Blood and Water (♠ Blue Suit ♠)

((Blech. XP I don't want to! I get anxiety having to be in a big place I've never been in, with absolutely no one I know, and this time I got dropped off but next time I'll probably have to drive myself, which means ill also have to be terrified of getting lost on the way there D: have to invest in a car charger so I can use my gps without draining my battery

It's a murder trial, which is terrifying also, but other than that I don't think I can legally tell you anything else

I gotta go eat and get ready to leave, so I'll reply later tonight or tomorrow, okay?))

((So sorry -_- I didn't know how to respond at first, so I put it off, and then I just let it keep getting away from me))

Tome was embarrassed at himself for asking, when she didn't respond right away, looking at him and then at his lap as if she was confused. But he sighed softly in relief when she finally answered, and couldn't help smiling a little. At least she wasn't irritated with him, or angry. He hadn't wanted to offend her by asking - basically - that they touch more than they already were. Was that forward? He wasn't sure he even knew what that meant anymore.

With her consent, Tome shifted and reached over to slip an arm beneath her legs, and the other behind her back, and lifted her carefully up and over into his lap. Joachim moved to accommodate them, and finally shifted around to rest his head on her legs, looking up at her with happy, adoring eyes.

Tome smiled a little, cradling her gently to him with an arm around her back still so she could lean on it if she wanted and not get uncomfortable. "You'll be warmer here." He said, softly, and rested his head against hers. "Goodnight, Mia."

(Oh my it's okay. It can happen, I assure you. If it gets difficult to reply just tell me! I guess I can change it a bit or do something to help ^^ If that makes any sense at all)

"Goodnight, Tome" Mia replied softly before she settled against him, closing her eyes in the process. She could've never dreamt of being able to sleep in his arms. It was nice. It was comfy and nice. A small smile spread across her face, and before she knew it she had already fallen asleep. She had very vague dreams, but most of them were crowded with images of her dad. She always saw three different men, who in the end merged together to be a single one. She saw the gentle, caring father he one was. She also saw the cold and distant father he had became. And then, it was also the actual him, the weak and sick one who had tried to choke her in his very own deathbed.

In the past, her father meant a lot to her. He was her hero, her prince charming, her beloved dad. He spent time with her, tucked her in at night, and willed her to sleep whenever she had a nightmare. She guessed that when he had left, she couldn't come up with an explanation. Her little, unexperienced 5 year old man couldn't accept it, and so she had simply not thought about it. As if her dad had never left or ever existed, she never spoke about him again. Never asked, because deep down she knew he was gone. But when her mother and Elliot died, his memory popped in her mind. Insistent, begging to be found. She thought his water wanted it too. But then she found him and everything crumbled down and was turn to ashes. She could've never hate someone like that if she had not loved him at first. He was the person he trusted the most and the one who had betrayed her at the end.

The first ray of light woke her up. With a noiseless groan, Mia opened her eyes without moving. Once she noticed she was still on Tome's arms, she smiled faintly "Are you awake?" A soft, nearby voice asked. Mia tilted her head to the side, just to find a pair of warm green eyes returning her gaze. "Hey ... What are you doing out here?" She asked her quietly. The little girl smiled a bit "I'm Josie, I know you. You came before. You and your boyfriend there" She said with a small smile while raising her small finger to point at Tome "He has funny ears" The little girl added while reaching for his ears. "Wait, Josie"

Tome locked his arms around Mia in a way that let him relax without letting her fall, her shoulder leaned into his chest. He listened and waited until both Joachim and Mia were asleep. Once his precious ones were comfortable and resting, he let himself sleep finally. He knew he would wake, should something happen, if Joachim didn't wake first. He dreamt of little, as was his usual, but there were fleeting images of Mia, and Joachim, and Malia. The few people that mattered to him at all. Fawn was there - dimly and in the background, but still there.

Tome usually rose with the sun, but it had been a long trip, and he hadn't slept well, worried about Mia and about

Joachim because it was the young dragon's first trip away from home. Firmly as he slept, he only began to stir when he heard Mia's voice, and the voice of a young girl. It reminded him of Fawn, and when small hands curled around the pointed tip of his ears, he remembered her, when she was very young and had let herself into his room before he woke. The memories of her, and the instincts not to hurt her, were the only things that kept him from lashing out at the solid - and somewhat painful - tug.

"Ah - hey -!" He grumbled, freeing a hand to reach up and carefully pull her hand away. He blinked his eyes slowly open and let her go, expression not quite so harsh as normal, softened for her because she was a child and she reminded him too much of his sister. ". . . They're real, you know. Pulling hurts."

Joachim stirred, yawning sleepily and smacking his 'lips' a few times as he immediately realized he was thirsty, like he did every morning. He went still, though, when he saw Josie, and tilted his head at her with a quizzical little rumble in his throat. He did like children, after all, and he'd seen her in the window before.

Josie gasped when Tome moved, but didn't do anything else. Mia looked up at Tome "Morning" She declared with a sort of apologetic look on her behalf. She turned her head back to the front, to look at Josie. The little girl had stepped back and her eyes were glued to her feet. Lips pursed together "It's okay, Josie. What should you say in these kind of situations?" Mia asked in a reassuring but gently demanding tone of voice. The little girl looked up slowly before her eyes met hers and then Tome's "I'm sorry" She said softly "I didn't mean to hurt" She looked at Tome for a few more seconds before her attention was completely stolen by Joachim. She hadn't really noticed his presence before.

“Oh! It’s you” She exclaimed with a big and wide smile spread across her face “The waving um … um” Josie struggled to find a word for a couple of seconds before she gave up “What is he?” This time she turned to Mia, tilting her head to the side a bit while doing so. The older female blinked in surprise. Although it wasn’t likely for Josie to have seen a dragon before, surely she had heard of them, or what they looked like. Joachim was a dragon from head to toe. “Well, Josie, he’s a dragon” Mia finally declared.

“A dragon!” Josie repeated, nodding. Her brow raised ever so slightly. “What’s a dragon?” There it was again, that sparkle of curiosity most of the kids had during that age, forever constant and present. “What is a-? You don’t know what a dragon is?” Mia inquired. The little girl shook her head quickly. Well now that was strange “Hasn’t your mother told you about them? Like in stories or something” Josie shook her head again “Mommy doesn’t like stories, she says they are stupid and are nothing but lies”

“Oh, but some of them are true. Does Joachim look like a lie to you?” Josie examined Joachim very closely, exaggerating quite a bit if she must add while doing so “He doesn’t” She finally concluded, sort of confused but giving out the feeling she felt proud about her observation skills “Are you a dragon too?” She quickly turned towards Tome, eyes expectant. Clearly, Tome was nothing like Joachim, but upon being told those ears were real, and being told some stories - which she had never been told about before - were real. Josie could only do so much as classify living beings between those who seemed like her family and neighbours, and those who had even the slightest thing that differentiated them both. Tome’s ears were something she had never seen before.

Tome nodded a little to accept her apology, but stayed quiet as she spoke to Mia because she was curious and interested. Full of life. It was almost strange, sometimes, seeing young girls around her age and thinking of how his sister had been just as excited, but had lacked the vitality. It wasn't fair, was it? Nothing had ever been fair to her, but he wanted to believe that she was somewhere better now, where she could run and be free as she had always wanted to. And maybe, just maybe, she could look down on him and smile.

When attention was brought back to him, Tome shook his head a little to clear it and gave Mia a confused sort of look. How sheltered were the people in this town? No wonder the children had looked at him with such nervous awe. He couldn't condone a parent that didn't tell their child stories - stories gave children dreams and adventures and fun. Was this girl's mother trying to keep her from knowing anything outside of this town? Tome wasn't sure what he would do if it was confirmed she was manipulating Josie.

"No," Tome said after a small pause, tone gently and lips quirking up just a bit in a small smile, "I'm not a dragon. Dragons are covered in scales and have wings and a tail. I'm part elf and part faerie." He paused, thinking she wouldn't know what those things even meant. "We're . . . like you, most ways. But . . . a little different." She could see that clearly, curious little thing she was. She'd already pulled on his ears, and she could plainly see his eyes, and the slightly inhuman tone of his skin.

Joachim wriggled a little and waited for Tome to get the hint and sit up with Mia on his own power. Once they wouldn't fall over, the dragon stretched like a big cat, wings stretching straight up into the air, and finally settled them back down against his back and sides with a little shake. Sitting up, Joachim shifted around a little to better face Josie and cooed happily at her, tail flicking a bit like a dog's along the grass.

Worried the dragon might scare her, Tome set Mia carefully down and got to his feet to stand next to him, rubbing his scaley head and giving him a nuzzle. "Good morning, little one." He murmured quietly to the dragon, smiling a bit when Joachim pushed his big head into Tome's chest. "Happy to be outside again?" He knew Joachim had gotten tired of being cooped up in the wagon.

(Oh, my God, this almost got tossed to the Inactive. I'm so sorry! I really had replied, I think it didn't go through. But I really did. I'm really sorry Nala :c Because life got a bit complicated I didn't think on checking if it hadn't. I should have looked earlier, again sorry >.<)

Josie watched Tome carefully, before she finally nodded, quite slowly so. He was different, that much she could tell. Somewhere inside her she heard her mother's voice telling her that anything else that was 'different', and therefore 'not human' could bring nothing good. The little girl had grown up with those very words almost everyday. Those words which were approved and agreed by her older sister and father.

Her mind, being as easily influenceable as a child usually was told her it was wrong to be speaking with them. But she was a good girl at heart, her temperament didn't allow her to hate the man nor the creature, because they felt nice enough and not scary at all. There was also the woman, who felt just so very familiar to Josie, she reminded her of her dad a lot. Kaylee didn't like didn't like her, but Josie didn't quite understand why.

"Not a dragon then" She repeated to herself. Her gaze swivelled back to Mia, her head tilting a bit to the side "You are like me?" She asked. She did look like any other person she had ever seen. The older girl nodded "Just like you" She replied with a smile. Josie nodded again. Then all three of them were ... different. The younger girl watched Joachim a bit tentatively now, but she couldn't say she was really afraid of him. When both Mia and Tome stood up, she remained silent for a moment. There were some conflicting thoughts going through her young mind.

"If you are ... um ... different. Aren't you afraid of each other?" She finally dared to ask. Her mother - and whatever her mother told them was always right - had told her that people who were different couldn't be around one another. However, the woman looked at both the man at the creature with care and tenderness, no dread on her gaze.

Mia's brow arched before she replied "No, being different is not scary, Josie" She stated. Josie scowled a bit. She wasn't scared either, but that couldn't be normal "But Mommy tells us ... " She trailed off while her fingers clutched the hem of her dress softly while her eyes lowered to the ground. Mia's gaze darkened a bit, understanding sinking in. She took a step towards her little sister, and kneeled down in front of her. "Josie" She called her, and her voice came out as patient and soothing. The little girl slowly looked up "Are you afraid of them?" Mia asked softly. Josie looked past Mia and up at Tome and Joachim, before she finally shook her head. "They are different, but being different is not a bad thing. Your Mommy she ... " Mia paused before continuing "She's just yet to understand that" Mia tried to choose her words carefully so as not to upset Josie.

(( it's okay :) I understand how that happens completely. And you came back with like two days to spare lol Cuttin it close, are we?))

Tome couldn't say he was quite bad with children. He just . . . tended to scare them, and so usually kept silent, which generally only made them more wary of him. But this girl was important, he could see that clearly, and he wasn't allowed to just try and ignore her like he usually did. She had an inquisitive mind, and a good but confused heart, brought up in ways that were wrong but normal in this place. Tome was used to being treated this way. He just hated to see someone so young being denied so much of the world when not all of it was so bad as people thought. Perhaps it was just his personal bias. Fawn could never have seen all the things she wanted to so badly, and all the people that could failed to see the good she had always seen. It made him angry if use thought of it too hard.

"How could I be afraid of her?" Tome said softly, and when he looked at Mia his eyes were gentle and maybe a little but adoring. "I love her." He had never truly thought he would say it to someone that wasn't Mia, but this little girl reminded him just a bit of her, and just a bit of Fawn, and he couldn't see any harm in letting her know if it would make her less nervous, or less confused about their being together.

Tome had curled an arm around beneath Joachim's chin, where the dragon was letting his big head rest in the crook of the half breed's arm. The young dragon lifted his head, feeling left out, and licked a sloppy trail up the side of Tome's face, looking decidedly happy with himself when Tome made a disgusted sound and tried to wipe it away on his arm, pushing Joachim's big head away with a smile playing at his lips. "All right, I love you, too - I said no licking!"

Joachim gave a full body wiggle, making a happy dragon face and huffing in the way he liked to laugh, pleased with himself. He flopped down onto his belly, then, and crawled forward to lay next to Mia with his head very close to

Josie's feet. Looking up at the little girl, Joachim wriggled a little again, and gave her ankle a little lick before shrinking back again, tail swishing playfully behind him because he was breaking a rule but also wanted to make friends with her. Licking had made Tome smile, so it made sense to his baby dragon brain that it would make Josie smile again.
