Fandom Fallout: Legends of the Badlands

"I used to be a scavenger for Haven two years ago. Nothing is too higly iraddiated around here. Although a lot can change in two years," Alex said from behind Daphne.

He noticed more building approaching and remember his old job. Slowly but shurly, memories flooded into his head.

Dode had only read about Pip-Boys back home, devices with incredible functionality, and truly a wanderer's best friend. The envy was almost unbearable. He watched as the ghoul, Alan fiddled with the buttons on Jay's Pip-Boy, before announcing a rough 30 minute walk to the factory...

"Half an hour?...Ah think ah could pull off a brisk hobble if you want tae be there quicker?", Dode remarked, a thin smile across his face. He looked ahead, while pulling his rifle round to his front, *CLICK*, he detached the scope and let the rifle swing back behind him. He hobbled forward ahead of the group, wincing lightly with each step then pulled the scope up to his right eye, scanning the horizon. The land ahead was still, except for the gentle breeze blowing through the bare trees...the walk to the factory should be easy, he thought.

"You see much up there?" Jay called forwards to Dode. Having never known many people from outside Colonia, he'd never heard so many different accents before; he assumed that Dode was Scottish, but he didn't quite recognise Daphne's accent. Even though this whole world lay just outside his doorstep, it all seemed completely foreign to him; just walking down the beaten old path, he'd already seen more trees than in his entire life. Honestly, it was a little overwhelming.

Walking forwards, Jay passed a rotting rabbit carcass caked in a layer of dirt. A tiny, white flower had sprouted out of the eye socket, and there was small growth of mushrooms on the dead creature's back.

'Shame. If we'd have left a few days earlier, the poor fellow could've been dinner,' he thought.
Daphne

With a nod towards Alan and Jay, Daphne took up a spot behind them. Someone behind her, someone in front.

It had been a long time since she'd been out in the wastes...sadly, it hadn't been long enough. After her last experience, and all the years beforehand, she didn't exactly look forward to this little trip.

"How can we be sure there isn't some sort of mutated horror waiting for us just beyond the factory's doors?" She asked. Most of the buildings left standing around here were either taken over by highwaymen, or inhabited by monsters. "Or, what if the radiation levels are dangerously high in said building?"
At the comment about dangerously high radiation and smirked just saying "Wouldn't that be fun?" He continued on his way talking to Jay "So, not many be willing to travel with my ugly mug. Why'd you opt to be so cordial?" Alan's gamma gun shook each time he took a step. "Y'know what, scratch that. Doesn't matter. I guess you'd like to trade life stories?"

"Not much to tell really," he sighed, quickly glancing down to his Pip-Boy to check that they were still on course.

"I never knew my mother, so I was raised by my dad," Jay began, before quickly deciding that maybe he ought not tell people he just met sensitive information. After all, his father was a defector, and people seemed to dislike disloyalty more than simply being with the Army of the Crown.

"He spent his life believing that ghouls were monstrosities... Until one saved his life. From then on, he raised me to treat everybody how I'd want to be treated. Sounds a bit Red Robin, but it's a good thing to live by. I've never left Colonia until today, so this is quite the adventure for me. What about you? You seem like you've got some stories to tell."

Mary''s eyes widened as she overheard the conversation between Jay and the others. Could it be the same man, she thought moving closer to Jay trying to get in more of the conversation."If you want to get in more with red Robins I can sort something."She mentioned.

"That's a safe bet. I'm a Birmingham boy before the war got into full swing. Worked with some scientists in London back before it turned into a caricature of a basilisk's arse. Did some...unsettling things for a while, butnhey, not too manyoung haven't in this day and age. Then boom! My skin fell off and I went travelling. Eventually ended up back here. If you need a brain, I'm your guy. Not for a lobotomy or something like that. One bloke literally tried to scoop my brain. With a goddamnit spoon!" Alan laughed for a moment before staring back at the caravan and trying to discern how close we were.

Daphne

With Alan's mocking comment, Daphne shot a sour glare his way, but stayed quiet. If these idiots wanted to die, she'd happily let them.

Jay's Pip-Boy was a wonder Daph hadn't ever seen. It was currently tracking their path, so there was one function, and who knew what else it could do. If he died, she may just have to take a closer look at the little machine. Undoubtedly, however, others were thinking the same. It was the perfect traveling companion.

As the group trudged on, Daphne took another opportunity to observe her fellow deserters. There were more guys than girls. One of the girls had just made a comment about the Red Robins, which was quite dangerous should they be in the company of a Crowny, and another had the assultron follower. She seemed a tad weird.

Then, there were the boys. One was a cripple, obviously trying to prove himself useful even in his moment of weakness. Another, the ghoul, Alan, seemed to be the brains of this expedition. Then, there was Jay. He seemed nice enough, tolerable at least. He'd probably end up being the only one she didn't hate.

Cataloguing her observations, she shook her head and adjusted the position of her duffle bag, continuing on.

Jay turned to Mary and laughed quietly.

"Get in with the Red Robins? You must be joking. Even I know that that's dangerous business, and I'm not much of a fighter. I'd rather stick to the day ahead, for now. Long term comes later."

He quickly redirected his attention to Alan's story.

"Scientist, eh? You must be a pretty smart guy, even after some attempted brain surgery," he laughed.

"And you, Mary? You got a story for us? You certainly look like someone who's seen a lot."

"You never know I am not a great father either but they have good uses for us. I am more recon and medicine myself. You never know might be surprise you and do some good in the process." Mary said smirking at his reaction, not unexpected and part of her was glad at least she know he and his father wouldn't be a red Robin asset. "As for me.., Not much to say, refugee from Ireland as a kid escaping the IRA though in the end traded one suppressive regime for another with the crow. Long story short trouble with crown, dead parents and me finding my way to the Robins."

Noticing the conversation up ahead, Alex ran up to the others. "Hold on," he said, "You know the Red Robins?" Alex thought about the stories he heard of them defeating Balisks by the hundreds. Of course he new that was a tall tale but it didn't make them any less astounding.

"If I was and said I was I would have to kill you."She said with a mock mysterious look a sly smile before chuckling. "Take it anyway you want to.... Alex was it?"She asked looking at the brown haired guy. He was cute in a way though held no other real interest truly to her.

"Yah... Alex," he shyly responded. She didn't look very dangerous to him now but he could tell she would kick some ass in battle. "And your, Mary, right?"

"Yeah... Come on down be so shy, I am still human like the rest of you."Mary said noticing his awkwardness at her giving him a gently touch on his shoulder.

"I have my own reasons for avoiding people. It's more of a personal thing. If we survive long enough I might tell you. For now I just..."

He paused at that and remembered his Mother and Sister.

"... I'll go up ahead and scout out the area," He said to the group.

He jogged a little farther up the path, ground crunching under his shoes, and took a look ahead. He looked out and saw the remnants of a town and city farther on. What a pity.

Nic followed along with the group, well behind it watching them and seeing that some looked to her. She really didn't feel like getting to know them as they would likely part ways after the bunch went to the factory. She was interested in the pipboy as they were very rare as from what she knew the parent company that made them had been in the states so they were likely everywhere over there but hadn't made it over seas. The idea of them being in the states was of course assuming anyone was left there.

" Ma'am maybe you should make an effort to speak with the others" Tess said striding beside Nic.

" No I'm not in their group we are just going the right way we don't need to get acquainted " Nic replied not one for idle chatter and really if no one asked her a bunch of questions she would be happy. There were always to many questions someone trying to barter her services or wanting to know what she was doing, just to many questions.

Watching observantly, Jay's eyes followed Alex forwards. He'd noticed for a while that they were going uphill, and by the looks of it, Alex was now at the top.

"Alex, you see anything up there?" He yelled over to him, perhaps a little too loud. Inwardly he kicked himself for being so stupid; now every bastard or beast around would know of their presence.

Ferrin let out an angry growl at the state of things. Granted she was just fine, and there wasn't much of an issue over all for herself. She was close enough to her destination to reach it, and even though he'd just been some old codger hobbling about hocking his wares, she had to admit, his almost fatherly attitude towards her was going to be missed.

Nudging one of the mutated dog corpses out of the group that attacked her, Ferrin sighed as she began to pile them up before moving over to the old trader's body. Funny enough, she hadn't even learned his name, just referred to him as old man. Relieving him of his money for the pure fact that he wasn't going to need it, she granted him a final farewell and bid for safe travels along the low road before folding his hands over his chest and using her survival kit to set fire to him. She always figured she'd prefer to be burned than left for the beasts.

Sitting a short ways away, Ferrin rested inside an old dried drainage pipe sticking out of the hill she was on and closed her eyes to rest.

~Roughly and hour later~

"Alex, you see anything up there?"

Jolting awake to the voice, Ferrin hand immediately withdrew her combat knife given the close quarters, but she just as quickly calmed herself as she saw that there was no one in immediate view of her. Sheathing the blade and lifting her spear, she moved towards the opening of the pie and hopped out, looking around before spotting a group at her eleven, if the top of the hill was her twelve.

They were heading away from her, and Ferrin almost thought to stealthily attack before realising they weren't from any one group. Instead she gripped her spear and slowly crept up hill behind them, making a point to stay as quiet as possible as she grew closer and closer to the group. As their distance slowly lessened the Dragoon lifted a small stone from the ground while keeping her spear ready in her right hand. Ensuring it wouldn't hit anyone, but would draw attention, Ferrin took aim and tossed the stone into a piece of rubble sticking up from the ground. The resulting thud would have been enough to get people to turn around, hopefully without immediately shooting her.

"From Colonia?"

"You see much up there?"

Dode heard the question from Jay, probably everyone heard it, and to reply would need the same volume so he stayed quiet, motioning to keep it down behind him with his free arm.

Someone else ran past him, heading straight ahead, most likely running off to scout ahead. Hope he doesn't go too far... If something is waiting for him, then we're all back here, Dode thought to himself. He reached back for the rifle and reattached the scope, slid the safety off and pulled the rifle into his shoulder. Carrying this with the crutch was going to be a nightmare...

"Alex, you see anything up there?"

Jay shouted again, louder this time. Dode flinched with the noise..."
bloody christ!" he whispered in attempt to calm himself. Dode had been on edge since leaving Colonia, but every step away put him away from safety, and it was only a mile or 2 away from Colonia where he was ambushed. He clutched his rifle tighter.

*CRACK* Dode swung around, dropping his crutch and pulled his Enfield up into a firing position, both eyes open scanning the direction of the sound, everyone was... The noise was loud...but more worryingly... Intentional?

"From Colonia?"

... A woman, spear in hand a littleways down the hill, deadly to be certain... But hostile....? Remained to be seen.

Dode scanned her with the scope, blue skinned, "
woad?" he whispered to himself. He'd used the plants and created the blue dye back home...to see it painted on skin was something he'd only read about however... He was too far away to speak without shouting over the rest down the hill... 'she won't try anything surely?' he wondered, "she could've had half o' us in the back before we'd start fighting if she wanted" he said to himself. He pulled his finger from the trigger and rested it against the guard, keeping the scope on her neck.

Mary cringed when she heard Jay just scream after Alex, shaking her head at the stupidity. She walked behind Jay and gave him a light smack on his arm. "Yeah let everyone know we are here would you?" She moaned before she heard the stone drop. She reacted instinctively taking her sten gun and pointing it at the source.

"Well she couldn't have considered saying cheerio to us?" She asked sarcastically at Dode.

Ignoring Mary for a moment, Jay drew his bat from his backpack and jogged to the back of the group to get a better view of what was going on. The person obviously was a tribal of some kind; if the face-paint didn't give it away, the spear did. He'd never met someone from a tribe before.

Jay tried to look tough and took on a domineering pose; wide stance, puffing his chest out slightly, and resting his bat on his shoulder.

"We might be. Who are you?"

He wasn't used to being this confrontational, and inside he was growing more fearful by the minute. More and more questions kept entering his head. Who was she? Where was she from? Was she going to kill them? Honestly, Jay was more ready to run than he was to fight.

After hearing Jay yell out Alex face plamed. God dammit Jay. He looked over the horizon to see if any creatures had become aware of their position. 'Nothing', he thought. 'Jay is so lucky we....' He noticed the outline of 3 creatures out in the badlands. Hornets. Alex turned and ran back toward the others.

Daphne

At Jay's exclamation, Daphne sighed in annoyance. "Couldn't be a little louder?" She mumbled. Here, not too far from Colonia's gates, she doubted there would anything deadly lurking around. Still, there could be various mutated animals scattered across the wasteland.

When a stone clattered across the ground beside her, she rubbed her eyes. "Wonderful..." She turned around, pulling one of her blades from it's leather sheath, and faced the rock's thrower.

It was a girl. She wielded a spear, though Daphne doubted that was all she had, and had a generally suspicious and cautious air about her. "From Colonia?" She asked, indicating the rag-tag group's point of origin. Daphne decided not to answer, hanging towards the back of the group.

Alex ran back down towards the group and noicted their weapons were all drawn. "What the hell is going on here? You know, forget I asked. We have about three hornets coming in our direction -thanks Jay- and we need to get moving," Alex announced to the group. Then he saw the girl with the spear. "Shit."

"Hornets?...Shite!", spat Dode. He gave one last glare at the mystery woman then turned towards the hill. He glanced back at the group, "she'll no dae anything", he proclaimed hopefully... "the hornets might cause a few problems though, anyone else want to come and stop them?" he asked, before setting off up the hill, rifle in hand.

After a few steps however, the pain took over, sending sharp spikes up his legs with every step. He started limping, but it was a fast limp, and he hoped none of the others noticed. The hill wasn't steep but it was far for someone who used a crutch to get this far... he wasn't stopping though, he'd dealt with his fair share of the 'buzzy bastards' across the wastes and knew how quickly they can bring down there target...
