karim chibale | the new criminal
june 4, 2018
With exam season coming to a close and a warm, freeing summer just on the horizon, it is no surprise that the Denver International Airport is immensely crowded. Families huddle together and push to the crowds on their way to a tropical getaway while individuals weave through with such speed and agility that they are hardly noticed among the herd of people. Young adults exit the gates. looking around for their families anxiously awaiting their return from far away universities and colleges. Even at such an early hour, the airport is buzzing with activity. Summer is an interesting and special time indeed.
Outside, two large buses pull up to a set of large glass doors.
The first bus is filled with twenty high school students, both sleepy and oddly awake all at the same time, and six chaperoning teachers from a local private school, Melrose Private Secondary School. Most of these kids are wealthy and they're the best of the best, the cream of the crop. They're here to participate on a volunteer trip to Somalia. Their objective is to use their diverse and highly specialized skills to better the lives of those who are less fortunate than they are.
The second bus is much less comfortable. The clanking of metal and the protesting groans of tired beings are almost as loud as the idling engine. There are teenagers of a different sort on this bus. All fifteen youths are criminal offenders from a small prison and rehabilitation center from downtown Denver. Their crimes range from car theft to assault but all have been deemed safe for this trial trip. They are to join the prestigious Melrose students on their humanitarian aid trip to Somalia. They are to support the students and use the time in Somalia to work hard and prove that they are good people deserving of their freedom. If they are wellbehaved and helpful, their sentences will be reduced or ended when they return to the United States.
Neither group is exactly thrilled to be working with the other. Why would some of the best kids in Denver want to be working with the grimy criminal filth of the city and why would the antagonized criminals want to live and act in the shadows of a bunch of rich brown-nosers for an entire summer? However, everyone on the trip knows the stipulations: there is to be no fighting or arguing, only collaboration and helping. Whoever thought that was going to work is just plain stupid.
All the teens are put through the security checks to get onto the plane. Surprisingly, everything seemed to go off without a hitch. Now at 4:28am on June 4, 2018, the two groups are seated in the small 60 passenger plane that will be taking them to Somalia. The students sit on the left side of the plane among their friends. Meanwhile, the criminals sit on the right side with their hands still shackled in shiny silver handcuffs. Ten minutes until takeoff.
