Tombstone
That Damned Cowboy
Holliday waved away the food when it was presented to him. “Thank you,” he said, “but no.” Accepting the food would mean that he had a moral obligation to stay with the group. On top of that he would have to share his own supplies down the road as a result. He’d rather just eat the gruel he was used to preparing over his campfire, a campfire that he had neglected for to long by now. He needed to get back to it and put a log on in order to keep it going. “I appreciate the gesture and all but I have my own supplies, it wouldn’t be right for me to take yours. Now I need to go attend to the fire.”
Holliday walked back over to his makes shift campsite and tossed a log on the fire. Then he unstrapped his tactical holster and re-equipped his leather cowboy holsters, as they what he favored most. He turned around and thought about heading back towards the girls when he saw a flash about 200 yards away on the edge of the mills fencing. Holliday instantly knew it was the glint of the suns light flashing off a scope. “TAKE COVER!!!” He screamed towards the girls, but it was too late. The blast from the high powered round echoed over the compound. Skylynn lurched and then fell to the ground. “NOOOO!” he yelled as he ducked behind his truck, using as cover though they were still taking pot shots at the girls. This was his chance.
He threw opened the driver’s side door and retrieved his Winchester rifle. Quickly he depressed the loading gate and the currently loaded rounds flew out. They were too weak to be of use at this range. In the drivers side door however he kept a red box filled with specialty rounds that were designed for big game hunting and he thumbed one after another. It took too long, he could only hope the Tammy and Miyuki were still ok.
Holliday popped his head out from behind his makeshift foxhole only to feel a rush of a bullet as it whizzed by him. This wouldn’t deter him however. Holliday raised his rifle and aimed at his attackers positions. With only iron sights and relatively week rounds, the chances of him making a kill were slim. Still he had the skill, and with just a little luck he might succeed.
For every shot the enemy fired, Holliday replied with two. He wasn’t having much luck making any hits, but he did keep the snipers suppressed, which was throwing off their aim. Finally as he was close to empty he heard a loud yell, and a man rose out bushes clutching his breast. Holliday took another shot putting the man down. He thought he heard another yell, “He killed the commander, what should we do.” Holliday used this moment to quickly reload a few extra rounds, and when he raised his rifle he saw four men retreat. “Damn!” he cursed. There was no way in hell he was going to let them get away.
He hopped in his truck and threw the key into the ignition. Then he gassed it and swung by the girls. Holliday faltered for a moment when he saw Skylynn laying face down dead. He looked straight at Miyuki, “This place isn’t safe anymore! You need to get everybody out within the next half hour. Even if those bastards don’t come back with friends, this place will be crawling with zeds. Take care of Skylynn, I’m going to make those fuckers pay.”
Holliday gunned it and drove straight through the gate. As he passed the spot where the snipers had nested he saw deep marks in the mud from where their vehicles had tore off in a hurry. Holliday swore, this only made his job harder. The good news was however was it looked like they tried to take on the blocked routes that he had attempted to take many days earlier.
After 20 minutes of driving, Holliday heard gunshots and slowed to a stop. He pulled his vehicle to the side of the road and exited it slowly, as not to make a sound. The gunfire must have meant they ran into some cursers, so he didn’t want to draw them in with his truck. Instead of his rifle Holliday opted to bring his double barrel shotgun instead. It would make a mess of them once he got in close as he had planned.
Holliday worked his through the back alleys following the occasional gunshot. Eventually he came to where they had abandoned their car, and found some 9mm ammo on the ground. Now he knew what too look for and increased his pace for a gallop. The gunfire had stopped for the time being. As he was about to cross a street he saw the men he was looking for just a block away. He watched them as they took shelter in a building, a Pizza Hut. Once they entered, Holliday dashed towards it. Not wanting to be seen through the windows, he worked his way around to the back.
When he got there a man stepped out the back door, with a knife in his hand. He wore a faded t-shirt with a picture of the cast of Bob’s burgers. His face was that of terror when he saw Holliday standing just a few feet away, grinning sadistically. The man dropped the knife and fumbled for a small pistol, which he had stuffed in his pants belt. Holliday just uttered the words, “Hello Bob!” and pulled the trigger to the scattergun and ripped apart Bobs gut with buckshot.
Someone inside heard the commotion and was running towards the door, but he was not the only one. Holliday high tailed it to the front of the building as he heard the moans of at least 10 incoming zeds. He should have been fast enough to avoid the herd seeing him, but the guard’s re-enforcement wasn’t so lucky. He heard the sounds of gunfire followed only by his screaming as he was torn apart.
It was then Holliday saw the remaining two men burst from the front exit, followed by a few zeds. Holliday popped one round of the scattergun closest man’s leg. It folded in half and he fell onto the asphalt. Several zeds dropped down on him and finished him off. One however made a B-line towards Holliday. He blasted this zed with the remaining round and it crumpled.
Holliday kept running after the final man, dodging zombies left and right. He was beginning to get very winded, but he heard a yell. After rounding a corner, Holliday saw that the man had twisted his ankle and fallen. A pistol was only a few feet out of reach. Not having time to reload the shotgun, he let it fall and instead reached for the revolver in his holster. The final man, who was really just a boy a year or two Holliday’s senior also made a reach for his gun. Adrenaline coursed through each person’s veins and time slowed. As the kid’s hand touched the gun, a bullet ripped through his fingers. Then a second one went through the elbow of his opposite arm, then his knee. Holliday slammed the gun back down into the holster and then took out the knife that he had stored in his boot. The kid watched helplessly as Holliday approached and put sunk the knife into a wound and twisted. “Alright boy, I want answers. Now! Where are you from! How many of there are you! What supplies do you have! Why did you attack us! Why did you kill my friend!”
The boy just gasped for a moment and Holliday twisted the knife more. “The Hospital!” He yelled, “We came from the Hospital. Im the last of the raiding party. There were about 26 of us before we met you, and 33 before we took it. We exhausted most of our resources clearing that place and became desperate for more. We thought, and still do think that it is going to pay off in the long run, but we needed more supplies. We scouted you out earlier in the day when you came off of the old highway. The leader of our scout group ordered us to attempt a raid a s you didn’t look that well armed. He’s the one who took the shot and killed your friend.”
“Thank you,” Holliday said as he twisted the knife some more. “But you’re telling me that the Hospital is completely clear save for 20 men, who are low on supplies.”
“Y-yes”
“Ammunition and weaponry, as well?”
“We had assuault weapons, but there is only enough ammo for one now. As far as other weapons the raiding party had a quarter of what was left on us.”
“Mm-hmm,” Holliday said interested and what of the meds inside it, still mostly untouched.”
“We’ve barely begun to start consolidating the meds that were left in the initial raiding. I couldn’t tell you what’s on hand though, but there is a lot.” The kid was now quivering, blood loss finally getting to him. Behind the two of them, Holliday heard the murmuring of approaching zeds. He withdrew his knife from the boy and stood up to leave. After picking up not only his shot gun, but the kid’s pistol as well, he heard the boy yell “Please, don’t let them get me.”
Holliday sighed and shook his head. “You may be just a dumb kid, but you’re older than me. That woman whom you and your buddies killed had just given birth less than a week ago. That baby will grow up without any family in this world. I have no sympathy for you, and if I had the time I cause you much more pain.” With that, Holliday turned and left. Behind him the kid screamed, as he became a happy meal.
After what seemed like forever, Holliday reached his truck. He reached for the door handle, but noticed his hands were covered in blood. In an attempt to clean it off, hew brushed his hands on his pants. Then he entered the vehicle and sat down for a moment not knowing what his next move should be. They would probably already have evacuated by now, but he had to find them. Though Skylynn was now dead, this horrible incident led to some decent news. The hospital was now a viable option for retrieving meds for Jennifer, and a large amount at that. Holliday just started diving, hoping that he may eventually run into them by sheer luck. After a while he just pulled over, and closed his eyes to take a nap. He needed his sleep, even though it would be plagued by nightmares of the actions he had just taken.
