Blood and Water (♠ Blue Suit ♠)

Mia caught a bit of sadness on his eyes and it wasn't exactly difficult to figure out why, now was it? She ran a hand through her wet hair and gave him a small smile "It's nice to sleep soundly once in a while" She commented. Also, hadn't quite gotten the chance to watch him sleep before. His sleeping face was sort if ... cute. Blinking at her own thoughts, her cheeks turned slightly pink before she shook her head. Get those thoughts out of your head, ya idiot She thought to herself as a silent sigh escaped her lips

Tome looked over at her, and thought she'd smiled but it had gone already. He nodded slightly and pushed himself up into a sit, running a hand down his face. "Too much magic at once. I needed the rest." That was all it was, really. He wasn't sure if he would've slept so soundly if Fawn was here, but it was possible.

"Hmmm" Mia softly muttered. For a moment, just a small moment, she glanced up at the ceiling with a blank expression. In that house it felt like time had stopped. Strange... Today's events seemed to be far away as well. Raising her hand to her cheek, she rubbed it softly. The slap she had received that very day felt like a bad nightmare as well.

Tome got up onto the couch again, finally, and just sat there a long moment. ". . . He hurt you." He said finally, quietly but without preamble, and his fingers curled into the couch cushions. "I should've cut out his heart and been done with it." That man - He'd . . . He'd raped her. There were no excuses for it, and no other words. He wished he could put the man in his own place as a child. A coward like that would've broken and died in less than a week.

"He has a family. They'd have been left alone" Mia declared, still staring up at the ceiling. "His child bore a resemblance to me" With a deep intake of breath, she lowered her gaze to lay it on him "He didn't... He didn't do what he claims and you think he did. I wouldn't say it wasn't any worse though" Her eyes darkened a bit at the statement. "I'm not a person with a golden heart, but I guess I wouldn't lie if I say that maybe it was better for me to have gotten that scar than his own child" Being betrayed by your own father in such a way would've been the worst thing that could've happened to her. She pursed her lips together at the memory.

Every night... Every night kept on that room, being punished because it turned than man on. Wonder if she had to be grateful for that fetish of his though, it had kept him from doing that which would have ended up with breaking her after all. Even if she had ended up broken on her own way. "I'm sorry you got involved, but you know? I'm glad you were there as well" She wrapped her arms around her loosely. And she was glad she was able to remain by his side right now.

Tome looked at Mia, and even if he was grateful that she hadn't been hurt that way, she had still been hurt. There was pain in her eyes, and her arms were crossed in an instinctively defensive stance, and he could almost see the memories swirling around inside her head. He'd never liked that look in Fawn and he didn't like it in Mia, so he got up, walked over to her, and just wrapped his arms around her. ". . . I won't let him touch you again." He promised. "I won't let anyone take you away."

Mia couldn't hide the surprise of being held even if she had wanted to. So she glanced up at him and for a moment, a brief one, she refused to let the arms she had wrapped around her fall back down. But her amethyst gaze soon warmed up, was it because of his words? Or was it because she actually liked to be on his arms? She couldn't tell. She allowed for one of her arms to slid down to her side while she used the other to grasp his arm lightly. "You're too kind" She finally declared, a small smile settling on her lips.

Tome squeezed Mia briefly, but she wasn't returning his embrace. "No," He said quietly even as he let her go and turned to walk away, "I'm really not." He had castrated a man for touching her, and even if it was bad enough he'd only thought it was worse in his mind. What else would he do, before his life was gone? Would he kill for such a reason? Probably. He'd done it before. Someone like him . . . Someone like him could not truly ever be called 'kind.'

"You are" Mia insisted and she tentatively reached to tug on his shirt softly. She didn't want him to walk away. Actually, she hadn't even wanted him unwrap the arms he had around her. It felt as if her heart was being squeezed and she couldn't wrap her head around that strange feeling. "Tome, you're kind to me" She repeated as she took a step forward and lightly pressed her forehead against his back "You'll always be kind in my eyes"

Tome stopped walking, surprised, when she grabbed onto his clothing, but didn't turn. He was intent on walking away again, until she pressed up against his back, her small hand still curled into his shirt, and his eyes widened slightly. His fingers curled into fists at his side. "Protecting one person does not make a person kind. . . I have learned to be cruel, or die."

Mia glanced at his clenched hands on his sides and just reached for one of them with her free hand. Was she invading his space? How did she even judge that? If he asked her to stop, she would. It was just that... That some side of her wanted to touch him. As soon as her hand brushed against his, she tried to ease the pressure he was applying by gently wrapping her fingers around his fist. "I know" Still it wouldn't change her point of view, nor she'd take back her words.

Tome's fingers curled briefly tighter beneath her hand, then slowly relaxed until he could move them slowly so as not to surprise or frighten her, to catch her fingers gently between his. ". . . Sometimes I wonder how you're still here," He whispered faintly, and it was true. He wondered how she could stand him, how he hadn't just shoved her away, how she hadn't run off or died with his Fawn. How she hadn't just left him alone to die. . . He would never have survived without her.

Mia rubbed her thumb gently and slowly against one of Tome's fingers when he spoke "Because I really like you" She replied and her voice was a faint whisper just as Tome's had been. Despite it all, she really do liked being by his side. If she was allowed to, she was really planning on staying by him as long as she could.

Tome's hand almost shook beneath hers, and the idea of it was near overwhelming. People didn't like Tome. They never did. He was either hated, tolerated, or dismissed. The only person that had ever just 'liked' him, had loved him even, was Fawn, and she was gone now. Was he even allowed to have two? Would his existence allow that to happen, or would he lose her as well? His fingers squeezed faintly around hers. "I don't understand why."

"Why not?" Mia replied and she stopped moving her thumb just to return Tome's squeeze, it was a soft squeeze though but firm as well. Sure, he was harsh but... Mia just liked him. He cared for her, worried about her and though he denied it, he was kind. "Being by your side makes me... Happy" She admitted out loud.

Tome kept his head down, thinking, considering. It was confusing. He wasn't good at these sorts of things - at turning thoughts and concepts and feelings into words. ". . . I have never made anyone happy." He said finally, shaking his head faintly. "I have inspired hatred and fear and disgust . . . but never happiness. . . I have always been fated to be alone."

Mia pursed her lips together at his statements and softly let go of his shirt, taking a step back. Still holding his hand with hers, she slowly stood in front of him and looked up at his lowered head "Tome, look at me" She said softly "Look at me and you'll see there's no such feelings you've just said" And it was true, her gaze was loaded with just pure tenderness "I'm here... Won't you allow me to stay by you instead of being alone?"

He didn't want to, but to glance up when she moved in front of him was instinctive, and he found himself looking at her. There were worlds of care in her eyes, and he'd seen that look before but never aimed at him, always at others. It made emotion swirl in his chest, a mix of too many things he couldn't identify and too strong to take, so he turned his head away and closed his eyes because he had never learned to sort through and handle those sorts of things. ". . . I have never liked being alone."

"It's okay. You won't have to" Mia tried to reassure him. Strange, she didn't know how to act in that kind of situation. Should she just say that and walk away? Why hadn't anybody taught her that? Her mother... Her mother would reassure Elliot by caressing his cheek, didn't she? You're pushing it A voice rang on her head but she had already raised her hand to his face. Shyly, she placed one of her hands on top of his cheeks and allowed it to hover there. He could always pull away if he wanted to. "I told you... I won't leave" She finally added. Am I doing this right? She thought to herself a bit worried as she started to pull away.

You don't have to be alone. Those words rang through his head, in a voice that wasn't hers and wasn't his and wasn't really anyone's, but had the burn of truth in them. He startled slightly when her hand touched him, eyes opening a crack, but only put his hand over hers and held it there, leaning his head into it. He didn't know what to do, so he just turned back to her again and tried holding her a second time, letting go of her hands to wrap his arms around her and hold her close to his chest where she was safe. He was doing his very best to keep from shaking, eyes squeezed shut tight. "Please don't go." It was as close to begging as he had ever been.

Mia had started to smile in relief when he put his hand over hers. Oddly enough, her heart skipped a beat and even her cheeks glowed with a light shade of pink. It was... It was... What was it? But even before she got the time to decipher the feeling or at least admit what it was to herself, his arms got wrapped around her and her face buried on his chest. Blinking, she raised her head a bit to look up at him. Her surprised gaze softened and with a gentle and slow movement she too wrapped her arms around him, leaning her cheek lightly against his chest "I won't. I promise I won't"

Tome nodded, but didn't release her, only staying that way for a while. He wasn't sure what else to do. He had her here at least, after it had seemed for a while as if he might lose her. ". . . We shouldn't go back for a few days." He said quietly after the long silence had passed and he'd mostly recomposed himself. "What were you looking for? We can go somewhere else to look."

Mia didn't try to pull away at any moment. The embrace was soothing itself and it felt nice. How long had it even been since she had been hugged anyway? When he spoke again, Mia just nodded at his statement while holding back a sigh. And then it had started like a nice day, now they couldn't go back that easily. At his question she tilted her head a little to the side, well yeah, that could be a possibility "It's called 'Licorice root'. I'm not sure where to find it though. But it is not really that important"

Tome thought about it a while and gave a small shrug. "I'm not sure i know what that is. But it's not far to the next town. We can look there if you'd like. It'll be a few days travel counting both directions." He wouldn't mind going out a while. Anywhere away from that man was fine with him.

Mia considered it for a moment before she finally nodded "Well yeah. Yeah that sounds good" It wouldn't be bad. Anyway, it was not like it was necessary, but she wouldn't mind going out. Mia couldn't help it but smile "I'd very much like that" She finally declared.
