The Fugitive

I'm sure we'll be fine. We could always just stay in during the night and talk about various things.

"Alright, help me find something to barricade the windows and doors then," I say as I start searching around the house for something to aid that venture.

You and Emily look around the house and erect a set of barricades which blocks off the windows and doors of the house. This mostly consists of furniture such as sofas, tables and chairs. It seems like it should be able to hold against any infected, and it might stall a policeman from getting inside as well.

"I think that should be fine. Let's go get some rest," I say, wiping my hands on my pants and heading upstairs.

You both walk on upstairs to where the bedrooms are. You and Emily go about laying down, and soon fall into a deep slumber. Several hours pass before you wake up from your rest. You groggily open your eyes, and notice that Emily is still asleep, snoring softly. It is very dark in the room, which is only illuminated by the faint moonlight shining in through the bedroom window. You hear the wind blowing outside in a high-pitched whistle, and the branches of a tree rapping against the side of the house.

She must be more tired than I thought. I decide to let Emily sleep as I sit up in bed and try to think of what to do. I still haven't checked out that basement. Might be some interesting goodies in there. I can do that while I wait for Emily to wake up. I look around for Emily's flashlight and take it, along with my gun, switching the flashlight on as I begin making my way to the basement.

You flick the flashlight on and make your way down the steps, to the first floor. You walk around the corner and come across the door leading to the basement steps, which has been left open. It is pitch dark down there, so it was good of you to bring the flashlight. There is little that you can see from the top of the steps- you will have to go down to get a better look at things.

I just hope Emily will be able to wake up if I get in trouble down there. Who knows what's in there? I hold my gun at the ready and keep the flashlight shining in front of me as I cautiously proceed down the steps further into the basement.

Descending from the top, you make it to the bottom of the steps and take a look around the basement. It's old and dirty, but not completely trashed; the survivors must have cleaned the place up when they previously resided here. There appears to be a window in the basement, but little to no moonlight is shining through it. You see a roll of duct tape on one of the shelves, as well as a few old books.

Duct tape could be useful later on. I'll come back down to grab it before Emily and I leave the house and keep moving. I put my gun away in my pocket for a brief moment as I flip through the pages of the books to see if they're still intact. If they're in decent-enough condition, I could keep them with me for reading whenever I have a spare moment.

You flip through the pages of some of the books, and they seem to still be in relatively good condition, by the looks of it. Though, judging by the covers, you only have an old romance novel, a book about types of cameras, and a child-rearing instruction book.

I don't need any information on cameras or raising a kid. A novel could be useful for entertaining myself though. I leave behind the camera and parenting books, taking only the romance novel and heading back up to the bedroom to put it away in my bag, looking over at the bed to see if Emily's still sleeping.

You take the book and leave the basement, walking back upstairs and into the bedroom where Emily is sleeping. She stirs slightly upon the sound of your entry, but is still asleep, by the looks of it. Though, it seems like she may wake up soon enough.

I slowly crawl into bed and lie down beside Emily, trying my best not to wake her from her peaceful sleep. After a few moments of slow maneuvering into a comfortable position, I open the novel and start reading, not really expecting much from the book, but just wanting a way to pass the time while I wait for Emily to wake up.

You open the novel and begin to read. On the cover, you saw that it was a novel apparently titled "A Creek Apart" by somebody named "Beatrice Smith". You get a few pages in before you notice Emily stir a bit before yawning and lifting herself up, and she looks over at what you're doing. "Where'd you get that?" she asks, rubbing her eyes slightly.

"Good morning to you too," I say to Emily, looking away from my book and at her.

"I found it in the basement. There was also a book about cameras and one about raising a kid. I don't think we're going to need information on either of those things though."

Emily gives off a chuckle and nods, stretching as she sits up. "Well, when do you think we should...Hold on." She lowers her voice to a whisper, now. "I think I hear something...? Shit..." You think you hear something as well- some kind of automobile out on the street. "What is it? Should we go see?" Emily asks. There is a window overlooking the street out in the hallway, which you could use to peer out and look.

I nod to Emily and gesture for her to stay put. I grab my gun and head to the window, peeking out of it while trying my best to keep my face hidden from sight, in case someone looks up at the window.

You leave Emily in the bedroom, making your way over to the window where you crouch and carefully peek out of it. Outside, you see an automobile which you quickly identify as a police car. It can't be seen very well, but you can assume that it is a state patrol car. The door on the passenger's side opens up, and you see a cop wearing a windbreaker and knit cap step out. He keeps the door open, staying leaned inside as he presumably speaks to another cop inside. There is some kind of gun slung around his back.

He's probably managed to track me down. Damn pigs. No chance of escaping here, and having a gun fight isn't in my best interest. The best place to hide would probably be the basement. The barricades should keep him out for some time. I quickly head back into the bedroom.

"Cops outside," I say to Emily as I get my bag and items together, "we need to hide in the basement, right now."

You walk back inside to meet Emily, telling tell her what is going on. As she listens, you see her eyes visibly widen. She glances around, before quickly nodding and scrambling off the bed and onto to her feet. "Right, right," she says in a low whisper. "Did they see us? Are they coming?" she asks.

I shake my head, "I have no idea. But we're better safe than sorry, right? Come on, we need to get going, keep your head down."

Once Emily has gotten all her things, I crouch down and start moving to the basement with her.

Emily nods, following you outside and keeping away from the exposing windows. You and her both head downstairs and make your way into the lower level of the house, where you immediately notice the basement window. "Let's keep away from it," Emily says to you as she goes and crouches down in hiding.

"We can escape through it if the cops get down here though," I whisper, crouching down as well. I start looking around the room for any bits of furniture or large objects I could push in front of the door to use as a barricade in case the cops get into the house and decide to to entering the basement.

The basement is lacking in objects that you think would suffice as a decent barricade, so the stairs will remain open. Though, you do not hear anybody inside of the house upstairs. For all you know, they might not know you're here.

"Wait here, I'm going to go see if they're coming," I whisper to Emily as I slowly head up the stairs and peek out one of the windows to see what the police officers are doing.
