Josh watched what happened, his sharp eyes taking in movements that weren’t.. normal even for upset Kyra. He watched her ram herself against the bars after shoving Justin away. Something wasn’t right here. He had a horrible itch in his mind that she wasn’t well. “Fine. Soren. Let’s get the two. I’m sure Logan wants to see Jacob.” Josh said, watching Kyra for another moment before turning to walk to the apartments. He needed Hayden to see Kyra, even just for a little bit. Just once. He just wanted to see his fiancé like he was before. Justin and Darren were on guard and watching the cells. One guy started turning, screeching and Justin shot him in the head. Josh didn’t even flinch at the sound as they moved away.​

Josh may not have flinched, but Soren did. He turned back to the unfortunate person and frowned for the man as well as for the rest around. When that happened, Kyra’s body snapped around like the sound enticed her. One arm flinched like it wanted to go that way but the rest of her stayed. Her attention was only on the dead man for a moment before it turned to Justin. And then to Josh. “JOSHUA! Is this who are now? A murderer? Keeping us locked up in a cold cell?” She banged on the bars, completely ignoring the attempts at quieting her. “Hayden would never be okay with this! You know that!” Soren sighed as he looked at Kyra. Her entire body jerked to the side, and his eyes narrowed. At the same time, she threw a hand over her eyes and cursed. It was the anger. The sadness. It was understandable. So he turned around and moved with Josh. They would be right back.​

His head turned, almost lazily, as he saw her body snap to the sound of the shot. Hmm. He heard her yells, and the banging on the bars. “I’m doing what needs to be done. He’ll understand.” Josh said, before he turned and walked away. He needed to get his fiancé, needed him to see Kyra then.. he’d send him back to the apartment. And watch the two of them. He had a bad feeling in his stomach, settling like rocks. “We need to get to the apartment. Fortunately it isn’t that far of a walk.” Josh mentioned as they headed towards them. “Something isn’t right with her.” He added once they were far enough away from the cells.​

Soren didn’t like any of this. He had a feeling that he wasn’t going to like any of it no matter what the situation was. This was not a good world anymore. All they could hope was to make it better. “I can’t blame her. I’m pretty sure she got caught in the bombing.” Soren felt the same unease that Josh was feeling though he was not ready to see it as anything more than stress, pain, and grief. “Maybe… maybe she’ll be better when she knows Hayden is alright.” Even as he said it, he was aware that his words did not sit quite right. They made it to the apartment building quickly.​

Josh shook his head as he walked. “It’s different that just being caught up in a bombing.” He muttered as he opened the apartment building door, held it for Soren and made his way up the stairs. There was no time to slow down, he didn’t know how long until something, possibly happened. He got to their apartment door and stepped inside, shutting it after he and Soren were both inside. Jacob, half awake, heard the door open and gently nudged Hayden. “Buddy. Wake up.” He said quietly, knowing the only one who can get into the apartment is Josh.​

Soren did not want it to be different, and now that Josh said that out loud, there was little that he could do to deny it as well. “Stress and grief can do a lot to a person,” he said though he doubted it did much to convince Josh. It certainly wasn’t enough to convince him either. As they stepped inside the apartment, he took Josh’s arm. “Do you really think we should bring them down there?” He wanted them to see their family, but Josh was right. Something was off about Kyra. He hoped it was something possibly like a post traumatic stress. He wanted it to be something broken that they could fix. Hayden slowly opened his eyes, briefly in a state of blissful forgetting. He looked at Jacob and smiled. He listened to sounds elsewhere and frowned. He remembered. “Are they back?” He asked.​

Josh’s doubt only grew at that. He knew Kyra, and that was.. not her. Not completely anyway. He felt the hand on his arm and looked at Soren. “I’m sure. Hayden needs to see her.” Josh said as he moved towards the bedroom. Jacob looked up as Josh entered and turned to Hayden. “Yeah. They’re back.” He said, nodding his head. “Hey baby. Someone wants to see you.” Josh said, stepping further into the room. He was firm in his choice that this was what Hayden needed, that this could bring back who he was before this whole world broke.​

Suddenly, Soren wasn’t so sure anymore. Josh clearly had opinions about Kyra’s wellbeing, and Soren was afraid of what would happen if they brought Hayden down there. What was the plan? Show her off, shove him away, and then what? Deal with that if she really was… Soren followed Josh. Hayden sat up on the bed, so tired but wanting to see Josh. He needed to see that Josh wasn’t like his dream. Hayden smiled as he saw him. Everything could be better if he could keep Josh close. Right? He didn’t understand his words though. “Who?” He asked. Soren moved closer in, smiling as well. He was trying to be softer for Hayden and Jacob. There was too much heavy right now.​

Josh saw Hayden and smiled, though it didn’t reach his eyes anymore. “Kyra. We found her love.” Josh said, holding his hand out. “I can take you to her.” He added while Jacob slid off the bed and over to Soren. He could sense something was off. He walked over to him, standing beside his partner. His hand found Soren’s and he squeezed it gently. “Did you find Logan too?” Jacob asked, looking at him.​

Kyra. Hayden’s eyes lit up and his smile widened. His whole face brightened. He and his sister had always been close. They called each other relatively often. They had days where they were only the two of them. Kyra was hid biggest supporter in every endeavor. Finding her meant the world to him. He moved off the bed, and instead of taking Josh’s hand, he threw his arms around him. “You did it! You found her!” There was so much life in his words. So much more than he had now. Well, except for when Kai was around. oh Kai. He couldn’t wait for Kai to meet Kyra. She had far more energy than him. They could probably play for hours and hours without stopping. Soren squeezed Jacob’s hand. “She was with him.” Which was not exactly a lie. She was at least around the house. He wondered how long she’d been out there. Waiting. “They’re both here. They’re in the waiting cells.” He frowned, looked away. “I won’t lie to you. It isn’t pretty. It’s the best we can do for now. I have every faith that we can make them better for the future. It’s just temporary until we know they aren’t-“ he mind went to Kyra’s jerking movements, “sick.”​

That was it, that drew the biggest smile Josh has ever had. He wrapped his arms around Hayden tight, laughing softly. This was the Hayden he missed. The one he came home to everyday before this mess. “Of course I did baby. I promised I’d find her and I did.” Josh said as he kissed the top of Hayden’s head. “She’s in a waiting cell right now, and we’re going to go see her.” Josh said as Jacob looked at Soren. “Oh. Well. I’m sure Logan understands, I know I do. It’s a necessary evil to keep everyone safe.” Jacob said as he stood there, watching the other two. “Thank you for finding both of them.”​

For this moment, all of the doubt and terror melted away. Hayden was so reaffirmed in all of his beliefs that he could not help but cling to Josh. He laughed and smiled and spun his ring, though not for support. This time he spun it as he remembered being in their apartment when they told everyone. they were so happy. They could be that happy again. His dad and his mom… and their parents… But they had Kyra and Logan. That was the best news they got since this all started. His arms slid down and he shoved them below Josh’s so that he could nestle into his chest. “You’re my hero.” Always had been and always would be. He loved Josh so much. Since they met all those years ago. Soren was so glad that Jacob was such an understanding person. He gently pulled him closer to the door, eyes darting back to the other two as he moved. He needed to warn Jacob. “Logan is fine. I think he’s scared, but who isn’t? But Kyra…” What could he possibly say? “She got caught in the bombing. She’s rough. I’m sure they’ll have medics out there looking at everyone. She’s stable but it’s a lot of cuts and bruises.” How could he say the rest? “And she’s having a hard time staying calm with everything that’s happened.”​

Josh smiled as he heard Hayden laugh and it was like the world faded away around them. This was everything he'd missed, and sure they didn't have their parents anymore but.. they had each other, they had Kyra and Logan, Jacob and Soren. He felt those arms shove below his and the nestle into his chest. "I.. tried." He said softly, smiling. "Are you ready to go see her?" He asked quietly. Jacob knew about the hard things in life, being a nurse.. sometimes meant telling families hard news, and making decisions when he wished for any other outcome. As he listened to Soren, he could understand how those parents, those loved ones felt. Hearing his words, something had happened to Kyra. "Is she.. sick?" Jacob whispered the words to Soren, uncertainty in his voice.​

When he was in these protective arms, it was like everything was a bad dream. Hayden could not see all of it fully. They were images that his sleeping brain conjured from worry. These arms held him close. They shielded him from the scary world. He nodded and pulled away so that they could move. He clung to Josh’s hand. “And they only have to stay there a little while, right? Then can we bring them back here?” He looked at the empty room. “We could get another bed. I’m sure we could find one. Or something comfortable.” He smiled at the thought of all of them camping out on the floor like they were children. There was hope again. Soren turned his attention to Hayden, and he felt his stomach drop. How could Josh let Hayden believe that if he was thinking that Kyra’s struggles were more? His unsure eyes locked with Jacob’s. “We can only hope she’s just sick.” He tried to smile again with the others moving now. “It could be fine.” He hoped it was fine.​

Joshua smiled, feeling Hayden cling to his hand. He bit his lip as he heard that, and looking back on this moment, he made one of many really bad choices. "Yep. They just have to be there for two days and then we can bring them here." Josh agreed, smiling as he turned to lead Hayden to the door. Jacob looked at the other two and sighed, hearing Soren. "What if she's.. sick sick? Like.. those other people?" Jacob asked, trying to keep his voice low as they walked behind Josh and Hayden. Josh did things that Jacob never agreed with, but this.. if this was really what was happening, then he definitely didn't agree with this. At all.​

“Josh…” Soren watched them walk out of the apartment, and he didn’t know what to do. How could he say that to Hayden? Was Soren supposed to play along like nothing was wrong? Maybe there wasn’t anything wrong. Maybe she really was struggling like Hayden. Maybe there were a lot of injuries that were making her less aware. Maybe. But also maybe not. “Two days!” Hayden groaned though that excitement was still in his voice. “That’s so long.” Soren looked back at Jacob. “That’s how long it takes to see if they’re… sick.” He spoke this primarily to Jacob, but Hayden could hear it too. “Sick?” he asked. “I guess that makes sense. Isn’t there medicine around?” His mind blocked all of the bad out of the days that happened. He temporarily forgot about all of it. That Was the only way to cope. Soren bit his lip. He whispered, “I don’t know. She might not be. She might…” but there was a huge weight where the answer was too bad to answer. “We can’t let her…” infect other people.​

Josh chose to ignore his name, he was really hoping that he was wrong. That all she needed was to see Hayden and everything would fall into place. That this was what needed to happen to fix it all. He heard the groan from Hayden as he chuckled, opening the door for him. "Those two days will pass in a flash, you watch." Josh said with a smile though he looked back at Soren, hearing him. He didn't want to correct him, to tell him that no, there was no medicine. No cure. Instead, he led them to the stairs. Jacob looked at Soren and sighed softly, hearing him. "If she's that sick, he's going to be devastated, but.. I know what you're trying to say." Jacob said, almost like he could finish Soren's words without saying it out loud as they made it to the stairs. "But we'll need to be there for Hayden just in case.."​

Hayden huffed and threw his hands up as they made it to the stairs. “Fine. She’s going to hate being cooped up that long. Maybe we can come visit her often while they’re in there.” He smiled back at Jacob and quickly refocused before he could see the concern on Jacob’s and Soren’s faces. “Logan is far more understanding than she is. You know, there was this one time that she pitched a whole fit because she had to wait in her room before she could come downstairs and see a surprise. She only had to wait about fifteen minutes, but she was so loud.” That was a long time ago. “At least she has Logan to keep her together.” Soren really didn’t know what to do about this. Hayden clearly thought that this was going to work out. He wished that Josh warned him of the possibility of even a normal sickness. “Josh… is going to do what he needs to do.” Soren was not sure what exactly he was saying. “He can take care of Hayden. If any of us can, it’s him, right?” Now, that was how it looked. Hayden was the most alive he had been in so many days. That was because of Josh. “Does she know about mom? And your dad?” Hayden’s face fell as they moved. “She told me about dad… but she’s okay. And Logan. And us. That’s what matters.”​

Josh chuckled as he listened to Hayden, sounding so much more like himself than he had in days. "Logan certainly is keeping her together." He agreed before he thought about it. "I'm sure we can visit her often." He added as they headed down the stairs. Jacob looked at Soren, a frown settling on his face as he heard that. "What he needs to do? What he needs to do is not give his partner false hope." Jacob's voice was bitter. He'd seen Hayden first hand these last few days, how broken he seemed. How did Josh not see that? How could he just.. let this go? "I can't believe him." Jacob muttered, his eyes facing forward as they made to the ground floor. Josh looked at Hayden and shook his head. "I didn't get a chance to tell her yet, though I did tell Logan about our dad." Josh said as they stepped outside.​

Soren wished that he could deny what Jacob was saying, but he agreed. He was stuck between two partners with differing opinions on what to do about this situation. There were no good options now that Josh had already said what he had. “I… I can tell her about mom then.” Hayden swallowed and then nodded firmly. “She might not be as upset if I can calm her down.” They frequently took on the burden of telling each other the bad news when they were younger. They always did better with each other. “Two days isn’t so bad. Not really.” He was saying this like he was trying to convince someone else instead of himself. Hayden and Soren moved until they were out of the apartment building. All of Hayden’s hopes paused as he looked around them. This was not what he was expecting even though they had been here before. He was not exactly in his right mind then. Or really ever it seemed. “Oh… where are they?”​

This was an impossible situation, and where one brother thought he was doing right by his partner, the other disagreed. Jacob just shook his head as they stepped outside. Josh heard Hayden and nodded as they stepped into the sunlight. "She might not be. And, no two days isn't so bad." Josh agreed as he noticed Hayden looking around. "This way love. They're at the gates. We can't have them being sick inside here." Josh said as he walked towards the gate where the holding cells were. Jacob was quiet as he walked, glaring at his brother's back every so often as he moved.​

Two days. He could do two days. Hayden followed where Josh led him. He was nervous and excited all at once. He wanted to see his family so badly. He could not help but look at every soldier they passed on the way there. They were no longer in a world that he understood. They were somewhere entirely new. He wasn’t sure how he felt about it. His eyes grew wide as he realized what he was looking at. “They’re… they’re in one of those?” So many people packed into these… cages. He looked back at Josh and then at Soren and Jacob. “For… two days?” There was nothing that Soren felt that he could say to help him. He would not have brought Hayden down there. Jacob was not his worry. Jacob could handle it. But Hayden? Soren had not been there for any of the breakdowns, and he still questioned this decision.​

Josh nodded as they came to the cells, and he paused a moment to think but ultimately decided to keep going. The cells were Logan and Kyra were came into view. “Hayden. Before we get closer, it’s important that you don’t go near them. I know that’s hard, but we don’t know if they are.. sick yet. Two days and then you can hug your sister again.” Josh said, his hand slipping to take Hayden’s. Justin and Darren were still there, guarding the two. Jacob looked at Soren, then at Hayden. He heard Josh’s words and looked up ahead to see Logan and for a moment, the world was a little better. He didn’t know what would happen in the next two days but he hoped that both Logan and Kyra would survive and be fine.​

Kyra was sitting towards the back of the jail cell. She was mostly still except for the occasional pop of her leg that she didn’t seem to notice. It might have looked like normal movement if someone didn’t know her. She did not bounce or kick her legs when sitting. “Why can’t we get close?” Her head snapped up at the voice. It moved like a wild dog’s. Her eyes scanned the area for the source, ears picking up on location better than her sight. She jerked herself upward, body moving too much all at once, and she ran into someone else. She didn’t see them. Honestly, she didn’t even feel them. Her mind was focused. “Hayden?” She pushed her way to the bars. “Hayden?” Her voice quickly became frantic. “Hayden?!” Hayden moved quicker as he heard her. “Kyra! Kyra I’m here!” He was all but running, dragging Josh with him. She looked beat to hell but she was alive. “Oh my god. Are you okay?” Kyra held the bars so tight that her fingers lost all color. “Fine. Been through something else.” Her body fell slightly, but the bars held her up. “You look like you’re doing terribly.” She shot a look to Josh. An unkind one. “The government doesn’t like sleep?” Her head snapped to the side as she almost snarled the words.​

Josh heard Kyra calling for Hayden and he found himself being dragged by his partner to the cell. He stopped them about two feet from the cell. His hand a firm grip on Hayden’s as a reminder. He’d seen her motions, so did Justin. He’d been watching her carefully. He narrowed his eyes at her words. “You don’t know what he’s been through.” Josh spat the words, not appreciating her all but snarled words. He didn’t like this. And he could feel the weight of the pistol on his belt, like a reminder of what had to be done if she.. was sick. For now he’d watch and wait. But he wasn’t letting her out of his sight. Meanwhile Jacob walked over to Logan, keeping that distance. “Hey bro, it’s nice to uh see you.” Jacob’s voice was quiet as Logan nodded. “Yeah. I’m glad your partner got us away from there.” He said sending a grateful look to Soren as Jacob squeezed his loves hand.​
