Kaiden reaching for his pistol did not even make Ezekiel flinch. That was what wolves were supposed to do. He had no reason to be alarmed by this kind of behavior. In fact, it helped him remember what they were doing. They were not friends. They were merely surviving alongside each other. “I am starting to understand why,” he snapped back as he stood his ground unwavering. If She willed it, then he would die. He did not, however, believe it was so. “Have you considered that there is a reason my people kill yours? Perhaps it has something to do with your lack of appreciation for the land that provides for you. You desecrate it.” He looked back the way they came to gesture towards the stairs that fell before stepping closer. He was only inches from Kaiden. This was a bold move for him, and he was not sure what was coming over him. Theo was right there with them, hands out towards them. “Come on, now. I thought we were being friends-“ “You are a petulant child who would find clarity in murder, wouldn’t you?” Ezekiel paid zero mind to the second wolf. His entire attention was with this one. “I do not know why I thought saving you was a good idea.”

Kaiden glared at Ezekiel more when he heard that. His hands clenched into fists as he clenched his jaw tight. Kai looked back at the stairs and then to Ezekiel. “We do appreciate the land. We have our own land that feeds us. The stairs were an accident, left uncared for since the world changed.” Kaiden argued as he felt his temper rising. When Ezekiel stepped close to him, Kai closed the distance, chests touching as he looked at this man. His eyes narrowed as he growled low. “I do not find clarity in murder. I find it in exploring. And I don’t know why I saved you. So why don’t you finish the job and kill me now.” Kaiden bit out. “Guys..” Alex whispered, placing a hand on Ezekiel’s shoulder. He would stand and defend his fellow Seraphite, but he didn’t understand what was happening.

Ezekiel merely raised a hand towards Alex as his nostrils flared and he glared at this boy in front of him. “How very wolf of you to treat us as though we are a threat to your pack. Your territory.” The heat of their fuming breaths swirled together in one rage-fueled mass. “But you spend so little time in your own territory that you let it fall to pieces around you.” Without moving from his spot, he jabbed a finger back towards those fallen stairs. “This is why they say that you cannot be trusted with the land. This is why we want it back.” He brought his hand back to fall beside him. “I am shocked that there are still people like you in this world.” He leaned back just enough to quickly slip his hands between their chests and shove Kaiden backwards. “Such a disgrace to humanity.” He was already stepping back and turning so that his side was to Kaiden when Theo was stepping between them with a frantic, “Whoa whoa whoa, this is not what we agreed on guys! Remember when we were being non-aggressive buddies?”

Kaiden’s eyes narrowed more, glaring at the other. He had no idea how they lived or what they were like. Typical of a wolf, Kaiden growled again, seeing the jabbed finger. He was about to make a retort when he felt himself stumble backwards. “How dare you?! You have no idea what you’re talking about. We don’t choose where to patrol, we just do what we’re told. Like you do what you’re told by your leaders.” Kaiden snapped. This scar knew nothing of their world. Their lives. “Then again, you scars are all insane, praying to a prophet who was so easy to kill. She rules everything you say and do. So why would I even consider thinking you’d understand.” Kaiden snapped, as he looked at Theo. “I guess that’s over.” He said simply.

Alex watched the entire thing unfold, he saw Ezekiel raise a hand towards him and he’d backed off. This was a side he’d never seen of the warrior before. But he was with Theo, they were supposed to not be aggressive to each other. He just didn’t know what happened.

“So easy to kill?” Ezekiel was going to let it go. Or at least he was going to drop it. He was going to call this a battle that he did not want to fight and walk away. Actually, he was going to tell Alex that this had been a fool’s plan, and they would do better on their own than assisting such lowly creatures. That dropped the moment Kaiden decided that talking like a stereotypical, trigger-happy wolf was the way to go. He whipped back around, taking long strides towards him. He pushed Theo aside who was facing Kai instead of Ezekiel. Theo stumbled and caught himself before falling. “She was human as are we all,” he growled with as much bite as his aggressor. His entire body was beginning to shake with the uncontrollable anger. He fumed so heavily that his breath was easily audible. He glared into those violent eyes. “Are you?”

Kaiden knew what he said, he’d done it on purpose. He narrowed his eyes as he saw Ezekiel make long strides and his eyes flashed at the pushing of Theo. Oh okay. Good to know that would work. He saw the others body shaking and could hear his breathing. Kaiden’s brown eyes sparked with anger and hate. “No. At least. Not according to your people. But you are too busy looking at what we aren’t doing in taking care of our land, to notice we’re human too.” Kaiden snapped, bringing his hands up and placing them in Ezekiel’s chest and pushed hard. “Next time you push my friend? You’ll have broken legs.” Kaiden added, moving quickly to Theo’s side. “Are you okay?” He asked, all hostility vanished as he checked on his brother.

Ezekiel stumbled backwards, losing his footing, and crashing down onto the ground pretty hard. Thankfully, so much of this area was overrun with grass which cushioned his fault. He fell hard enough to wind him which rendered him both unable to speak and also made him take longer to be able to get up. It did wonders for anger as he attempted to regain his breath. He was less furious though still unreasonably uncomfortable. Theo nodded, but he was too much in shock to know what else to do. “Yeah, I, uh, I’m fine. I- I just-“ He looked from the scar on the floor to the scar who seemed equally as confused as Theo felt. “I’m good. Are you?” He finally brought his attention back to Kai. Kai was a bit overzealous sometimes. He liked to wander and explore sometimes. But this? This was.. well, this was a lot.

Alex’s eyes widened as he saw Ezekiel fall to the ground. He was over by his side quickly, checking him over. “A- Are you okay?” Alex asked, concern for his leader in his voice and eyes. Kaiden had glanced over and winced, he had not intended for the other to fall. His focus went back onto Theo a moment later. “I’m fine. Let’s get moving. It’s getting later the longer we stand here. We need to get further away before we can separate.” Kaiden said, looking at the three of them and started walking. He didn’t even wait for the man on the ground, he just started moving again like nothing happened.

“Are you sure?” Theo asked, because from where he was standing, he was pretty sure that Kai was not fine. In fact, he was absolutely positive that this was the opposite of fine. He ran after him, not wanting to be so close to the people who literally just attacked his brother. Ezekiel focused on his breathing. Deep and slow breath in. Slow, slow, slow breath out. He watched as the other two walked away. “I- am fine,” he answered, hoping that Alex did not hear the slight falter in his voice. “Shaken is all.” He watched the man who haunted his dreams as well as his waking thoughts who now occupied an even bigger space in them. He clenched a fist and shoved it into the ground to stabilize himself as he stood up. “As much as I would like to separate now, I think he is correct. It would be unwise to attempt to fend for ourselves now.” In a lower voice just for Alex, he hissed, “Though I prefer time with the demons.” He moved forward, losing all of his swiftness. He felt no need to be nearer to Kaiden than was required.

“I said I’m fine!” Kaiden snapped, looking back at Theo. Which in turn caused him to look at the one who had kept him awake last night and now seemed to occupy his thoughts now. With a humph, he turned back around and kept moving. There were some buildings up ahead, and the street they were on, connected to another one that ran side to side. It was at that junction they could separate. Alex made sure that Ezekiel was okay, though he caught the slight falter. Something was wrong still. He snorted a laugh at the hissed words and nodded. Although he didn’t mind the two wolves, they were much nicer than he’d thought, even if Kaiden did fight with Ezekiel. He looked up ahead and sighed. “Not much longer, though it’s gotten later, I do hope our group is okay still.” Alex commented as they walked.

Theo’s movements paused, just a moment, and enough for him to fall behind. Kaiden’s anger hurt Theo more than he expected. Clearly not, he thought as he watched his best friend and brother struggle to keep up with who he had been his whole life. How had one guy managed to ruin everything? He was a scar, or a Sera whatever, but they had dealt with plenty of scars before. None of them ever made Kai act like that. Granted, they never had discussions with them. Maybe this would be normal if they tried to talk more. Ezekiel wanted to stay in his anger. It was not so much that he liked being angry but that he felt that he had earned it. However, Alex brought up a good point, and he realized that he had been completely neglecting his friend. He wrapped an arm around Alex’s back and hooked his hand around his shoulder. “They are strong. She guides us all.” He looked ahead to see the roads. “When we find a building we think will be easy to traverse, we should travel once again to the roof. Now that we are not in immediate danger, we may be able to see where we need to go to get back.” Had he not been so upset with Kaiden, he might have suggested that they do the same thing.

Kaiden’s anger was usually kept well under control. He always tried so hard not to use it. Tried not to use it on his family and friends. But he was just so worked up and confused. It was like his whole world was shattered around him. Was everything they know about these scars.. no seraphites wrong? Kaiden refused to think about it right now. He noticed that Theo had fallen behind and he wondered if his anger had caused that. As they came closer to the crossroads, he paused so that he was back in step with Theo. “I’m sorry for snapping at you. I shouldn’t have let my anger out.” Kai said, looking at the ground as he walked. Alex felt the arm wrapped around his back and he nodded. “I know She guides us all. And okay. That sounds like a good idea.” Alex said as he noticed the crossroad was coming up closer.

Theo didn’t really want to look at Kai. He didn’t want to be there anymore. He was done exploring and doing something stupid. Really, he just wanted to go home. Home meant trying to go to sleep with the lectures of Brian, so maybe he could crash with his parents for the night. Or maybe he could find himself a cozy section of the library to hang out until he felt better. He wasn’t mad at Kaiden. He wasn’t super upset or anything. He didn’t know what he was honestly. Scared maybe. He was scared. “It’s fine,” he muttered as he continued walking without looking at him. He didn’t even look back at the people he didn’t trust. He just looked forward. Ezekiel let his arm drop, because he was not the right person to comfort Alex. He was, after all, one of the two who could not keep their cool in this situation. That was entirely unfair to Alex. He held his breath and his words. His words made them as bad as the wolves claimed that they were. He felt a weight get heavier as they came to the crossroad.

As they reached the crossroads, he looked at Theo. He’d heard his words and noticed he just looked forward. Kaiden stopped them and turned to look at the two men. “We part ways here. Uh. Thanks I guess for not killing us.” Kaiden said as he turned to head down the road to the right. He had no idea where they were and the sun was getting lower in the sky. They weren’t going to make it home for dinner tonight. He wondered about his parents, how worried they’d be when he didn’t show up. Alex felt the arm drop from his back and he looked at Ezekiel as they came to the crossroads. “Yeah. Uh. Bye. I guess.” Alex said, looking from the wolves to his leader before he too turned and headed towards the left, back hopefully towards their group. This whole day had been so confusing to him. He paused and waited for Ezekiel.

Theo looked back at the people they were parting ways with. People they weren’t supposed to ever see again, right? Kaiden probably thought that the day before, so who knew if that was true or not. He turned and started waking to the left, unable to speak in this moment. He had too many thoughts and emotions without enough direction to act on any of them.

Ezekiel stood in the middle of the crossroads alone. Out of the corner of his eye, he watched as Alex moved to the left. The rest of his attention was on the person who made him angrier than anyone else had ever done before. After two chance encounters, he was left with only a sour feeling in his stomach, though from where it came he did not know. He watched a good while, too long, then followed Alex to the left, quickly picking up speed and scanning the buildings for which one they could easily climb to the roof.

Kaiden walked down the street, looking for anything familiar. Nothing looked familiar and the light was getting low. “Theo.. I think we’re going to need to find somewhere to camp tonight. It’s getting hard to see where we are and I don’t think I can get us home before dark. What do you think?” Kai asked, moving so he was beside his friend again. He refused to look back at the one who haunted his dreams, who made him lose control of his anger. “I just.. I don’t know where we are..”

Alex waited for Ezekiel, and then did the same. He found a building that looked like it had a way to the roof. “That building?” Alex asked, pointing it out with a hand. “Looks like there’s a way to the roof, but I can’t see inside to know for sure.” Alex added, watching his leader and friend carefully.

Theo’s arms were crossed as he walked. He held himself a little more inward than usual, and he watched the ground several feet ahead of them. When Kaiden said his name, he looked up but almost immediately looked down again as he listened to Kai’s words. “Uh, yeah. Yeah, I don’t know where we are either.” He looked at all of these buildings, and none of them even so much as was a landmark that could tell him where they might be close to. “I guess I shouldn’t have said this is what we should have done today.”

Ezekiel nodded once and began moving to the building Alex’s pointed to. “It will have to work. We need to be able to get to the roof before nightfall. We do not have much time if we want to do this.” He moved towards the front door and opened it. With a quick check, he assessed that it was clear.

Kai looked at Theo, listening to him. “No. It’s just as much my own fault. So don’t put it all on yourself.” Kai said quietly. He looked around and saw an old hotel, the name falling apart on its front. “Let’s go in there and pick a spot for the night.” Kai suggested. He also should not have let his anger loose. “Are you mad at me?” Kai asked softly, having taken note of his brothers posture. He moved towards the hotel, his stomach grumbling as it was normally dinner time. “Man. I’m going to be grounded when we get back tomorrow.” Kai muttered.

Josh was headed in from the field, he liked to help harvest and tend to the animals when it was his day off. He was alone, Soren never did show up. He made it to the cafeteria and was the first of the group to be there. He wondered where Kai was, usually the kid was always on time.

Jacob was relaxing on the bed, curled up in his husbands arms as his stomach grumbled loudly. A low groan echoed from him as he yawned. “We should go eat dinner..” Jacob suggested, though he was very comfortable and did not want to move.

Alex nodded and followed Ezekiel into the building. “Right, get to the top of the roof so we should find the stairs.” Alex said, venturing in and looking around, before he opened a door and found them. “Ezekiel.” He said before he started up the stairs.

Theo looked at the hotel and nodded. That was better than wondering in the dark when they were lost, tired, and hungry. Thankfully Kai picked up the can of beans. He had some snacks in his pack, but he didn’t think to bring a whole meal. He looked up, shocked at the question. “No, I’m not mad.” Which was true. He was feeling something though. “I’m just.. confused? I guess. I dunno. It’s just that.. that.. I don’t know, everything got crazy, you know? I don’t even know what just happened.” He pulled opened the door to the hotel and held it open for Kai.

Hayden was running a little late since he had so many things with which to busy himself. He first did as he promised and insisted on checks for every firearm that was not currently in use. They all seemed fine if not a little worn and possibly a little old. They told him that he was being a paranoid father again. He told them that he would rather be that than everyone find themselves in a less than pleasant situation with their inoperable weapons. After that, he headed to their science lab where he oversaw several different projects with his multiple specialists. They not only made the ammunition, as that was something that had to keep being created if they were going to keep using it, but also attempted to perfect it. They also crafted more explosives for everyone’s favorite trap mines and the like. And on top of it all, he had a team working on different medications. It was a busy day of keeping as busy as possible. At the end, they had to kick him out. He made his way to the cafeteria where he was the second of the group to arrive. He sat next to Josh. “Are you the first one? Guess Soren never showed up. Shocking.” It wasn’t. “Hmm, Where’s Kai?”

Soren’s attention pulled away from the book he haphazardly held in his hands and down to the interrupting stomach. “Mm, so you’re telling me that I shouldn’t read you another chapter then?” He shoved a hand into the book as he flopped the other to the side table to grab the bookmark and place it inside to save their place. He then tossed the book, missing the table entirely, and wrapped his arms around his husband like the book didn’t just clatter onto the ground. “But you’re right, we probably should.” He kissed the top of Jacob’s head and released him. He removed his reading glasses and actually placed them on the table. His own stomach growled at them. “Ah, yes, I guess I’m hungry too.”

“Excellent job,” Ezekiel praised as he moved to join Alex at the stairs. He peered up to see that they seemed mostly clear of anything that would block their way. He moved swiftly up the stairs, racing against time that was absolutely against them. As they moved, he felt that there were several things he needed to address, though how to do that he was not sure. “This is not likely what you expected for your first time on the mainland.”

Kai sighed a little at that before he shook his head. “You and me both. But he’s the reason I did not sleep last night.” He admitted as he looked around when they entered the hotel. It seemed quiet enough. “I just.. I don’t know.” Kai muttered as he headed inside. He went down the first hallway and the first door he find unlocked, he pushed open. Inside were two beds that looked relatively clean. The room was empty. “Theo. In here. We can block the door and stay here tonight.”

Josh looked up to see Hayden coming in. He kissed his cheek when his husband sat down. “No. He didn’t show. I guess the joy of tending livestock paled in comparison to spending time with Jacob. Big shocker.” Josh chuckled, even though it was absolutely not shocking. He looked around and shook his head. “I’m not sure. Usually he’s first on off days, even if he goes out.” Josh said, trying not to make a big thing about him not being there.

Jacob sighed, hearing that. “As much as I’d love to hear your beautiful voice read another chapter, probably should eat.” Jacob said as he heard the book clatter to the floor. He felt the arms wrap around him as he chuckled. “You and those reading glasses are adorable.” He commented after he felt the kiss to his head. Jacob reluctantly moved from the bed and threw on shorts and a shirt and put his own glasses on. He looked back at Soren and smiled, waiting for him before he headed out.

Alex smiled at the praise as he moved up the stairs. He glanced over at Ezekiel when he spoke and shook his head. “It definitely was not what I was expecting, but all wolves aren’t like those two are they?” Alex asked as they walked upstairs.

Theo moved inside, shut the door, and pulled over the chair from the small desk to hook underneath the doorknob. That was not exactly the most secure way to block the door, but it would be enough to deter people like him. If a door was locked, very few wanted to open them. It a door felt like something was up against it, fewer wanted to open that. He moved inside and sat on the edge of one of the beds. “So, if he’s the one who saved you yesterday, and he’s the reason you didn’t sleep, was he like that yesterday too?”

Hayden smiled at the kiss. “Well, I guess you can’t say the same since you left me for that very same thing.” He slid his hand into Josh’s and laced their fingers together. Ever since they finally worked everything out, which did take literally fighting against each other and losing an eye, Hayden always wanted to be as attached to his husband as possible. They weren’t quite like Jacob and Soren, but they were happy. Hayden had never been so happy. Except for the part where his son was not here yet, and that was already starting to eat at him. He tried to push it aside. “I am sure he’s on his way,” he said more for himself than anyone else. The other two weren’t even there yet, so there was no reason to worry.

“Not nearly as much as you and your actual glasses.” He slid out of the bed and pulled on his usual day off attire of random shirt and whichever pants were closest. He was just about to join Jacob when he remembered the book he threw and retrieved it from the floor and placed it on the side table before it was abandoned there forever and he slipped on it in the night. “Alright, let’s go feed that tummy of yours.” He opened the door for Jacob, and once they were out, he closed and locked it.

Ezekiel smiled a little at that. No, not everyone was like Kaiden. “No, I don’t believe so, though I confess that I do not usually attempt to work with them in such a manner.” He regained composure and continued. “Under normal circumstances, we would never have had to the chance to do so. But I.. I have broken our rules twice now. Once today and once yesterday.” Now was the time. “When I lost my entire group to all of those demons, I found Kaiden. I saved him. I did not know he was a wolf at the time. And then he saved me. And then I saved him again.” Ezekiel was staring at the walls as they turned in circles up the stairwell. Lost in the memory. “I hope that explains so of what you witnessed today.” They reached the top and he pushed open the door to the roof. The sky was much darker now though they still had some light.

Kai sat on the edge of the other bed and looked at his friend. “Well. He didn’t have a bow pointed at my face though he did yell and push, so yeah. He was like that yesterday.” Kaiden admitted as he looked at his hands, fingers twisting together in his lap. This was all so confusing and weird. Why did he have to leave the patrol yesterday? Things would be so much easier if he’d just stayed with them. Then he’d never would’ve met Ezekiel and they wouldn’t be out here now.

Josh felt the hand slide into his and he smiled. “Yeah, well. I don’t understand all that science stuff you do. So I leave that to the experts, like you my love.” He said as he remembered how much they’d gone through before they were finally happy. “Yes. He’ll be here soon and give you a big hug.” Josh added as he hoped that was what would happen. The fear that something had happened to him was there, especially after yesterday but he wasn’t going to voice his fears out loud.

Jacob heard Soren’s words and a blush crossed his face. His husband never failed to make him blush like he did. He watched Soren pick the book up after he got dressed and he headed to the door. “Why thank you. Good to know chivalry is not dead yet.” He said with a chuckle as he stepped out into the hallway. He took Soren’s hand and headed towards the cafeteria.

Alex tilted his head in confusion as they walked. He knew that they usually didn’t work with them at all. He listened with both shock and a little awe at the words. He found Kaiden yesterday. After the loss of his group. And they saved each other twice. “It does explain a lot of what happened today.” Alex said as they made their way to the roof. He couldn’t tell exactly where they had to go. He was so lost.

“He had a bow pointed to your face yesterday?! And we still worked with this crazy guy today?” Theo was baffled by this turn of events. “Okay, nope, wait, let’s back this crazy train up to the beginning.” He turned so that he was facing Kai. “You wandered off from your patrol, which includes your father and uncle, got caught up in a horde of about a billion infected, were totally gonna die, and then Mister Crankypants molotovs them and then.. points an arrow at your face? And then we’re all hunky dory trying not to die together until he’s threatening your face again? Bro! That’s wild!”

Hayden sighed. “It better be.” He needed something to do other than sit there, so he stood up. “I’m going to grab everyone’s food, okay?” He and his cane moved to the line and grabbed the five meals that they normally got.

Soren laughed as he pulled Jacob close so that he could slide his arm around his waist. “Only for you.” They made their way into the cafeteria as Hayden was bringing over their meals. It was a tetris game trays, but it was a game he often insisted that he do on his own to feel like he was still capable after all of his injuries. Hayden set the trays down in front of them and grinned. “So you two are alive then. Look, honey, you do have a brother after all.”

Ezekiel looked out at the tops of the buildings and sighed. This was not how he planned to show Alex the world. As he searched for anything familiar, he spoke again. “I did not mean to upset you if I did. This is not usually how I act. I felt a bit.. overcome I guess you could say. Very few have ever made me so angry, but to so blatantly speak of actions that caused the death of our people- I couldn’t-“ He huffed out a breath. “There. Look that way. I believe all the way back there is where we were. That will take some time and effort to get back to. I am not sure if we want to do that in the dark.”

Kai listened to the explanation from Theo and nodded. “That’s about the long and the short of it. It’s wild but we aren’t dead. Lost but not dead.” Kai said as he sighed. This was not at all how he thought today was going to go. “I don’t know why he didn’t kill me yesterday and saved me twice instead. And it’s been in my head ever since.” He admitted, grateful that he was finally able to let it all out.

Josh sighed, hoping that Kai was going to walk through those doors with Theo. He nodded as he watched Hayden move to the line with his cane. He knew why his husband did that but he still didn’t like it. His eyes moved to see his brother and Soren coming in.

Jacob smiled and chuckled at the pull and the arm around his waist. “As it should be.” He said with a laugh as they entered the cafeteria. Jacob rolled his eyes at Hayden’s words with a grin as they sat down at the table. “I guess I do have a brother.” He said before he continued. “And my own brother did manage to convince my best friend to skip out on livestock duty to hide away with him. And they dared to show their faces at dinner.” Josh commented as Jacob stuck his tongue out at Josh who laughed.

Alex looked at Ezekiel and shook his head. “You didn’t upset me. It was odd and weird to see but it’s no matter, as it’s over with and you don’t have to think about him anymore.” Alex said before he looked out over buildings and sighed. “Should we make camp and hope our group is still there in the morning?”

This was crazy. All of it was crazy. Everything about everything was just crazy. Theo threw up his hands. “I don’t blame you! This is wild. I am going to be laying here thinking about it too, and it wasn’t even me he was totally going after. Ugh wow. Okay. But like… we never have to deal with that again. Probably. Hopefully. Maybe.” He fell backwards and stared at the ceiling. “Crazy dude. Crazy.”

Soren shrugged. “What can I say? He’s highly tempting. And livestock are boring in comparison to our books.” He signed ‘thank you’ to Hayden and then looked around as he sat down. “Hey, where is Kai? Is he still out with Owen?” Hayden’s eyes narrowed as his attention snapped to the last thing that Soren said. “Um, uh no, he and Theo decided to head to the Serevena instead today. You haven’t seen him?” He scanned the cafeteria for his boy and his friend. He was so rarely late.

Ezekiel considered this. “If our group is in trouble, they could use our help now. However, getting back to them in the dark will not only be difficult but dangerous since we do not know this area. I fear we would not be much use to them dead.” He frowned and then nodded. “I think that yes, we should make camp. I wish I knew if there was already one set up for us in this area, but I do not. We can choose a room in this building with a window so that we may keep an eye out on the streets below.” He turned and moved back towards the stairs inside the building.
