I didn't think Avery looked THAT old in my face claim lol. Maybe it's the eyes... The character design doesn't have the wide-eyed anime look.

I think it just boils down to character design really. Look at Roland.
To me he looks almost 15-16 in appearance. The eyes being wider, and the face shape being rounded give a more youthful appearance.
Avery has a longer, more angular face structure, narrow eyes, etc.

I think it's the eyes; I think in anime and manga, wider and bigger eyes convey a sense of innocence whereas smaller, narrower eyes portray a cynical, pessimistic outlook on life.

He's from a horror game, even though it was developed by a Japanese studio he wasn't made in the anime art style.
