Joshua and Jacob Smith
FEDRA Commander, FEDRA Civilian | 26, 32 | Current location ;; Seattle Quarantine Zone

Jacob stayed still, watching the interaction with cautious hope. Maybe.. Maybe this was how they started to bridge the gap. A night home, a trip somewhere. Something familiar to them. Josh felt Hayden press himself into one hand and then the other, and when he moved closer, he could see Hayden leaning over. Their foreheads pressed together and he closed his eyes, enjoying the contact. The humming growing louder, but still soft. It felt like normal, like how things should be.

Hope. Soren had reserved hope before. Hayden had sorrowful hope prior. Hope. Hayden breathed. In and out. Out and in. And he opened his eyes. “Josh?” A little whisper so quiet that Soren could only barely hear that he said anything at all. Hayden’s hands slid from the hands around his head to the cheeks of the person he always wanted to be there the most. When was the last time Josh was there when this happened? Had he ever been the one to be there to greet him at the end? Maybe. He couldn’t remember anymore. Maybe not. He never wanted Josh to see that. Sometimes, it was Josh who had specifically could not let see that. But now. Now he saw. There was no taking that back. So he gave up. He gave up so many times today already, so why not do it again. He crawled forward and collapsed into Josh’s chest. He was exhausted from that.

Hope. What was it Josh said once? Hope is stronger than fear. And he believed that still. This hope was uncertain. He could hear Hayden breathing in and out. Then he heard the soft whisper. "I'm here love. I'm here." He whispered back, feeling the hands slide from his own and then felt them on his cheeks. "I'm here." Josh said again, as he thought about what he'd seen. It had been so.. hard to watch. He noticed Hayden crawl forward and then when he collapsed into his chest, he wrapped his arms around Hayden. "I've got you." Josh whispered, rubbing his back. Jacob moved away, and sat beside Soren. "Give them a few minutes and then we'll see if we can leave them alone or not."

This would have been the perfect time for Hayden to tell Josh the things that he saw. The things that haunted him from the day that the world changed to that moment. It would have been so good of him to share everything that was going on inside his mind. If he could tell anyone, it was Josh, right? Right. He believed that. As he laid there, no clinging or anything with how weak he felt, he thought that maybe he could. Maybe he would. Maybe. He wanted to. He often wanted to. “I’m sorry.” Soren leaned his head against Jacob’s shoulder and turned away to give the other two some time for themselves. He did not want to get up to leave. He was afraid that might hurt Hayden. It might even hurt Josh. All he could do was wait for a little while.

Josh stayed still, rubbing his back gently as he held onto Hayden gently. Holding him close. He heard those words and sighed softly. "It's okay love. You have nothing to be sorry for." He whispered softly as he sat there. "But if you ever want to talk, I'm here to listen." Josh added as he kissed the top of Hayden's head. Jacob felt Soren's head lean against his shoulder as he too turned away to give them space. It was only fair after all. He wasn't going to leave for a little while because he wasn't sure if it would be helpful or hurtful to go.

If he was not the one who was supposed to be sorry, then who was? Who was at fault then if not him? Was it Josh? So much of his blamed Josh. Blamed him for killing Kyra and the neighbors. Blamed him for joining FEDRA. For never coming home. For never being there. But how could he blame Josh when all he was doing was protecting them? Being the hero. Josh was his hero. Always had been. But also. Also... He had nothing to say. There was no way to explain. So he didn’t. Instead he whispered, “Thank you.” It was all he could say. He was just so glad to have Josh with him. Soren sat there quietly for a while but felt that they should do something. He did not mind waiting; however, he did not want to look like he was sitting there watching them. “I think today was a good day. Did a patrol. Got to skip out on the second one. Saw my favorite twin, sorry dear, and learned about a baby on the way. What could be better than that?”

Josh waited patiently, his hand rubbing the top of Hayden's back, where he hadn't hit it. He kissed the top of his head again, and heard the whispered words. "You're welcome love." He said softly, before he flicked his gaze to Soren, hearing his words. A soft chuckle bubbled up from his throat as he held Hayden close. "I have to agree. It was a pretty good day. Perhaps I need to start taking some nights off." He said as Jacob looked at Soren, letting his face fall in mock upset for a moment at the favorite twin comment before letting his smile grow again. "I had a wonderful day." He whispered, kissing Soren gently. One more day and then they'd be married, and he couldn't wait.

Soren, enraptured in Jacob as he so often was, vaguely pointed in Josh’s direction. “That is a smart idea. I think you should.” His hand fell and made its way to the side of Jacob’s neck during the kiss. Kisses always ended too soon. “Nights off are always good.” He slid that hand up to cup Jacob’s cheek as he kissed him softly and slowly. He was supposed to be there to support Josh, right. Uh huh, and then there was Jacob. Josh was fine. Hayden’s attention was drawn away from his thoughts, and he let his eyes wander until he saw the other two. He smiled. They were so sweet together. That was the dream. Kissing on the floor, because nothing could deter them. That was his dream. He had that once. Right now, he thought maybe he could have that again. He was, after all, also on the floor with his love. His love. He loved Josh so much. Why wasn’t that enough?

Jacob was getting distracted again, feeling the hand cup his cheek as he heard Soren. "Mm. I agree." Jacob whispered as he kissed him back, just as slow and sweet. As it so often did when he kissed Soren, the world was fading from view once again. Josh, looking over at them, and saw how sweet they looked. He was glad that his brother had that. He turned to look at Hayden, his fingers slipping down and guiding his head up to look at him. "I think I could enjoy these nights off." He whispered, leaning in and kissing Hayden gently, softly, lovingly.

All days were worth it when he got to come home to Jacob. Soren could weather any storm and endure whatever FEDRA threw at them if he could always be guaranteed to have this when he was done. Honestly, if he could find a way to make it work, he wouldn’t even do anything with FEDRA. No more soldier boy Soren. He would just be Jacob’s husband. Though he would need a hobby for when Jacob was saving Hayden and healing others. He would also need to be married first. And that was happening so soon. “I think I might be in love with you,” he hummed low as he kissed his soon to be husband. He mostly forgot about the others now. Hayden thought this was so sweet. He wanted only the best for his brother, and he clearly seemed to have found that. It was the best thing that came out of this disaster. It was possible that they may have found each other later. Maybe even at Hayden and Josh’s wedding. If that ever happened. He didn’t have time to fall down that hole because suddenly he was being moved, and he was so willing to follow that gentle touch. He was too tired to fight it, and right now, anything Josh did felt so nice. His eyes widened as lips were on his, and then they were both pairs locked in kisses on the floor. Only he wasn’t thinking about Soren and Jacob anymore. He was trapped in a world of only Josh. His Josh. It was like magic to have this again. Like nothing ever came between them. Hungry fingers of his own reached up to caress the skin of cheeks and neck. Aimed to pull him as close as he could.

Jacob heard the low hum and the words as he kissed him back. "Only think?" Jacob hummed back as he pulled back slightly to look at him. "I think I'm in love with you too." He whispered back as he kissed him again, deeper. Jacob wrapped his arms around Soren with a hand on his neck as he deepened the kiss. All he wanted was to spend time with Soren, and being able to heal others. He would be perfectly happy if that was his life. Josh felt Hayden kiss him back, and felt those fingers reach up to caress the skin of his cheeks and neck. He wrapped his arms around his back and deepened the kiss. He pulled away for a moment but not far. "I think we should kick these two out and spend some time together. What do you think my love?" Josh asked softly.

Soren was not sure who he was more amused by, the two of them getting a little carried away or the others. It was kind of silly, except for the part where he was getting married the day after tomorrow, so he could get carried away all he wanted. He wrapped his arms around Jacob too before twisted around to look at Josh and Hayden. “What did I tell you, Josh? Nights off are great. And exactly what you need.” He stood up and put both hands down for Jacob. “I would very much like to go to our own room now.” Hayden didn’t even get upset for Josh stopping this time. It was perfectly reasonable and not at all a bizarre response. So this was what it takes for them to feel like themselves again? Him being on the verge literally the entire day, almost breaking several times, and actually breaking once? That could not be their every day. But if this was how it was now, then maybe, just maybe, they could make this work. “Jacob. Soren. Thank you for being amazing. I love you both. I am happy for you. I would also like to be in our own room too.” He looked back at Josh like he was Josh not the FEDRA officer.

Jacob felt the arms wrapped around him and looked over at the other two. A smile danced on his face as Josh chuckled softly and nodded. “I agree. You’re right this time Soren.” He said with a smile. Jacob watched as Soren stood up and he took his hands and stood up as well. Jacob smiled at Hayden and nodded. “You’re welcome buddy. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Jacob said as he pulled on Soren’s hands. Josh looked at Hayden and like he used to do, he scooped him into his arms. “Lock the door on your way out. Okay brother?” He asked and Jacob chuckled, nodding. “Got it.” He said as Josh smiled, letting the officer side of him fall for the night. “Come on love. Our room is calling.” Josh said as he turned to bring them into the bedroom.

“I am always right,” Soren corrected as he pulled Jacob to his feet and walked backwards to the door. He watched as Josh scooped up Hayden who laughed. That was such a nice laugh. It was a laugh Soren only ever heard when he was with Josh. It had been such a long time. He pushed open the door and pulled Jacob out. He paused and caught Josh’s eye. “You two have fun.” He winked and closed the door, locking it behind him.

Hayden, in the arms of his love for the first in a very long time, did in fact laugh. He laughed like he used to, because this was so close to how they used to be. With Josh right there with him. Him feeling the most like himself. He waved to the other two as they moved to the bedroom. “I missed this. Being with you.”

Josh rolled his eyes as he heard Soren's words and Jacob chuckled as he was pulled to his feet. He looked over at the two of them and smiled, hearing Hayden's laugh. He missed that. Jacob followed at the pull out the door and once the door was shut, he turned the tables and pulled Soren to their apartment with a grin, opening the door for them.

Josh heard that laugh, and it made his heart swell and he smiled wide. This was so close to their old lives. How they were before. "I missed this too. And I plan on making this a great night." Josh said as he looked back at Soren and grinned. He turned and walked with Hayden into the bedroom, setting him on the bed and looked at him with a smile as he joined him on the bed.

Soren loved that this was his family. He loved that Josh got to be his partner at work and Jacob was his partner at home. He loved that if they all worked hard enough, they could get past anything and everything. No, he didn’t think that everything was magically fixed, but he did think that this was pretty close to a good start. “Mm, why hello there.” He stumbled forward at the energetic change of events. As soon as he was in the apartment, with the door still open, he had his hands on Jacob’s cheeks, fingers pushing up into his hair as he kissed him as deeply as he could manage. He did not stop as he backed up to pushed the door closed.

For once, Hayden was not haunted by the things that lurked just out of sight. He was not plagued with the knowledge of something that no one else could know. Things did not seem as they weren’t even if they were for him. The best of all, he was not so utterly miserable and alone, because Josh was right there with him. He was beautiful. His beautiful Josh. “Joshua.” He bit his lower lip, eyes shining like they were young adults living their best lives together. “I love you.”

Jacob had never been happier in his life, and he chuckled as he heard his words. "Hello there." He replied as he pulled him into the apartment. Jacob grinned at the hands on his cheeks, feeling the fingers pushing into his hair as he kissed him back. Arms hooked around Soren's neck as he moved with him as he backed up to push the door closed. Jacob broke the kiss, took a breath, kissed him again much shorter, and then took his hand. "Come with me." He said, backing up towards the bedroom and winked at Soren.

Josh heard his words as he looked down at Hayden, hands on either side of his head. "Hayden." He whispered, blue eyes watching Hayden with love shining in them. Like it was back when they were in the normal world again. "I love you too." He leaned down and kissed his partner like the world hadn't ended, like they were young adults together and no terrible world full of infected existed.

“Yes, sir.” Soren took orders from superiors, and there was no one more superior than Jacob. That was why he was always home when Jacob wanted him there. That was why he never worked overnight or for too long of a shift. He never picked up extra patrols that were not strictly necessary. He did not even attend unnecessary events and meetings. This was a known thing in the core of their organization. Jacob came first. This was why he was so often late as well. Not because Jacob commanded it, but because he had such a hard time walking away. He followed gladly.

The last two years had been the hardest years of his life. It made him question things that he thought he fundamentally knew. It made him question of this was true. If this was still love. But it was. Even when they fought or ignored each other. When Hayden slept in the other room or Josh didn’t come home. When Hayden silently cried himself to sleep, rolled the other direction so that Josh couldn’t hear. It was still unabashedly love. It didn’t make any sense. Not anymore. But it was okay. It was going to. It had to. This was hope as Josh kissed him like he used to. As Hayden kissed him back.

Jacob smirked as he led Soren into the bedroom, and twisted so he walked backwards, grinning. He took both of his hands and pulled Soren to the bed, turning and pushing him onto it. Jacob followed and looked down at Soren, grinning as he kissed his neck. "Mm. I missed you today, I can't wait to see you in that suit." He said, kissing his jaw, then chin. Jacob loved this, spending this time with Soren. And while he hated the world as it was now, he was thankful as well because he had Soren in his life and everything was so much better. Jacob was looking forward to the wedding in two days, to finally be able to call this man his husband. And so, for Josh, he had the best night he'd had in two years, spending it with his partner. And Jacob was sound asleep by the time morning came, as was Josh for the first time in two years.

The next morning came, and the world seemed peaceful. It seemed practically like it was meant to be this way. Soren woke in the arms of who he knew to be his soulmate. He never believed in that kind of thing before he met Jacob. He still was not sure that he believed in it, though it felt like that was what he had to be in order to make this truth. With such a quick progression in their relationship. And everything was perfect. They just had to get through one more day and then they would be married. How beautiful was that? He woke and instead of doing things like getting up, he curled closer.

Hayden woke hours before that. He so rarely slept long enough to make it a full night. Though he fell asleep quickly, and he rested soundly, he woke in the early hours of the morning. Josh was so peaceful in his sleep. He was still as handsome as the days long ago. So sweet. He ran his fingers across the lines of his face. Through his hair. He loved this man so much. But. He lay there awake for another hour, maybe two, as he thought about every contradictory moment of the last two years. Because how could everything be perfect when it wasn’t? Eventually, he slipped away from the bed and found himself sitting on the couch, looking at the window and onto the dark expanse of the Seattle Quarantine Zone. He could not help but wonder if this was a mistake.

Jacob was sound asleep in the morning, curled into Soren as close as he possibly could be. It was only when he felt Soren curl closer that his eyes fluttered open and he shifted a little bit. He looked to see if Soren was awake and he could sense that he was. "Good morning love." Jacob whispered, shifting more so he could kiss him gently. One more day. Tomorrow they'd be married. And he couldn't wait.

Josh was so used to getting up early in the morning, before the sun rose. He went to work early to get things organized, and to be honest, didn't always wait for Soren either. But Josh didn't wake up until the sun was cresting the landscape. He rolled to find Hayden like he used to and he was gone. Josh slipped off the bed and headed out to the living room to see Hayden sitting there. "Hey." He said, walking over to Hayden and sitting down beside him. "You okay?"

His whisper was like a breath of life that reignited his being. Soren could have listened to him all day. He could have laid there forever. The kiss broke the spell of the in between of sleep and waking. Now he knew that he was definitely awake. His dreams were never this good. And he did dream about this. “Good morning.” His voice was saw and rough from sleep. “How are you? How did you sleep?” He rolled so that he held Jacob completely in his arms.

Hayden sat on the edge of the couch, his knees pulled up to his chest, and his gaze out the window as he watched the color come back to the world from the sun’s rise. At the sound of Josh’s approach, he held his breath. He ignored the rush of force against his shoulders. Against his chest. The knot that was already forming and solidified with the other’s presence. He slowly turned his head. He wanted about a million things in that moment. He wanted to take his hand in his own and bring it to his lap. He wanted to lay his head on Josh’s chest and be comforted by the inevitable embrace that came with it. He wanted to tell him about the dreams, both sleeping and awake. He slowly turned his head, and he smiled. “Yeah.” It was enough. “I’m okay.” For now. “You’re still here.” He looked out the window at the buildings. They were also awake. “I thought you would have gone by now.”

Jacob looked at Soren, smiling softly as he heard his rough voice. "I'm okay, I slept very well. Especially being with you." He said softly as he moved with Soren, and curled into him as he was held completely. "I wish you didn't have to leave today. I would love a day for just us." Jacob said quietly. He didn't want to be away from Soren for long, but it was worse today. He was feeling lazy and wanted to be with him and him alone.

Josh looked at Hayden as he slowly turned his head. He'd seen him sitting on the edge of the couch with his knees to his chest. "I am still here. I.. didn't want to just leave after last night." He said softly. "I.. was considering staying home today. Unless, you'd rather I leave for the day?" He asked softly as he looked at Hayden. Josh was trying but it was hard. Because sometimes he wondered if they just went through the motions and other times the love was still palpable, still so obviously there. Like yesterday.

More than anything, Soren too wanted a day for just them. He wanted to ignore his duties and stay with Jacob. They were so close to the end of this waiting. He knew that nothing really would change after this. Nothing would be actually any different. They would continue living the same way as they did before. It felt different though. They grew up in a world where marriage was something incredibly important. It was the ultimate symbol of unity. Soren wanted that. He wanted it more than anything he ever did want. “Don’t start with that,” he groaned. “You know I can’t tell you no.” With it being the day before their wedding, he was having a harder time willing himself to be away as well. He released one arm so that he could coax Jacob’s face to his. Kiss him so entirely.

Was it only the night that kept him there? If they went to bed without anything else, would Josh leave? Hayden wondered. He hoped not. He feared so. It was strange to have him so close for so long. Sometimes, he felt like he saw Soren more than his own fiancé. Soren always came home, even if late. He always said hello. He always found Jacob. And then he always stayed the night. Every night. Hayden did not feel jealous. He was glad for Jacob to have something so beautiful and pure. He would ask for nothing else. Demand it even. His brother deserved that. He did, however, question why he felt that he knew someone else’s… husband, better than who should be his own. He turned back to him, brows knit together to sudden confusion. “What?” These words did not make sense together in the context of his world. Stay home. “Why?” It was probably a harsh question. He did not mean it that way. He was shocked. Another day with him?

Jacob didn't want to share his fiancé today. He didn't want to deal with anything, and as he thought that, he realized that was kind of harsh. He didn't deal with Hayden, he helped him every day. Helped him work through his struggles. And he knew that was what he'd be doing. Helping his brother. He heard the groan and smirked a little bit, knowing that was true. "Mm. Yes, I know. That's why you're always here at night. And what would they do? Fire you? You're a commander. You can stay home all day if you want." Jacob said, before he was silenced at the kiss, kissing him back.

Josh looked at Hayden, seeing that sudden confusion in his face. The words, both of them, caused something inside Josh. Why? It sounded so harsh. Like why would you stay home. Why would you be here with me. Why not go away like always. Josh shrunk away a little bit, looking at Hayden. "I can head out if that's what you prefer. I was trying to follow through on my words yesterday. I'm trying Hayden, but if you don't want me here, I'll leave." Josh said as he looked down at his hands, sitting in his lap. He really was trying. But something had changed between them, and not even last night seemed to bridge whatever was growing. It was making him want to run again, run back to patrols and back to what he's come to see as normal.
