Hayden Gaines and Soren Truelson
FEDRA Civilian, FEDRA Officer | 24, 35 | Current location ;; Seattle Quarantine Zone

The silence dragged down the mood. It weighed on the air that stifled around them as Soren moved the truck. They passed scene after scene of how the world was falling apart. If the silence did not knock down that positivity, the world around them did. Soren felt like it was his job to fix it, but he didn’t know how. There was so much death and destruction. They could sometimes hear the screams of people who were no longer themselves. He could only hope that their people were not those out there. Eventually, they passed the hospital, turned down the street, and came up on the house. “You ready to find your brother?” It was all Soren could think to say.

As the suitcase closed, covering the people who were gone – mother and father and brother of a family that were his too – Hayden could feel all of that energy seep out of his body. Leave him completely. It fell away to die with the rest of the world. He still smiled. “I’m fine.” He wasn’t. “Thanks.” He stared at the nothing down there another second or so longer before walking away and towards the room. “Tired. I think… Maybe I’ll take a nap.” And close the door. Close everything out. No more people. If no one was there, no one could get hurt. No one could hurt him. He tried not to think about the bodies on the floor.

He watched the destruction around them, the screams of those lost to this infection echoing in the distance. This was too much, the silence was choking him and the destruction was knocking down every little building block of hope he'd tried to build. As they drew closer and closer, he saw the house coming up and he was hit by memories. Parties in the back yard, decorating the front yard, and his mom. His dad. Josh heard the words cut through memories as the truck stopped when they got there. "Yes." Josh said, slipping slowly out of the truck and looking around. He didn't know what he was going to find inside the house.

Jacob looked at Hayden, hearing his words. He shook his head, no. Hayden wasn't fine. He could tell that much and Jacob heard his words. He didn't want to leave his brother alone, not right now. "That's a good idea. But maybe.. maybe you shouldn't be alone." Jacob said, moving after Hayden. He remembered how hard it was to get Hayden up this morning, and he used Kai as well. He didn't want to leave him alone again. "If you don't mind. I'll join you on the floor with a book, just as company." Jacob suggested as he looked at him.

Soren grabbed the gun just in case. He didn’t want to. He wanted to believe that everything would be fine. He wanted to believe that they were both going to be in that house. He wanted to believe that nothing could have touched them. So he closed the truck, locked it, and headed to the house. In an effort to show his positivity, he led the way until they were at the door. “You or me?” he whispered. He may have had hope, but he knew better than to take too much of a chance.

No. Hayden wanted to tell him to leave. He wanted to tell him to go back to his pictures of dead people and books about whatever happy things and leave Hayden to be there. Be here. Be. Alone. “You don’t need to do that.” Be the diplomat, Hayden Liam Gaines. “You can go…” he turned his attention to the suitcases full of treasures, “enjoy everything.” That smile plastered. “I’m okay.” He could be okay. “Really.” Sure. No. But he could lie. As he turned back around, one fell on the other, and he jumped back. Rammed into the doorframe. He lost his balance, and his feet slid out from underneath him as he fell to the floor with a thud.

Josh looked at Soren as he led the way to the door, and he swallowed. The moment of truth was inside here, the moment that he would know if his brother was bitten or not. The moment that Kyra would be inside or not. "I'll go." Josh whispered, opening the door slowly. A gunshot rang out to his left, as he did. His eyes widened as he saw Logan, holding their father's pistol. "Logan.. put the pistol down." Josh whispered as he stepped inside. Logan, eyes watered, dropped the pistol and ran towards Josh as he stepped inside. "Are you okay?" Josh asked softly, as Logan looked up at his younger brother. "I- I'm fine, where's.. where's Jacob and Dad?" "Dad's dead.. and Jacob's safe in the apartments." Josh's voice trembled as Logan gasped softly. "Have you heard from Kyra?" Josh asked Logan, looking around the house.

Jacob heard Hayden's words, and shook his head. "I don't believe you." He said softly, stepping closer to Hayden. He knew his younger brother wasn't handling this outbreak well, but really. was anyone? He saw him jump back as he turned around and saw him ram into the doorframe. "Hayden!" He called, moving quickly to the man now on the ground. Jacob fell to his knees beside him, hands reaching to check on him.

Soren’s military background took over the second he heard that gunshot. He was on the side, looking for whoever it was, when Josh had it handled anyway. He kept the gun up for a moment longer, finally letting out a large sigh as Logan dropped the pistol. This was good. Well, not good. It was good that Logan was okay. That was one less person who was missing. Now to find the sister. Soren was stepping inside as his trained ears heard something outside behind them. He was turning as something large swung at him, and he ducked just in time as whatever it was – maybe a vase or a plant pot – shattered from impact. He reached up and grabbed at the assailant’s arms, pinning a now screaming woman to the side of the entrance. Kyra, who had only been at the house for a couple of hours, was foremost angry and secondly clearly wounded. She was covered in scrapes and soot. Soren, as he held her against the wall, suddenly had a feeling that he knew where she had been. “Get your hands off of me,” she hissed with so much venom that Soren might have listened had he not been trained for this. When he did not immediately move, her leg whipped up, and before he could react appropriately, her foot was in his knee, which made him flinch enough for her to wiggle almost free.

No breath. No air. Everything was gone and away. His chest constricted like people who were suddenly cut off. He writhed where he was, shaking hands raising to his face, unable to grab onto his eyes to claw out the visions because of how little he could stabilize them. The tears ran without his sound. Without the air, he could not make them. He could not distinguish the pain, which in reality was probably nothing more than maybe a bruise to his back. He felt so much without feeling anything at all.

Josh was speaking to Logan when he heard the sound of a vase break on impact and looked back to see Soren struggling with a woman. His new instincts, honed after that hospital, let go of Logan and he moved towards them. His eyes widened as he saw who Soren had pinned to the wall. "Kyra?!" His voice was incredulous and happy, even though he could see the scrapes and soot on her body. "Soren, step back." Josh said, as he looked at her. "Kyra are you okay?"

Jacob gently moved Hayden into a sitting position, and wrapped his arms around him. He kept his arms so that those hands would hit his arms instead of his own face. "Come on Hayden, come back to us." He said softly trying to get him to breathe. He needed to him to breathe. "Breathe for me. Breathe for Josh. Breathe for Kai."

There were several things happening all at once that made Soren feel a bit dizzy. One, this woman looked like she had been to hell and back with how unkempt she was. Two, she was the missing sister. Three, she looked like she was going to kill him. Four, Josh was telling him to back away even though she was ready to kil them. Five, as Soren turned to look at Josh, he looked at Logan instead, and for a moment, Soren thought he was Jacob. That was enough for Kyra to ram him away and run inside the house. She picked up the gun that Logan dropped. “Who are you?” she demanded as she pointed her fun at Soren. Her eyes narrowed. “Are you… are you their neighbor?” Soren blinked back his confusion and tried to regain his wits. “Yes. The neighbor. We’ve met before. When you weren’t trying to kill me-“ “Are you one of them too?”

The arms made him jump, but there was nowhere for him to run. Instead, Hayden leaned into the touch, hands trying to reach for things that didn’t exist. He squeezed Jacob’s arms. Breathe. He couldn’t breathe. In his mind, he was screaming, because he couldn’t breathe. Not for Jacob. Not for Josh. Not for- Kai. Kai. He focused on that little face and those beautiful eyes. That big smile. Slowly, he could breathe though not necessarily well.

Josh wasn't expecting for Kyra to ram Soren away when he looked at Logan, and saw her go for the gun. He didn't want to draw her attention to him, so he slowly worked his way around. He hoped that by her talking to Soren would keep her distracted. Once he was close enough, he sprinted and grabbed the pistol, shoving it up and away from the other man in an attempt to take it away. He'd heard her words as he'd run and his brow furrowed. "Drop the gun and we can talk." His voice was stern as he tried to get the gun away from her.

Jacob felt the jump but refused to react to it. He heard that slight breathing and hummed, perfect. "Kaiden needs you to come back to him. Who else is going to teach him about sharks and run down the halls knocking on doors?" He asked, rocking them slightly.

She glared at Soren with hate. No. Fear. She was afraid. He could tell she had also never used a gun before. Even if she was afraid and tried to shoot him, she would not be able to do it well. If he were lucky, she would have bad aim. If he weren’t- It was fine, because Josh was going to grab her. “One of-“ Josh reached her then, and she flailed, panicked. The gunshot rang through the building as the gun was taken from her hands. She yelled but her voice died away as soon as she heard Josh’s authority. That was new for her. She glared at Josh. “Where. Is. Hayden?”

Come back. Sharks. Knock knock. A little giggle that bounced off of walls and onto smiling faces of neighbors. Breathe for him. As he squeezed Jacob’s arms, he felt the ring. Sharks in an aquarium with Josh watching beside him. A little boy behind a mother’s legs. Kaiden smiling back at him from behind Emily. Josh’s arms around Hayden’s shoulders. Around his waist. Sharks swimming through glass. One body falling on another. He clenched harder. It was so hard to breathe.

Josh emptied the clip from the pistol and tucked it into his belt, looking at her. He crossed his arms and saw her glaring at him. "He's safe and alive in the apartments with Jacob. Now, what do you mean by one of them?" He asked, eyes watching her as Logan stayed near Josh. He was so unsure of what was happening, and he had dried tear trails down his face from hearing about the loss of his father. He looked at her, seeing how she looked and he had to wonder what had happened to her. "What happened to you?"

Jacob rocked them gently, feeling Hayden squeeze his arms. "That's it buddy, you've got it. Sharks and rings. Kaiden needs to learn about them, and you've got all these books to read to him too." Jacob said, feeling that hard clench on his arms. He was determined to help his brother no matter what.

“In the what?” Kyra seemed thrown by this new knowledge. Her glare did not bite so hard for a moment. With Josh’s continued words, all that venom came back, and Soren wondered how she could be the sister to Hayden who seemed so sweet and kind. He knew that Kyra had always been a bit of a firecracker, but this seemed liked a lot. “What happened to a whole lot of people,” she hissed. “I just didn’t die.” She backed away and stomped into the house. When she was further, she tore at her hair and shook it out. Debris fell to the floor. She swooped herself back up and pawed at her hands , face, and arms. She could only shake so much away. Finally, she looked at them again. Her gaze settled on Josh. “What? Did he make you military too now?” She vaguely remembered their neighbor being some form of that.

Shark. Ring. Josh. Kai. Jacob. Breathing. Joshua and Soren retrieving boxes of things for the people in the apartments. Breathing. Them retrieving pictures for Jacob. Breathing. Kyra on the phone telling him that their dad was dead. A hiccup in the breath. His mother and their father. A tear. Everything that fell apart around them. He cried. His body collapsed into the arms that held him and he cried. He cried to release all that pent up emotion and fear. It was not going to fix things. It would certainly not save him from how he would be later. But for now, maybe he would be better. He sobbed into Jacob and for the first time was glad that Kai was not around.

Josh bit his lip as he watched her, hearing those hissed out words. He knew Kyra had always been a firecracker, but this was a whole new level. He watched her shake her hair out, and pawed at her hands, face and arms. "He didn't make me anything. I did this for Hayden. For you. Our family. To save them. Hayden's housed in a nice apartment safe and sound with Jacob because of this. If you come with us, both of you, we can take you to them and to safety." He told her, watching her carefully. "After a two day waiting period to make sure you aren't sick."

Jacob continued to hold onto Hayden, letting him work through everything that's going on. He heard the hiccup, and then the crying. He wrapped his arms tighter around the body that collapsed into him. His head rested on top of Hayden's as he rubbed his back and hummed softly. "Let it all out buddy, all of it." He whispered, holding his brother tightly.

Kyra was not against the military. She was angry. She was so angry. It was almost an uncontrollable kind of anger. No, she could control herself. She knew that she could. She took in a deep breath and let it out as she thought about that. “You have safe apartments. Couldn’t have mentioned that before everyone else died?” So she was still angry. She swallowed it and shoved her arms over her chest. “What exactly does a waiting period mean? What do you want to do with me and your brother?” In case Josh forgot now that he had a fancy, padded suit to protect him.

Hayden cried for minutes. Maybe hours? It could have been days. He cried until it hurt to cry, and then he kept going. He cried for everyone they lost and everyone that was probably lost. He cried for them. For everyone in this apartment. For the world. He remembered sharks and he cried for them and how he would probably never see them again either. Eventually, the crying slowed and finally stopped. He breathed as he laid against his brother. Thank the world for Jacob. “I’m sorry,” he whispered hoarsely.

Josh looked at her, biting back his anger and frustration. "I did not set these up, and we are setting up safety for civilians too. As for you and Logan. We have padded waiting areas for everyone. Everyone has to do it until we find a better way to find out if people are infected. You will be in those cells for two days, but we can bring Hayden and Jacob to see you after you are inside them." Josh explained, narrowing his eyes at Kyra.

Jacob kept going, humming and rocking. He knew this was a lot, knew that there was more uncertainty in the world than ever before. It was terrifying and scary, and they'd already lost so much. He didn't like it, but what could he do about it? They would all have to get used to this new FEDRA controlled world and be there for each other while their soldier boys keep them safe. "It's okay bud, I don't mind." He said softly, feeling Hayden lay against him as the crying stopped.

Civilians too. Kyra should not have been so angry, but she was. Furious perhaps. It was a blinding kind of rage. She was going to let it loose on everyone. She was going to scream. This was an unusual amount of anger. She had never crossed this level before. Of course, she hadn’t witnessed that many deaths before either. She was so ready to unleash all of her wrath on this new military man who thought he could hide away her brother, when it occurred to her that he said that she could see Hayden again. She had to be trapped in a padded cell like a prisoner, but Josh would bring her Hayden. That was all she cared about. Hayden was the only person she had left. Sure, she had the rest of their family, Josh and Logan. Jacob too apparently. But Hayden was it really. Finally she turned to Logan. “Guilty until proven innocent. Fine.” Giving up now, she sighed and fell into a chair. Exhausted. And yet, there was some level of energy that could not be quelled. Somewhere. Down.

Hayden believed him. He believed that Jacob didn’t mind. It must have been the nurse in him. He was so good with the patients. He was so good with patience. He was quiet a while longer as he let his body calm. He sat up, eyes bleary and red. “I should… should take that nap.” He was so tired, especially after all of this. Everything felt so heavy. He barely could drag himself up and to the bed where he sat on the edge. He thought about how Josh was going to bring their family home. He needed to think only of that.

Josh merely stood there, his hand on his hip, the other close to the pistol. He might’ve unloaded it, but he could still use it as a weapon if he had to. Then he saw her fall into a chair and looked back at Soren. “Let’s get them in the back of the truck. We need to move now before those shots bring any more.. friends here.” Josh said, looking at Logan. His brother was still clean looking, he’d never left the house after he came home from the hospital.

Jacob rubbed Hayden’s side gently and sighed as he held him, before he watched him sit up. “Relax. Our soldier boys will be back soon with our family. You sleep right there if it’s easier. I’ll wake you when it’s fine to get up.” He added. But he didn’t want to leave Hayden alone and he doubted that after that, he’d have the energy to move.

Soren only watched as this happened, because he wasn’t sure what was going to happen. He needed to be ready if the worst came to be, especially with how Josh had been. Would he be able to do something if it turned out poorly for them? Her anger seemed like a lot, though she seemed calmer now. Maybe it really had been whatever she had seen or gone through. He moved closer to her. “Okay, let’s-“ “No.” She was glaring up at him again, and the look in her eyes was unnerving. Something felt off. He couldn’t say, because he didn’t know her. He thought it could be a bone weariness. “I don’t trust you. I don’t know you.” She stood up, looking even more exhausted than when she sat, her leg giving out a little before she caught herself and stood with more confidence. “I know him.” She nodded to Josh. “I think.” Soren raised his hands and backed away. “Sure. I’m just the driver.” He walked to the door and looked out to make sure no one was coming. No one for now. “To the truck then?”

Everything was so slow. It was all moving too fast and now the world was in slow motion. They were slogging through time. He tried to see the smiling faces of people he would see soon. He was so tired. His eyes slid closed as he sat there, and immediately he was greeted with the unwanted visions once again. His eyes shot open as his heart pound faster. Fine. He was fine. He nodded. “Okay.” Breathe, Hayden. Breathe. “Okay okay.” He crawled onto the bed and fell into a curl, pulling the blankets around him tightly. He stared out at the walls. Okay. His eyelids fell closed again, and they shot back open. He was so tired, but he didn’t want to see them. But he needed to sleep.

The longer Josh looked at Kyra, the more something felt.. wrong. The glare on her face when Soren went near her was harsher than he’d ever seen before. He saw her leg almost give out and his eyes narrowed, watching her. He nodded to Soren and Logan. “Logan, go with him. We’ll be right behind you.” Josh said as he looked at Kyra. “Come along Kyra.” He added, bending down and grabbing the clip from the gun and reloaded the pistol as he stepped towards the door after the other two. Something was gnawing at him about Kyra and her behavior. He just didn’t want to think it was anything more than being tired and stressed.

Jacob moved when Hayden did, following him to the bedroom and sat down near the door. He wasn’t about to leave his brother alone. Not really. Here he could help if Hayden needed him too. His thoughts traveled to the boys and wondered if they’d found the rest of their family.

Soren smiled at Logan as they moved to the truck. “I’m sorry to be meeting again under these not so great circumstances. I wish we could have brought you earlier.” He unlocked the truck. “But at least we’ve got you now. And after that waiting period, we’re going to find you a good place to be.” He started up the truck. “Jacob is going to be so excited to see you. And Hayden too.” Kyra didn’t like this new version of Josh. She felt a change in him too, though it didn’t matter. They were different changes in them both. For her, she could tell something was different. She had less control. It started a little while ago, though it made sense given her circumstances. As she followed them out, her body in a constant war between exhaustion and the need to fight, she slowed as they neared the truck. “Josh?” It was almost her voice. Her usual one. “He’s really okay? Because Dad…” She closed her eye. “Isn’t. And mom?” She wasn’t sure.

Hayden fought his own mind for far too long. He rolled often. He hid. He struggled. He even thrashed when he finally fell asleep. His dreams were as haunted as always. He thrashed as he ran from monsters. From demons. Things so close to human that it was terrifying. The one that scared him the most was the one he loved the most.

Logan looked at Soren as they moved and he smiled softly. “It’s fine. It really hasn’t been horrible in there. Only once did something try and get in. But thank you, I can’t wait to see Jacob again. And thanks for getting us.” Logan said as he climbed up into the back of the truck. Josh walked with Kyra and looked at her as they got to the truck. “He’s okay. Promise. I’ve made sure of that. As for your mom. She was.. caught in the downtown area as they cleared it out. Both her and our dad.” Josh explained as he waited for her to get into the truck before he climbed into the passengers seat.

Jacob didn’t know what to do. So he moved, he climbed on the bed and wrapped his body around Hayden. He started humming, hoping to give his mind something nice to focus on instead of the horrors he could sense that his brother was seeing.

Her entire body fell at the words. That was what she was afraid of. That the rest of the family that she couldn’t find got caught in the explosions. Cleared it out? What did that mean? She wanted to argue this. So much of her wanted to run at Josh, push him against that truck, place her hand on his throat and demand answers. So much of her also wanted to crumple to the ground and die with everyone else. How could she have so much and so little will all at the same time? She groaned and thought about seeing Hayden. She had to be there for him. After the phone call that simply went dead, she was so worried about him. So she climbed into the truck beside Logan and tried not to say or do anything that could ruin that single chance for her. Soren waited for everyone to get in the truck so that he could get it running and start their journey back. That was of course when the infected came out. Thankfully, they were in an armored truck and had speed on their side. “It’s not too long of a drive everyone. This is what I think is going to happen. This is new, and I know it won’t be fun, but it’s for the best. When we get there, you’re going to be taken by some other guys who are going to make sure that you’re okay. We don’t know everything or even a lot about this infection yet, so we’ve set up these holding cells. They really aren’t great, so I’m sorry about that. But you only have to be there long enough for us to tell you aren’t gonna try and kill your friends.” He smiled at everyone through the rearview mirrors. “Within reason of course.”

Hayden settled slightly with the touch of someone there to protect and comfort him. It was rough, though, and that was how it was going to stay. Rough. If only it were for the first few nights. If only what was to come was not worse. If only.

Logan sat there, eyes down at his feet as he felt the truck begin to move. He didn’t even look on at the screams of the infected. What was there for him? He thought of his dad, his mom, Jacob, Josh. So much had changed so quickly and all he wanted to do was run and hide. Hide away from it all. But he couldn’t. He didn’t have anywhere to hide. Josh was silent as they drove, everyone heard Soren but Logan and Josh just.. sat there. Quiet. Still. Josh had no idea what would happen when they got to the cells. But he hoped that this would be good for Hayden. To see Kyra and Logan happy. And healthy. A few scrapes but nothing that can’t be fixed.

Jacob stayed there. And he’d continue to hum. He hoped in his mind that things would get a little better once they knew Kyra and Logan were safe and home.

The silence was as thick as it was when it was only Soren and Josh. They could not escape how the world made it heavy. Soren tried to keep talking to keep up the mood. He talked about the apartments and what FEDRA was working on. He talked about the possibility of using the stadium. It probably wouldn’t change a whole lot other than allowing them to expand. The efforts were useless for Kyra. She stayed quiet as well. Every now and then, her hand would twitch like a tick. Only she never had ticks before. She did not even notice that she was doing it. Soon they were arriving at the QZ. This time, they were routed to a different area to take Logan and Kyra.

In his restless sleep, everything stilled. For a while. For now. Like he was prepapring in the calm for the rest of the storm.

Once they arrived at the QZ and got rerouted, Josh looked out the window. Soldiers stood in front of the cells. Two were open and prepared for them. The guys at the gate must’ve let them know. Once they parked, Josh slipped out and two soldiers with protective clothing stepped up. Justin and another named Darren. “We’re here to bring these two to their cells.” Justin said, holding the gun to his chest as was Darren. Logan slipped out and Darren took hold of his upper arm to steer him over and into a cell. Justin moved to do the same to Kyra. Josh stepped back, arms crossed as he looked at Soren. Then he looked back at the others. His face was cold like stone as he watched Logan set in a cell and the door locked, keeping him in it.

Honestly, Soren wished that they could have put Logan and Kyra into the waiting cells. That may have gone over better than what happened. When they parked, Kyra was already upset. When she saw these two armed men with full gear on, she was more than on edge. “I am not a prisoner she hissed. Don’t touch him!” She moved to defend Logan when other other man was doing the same to her. She pushed at him, and though she had this renewed energy, it was only in part of her body. She looked back at Josh and glared. “Bring me my brother, Joshua.” As soon as she was in the cell, she shoved Justin away as hard as she could, her other arm bouncing like it had been hit even though it hadn’t. She rammed into the bars and looked at Josh like he was someone entirely different than she knew. “Bring him to me now or so help me, I will break every promise I made him.”
