Realistic or Modern The Illustrious! Reboot (Open University RP)

AkuTheWolfOkami

The Shape-shifting Master of Goatees and Darkness
Not going to do anything fancy here because this is really a soft opening, but with this the rp has a soft opening!

The date is Monday August 15, 2022.

Football players have been in their dorms since the start of their camp at the end of July.

Today is freshman move in day, meaning upperclassmen have not moved in yet (their move in is August 19) except for RAs and those who are helping with NSO. Parents are instructed to drop them off and other students and alumni will help them move in. There will be more activities for them to participate through the week.

NSO week will include a lot of activities teaching the students about the history of the school. We will not rp those, but it's good to know coming into the school year. Freshman Athletes will join the non athletes, as this is a freshman thing. This isn't JUST for freshman, all incoming students will participate OUTSIDE of non-traditional students (though over 40, remote students, etc)

Let me know if you have questions.

In most cases it was said that people were born alone and would die the very same way. It was a depressing thought to some and downright scary to others. The majority of her time on earth had been punctuated by solitude. It had scared her at first, waking up to an empty home with nothing but her thoughts and reflections to keep her company. Or when she slept on street benches during the night with the stars acting as her only night light. With time came the ability to adapt, being alone became natural to her soon enough. Her heart no longer ached when people walked past her as when she sat outside of corner stores or when other children refused to associate with her. Being alone was a source of comfort at that point.

She wouldn’t say that she had been completely alone though. There had been a person kind enough to offer her friendship, a family that had been willing to take her in when they could. A slow smile appeared on her face, thoughts flooded with fond memories of those who cared about her. She hadn’t allowed them to take her in completely, even then she was too proud and too embarrassed to depend on someone else that much. Instead she had settled for spending time with Ximena in ways that got them in trouble.

Lyric ran a hand over her short, pink curls once she placed the last of her belongings down. It had taken longer than she’d like to get to her dorm. She had thought that she was being smart by leaving early but then she’d quickly found out that too many people had gotten the same idea. The line to Dubois was ridiculous even during the early morning and the campus itself was much worse. She had to weave her way through her fellow freshmen and their families, walking past people as they took photos and offered tearful goodbyes.

Few freshmen had made the trip to Dubois alone. Lyric was a part of the minority, the thought of either of her parents coming to see her off was laughable. Her sperm donor was still firmly behind bars with little to no chance of getting out, while she had no clue of where her mother could be. It was better that way honestly. Her mother would probably cause some sort of scene or put her hands on something that wasn’t hers. She was definitely good for it. It had been up to Lyric to get everything that she would need on campus and if there was one about her, it was that she would get shit done.

With her things put away Lyric began the process of making her bed. She would have to see about Ximena when she was finished. For all of her coolness, Lyric was happy that they’d be attending the same college. She almost wished that she’d decided to attend sooner. With the two of them reunited there was no telling what they’d go into.

Amethyst Jones. A name many people around the country had come to know for better or for worse reasons. Best of reasons being her booming music career. It's been three years now since she first entered the limelight. If you'd told nerdy little 6th grade Amy that she'd be a famous singer dating a 5 star starting quarterback she'd have laughed in your face and even told you the calculated odds of that for sure not happening. Yet here she was. Against all odds. That's not to say this was some miracle that just landed in her lap. She worked extremely hard to be here, and had scarified a lot. Her family, friends at times, and more importantly herself. She'd really lost her way at one point in her journey, and even know she's still feeling like she's finding her way back. Back to her roots and the things that made her who she truly is behind all the glitz and the glam.

Perhaps that's why Dubois really meant so much to her. It was her chance at not just a fresh start away from extra prying eyes. But a chance to reconnect with herself, and her roots. Connecting with a side of herself that in her music people could tell was there, and obviously she couldn't fake being black it was who she was even if mixed. But it was a side of her on the day to day for a long time seemed foreign to her.

But now? Now she could fully embrace all of herself. She was finally a freshman in college and out of toxic LA . LA had been her home all her life so it was kinda unbelievable that she'd finally left...even if it'll only be for four years. Well she shouldn't say it was unbelievable, or unthinkable since she'd been eyeing multiple ivy league colleges since she was in middle school. Just the way she got here makes it feel that way. Most people especially her manager questioned her on why she was even bothering. She was well on her way to being an A-list celebrity, a household name not just here in the states if she played her cards right the next few years. To most people she already had it all what would she need a degree for?

Some things you just can't shake.

Somethings that are so ingrained in you since childhood by your parents just don't fade away even when the relationship does. She'd always still had a passion for technology, and maybe in the back of her mind she knew one day she just might hang up the towel, or perhaps she'd flop and do something to get her #cancelled and that'd be the end of everything. Ever the overly cautious Amethyst needed a plan B in her back pocket. Deep rooted insecurities that at this point she wondered if they'd ever fade completely. No amount of praise even from those she loved most ever seemed to be enough to silence them forever. One of those loved ones is yet another reason she was here. Remi Michel, the one and only. Her one and only.

He was admittedly a huge deciding factor in all this. She didn't want him here and her touring all around the country or worse world and unable to see him. Sure she still would be making music and would probably still release an album and maybe still star in a music video here and there while here, but she wouldn't be gone all the time. She'd get to still see him at his games, and be there for him when he needed her. He was a rock in her life, and she wanted nothing more then to always be able to return the favor.

It was freshman move in day and it was hectic. They'd gotten there early, but early was never early enough it seemed. Her parents dropped her off as instructed. It'd been a weird and long car ride. Sure she was glad to be back on decent terms with them, but they still had a long road ahead of them to mend their broken relationship. As forgiving as Amy was, and she had forgiven them...forgetting was a whole nother story. It's hard to forget that the people who are supposed to love and support you unconditionally basically disown you for following your passion and taking a risk on a dream. One that even thought it paned out and was successful they still refuse to acknowledge...

With the help of RA's and the volunteers she was able to get all her stuff in her room. She took the time to set up the basic necessities and her bed space. Honestly for now that'd have to do. There were way too many people everywhere. Too many moving parts for her liking. She wanted to see Liv and see who she wound up bunking with, but that'd have to wait till things calmed down. Not to mention already every once and a while someone recognized her and asked for a photo. Remi was right...as usual even thought she hated it. A normal life wasn't really in the cards, even here. Though it was less then she anticipated and that gave her a little hope. Perhaps it as because she was wearing her big ass glasses instead of contacts. Hey it worked for superman! Needless to say she sent Remi a quick text that she was on her way to see him.

Apparently the Athletic dorms had different rules then the freshmen ones, so even though he couldn't come see her (which she wasn't mad about considering the chaos back there) she could go see him. She was excited since she hadn't seen him in a few weeks because he'd come to football camp at the end of July. She also figured since the guys have been here so long perhaps it wouldn't be so busy and crowded. She'd texted him again once she was downstairs that she was waiting for him. Hoping he wasn't too busy. Classes hadn't even started yet, so how busy could he be right?

Remi P. Michel

Remi felt like he didn’t have a single free moment in the last few months. It was football season, then it was a state championship, then it was his commitment announcement, then it was high school graduation, then summer football workouts with his dad and cousin and then, and then summer football camp at DuBois, and then finally fall camp at DuBois.

In the spaces of free time he spent it with Amy. He had no time for anything else with his life as a College Football athlete. The little time he had in Haiti, it was nice, Amy was there, but all he could focus on while he was there was the upcoming football season and his commitment day.

It was plastered in his mind, burned into it. He was on national tv when he made the decision. Something that he didn’t want to do, but his parents insisted. His mother mentioned that life was unpredictable, and you never know when you’d be able to celebrate something like this. So he agreed, and they set it up. He wouldn’t do it before the championship because he didn’t want to distract anyone, he didn’t want to be a distraction.

Which was good, because he didn’t know what he was going to do. He was looking at the University of Miami, The University of Georgia, The University of Alabama and USC. DuBois wasn’t even on his list until he spoke to Amy and when she said she was going. He did some research and noticed that they were building a program under their new coach and plus it was an HBCU. So he made an official visit during the school year and that’s when he met Moses King. The first 5 star to pick DuBois in its history. He was a receiver and the thought of teaming up with Remi excited him. They could turn DuBois into something great.

He loved every second he was on campus around all the peopled who looked like him and all the successful alumni that had made its way through the halls. So on his commitment day, on ESPN when everyone thought he was going to choose UGA, he spurned them for DuBois. He placed that black and white hat with the paw print on the front and placed it slowly on his head.

He declared to the world he was going to help change the perception of football at HBCUs. He was going to everything in his power to bring a championship to DuBois. He and Moses went to work on the recruiting trail, and while they didn’t get anymore 5 stars to commit, they got a few more 4 stars. Mainly offensive linemen to help protect him.

All of that was behind him though. Though he had been living on campus for the last few weeks, today was the first day for Amy on campus as the rest of the freshman and the rest of the non-fall freshman athletes. He had QB position meeting this morning so he couldn’t help Amy move in, which was probably best. Her parents weren’t necessarily fond of the trip to Haiti they took together so he’d been avoiding them.

He was going over the playbook with his center so he missed the first text that Amy sent that she was on her way. She couldn’t have visitors, not male visitors at least, but the athletes had different rules. Though they couldn’t have opposite sex visitors in their rooms yet, the common areas down stairs were free game.

He missed the second text too, and it wasn’t until the center mentioned his girlfriend texting him Remi cursed under his breath. Ten minutes had passed and he called look to his center and told him he had to go, and called Amy, “Hey I’m on the way down…” He picked up some flowers he had bought for her and moved downstairs and stopped in front of her, “Hey babes….sorry got distracted.”

Free time was non-existent. Free time was a figment of her imagination. She always tried to make herself feel better by saying some false grind culture about she can sleep when she dies. But she hated this life. She hated not having free time, because she knew if she could just focus on her music career, she wouldn’t have to be in law school right now. She would not have to be running NSO, she wouldn’t be standing here with Lisette Dupree’ telling freshmen where to go.

What? Seraphine Austin should be content with standing next to a beautiful woman, ushering in the next generation of DuBois Wolves? Well besides from the fact that the beautiful woman was Lisette who seemed to hurl insults every second she could get or even when she was being nice, backhanded compliments. She would much rather be in the studio singing her little heart out to make a new song.

She couldn’t tour this last summer because not only did she have to work as a paralegal she was on the planning committee for the entire NSO week. Well, not just on it, but running it this time. Again, she would much rather be in the studio singing her heart out.

She had originally had some elevated boots on, but when she got to her car decided for some normal black combat boots with her outfit. Might be a little hot, but beauty was pain, right? She took a deep breath as she got back to reality and handed a map to one of the students who walked by inquiring about somewhere to eat with their family that was on campus.

Though there were several restaurants in the city nearby, there were actually full restaurants on campus. A couple of sit downs and of course the fast-food options. That map would meet all of their needs for on campus food spot.

She took a slow breath, looking over to Lis,
“I bet you’ve never eaten at a single place on campus.”

Acadia Brinson absolutely loved her parents. Adored them, even. She was grateful that they'd paid for her schooling in full and helped her move in. They'd even set up a nice little account with a sizeable amount of money so she could enjoy her college experience. They were the absolute best parents in the entire world.

And she couldn't wait to fucking get rid of them.

Symone and Jaeson Brinson were alum and for some strange reason, they weren't going to let her and her brother forget it. "You guys are legacies, so make sure to take care of the Brinson name," her mother repeated for the millionth time. She'd given the same sort of speech so many times that when she looked at her brother, she mouthed word for word what her mother said. It got a chuckle or two out of him before they went back to pretending they cared. Neither one of them - especially Acadia - was interested in living in the shadows of their parents. It may have been why Cadi didn't choose the same major as her mother, despite finding psychology interesting. They were their own people and wanted to make that very clear.

After the many hugs and goodbyes and pretend tears, Alex and Acadia found themselves free of their parental units. Throwing her curls over her shoulder, she turned to her brother. "They were more annoying than usual," she said, rolling her eyes. Because Acadia was an athlete she found herself staying in the same dorm as her volleyball teammates. Her twin brother was kind enough to help her move in, though she was sure he was going to want something in return.

The suite she was put in was nicer than she expected. The shared living area was nice and spacious - perfect for breaking some rules and having a few people over. The lack of an actual kitchen was made up by the size of her room. Not too big that she felt like she just had to find stuff to fill the space, but not too small that her stuff would be a struggle to maneuver. She'd chosen the room that clearly hadn't been taken- her roommate probably in the bathroom or something. She was excited to meet her, however, unpacking all of her stuff took precedence.

The majority of the boxes Acadia had brought with her were clothes. When it came to the things she wanted to decorate her room with, those were in Amazon boxes waiting to be picked up. She had a small wagon to help transport them, handing the handle to Alex. "Yeah, so can you go down to the mail room and pick up my stuff? It says everything's been delivered." Despite Alex being the older twin Acadia had a tendency to act as if it were the opposite. "Please," she added as if it made it any better. "And then we can... Do... Brother and sister things?"

“Thirty Days,” Moses says to himself as he finishes putting on his shoes in his dorm. He and Peg had been talking and she finally told him a timetable of when they could “take lessons.” He was optimistic about the whole thing now. He had spent some time with her in DC when he flew here to see her city. Her amazement at the places and scenery he was used to making him appreciate where he was raised more. He caught himself at times during that trip gazing at her as she lit up at every monument and building, she saw. He could only think being with her was something he could get used to. Even his dad whom she met even said: “keep that one, son” as he was taking her back to the airport. He was just surprised that even after all that they still had not “taken lessons”

Meanwhile back at the school, football players were already there and at camp for the upcoming season. Moses was headed into his junior year with lofty expectations. Scouts told him he had a chance of making the league but wanted to see more films about him. He wanted to put the best foot forward so when they got a chance to get 5-star QB Remi he jumped on it. “They will name the field after what we do here bro” he told Remi on his visit. With him being the first 5-star WR coming to DuBois and Remi being the second he knew the expectations were going to be high. From the camp he thought they would meet those expectations.

He looked outside his window and saw how packed the streets were with first-year students coming in. This day was always fun people-watching. He could already peep who was going to be on the streets, who was going to drop out, and who would get arrested just by watching them. Got his keys and decided he would fight through this traffic to find him something to eat.

Logan, Moses

Nyla was super happy that she decided to first off live off campus this year. It was junior year and honestly the hype of being on campus had lost it's luster. She was ready to keep focus and finish strong. Also that she'd moved in a few days before the fish rush. It had given her solo time on the courts since only the early fall sports athletes moved in already on campus, and let her avoid or should I say savor the decently open streets. Because today? Today they were backed up to high hell. She wanted to cuss Sam out for even thinking this was a good idea.

Having her out here in this Georgia heat sweating out her perm. Lala had already hung out with her friend logan the day she'd unpacked herself which was fun and a nice welcome back, so of course it was Sam's turn. She made a mental note to hit up Moses at some point as well. What? She had all year to be around and hang with the girls on the team not to mention the endless practices. Lord knows she doesn't have any female friends outside of the team, so guys were where it's at. This was nothing new or special to her. This is the way things had been since she was in middle school.

She really didn't have a mindset to change it either. She was a bro and proud of it. People could think what they wanted since everyone who knew her knew how she was and that was good enough for her. She had no interest in watering herself down or accepting fake friends just for the sake of appearances.

None of that mattered no of course. Her mind was just roaming because she was stuck in this damn traffic heading onto campus. Why was she doing something so insane on today of all days? Because while she had the bright idea to move in on a different day her dear friend Sam didn't. Or at least asked for help today of all days for her to swing by since he was also going to be busy being an RA and all.

Truth be told she'd forgotten today was their move in day till she hit the traffic and it was far too late. It'd take her just as long to get back as it would to reach him, and at least this way she could convince him to owe her dinner or something as reparations.

Not to mention if left to his own devices he'd still be unpacking all the way till midterms and she can't be having her friend looking like that. What if he had company over and they noticed he still had boxes everywhere? Not a good long and she's too good of a friend to let him go down like that. She grabbed a snack for the both of them while on the way to his place, but damn near ate all her portion waiting in traffic.

Nyla finally parked and reached his dorm room through the flock of freshman. She knocked on his door in a playful rhythmic fashion, "Yooo, I'm here!" hoping he was actually inside his room and not off helping someone.

Amy was beginning to think that she should've just called instead of sending text messages. Her phone feeling dry as she sat waiting in the athletic boys common room. Sure technically a lot of time hadn't gone by, but it felt like it. She almost pressed the call button at the five minuet mark and no response...but then it dawned on her. What if he was busy? She didn't want to interrupt him. With that in mind she put her phone back down and just continued to wait.

ten minuets went by and she told herself she'd give it five more. If he still didn't respond she'd go for a walk or something on her own. The last thing she needed was her first impression to anyone around here to be she was some weird freshman groupie just sitting around the athletic dorms. She surely didn't want to go back to the chaos that was her dorm, so that didn't leave many other options then to solo explore the campus.

Luckily that's when her phone finally rang. Her face lit up seeing it was him admitting to being on his way. It didn't take much longer after that for him to show up and with flowers none the less. Ever the romantic and she loved him for it. She smiled brightly at him as he came into sight standing up to wrap her arms around him in a tight embrace. She'd missed him, and honestly didn't care if the flowers had gotten squished a bit. She pulled back far enough to smell them at least and acknowledge them. They were beautiful, but weren't her focus right now.

"Thanks babe, and it's ok I understand." She replied simply with a shrug, "You're here now though so that's what counts." She chimed in a chipper tone because late was much better then never in this case.

Plus distracted was kinda just the name of the game lately. She didn't blame him or anything, it's just how things were right now. He had ALOT going on with him and honestly she didn't see it calming down anytime soon. That's why times like these were so important to her. That's why being physically here for him meant so much to her because at some point their lives would both get even more hectic then this if they kept on their current path and there's be longer stretches' of time they wouldn't be able to see each other, or spend time together. She knew in the back of here head she needed to be thankful for the now.

"So what would you like to do?" she asked curiously knowing this is as far as she could go here.

Dubois was supposed to be a fresh start. A place where you can become who you wanted to be or figure it out. To embrace your creativity and learn new skills to use out in the adult world. These were the things her moms kept telling her ever since her acceptance to the HBCU. So why didn't she feel excited to start? In fact, she felt like she wanted to throw the fuck up. There were so many people. Cars everywhere. Girls and guys alike moving their stuff in; one girl was sitting on the floor in the hall crying because she'd gotten the roommate from Hell! What was supposed to be an amazing day was slowly turning out to be the opposite. Moving in was stressful, actually, so why paint it as something else?

Her parents had actually come with her to help carry everything inside. Since Remi and Amy were busy, she couldn't count on them to help. And as much as she loved her moms she, like most freshmen, couldn't wait to get rid of them. They were cool, untraditional parents, sure, but they were also extra as hell. One didn't like the paint color for the hall and dorms and the other didn't like the floor. They complained about the size of the beds and then complained about the closet space. It wasn't until one sat on Ahlivia's bed that she'd finally snapped and told them they could leave. She'd left her room to see them out, making it to the stairs when one of them forget their purse.

Ahlivia walked into the room to see that her roommate was there- making up her bed. She'd seen that most of her stuff was there and though she was excited to finally meet the person she was sharing a room with, she was also anxious. What if they didn't like each other? What if she turned out to be the roommate from Hell? Then she'd end up in the hall crying like that one girl. The chatter in her brain was just too much. Noticing such, Tasha spoke for her and introduced Ahlivia. "Liv's roommate!" She said excitedly, snapping Ahlivia back down to Earth. "Tasha," she started, only to have her mother ignore her. "I absolutely LOVE this whole thing you've got goin' on. Black alt girl isn't recognized enough and you are pulling it off," she complimented. Though there was a lot more she wanted to say, Ahlivia had managed to push her out and force her to leave.

After they said their goodbyes, Liv turned to Lyric with an embarrassed look on her face. "I am so sorry. Tasha can be a bit much sometimes, but she really does mean well. And she wasn't wrong, either! You're pulling off the Alt-black girl better than a lot of people. Better than most, actually, which I think is saying a lot because there's so few of them, to begin with," she paused. "And I'm rambling, sorry. I'm- I'm Ahlivia. Your roommate, but that was already clear wasn't it?" She was nervous and when Ahlivia got nervous she rambled. It didn't help that Lyric absolutely intimidated the shit out of her and this was just their first meeting. "I would've done the whole 'meet your roommate' thing on the website but I was in Cairo at the time... Um, what's your name?"

It was true that Lisette was born and raised in New Iberia, a town where the community was close and the people all southern hospitality and manners. There were few fond memories that she held there. The time spent with cousins, picking honeysuckle and playing hide and seek on their family’s vast land, was near and dear to her heart. But there was also an emptiness that shaped her childhood, made her who she was. A cold gaze and striking hand that stripped her of the warmth that her father’s side of the family seemed to have. Her highschool graduation was freedom to her. It felt as though she could finally exhale after holding her breath for so long.

Dubois symbolized many things for her. It was a new start in her life, a life where she could live as she wanted. There were no shrewd eyes watching her, searching for a single imperfection. Lisette had arrived, sure of herself and her plans for the future. She’d clawed her way to the top, earned her spot on the social hierarchy of the school. Her reputation was carefully crafted by sweet smiles and southern drawl. To her, she was in a home of her own making.

There had been no group more welcoming than her sorority. Alpha Kappa Alpha had welcomed Lisette like she was some long lost sister. It was a perfect place for her honestly, their goals and aspirations were close to her own. She would even go as far as to label them as the best. They set a standard on campus, one that some could only dream of achieving. It was due to the reputation that Lisette had agreed to welcome and help the new students of Dubois. While she refused to do any heavy lifting, she had offered to help in a way that worked for her best.

It was routine now, smiling at freshmen and their families while handing out maps and giving a little rundown of the campus. Lisette took a glance at her companion for the day, resisting the urge to smirk in amusement. Her intentions weren’t exactly innocent. Lisette liked to see her fellow AKA all nervous and worried, especially when she didn’t do anything to ease said nerves. Lisette smiled at other freshmen as they walked past before turning her attention to Saruh.

Lisette raised a single arched eyebrow. “There’s nothing worth eating on campus, so no I haven’t.” Fast food was never something that she had much as a child. Everything that she had grown up eating had been home cooked. Their meat was sourced straight from their own animals and vegetables grown on their own land. “ You seem jittery. Don’t worry you’re doing far better than I thought you would.”

Peg Walker
3af211c6c198fd8bb5574946269851bb.jpg
Moving out was always the worst part of school, at least, until Peggy Jean remembered what moving in was like. As a habitual person, moving in a week prior to classes was her norm. However, as she sat in her truck stuck in traffic, she wished she had reconsidered the necessity to move in today as she only now recalled that it was freshman move in day. The only thing that helped the matter somewhat was that she was off campus this year, so she could avoid some of the main roads that led through it.

Speaking of "off campus", she had begun pondering her future living arrangements. Should she stay here while she finished her degree? That's what most people did, right? But then people usually ended up living where they settled for school. Georgia wasn't a long drive at all from Tennessee, but the thought of being that far from her mother and her childhood home all the time gave her some anxiety. And while her dad and brother were also important to her, she knew she couldn't hold L.W. back, and she was still patching up her relationship with her dad. But momma? Momma would always be in the same place. She sighed. It was too much to think about right now...

Then, there was Moses and...whatever you called what they had going on. If she were being honest with herself, sometimes it confused her - being together, but not really being together. Although she did really like him, and he seemed to like her, perhaps it was most appropriate to just call them "close friends." That would make the trip to DC to spend time with him and meeting his dad make more sense. However, that couldn't explain the kisses and the intimacy, or, well, the intended intimacy. When she met him last year, she wouldn't have expected their friendship to make it this far, or even that she'd be considering giving herself to him, yet here they were. He was gentlemanly; he didn't press her about the issue, at least, not until recently when he began sliding the suggestion into little pockets of conversation. Now, she had given him a timeline, but she still wasn't sure if that's what she wanted. The thought of sharing that with him was both electrifying and nerve-wracking. She just wanted to make sure this was right... But D-Day was a month out (no pun intended), so she'd certainly bought herself time.

Her buzzing thoughts carried her through the remainder of her trip until she reached the apartment complex. She parked as closely as she could to the front of the door she'd be calling home for the year and reached to turn down Luke Bryan on the radio. 'Now, where is that phone...?' She looked around her seat and in the adjacent seat until she spotted the device resting in an open compartment of the dash and plugged up to charge. She rolled her eyes at herself then picked it up, briefly scrolling through notifications and texts. One text caused her to frown, but she would worry about it later. Right now, she just needed to start getting this stuff unloaded, so she went to her favorite contacts then pressed call. She listened eagerly as the phone rang until someone finally picked up. "Hi, Mo... I just pulled in. Are you able to come help me move my stuff in?"

The crowd moving in to the campus reminded him of downtown Pretoria. There seemed to be twice as many people out for every car on the street and they were all hustling and bustling, and filling the area with laughs, shouts, and honking horns. It made him all the more grateful that he didn't have to be stuck in that mess; thank goodness for soccer. Although, his mother had stopped by his dorm to bring him a few more things and coo over her maturing son...

"Awww, Ma. It's just school. This is college. It's not like I'm getting married..."

Shaun stood in front of his mother as she adjusted his clothes and primped his appearance. "Oh, I know, mi cielito, but I'm just so proud of you. It's such a good school and you're growing up so much." He had to stop himself from rolling his eyes and instead brushed a hand back through his hair. He couldn't help thinking that she had invalidated her praise; he was only accepted because she worked here. At least, that's what he imagined.

However, he'd already decided that regardless of the reason he was here, he'd put his best foot forward and take full advantage of the opportunity.

"Okay, Ma. That's everything, right?" He glanced back at his side of the room. While he was accustomed to living with others, the smaller space was something he still had to get used to. He turned back to his mother, prompting her onward before she could answer, subtly shooing her away. "Go rest. You don't get a lot of time to yourself, so go enjoy it while you can. If I think of anything else I need, I'll come pick it up from the apartment." He thoroughly appreciated his mother, but no college freshman wanted to be seen with their parents, and especially not with a parent who worked on campus. He didn't need anyone knowing their association.

With a hug and a kiss to his cheeks, his mother finally took her leave. He gingerly shut the door behind her and sighed in relief. He moved to unpack the few new boxes she had brought up as he pondered what the school year would look like. Excitement - but mostly anxiety - filled him.

Of course, she had never had anything on campus. Lisette was too good for anything that would be on DuBois. Though they did have a “Dietary Café” which most of the athletes ate it that provided farm to table options, it probably still would never be up to par for her. There was a few nice restaurants back in downtown Rome that would have met her standards, but on campus? Nope.

“ You seem jittery. Don’t worry you’re doing far better than I thought you would.”

Of course, she would do another backhanded compliment. That was all she got from her companion that stood with her. For all of the accomplishments that Saruh had, it seemed like Lisette always mentioned low expectations for her. If she really thought that lowly of Saruh? She wasn’t sure how genuine it was, but if someone says something enough you have to take their word for it.

Saruh was very accomplished though. Graduated high school at 14, and had her AA in paralegal studies by 16 and was a paralegal for a couple of years before coming to DuBois and getting her Pysch BA at 20.

She wasn’t wrong though about her jitters. She had a lot riding on the success of everything this first week. She could get her mother off her back for a while if everything went well and she could get back to music. She had already missed the tour this summer, though felt some comfort knowing Zay missed it too.

She took a slow sigh before essentially speaking through her teeth,
“You know it wouldn’t kill you to just admit you love me.”

She could only hope that the hyper one wasn’t who she’d be sharing her room with. Lyric didn’t know how long she would last if that was the case. It was something about overly cheerful people that annoyed her. Weird, yes, but it was how she felt. With her task interrupted, she took the time to look over the two women. Black eyes trailed over them slowly. There was nothing behind them when she locked eyes with the other one. Lyric remained silent throughout the ordeal. The silence stretched, filling the room once the two of them were alone.

It was clear that her roommate, Ahlivia, was nervous. It was something that Lyric was used to. She’d even go as far as to say she liked it that way, being unapproachable meant that people wouldn’t bother her. Though, if she stayed silent she was sure that Ahlivia would have a heart attack. She had said something about alt black girls. For her sake Lyric would take it as a compliment. “Thanks…” She drawled, sounding as bored as ever. Again she went back to making her bed, stuffing a pillow into a pillowcase. Oh right, she’d been asked a question. Lyric looked up once again. “It’s Lyric…what they ain’t got internet in Cairo? Or was it not important enough for you to do?”

Lyric walked around her bed until she was on the side facing Ahlivia’s own bed. She leaned against hers, crossing her arms over her chest. “Let me run things down to you real quick. I’ll stay out of your way and you stay out of mine. Whatever buddy buddy type of relationship that you have going on in your mind, dead it right now.” She had always been told that her mouth would get her in trouble and even though it had many times, Lyric didn’t change. “If you having company over, let me know. If you snore, don’t. Don’t touch my shit and stay out of my business. Do all that and things will be fine.”

As he started looking for his keys, he felt his phone ringing and saw it was Peggy. Moses smiled as he picked up the phone and immediately heard Peggy’s voice.
"Hi, Mo... I just pulled in. Are you able to come help me move my stuff in?"
She was…. cute. Knowing Moses would love to help her and would give him a chance to scope out the place he would spend a lot of time at. With the restrictions at the athletic dorms Moses knew he would have to spend time with Peg outside of that place. “Hey Peg… I should be able to come through. I was going to get some food. Want anything?” Moses grabbed his keys to his Jeep and headed to grab food and to her house.
He vibe to some JID as he drove to the food spot and picked up something for him and Peg. He knew she would have a bunch of stuff for him to move around with yet, he did not mind because it was just an excuse to hang out with her. He had grown fond of the girl. Even with her not going all the way with him.
He parked at her apartment and texted her “outside with food and kisses” he smirks thinking he that was a clever way to say he wanted to kiss her. He had not seen her since she visited DC. With the football season soon approaching he knew that it would take most of his time, then there was school. So, any time he had with Peg had to be meaningful. He was not a one-woman guy, yet he really enjoyed this one woman especially with the 30-day promise coming soon. See Moses knew being big man on campus with football girls would flock to him, yet he knew Peg would not like that, so he made sure he stayed low for the sake of Peg’s emotions.

As she opened yet another suitcase to pack her drawers, Orisha wondered if she'd accidentally taken someone else's luggage at the airport. She was sure she hadn't bought much with her. So much of herself was still back in her tiny room back home in Australia. Every piece of clothing or decoration she added to her room made her feel further away from home. She'd thought bringing her things from home would chase some of the homesickness away, but she only found herself aching more with each picture frame she pulled from her suitcase.

When her eyes began to sting with new tears, she decided it was time for a break. She cracked her door open and turned on her desk fan. The heat was familiar, at least. She picked up her ukelele and began to strum at the strings to calm her nerves mindlessly. She'd only gotten a few chords in when her phone began to buzz. So much so that it almost fell off the desk.

When she picks it up, her eyes bulge at the number of notifications on her screen from the school group chat. She'd introduced herself at the very least but found hand't worked up the nerve to keep talking.

She was content with looking and learning until things started to get out of hand. In the blink of an eye, the chat was aflame, with insults and hostility seemingly coming from nowhere. After a brief intervention from a moderator, things calmed down. She frowned as she re-read the messages, full of pity for the girl they were directed at.

She stood and began to pace as a familiar tightness in her chest and heaviness in her stomach arose. She knew what it was like to be on the other end of a group chat's wrath. Orisha wrings her hands before picking up her phone to check on the other girl before promptly tossing her phone onto the bed and pacing some more. When she hears the notification ping, she expects to get the same response she's gotten used to.

That she's sticking her nose where it doesn't belong or crowding, it's a pleasant surprise when the girl thanks her, and even more so when they begin talking, and she says she'll help her move. Acadia is her name. Orisha smiles to herself as she settles back down on the bed, continuing to talk in the chat where she meets another student named Zachary, One who understands the uphill euphoria of trying to connect with a community you had never felt at home with.

Maybe adjusting wouldn't be so hard after all.

As Moses agreed to help her, Peg's lips immediately spread into a grin. "Thank you!" She beamed and made a kiss sound into the phone. "I'll eat whatever you bring." She believed that by now he at least had an idea of what she liked, but even if not, she wouldn't complain. She needed to try new things anyway. "See you soon." With that, she hung up.

Peg stood in the center of the living room with her hands on her hips and looked around the apartment in thought. The place came furnished with the basics, so she was grateful not to have to worry about that much. The few boxes she had brought in herself were scattered in different corners between the living and dining rooms and she sighed at the thought of more piling up. It was probably a good idea to use this extra time to start unpacking.

In the midst of putting her things away, the thought seemed to hit her like a train: she was going to see Moses for the first time since early summer.

… And she looked like this?!

She looked like she'd been on a road trip. Her natural waves were disheveled, a light dew of sweat laced her skin from all the activity, and she wore what she felt to be "not enough" makeup… Of course, he'd seen her in a similar fashion before, but that wasn't after over a month of not seeing her at all. She needed to be more presentable. She had to check the time…

Just as she pulled her cellphone from the back pocket of her jean shorts, she heard the sharp ding of a text coming through. Her eyes widened. She then looked at the screen only to curse almost as starkly as her phone. "Shit!" Well, she might as well relax…

Her hazel eyes closed and she took in a deep breath before gently exhaling. She then reread the text and couldn't help the curve of her lips into a soft smile and subtle heat of a blush that tinted her cheeks. It was confirmation to herself that she liked him too much. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but it was dangerous. She didn't want those feelings to progress and ruin their dynamic - one of the main reasons she didn't push as hard as she probably should for a title. It was the best way to keep him from running away.

She eagerly went to open the door and immediately spotted his car. She stood on the porch and waved bouncily. She couldn't wait to hug him… and share those kisses, of course.

Moses could see Peg on her porch waving to him as he sat in his car. Her joyful greeting made him smirk. She was so adorable to him, and he really liked her. She also was dressed down which made sense since she was moving. He got his keys and got out of the car. He immediately waved at her and smiled.

“Hey sweetheart I’m at your service,” he said playfully as he approached her. As he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her in. He had not seen Peg since the summer and hugging her reminded him how much he liked her. He kissed her then kissed her forehead. He gazed into her beautiful eyes and just blurted out, “wow you are beautiful” Moses typically was not this affectionate with girls he tried to keep it as least number of emotions as possible.

“Well, what’s first?” He said looking at the inside of her place. Moses instantly thought “oh wait the food is in the car” he was so eager to see Peg he forgot about the food.

He went back to the car to grab the food, picking this wing joint next to campus he would stop by for a late-night snack. Walking back, he said, “I hope you like wings and fries because that’s what I got” He walked into the house and sat the food down ready to dig in.

Lisette cut her eyes at Saruh, a smug smile on her face. From the way the other woman spoke it was obvious that she was getting on her nerves. Good, messing with Saruh happened to be her favorite pastime. Lisette lived for provoking her enough to get a reaction out of her. Her behavior could be seen as malicious. There were more than a few people who didn’t think that she liked Saruh, including Saruh herself. It couldn’t be farther from the truth but Lisette was never someone who admitted how she felt openly. “No, I definitely would kill me. The sentence itself would be poison on my tongue and it’d do me in then and there.” Her face scrunched up, as if she’d tasted or ate something bad.

For all of the praises that were sung about Lisette and how helpful she was, she was quickly growing tired of helping the freshmen. Of course, the polite smile didn’t leave her face. Her thoughts were a completely different matter though. She found herself mentally sneering at a freshman who had not so subtly tried to chat her up. Her words were far gentler than what she was thinking. “It’s about time we switch out right? Well, it’s about time for me. I’m sure some of the other sorors would be eager to help.” Lisette flipped her hair, placing a hand on her hip. “Your food talk has gotten me hungry and I’m in the mood for something Japanese.” She could definitely wait a little more before eating but she always made sure to complain in Saruh’s presence, just to mess with her more. “I mean, things might fall apart without me here but I’m sure that you’ll manage.”

Alex & Kinni

Alex hated that he was helping his sister move in. Not because he hated helping her, but because she had already moved in before with the rest of the volleyball athletes. So everything he was helping her with just unnecessary. He wanted to really just drop the things off and dip when she turned her back. He wasn’t sure if he could get away it, but he definitely thought about trying it.

He was contemplating all of this until he heard her ask him to go pick up her deliveries. It was less of a request and more of a command as he quirked a brow as he stared down at her from his towering position. What was he, a bell boy? He was going to reject but when she added the please he took the handle and sucked the air between his teeth, ”Fine.”

She added something about doing brother sister activities, but he wasn’t exactly sure what that consisted of for them. They would watch movies together back home and laugh at different people on social media. She’d run through lines with him for his acting, and when he could he’d help her with her volleyball, but what would their relationship look like at school?

Alex shrugged his shoulders a bit and without any further words moved to go take care of the task. At the same time Kinni had been moving through the hall pass the tall individual when she didn’t even notice. She was stuck in her own world with her AirPod pros in and honestly she wouldn’t have behaved any different if she even did notice him. The Brinsons were not her favorite people. Hell, anyone who got ahead on their name was not her favorite.

She could admit that Alex was probably as good as advertised in basketball, and Acadia was probably as smart as they come, but it was the treatment they got for not doing anything. Kinni wasn’t sour about not being named captain, she didn’t want it and had withdrew herself from consideration, same as with cheerleading. She had too much going on in her life to add the responsibility of being a captain. In fact, though she and the volleyball coach had an understanding and cheerleading came first (meaning sometimes she would miss volleyball games where they had to travel for football or if it was a time conflict), she was considering dropping it altogether. So there was no personal slight she felt from Acadia being named captain.

It wasn’t like she took it from her. It was just the young woman. The short woman. Had not played a single game in her collegiate career and yet was named captain? It wasn’t as if she was the world’s top volleyball player, she was solid, but not being named captain solid as a freshman. So why was she named captain other than her name? Remi being a freshman and named captain? Fine. He’s the starting qb and the highest rated recruit to come to DuBois. Hell if Alex was named captain? It would still be weird, but she could swallow it. He was the number one recruit in his class and though when it came to basketball, DuBois got top recruits like hotcakes, she could still understand it.

Acadia though? The Princess was just given things she didn’t earn. She groaned as she moved into the room when she noticed that Acadia was also there. She moved off to the door to get into her room and took a gentle sigh. She was moving MORE stuff in? Kinni had made an agreement with her volleyball coach that she would stay in the dorm on the nights before the game and adhere to curfew, along with staying in the dorm on game day. It was supposed to build comradery with her teammates. She was deeply regretting that stance now.

She moved to the shared kitchen area from her room pulled out a cutting board, and started to pull tuna and salmon from the fridge that she had freshly bought this morning from the local farmer’s market. She took her extremely sharp knife from its sheath and began to cube the fish. She had also previously washed some rice and once she finished cubing the fish she put it in the rice cooker and started to get that set up. A high protein poke bowl would do her justice before the game later.

Remi ran his hand through his hair as he watched Amy speak. She was just happy to be with him and it kind of made him feel bad. She was always so nice and understanding, and yet he always seemed to take it for granted. He tried but…

There was a moment he took to ponder on what she asked, ”We could walk the campus? While there’s a lot of commotion …we should be able to go relatively unnoticed.”
____
"You know I was just thinking about that." She hummed. Mind you it crossed her mind as a solo mission, but things were usually more fun with a buddy and who better right? She took his hand in her, "How much time do we have?" She asked curiously.

As much as she'd like to just go off with him and spend the rest of the day and probably into the night just talking and hanging out with him…she's learned that's not usually in the cards for them. Especially now…So she tried not to let it show.
____
He thought about her question. How much time did they have? It was officially freshman move in day and though the football players were already moved in a lot had been helping with the freshmen move. Especially the true freshmen players. So besides some film sessions and position meetings earlier in the morning, Everything Remi had been doing was extra. He wanted to be at the top and take every chance he could.

He said he would meet with Mick later to put in some extra work and Moses would come to. So there wasn’t really a choice about it, it was something he’d have to do since he said it. It was extra and not mandatory which means he chose that over time with Amy. Still that was hours off, “Uh I got something to do with Mick later but that’s much later, so no rush let’s just enjoy.”
____
Amy nodded figuring as much before he even opened his mouth. She chose not to say anything more on it since there was no point in what? Complaining? Nope. There was no point in spoiling what little time they had.

She started walking with him outside just really soaking in everything around them, "Can you believe it? It's so nice to finally BE here you know?" She smiled softly. "Do you like your roommates?" She asked curiously since she wanted to catch up as much as possible. "Excited for the carnival?"
____
“My roommates are just Mick….well and Moses, but Moses is the one who recruited me to come here so it’s not really a big deal…” he said trailing off for a bit. The roommate situation was cool, it provided the path of least resistance. He was already cool with them both so, ”What about you? How are your roommates? And did you want to spend time at the carnival?”
____
"Well at least then you know you get along." She hummed. She didn't know Mick all that well and she definitely didn't really know Moses. "Uh I don't know. I kinda just dropped off my stuff, set up my bed and left. She wasn't there yet." She shrugged. She figured she'd cross that bridge once she got there. "Of course! But I mean I get it if you wanna hang out with other people too. There were some nice people in the du-chat I could hang with." She added just in case he did want to not be connected at the hip to her. Though…not gonna lie she kinda assumed it was a given if he was going to go that he'd spend it with her. Guess not.
____
“So you don’t know who you’re paired with…you know her name at least?” he inquired with a raise brow, before shaking his head. Of course she knew the other person’s name, it was more so just small talk he was making. But, why? It was his girlfriend, why was he making small talk?

“I didn’t mean it like that..” Remi said with a chuckle as they walked with each other. He closed his eyes and grabbed her hand, “I just wanted to make sure we were on one accord. I want to spend all my time with you.”
____
"Oh well yah. Lyric I believe. Which is so pretty!" She felt like she was gushing over someone she didn't even know. But come on now how perfect was a name like that? Like Ariel naming her daughter Melody, it just fit.

Amy playfully pouted a bit puffing up one side of her cheek at his chuckle. As he took her hand in his, she interlocked their fingers staying in step with him. "Oh do you now?" She mused a bit, "Sure about that? Not gonna get stir crazy with just lil ole me all day?" She teased jokingly.

Sure she had her insecurities, but him getting bored of her for randoms wasn't one. Nope. But for people he actually knew?...That might be another story.
____
He thought about that name for a bit. Lyric did seem like a cool name, but Remi wasn’t exactly into names like that. No. He was into tradition and legacy. He wouldn’t do a Jr, but he’d probably name his son something like Jean Remi Michel. Or Sony Remi Michel. He wondered if Amy would let him name their daughter Michelle Michel. Probably not. Oh wow, was he thinking about their family together?

“I’ll never get tired of lil ole you babe…” he said with a chuckle before looking around them noticing how busy it was. He pondered for a second, “Want to walk around the pond?”
____
She didn't expect any less of a reply, but it still made her cheeks warm hearing it. Her smile brightened at the suggestion of going someplace a little less hectic. She was going to be so glad once all the extra people weren't on campus anymore then she could get used to how things would be.

"Yah, great idea babe!" She chimed. She let him lead the way assuming he had a bit better grasp on where things were around here then her since he's been here longer. "If it's pretty we should have a picnic date one day." She hummed a bit as they made their way to the pond, "You talked to Liv yet?" she asked curiously.

So when she agreed that was exactly where he led her.

There was a sort of obligation that Ramona felt whenever Debuois would reach out to her. In the beginning she had considered it something of an honor. The fact that the university had admired her skills enough to reach out to her had inflated her ego the tiniest bit. She hadn’t been a fool though, Romona needed something in return for her services. She rarely worked for free and she wasn’t going to start just bet she happened to attend Dubois. They had settled for some networking in return for her work. With them crediting her and recommending her, her cliente had expanded. Romana was living comfortably and with enough money to send some back home. A small smile appeared on her face, thinking of her mother and brother. Charity could breathe a little easier now that Ramona had hired an aid for her brother.

Peering at the camera in her hands, Ramona looked through the different photos that she had taken. Bright smiles were featured in the majority of the photos, faces both new and old clearly excited to be on campus. At one point she had been in their position. Ramona had been relatively calm though. The thought of moving away had upset her but she had always been pretty independent. Her time at Dubois had been…interesting so far. There had been some drama but she was determined to leave it all behind her.

A tap on her shoulder had her turning around. The family in front of her politely asked if they could get their picture taken. Glancing down at the small boy seated in a wheelchair she couldn’t help but smile affectionately. Ramona was all too happy to take a photo of them and said as much. A few pictures were snapped, she declined the tip that they’d attempted to give her and instead told them to enjoy the carnival. Ramona looked at the picture for a moment before she returned to snapping pictures of the other activities.

Joy (Kalea)

Kinni could vividly remember the carnival her first year. Well, it wasn’t as if it was terribly long ago. Afterall, she wasn’t even two years older than her younger sister. It was just about a year ago she was getting ready to walk down to the gym with her volleyball teammate’s last name on it.

This time it wasn’t about her. It was about her baby sister, and as much as a spoiled brat that she couldn’t stand Joy was, she was still her Joy. She’d never admit to her unless one of them was about to die, but that was her baby. That’s why she continued to baby her despite her knowing that it was contributing to her spoiled brat behavior.

There was a video of her as a two-year-old standing over few months old little sister saying that she would take care of her no matter what. As vicious as Kinni was, she was family first. She would die for her little sister.

Which is why she didn’t hesitate when Joy asked her to spice up her Carnival shirt and to help with her make up. So as soon as the younger sibling received her shirt, Kinni dropped by and picked it up before running back to her apartment. She had already designed her some nice pants to match with it, before hitting her sewing machine and getting down with the shirt making it into a much more fashionable top. When she was satisfied with her work, she was back at Joys dorm room with what looked to be a construction worker’s tool box. It wasn’t though. It was Kinni’s make up box.

Kinni was ever the talented girl. When she started fashion design, she made sure to get into make-up too. It would help her with being able to get the look she wanted to convey for her clothes when someone (or herself modeled them. If she was going to be the best, she wanted to know every step in the process.

So there she was sitting in front of her sister putting on the last touches of make up after the younger Palakiko sister had already gotten dressed.

“Aurite. Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-hoooo. You look good. I did a good job,” Kinni said mostly to herself, as she started to pack up all of the equipment she had brought over. She was almost done packing when she looked over her shoulder to her sister, “I put setting spray on too so you should be good for the night.

“This is DuBois, E komo Mai.”
