Cameron watched Nate, and heard his mother's voice. He smiled at him, hearing his words and he gave him a big hug before he let go a few minutes later. "I can't wait to play both! Bye Nate! I'll see you soon!" Cameron called as he watched his bestest friend leave again. Cameron didn't realize it, but it would be a whole three years before he saw Nathaniel again. He spend the next year on his own, and in that time his brother was shipped off to Denver with his partner and Cameron was well and truly alone.

The next two years were so slow for him, until about half way through the second year when he met Gaige. The other teen had come from Las Vegas with his family. He was a year older than Cameron and he met when his parents enrolled him into the Firefly training program. He was still in the same place he'd always lived, but this time he had Gaige with him. Cameron thought about his friend often, and he wondered if he'd ever actually get to see Nate again. Cameron missed his best friend and while he had Gaige now to hang out with, it wasn't the same.

Today, the Firefly training was cancelled as the trainers were sent to help patrols with a nasty horde that had grown way to close to the zone for comfort. Cameron was hanging out in that same room with Gaige, the two of them playing war. His parents told him that they'd be having their meeting today and Cameron wondered if he'd finally see his best friend again.​

“Pick it up, Nate! We got places to be!” The big bellowy laugh of Benjamin Dixon resounded so far and wide that Nate was pretty sure literally everyone could hear him. If they weren’t in a place that was actively with them, they would have been found out by everyone. There was never any stealth with this guy. Nate looked up from the book that he was reading as they walked. He had fallen behind by a lot. A very much lot. His mama, Ben, and Maximillian Parina were a good fifteen feet ahead of him. He quickly shoved the book to the side and ran to catch up.

Three years. It had been three years since they were last here. Nate hag begged and begged for his mama to bring them back here, and she always said that they would go when it was time. Well, it was time! He was feeling the serious jitters. Why? He wanted to see Cameron for so long. He loved the games they played. He loved how nice it was to be with him. Frankly, it never left him that they were going to be family. He wanted to be family. It was hard to do that when they weren’t ever together.

“Nathaniel.” His attention was drawn to his mother. She stopped at a door. “You know where to go. I am busy. Do not cause trouble. Max.” She gently smiled. “Please entice them to behave. Benjamin. Do not even think about leaving that room. I do not care that you are all grown or whatever you think. It is imperative that you stay here where I know where you are. It is incredibly dangerous outside these walls right now.” She turned and walked into the room leaving the three of them in the hall. There was only one other thing to do. He opened the door to the room he hadn’t been in three years.​

Cameron grinned and laughed as he slapped his card down. "Ha! I win again!" He said, his voice had dropped a little bit as he hit fifteen, and it was a little deeper. His hair had grown and gotten shaggier and his body was a little more fit and lean than the lanky he'd been before. Gaige narrowed his eyes and crossed his arms over his chest, pouting slightly. "That's not fair! You cheated!" He said, sticking his tongue out. "How in the world could I have cheated?" Cam asked before his attention was drawn to the door. When it opened and revealed his best friend, any game was forgotten as he ran to the door. "Nathaniel!" He said happily, giving his best friend a big hug before he noticed the other two with him. After a moment, he pulled away and looked at them. "Is this Max and Ben?"​

Three years had passed between them and it felt like nothing. Well, except for the part where Nate had glasses now. They all got tired of him being blin and took some when they found ones that worked. The moment Cameron said his name, all of his fears and anxieties disappeared. Nate threw his arms around his best friend, which was pretty funny since he had only seem him like two whole times before this and saw the other two with him literally always, and almost screamed in excitement. He kept his cool though. It was definitely and totally fine. When Cam pulled away, he looked at the other two. “Yeah! I told you I’d bring them one day. Cam, this is Max and Ben. Guys, this is Cameron. He’s the coolest person in the entire world!” Max smiled and nodded his head. “Hey.” Ben, however, had no such graces. He pushed himself forward and grabbed Cam’s hand for a big shake. “Howdy! So you’re the Cameron that Nate’s always talking about. Crazy. And who are you?” He scooted himself out of the way and looked at the other kid in the room.​

Cameron smiled over at the other two, though his excitement at seeing Nate was high, he was happy to finally meet Ben and Max. He blushed a little at Nate called him the coolest person in the entire world. “It’s so nice to meet you two!” Cam said as he saw Ben come forward and shake his hand, he shook it back with a grin. “Well.. I guess so.” He said as he looked back. Gaige had gotten up and wandered over, smiling and held out his hand for Ben. “Hello! My name is Gaige! It’s so nice to meet you all.” He said as Cameron wanted to smack his head. “Sorry. Yeah, this is Gaige. He and I are in the training program together. Gaige, this is Nate, Ben and Max.”​

Ben did not hesitate to snatch up Gaige’s hand and give it a big shake. “Well, it’s great for you to meet me!” He ended with a huge laugh as he dropped Gaige’s hand and placed both of his on his sides. Max merely smiled as he stood further back from the rest of them. Nate, who was used to Ben, did not even react to that. Instead he raised both brows at the statement. “Oh, you finally got to train! That’s cool. What are they having you guys training to do? I’ve never gotten to do any of the training stuff. My mama won’t let us do anything like that. Says it’s too dangerous and that I’m not really soldier material.”​

Gaige laughed as Ben shook his hand in a big shake and shook his head. Cameron hadn't been expecting that, but it made him smile and laugh softly. Cam looked at Nate and nodded with a happy smile. "We're training to be soldiers." Cam said as he looked at Nate. "And we would've had class today but the teachers were dealing with a mini-horde." He added as he led them further into the room. "We just finished a card game, did you guys wanna play a game?" Cam asked with a smile on his face.​

Ben was the first one shaking his head at all of that. “They should send us out there. We deal with mini- and massive hordes all the time. We could take them!” He laughed again, that big boisterous laugh. Max, who was mostly quiet, put a hand on his shoulder. “We do not usually defend entire bases, camps, and homes. Just ourselves.” Nate rolled his eyes at his big brother Ben and looked over at Cam. “Oh! Yeah! We would love to play a game.” Max stepped beside him. “I’m always up for a good challenge.”​

Cameron looked at Ben, shocked a little bit as he heard him. Even he wasn't ready to face a mini-horde, but he also didn't travel like they did. He'd never even seen an infected person in real life yet. Gaige on the other hand was right with Ben. "I agree! I told the teachers that they should take us too and we can learn on the go." Gaige said as he laughed, his laugh more musical as he looked at Ben. Gaige liked him, he seemed like an interesting kid. Cameron looked at Nate and Max, grinning. "We should do Uno then! It's a great game with more than two people." Cameron suggested.​

Ben was an outspoken and confident kind of guy. “We totally could have joined you!” He stood right by Gaige, probably not leaving enough space for someone else to feel comfortable. They never had any sort of personal space when they were all together. One, they didn’t have room for that, and two, they were family. These new guys were like family, right? Max moved to Ben’s side and placed a hand on his shoulder. “Ben. Uno is a good idea too.” He looked towards Cameron. “We can beat them at their own game.” Nate laughed at all of them and nodded. “We would love to play! It’s been ages since we got to do any sort of real game.” He bounced over to the table and gestured for everyone else to join him.​

Gaige didn't have any issues with Ben being close, which was odd to him but at the same time he didn't care. "I would've loved to have you join us!" Gaige said excitedly, his eyes gleaming. He looked over at Max who'd come over and Gaige sighed softly. Cameron looked at Max and nodded before glancing to Nate hearing him laugh. "Awesome!" Cameron said as he followed Nate over to the table. Gaige grabbed Ben's hand and pulled him over towards the table. "Come on!" He said, laughing as he walked towards the table, his smile never fading from his face.​

Ben did not even hesitate as he was dragged towards the table. In fact, he practically ran over there with him. It was true that they never got to play a lot of games, because they were always on the move. Within the last few years, they started traveling a lot more with Nate and his family. They did not have access to actual things like cards. They had to make up their own things. He and Max took spots at the table. Ben slapped the table. “Hit me!” Nate shook his head. “That’s a different game.” Ben laughed loudly and shrugged. “Still giving me cards, right?” He looked over at Gaige. “It’s the same thing I think.”​

Gaige noticed that Ben ran over to the table with him basically and he grinned happily. He had started learning some of these games with Cameron and he was happy to have others to be able to play with. He looked at Ben as he slapped the table where he sat beside him. He hit his arm as he heard that and Cameron laughed, shaking his head. "That's a card game Gaige, not an invite." Cam said as he shuffled the cards to hand them out to everyone. Gaige blushed and looked at Ben. "Oh, uh sorry for hitting you. And.. now that I understand, then yes. You do still get cards." He said, knowing very little considering coming from what used to be a huge poker city.​

Nate watched Cam as he shuffled the cards. “I wish that I could do that.” Max shrugged. “It’s not that hard.” Nate waved him away. “That’s because everything is easy for you. Cam? Was it hard to learn?” He really was interesting in learning more about things like cards. They didn’t get to use them a lot. Ben was not at all paying attention to the other three. He wasn’t laughing so hard that his chest was starting to hurt. He was not at all upset by Gaige hitting him. “No!” he managed to choke out between laughs. “That’s so good! You’re so funny!” He playfully hit Gaige’s arm. “I told you to hit me and you did!” He was rolling again. “Nate told us this was the best place ever but he didn’t say it had the best people. We’ve been here like two whole minutes and this is great already.”​

Cameron looked over at Max as he heard him and then heard Nate's words. "It's not as hard as it seems, I can teach you if you'd like." Cam offered as he looked at Max. "In fact, here, I'll do it slower and then you can try." Cam said, as he shuffled the cards slower for Max. Gaige heard Ben's laughter and it made him smile happily, widely. He laughed too, hard and heartily. He felt Ben hit his arm and he couldn't help but continue chuckling even as he caught his breath. "I didn't know who I'd be meeting today but you three are pretty great!" He said, smiling happily as he looked at Ben. "We should probably pay attention huh?" He said, leaning closer to Ben with a smirk on his face as he did, he had never had so much fun in his life.​

Nate and Max both watched as Cam slowly shuffled the cards. Nate wasn’t sure that he got it, and he readjusted his glasses like that might help him. Max didn’t move, and Nate knew that was his thinking face. He was taking it all in. Ben didn’t really notice how close Gaige was. He was used to being close to his brothers, so it didn’t even phase him. “Nah. They’re still doing the boring beginning stuff.” No need to pay attention. He never really did with these kinds of things. “They can’t beat us. We win at everything.” Now that his laughter died away, he wasn’t left with a big smile instead as he turned to his new companion. “What about you? Are you a winner?”​

Cameron took his time shuffling the cards and then set the deck in front of Max. "Alright, you try." He said with a smile on his face. Gaige looked at Ben, and smiled, nodding. "That's true. Who needs to pay attention to shuffling." Gaige agreed though as he nodded. He saw that big smile and smiled back just as big. "I'm a winner. I've won every game against Cam. Maybe we should team up against them and we can win this together." Gaige suggested as he smiled just a little bigger at Ben.​

Max watched with rapt attention. Nate too watched, though he was a little distracted by the other two. He had not expected there to be someone else there, and though he did not mind at all, he had also not expected for that someone else to immediately attach to Ben. Or the other way around? They already seemed like they had been friends forever. He turned back to Cam just as Max was taking the cards. “Like this?” he asked humbly despite not only holding it the same way as Cam but being able to shuffle with what seemed like no effort. Nate sighed. “Cameron, how is this fair?” He threw up his hands. Ben looked at Gaige with an entirely renewed vigor which was saying a lot since he always was like this. “Yes! That is a great idea. I don’t think anyone could ever beat either of us, and if we’re together, then they certainly can’t.” He threw his arm around Gaige’s shoulder and pulled him into a kind of hug. “WE ARE GOING TO WIN!”​

Cameron chuckled as he watched Max try it himself and he smiled as he nodded, hearing the question. "Yeah! Just like that!" Cam said, impressed as he looked over at Nate. "I don't know, some of us can shuffle and some can't." Cam replied as he looked at Nate with a shrug and a smile. "It took me a while before I actually figured it out." Gaige smiled wide at Ben and nodded happily. "Yes!!" He said happily as he felt the arm around his shoulder and he leaned into the kind of hug happily. "Gaige and Ben! Winners!" He agreed with a big smile on his face.​

Nate grinned at the other two. “Hey, I think that’s cheating. The two of you can’t team up. We have too many for pairs.” Ben shook his head. “You can’t change my mind, Matthews. I have finally found someone worthy of my greatness, and you are going down.” His arm was still over Gaige’s shoulders. “Right, Gaige?” Nate, though he loved seeing these two becoming such fast friends, was not sure what to do. This seemed an impossible situation. Max came to the rescue. “Ah, I see. Okay. Nate, why don’t you and Cameron team up too? I don’t need a partner. I can do this.” He all but expertly shuffled the cards again. Nate looked over at Cam. “What do you say?”​

Gaige stuck his tongue out at Nate with a laugh hearing Ben's words. "You're just upset because you know we'll beat you." He said with a smirk as he looked at Ben. "Right Ben!" He agreed, nodding his head. Cameron was happy to see those two becoming such fast friends. Before he could say anything, Max came to the rescue and watched as he expertly shuffled the cards. "That works for me. Let's take them down Nate." Cam said with a grin on his face.​

Nate shook his head. “No. If anyone should be upset, it’s you. I’ve got the best partner in the whole world.” He smiled wide at Cameron. The other boys may have been his closest friends like brothers, but he loved Cameron. If he could have, he would taken Cam with them when they left. As he looked over at Gaige, he could see the way he sat next to Ben. Ben still had an arm draped around Gaige’s shoulders and leaned in very close as he prepared to get their cards. “Keep dreaming, little man. I’m pretty sure I got the best deal of everyone.” He would take Gaige too then. They could be one big family. Max smiled sweetly. “Since everyone else has pairs, I can deal.” He did. He played Uno once before with another group of guys. He was a bit hesitant, though he finally got the cards out to everyone.​
