At the sound of his leader's voice, Blackfire climbed onto his paws and stretched out his hindlegs. He stifled a yawn, tired from having woken up in the middle of the night. He hadn't been able to fall back asleep and, as such, had spent the night standing guard by the entrance to camp, just in case somebody came in. After all, doing something was better than nothing, and at least he could say he was helping the clan.
Goldenpaw, though awake, had been lying in her nest, trying to get in a few more moments of rest before she had to get up. When she heard Silentstar's call, however, she pulled herself up onto her feet. Still a little still with sleep, she shook her pelt out, hoping to free any moss stuck in her pelt. She didn't wanna take the time to clean it out herself and be late to answer her leader's call. Once she was satisfied that she'd gotten out what she could, she left her den and padded into the common area of the camp.
Willowfrost was an early riser. She hadn't been before kits, but now that she had a responsibility, and that responsibility seemed to always want to be up and playing before sunrise, she was up before sunrise too, though always a bit irritable in the mornings. Her tail flicked in annoyance as Honeykit kept into her side, her paw placed gently but firmly on Vividkit's back to keep her pinned as the queen's rough tongue worked in-between her ears.
Honeykit was a very energetic kit. She was always the first awake, though quick to wake up her siblings as well. She was a constant ball of energy when she wasn't sleeping. She jumped at her mother, sliding down the queen's side as she'd failed to climb onto her back. Her ears perked as Silentstar called for a meeting, and she bounced right over despite her mother's call to stay back. She was excited to be a warrior someday, and asked almost constantly to go out on patrols with the warriors, though she'd never been allowed to, she was a kit after all. She stared up at her leader with big, bright, hopeful eyes. "Please can I go on patrol today? I can go for Blackfire! I'm not tired!"
Honeykit loved doing important tasks for her leader. "Okay!" She said excitedly, racing off towards the infirmary. "Dawnfrost!" She called out on the way, little paws thumping against the ground as she ran as quickly as she could.
Willowfrost attempted to keep Vividkit in her grasp as long as she could, but eventually let her go with a huff. "Alright, you can go. But you have to listen to what Dawnfrost says, don't run off." She said with a final lick to her daughter's side. Maybe while they were gone she could get more rest, silently hoping that Finchkit was still asleep in the nursery as she headed inside.
Blackfire blinked a hint of sleep out of his eyes and offered his leader a small grin and a flick of the ear. "I'll be fine for patrol, I can rest after," he assured him. "Haven't been up long enough to be worn out all the way yet." To prove his point to both himself and his leader, he held in the hint of a yawn that lingered in the back of his throat, managing the most calm and alert face he could manage.
Finchkit awoke with the commotion, hearing the distant sounds of his sisters racing off into the medicine den. Had he been a little more awake, or a little more interested in herbs, he might have joined them. However, between the warmth of his nest and his already solid determination to be a warrior one day, he was content to curl deeper into the moss and close his eyes. He could help his siblings in the medicine den whenever he woke up, he reasoned to himself, but he very well couldn't crawl back into his nest in the middle of the day.
beetlepaw's ears flickered as the morning song of stirring cats flitted through the entrance of the infirmary and charmed the young tomcat like a snake out of his sleep. groggily, he lifted his head off his white paws and blinked open round golden eyes, watching the world fall into place around him. the room still seemed to be caught in the night's obstinate grasp, the thick, hanging shadows pierced only by a few sparse swords of sunlight. the battle may seem to lean in the night's favor now, but beetlepaw knew it would only be a short matter of time before the sun assumed victory, and the day was undeniably upon the clan. he parted his maw slightly, drawing in a deep breath. the air was crisp and somewhat chilled, weighed down by a thick perfume of diverse, herbal aromas; even though he was still rather fresh into his training, he could start to name some specific scents floating in the mix. he smiled discreetly, a flicker of pride and excitement born at the thought. it never got old, this daily reminder of where he was, and who he was training to become. staggering to his feet, the apprentice unfurled his stocky body in a long, luxurious stretch, dislodging whatever lingering drowsiness still clung to his physique, and flicked it off in a brisk shake. he then sat back in his nest and began to groom his soft dark brown tabby-and-white pelt, smoothening the sleep-ruffled hairs under his tongue to prepare himself for the day. just as he was wrapping up, fussing over the final details of his whiskers, beetlepaw's ears twitched again at the sound of approaching paw-steps. he twisted around, catching sight of a small frame bumbling towards the infirmary and calling out his mentor, dawnfrost's, name. another smile warmed onto his face as he recognized honeykit. i should say hi, he thought, though an instinctive doubt struck him. she's looking for dawnfrost, though; maybe she doesn't want to talk to me.the young tom quickly shook his head to shake the second thought. it couldn't nearly be that serious, he had to tell himself. plus, kits weren't nearly as judgmental as others- he was sure honeykit wouldn't mind chatting! before he could convince himself otherwise, the dark brown tabby tom rose to his paws and faced the entrance, mewing, "good morning, honeykit!"
cicadasong's eyes cracked open to reveal rich amber slivers as her leader's voice sliced through her mind, cutting her away from her slumber. the warrior lifted her head, jaws parting in surrender to a wide yawn that sent a shudder through her lithe frame and wholly woke her senses. she pulled herself onto her paws, tracing her gaze over her body, only to release a puff of frustration. tangled again, she mused silently. the molly twisted about herself as she began to groom her coat, raking her tongue through bundles of mottled silver-cream-and-white fur that had spun overnight. as much as she appreciated her semi-long fur during the winter, she despised how much upkeep it required just to maintain a presentable quality, especially after sleeping (though, she had yet to determine if it was truly her fur's length to blame, or her habit to move around during sleep). once she had achieved a level suited for presentation, cicadasong pushed up on her paws and proceeded towards the area where her clan-mates were beginning to accumulate. as she approached, her head swiveled to find silentstar and blackfire standing close together in conversation, and she wondered what duty she would be assigned this morning.
newtfang had just awoken when silentstar's yowl rang out. quickly, the warrior gathered his paws beneath him and slinked forth from the sleeping quarters and onwards to the main area. his blue-green eyes scanned the scene briefly as he settled amidst his clan-mates, using one paw to straighten his whiskers and pass the time. his dark grey coat was short and neatly hugged his lean, compact physique, making it rare that the tom needed to spend time over intensive grooming. as he patiently awaited instruction, newtfang stretched his limbs and gave a few yawns, swiping his tongue over his maw after the last and tracing the unusually longer fangs that poked out from below his upper lip.
Honeykit paused where she stood and perked up when she heard Beetlepaw's voice. She rushed over to him, eyes glowing with excitement. "Hi, Beetlepaw! Silentstar said it's my job to go with you and Dawnfrost to collect herbs! Probably to protect you guys, since you're not warriors." She said, tilting her head a bit. Honeykit visited the infirmary often, she was pretty good friends with Beetlepaw.
Willowfrost climbed into the nest beside Finchkit, purring softly as she curled around her son. With a gentle lick to the top of his head, she laid her own head down and began to fall asleep. Her breathing slowed, feeling confident in the medicine cat's ability to keep track of her two kits while they were out collecting herbs. They were well behaved, anyway.
Twigkit had rolled around the nest as he slowly started to awaken; his eyes flickering slightly in his sleep, his soft pink nose twitched as well. Twigkit was normally a heavy sleeper, sleeping was definitely one of the things he enjoyed most doing— as well as sunbathing.
He finally managed to wake himself up fully, his eyes blinked as he looked around before slowly coming to a sit. He sat confidently as he rotated his shoulder blades. He peeked over at his mother Willowfrost, as well as looking at his brother. He stood up and his tail swayed, he carefully tried to trot his way past his resting mother and brother. He raised his head high as the cold filled his nostrils; the cold sending a chill through his fur. He shook out his dark brown pelt and his green eyes searched around eagerly to see what he could get into.
beetlepaw purred amusedly at honeykit's enthusiasm. he didn't know why he always grew so nervous preceding moments like these- honeykit always engaged with him, whenever she made one of her frequent visits to the infirmary. "did he now?" the apprentice mused, ears perking and eyes widening with good-natured faux shock. "that's quite a responsibility he's entrusting you with. but, i know it's fallen into good paws." he flashed a warm smile at the end of his statement, before casting a glance around the infirmary, ears twitching curiously. "we'll have to wait for dawnfrost to get ready, but in the meantime, would you like to help me check our herb stores to see which ones need restocking?"
Honeykit bounced in excitement, already headed towards where the herb stock was. She knew the infirmary well, her frequent visits allowed that, though they could sometimes be irritating to the medicine cat and apprentice. She'd visited a couple of times while they were busy with wounded warriors, but the infirmary was one of the only places she was allowed to go without her mother's eyes on her, she trusted the two who stayed in the infirmary. "Yeah! I'll help! Bet I can name more herbs than you!" She teased. She couldn't, she barely knew a couple, and those were only from when she went to help collect them.
Willowfrost's ear twitched as her son removed himself from the nest. She was an excellent mother, and especially from coming in from the streets, she had an impeccable sense of knowing when her kits left her side, especially when she slept. So as Twigkit left the nest, her head lifted and she watched him leave the nursery. She gently pulled herself from Finchkit's side and followed Twigkit out. As he stood there, she came up behind him and used a paw to gently pin him down. It seemed he was doomed the same fate as his sisters, unable to get out of morning bathing. She laid behind him and began between his ears, purring softly.
As his mother and brother got up and left the nest, Finchkit took a moment to climb out himself and stretch. He'd been half-awake since his sisters had ran out, and now that everybody else was leaving, he decided it was time for him the follow. Trying to blink the remaining sleep from his eyes, he slipped out of the nursery. He could see his mother grabbing Twigkit for morning bathing and, in an attempt to avoid the same fate, crept along the wall to stay out of her sight until he was close enough to the medicine cat den to make a break for it. After half a minute of sneaking, he knew he was close enough to run, he just had to make sure he wasn't seen.
Unfortunately for Finchkit, as Willowfrost left the nursery she heard the rustling of the nest behind her as her son stood and followed out. She knew he was awake and leaving, but let him sneak off just a little bit. Her ear twitched as she heard him stalk off, and once she deemed him far enough she turned her head to look at him. "Finchkit, stay close to me. Don't think you're getting out of this, you look like a mess. Come back over here and wait until Twigkit is finished."
Finchkit sighed, deflating where he stood and hanging his head, embarrassed at having been caught. He took a moment to wallow in shame where he stood before trudging over to Willowfrost. "Yes, mom," he said, sighing. Defeated, he settled down at her side and waited for her to finish grooming Twigkit, knowing that he was fated to be next despite his best attempts to escape to the medicine cat den after his sisters.
