Kaiden was more than a little surprised at the fact that this scar was going after the infected and not them. "Come on Theo, let's clear these out." Kai said, grabbing his rifle. He aimed at the first infected he saw, and shot it, sending it to the ground. A few more streamed out from a few buildings near the fallen stairs and Kai twisted around, aiming and firing at them. Unfortunately for them, the screams and gunshots brought that large infected out, it followed the others and came roaring into the area. "Shambler." Kaiden's voice was soft. They did not have the capability to deal with this one. "As fun as this is, we should really try and get away from here." Kai commented and Alex couldn't help but mutter an agreement with the wolf. This was not a fight they could win.

Theo backed up as the shambler came out. “Kai, we for sure gotta go.” Ezekiel did not want to agree with a wolf, even if he was the same one that plagued his thoughts. He did not want to. But he did. He agreed that it was time to go. He didn’t know what this ‘shambler’ thing was, but he was certain it was that big and bad demon that was coming towards them. He turned back the way they came, but the demons were swarming from that way. They could not get back to their group for now. Their only option was to move further into these old buildings and hope that they could find a place to go. Theo also saw this and started to panic. “Kai, for real, how are we gonna get out of this?” Ezekiel looked around quickly. “There.” He pointed to a ladder on the side of one of the buildings. “We move up.” Without hesitation, he dashed that way as he tied the hammers to his waist. The demons could climb, at least some of them, but many could not. And seraphites were used to going up. Theo looked at Kaiden. “Are we going with them?!” He didn’t see much other choice.

Kaiden looked at the shambler, looked at Theo and then at the scar and his friend. “Theo, we have no choice!” Kai yelled as he followed the scar who haunted his thoughts. He couldn’t see any other way. Kaiden let the two scars climb up first, then Alex. He fired off at a couple of the infected to give them a chance to escape. “Theo, you get up there and I’ll be right behind you.” Kai told him, holding off the runners that were making their way. Alex had no choice but to trust Ezekiel and the wolves, climbing up the ladder behind his leader. Kai waited until everyone was up and then climbed up after them, avoiding a runner that had gotten close. Once they made it to the top of the building, Kai looked down to see none of them following. But he threw a bottle away from the ladder which drew them away and to that sound. “Now what?” He asked, looking at the same scar from yesterday.

Theo didn’t like this. He didn’t like trusting these scars, because who could promise that they wouldn’t just throw them down to the infected? Or gut them when they got up that ladder? “Oh, I don’t like this. I don’t like this. I don’t like this.” He climbed up the ladder after the other two but looked down frequently to make sure that one, Kai was coming and two, they weren’t about to be devoured by scary monsters. Thankfully, all of his dreams were coming true, and they seemed to be mostly safe. He shifted uneasily as Kai threw the bottle and stuck close to him. “They’re just going to string us up and slice our stomachs open or shoot us in the head or beat us with that hammer.”

“Don’t tempt me, dog” Ezekiel grumbled as he moved across the roof of the building. They needed to find a way down, but there were so many demons all around them down there. Perhaps there was a way across to another building. These buildings were pretty far apart. Running and jumping across was not an option. Moving down into this building was not an option if the demons were roaming. “Alex, what do you see?”

Kai looked at Theo, seeing his friend sticking close to him. He heard his words then the grumbled words of the other scar. “Okay. Enough. I know this is less than ideal, but we can all survive this if we work..” Kai sighed heavily, hating this whole idea and plan. “If we work together.” Kai said as he glanced over at them. “Can we call a truce for the next however long it takes to get us all away from this and we can go our separate ways?” Kaiden asked, as he watched the two scars. Alex was still uncomfortable in trusting these wolves but he could see no choice. He looked at Ezekiel and bit his lip before his eyes widened. He moved towards one side of the building and grabbed a large plank. “Bridge?” He asked, struggling to pick the long plank up. Kaiden, seeing a chance to prove that he could be trusted long enough, he walked over and helped the younger scar. The two worked in silence and maneuvered the plank to make a bridge to the building on the other side. “See? Just until we get safe and then we can go our separate ways.” Kaiden said, stepping back towards Theo. He didn’t like this one bit, but the strategic side of his brain was running instead of the side that was screaming at him to run away before they do string them up, shoot them or feed them to the infected.

This felt like a recipe for disaster, and they just ran around tempting fate with their freaking bridge stunt. Theo watched as Kaiden worked with the younger scar to move the plank over to create a bridge. This was their worst idea. “Your papa is going to kill us. Your dad is never going to let you go. My mom and dad are going to try to like ground me like I was a little kid again. And Soren.. no actually he would probably be cool with this. He’s actually a pretty cool dude. But everyone else!” Kai looked at the older scar specifically who was looking at Kai like he didn’t know if he wanted to just order the younger one to shoot him right there or take his time so that he could savor the death. Or something equally not great. Ezekiel, had he known that was what the wolf was thinking, would have groaned, because that was not at all what he was thinking. He was thinking that yet again he was put into a position where he was meant to choose what to do with this particular man. Positions in situations with imminent death if he did not choose correctly. He was not sure how he felt about having these constant tests of his loyalty and survival. Why couldn’t he just kill him? That was too heavy a question. He walked across the bridge first. Perhaps it was a show of trust. Perhaps it was authority. He wasn’t sure.

Kaiden looked at Theo and sighed heavily. “We aren’t going to tell them what we did today. As far as anyone knows, we’re wandering around the Seravena and the surrounding area. Got it?” He asked, as he heard a screech from the ladder side of the building. “We don’t have time to think, just move it!” Kaiden added, following the older scar across to the other building. They needed to move, and at this point in Kai’s mind, he was focused on survival. He didn’t like working with the enemy, and he kept an eye on both the one in front and the one coming up behind him. Once the four were across, Kai shoved the plank off and let it clatter to the ground. Okay. Now where. Kaiden looked around and spied a door that led into this building. If they could make it to the ground, they might be able to get away. Maybe. “Inside here?” Kaiden asked, walking towards the door.

“Yeah, cool. This is cool.” It was not cool. “It’s fine and great and wonderful and not at all how we die.” Theo ran across the plank, still sticking as far away from the others as possible and ran to the door that Kaiden pointed to. He tried it, and it was locked. “Great plan, buddy o’ pal. The old world people actually followed instructions or whatever.” He frowned and then started to panic as the bigger, older scar walked up closer. Theo bounded to the side and behind Kai. He was afraid. He was afraid that these guys would turn on them. They had no reason not to kill them. They always killed them. But, instead of murder, the scar slammed his hammer down on the knob and kicked the door in. He turned to look at the two of them. No. Theo was certain he was looking at Kai instead. “Inside, and we hope that with Her guidance, we do not find any additional trouble.” He beckoned for Alex to join him. Trust.

Kaiden still did not trust the two scars, but if they’d wanted them dead, he was sure they’d be dead already. He listened to Theo, gritted his teeth and sighed. “Theo. Calm down.” He bit out, seeing the other man hide behind him. Kaiden watched the older one break the door knob to the door and nodded. Her? Oh. The prophet that they’d killed. Kaiden hadn’t been for that, and anything else some of his people did still made him feel weird inside. The same one that caused them to lose the place she’d been kept at. The place that became known as Martyrs Gate. “They aren’t going to kill us. They would’ve done it by now.” Kai said as he followed the two into the building. Alex looked at Ezekiel and nodded, following him in and putting his back to the wolves. Alex stepped up beside Ezekiel. “Why are we trusting them? Why aren’t we killing them?” Alex asked, confusion in his voice. He was conflicted because he’d never liked the killing but it was what he’d been trained to do.

Ezekiel did not trust them. He was having a hard time finding reasons to trust them with their histories, but at the same time, no one was dead yet. No one was attacking. They were working together. There were only reasons for trust. Would that backfire on them? He didn’t know. It didn’t before. “Do you want to kill them?” He asked instead. A question to answer a question. Ezekiel may not have known Alex long, but he felt that he knew this well enough. He glanced back at those behind him, and his breath caught for a moment. Why weren’t they killing them?

To say that he was jumpy or possibly skittish would be giving Theo too much reservation. Any movement from the other two made his tense body twitch. Sure, that made sense. If the scars wanted to kill them, they would have. At least that was what he assumed would happen. The fact that it wasn’t what was happening was stressing him out. He didn’t like the unknown. From behind the other two, Theo quietly asked, “hey, Kai. If they’re not trying to kill us, what if your mystery guy yesterday was a scar? Like for real? Because they don’t just want to string people up and disembowel them?” He didn’t know how he would feel if this were actually true. It was fun to consider earlier but now it was real.

Alex looked at Ezekiel then back to the other two. He was already questioning a lot of their beliefs in his mind, and perhaps this war was just another thing to question. “No.” Alex answered honestly, and he drew back a moment. If he said that to anyone else, it wouldn’t end well for him. This was their duty, their job. They had to kill wolves and demons. But what if all wolves were not the same? What if some were just people and not killers? “I.. I don’t want to kill them.”

Kaiden looked up ahead at the other two. He had no idea what was going on, all he knew was they were currently walking down stairs to the bottom floor of this building. That didn’t make him nervous, what did was the fact they were with scars. Kai glanced at Theo when he heard his words. “Theo. What I’m about to tell you cannot leave this building.” What was he doing? Kaiden sighed as he walked. “The man who saved me yesterday was the scar up ahead. The older one. Without him.. I’d be dead.” Kaiden finally revealed the truth of yesterday’s events. “But do not tell anyone, please. Especially not my family.”

Though he was almost certain he knew the answer to his question, Ezekiel found himself relieved to hear it. There had been a small sliver of himself that feared he had been wrong or feared that Alex’s loyalty might outweigh his own opinions. “Neither do I,” he admitted as well. It was important that Alex knew that his feelings were valid. He was not alone. “These men have done nothing against us. They have helped us in this disastrous time.” He paused. No, not yet. But he would tell Alex. “She tells us to preserve the humanity that is left in this world. We are imperfect. Perhaps so are they. Perhaps it is not our place to judge so quickly.”

Theo’s eyes went wide, and his body tensed even worse than it already was. He had to shoved both hands over his mouth not to be as loud as he very much wanted to be. “No freaking way.” He looked down the stairs, stairs that should be coming to an end relatively soon, and stared at the back of the man who was apparently his best friend’s savior. “He- oh man, shut up.” He shoved Kaiden hard enough to make a point but not to cause any problems. “That guy? Mister I’m-better-than-all-of-you-I’m-pious-and-you’re-a-dog guy?”

Alex heard the admittance from Ezekiel and let out small breath of air. He wasn’t sure how his leader would take his words, but he was thankful. He listened as they came to the bottom floor and nodded his head. “Perhaps we do judge much too quickly.” Alex agreed as he moved away from the stairs to give the two wolves room.

Kaiden looked at Theo, saw his eyes widen. He also saw him shove both hands over his mouth. He felt the shove from Theo and nodded with a sigh. “Yes that guy. Though in all honesty, I’m still not sure why. We didn’t exactly talk about it. He ran off and my patrol came back. So just leave it be. It happened, it’s done, and we’re going to go our separate ways the moment we can. I’ll never have to see him again.” Kaiden said as they came to the ground floor. Without waiting, he moved to the door and opened it, looking around. It seemed clear. There was a few buildings up further that they could go to. Maybe after those they’d be far enough from the infected to safely split and go their separate ways. “Let’s move to that building. Maybe on the other side we can go our separate ways.”

Theo followed quickly after, staring at the older scar for way too long as he passed before finally moving out of the building and looking around. He paused and listened, but he was so rattled by everything that happened that he was struggling to notice anything. Ezekiel placed a hand on Alex’s shoulder in affirmation. They were thinking the same way. He moved out of the building as well and listened. “The demons are still close. We are likely to draw attention here. We need to go further down this street, though this area seems to be in ruins.” Finding the path from there could be difficult. He turned to the wolves. “Is this an area with which you are familiar? We have not been here before.”

Kai looked around and then at the other two. He followed them out of the building and looked around. He could still hear them but his focus shifted as he listened to the scar. Kaiden shook his head in answer to the question. “We have not been here before. In fact, I’m kind of all turned around. And possibly kind of lost at this point.” Kai admitted, biting his lip. When he looked around, he realized that he had no idea where they were. Alex sighed as he heard that. Great. Now they were all lost. “So we make our way down the street and go from there?” Alex asked.

It was not reassuring that everyone was in a new territory now. Theo felt like this was definitely how they died. This was a terrible idea. Why had he thought this was a good idea? Ezekiel smiled at Alex with a nod. “That is the best plan we have had so far.” He felt calmer in the knowledge that they were among others who needed the assistance for survival. If all of them were lost, then there was no way to lead someone into a trap. Though, at this point, he did not believe that the other two would do that. He may not know them well, and either he was reading them well enough or they were excellent liars. He began to walk down the street, back to the rest. Theo blinked, sighed, and shrugged. “You know what? It is the best plan.” He started following, and walked backwards to face Kai as he spoke. “Look at us, man. Two bros going on an adventure with our totally non-aggressive scar buddies who aren’t gonna kill us, because we already know they don’t do that apparently.” He turned around as he moved down the street. “That’s not at all confusing and against everything we’ve learned about them. Nope, sure isn’t.”

Kai really did have a penchant for trouble, and it was showing more and more. He should’ve stayed home, gotten some sleep but sleep wouldn’t have come. He knew that now. So he walked beside these two, the two he should hate. Two he should kill. Alex nodded at Ezekiel and then at the other two. What a first trip to the main land this was turning out to be. Kaiden shook his head as they moved, looking at Theo. “Okay. So our adventure changed a little bit. But why don’t we give our names? If we’re going to be surviving for a little, might be easier to communicate should something happen. What does everyone think? I’ll go first. Names Kaiden. But I usually go by Kai. Now, our lovely and not at all murderous friends, who are you.” Kaiden asked, glancing between them. Alex wasn’t so sure he should give his name out and he looked to Ezekiel for guidance.

Names gave something personality and meaning. They did not give names to the livestock that they slaughtered for meat for it would hurt if they held that. Names created a connection that was harder to shake. Names made them human. A human named Kaiden walked beside him. A human who called them friends. A human that Ezekiel had saved several times and had been saved by as well. Ezekiel hesitated. He was not sure what he should do. He was breaking every rule. “Hello, I’m Theo!” He bounded on the other side of Kai. “Well, actually, my parents decided Theophilus was a good name because ‘the High Priest in Jerusalem also needed a reminder of the love of God’ or something like that, but it’s a mouthful, so I go by Theo. Except for occasionally, I’m T.” Ezekiel looked from one man to the other. Debating. Well, he was already breaking all of the rules. He was already cavorting with the enemy. He was already plagued with thoughts and dreams about this one. Kaiden. He might as well give in. “Seraphites,” he began. “We are not defined by the scars on our faces. We are Seraphites.” I looked ahead to make sure that they were not going to be surprised by anything. He doubted it with how loud that crash was. “I am Ezekiel.” He turned to Alex and nodded. He may share his name if he wished.

Kaiden waited, he heard Theo give his name, and then the one that had been on his mind and in his dreams spoke. Ezekiel. He felt a small smile cross his face as he nodded. Alex looked at the nod from his leader and nodded back. “Hello. My name is Alexander, but I uh usually like to be called Alex.” He said as he walked beside Ezekiel. Kaiden looked between the two before he looked ahead of them. “Seraphite. Ezekiel and Alex. Okay. Well it’s nice to have names to call you.” Kaiden finally spoke, his gaze still looking ahead of them. This forgetting everything happened just got a whole lot harder now that he had a name to connect to the face. Kaiden did not know why they decided to call them scars, but then again, he did not understand completely why they were at war. It was just how it had been for years. The silence was thick but neither Kai nor Alex knew how to break it.

Theo was silent as he looked at his feet as they walked. He didn’t know what he was supposed to do now that they were all buddies and not going to kill anyone. Were they supposed to just trust that everyone was going to act like they should and find a way out of this crazy mess? He guessed so. There wasn’t a whole lot else he could do. Ezekiel too was silent as they walked. He had not planned on ever seeing the man again he left in the streets. He thought that it would be something he could eventually push aside. Perhaps not anymore. He glanced at the other. Kaiden. He looked away. What was he going to do? Tell him that he couldn’t do anything but think about the day before? No, he could not do that. But he wanted to talk to him. Well, he wanted to know more. “Mm, Kaiden?” He played with the shape in his mouth. “And.. Theo. Why are you out here? If you do not know this area, I mean.”

Kaiden felt like he was be suffocated by the silence. Memories from yesterday playing in his mind. He wanted to bring it up, talk about it but he didn’t want to make whatever this was even more weird. His eyes glanced over to look at Ezekiel who’d spoken to him. A small quiet chuckle slipped out before he could stop it. “We uh were looking to do something dangerous by going somewhere new. Find something exciting.” Kaiden admitted, thinking that they had found something new. A weird truce thing with the same man who’d saved his life. The same man he’d saved. Alex gave a look at these two, shock on his face. They did this on purpose? Did they mean to get lost too? Probably not. Kaiden waited to hear what kind of a response he’d get, because this was definitely not what he saw happening today.

Now that Kaiden said it out loud, Theo was feeling a whole lot more self-conscious about their poor decision-making skills. He still stuck by the determination that they needed something exciting, though he was realizing just how stupid of an idea this really had been. If these scars- um, Seraphites hadn’t shown up, would they have gotten away from all those infected? Ezekiel was both astonished and alarmed by the answer. “You.. wanted to do something dangerous?” That was shocking. Why would anyone choose to do something like this knowing the consequences. “Is that.. is that why you were..” Ezekiel was having a hard time wrapping his head around this supposedly funny idea of choosing something dangerous when Ezekiel’s friends and family were dying at the same time. “Was a swarm of demons who would have killed you not enough for you?” Because if that were true, then he felt that perhaps he was too quick not to judge. This was why they did not deal with wolves.

Kaiden huffed and glanced away. Sure it sounded stupid now, but it didn’t earlier. He looked back at Ezekiel when he mentioned yesterday and crossed his arms. “Yesterday was an accident. I wandered off but certainly wasn’t expecting a swarm of infected to show up. It was because of yesterday that I’m out here now. I needed to clear my head.” Kaiden said, shifting to walk a little further away from Ezekiel. He didn’t like being judged, sure he’d made stupid mistakes, but he was impulsive. He had been ever since he was little. Especially when he wanted to do something. More than once he’d had to be tracked down when he was little because he’d just do stuff. He’d just run. His mind was his own worst enemy and when he couldn’t stop thinking about something, he tried to do something else to get his mind off it. “Let’s just.. find a safe place to separate and forget this happened.” Kaiden muttered. Alex listened to the two talk, confusion and a little fascination in his body.

“Is it clear now?” Ezekiel prided himself on being a devoted and faithful Seraphite. He loved that he could finish out his day by going home to his family and recounting his accomplishments as a distinguished warrior. He loved their island as well as all of the earth. Living off the land as he heard some wolves say it was exactly what he thought he was meant to do. He thought of himself as kind and understanding. Yet, as Kaiden moved away from him as he pouted from Ezekiel’s words, he felt no desire to end the conversation. In fact, he felt a fire that he so rarely had inside him. “Did even more do enough to clear your head? Perhaps we should turn around and head back into yet another unwinnable battle. Would that be exciting and dangerous enough for you?” He did not know that he could be so clipped in his words. He did not know that he could carry such anger. Something about this set him off in a way he had not expected. “Hey!” Theo thought that now might be a good time to interject. “That’s not fa-“ “Quiet, dog. I was not speaking to you. You are not the one who found pleasure while all of my people were dying.” Ezekiel’s kindness had run thin it would seem.

Kaiden stopped walking, he glared at Ezekiel. “How dare you. That’s not what I wanted to happen yesterday or today. I didn’t want to fight them at all, I was hoping we’d find one or two at the most and just enjoy time away from others. And no, it’s not clear. It’s even more foggy now. Maybe killing a scar will help clear it up.” Kaiden snapped, his hand reached for his pistol with that glare still on his face. He noticed Alex go for his bow and bit his lip. Until Ezekiel spoke to Theo that way. “Leave him alone. I never once found pleasure in seeing your people die, because guess what Ezekiel, our people have been dying to, by yours and your people’s hands.” Kaiden snapped, voice low as he moved his hand away from his pistol. “Got anything else to say?”
