The Price of Peace

Kat was able to get Sage free as the demon talked. He was becoming more and more aware to some pains in his chest he must have cracked a rib. It wasn't bad but he;d have to try not to get hit again in the chest. when she worked on him he moved giving her easy access.

"You know I'm curious demon why is it you need us awake? the fun of it?" KAt chuckled as soon as he was free he lunged to his dageered and hopefully get the chance to throw one at the demons head. Talking might not have been smart however it might also have been since he was distracting the demon from his paint. Obviously a ritual of some kind. Never a good idea to let them finish thoses.

Pate looked up when Kate spoke, watching him jumped for his dagger. He gasped and dropped the paint, splattering it all over the floor. It pretty much immediately messed up what ever he was trying to do. Sage didn't know if that was a smart move or not... Mostly because a sneak kill may have been more beneficial than a distraction. Regardless everything was already being put in motion... and there was no redo button.

Sage pulled her Scythe from behind her back and opened up the case, the blade popped out and a long pole extended out, exposing the weapon to its prime. She jumped up and immediately slide between Pate and Kat, taking a swing at Pate while cutting the Reveners off from overwhelming Kat. The surprised gave Kat and Sage a few long seconds to get ahead of him and the minions.

Sadly Sage missed because Pate seemed to rear his body up in an effort trying to avoid the low cut which would taken out his legs. However she didn't stop to rebound, but charged right for the three mini demons, leaving Pate to Kat. Pate had jumped up to avoid Sage's attack, but in the same moment go hit in the upper chest by Kat's dagger. The dagger was meant for his head, but easily found it's way into his chest when he jumped.

Pate yelled in pain, his reaction time was not all that fast. He backed away, it seemed he may have decided to turn tail.

The paint splashed ruining whatever the demon was trying to do that thrilled Kat he was actaully kind of pumped even though he should be scared. He glanced at Sage she didn't look to have taken too much damage. However he should make this fast.

He saw the dagger strike the demon but then the demon decided to turn tail. "No you don't!" KAt said as he dogded to get under Sages scythe the girl was a quick thinker and a skilled fighter. He was happy they were here together. Sage could take three sluggish Raver he would make sure the demon was taken down.

Rushing at the demon he went to jump on him and pull the dagger from his chest as he aimed a hit with the dagger in his hand aiming it actually in the conjunction between head and body. Kat found his movements impeded lightly by his chest's injury, breathing deep was not an option.

Kat jumped on Pate, which was quite the easy feat since the demon was moving almost as slow as a slug. Even with his ribbed screaming with pain. A few weeks and he would be healed right up as long as they weren't broken. When he pulled the dagger from Pate's chest, the man let out a grunt of pain before turning around, then purposely running into a wall with Kat before he could make his killing strike across his neck. He crashed into the wall rather hard in an effort to knock the shaggy haired boy off.

Sage felt rather inflamed. Literally. Her entire body inside was currently on fire. She felt sweat dripping down the back of her neck and arms. Her arms screamed with fatigue was she slashed her blade across the demons. It really only took a few strikes to kill them. They were so slow that their reaction time was really poor.

Sage soon turned to Kat before stumbling lightly forward with the sudden movement. She felt like everything was spinning. She caught herself with her blade, planting into the ground like a walking stick. She watched Pate slam Kat into the wall just before the stairs. "Kat." Sage said almost worried, but she was sure he would be fine.

Pate threw Kat off him before looking at them, "Might want to help your partner, he's dying."

KAt thought he had the demon when he sucessfully removed the dagger but he was then caught off when he was slammed into the wall. KAt grunted and hissed in pain his ribs were most likely more then cracked now. He had also lost his grip his blades clattering to the floor. How was this demon fighting so well in this cold climate? Kat slid off the demon and was going to continue an attack but he heard Sage her voice was off she sounded weak. why?

"What?" The demon said she was dieing the allarmed boy rushed to Sage she was burning up. Where was his bag? He needed the antidote! Why dodnt she tell him she was poisoned? Did she really not know. "Sage don't move anymore!" Kat told her his alarm showed in his voice luckily his bag was in the room since he had it on him when the ambush came. He rushed to it his fear for Sage outweighing his desire to slaughter the demon.

When Kat turned to help Sage, Pate turned to run up the stairs. It was the perfect time to escape now that Kat was distracted. Sage almosted whined, "Kat he is getting away!" Sage pointed out, even as he told her not to move. She was a bit confused, but was starting to fell faint. Though a few minutes more she realized what Pate said. She was dying. Sage didn't realized she was poisoned, she just through it was still burning hot in the room.

What worse, Sage was pulling fast pace maneuvers with her scythe, only pushing the poison through her more. "Crap.. I should have known..." She said. She reached for her own bag in a panic, but it was not on her side. It was next to Kat's, which he was already rushing to it to get it. She had completely forgot she turned down the thermostat before Pate attacked her.

The antidote looked a lot like an epipen for quick use. Just simply stab yourself, so convenient. So Sage would say with extreme sarcasm. But in this situation, the quickness actually counts.

Sage took a few steps to Kat, making her way to the bag. She had a feeling Kat was just going to stab her somewhere with the antidote. She reached in to pull out the PI, pushing the red button to send a team to them. They needed to get help.. they needed to get out of here, "We need to leave.. before we are swarmed down here.." She said with a light pant.

Kat slid to his bag having lost his footing and oh man that hurt. He was having trouble breathing due to the ever worsening pain in his chest. God Sage was worried about the demon getting away? He was worried keeping her alive. With a curse he dug through his bag to remove the pen like antidote applicator. "I said don't move!" KAt fussed he saw her contacting the Amity HQ with her P.I really he should make a mental note to use his more.

He scrambled to her and opened the pin showing the needle before stabbing her in the thigh where the artery was, like an epipen would be used. Pulling her to his chest was his second mistake because the pain flashed through him making his vision go white for a second and he was sure she heard his pained half cry.

Sage shoved the PI back into her bag, ignoring Kat cursing at her to stop moving. She knew that... but they needed to get out of here soon. Before the other Reveners get down the stairs and trapped them down there. They only killed three of them, there was still 30 more anywhere in the lighthouse.

Sage flinched when Kat stabbed her leg with the antidote. It hurt a bit, but she wouldn't complain because it was necessary. Though she was surprised when Kat pulled her to his chest. She would have calmed down a bit if he didn't make it sound like the action of pulling her close was harmful. "Kat... you're hurt." The slam into the wall must of hurt him more than she though. "We need to leave. We need to get outside. We are sitting ducks here i--" Sage was interrupted when there was a very loud BOOM sound at the top of the tower.

It wasn't quite a 'boom' as in an explosion, but one that was very similar to a portal to one of the other dimensions. Most likely hell for the demon's home. Pate most likely had an escape route right on top of the lighthouse. Pate was gone...

Kat was breathing a bit labored trying to push down the pain he knew they needed to leave going outside was there best bet it was too cold for the Raveners. He looked at the stairs he wanted to wait a moment to let the antidote do a bit of its job. Kai was going to flat out murder them. He was not exited to go home.

Sage still to his chest he heard her talk though he only paid half attention to her. "Just an ouchie," Kat assured her and stood "I agree lets go outside it's too cold for them they'll die outside." The cold would also numb the pain in his chest that would be a welcome feeling. He let go of her and sttod he hurridly picked up their stuff "Go on... I'll follow you," Kat told her. Though after the loud sound of a portal opening he knew the demon was gone. Oh if he ever sees that demon again. He almost grinned at the evil thoughts before snapping out of it and going to follow Sages Lead.

'

Sage watched Kat get up. He looked rather pained. That was one great thing about this posion, she didn't feel pained. Just a bit weak and really hot. Sage leaned over and took their stuff from Kat before sling it on her shoulders and heading up. She was expecting to have to rush through a small hoard of Revener, but when they got up the stairs, nothing was there. Sage let out a sigh of relief before opening the door.

Needless to say it took about a half an hour to 45 minutes for the second amity team to get there. These were the red envelope teams, these guys got called on their PI and had to drop everything they were doing just then and rush out to meet them. Neither looked very ready for the cold. Terra was there too, before helping her and Kat up into her jeep.

Needless to say they were rushed to the hospital. Sage went to intensive care for posion and Kat immediately to get X-rays so they could set his ribs. Because Kat had a few broken ribs and a lot of bruised ones... they were on medical leave till he got better. Sage just had to spend a few hours being detoxed. Needless to say, Sage didn't bother texting Kai till after all the crazy doctors were done being pushy and rushing her. She texted her mother, but she said she would stop by later.

While waiting for Kai to get to the hospital, Sage and Kat had to give their briefing on what happened on the mission. Mostly about Mr. Pate. He was a safe assumption to say he was a level C demon about. After an hour of being feed medications, Sage was feeling a bit high... but better. Kat was finally thrown in a bed next to hers. They get to stay fr several more hours till Sage was cleared to go home. Kat could leave now if he wanted.

Kat like Sage was prepaired for a fight. "They must have left with him," Kat said more to himself then Sage. Kat had to sit to wait on the team dispatched his chest hurt, not the worst he's ever been but still not pleasant. He was worried about Sage though he watched her closely. Though when the other team stopped by he smiled "Thanks for showing up so fast," of course they would not have to fight. Kat and Sage were carted to the hospital.

Kat of course fought every bit of the beginning he didn't want to be away from Sage but after a while he calmed down after he was promised to be returned to her. Kat was still for the binding of his ribs and his final check so he could be brought to Sage. He smiled when he saw her he felt releived even though they would both need recovery time.

"Call Kai yet?" Kat asked her when they were alone. Of course Kai was contacted by the hospital and if Sage had not told him about what was happening the man would be very cross when he made it to pick them up.

The room was quiet, and thank god for that. With all the doctors out of the room, Sage could finally breath a bit. Doctors could be so fussy, specially when they thought everything was an emergency. Sage didn't quite thing she was in an emergency state.. but the doctors had thought otherwise. She was immediately thrown in a bed and plugged up to several IVs. Not to mention Sage felt pretty high.

"Hey... did they give you painkillers yet?" Sage asked. Her head swarmed a bit from being a little fuzzy, but she understood Kat. "And yeah.. I texted him as soon as the doctors would let me.. I texted mom too." Sage informed him, "But I bet the hospital beat us to it. He should be here any minute now. At least I think he would be." Sage questioned. They had been there for a good hour. It was possible he was already here and couldn't see them yet since they were still in 'emergency state'.

Now they were in the resting rooms and Sage had a few more hours of lock down before she could go anywhere. Kat most likely was released by now.

Kat was saddened to see all the I.V's in Sage he was drugged but only a bit just something to kill the pain. His head wasn't even that fuzzy. "Yeah I got some painkillers," he told her "Looks like you got a bit too you sound drunk," Kat told her and took her hand since no doctors were in there to tell him not to. "Kai is gonna be mad," he chuckled and kissed her hand. "Might as well rest a bit," he told Sage.

Kai was indeed angry more so that nobody would let him go see Kat and Sage. Kat was released but he'd not leave Sages side he was much to loyal like a dog. Kai paced the waiting room angrily anyone who saw him likely ran from the death aura that surrounded the handsome male. For hours the bluenett waited impatiently asking to go back every few minutes most likely driving the nuses insane.

Sage laughed lightly when Kat said that Kai was going to be mad. Mad might be an understatement. At the moment however, Sage didn't feel all that threatened. Mostly because the drugs kept her in a bubbly state so she couldn't exactly think. Did she really sound drunk? Kai didn't drink, but occasionally Kat and Sage liked to drink a few times just for fun. Sage was a very touchy drunk...

Sage couldn't help but smile when Kat kissed her hand. He was being rather gentle with her at the moment, which meant he was scared. "Don't worry. The doctors said I would be fine." Sage assured him softly. "And I'll rest a bit when Kai gets here... I don't want you to have to take all his anger by yourself." Though if anyone could calm Sage or Kai... it was Kat. As Kai and Sage was more likely to piss each other off.

After a few hours of his waiting, the angry Kai was finally told he could go see Sage and Kat.

Kat smiled when Sage reasured him though he was still worried. The boy squeezed her hand "I won't let kai get too too grouchy," he told Sage Kat knew how to smooth Kai's feathers he and Sage were so much alike but it took different ways to calm them. Kat was not at all happy that Sage wouldn't rest till she saw Kai he wanted her to get better faster that menat resting.

When Kai was allowed in he rushed into the room not caring if people told him not to run "Kat Sage!" he saw the boy up but Sage was the one in critical care. Seeing her hooked to so many lines made the other bluenet more then a bit squimish. He was not a fan of hospitals as it was. "Sage... you idiot,"

KAt smiled "We made it out alive," he told Kai and got one of Kai's glars though the boy only smiled. "And the docs say she'll be just fine," that made Kai relax if only lightly.

"Yeah I'm fine." Sage said with a laugh. She used the hand that was free of IV to wave Kai off almost happily. Only because she was a bit drugged. If he didn't know then, then he knew now. "Just a bit of poison and an ambush. We'll get him next time." Sage promised. Her and Kat were going to slaughter Pate the next time they saw him. That guy was most likely going to be back and he was going to be more tricky. There was no way a plan like this would work a second time.

"Was the cupcake good?" Sage asked Kai. Mostly because she never tried making a coffee cupcake before and it was a experiment. She didn't follow a recipe, she just added Kai's instant coffee into the mix instead of the cocoa powder she did with Kat's. She was sure it was fine, but she kind of hopped the distraction would work. "Mom will be over for lunch tomorrow too." Sage said.

Kai almost growled at Sage then realized she was stoned. With a deep sigh Kai ran his hand through his hair the other hand on his hip in a manner showing off his aggitation. "Just an ambush she says," he muttered darkly. "Just a bit of poison..." Kat had to smile Kai was battling his own demons right now only his kind were harder to fight.

KAt laughed when Kai went from aggrivated to confused when Sage asked about the cupcake. "Is now the time to be worrying about how your food tasted?" he asked Sage dryly. Of course it was good the girl had a way with foods of any kind. "Emma is coming over?" Kai asked as if that just registered, he really needed to clean up before she got onto him but god right now he just wanted to tug Sage home. "I'll see when I can take you two home."

Sage laughed a bit as Kai turned to stammer out of the room to go ask the doctors about Sage's release time. Sage could only smiled up at Kat, who she took the hand of again. As promised, she closed her eyes and began to drift off to sleep resting for Kat. Sage would make a full recovery and so would Kat, so there really was nothing to worry about. They would be back in action by the time Kat's ribbed healed and Sage would be better in the next 24 hours.

End Chapter One

Chapter Two: Wizard on Fire

Team 67: Kin and Phoenix

Phoenix was already up at morning's light. He wasn't much for sleeping in unless he was tried from a mission. The last mission he had was two days ago, so it was possible that they would get one today. Every other day an Amity could be assigned a mission. Didn't mean that they would be assigned one. However Phoenix liked his new job as an Amity... even though he was not supposed to be one.

Phoenix was a cleanser. So he thought. After going through the test with the spirit guardians, Pheo came out with a small ability to lightly feel other people's temperament through touch. It was scary at first and he was not sure what to do, but it was one of the cleanser's ability. Granted it was a rarer one and most cleanser had multiple ability, but Phoenix never once tried to use those skills. He didn't want to be a cleanser.. they just went in after everything was done to clean up. Phoenix wanted to be in the middle of it all, helping people and doing what is right.

With that in mind, Phoenix would not tell a soul. However... as of late he was thinking to tell his partner, Kin.

Kin was his first partner and a really great guy. He was almost as quiet as he was and seemed to care a whole lot. He even let him have his pet bird Lulu. Lulu was a bit chatty when she wanted attention, but if Phoenix let her out of the cage and on his shoulder, she would quiet down. She was very small, no bigger than a child's hand, but a beautiful bright yellow.

Kin and Pheo had only been working with each other for three months now and they got along well.

This morning Phoenix was up with Lulu on his shoulder looking through the fridge to cook some breakfast. Though he was not seeing much. Pheo debated going down to the cafeteria and bringing it up. Waffles actually sounded really good to him. "Maybe... I should go down." Maybe he should invite Kin as well?

Kin woke early as always. If the sun was awake Kin was awake. The man had an almost military schedule when he woke he instantly showered brushed his teeth and got dressed all before most people were even up. His new partner Pheo was like him waking early, he really liked the other boy, really liked him. He was sweet quiet and thoughtful and if he set his mind to it he went after it with all he had. Kin really respected the small boy.

Kin was a heavy fighter so he was bigger then Pheo muscular and a bit intimidating in appearance. When he saw the boy he nodded his greeting he didn't talk in the morning in fact he was told he was like a bear getting out of hibernation. He got a box of cereal from the cabinet and poured a bowl. Kin walked to the table no milk in the bowl just the dry raisin brand cereal. He began to eat as the coffee was set to brew and would be ready in a few minutes.

Kin idly waited for the mail to come bringing the paper and possibly a mission, he was not one who actually enjoyed downtime, he spent quite a lot of time in the gym, he invited Pheo a few times but the boy couldn't really keep up with him just yet. With a bit of work though he would be able to surely. Kin let out a sigh and looked to the TV in the living room. He hated to break the calm but he did want to check the weather.

When Kin got into the room, he immediately went for the cereal in the cabinet. Phoenix watch him as he went about his normal morning routine. Soon he sat down and filled a bowl with dry cereal to eat. It didn't take long for him to turn the TV on either to the news channel for the weather. It was predicted to be cloudy skies. The channel was mostly on about the news in the current Amity news such as new threats and hunted demons.

Phoenix looked to the TV when it started to talk about a newer threat, a level C demon named Pate. A large Revener. Of course after that, Phoenix tuned it out and went back to the matter at hand. What was he going to eat for breakfast? Kin already was eating cereal... so he completely missed his chance to ask him to breakfast downstairs. Really.. it was actually a bit disappointing.

Phoenix let out a tiny sigh before looking back to the fridge again. Still nothing. Lulu chirped softly, causing Phoenix to shove his hand into his pocket and pulling out bird seed to feed her. She happily feed from his hand. Though Phoenix realized he had been standing there with the fridge door open, so he closed it and decided he wanted hot cereal. So he walked over to the stove and turned on some hot water.

With that he went to go sit next to Kin at the table. He then took Lulu on his finger, feeding her seeds again. Pheo looked up to Kin before smiling at him. "I was thinking waffles...." He said. But that was about it. There wasn't any more explanation to it. It was more a statement than anything else.

Kin seemed interested in the demon but like most things he would just let the information sit in his mind. A Ravener... a cold blooded bug like demon, one of them got to C ranking? he took another bite of cereal as he watched they needed to get groceries almost direly. It's not like they didn't have the money Kin just never thought about such things. When Pheo's bird chirped it drew Kin's attention. Kin smiled lightly the bird was pretty sweet if not chatty.

"Waffles?" Kin asked raising a brow when Pheo sat down. The kid was one of few words but really starting the conversation as I was thinking waffles? It oddly made Kin remember that aweful catchy jingle. Do you like waffles? Yeah we like waffles, He grimanced internally that song was almost as annoying as some of the new loud rappers music and he hated that style of music.

Phoenix made eye contact with Kin only long enough to know he had heard the question. His awkwardness with people in general was not unknown. He would be straightforward with his words or nor forward enough. It was not that he wasn't bright, he was just shy. He saw a bit of Kin's confusion when he had looked up at the man.

He quickly looked back at Lulu who was still on his fingers. The little canaries black eyes were the size of beads, but as dark as a black hole. It could be unnerving to some possibly. Though Kin could also be unnerving if you didn't know him very well. Phoenix couldn't say he knew Kin well, but he did know him a bit. Enough to say he was a friend.

Eventually Phoenix nodded slowly. He was slow for a lot of things, another thing that could possibly reflect him as a bit dumb, "I wanted them for breakfast." Phoenix seemed to just be naturally slow when it didn't count for anything. A master of taking his time. Though because of his slow demeanor.. he often missed chances. Such as asking Kin to breakfast downstairs.

When the the water started to ring, Pheo put Lulu on the back of his chair before getting up to make himself some hot cereal.

Kin waited patiently for the slow moving boy. Pheo he at first had thought was just slow but he learned over time he was just that way, he was a very smart boy just some things he took time on. He watched the boy look to the bird. Lulu looked pretty content after eating her breakfast. He then saw the boy was figuring out what to say.

"Then we will get them," Kin stood up at the same time Pheo did he shut off the water and set the pot to the side. He should have known to ask the boy. "Go get ready," he told the boy. Kin had a way about him where you knew when he said jump it was a polite suggestion you would be well to follow.

Kin pretty much took away the hot water, putting it to the back of the stove. Really should he be so surprised when Kin pretty much demanded Phoenix to get ready. Phoenix was not sure, but he kind of likes Kin that way. It didn't really sound like he was demanding, but in a way he was. He would scowl at Pheo if he tried to apologize his way out of it.

So Phoenix nodded his head before walking over to Lulu and taking her off the side of the chair. He went to her cage, which sat by the window. Opening it, he put her on her perch before scooping out the extra seeds in his pocket and putting them in her food dish. Lulu chirped at Phoenix as he closed the cage, "See you later." Phoenix told her.

Phoenix actually did morning exercises. Although Kin went to the gym and tried to get him to lift weights or other extreme regiments, Pheo participated in a training program that was more suited to his fighting style. He was small.. so he fought with a style that was more attuned to pressure points and hand to hand. Phoenix did better at debilitating his foes then killing them. His morning routine usually after breakfast consisted of meditation and flexibility training. Pheo knew one thing, he was much more flexible than Kin would ever be.

After taking a bit of time to get ready, which he did try and rush getting ready, Pheo came back out with brushed hair, a graphic t-shirt of who knows what and some jeans. His red hair looked nice when it was tamed and his green eyes actually sparkled a bit with anticipation. Kin may have thought it was the waffles, but really Pheo was more happy to be spending the time. Not that they were going far, just downstairs to the cafeteria. Unless they went out somewhere nice, which he doubted. There was no reason to go any further then the cafeteria.

"I'm ready... Kin." Phoenix told him as he pulled on a black jacket around his shoulders.

Kin waited for the boy leaning against the doorframe he ran an hand through his normally messy hair and let out a long sigh. Kin decided that since they needed to do shoping they should go out into town to eat. It would just be convenient. He counted off restraunts in his head that served waffles as thats what Pheo wanted.

When Pheo came out Kin nodded "Lets go." he said simply the kid was cute but he was just that ... a kid. Kin had to remind himself often that Pheo was only an 18 year old boy. Kin had thought a few times about a relationship between them but with how little they knew each other he thought it would be foolish so he never brought it up. "We are gonna go out... can do the shopping after we eat."

Kin's clothing was simple he wore a pair of dark jeans faded by wear and a form fitted black shirt he didn't wear a jacket as the weather looked pretty nice. His shoes needed to be replaced though his tennis shoes had been through a rough patch and showed it.
