and over that it was okay. The rest in this hug were happy to be in it too. Even if Hayden had not been there for this to happen, he could feel its weight. This patrol was one that hurt a lot of them all at once. Hayden could not believe how incredibly lucky they were to have this amazing of a family. Potentially this saved some from having a worse time later, but for some, they still had a rough night ahead. Theo finally spoke. “Should we like get out of their break room and get some food or something? I’m starving. Plus if Luke gets here and we’re all missing, that will be weird for him.”

Ravi was ready for simultaneously many and very little things all the time. He was ready for work as long as it was his work. He was ready for challenges as long as they were his challenges. He was even ready for hard situations as long as they fell into the realm of his world. Today was full of so many things that did not fit into that category, and a part of him wanted to say ‘no, I’m not ready, wait, help!’ Part of him wanted to find a way to back out. Oh he just remembered these things he had to do, but then that was both rude and a lie. And even if it was true, Luke was likely to just go with him, which honestly he didn’t hate but still. He did like being around Luke. For a normal guy, he sure wasn’t normal, and Ravi appreciated that. “I’m ready.” He opened the door and stepped out into the hall, ready to see whatever it was that awaited him in this dinner adventure.

Jacob knew something was wrong with his husband. He knew it instinctively, but when Soren buried his face into him and his hands clung, Jacob knew it was so much worse. Something had happened during patrol, something had terrified his love. “It’s okay. I’m here.” Jacob whispered, kissing the top of Soren’s head gently. Josh clung to Hayden, holding him close. Kai heard Theo and let out small chuckle. “He isn’t wrong. I’m starving and we can’t leave Luke alone.” Kai whispered as Josh let out a soft laugh, nodding slightly. “Alright family. What say we call this a day and go get some food?”

Luke had never thought he’d find someone so interesting but yet, he did. And it was by chance that he even met Ravi. He was originally going to grab a gun and walk outside. Then he ran into Hayden. And then into Ravi. He nodded, grinning wide as he followed him stepping out into the hall. “I know you’ve heard of my family, but they can be a little.. odd. But I love them anyway.” He said with a nod as he headed down the hall.

Soren understood why they had to stop and go to dinner, and he agreed with this, but he did not want to have to extricate himself from Jacob specifically. The hospital scared every part of him and had for twenty years. He had not been aware of how much it affected him until now. Before this, he thought it was hard. It was rough. Clearly he was wrong. Theo was the first to pull away from the hug. He stood a few feet away, ready to go because that was how he coped with everything. He was always ready to go. Hayden pulled his arm away from Kai and placed his hands on Josh’s cheeks. “Its okay. You are okay.” He kissed him with enough of a fierceness to pull his attention to it but also with a softness in the hopes of bringing him some peace. Then he moved to Kai who he embraced entirely. “You are the bravest, smartest hero. I am so proud of you.”

Like he did, Ravi shoved his hands into his pockets as they walked through the hall and towards the cafeteria. His shoulders were a little tense since they were going into yet another unknown situation. He really should stop agreeing to do this. It was pushing the dial really far on his social meter. Though, when he thought about that, he was kind of sad. He didn’t want to have to say no to Luke. He liked having him around a lot. He didn’t take so much energy like other people. He almost felt like he was a source of energy. That in itself was fascinating. He never met anyone else like that. “odd? Aren’t they the pinnacle of perfection?” Everyone knew about Jacob and Soren. If you had a relationship, you wanted it to be that one. And honestly, everyone knew about Hayden and Josh too. Well, they didn’t know the inner workings for the most part. They looked perfect before and they continue to be perfect after. “I’m the guy who exploded himself. How can they be odder than that?”

Jacob shifted as everyone else did but he stayed glued to Soren. Holding him close as he stepped back from the hug. Kai felt the arm pull away as he saw Hayden put both hands on Josh’s cheeks. Josh blinked as a tear slipped out. “Okay.” He whispered before he felt the pretty fierce yet soft kiss which he gave back to. When the kiss broke, he let out a soft sigh. Kai looked at his dad, as he embraced him back. “Thank you dad.” He said softly before he too pulled away. Jacob shifted so he could coax Soren’s face from where he’d buried it. “It’s okay love. I’m here. You’re okay.” He said softly, kissing him gentle and lovingly. He pulled away after a moment. “Let’s go eat with our family and then we can go to our room.”

Luke looked at Ravi and chuckled softly. “They are, but they’re odd too. Well. You’ll see.” He said with a small smile. “Come on!” He said happily, walking a little faster towards the cafeteria. He wanted to grab his hand in his excitement but those hands were stuck in his pockets so Luke really couldn’t. He was bouncing on his heels as he walked, excited for his friend to meet his family. He didn’t even think about how that could be weird maybe, inviting this guy you just met and spent all of a day with to have dinner with you and your family. He was just happy having a new friend.
