The Fugitive

Emily nods and stays put, though seeming rather worried about you. You carefully go back up the steps and creep your way through the living room, crouching by a window and slowly and lifting your head so that your eyes may peer outside. You see a cop (facing away from you) that has started to walk to around the back of the house you're in. Their gun is slung and they just look to be shining a flashlight around. Meanwhile, it appears the state patrol car has been slowly driving along and following them. Though, the foot cop will no longer be in their sight shortly.

I quickly dart back down into the basement and hide underneath the window there, waiting to hear the footsteps of the cop coming nearby.

"Think I could fit through here?" I ask Emily, pointing up at the window.

Emily turns her head and looks over at the small window, speaking in a whisper. "I...I think so. Why? Are we getting out?" she asks. There is some movement heard outside, and Emily freezes. She then ducks down and stays still, not looking up. On the other side of the window, you can see the shining of a flashlight in the darkness, but then it disappears. You can assume the cop wandered past the window without noticing anything.

If you're going to crawl out, you have to do it quietly.

"We might have to if one of the cops tries to get in," I tell Emily in a hushed voice once the cop has walked past, "but we might be able to wait them out."

I keep my head down and bide my time, hoping to hear the police cruiser engine starting up and driving off soon.

Time passes, and eventually there is nothing but dead silence outside. The cruiser seems to have left, and there are no visible lights outside.

"They're gone now," I say to Emily as I stand up and take in several breaths, "they might come back though. We should get moving."

Emily nods, eager to get out of the area before any more patrolmen happen to show up.

...

You and Emily fled the abandoned suburb after getting your possessions and heading out the door. You both stayed low and travelled through the forest for a couple days, avoiding state patrol units. You're probably nearing the outer region of the safe-zone, where the highways are travelled by fewer and fewer cars, and the rural buildings are more and more abandoned.

As you are walking along the road, you and Emily both see a roadside cafe up ahead. Both of you are tired and hungry from your travels, and Emily suggests searching the building for supplies.

I make sure to grab the duct-tape from the barricaded shelter before I leave with Emily.

"I think that someone might've already taken all the food from the cafe, but we can still check," I say to Emily, drawing my gun and peeking through the windows of the cafe to see if there's anybody inside.

You move over to the front of the building to the closest window, looking through it. Inside, it's somewhat dark. Though, there's enough light shining through so that you're able to clearly see a pale, raggedly-clothed woman standing over a dead body. Blood is dripping from her arm, and she appears to be nursing a wound by wrapping it up with some bandaging. The dead body might be one of the infected, by the looks of it.
