Realistic or Modern We'll Get Through This Together

Cassie felt the slight movement of Aspen looking towards Nico, and she looked over at her too. Thoughts rushed to her, and even if they were in a cluttered mess, she let go of Aspen immediately, and looked away. Through tear filled eyes she could see stretchers being pulled out of the building, and saw the others. Her heart clenched at the sight of them and she stood up quickly trying to go over to them, but the fire fighter stopped her. "Let go of me! Their my family! Let go!" She struggled against the fire fighter, and pushed past watching them being loaded into the ambulance. Her face paled seeing how injured they were and she turned towards Aspen wide eyed. She started walking back to him then glanced over at Nico. In a numb voice she said, "We need to go get her. Then we're going to the hospital." She didn't know if the authorities had been contacted about finding the missing orphans. If they hadn't yet, they probably will be once they identify Tommy, Issac, and Vinaya at the hospital. Cassie didn't care anymore. Her friends could die, and the orphanage was the least of her worries. She started walking to Nico, uncaring if she looked like The Walking Dead.

He felt the ground crunch, and slipped a little. He looked down and saw the kid, "Oh Christ." He knelt down and called over. The fire was mostly out, but the building was still weak.

"I found one!" They dug Issac out and carried him to a stretcher.

When Cassie said they were family, the paramedic knew who they were. "Hey, let them go with this one, they're siblings." There was a seat next to Tommy who was unconscious in the back of the ambulance. The paramedic sat next to him and hooked up the EKG and started an IV on Tommy.

"You're the orphans right? I though I recognized him, then it clicked ."

Aspen followed Cassie, the image of her desperate, pained eyes seared into his mind. He hadn't understood why she'd let go of him so suddenly, but decided that it was probably because of the stretchers that had been brought out of the building. He'd eyed the stretchers, trying to get a glimpse of their friends, but couldn't tell if they were alive or dead. No one seemed to be moving, and the pain in his chest was almost unbearable. But he kept calm on the outside, since the usual leaders weren't around, he would step in for now, until they got better.

Cassie stopped dead short before she got to Nico, and turned around to face the paramedic. Her face was pale, and she shook her head, "No... We're not the orphans..." She lied. Cassie glanced at Aspen, then at Nico, and she wished Nico would come over. She looked back at the paramedic, and then her eyes shifted to Tommy. She couldn't look at him long and turned away eyes watering. She was thinking for a moment, then saw one more stretcher coming out and saw Issac. She felt dizzy, all of them were in such bad shape. She gulped and looked at the ground then at the paramedic.

Issac had slipped into unconciousness now, his body to deprived of oxygen to even maintain that. He was covered in blood, and had several first and second degree burns all over his body. His leg was broken, crushed by the falling wall, and he was too covered in ash, dust, blood and burns to be recognized in his current state. To add insult to literal injury, several shards of falling glass had imbedded themselves in his skin, several medium ones in his chest, around a dozen small ones in his right arm, and a medium one right above his eye. He wasn't even aware that he had been picked up, as he was too far gone.

Nicolette kept her eyes on the ground even though she heard footsteps approach her. Tears kept falling from her eyes as she let out a shaky breath. Keeping her hair out of her face, she took a deep breath as she finally calmed down for the moment.

Instead of lying to the paramedic about being the orphans, Aspen chose to ignore them since he doubted that they'd believe them. He paused as Cassie lied, glancing back over his shoulder. He didn't think that she'd bother trying to hide it anymore, since they'd already called their bluff. But maybe he was just giving up to easily because of his grief. He paused just behind Nico, unsure of what to do or say. Finally, he spoke up. "Hey," he said gently. "You alright?"

"Does it truly matter?" Nico asked calmly. She wasn't in the mood to sound harsh or be mean in any way. Out of force of habit from grabbing the necklace her mother had given her that had gotten thrown away, she gripped the guitar pick necklace tightly.

Aspen hesitated, biting his lip. He knew everything that had happened had been hard on everyone, so he didn't blame her for how she felt. He began to turn away to head back towards Cassie, but just as he began the short walk over he said softly, "It matters to me."

Nicolette froze momentarily before regaining her composure. "I just lost the only thing of my mom I had left. No I'm not alright," she said softly as she laid her chin on her knees. Tears started sliding down her cheeks, one of them being bruised from the fall, and she quickly attempted to wipe them away before starting to sob uncontrollably.

"I know. And I'm sorry. If I had been around, I would have tried to get everyone out sooner, and save some of our belongings." He said, letting some of the guilt he felt from not being around when he others need him show. He sat next to Nico, and stayed there in silence, unsure of whether she wanted him there or not, or what he should say. Instead, he opted to reach out and ever so slightly brush his fingertips against her hand, letting her cry. It briefly crossed his mind that there were more crying females in one day than he'd ever encounter before, but the thought disappeared nearly as fast as it came.

"Shutup," Nico said as she shot him a glare. The glare quickly turned to sadness as she looked back down. "It's not your fault," she whispered, barely managing to keep a steady voice. She glanced back at him and sighed softly. "Sorry," she said as she tried to avoid the tears threatening to fall.

He opened his eyes slowly and looked at the man in blue.

"Don't worry buddy, you and your friends are safe."

"Friends? Who. Who am I? I hurt, I'm hot, and I'm uncomfortable. He is helping me."

"Who am I?"

The paramedic frowned a little, "don't worry kid, you're on your way to a hospital."

"Issac, who is that? I know the name. Is it me? It must be, I must be Issac... Who is Cassie... Sister? Friend? Vinaya. Lover? Yes. There are others, Kira, Aspen, Tommy. They are my friends."

Tommy, who was sure he was Issac looked at the paramedic, "I'm Issac."

Cassie watched the scene between Tommy and the paramedic. When he first opened his eyes her heart nearly jumped out of her chest until she heard his question. Again, the sinking feeling was back, and she looked at the paramedic with wide eyes. When Tommy said he was Issac, Cassie nearly burst out crying then quickly jumped onto the ambulance and looked at Tommy, "Tommy? It's me Cassie. Do you remember me? Do you?" She wanted to shake him, and scream, and throw a tantrum just to hear his say "Yes, Cassie, of course I remember you. How could I forget you?" Or something like that, but she held her composure. She nervously reached for his hand and looked him in the eye, hoping to see any sort of recognition flash in his eyes.

The paramedics placed Issac's stretcher next to Tommy's in the ambulance. One paramedic closed the ambulance doors behind him, and the other tied the stretcher down so it wouldn't fly around if something happened to the ambulance. One of the paramedics began sorting through things that they had that might be able to help Issac. The best the paramedic figured he could do was clean him up for now, to keep anything from becoming infected. He got a wet rag, and began wiping Issac's face, making him recognizableish. The paramedic looked over at Cassie, about to ask her if she recognized the injured boy, but saw her with Tommy, and decided that he would later.

Aspen drew away quickly, her anger made it obvious enough that she didn't want him there, he decided. "Sorry," he whispered, standing up. He took two spets towards Cassie and the others before stopping to look back at Nico. But he continued the short walk to where Cassie had just been. He looked around and spotting her in the ambulance with Issac and Tommy, followed her. Noticing how she leaned over Tommy and held his hand, he knew something was up. A pit formed in his stomach as he asked, "What's happening?"

Vinaya's stretcher went into the next ambulance, since the first was too crowded with Tommy, Isaac, and Carrie. While the paramedics got her situated, Vinaya didn't wake, or show any signs of even coming close. Aside from her struggling breathing, which was being assisted by an oxygen mask over her face, there was little to suggest that Vinaya might wake again - but, really, she wasn't dead yet.

((I'm off to bed; since Vinaya won't be waking any time soon, you all can feel free to move her to wherever is convenient while I'm gone. Night!))

Cassie didn't look away from Tommy, but answered Aspen,, tears welling up in her eyes again. "He doesn't even remember who he is... He called himself Issac..." She whispered, choking up. She waited a little longer for any recognition from Tommy, then released his hand and turned away defeated. She looked at Aspen gravely for a moment then looked over at Issac. "Oh, Issac..." She buried her face in her hands not able to look anymore. She could only imagine what Vinaya looked like. She had caught a glimpse of her, and she didn't look too pretty either. This was going to be really bad...

The paramedic nodded, "He'll be alright," he assured Cassie. "Most cases of memory loss are temporary anyways. He'll remember who he is and who you are shortly." The paramedic said, smiling softly. He cleaned some more off Issac, clearing the ash and dust from his wounds. "Love can overpower any obstacle," the paramedic said, attempting to connect the dots with Cassie and Tommy.

Cassie had felt slightly reassured when the other paramedic said Tommy would remember, and hoped he was right. She blinked when he said his last thing and looked away. "Oh.. It's not.. We're not... No." She shook her head and found herself blushing. Taking a moment to compose herself, she glanced back at Aspen then at the paramedic. "What about Issac...? Will he be alright?" She asked.

((Alright guys, I'm going to head off to bed!! Hope to be back on soon, I got a bit of a busy day tomorrow, but hopefully during the night I can get on! Also, if anyone feels it is time to initiate the time skip to the hospital, feel free to do so, especially since I don't know when I will get on tomorrow!))

(Tommorow and wednesday I will sorta be on, but thursday to sunday I won't be, my apologies. And I gotta go too, I'm tired.) The paramedic stuttered, realizing his mistake, "O-oh! Sorry! I never said that!" The paramedic went back to his work, until he heard Cassie's next comment. He was silent for a bit, lying would be a generally good idea. "He'll be fine. Nothing major." The paramedic lied. His face or tone didn't betray him, as he lied like this quite often. He himself was unsure if Issac would even live. But he had to try. (Timeskip to hospital?)

Tommy sat in the hospital bed, awake. He had burns on his back and legs, and a grade 3 concussion. His memory was back, sort of. In his head were two voices. The Tommy they knew, who had a crush on Cassie, and was jealous of Issac. But then there was Issac, who was convinced Cassie was his sister, and his love for Vinaya would be undying.

The doctors had decided to remove the glass first, so they did, slowly pulling each and every shard out, pouring a bunch of disinfectants all over everything, and then stitching the wounds up and wrapping them in bandages. (I don't know medical crap, but I'm just taking a guess.) Issac had not woken up, but he had become a bit more stable. His breathing was practically normal, and the burns were healing up. They hadn't started work on his leg though, that would come later.

((Okay, did some research, and took some creative liberties. Here goes nothing.))

When Vinaya first awoke, she was in another world. She was hysterical, confused, and afraid, and no amount of soothing from doctors or nurses had been able to calm her. It also hadn't helped that she'd forgotten she spoke English; instead, she was screaming (rather hoarsely) in Konkani. More accurately, she'd been begging, pleading, and fearful. The episode didn't last long; a mild sedative was injected into her IV and she was back out in moments. When she came to again sometime later, the first thing she registered was pain. As she processed this, she only became more and more disoriented and nonplussed. A doctor asked her how she was feeling, and while she understood this doctor, Vinaya couldn't remember how to respond. The only things that came to mind were what she recognized as Konkani words, a language that this doctor surely wouldn't understand. Vinaya hesitantly replied in her native tongue, coughed, and the doctor tilted her head.

"Can you understand me?" Vinaya nodded. "Don't worry, then; your memory will come back to you shortly. Talking right now isn't a great idea, anyway. We're treating you for pretty bad smoke inhalation, so your throat probably hurts quite a bit, and your voice is hoarse anyway. Which is also why you're coughing and why you have the cannula around your face -" here, the doctor indicated the thin tube letting oxygen in through her nose "- which is a huge improvement from earlier."

As Vinaya listened, the doctor patiently explained the extent of her ailments. She definitely had a concussion, the severity of which was yet to be determined, but she'd need to be woken every two hours to prevent slipping into a coma. Coupled with the smoke inhalation, she should expect frequent and painful headaches or migraines for a while. On top of that, she'd have a lingering cough and her voice would be hoarse, but her shortness of breath was expected to disappear within the next few hours (along with her memory loss). Her throat would also be sore, both from her earlier intubation (before she'd awoken at all) and as a symptom of smoke inhalation. This was all on top of scattered burns over her body, varying in severity, which would need to be treated regularly with creams and bandages to prevent infections and minimize scarring (though the doctor regretfully promised that Vinaya would definitely come away with scars). These, Vinaya quickly found, were painful, but not life threatening. There were also bruises scattered among the burns; one of the nastiest was spread across her chest and ribs, where she'd apparently broken a rib or two from some type of fall or pressure - her ribs were tightly wrapped for this reason. She also sported a cast on her right leg, from her toe to just above her knee, for a broken fibula. Overall, Vinaya was in a decent amount of pain, so attached to her IV was a morphine drip which she was permitted to press the button for once every four hours. As Vinaya tested this, she found that the drip came with a rushing dizzy feeling as well as heat throughout her body. Once these passed, however, the pain faded.

((I'm describing the morphine & broken leg from experience, by the way. No research done there; feel free to correct me if I get anything wrong.))

"How are you today, Tommy?"

Tommy looked at the doctor confused, "Sorry, My name is Issac, not Tommy." He frowned a little, "We've already been over this Doctor."

The Doctor sighed, "Alright, Issac. how are you?"

He smiled, "Im still sore, but I feel much better, the dilauded is helping a lot... Do you have any word of Vinny? I know she was there, in the fire... And what about my other friends, why cant I see them"

"I cant technically give that information out, it would be a HIPPA violation. However, if you're up for it, I may be able to convince the floor doctors to let you visit her, however she has been through quite a bit so they may not allow it until she's recovered. The other boy, Is- Er, Tommy, he will recover too, but his road will probably be much longer.... The others, they can't see you because they're not family...?"

"We are family though.." Tommy frowned, "We're all we have, and what about Cassie? I haven't seen her yet, and she's my sister!"

The Doctor opened his mouth to say something, then stopped... "You're right.. Again, I'll see what I can do." He stood up and walked out of the room and sent the request to Vinaya's attending doctor, claiming it might help Tommy's memory recover correctly. He also put Cassie on the allowed visitor's list, hoping seeing her may make his Tommy personality the dominant one again.

Tommy sat in the room, confused, rubbing his head. He wished he could see Cassie. He laid back and closed his eyes, he was wondering how she was, he knew she wasn't hurt. He wanted to see her badly, to see her smile, to look into her eyes.
