"I like your Gift better though. It's probably easier to make friends when you can just make sweets appear out of thin air," Haku comments, "Unless they have diabetes. Then that gets pretty awkward I'd imagine."

"Hmmm as for the request board... Anyone can submit or take on requests. So there's a wide variety of requests and almost an infinite number of them too. There are different categories of requests you can look at and you can manually search in the search bar for specific requests as well," Haku informs.

The pair get on the bus and find two empty seats. Haku takes the window seat and turns to face Alexander. The bus starts moving shortly after and Haku continues where she left off.

"I'm not sure how good your Gift is in terms of combat, so I'd probably stay away from those. Although, if you ever need an escort I can help you in exchange for some sweets. I'd recommend looking at the culinary requests for you though. The requests where everyone can do tend to be taken pretty quickly and don't pay as well as a more specialized request," Haku remarks.

Alexander Cyphre

Well, she was pretty on point. Still...

"I freely admit that I thought on how I could fight with my Gift. I did grow up with both comics and manga, so..."

I smiled, a bit embarassed. I know that it was a bit... what was the word? Chuuni? But I couldn't stop myself.

"Still, it's probably better if I start with culinary request. And I would like your help in doing thing. It would be nice."

Still better than being alone. The bus was driving in the traffic, moving faster than I thought, especially with all the people.

"Did you already do some requests?"

Lexa Gilliam

Everything about this guy was infuriating. His grin, his slightly condensing tone, calling her a kid. The guy looked a heck of a lot younger than she did, that was for sure. Who did he think he was? He really needed a solid kick in the stomach right now.

But then the other woman spoke. Her voice was as odd as her appearance, but was actually fairly calming to Lexa. She remembered was here for a reason. Best not to get herself into trouble before she'd even gotten registered or had a place to live; the last thing she needed was to get kicked out of this place. That, and she'd noticed the masked woman had what appeared at a glance to be a sword on her back, although as she looked at it for a moment, she noted it had a particularly strange shape. Either way, it was pretty good deterrent - Lexa knew she wouldn't last long again an actual weapon while this state, if this did turn into a fight.

Grunting at no-one in particular, slightly frustrated at her inability to do anything right now, she let out a restrained "...whatever."

She walked past the guy who'd been annoying her, roughly pushing him with her shoulder as she did so, mainly to relieve her own tension. Not looking back, she walked up to the nearest metal desk, and began talking to receptionist behind it.

"Hi, I'd, uh, like register myself here, please."

Noticing Alexander's somewhat embarrassed smile, Haku responds encouragingly, "In my opinion it's always good to think about all the different uses your Gift can have. Sometimes it can surprise you. Being able to defend yourself is also pretty important. The BPD and Factions are pretty effective at discouraging any blatant crime in broad daylight but... I like to be on the safe side."

Haku's eyes narrow as she remembers the various fights she's been in.

"Sure." A piece of paper with Haku's Z-Watch number seemingly slides out of her finger, and she hands it to Alexander, "Here's my number if you ever want to contact me."

"I did just finish a request before bumping into you. My job was to intercept a stolen package from a pair of thieves and return it to the owner. It happened in the shadier parts of Brinkhaven, but the people I fought are both in jail now and the package is back with its rightful owner. I've done many requests though," Haku muses.

"What are you planning to do with a high school education?" She questions.

"Thank you."

And I started inputting the number in my Z-Watch while listening to her adventures. It seemed a lot like a comic book and I found myself wanting.

"It sounds really interesting."

Then her question registered.

"Oh, well... partly is because my parents insist, partly because it was the catch for them to let me come here without supervision and partly because i like learning things." I shrugged, before calling the number I just registered in my Z-Watch. Only one ring, before disconnecting.

"You should have my number, now."

Her Z-Watch rings momentarily and then stops. Haku registers the number as a new contact and is about to input the name but pauses.

"Do you prefer Alexander or Alex?" she queries.

"Hmm.. maybe the school can help you find more uses of your Gift," mentions Haku, "I considered going to high school but I wanted to be more active in the Factions. What are your parents like?"

Haku takes a quick peek outside the window, they seem to be nearing their destination.

"in order: Whatever name you find easier, maybe the school can, I would like to be part of the faction but I'm still a bit unsure on how everything works and my parents..."

I stopped for a second, trying to see how I could explain everything.

"They divorced a while ago, my mother returned in Italy, my father remained in the USA, I bounced from one another depending on the time of the year. It's complicated and, honestly, I'm pretty tired of them using me as an ammunition against one another."

[Haku]

"I'll just call you Alex, then," Haku replies, tapping out the letters and confirming the new contact.

"All the Factions want is that you contribute some way and don't cause public disorder and such."

When she hears about Alexander's parents, Haku awkwardly says, "I don't really know what to say, but I'm sorry for touching upon a sensitive subject... I guess this is why I should be thankful that I was an orphan early on."

"Don't worry, it's not sensitive anymore. It's just annoying." I was pretty sure that my expression was saying everything.

"Let's talk more about factions: how do I recognize mission from the faction from the others?" I, very tactfully, didn't say anything about her orphan status. It was pretty much a red flag.

"Also, what kind of mission they ask?"

Haku nods and answers his questions instead.

"When you're looking at requests, some are tagged with 'Factions' and there's even a separate filter for them on BRB. They also issue a variety of requests, since they need people to maintain the Factions. I imagine there are a handful of Faction culinary requests, such as helping out the cafeteria. If there's anything mandatory, it'll pop up as an alert on your Z-Watch. They only send you those if you have the ability to complete it. I get combat-related and manufacturing requests, for example."

Haku pulls on the line, signalling that they wanted to get off at the next stop.

"Well, that's convenient. And strangely reminding me of a videogame or a manga, but whatever."

I opened the Board, curious at what kind of request were there. The answer?

A lot.

"I have the weekend free after I finish registering at the school. Do you think you could help me in some quests? to help me get started?"

I waited for a beat, before dangling the bait.

"I'll make you whatever kind of sweet you want."

If this was a video game or manga, Haku is sure that her eyes would be sparkling right now.
She absolutely cannot hold in her excitement.

"YeahsureI'llhelpyouwithwhateveryouneed."

Haku is caught. Hook, line, and sinker.

She only snaps out of her daze when the bus comes to a stop and a pleasant female voice announces, "Brinkhaven High School. Brinkhaven High School."

I almost felt bad.

Almost.

Still, I was ready to use whatever advantage I had, especially if it was for something so minor like this.

"Well, there is a way to work in a team? I mean, officially registering as one?"

I was walking towards the door of the school, a bit weirded out by the simple fact that I couldn't see anyone around. A school without students, teachers or other personnel was inherently creepy.

"Also, what kind of job do you think would be most suitable?"

[Haku]

"Factions don't exactly officially register teams, but there are people who tend to pair up frequently. But some requests have a people limit to them, so if they only ask for one person it'd be impossible for us to do it together," Haku states, "If we do requests together, the rewards will be split between us though."

The pair's footsteps echo down the hallway.

"Considering you probably can't fight, probably a request at a bakery or sweets shop or the Factions's cafeteria. I can't guarantee your safety if we're in combat. I'm able to help with culinary jobs too since I just need to eat the ingredients beforehand. Let me know a day in advance if we're doing a request together."

Haku stops by a door, and opens it to reveal the school's office.

Ouch. Hearing that I couldn't fight was a bit of a blow, but she wasn't exactly wrong. i mean, I never actually was in a fight, so...

Before entering the room, I turned towards her.

"There is a place where we could.. I dunno, spar or something?"

After her answer, i went to talk with the people at the school office..

[Haku]

Alex wanted to spar? That was rather interesting. Maybe he had something else up his sleeve?

"If you really want to spar, then we can do it in a training room. All the Factions have those. There's an official arena too, but I don't think you want to make our battle public. Are you sure you want to do that?" Haku asks hesitantly.

It was pretty evident that she had vastly more experience than Alex did, and she didn't want to accidentally end up hurting him.

It was a bit strange having the whole conversation on hold while he signed his own transfer papers to the school and whatnot, but when I got out of there Haku was still there.

"We were talking about a spar, right? Yeah, a training room sounds nice. Plus, if I ever find myself in trouble I should have at least an idea on how to defend myself."

I sent her a smile.

[Haku]

"Okay.." Haku is still uncertain, but thinks it's admirable that Alex is trying to figure out how to use his Gift to protect himself.

"I'm assuming you're done here, so let's head back to the Factions," Haku declares.

They both take the bus back to the Elemental Faction building and Haku leads Alexander to the training rooms. Several Gifted could be seen practicing their Gifts against dummies. One hurls fire, another throws a bolt of lightning, and one Gifted even conjures up cats and flings them at the dummies.

Haku mutters to herself, "Cats are not an element."

Finding them both an empty room, Haku addresses Alex, "I don't think it's a good idea for us to actually fight, but I can throw an attack and then you can figure out how to respond to it."

A very sharp dagger materializes through her sleeve and floats next to her.

"Ready?"

Beyond the... particular.... kind of training that the others were doing, it was pretty interesting to see what was happening with the other. A lot of Gift looked a lot straightforward.

Still, it was time to focus.

"Ready."

And I launched myself to the side, rolling and returning on my feet as fast as I could.

The sound of metal hitting the wall wasn't reassuring in the slightest.

"It's my turn now?"

[Haku]

The dagger extracts itself from the wall, returning back to Haku's side.
She's mildly amused at Alex's question though.

"But we're here to help you learn how to defend yourself, not testing my abilities. You can give it your best shot though. It would be good to see what kind of attack you can conjure up with your Gift," Haku responds.

"If you can create caramel and then crystallize it, you could try to block the blade by solidifying it when it's travelling through the caramel," Haku suggests.

"It's an idea." A good idea.

beyond the other that I had in mind, but that was a bit destructive, so... Yeah. Well, lucky me that I like the Final Fantasy series.

"Ok, ready?"

I raised my hand and a lance made of rock candy materialized from thin air, a deep blue, made to look like ice. It wasn't ice, obviously.

Using ice would mean that I needed to materialize icicles or something similar.

I threw the lance as fast as I could, keeping a firm hold with my Gift. I didn't want to hurt her.

[Haku]

Before the lance could hurt her, a slightly curved metal sheet emerges from Haku's jacket and intercepts it. The candy lance shatters upon impact.

Haku raises an eyebrow, "It was a good shot. I'm not so sure about using candy to pierce things since it's so fragile. Blunt force might be more effective. Also, if you can freely crystallize and uncrystallize caramel, you could use it similarly to water and ice. I don't know if you can, but if you could envelope someone partially with caramel you could maybe use the caramel to ragdoll them around."

"Try blocking this again. This time with your Gift," Haku says as the dagger whizzes towards Alex again.

Block it?

The blade was already halfway towards me and I didn't actually have time to think. I simply reacted.

And a thick wall of lemon-flavoured ice sprang up in front of me, the dagger embedding into it. instantly, it froze over.

"I... didn't expect this."

[Haku]

Seeing the disturbingly yellow ice wall, Haku gains some faith in Alex. If he could more or less manipulate ice, then he could be decently useful in combat. It takes a bit of fudging around, but the dagger finally extricates itself from the ice.

"That's not half bad, even if the color is a bit off-putting," Haku remarks, "Can you either try attacking me with that or blocking in a different way?"

The session goes on for roughly 20 minutes, with Alex taking turns attacking Haku and defending against her attacks. Haku continues to give out pointers the entirety of the training session, providing possible uses of his abilities as well as criticizing his technique in some places.

The whole spar lasted... dunno, twenty minutes? At most?

Yet it seemed so much longer. I thought of application for my power that I didn't even consider before. Like the caramel trick.

Sure, I needed to be very careful with the timing, but when it worked... and my multiflavor avalanche was a big hit, too. The jell-O golem would need a bit more of try to actually make it work.

This said, I would need a lot of experience to actually bet Haku.

And yet, I couldn't do anything but dream about me and her fighting against someone, maybe wearing masks or similar...

"Just asking, but... do you think I could try a more... action-focused mission, if I was with you?"
