“I want to, Remus,” insisted Sirius. “Come on, need help up?” he offered, walking over to Remus’ couch.

Sirius nodded, “Right then,” he said. “You two wanna come?” he asked Peter and James. Peter shrugged- he’d go if James went.

James sighed. “I don’t think Madame Promfrey would like that. She’s very touchy about visitors.”

“Alright then,” said Sirius with a nod. “Come on Remus,” he said as he gently tugged at Lupin’s robes.

“I think I know where the hospital wing is. Should be kinda near the Great Hall,” said Sirius as they left the Gryffindor common room.

Sirius roamed the halls with Remus for a bit until he finally found the hospital wing. Inside Madame Pomfrey was attending to a few students whose first class of the day hadn’t gone so well for them (cauldron blowing up in the face, falling off a broom, bit by a plant, etc). As she saw Sirius and Remus entered, she hurried over to them. “What can I do for you boys today?” the nurse witch asked them. “My friend here- his stomach is really bothering him,” explained Sirius. Pomfrey pursed her lips and looked at Remus up and down. “Oh dear, he does look rather unwell…” she said.

Remus looked away. “I… I guess. We just wanted a quick potion.” He had to avoid giving his name. Dumbledore undoubtedly told her about him. He was about to spend a night or two in here every month.

“Well come along now, I’ll see what’s wrong with him,” said Pomfrey, guiding the two to a hospital bed. “If you will please sit up here in this bed,” she instructed Remus. “By the way, what are your names?” she asked them. “I’m Sirius Black and this here is Remus Lupin,” replied Sirius, doing the honors of introducing them both.

The Remus Lupin boy seemed rather frail and underweight. It caused Pomfrey to worry. He was much too skinny for a boy his age- it didn’t look like he was eating or being fed enough. “Right then Mr. Lupin,” said Madame Pomfrey. It then clicked in her mind. This was the werewolf boy that Dumbledore had informed her about. The name Lupin rang a bell. She had a feeling she’d be caring for young Remus often. The werewolf situation didn’t explain why he was so skinny and under fed. If anything, the hungry wolf in him would demand more food. She was going to examine further.

“Stomach issues from breakfast, you say?” Pomfrey asked. Sirius nodded. “Hmm, sometimes certain foods don’t agree with certain stomachs,” she began. She pulled out an odd device and put it onto Remus’ chest, listening to his heart beat and breathing. All seemed normal there. “And Mr. Lupin, can you tell me what you ate that’s giving you trouble?” she asked. Really through, it looked like he’d hardly eaten anything.

Remus had to play this carefully. If he named a specific food, he would just have to avoid that. And if he kept having problems, everyone would be suspicious. “I’m… not sure.”

Sirius peered curiously at Remus. He remembered that Remus oddly hadn’t eaten a lot of breakfast. It was why he found it so odd that the boy was having stomach problems despite having only a few bites. But it never crossed Sirius’ mind that Remus was lying to him. Why would he and about something so silly?

Madame Pomfrey hummed, growing more concerned. She then moved the listening device down to his abdomen just above the spot the Remus’ stomach would be. Expecting to hear gurgles of pain and indigestion, she did not. In fact, it sounded like Remus’ stomach was empty. She took off the listening device and looked at Remus inquisitively. “Mr. Lupin, honey,” she began sweetly, “Are you sure your stomach has been bothering you?” she asked suspiciously.

“It sounds like you’ve barely eaten, love,” said Pomfrey. “You look very unwell, Mr. Lupin,” she told him with concern. The issue was that for whatever reason, the boy wasn’t being fed enough and now, wasn’t eating enough now that he had lots of food available to him for whatever reason. It confused the nurse witch who had known werewolves to have ravenous appetites.

“Poor thing,” she tsked, frowning. Madame Pomfrey began to connect the dots. Remus had assured her it was his stomach bothering. It didn’t quite sound like it and in fact, it looked as if he hadn’t eaten anything- surely not enough. The gears turned in her head. Remus didn’t appear to be fed very well before Hogwarts. Perhaps it was an instance of stomach shrinkage. It was something that could happen if one got used to not being fed an adequate amount of food for so long that even eating normally made one feel sick.

She didn’t want to jump to any conclusions though. “Mr. Lupin, honey, do you mind if I do a few more tests?” she asked him. Sirius was growing concerned. Was his friend alright? “What’s the matter Madame Pomfrey?” he asked her. “Has he eaten a nasty little troll that’s bothering his insides?” he asked. “No, Mr. Black,” replied Pomfrey. “If you don’t mind Mr. Black, I do require some privacy for this,” she told him. Sirius nodded, “Uhh right. I’ll wait outside,” he said, slipping away.

Remus deflated slightly, relieved that Sirius didn’t have to see this. “What… other tests do you have to do?” He looked at the floor.

Madame Pomfrey quickly pulled the curtain around them giving them complete privacy. “Remus, I’m only here to help,” she told him. “I will be taking care of you each full moon. Dumbledore has informed me of your condition,” she whispered to him. “Now Remus, I promise it’s just you and me. I just need you to take off your robes and shirt quickly. I want to assess you,” she told him. Not only could she check for stomach shrinkage but she could see the scars and what she was working with here- how bad or not bad it was. She just hoped the boy would trust her.

“You don’t have to be self conscious about your scars Remus, but if it makes you uncomfortable then I’ll find another way,” said Madame Pomfrey. He looked like all skin and bones with his clothes and robes on. Surely she’d be able to see every one of his ribs if he took it off. She’d be able to get a better view of what was going on in there though by using a special x-ray vision spell.

Remus took his robes off. His shirt was baggy and loose, hanging low enough to show how his collarbone was sharp against his skin.

Madame Pomfrey frowned as she saw the sorry state of Remus’ body. He didn’t have any meat on his bones. With his robes off it was even more prevalent. Just as she had expected- the boy was under fed. He was unhealthily skinny. Madame Pomfrey quickly performed a special x-ray vision spell allowing her to examine the inside of Remus’ body. Her theory was correct. The boy’s stomach was shrunken to a size that was much below normal.

After making this discovery, she sighed. “You may put back on your robes, Remus,” she told him. “Your stomach appears to have shrank,” she informed him. “Tell me, do you feel sick after eating just a few bites of food?” Pomfrey asked.
