Futuristic ARK: Survival of the Fittest (Closed)

Jack nodded, "You got a saddle?", He opened his engrams to see if they could slap something together, and found "Mammoth Saddle" was not a recipe they had or could unlock at the moment. "Well, shit."

"I.. dont know," Roan hummed, "We can probably make reigns by hand."

"Good idea," Jack nodded, "I made some cords to tie up Lil' Chicken when she attacked me and Vera." He checked his pockets, "It'll take time, though, turning fiber into cords sucks." He looked around, "Or we could use strips of hide."

Jack nodded and started laying out hide to cut into strips and tie into a long cord they could use to control the mammoth. It took a while with the two of them working on it, well past midday before they got to attach the cord to the base of the mammoth's tusks and loop around the back. It definitely wasn't comfortable up on the mammoth's back, but it was high up.

They quickly ran into an issue, however. The mammoth was simply too massive to fit through the wooden dinosaur gate. "Well, that ain't good."

"We need a bigger gate.." Roan commented, "Have any engrams available for one?"

"Maybe," Jack looked through his engrams, "if there is, I can't unlock it yet." He could see more gate structures he hadn't unlocked, but he couldn't see their sizes. "We might have to improvise."

"We could do that," Jack started, looking at the dinosaur gate they had, "Or I can try and take a chunk out of a couple gates and connect them, that should be big enough the mammoth can fit through. It'll be ugly but it should work if it's possible." Busting a hole in the wall would probably be a more viable option in the short term, though.

"We wouldn't have to tear it back down later though," Roan pointed out, "A hole is just easier."

"For now, yeah," Jack nodded. He hadn't properly communicated his idea to Roan if he thought the structure would be one-use only, Jack needed to work on his communication skills. "Alright, I'll bust a hole in the wall, you get the mammoth ready to go." Jack went up to the walls and started dissassembling an area big enough for the mammoth to pass.

Roan climbed onto the mammoth, nudging it to walk through the hole in the wall, "Perfect size!"

"Great!", Jack called, then muttered, "Because we're wide the fuck open with this hole." He shook his head, hopefully they'd be able to gather the materials to repair the whole in the wall before night fell and something decided to poke the vulnerability.

Roan continued to move the beast before calling back, "Hey, these things were able to take on a bunch of predators, maybe it can guard the hole."

"Roan, you know me," Jack called, "I'll figure something out, I don't like holes in the wall!"

"I know but like.." Roan started, "The sun is already going down. So if you can't rebuild it in time.. it might be a good idea."

"Last resort," Jack shook his head, "I'll keep it in mind." Outside the wall was considerable free space, on account of the deforestation done to build the wall. There was still a lot of forest left, just not as much as there had been a day prior. "See how he gathers wood!"

"On it," Roan called, going out and tearing down a few trees. There was a just bit of wood in the inventory once he had broken down several trees, "Wow."

"What's the verdict?" Jack ran over to check the mammoth's inventory. Attacking wood with the tusks yielded much thatch, but not nearly as much wood. "Oh." Jack thought for a moment. Every dino they tamed so far had a secondary ability. The parasaurs could detect enemies, the raptors could jump over a one and a half high wall with ease, and the spino could rise on its hind legs to become more nimble but slower. "See if you can figure out its secondary ability, maybe that's the wood one?"

"Hopefully, or this was a waste of three hours," Roan replied.

The mammoth's secondary ability seemed to be rising up on its hind legs briefly and then crashing back down. This attack yielded the reverse of the tusks, a lot more wood and not a lot of thatch. "There we go!" Jack whooped, "This wasn't a waste after all!"

"Riding it when it does that is terrifying!" Roan yelled as he cringed to the beast, "I think im going to have a heart attack."

They'd definitely need a proper saddle for the mammoth if they were going to do that a lot. "How about we switch, then?" Jack called.

Roan nodded, scrambling off the mammoth, "Never again. You want wood, don't ask me to get on that thing."

Jack laughed as he started climbing, "If I wand wood, I think we're just about covered." He flicked the reins to get the beast going. It didn't take long for Jack to see exactly why it terrified Roan so much, without a real saddle, or anything at all, to hold you, you were basically at the mercy of whatever fur you could clutch with your knees to stay on the mammoth's back. "I hope we get a saddle engram soon."
