Josh blinked as he smiled, hearing Theo. “Hmm. I knew I liked him.” He said at the superhero comment. Josh didn’t say much more as he watched the two head out of the cafeteria. Kai waved bye to his parents before he followed Theo out and towards the armory. “Let’s grab some guns and get going! I’m ready.” Kaiden said with a smile as they got there and Kaiden grabbed a pistol and a rifle before he looked at Theo. “Alright, which way should we go?”

Drake nodded with a smile on his face. Alex looked at Ezekiel and nodded. “I would be happy to be your pair.” Alex agreed as he followed Ezekiel towards their patrol route. His body was shaking a little with excitement at finally being able to get off the island and see the rest of Seattle.

Theo practically ran out of the room and to the armory. Was he hamming it up a little for Kai’s parents. Yeah, for sure. Did he mean every word of that? Of course. He absolutely believed everything he said about them. When they were younger and still expected to participate in the attempts at schooling, adults would ask who their role models were or heroes. It was them. Well, actually, it was Josh and Soren, because they were terrifying but in the most awesome way imaginable. That was why he was right there with Kai joining these trainings as soon as he was allowed. He wanted to be just like them. He strapped on a pistol, grabbed a rifle, and took a couple of clips of ammo for the journey. “Where ya heading?” Rodney asked as they signed out the weapons. “You’re not on a patrol, right?”

Ezekiel moved to Drake and spoke softly. “You are eldest under me. I will defer to you much as I am learning this group. Please be patient with me as I find my way as your leader.” He placed a hand on his shoulder and bowed his head as one would to those of higher status. “Thank you for being so kind with me already.” He moved away and gathered them all again. “We all know the way,” he paused to wink at Alex with a quiet, “almost,” before continuing louder, “then let us go. Stick close together. Alert everyone as you have been trained. I trust in you as She trusts in us.”

Kaiden loved his parents, loved his mother when she was still alive, and he knew they meant well even though Hayden could be a little overprotective but so was Josh. For the first year he joined their patrol, he had been ordered to stick right beside Josh the whole time. As he learned more, he was allowed to move away from his side. Kai looked at Rodney and smiled. “We’re headed to go check out the Serevena and the area there. We’re not on patrol, just needed to get out.” Kai said as he grabbed some more ammo. He said goodbye to him and led the way towards the gate. Harris let them out and they were finally away from the stadium. “Alright. Did we wanna head towards the hotel and then keep going or go in a different direction?”

Drake appreciated the nod, smiling at Ezekiel. “Of course. I will help where I can.” Drake told him as he watched his new leader walk away. Alex chuckled softly at the quiet word and nodded. He stuck close to Ezekiel as they moved, heading towards the route that would take them to the main land. To the city.

Theo shrugged. “Might as well go towards the hotel first and then see where to from there. That way if anyone does see us at the beginning, we don’t look like we’re doing anything too suspicious.” The moment they were out of those gates, waving to the people guarding them, he was already walking pretty fast. Actually, he wanted to run, but that seemed stupid for numerous reasons. “Man, it feels great just to be moving. Sorry your night sucked. And that Own totally stood us up. And yesterday was crazy. But hey. Maybe we’ll run into your mystery savior today. What do you think?”

The way to the city took time, but it was significantly faster with a group. On his own in the dying and gone light, Ezekiel found it much harder to find the way and traverse on his own. He had to tread ever lighter in case there were enemies around. With his lack of sufficient weaponry, it would have been much more difficult to survive. Here, he knew that there were plenty of people that had his back. Much like his last group, though they were not prepared for so many all at once. The memory made him wonder something. “Alex,” he asked as they moved. “Have you ever seen a demon? Actually seen one?”

As they walked, Kai looked at Theo when he spoke. “That makes sense. And we can head towards the bank and then courthouse. Or maybe head deeper into the city.” Kaiden suggested as they moved, and he shrugged a little. “It’s so nice to be out of there. And not have to stick to a patrol route. It does suck but at least I’ve got you. And maybe. Who knows.” Kai said though he wasn’t so sure he wanted to see the scar again. Well. He didn’t and at the same time kind of did. The streets were quiet as they moved, but Kaiden kept his head on a swivel just in case. The infected liked to roam of course.

Alex’s brown eyes were taking everything around them in. The route they were walking, the fact that he was getting closer to the city. He glanced at Ezekiel and shook his head. “No. I’ve never seen one before. Are they as scary as the stories were told about them?”

“That area is nuts,” Theo commented as they moved. “I went out there once years ago, and it was the weirdest feeling. I can see why we never patrol out there. No one likes to remember those FEDRA days.” He skipped forward, letting the energy overtake him for a moment. “I think I want to meet him,” he said, jumping back to the idea that Kai dismissed. “Your savior. I want to be like ‘thanks for saving my bro,’ and also be like ‘who even are you?’ Maybe he’s some kind of rogue survivor out here? Maybe it’s one of the group they never saw again. Um.. Boris and them? Now that would be crazy.”

Ezekiel considered this question. He did not want to scare the younger warrior, but he also did not believe in lying. “That depends on what you find scary. But yes. I do not wish to frighten you, but I want you to understand the dangers we do face each day. They look like people but wrong. Some have misshapen faces and what looks like mushrooms growing from them. They are loud and sound like creatures.” He thought about the many that killed his friends. His family. The ones the wolf killed. “They can be defeated, but they are a great threat. The wolves are humans with murder in their hearts, but the demons are no longer people. It makes them harder to understand.”

Kai nodded as he remembered a few trips to the Serevena. “I went once with Josh and Soren, they showed me where Josh used to live too. The house is over run with plant life but he used to live out past the bank. And I agree, it’s weird out there. Any reminders of FEDRA are horrible.” He agreed before he tilted his head. “I doubt it was Boris, and are you positive you wanna meet him? What if if was a scar.. how would you feel then?” Kai asked as they came closer to the hotel. He wasn’t even sure if he’d want to meet him again.

Alex listened to Ezekiel as he talked. Misshapen faces, mushrooms growing out, screeching like animals. Alex shivered a little bit as he listened. Sure the wolves were humans that liked to kill, but demons. Those weren’t humans anymore. “Thank you for explaining that. I understand they are a great threat, and I will do my best to protect our lands and our group.”

Theo shrugged as they traveled. “I mean, I dunno.” Did he want to meet a scar? He met plenty of scars, and they all wanted him dead. But this guy didn’t kill Kaiden, so what did that mean? “If your mystery savior was a scar, then yeah, I think I would want to meet him. We could ask him why he didn’t just kill you like the rest of them would. And I don’t mean I wanted this dude to kill you! Just.. like what’s different about this dude?” He pointed at the hotel. “Wanna check it out first or travel somewhere else?”

As they moved, Ezekiel considered saying several things, though he was not sure how much he should say to one so much younger and one who was under him in a group. “We know very little about the demons other than they are the direct consequence of the sins of humanity. Though I have battled them numerous times, I do not have an abundance of experience. Throughout the ten years that I have been a warrior who travels these lands, I have only encountered them a handful of times. Not all ended without casualties.”

Kai looked at Theo and sighed under his breath. “You and me both man. I’d love to know why he didn’t kill me like they normally do.” He said softly before he glanced at the hotel. “Nah. Let’s go check out somewhere new. We could go down towards the suburbs, er what used to be the suburbs. Out past the bank maybe? I know patrols don’t go there anymore so I’m sure it’ll be interesting.”

Alex listened, nodding as he walked. He’d heard the story of the demons, monsters that resulted from the sins of humanity. The reason they have these scars on his face was to prove that they were imperfect. He ran a finger over his scar and then looked at Ezekiel. “I see. Okay.” Alex went quiet, his mind whirring with the new information on the demons as they drew closer to the main land.

Theo glanced at his best friend, brother, and wondered why that sounded a bit off. Instead of asking the question, since this whole conversation clearly had something else going on that he did not understand yet, he decided to also move on. “Yeah, you know what, let’s do the suburbs. We never get to go out there. There’s bound to be something interesting. Like.. like um, remnants of a crazy group of people who leave notes all around and we have to puzzle out their history. Wouldn’t that be cool?” He picked up his pace just a little, because he was eager to find something new. It was like he was a little kid again, and he loved that. They very rarely got the chance to do that.

The group was quiet as they traveled the rest of the way to the mainland. The closer they got, the more likely there would be others who could hear them. This particular route was not one that he had done much before, so Ezekiel was not entirely comfortable with their movements. He trusted in his group as he trusted in all the Seraphites. She guided them, and he relished in that. Though, as he thought that, he pictured the events of the day prior. Did She guide him to their deaths? Did She guide them to such a strange individual? He was lost in his thoughts as they moved inward.

Kaiden was thankful that Theo moved on. He didn’t want to think much more about the scar. Kai nodded with a quiet laugh. “That sounds like a great time. Let’s be quiet though, once we get further away from here, we could find infected.” He said as he walked away from the hotel. “Who knows what we’ll find.” He added as he walked, seeing the gate that marked the end of this patrol route. “Once we’re through there, it’s all new territory.”

Alex was quiet, looking at the buildings of the main land as they traveled in. His head swung around as he listened and looked. He kept close to Ezekiel as he did because he didn’t know what they’d find or what would find them. Drake moved beside Ezekiel and looked at him. “Our patrol starts right up here and swings around all these buildings.” Drake’s voice was quiet as he used his hand to show the route he spoke of.

Theo pointed to that gate. “You see that thing? That is the only thing stopping us from being free of responsibility and overbearing adults who think that we’re still little kids.” He bounded up to it and banged a hand on it. “We are not little kids anymore. We are full grown adult men. And you know what adult men do? They escape from tyranny.” He laughed.

Ezekiel blinked several times as Drake moved to his side. He pulled himself from his thoughts and memories to listen. He scanned the area as he took in the patrol route. “Good. We can move quickly through here if he split into our pairs. Stay in the same route going the same way, always aware of where we all are.” He nodded to him and looked at the rest. “May She guide you.” He turned to Alex and touched his lips. Now they were quiet unless necessary. He moved slowly along the route, waiting for the rest to spread as they would normally so that he and Alex could fill in the gaps.

Kai looked at the gate, then at Theo. “That’s exactly it. This gate is our ticket to freedom. Away from parents who think we’re still five.” He said with a grin, as he walked up to the gate. “Here we go.” Kaiden said, reaching a hand up for the top of it. “Boost me up, once I’m on top, I’ll help pull you up.” Kaiden said, looking at Theo with a big smile. This is exactly what he needed.

Drake nodded and moved to his pair, a woman named Laurel. The rest of the group split into pairs and moved off. Just far enough to search and still close enough to whistle. Alex looked at Ezekiel and saw the finger on his lips. Quiet. He grabbed the handle of his bow and held it in his hand. He walked beside Ezekiel and searched, not completely sure what he’s looking for.

Oh man, this was exciting. This was the kind of stuff that Owen did, and they didn’t even have Owen. What was up with that? They were totally going to have to tell him about everything he missed to go hang out with Abby. He moved over to Kai and bent down, ready to boost him over. “Got it.”

Ezekiel caught Alex’s attention, and pointed to his own eyes before pointing to the rest. Watch. That was the best way to learn. He moved them close enough to other groups so that Alex could see how they moved and searched around them. Everyone could teach him the theoretics all day, but until Alex could see it and do it, he would never truly learn. He listened closely, trying to hear if they had any others around. It was more likely that they would find wolves than demons, but they could never be too careful.

Kai nodded as he looked at Theo. He put his foot out and once he got boosted, grabbed onto the gate and sat down on it, one leg on either side. He bent down a hand to Theo to pull him up and onto the gate too. This was so exciting, he’d never done anything like this before.

Alex looked at Ezekiel then at the others. Oh. Watch them. See how they move. Got it. Alex nodded as he kept eyes on the others and his surroundings too. He kept close still but he was getting a little more comfortable as they went. Alex began to imitate how the others worked, trying to do it as well.

Theo reached up to and grabbed Kai’s hand, walking up the side of the gate. He hefted himself over and sat on the top. “Come on, man. Let’s do something wild.” He looked out over the edge of their usual territory and dropped down on the other side. It didn’t look any different, but he knew that it was. He could feel the change.

Ezekiel watched Alex, making sure that he was comfortable or at least doing well. He clearly already knew much of this, and he was fast at picking it up. Good. He caught his eye and nodded with deep approval. For sixteen, young Alexander had so much potential. Even as they suffered loss, She provided for them in great ways. With Alex feeling more at east, Ezekiel let out a whistle of question. Has anyone seen anything or anyone?

Kai watched as Theo climbed the gate and sat on top as well. He looked around at their territory then on the other side of the gate. “Right behind you.” Kai said as he dropped down onto the ground. This was new, and he could feel the change. “This is crazy and exciting.” Kaiden said as he started walking. His eyes looking around at the area. So far it seemed clear of infected.

Alex was moving along, learning and listening. He caught Ezekiel’s eye and saw that nod of approval and smiled happily. He heard the whistle of question and looked at the others. Drake let out a whistle that meant no. He hadn’t seen anything and another whistle of no from another pair. So far so good.

“Right?” Though he did not know this area, Theo felt relatively safe talking while they moved. It was open enough that if something heard them and wanted to come after them, they would be safe. Probably. At least while they weren’t in any enclosed spaces or buildings. “Okay, okay. Where to first. We’ve got those buildings over there, and then that all looks like a whole jungle but you know how that is. I think the real suburbs start back that way?”

The surround sound of whistled negatives was a good sign. He loved when they were alone on these. Fighting the wolves always made him a little uneasy. The demons also made him uneasy, but that was because they felt so unnatural. But the wolves. They were people. People were unpredictable. Obviously. His mind wandered back to the man from yesterday. Unpredictable. Or maybe he was the unpredictable one. He blinked a few times, realizing that he did not take in any of the space around them. He quickly turned to scan the area. He could not let his mind wander like that.

Kai looked around, eyes scanning the area. He glanced at Theo when he heard the question. “Hm. Maybe the buildings first and go from there? Perhaps there’s more beyond those that we can explore.” Kai said as he turned to walk towards the buildings. His eyes looked around them but so far it seemed quiet enough.

Alex heard the surrounding whistles of no. Good. At least they were alone. Alex didn’t want to fight demons or wolves but with wolves it was harder. They were people still, they still had humanity inside, unlike the demons. Alex didn’t believe in their war with the wolves but he didn’t question it. He knew better than to do that. His head snapped around as he heard something. A short sharp whistle of alert, and he caught Ezekiel’s eye and pointed to a building beside him. He’d heard something inside.

Theo nodded and headed that way. “What do you think we’ll find in there?” He moved with almost a fervor. He was just so ready to do something for themselves. He was pretty sure it wouldn’t be as cool as the aquarium or anything, but they could still find some awesome treasures in there right? Probably.

Ezekiel snapped back to focus as the sharp whistle. He spun towards it then caught Alex’s eye. So he heard something. This was why he could not allow himself to get distracted. He moved towards the building and peered inside. The darkness of shadows made it difficult to see. He moved to the open front door and stepped inside, moving out of the way to wait for Alex to join him.

Kaiden shrugged and shook his head. “I have no idea. Maybe infected or maybe really cool old world stuff.” Kai said as he made it to the building. He checked the door and it swung open. “After you man.” He said with a grin, gesturing for Theo to step in first. This was exciting and dangerous and just what Kai needed to distract him from the scar.

Alex followed Ezekiel to the building, his steps quiet as he watched his friend step inside. He moved in behind him, looking around the darkened store. As he stepped further in, a screech sounded near his right and then he was knocked to the ground. Alex instinctively tried to get away, hands on the things chests trying to avoid its mouth.

Theo moved into the building first, turning on his flashlight. It was not super dark with the sun shining through some of the windows. There were some dark spots, and since they were not used to these places, Theo thought being safer was probably a better idea than not. He wanted to be reckless not dead. Thankfully, it was looking like a boring building so far. Or maybe not thankfully? He didn’t know what he wanted to find honestly.

Demon. Ezekiel swiveled around, and swung the hammer down and to the side of the demon’s face so that it smashed through it and to the ground. He kicked the thing off of his friend slammed the smaller hammer with his other hand across it’s head for good measure. It writhed like a dying bug, tiny crackles of voice petering out. He put a hand out for Alex, but his head snapped to the side. There were more, and this one alerted them to their position.

Kai followed after, switching his flashlight on as well. He looked around but it seemed rather empty. “What do you think this building used to be?” He asked softly as he headed further in. There was a big desk, some shelving units, and a hallway with a door just before it. He moved towards the hallway, looking around.

Alex was breathing hard, seeing the demon smashed off him. His eyes were wide as he looked up at Ezekiel before he heard more. Oh no. Alex took his hand, took a moment to breathe before he got to his feet. His bow was aimed up this time. He caught movement and turned firing at a demon in the head, sending it down. He backed up to a shelf and kept his head on a swivel like he’d been taught in training. Another one appeared and he fired, this arrow knocking it down but it was still alive. Another shot, down. He had no idea how many there were.

Theo moved to the big desk and needlessly hopped over it when he could just walk around and looked around to see if there was any sign for what this building could have been. “Um not sure. This is clearly some sort of reception desk. Maybe.. I don’t know an office building of some sort? Or maybe like one of those fancy places where you have to wait to be called in for something in a back room. I heard some of the older guys talking about places like that.” He pushed the mouse of a computer as he hopped back to the main area and peered down the hall.

Ezekiel made a mental note to praise Alex when they were no longer in danger. Until then, he rushed around the side of the building, staying where he could still see Alex, but moving so that he had a better view. As Alex took down several, Ezekiel heard another. No, two? Two others. He stood by an open door and waited. They were coming. They came running and screeching in, and Ezekiel went in swinging. He swung his large hammer at the same time that he turned his body so that the hammer cleaving into the first demon’s head could be used as momentum to keep the spin going to smash his smaller hammer in to the second and then the large one to bring that one down too. They dropped writhing, and he waited. No more sound. He whistled a sound of not seeing anymore. Not quite an all clear but a potential for dangers being subdued.

Kai glanced over at Theo, jumping over the desk and rolled his eyes with a snort as he looked down the hallway. "It's so weird, places like this. I can't imagine how they used to work back when the world was normal." Kai commented as he walked down the hall, looking back at Theo. There were some doors back here, but each one Kai tried was locked. "I can't seem to find an open door." He huffed out, moving further down the hall. The last door was open, and Kai looked in. A screech sent him running backwards, and a runner followed him out of the room. Kai didn't want to use his pistol in case there were more, so he twisted away from the runner, got behind it and managed to stab it's neck, dropping it to the ground. "Well then. That was unexpected and at the same time, probably should've figured that would happen."

Alex heard the whistle and lowered his bow, not putting it away yet though. He looked around the area and moved further in, coming towards Ezekiel. Alex was shaken, but he swallowed hard, trying to calm himself. It was unexpected and strange and that was his first encounter with a demon. He didn't hear anymore, so he turned to head out of the building, looking back at his friend to make sure that was what they should be doing.
