we are abraham's people

the backstory.

In 1910, Moon Ji-U stood before his Presbyterian Church and declared with great vigour that we were all sons and daughters of Abraham. The room roared, exploding into songs of worship and praise. This was his crystallizing moment where he saw his future before him. Brothers and sisters, coming side by side of each other and living out the promises that their Lord had planned out for each one of them. But there was something in the way: society.

Japan had just effectively annexed Korea with the Japan-Korea Treaty, and the Japanese were starting to take the arable land. Ji-U could sense that something bigger was going to come; something much worse. So, as he stood there making his declarations, he put through his plan. They were all to sell all their belongings; sell every piece of material possession they had of this world. And that they would move into the land. They would build their own houses, hunt, grow their food, and start their own community; live the way that God had intended for them to live.

This was the beginning of Abraham’s People Community.

Over the span of one hundred years, four generations of families lived within Abraham’s People Community. No electricity, no running water, no cars, and absolutely no contact with the outside world. Those who lived in the outside world were corrupt, evil, and were not humans. Abraham’s People were the only humans left on this Earth and were replaced with the Enemy in accordance with Moon Ji-U’s teachings. That was the reason why they stayed in this town they have created for themselves.

The boys of the town spend their day at school and their free time learning how to hunt with the older men and discovering the land that they grow their crops on. The girls, however, spend their days learning how to be housewives, being educated on how to clean the house top to bottom, cook mouth-watering feasts, and how to please their future husbands. A woman’s role in the world was to bear children and to submit to her husband. The man’s role was to provide for the family and protect. This is why it was so important to whom your spouse was to be.

Every Daeboreum (The first full moon of the year; Day 15 of the Month 1), Moon Chin-Mae – the leader of Abraham’s People, which was passed down to him from his father – pairs up the selected singles within the town to be married. If you were between the ages of twenty-one and twenty-four, you were eligible. Chin-Mae has the final say in whom is matched with whom, whether people like it or not. After all, he was the chosen messenger from God. This year Daeboreum is quite special, for Chin-Mae’s only son – the future leader of Abraham’s People – was to be wed to a special someone. And once he was wedded, he would then be told all of the family secrets; to become the next leader of the people.

the daughters.

the wife to be
The one the Leader deems to be the most desirable woman for his son and will bear him a grandson. All her life, her parents trained her how to stand, sit, talk, sleep, eat, drink and breathe as a housewife. Not just any housewife; but the most obedient housewife within the settlement. She knows their religion inside and out, and could walk the settlement with ease with her eyes closed. She would do anything and everything for the Leader and his family - and of course, she was over the moon to find out that she would be marrying the only son of the Leader. However, to The Son, he sees nothing but a brainwashed idiot. Marrying the Son -- taken

the revenge
This ball of fire has always been known as the settlement’s troublemaker. Always trying to go against any rules set up for them, the Revenge does what they want, when they want and where they want. Because of this radical behaviour, it has landed her family in some hot water multiple times. The Revenge never seemed to understand that for every rule they broke, their parents would have to deal with the physical beatings from the Leader. While they’ve been a wild spirit, their twin has been the polar opposite; which made them the perfect sacrifice for the Moon ceremony. After witnessing their sibling being sacrificed, The Revenge has harboured their feeling of rage and anger; waiting for that moment that she can take revenge on the people who sacrificed their twin. Marrying the Hidden -- taken

the only child
She was the miracle child of this little family. Their mother and father tried for so many years to conceive even after multiple miscarriages. The whole settlement believed that they were committing some sort of sin that was stopping them from conceiving. They were forced to repent despite having the cleanest records in all of the settlements. Finally, The Only Child was born - but with a deformity. It led the settlement to believe that the child was cursed, especially after the family could no longer conceive another child afterwards. They are the outcasts of the settlement, and every parent prays that their child won’t be paired with The Only Child, the cursed child. Marrying the Tricked

the stolen
Twenty one years ago, a loving mother lost her first daughter. She had had three sons, but at last, had the girl she had been longing for. However, one morning, she woke up to find that her baby had passed in her sleep. Her husband, who worked as a recruiter, claimed that from that moment on, she had gone 'mad'; crying, staring blankly into the abyss and refusing to smile or talk. The husband didn't tell anyone or their boys what had happened in fear that his wife would be taken away for her 'mad behaviour'. While on a mission to Seoul, recruiting new people for the community, he noticed a baby left unattended for a split few moments. Without a moment of hesitation, he grabbed the child from the stroller and ran as fast as he could. He made his way back to the community with the new child, praying that it would 'knock the madness' from his wife. Well, it sort of worked. And now the child lives life amongst Abraham's People, not knowing that her kidnapping story has been shared with the world. after all, she was the daughter of a large CEO company. Marrying the Betrayer

the sons.

the son
The only son to the leader of Abraham’s people and the heir to the leadership. He has always lived life with a silver spoon in his mouth, having people serving him every second of his day. He has never had to lift a finger with everything before him only a command away. Now, at the age of 21, it’s time for him to marry and start his own family. Every family member in the settlement dreams of the day that their daughter would marry the Leader’s son. It would mean a lifetime guarantee of safety, food and comfort for their families. However, things are starting to show that they’re not all that they seem and that this happy little settlement was based on lies and murder. Marrying the Wife To Be -- taken.

the hidden
The Hidden has been raised their whole life being told that the feelings that they feel are wrong. That the desire and love they have for certain people were evil and a sin, and they would have to pray it away. At the age of eight, their family tried to perform an exorcism after they had asked their parents why men had to marry women and vice versa. It was traumatic and has caused them to hide their true self for all these years. Even now as they stand to be married, there is something in the pits of their stomach that tells them that everything about this is wrong. Marrying the Revenge

the tricked
While many families in the settlement have generational roots, The Tricked is a freshly rooted tree. One day in Seoul, when they were only very little, their family was out for lunch when two older gentlemen approached them. They began to talk before asking if they’d like to come and have some tea with them. Within a week, their family sold all their belongings and moved to Abraham’s Peoples settlement to start a new life. The Tricked was often scolded by their parents when they would ask to play with a game boy or if they could watch television - being made to believe that these things were just part of their imagination and never existed. But even as 21-year-old, he can still remember going to the movies and riding in cars. Although, they have learnt from the past that talking about them openly leads to punishment. Marrying the Only Child

the betrayer
The Betrayer has been groomed his whole life to be The Son's best friend. After his father got into some mess with The Leader, on the blink of being executed, he offered his son up to be the son's watchful eye. to report back with anything and everything the son has done that was out of line or suspicious. The Leader agreed, and The Betrayer and The Son finally met. They became school mates and would spend their weekends together by the lake. as they grew older, they became close best friends. The Betrayer continues to report back to The Leader, but after all, it's all he's known his whole life. There's nothing wrong with reporting, right? But when it comes to The Son's announcement that they're going to leave the community and sneak out, he needs to follow his heart; should he stay with his best friend, or should he go and tell the leader? the beginning of the end.

the personality.

Do-Yun has an INTP-T personality type, known as the Logician. Someone with this personality type is introverted, intuitive, thinking and prospecting; seeking out unlikely paths, mixing willingness to experiment with personal creativity. He prides himself on his unique perspectives and vigorous intellect. He can’t help but puzzle over the mysteries of the universe like some of the most influential philosophers and scientists.

He often loses himself in thought – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. People with this personality type hardly ever stop thinking. From the moment they wake up, their minds buzz with ideas, questions, and insights. At times, they may even find themselves conducting full fledged debates in their own heads. Imaginative and curious, Do-Yun can find endless fascination in the working of his own mind.

From the outside, Do-Yun looks like he lives in a never-ending daydream. He has a reputation for being pensive, detached, and a bit reserved. That is, until he tries to train all of his mental energy on a moment or the person at hand, which can be a bit uncomfortable for everyone. Regardless of the mode he is in, Do-Yun is an introvert and tends to get tired out by extensive socializing. And after a long day, he craves time alone to consult his own thoughts.

Even though it may seem that he is unfriendly or uptight, Do-Yun actually has a bright, friendly side. When he connects with someone who can match his mental energy, he lights up, leaping from one thought to another. Few things energize him like the opportunity to swap ideas or enjoy a lively debate with another curious, inquiring soul. He also loves to analyze patterns. Without necessarily knowing how he does it, Do-Yun often has a Sherlock Holmes-like knack for spotting discrepancies and irregularities. In other words, it’s a bad idea to lie to him.

Ironically, Do-Yun shouldn’t always be held at his word. He rarely means to be dishonest, but with his active mind, he sometimes overflows with ideas and theories that he hasn’t thought all the way through. He may change his mind on anything from his weekend plans to a fundamental moral principle, without ever realizing that he has appeared to have made up his mind in the first place. In addition, he is often happy to play devil’s advocate in order to keep an interesting discussion humming along.

Do-Yun could spend all day musing about ideas and possibilities – and he often does. That said, the practice, everyday work of turning those ideas into reality doesn’t always hold his interest. Fortunately, when it comes to dissecting a tricky, multilayered problem and coming up with a creative solution, few personality types can match his creative genius and potential.

Wanting to understand everything in the universe, there is one area that tends to mystify Do-Yun: human nature. As the personality name, ‘Logicians’, suggests, he often feels most at home in the realm of logic and rationality. As a result, he can often find himself baffled by the illogical, irrational ways that feelings and emotions influence people’s behaviour – including his own. It doesn’t mean that he is unfeeling. He generally wants to offer emotional support to his friends and loved ones but doesn’t necessarily know how to. And because he can’t decide on the best, most effective way to offer support, he feels like he may just hold off on doing or saying anything at all.

the virtues.

Analytical

Do-Yun analyzes everything that he comes across, from research data to the behavior of the people around him. This gives him the knack for spotting unexpected patterns and connections that other personality types might overlook.

Original

Thanks to his unrelenting imagination, Do-Yun can come up with creative, counterintuitive ideas that wouldn't occur to most people. Not all of these ideas are feasible, of course, but his willingness to think outside the box can produce remarkable innovations.

Open-Minded

He is driven by curiousity and an intense desire to learn everything that he can. Do-Yun tends to be receptive to new ideas and ways of doing things - as long as those ideas are supported by sound reasoning

Curious

Do-Yun is always casting about new pursuits, hobbies, and areas of research. One week, he might be obsessed with learning about farming, and the next, he might lose himself in discovering about building houses. When inspiration strikes, he goes all in on his newfound interest, learning everything he can.

Objective

He cares about the truth. Rather than taking comfort in ideology or received ideas, he wants to understand what's really going on beneath the surface of things. As a result, he can be relied upon to combat bias and misinformation, even when it isn't easy to do so - and they expect other people to be honest with him in return.

the vices

Disconnected

Do-Yun often gets lost in his own train of thought, even when he's around other people. When he finally resurfaces with something to say, he may find that the conversation has already moved on with him. This can cause him to feel disconnected from other people, especially in large social gatherings.

Insensitive

Do-Yun sees rationality as the key to a better, happier world. At times, he may underestimate the importance of such irrational values as emotion, compassion, etiquette, and tradition. As a result, he may inadvertently come across as insensitive or unkind, even though his intentions are generally good.

Dissatified

He can't help but imagine how things could be better than they already are. Do-Yun is constantly on the lookout for problems to solve, topics to learn, and new ways to approach things. Taken too far, this type fof mindset can become overwhelming, as he is constantly trying to reinvent the wheel rather than reliably addressing his needs and responsibilities.

Impatient

Do-Yun takes pride in his knowledge and in sharing his ideas. When it comes to explaining his rationale, however, he isn't always patient. If his conversation partner doesn't follow along or seems sufficiently interested, he may give up with a dismissve "never mind"

Perfectionist

At times, Do-Yun gets so lost in analyzing various options that he can never reach a decision. He wants to ge tthings done, but his quest for perfection can get in the way. He may also give up on projects that don't match the ideal vision of his mind.

likes.

Going for a swim in the lake on hot day, fishing, people watching, walking in the rain, when his mum plays with his hair, a warm, cozy bed.

dislikes.

Having to speak in front of a group (especially giving presentations in class or when having to read off paper), writing letters or essays, itchy skin (has allergies to strawberries), not getting a good enough sleep

the messiah.

The community sang praises and bowed onto their knees in thanksgiving to the Lord. For many years, they had been praying for the Leader and Mother Supreme to have a son. They had successfully had nine daughters prior, but not a son who could keep Abraham’s People’s community alive. What would happen had they not had a son to keep the bloodline going? Would the settlement fall to pieces? Would they be enveloped by the sin that lurked beyond the mountains? They didn’t want to even think about it.

But now, at the age of forty, Mother Supreme had become one of the eldest women in the settlement to fall pregnant. She barely had to lift a finger during this pregnancy, as everyone feared that it would affect the baby and ruin the chances of it being a boy. After all, the last nine times she had been pregnant, she had been going about her normal routine. Doing everything a mother should be doing. And it resulted in nine girls. This time around, the community begged for her to relax. They offered their daughters and wives up to tend to the Moon family’s every need.

It seemed to have worked because on the first moon of the winter solstice, they welcomed Moon Do-Yun into the world who came in kicking and screaming.

He may have not known it there and then, but this was a ground-breaking moment for their settlement. The people of the community laid on the floor in tears, praising and giving thanks to the Lord that they would have a son to continue leading them in the future. They had lived in intense fear that they would not be able to keep pursuing their dreams of living in this happy utopia for the rest of their lives and the generations to come. In a way, Do-Yun was their messiah.

the words.

There were immense expectations upon Do-Yun’s shoulders from the moment he took his first breath. It was like he lived under a microscope, shown on display for the world to see and for people to analyse. He was constantly being watched and for some reason, constantly being worshipped by the community around him. As an infant, he wasn’t sure why. As he started school, it only grew worse.

For some reason, everyone had this expectation that he was some magical, intelligent higher being. They believed that the son of the Leader would have the same knowledge and mindset as his father. That he had been born into greatness and would live out that greatness with such ease. On his first day at school, he had been placed in the middle of the classroom’s seating plan. Over the years, he remained in that same spot. And over the years, as the children began to learn how to read and write, he began to struggle.

He felt ashamed of himself. Everyone had these massive expectations of who he was and going to be; and yet as he sat there in class, looking at the board, everything looked muddled up. The letters were wavy, refusing to stay still for even a second so he could read what was going on. He felt too embarrassed to ask the teacher what was happening, so continued to push through. A couple of weeks later, the teacher noticed the difference of work produced between the other children and Do-Yun. He didn’t want to assume that there was anything physically wrong with Do-Yun – after all, he was the next leader. Instead, he saw it as a reflection of his own teaching and that he was failing.

He moved Do-Yun closer to the front of the room, and ensured to keep a watchful eye over the boy. However, he movement made no change to his work much to the teacher’s dismay. He was desperate to ensure he succeeded at his job. Afterall, if the Leader ever found out that his son was failing his classes, it would land on him, not Do-Yun. So, he gave Do-Yun that extra help. He gave him pre-filled out tests to copy off from. He gave him extra one on one time together. He even changed the grades to make Do-Yun a top student.

All to keep the Leader happy

the jacobs.

As Do-Yun grew older, his father began to encourage him to participate in Higher Council work. However, Do-Yun didn’t want to be apart of this elite club (despite knowing that eventually he would have to take over the whole community). He wanted to use his hands and work; he wanted to search out for deer and other wild animals, kill them and then provide it to the community. He wanted to be with nature and surround himself with it. His father wasn’t very pleased with this sort of enthusiasm to be so far away from the Higher Council.

One day, his father instructed the Hunters that Do-Yun would be coming to work with the Higher Council for the day. He had no choice but to follow his father and see what the big deal was. As they walked together into the Higher Council chambers, his father explained to him that today they would be having a conversation with Mr and Mrs Jacobs. They were second generation settlers whose grandparents were foreigners to Korea. Apparently, their crops and chickens had been dying lately and no one could explain why.

As Do-Yun entered the ‘meeting room’, there he found Mr and Mrs Jacobs – arms tied up above their heads with rope, attached to the wall. Their tear stained cheeks and trembling lips were not a sign of a pleasant conversation they were apparently meant to have. The Leader stood before them, and began to question them about their crops and chickens. Mr Jacobs trembled in fear, sobbing that he had no idea why they were dying. Do-Yun’s father didn’t seem to like the answer. With a snap of a finger, the Higher Council staff within the room began to violently whip the couple. Tears and blood splattered all over the walls, ceiling and floor.

Do-Yun felt sick to his stomach. He had known that people had been beaten in the past for their sinful ways. But the couple before him, did they really deserve any of this? Of course not. Do-Yun wanted to stop what was happening before them. But, for some reason, he couldn’t seem to find his voice. His legs were frozen solid. All he could do was stand there, watching these two innocent people scream and cry in agony as their flesh was torn by the whips.

It became one of his biggest regrets in his life.

the family.

Moon Chin-Mae, 62 | “The Leader” | Do-Yun’s Father

The Leader of Abraham’s People. Just like his father, his grandfather and his great grandfather, Chin-Mae is the leader of the religious group. His position was passed down to him, just as the religious texts have instructed, and he will pass on down to his son, Do-Yun, when the time comes.

All this life, he has aimed for a son. After having nine daughters, he almost gave up hope. The community that they had built was starting to show cracks and fault lines. Without a son to follow the bloodline, everything would come crumbling down. Thankfully, Do-Yun was born. And from that moment, he made sure to put all his time and energy into ensuring their son grew up to be the fine, fit leader that would lead this community. And, when the time came, he would be the one to show Do-Yun how the community was run behind closed doors.

Do-Yun has always been somewhat intimidated by his father. After all, he is the great leader of this community. It felt that every second he was with him, he was being moulded into this future leader, becoming less like himself along the way.

Kim Mago, 61 | “Mother Surpreme” | Do-Yun’s Mother

Her parents believed from the moment she was born that Mago was made for greatness. That’s why they decided to give her the name Mago; named after the creator Goddess in ancient Korean mythology. The legend of Mago expresses the interconnection of dreams and reality, past and present lives, karma and destiny, microcosm, and macrocosm. She created all of nature and its geographical formations of the universe.

Ask anyone in the community, and they would tell you that Mago is the sweetest, kind-hearted woman you could ever meet. She works hard to keep her husband happy, but also to ensure the women of the community feel safe, secure, and supported. While she is the mother of ten children, she likes to remind the community that she is a mother to all. If they ever have any concerns, they are welcome to come and speak to her, and to receive some wisdom (of course, it’ll cost you; one of the juiciest pears growing on top of the mountains as an offering).

Mago and Do-Yun’s relationship is one full of nature and nurture. As there was such an age gap between him and his sisters, it gave Mago more time to spend one on one time with him. She could see his struggles at school, and because she couldn’t read or write herself, she felt helpless to offer him support. Instead, she ensured to make all his favourite meals at dinner to make sure he had a happy heart (and stomach!).

The sisters: Moon Ae-Ri (40), Moon Cho (39), Moon Eunji (38), Moon Hana (36), Moon Heejin (35), Moon Hyuk (33), Moon Jang-Mi (32), Moon Sang-Hee (31), Moon Gyeong (29).

When Do-Yun was born, his eldest sister, Ae-Ri, was already nineteen years of age. By the time he was two, she was off and getting married. After that, he didn’t see much of his sister; and the same went with all the others. Once they were married and off with their husbands, the only time he seemed to see them was at big festival events or if they happened to randomly drop by for a few moments. Quite often, he would have no idea who these women were; they would have to remind him that they were his sisters to which he'd respond with an “ahh, okay”.

Out of all the children, Gyeong and Sang-Hee were the only two sisters that he spent most of his time with. Even then, it wasn’t an awful lot. He would see them at mealtimes and then before bed as they sat together for their religious stories and texts. In a way, he felt completely detached from his siblings. He had hoped that maybe one day his parents could bring another son into the world, despite knowing how old they were (and the fact that they had him was a miracle in itself). But honestly, he just didn’t want to feel so alone anymore in a family so big.

overview
Structured like a tower, Yuuki looms over their peers, a shocking spark of ash and burnt. Oftentimes compared to a ghost, they are not nearly as pale as the name implies, stained by the sun’s rays. Despite the years sinking them, they walk with a straight back and emboldened shoulders. Their hips have a natural sway as they strut, and in front of elders within Abraham, they will shorten their gait and close their sides. A phantom about the farms, floating along on their tiptoes and disappearing their charms at the slightest notion someone may be watching.

Ueno Yuuki’s face, however, is one thing the ghost cannot make fade. Stark brows, pallid complexion, deep-set eyes, and a devilish smile: they all haunt him via the other’s looks and the reflection upon a lake or the back of a pot. The face that looks back at them, the one facet that makes them feel wholly their own within this body, is one that detracts. It marks her as other: from the dark circles that Yuuki once emphasized with kohl and eye shadow to the quirk in their thin-cut brows to the way his hair accentuates and softens the sharp jaw. It an unavoidable reminder of the facts they hold hostage in their heart, unwilling to let go despite the circumstances of this life. The hopelessness that consumes them.

Yet, Yuuki has no intentions on cutting their hair. They don’t wish to do away with any fo the features that they gaze upon like Narcissus in the river.

you called me a star.

the virtues.

persuasive

A small smile. ”I was just following Yunnie to the fields!” A deceptive twist of their ankle, almost as though they’re stretching, when instead they’re stomping out a small fire. ”Sir,” they add, sheepishly. — A skill fitting for someone who oftentimes finds himself under scrutiny and in places he shouldn’t be.

logical

With multiple hiding places and plans ruminating, Yuuki utilizes a practical approach to anything nefarious. Pragmatism abounds, they will never do something that they don’t have an escape plan for. — A skill best found within a creature whose livelihood perhaps depends most on outsmarting visionaries and zealots.

empathetic

”Shh, shh–” they whisper to a friend, caressing their hair and untangling it, eyes peaked wide to look for any tattlers. Tears mar the friend’s face, and they continue to soothe, whispering, ”I’m so sorry…”. The pain cements within Yuuki, wishing they could yield all for their friends — A trait common to those seen with callousness and frigidness.

dutiful + moral

”Really?” Their brow quivers upright, standing witness to something so cruel. ”He’s just a kid,” they’ll comment, daring to question. Yet, they’ll suffer punishment with a head low in respect. — a trait the result of accepting fate, yet carving still an existence of one’s volition.

inquisitive

Questioning and orderly sneakiness requires a sense of curiosity; Yuuki falls prey to this sensation, always eyeing and logging. — there is danger and downfall guaranteed without such a trait.

contemplative

They bite their tongue, holding it limply between the layers of teeth and gum. They watch, bittered, as another virgin passes, another year, but they find solace in the mind — a trait best suited for those who cannot speak their mind, but can find freedom within the brain.

the vices

cowardly

“What are you doing?” Yuuki hears a voice shout, looking back to find no one. Instead, they see a friend, caught stealing lemons while he steals berries. They drop the fruits, walking silently away as their criminal partner is caught, guilt lining them but fear loosening its grip on them. — a pitfall of those most afraid.

distant

Friends and foes no little of Yuuki, who opts to keep things concealed and held under lock and key, buried deep within a nearby glen. — lonesomeness has become a necessity.

the missing.

song yu-min.

Born to a wealthy CEO and his equally successful wife, Yumin was destined for success, though her life of luxury was cut short when she was taken from her stroller at only a few months old. Now, she is the only daughter of a family of six. At twenty-one, she is soon to be married to a man she barely knows.

body type
A slightly curvy physique with a round, sweet face.
face claim
Lee Suhyun

the CEOs daughter.

the personality.

Yumin is sweet and bubbly, she does every task she does with a cheerful demenor, no matter how difficult. She was brought up to be polite and gentle and that is how she continues to behave. She is a lover of animals, she would spend every waking moment on the farm if she was allowed, however she had a duty to be a housewife. She is especially passionate about horses, though she doesn't have as much time to spend with them as she would like. She enjoys cooking, but much prefers baking sweet treats, especially cakes for the community to share.

However, much of this joy is surface level. Despite being a miricle child, a child who died and was ressurected, her mother was still mentally and emotionally unstable. Deep down, she knew this child wasn't hers, but she simply couldn't cope with the idea that her baby was gone. Although Yumin is completely unaware of her situation, she knew her mother treated her differently to her brothers. She assumed the abuse was to shape her into a submissive housewife, it was necessary to make her obedient and quiet. She couldn't get away with the same behaviour as her brothers, she would be brutally beaten for trying to play rough like they did. It wasn't right for her to play games with them in the garden, she should play with the doll house, instead. She puts on a sweet and happy facade in order to avoid punishment.

She often finds herself crying when she's on her own, but she's not sure why. She has a terrible, terrible fear of childbirth. She didn't know how it worked, but she knew some women didn't make it out alive. Was God punishing her for going against his will? Her job was to procreate, she shouldn't be afraid of it, but she's terrified.

the virtues.

Compassionate

Yumin is incredibly caring towards both humans and animals. She doesn't like seeing things getting hurt which makes her both a good and bad fit for Si-U. Though she cares greatly for him and will look after him when he needs, she is heartbroken when he's in pain. She feels guilty that she can't help him, as a wife she feels she should be looking after him. However, her compassionate nature makes her a good carer, even if she doesn't feel like it.

Creative

Although she isn't really allowed to, she really enjoys art and music. She often sings while she cooks and cleans, though is afraid of doing so outside of her own home. She is quite skilled, though can't use this skill for anything other than her own entertainment. She hides her paintings under her bed to avoid being caught.

Curious

Yumin is always curious about how the men of the village live, she wants to know about their hunting, their camping trips, all the things she can't do. She finds herself idly watching from her window as she cleans, observing their work.

Affectionate

Yumin's love language is physical affection, which is a shame considering she isn't really allowed to do it. She gives out hugs liberally at home, however.

the vices

Naive

Although most of Abraham's people were naive to the outside world, the women were kept even more out of the loop. She is afraid of the people outside of the village, assuming they're more dangerous than the people inside.

Emotional

In her teen years, her father often told the village she was hysterical as she was highly sensitive and emotional. In reality, these were trauma responses to her abusive mother. He was fully aware of the abuse but he tried his best to hide it to avoid he and his family being evicted from the village due to his wife's insanity, instead claiming his child was hysterical. Yumin learned to hide her emotions, only crying when she knows she's alone.

Unintelligent

Being female, Yumin wasn't educated as thoroughly as the males in the village. She doesn't understand basic maths or science, but has a basic grasp on language. Her education was focused on how to be a housewife rather than how to provide.

Dependent

Yumin is heavily dependent on the men in her life as she hasn't been taught how to live independently. Without her father or husband to hunt the food, she would have nothing to cook, and she certainly doesn't have it in her to kill.

likes.

Animals, especially horses. Baking, sweet foods, going for walks, long dresses and skirts, plants, delicious feasts.

dislikes.

Having to show skin, crying in front of others, crying children, sour fruit.

fears.

People outside of their village, losing her family, the unknown, her mother, loud noises, being seen as insane, childbirth, small spaces.

the disappearance.

Yumin, being so young when she was taken from her family, has no memory of them. Her first memory was sitting in the garden in the arms of her father, watching her brothers play. Her parents were on a trip to the city centre in Seoul, on a mission to spoil their newborn daughter. She was asleep in her pram as her mother picked out new clothes and toys for her. She had only love for her daughter, wanting her to have the best life she possibly could. While stood on the path, asking a stranger for directions, Yumin was snatched from her pram by a stranger.

Yumin's parents were devastated, their only child was gone. They tried their hardest to get their daughter back, using all the money and resources they had to get her kidnapping investigated. However, many years later, they had their daughter declared dead in homes of creating some closure, completely unaware that she was living a completely different life to the one they had hoped for her.

childhood.
TW; Abuse, infanticide
Yumin struggled being an only girl, she had to live a completely different life to her brothers. She could only watch them play outside, getting dirty and rolling in the grass, but she was only allowed to play with feminine toys like dolls. She would often try to sneak out and play with them, where she could be loud and jump and get messy. She was, unfortunately, always caught and punished.

Her punishments ranged from being shut in her room, locked in a wardrobe, deprived of food or physically beaten by her mother. As an adult woman, she still has some scars from his incidents, especially on her knuckles and fingers from trying to escape. She was often kept inside to try and hide the abuse as her father worried his wife's insanity would be discovered.

Her mother had a temperamental relationship with her. She was her miracle baby, the girl she always wanted who had passed away and somehow been returned to her. She was Gods gift, but she wasn't the same as when she had given birth to her. Some days, she would dote on her every need, cuddling her tightly and giving her the affections he so craved. Other days, she was devil spawn, a changeling that took her daughters place that fateful night, replacing her with an inhuman creature. Her father would have to stop her from almost killing her, believing she needed to drown the changeling to return her real daughter to her.

As Yumin grew older and quieter, the abuse began to lessen. She had learned what behaviour upset her mother and avoided it as much as possible, though still struggled with the memories of what her mother had done. Her mother, however, was genuinely afraid of her daughter getting married. She couldn't let a demon marry and reproduce, infecting the village with her spawn. Her father simply hoped Yumin leaving their home would improve his wife's mental state.

Ha Ji-ho.

the beginning of the end.

the personality.

Ji-ho would march to the beat of his own drum, if he had one. A strange child since he first settled into the community, few people know how to approach him so he does the favor of approaching them instead. If you are new the community (or new to him), he will be the first to introduce himself (most often as Ji-Ho The Wonder Kid). This is especially true if it is someone in his age group. In that case, he will take it upon himself to be a personal ambassador of Abraham's People and their first friend. Much of it comes from a desire to find another person to share his songs and theories with, but that doesn't mean he will speak over them. He welcomes alternative perspectives and anyone who can show him something new will forever earn a place in his heart. That is of course assuming that he hasn't scared them off yet.

Life as it is currently doesn't excite him, but what life could be keeps Ji-Ho working. Though he isn't very charismatic or self-assured, he still wants to contribute to his people's future in his own strange ways.

the virtues.

Imaginative

Ji-Ho's brain never stops. Where most people are content to go through life as it happens, he digs deeper in the pursuit of knowledge. The words "why," "when," and "how" are a constant occurrence, but often ends with him being chastised for disrupting the class. Because of this, he's taken to spinning his own narratives, be it about heaven or Earth. More than once, his writings have been confiscated for being heresy (which is nothing to say about his proposed lyrical changes to existing hymns), but it hasn't stopped him from continuing to think, dream, and write about what he sees in front of him.

Energetic

He never seems to run out of power, often pushing himself to his physical limits to get even remotely sleepy. It isn't uncommon to see him still running around after chores are done or homework is finished.

Meticulous

If Ji-Ho is going to do something, he will do it right. He pours over his work endlessly, checking every detail before the deadline. Gifts, classwork, chores, construction, everything must be done his way and the correct version of his way before he presents it to others. If asked for help, he will do the same for the asker as he often notices things that others do not.

Talkative

Give a person five minutes with Ji-Ho and he'll act like he's known them his entire life. Parents, children, teachers, pastors, he talks to them as though there's no age, gender, or ranking gap. Backing away from a conversation is nigh impossible as he has no issue turning a quick "goodbye" into a five minute affair.

Humble

Part of the reason he asks as many questions as he does is because he is aware of how little he knows. Pride is a sin and Ji-Ho is uncomfortable with the idea of overselling his skills lest they backfire on him.

the vices

Self-Doubt

Despite the stories, the songs, and the confidence with which he speaks, Ji-Ho's resolve folds under pressure. A life of being told his memories never existed has left him constantly questioning what's real and what's a product of his imagination. He finds himself repeating affirmations, ask his friends for confirmation of past events, and collecting evidence to codify what he knows to be true.

Oblivious

Despite how observant he is regarding the external world, he doesn't pay much attention to people's feelings. While he might ask about a person's day, he rarely vets whether they are lying. Unless you've wronged him in the past, he will take your word at face value.

Idiosyncratic

Where most people go left, he goes right and where the other members walk towards the light, he peers into the darkness. He has a difficult time conforming to the "normal" way that his elders ask him to perform tasks, even when explained appropriately. This is, by no means, an attempt to be contrarian so much as an instinct to act in accordance with his own method of problem solving. More than once he's felt the strike of a ruler against his wrist for filing papers or calculating math using a different technique.

Conflict Averse

Even on the subjects that he knows, Ji-Ho's instinct is to back down when confronted by others. He flinches at the thought of getting into an extended fight with someone, particularly if it's someone close to him. He would rather concede his point than risk losing a friend.

Static

Somewhere between the age of fourteen and eighteen, . Through all the beatings, "reeducation" classes, and counseling from his elders, Ji-Ho's core has remained the same. When it comes to his flaws, he finds himself having the same conversations with the same people and getting in trouble for the same things.

likes.

Rain, Storms, Singing, Chatting, Napping, Hunting, Swimming, Writing

dislikes.

Working, Silence, Humid heat, High pitched noises, Mushy foods, His parents, Committing penance

He remembers the American rock playing over the department store speakers better than the well dressed men that approached his parents. The devil's music they called it. While they spoke of God and demons, Ji-Ho captured monsters on the game system they had on display. The copy of Diamond and Pearl that he came home with was crushed a week later for infecting their home. Along with the rest of the cassettes, CDs, and radio, his parents sold off his games to "purify" their family. The doctor called it "electromagnetic hypersensitivity," but they were convinced that the evil in the world had infected his mother and moving to the commune was the only way to save everyone.

The birth of Ji-Ho's sister marked the end of one era and the start of a new one. Their parents had been trying for over two years before So-Yeon came into this world, gasping for air. Given the ten year age gap, they expected him to cease playing pretend and start acting like the older brother than he was supposed to be. No more drawings, no more playing pretend, and no more ramblings of their old life. They knew that letting him influence their second childhood would lead to tanking their reputation. Initially he complied with their instructions, but it wasn't long before he resumed his tales of his past life (now with a captive audience). It was clear that the belt wasn't working so they shoved him into the closet and barred the door shut. He missed school for nearly a week, constantly shuffled in and out of the closet based on how he answered their questions. If they aligned with the values of their leader he'd see sunlight. if he mentioned anything about his old life, he'd be taken back to the darkness.

Things like electronics, vehicles, and television could be eked out of Ji-ho's mind, but the music never stopped. Every thud became part of an internal rhythm and every hymn, filler for the lyrics that he couldn't remember. Fragments of foreign music came to him in dreams, often ending with him breaking out in tears over a language he could barely speak. While his parents were slaughtering the animals, he drummed against the dinner table. Once he discovered the noise taut strings could make, he tied twine across wooden planks and plucked them to an inaudible beat. Then he stole his sister's embroidered hoops and after that, tapping half-filled glasses of water. Even if he couldn't perform in front of an audience he could still create a melody in his heart.

And just once, his father joined him.

He'd been helping his father repair their wheelbarrow and overheard him humming familiar words in a language he once knew. The beat came quickly as he rapped his fingers against the wood and only intensified when Ji-Ho began tapping his feet.

"That kind of music just soothes the soul. I reminisce about the days of old. With that old time rock 'n' roll. Still like that-"

And just like that, God imprinted a new world unto him. Though neither he nor his father spoke of that moment again, something had shifted between them. The beatings he thought he outgrew increased in frequency. His parents halved his play time to teach him the family trade and daily room inspections became the norm. But even through all of that, his mind finally found a truth that his parents couldn't bury.

God tasked him with ushering in rock n' roll.

Like a dog skirting the edges of its owner's lawn she too wanders around the community, stirring enough trouble to irritate Abraham's People but never enough to be excommunicated. She doesn't ask for permission, instead begging for forgiveness from her elders.

Weaponized incompetence has become her best friend; a spill here, a foul dish there, and a ruined barn is enough to drive her parents mad. Unfortunately they can only punish her so much. They wouldn't want Yeong-mi to become damaged goods. It's a game of push and pull where neither side will truly let go.

Spite be damned; hatred be damned; selfishness be damned--some weak and twisted part of her still cares about her parents. She wishes that they could have been born in another world where Hae existed and demons did not; she wishes that she could settle for either hate or love instead of the festering wound in her heart.

People who are smart know to keep away from her when her smile drops and she balls her fists; in her loveliest dreams, they do not.

the virtues.

Crafty

Rather than an unabashed heathen, she's reduced herself to a minor annoyance, hiding her true beliefs under a veneer of teenage angst. She knows better than to show her hand--instead she distracts people with a pretty face and a smile that begs for a second chance.

Observant

With the eyes of an owl and the temperament of a crow, few things slip by her. Though her comments are typically meant to embarrass others, she'll occasionally compliment those she deems competent in their field.

Focused

Of the few traits she and Hae shared, their focus was one of them. Once something gains her attention, she will not pull away. Whether the task stems from recreation or obligation, Yeong-mi will not stop until completion. Though her standards aren't the highest in the community, the sentiment remains.

the vices

Spiteful

Where most are guided by the light of God, Yeong-mi is fueled by fire and brimstone. Her spite burns brighter than the flames of Hell and for longer than the embers in the hearth. She hoards indiscretions like a dragon hoards gold; she wants every reason to hate someone. It's the only way to justify her actions.

Violent

She wishes things were different but there are days she can't help herself. The anger flows through her like a demon taking hold of her soul. She screams into her pillow during the dead of night and punches trees until her knuckles are raw. She throws rocks at running hares, aim steady and true.

Insensitive

Though detail oriented, she thinks very little of things that don't interest her. Though she'll lend people an ear, she finds it difficult to relate to people's troubles and often gives useless or overly blunt input.

the beginning.

Hae was the person Yeong-mi loved most in this world and the next. Born only ten minutes apart, the two were thought to be a good omen; they received twice the gifts, twice the praise, and twice the chance of connecting with the future Leader.

They also caused twice as much trouble. Hae's docile nature was as much of an asset was it was a detriment. It was far too easy for Yeong-mi to rope her into digging for worms, climbing trees, or swimming with their gowns on. It was common for the two to come back home with clothes stained beyond repair.

Conversely, Hae's insistence to adhering the Bible's values coaxed Yeong-mi to at least try to complete their chores.

She misses those days when three hours felt like three minutes.

the sacrifice.

It was three years ago, but she relives the moment every night. Her parents indulged the family in a feast of rice, banchan, and beef galbi, Hae's favorite. Yeong-mi ate with grit teeth, more concentrated on wolfing down every piece of meat she could get her chopsticks on. Her sister didn't protest (she never did) so it was up to their mother to swat her hand away. It was a special day so Hae ought to receive the lion's share of the meal.

"It's not fair! It'snotfair! It'snotfair! IT'S NOT FAIR!" she repeated inwardly, then outwardly. She rose from the chair before slamming her bowl on the table followed by her chopsticks.

At first her parents stared Yeong-mi, perhaps misinterpreting her outburst for jealousy before shaking their heads.

"I don't want you to die!"

Her sister walked over and hugged her, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. "I've been bestowed the honor of protecting our community, protecting us. There's no greater purpose than to serve the Lord. Please don't cry." But for every tear she wiped away, ten more took its place, leaving the weaker twin a sobbing mess.

Yes, Hae had always been the stronger of the two physically, spiritually, and emotionally. She was everything Yeong-mi was not. Sweet, selfless, and dutiful to a fault. She never once complained about the punishments leadership doled out for not keeping Yeong-mi in line. Everything Hae did, she did for her.

After the sacrifice Yeong-mi became everything Hae was not. Spiteful, selfish, and unwieldy to a fault. Her troublemaking behavior increased tenfold every time that she was punished because the holy half of her died that night.

All that was left was a hellion feasting on rage.

"Who is your God?"

"Not Him," she hissed.

One hand.

"Who is our God?"

"Not...Him," she wheezed.

Then two.

"WHO IS YOUR GOD?"

"Not Hi-" Her breath stopped as her head slammed against the floor. They'd gone through this song and dance before, but never with such ferocity. She writhed against her father's grip, digging her nails into the back of his palm.

"WHO IS YOUR MAKER?"

She could feel her head spinning; the edges of her vision blurred into darkness as her life left her body.

She was sure that she would see the gates of Hell, but it was not so.

It was a vast nothingness that her soul was anchored to; it was proof that all her suffering was for naught; it was a wonder she chose to rise.

Yeong-mi gasped for air, tears streaming down her face as her father held his head in his hands. She realized then that it had been the two year anniversary of her twin's murder and her father couldn't send another child to their death.

"God. God is our lord and savior," she whispered finally.

She would never be their dutiful daughter nor savior, but she could be their deliverance against Abraham's People.
