Cameron and Devin Harris

Cameron thought about that for a moment and nodded. "I guess it's kind of like that. Though this would be life if we weren't in a world full of infected." He said, shrugging his shoulders. "And I think college means better jobs. I've only played this game once." He admitted as he put his own blue peg in the red car and set it on the College path. He thought for a moment and hummed softly. "Okay. Since you chose Career, you need to draw three career cards and pick one as your job and put the others back. And then we choose who goes first. Uh spin the spinner to see if you get a higher or lower number than mine. I'll spin first. Whoever gets the highest number starts." Cam said, spinning the spinner. He got a 7, not bad, but not great. "Okay, your turn."

Three career cards. “These?” He picked up the pile and pulled the first three. “Mechanic, Entertainer, and Hair Stylist.” He thought about that. “I don’t know how good I would be at any of these. Maybe a mechanic? Maybe I can fix things and that would help people.” He chose that one. Then he spun the spinner. It went around and around and around until finally it slowed. “Three. Well, I guess that means you go first?” He sat back and looked at the board. “There’s so much on here. And some of it is crazy!” He laughed reading some of the spots. “So, why the red car for you?”

Cam looked at the cards and nodded. "Yep!" He said before he listened to the three that Nate picked and he laughed a little at his response. "Well, these are hypothetical jobs, I mean. Hair Stylist? Those don't exist anymore and Entertainer? What a weird career." Cameron said, shaking his head as he watched Nate spin. "Right, so I'll spin first to go." He said, and spun the spinner. "Okay, so I got a six. I move my car six spaces and then you go. And I chose the red car because red is my favorite color."

The idea that there was a Game of Life that was based on the old world life was not quite hitting with the ten year old as he followed through the game. “Red is a good color. Mine is blue. A light blue though. Like the sky.” He spun for the next number and got a five. He picked up his little car and moved it, counting out loud for each. “So do any of these little things I pass mean anything or does it only matter that I land on this?” He read the spot. “What does this bit LIFE at the bottom mean? And I adopt a pet? Can it be any pet?”

Cameron was no real expert on the game himself so he was kind of going off the board too. "Well, the only one that matters are the ones that say STOP, which means um let me show you." He said, spinning his turn and got a seven. "So I can only move until I hit this STOP even though it's only five spaces, because I graduated." He said, picking up three College cards and chose the Doctor one. "And then, the green ones mean payday which gives you money, so the better the job the more money you get each pay day. That money helps you when you have to pay for things for your kids if you have any, a house, and other things. Though I have to be honest, I don't know a lot about this game other than it's silly enough to be fun." Cameron admitted, then smiled. "That's a pretty color blue and sure, whatever pet you want."

“I do not understand this money thing.” Nate frowned as he listened to this explanation. He pointed to the nearest Payday that he had already passed. “Oh. Are they like FEDRA’s ration cards?” He shook his head. “Those are ridiculous. Mama says they use those to control people. Which is rude. Buuuut this doesn’t look like it’s the same. What if we could save more? Hmm. That’s an interesting thought.” He spun and for a four. He only was getting small numbers. He landed on another one of those LIFE spot. “Take a vacation.” He laughed. “What would even be a vacation? Something fun? I don’t know. Also, I’ve chosen an iguana as a pet. His name is Liopleurodon. I heard that once. It’s one of my favorite words. Liopleurodon.”

Cameron shrugged as he looked at Nate, unsure himself. "I guess so? I know mom told me that money was used in the old world for buying things and ration cards are used to get things in Zones with FEDRA still there so maybe? I don't know." Cam admitted as he looked at the board. "An iguana named Liopleurodon? That's a funny name." Cameron said, laughing before he took his own spin. He landed on a LIFE spot and picked up the card. "Start a snail farm? What? Who even does that?" Cameron asked, shaking his head at the idea. "This game is so weird."

This game was weird, but Nate kind of liked it. It didn’t make him have to think too hard about anything real, and he liked seeing all the weird things people used to do in the old world. “That seems strange. Why would you farm snails? Is that like with cows? But cows bring us food and milk. What do we get from snails?” He spun and looked at the finally large number. “Eight! So much better! If I were going to farm any animal, it would be a tiger. Don’t know why I just like them.” His little car only made it part of the way when he hit the STOP. “Get married. Well that seems sudden. Do I know anyone I want to marry?” He looked over at the tiny pegs and wasn’t sure which one to pick up. “I don’t think I know anyone I’d want to marry.” He glanced over at Devin and Alicia and gagged. “What if I don’t want to be married?” His question was a little quieter now. He was less sure of what he was saying. “What if…” He wasn’t exactly certain what he was trying to ask either.

Cameron looked at Nate and shrugged. "I know that people used to eat them from what my mom told me once." He said, sticking his tongue out. "It's gross though. Eating snails." He said before he heard that. "Farm tigers? What purpose would they have. Maybe if you raised them then you can use them against bad people like FEDRA." Cameron suggested with a laugh. He watched as Nate spun and then saw him land on the marriage STOP. "Well, it's not real so it would be more like.. picking a peg and putting it with yours." He said, hearing his quieter question and seemed to be less sure. "Like, here let me go." He said, spinning a nine and moving before stopping at the same one. Cam grabbed a blue peg and stuck it in his car. "See?"

Nate watched as Cameron picked up the little peg. Was it really that simple? He was having such a hard time separating this fake life from his real life. Like with the peg colors. Cam said it was blue for boys and pink for girls according to the game. Who was he supposed to put in the car with him? Cam put another blue one in the car. His mama was a girl. She didn’t have anyone else. Though she did say that she would have married his daddy if she could have. He picked up a little pink peg and put it in the car. He had no idea who this other person would be that he would be in a car with, assuming that this was when the cars worked. He was envisioning the FEDRA trucks and him and some girl beside him. He knew some girls, and he liked them but as friends. He decided not to think about it anymore. “Okay, now we’re married and we get money for things like snail farms which is weird.” He spun again. Two. Then he drew a card. He pulled it closer to his face, eyes narrowed. Then he shoved it further away. Finally he read, “Upgrade computer. Pay $10,000.” He looked at Cam and shrugged. “What does that even mean?”

When Cameron put the blue peg in his car, he was thinking about how he didn't like seeing his older brother making out with his girlfriend. And how much fun he was having with his newest friend. He nodded, hearing that with a laugh though he noticed that Nate held the card close, then further away before he finally read it out loud. "That just means you put $10,000 in the pile over here. It's weird. I don't know, I just like to read the cards and try and imagine what the world was like back then." Cam admitted as he spun a '5' and moved his car to a payday spot and picked up what he thought was the right payday amount. "Your turn."

Nate did not understand the arbitrary numbers that they assigned to money. It made no sense. He counted out the money and did as it said as he watched Cam move his little car. He moved to spin when suddenly he stopped. “Wait. This isn’t right.” He picked up another little peg, a blue one, and put it in the car behind the one he assumed was his old world self. “Liopleurodon has to be there too!” Then he spun and moved himself forward a couple more. “Swap careers? Why would I do that?” He picked up the career cards and grabbed the first three again, assuming this worked the same way. “Did I not like being a mechanic anymore? Does that happen?” He held out the cards. “Teacher, Athlete, and Artist.” He considered these. “I don’t know… Athlete looks fun I guess. Let’s go with that one. Which would you go with?”

Cameron shrugged as he looked at Nate, seeing him move to spin before he stopped. His head tilted to the side curiously as he heard his words, before he chuckled, seeing him add a peg to the car for the pet. This game was interesting but a little confusing too. Cam heard the question when Nate had to swap careers. "Maybe. Sometimes a new career is a good thing. Get a change of pace?" Cameron asked as he heard the three option and hummed. "I would've gone with Artist probably." Cam said, he loved to color but there weren't many options for coloring around here. He took his turn and landed on the junction between family and normal road. Cam didn't want a family so he chose the normal path and ended up on a blank space. "Your turn." He said, looking at Nate with a smile.

Nate watched as Cameron moved along. “I think you understand this game better than I do,” he observed. He was not judging or complaining. He was not even lamenting. He was genuinely intrigued that Cam could wrap his head around so many foreign concepts in a way that Nate was having a very difficult time doing. He spun for himself and moved a pretty good chunk of the board with his ten allotted spaces. It was just a payday, but it was still pretty good. He was not sure if this was a race, though he thought it should be. He could understand that. “I think it would be fun to have more little pegs with me if I was traveling in this car all the time. The more family the better, right?”

Cameron shrugged his shoulders as he looked at Nate. "I don't know. I just kind of pick things I like. And I love drawing even if I'm not the best at it." Cameron said as he watched Nate go. He looked at him and chuckled as he took his own turn and stopped at the family path or normal path. "I guess so. I don't know. My family is kind of small and we don't really talk or interact. So I don't know if I'd like a big family." Cameron admitted as he took the normal path and landed on one of the few blank spots on the board.

When Nate landed on the spot where he had to choose between the normal path and the family, he took the family. “I don’t know how big my family is,” he answered as he collected some of his earnings, though he didn’t understand them at all, and read some of the spaces and cards. “I have my mama. And my daddy died before I was born. I think.” He wasn’t super sure. “And I have a lot of people who are with us a lot like Ben and Max. But I don’t know who gets to be family. Is it just the person you choose to take in the car with you?” He asked about the game while asking about the real world. It was so hard. “Or can it be others too?”

Cam listened to him as he watched him move through the board and nodded. "Well, I just have my mom, dad and brother. So it's kind of small." He admitted before he frowned. "I'm sorry to hear that." Cam added, and tilted his head. "Well, if I consider the group, then I've got kind of a big family too, as for this. I think it's just who you spend time with? Who you want to spend time with no matter what?" He said, shrugging. Cameron spun his turn and he was almost to the end of the board. "I think.. family is whoever you want it to be in the end."

Nate was a little further back on the board, though he did not feel that this was a game that was a race. If this was life, then no one wanted their life to be over faster than others, right? Cam’s words were sweet, and he liked them a lot. “Do you wanna be my family?” he asked as he spun and moved his little car. “’Cause, I love when I get to come here. You’re like the coolest person in all these Firefly places.”

Cameron didn't really feel like this was a race either, but he was also competitive and loved to play games. He often played them by himself, so having someone to play with was wonderful. He looked up at Nate and smiled, nodding his head. "Okay!" He said, laughing a little bit. "Honestly. I love when you come over too. It's so boring when it's just me and Devin." Cameron admitted as he spun and moved his car as well.

Nate looked over at Devin and his girlfriend and stuck out his tongue like he was going to be sick. He giggled into the gesture. He also moved his car after spinning, and honestly, they were getting very close to the end of the game. “Maybe next time we can bring Max and Ben! You would love them too! If you can be family, then they are totally family. Our family!” Nate really liked this idea of all his favorite people being his family. He could imagine them all together somewhere. Maybe here. It was nicer here than Boston.

Cameron giggled as he saw Nate stick his tongue out after looking at Devin and his girlfriend. He was the same way. He watched Nate move his car and realized they were both a spin away from the end. "That would be so cool! I'd love to meet them and we can all be one happy family." He agreed, nodding his head as he took his turn and got a couple spaces away from the end. "And we can all play a game together!" Cameron added as he looked at Nate with a smile on his face.

Nate grinned and gestured to the sickening couple. “But not them. They aren’t invited.” He made another gagging mime before he spun and moved his car to the very end. “Oh. What do we do now? It’s not a race right? So I didn’t win. How do you know if you won life? This is very confusing.” He leaned in close to the board and started looking at it like it would tell them the answer. “I’m definitely asking Mama if we can bring them next time. They’ve started going with us sometimes so it only seems fair.”

Cameron nodded his head as he heard Nate. "I agree, they aren't invited." He said, laughing at the gagging mime. He noticed that Nate made it to the end and when he spun, he did as well. "So, how I played it the last time was whoever had the most money wins." He said shrugging. He wondered if they'd have time for another game or not. "I think that's a great idea!" Cameron agreed as he smiled wide.

Nate looked at all of his things and started the very long process of adding it all up. “Is this a lot? I think it sounds like a lot, but I don’t know.” That was the struggle with living in a world where money became irrelevant. “But you have way more! You were a doctor and made a lot more money than me every time we passed these. But I did get to do a lot of these ‘Life’ things.” He added it up and shrugged. “Eh, I think it’s cool that I won whatever this Pullover Award is. How did you do?”

Cameron looked at the board as he listened to Nate. “Well. I think I’ve got more money, but you have the life token things, and I was told those were important to. So.. I think you won?” Cam said, tilting his head a little bit. “But I did good overall I think.” He added, shrugging his shoulders. “We should probably pick this up, just in case you have to leave soon.” He added, a soft sigh slipping out of him.
