Realistic or Modern The Bronze Locket

Fausta listened quietly to Duncan's words, and let out a long, relieved sigh as he finished his thoughts. His lips were soft against her knuckles and his hand was warm upon her stomach. She tugged at his hand until he found his way next to her, and then she tucked her legs under herself and leaned her head against his shoulder. Fausta gathered her own thoughts as the sky bloomed in all the evening colors.

"I understand, amore. I do not know if what I'm saying will make sense, so please forgive me if it does not." She laced her fingers through his and turned her chin upon his shoulder to look into his face. "As far as I feel, right now, there is still...only me. There is no weight here, yet. I know what the doctor has told me to be true, in my heart, but..." She placed her free hand over her stomach, struggling to explain correctly. "It does not feel real yet, yes? I think, when I know the kicking and the cravings I will be different. I will send you to do the protecting in my stead. Yes?" Duncan slid his larger hand over hers, and a small, gentle smile graced his beautiful features. Fausta breathed another sigh of relief, and nuzzled into his neck, savoring his scent. "We will be having to move up the wedding, though. While I can still fit into a dress."

His laughter rang out and he held her close, and finally she smiled. Fausta knew she had made the right choice. Her heart was finally steady, as if she was meant to be there in that moment. Like her whole life had built her up to it. "<I love you, too.>" She whispered into his skin, wrapping one arm around his neck and pulling herself into his lap.
~

Hugh's nervousness was strange--she'd never seen him quite like this before. But he kissed her sweetly on the brow and then knelt before her, his face alight with happiness and hope as he asked her to be his wife. A burst of emotions opened in her chest, and stormed over her so powerfully Adelaide found herself almost dizzy. She lurched forward and threw her arms around him, tears forming at the edges of her eyes. Her voice warbled from her lips in a tight, broken whisper.

"Oh, Hugh, I--" She pulled away, suddenly feeling like a vile creature. Covering her face with her hands she sobbed, the sound scratching at her sore throat in an almost creaking noise. Adelaide calmed herself enough to tear her hands away from her face and hold tight to her neck. "Th-there is nothing more in this world I want than to be your wife." She said. Hugh's face lit up even more, and he began to reach toward her hand. Adelaide yanked it away, and scrambled from the chair, falling down upon her backside. Hugh was quite alarmed, but as he moved to help her, she fled again, until her back was pressed firmly against the house.

Hugh stood before her, worried and confused. Before he could ask what was happening, Adelaide began to cry again, her knees going weak. "I can't, Hugh. I-I'm so sorry. I can't give you what you need. I'm so so sorry.." Adelaide slid down the wall as her knees gave way, and crumpled into herself. As if she could become small enough to vanish before his very eyes. That would be better than disappointing him like this.

His world tore away from him, the ground dropped and Hugh felt his heart crack in two, there was nothing that could have prepared him for her denial. Adelaide backed away from him like his mere touch might infect her. He felt torn as panic overtook her again and she crumpled down into a ball on the cold ground. Hugh found he could do nothing but stare for a long moment. His ears were ringing.

"I cant."

Her words repeated over and over again in his mind. He could feel the walls around his heart begging to rise in time to stop the lump in his throat and the burn in his eyes that threatened tears. He had been so sure, so confident in the power of what they shared, and now he had pushed much too far. His hand curled into a fist around the ring the cloth of the handkerchief saving his palm from the metal digging into his skin.

"I see..." His words were dull in the air, the deep blue of his eyes sorrowful. "I apologize for assuming this was also something you wanted." The cool he was keeping was rapidly disappearing, replacing instead with anger and hurt. "I wish you well then." His voice rising in pitch on the last word. Unable to handle it anymore Hugh turned away and walked out of the gardens. His boots crunching over the gravel path as he hurriedly made his way back inside.

~

Duncan and Fausta were talking wedding again, wondering when the best date would be when Hugh entered the study. The younger brother gave the lovers a grim look, his mouth a thin line and his eyes rimmed red as he struggled to stop the tears.

"F-forgive me." Hugh muttered. "I just came for this." Hugh plucked up a brown bottle off the brown cart. Duncan and Fausta were up on their feet and caging the man from leaving them.

"Where is Adelaide?" Fausta asked sharply, clearly ready to jump into action.

"In the garden." Hugh said as he pop of the cork came from the bottle. He didn't bother with a glass and took a deep swig. Duncan caught Fausta's eye and nodded his head to the door, indicating that she should see to her friend. Fausta got the message and left without another word, her skirts swishing in her haste, her shoes still forgotten on the ground near the chaise.

"What happened then?" Duncan demanded, his patience was thin this day and if he needed to handle the cousin he was more than happy to lay some frustrations out on the thin man. Hugh took another few long pulls from the bottle before wiping away at his mouth with the back of his hand.

"She said no." Hugh's voice was shaky with the confession, as if it was still settling in. "I asked and she reacted as if I had burned her. I made her cry and she seemed disgusted with the mere notion. I suppose I should have known..." Hugh let out a bitter laugh, the anger and the brandy fueling him to smash the bottle into the fireplace. Duncan jumped into action immediately and shoved his brother down, tackling him to the ground.

"Come off it Hugh, Adelaide loves you. I'm certain you misunderstand!" Duncan said as Hugh struggled against his hold, but Duncan held him down and pinned him. "Enough throwing of things as well, what are you child?" Duncan chided, laughing when his brother grumbled from beneath him. "I'm certain Fausta will come in any moment now and tell us it was all just a big miscommunication."

Fausta flew down the hallways and out into the garden. It took her a moment to spot the huddled form of her dearest friend in the growing darkness. The small woman's body shook with the force of her crying. Fausta knelt down beside her, murmuring softly in Italian and gently running her hand along Adelaide's arm. Finally, she was calm enough to speak, and in a broken whisper confessed her reason for the rejection. Fausta sat back on her heels and laughed, her head tilting back towards the sky.

"Oh, amore, is that all?" At the woman's shocked look, she shook her head and pulled Adelaide up as she stood. "Come." Fausta lead her back inside, and pulled her into the study. Upon seeing Hugh, Adelaide tried to flee, but Fausta held her firmly in place, Adelaide's back against her chest. "Speak." She commanded. Her tone left no room for argument. She gave her own lover a look as the other couple eyed each other uneasily, both exhausted from tears and high emotions. Everything will be fine soon.
~

Adelaide stood frozen in Fausta's hold, staring at the disheveled Hugh with wide, terrified eyes. After several excruciating heartbeats of silence, her shoulders sagged. Burying her head in her hands, she spoke, her throat raw.

"...I-I...I'm barren..." The confession fell from her lips and she felt her face burn with shame. Tears fell from her eyes again even though she had no energy to cry. "It was wicked of me to hide it. I know. I know I can't ask you to forgive me." her words shook, and Adelaide took a deep breath to steady herself. "I'm sorry. I couldn't bear the thought of losing you, not like this. After everything we've been through... I never thought you'd propose. You-You'd always been so against marriage. I thought we would go on living like this forever." Adelaide picked her head up out of her hands and saw the brothers there, frozen on the floor in a tangle as they listened. Duncan looked as if he pitied her terribly, and Hugh's mouth hung open, slightly.

"But you deserve better. You deserve a real family, Hugh. I can't give that to you. I've never been able to give you anything, other than trouble. I'm sorry I was selfish. Please, I'll leave tomorrow. I'll tell Charles to pack my things. I'm so sorry." Adelaide felt again the urge to run, but turned instead into Fausta's embrace. Burying herself into the soft fabric of her dress, Adelaide held her breath, wishing she could go deaf for just a moment. She couldn't bear to hear him scorn her.

(Think I may have found Hugh and Addy's Theme song haha, came on in a playlist and the lyrics just fit so perfect.)

Adelaide's words brought a whole new range of emotions over Hugh, he lay limp on the floor for a long moment, Adelaide made her promises to leave and Fausta held her friend tightly. Suddenly Hugh's arm lifted and he shoved his brother back, making Duncan land on his rear with a small 'oof.' Scrambling to his feet Hugh approached Fausta and Adelaide carefully, he kept his eyes on Fausta wondering if she would lash out at him like a mother lioness protecting her cub. His hand lifted and gently his warm palm settled on Adelaide's shoulder.

"I want to marry you Adelaide." The words still felt right, and so Hugh decided to repeat them. "This news does not make you less of a woman, or less of a future wife. I want this for us because quite frankly there is no one that understands and loves me quite like you do. I thought perhaps we might be parents but truly that was not my motive when I asked you. I apologize for losing my temper, I did not think to seek further understanding..." Hugh trailed off and his head dipped as his hand slipped off her shoulder to rest at his side. "All I want is to be your husband, I would never demand anything more."

~

Duncan remained where he was on the floor, his heart aching for the two lovers. Why was it the world seemed throw all the burdens on these two? He thought of Fausta and how lucky they had been for the ease and splendor of falling in love. He knew deep in his heart that Hugh and Adelaide were meant for one another, he dared to dream of the peace they deserved. Blinking away a small tear Duncan let himself rise from the floor and shoved his hands into his pockets. He knew it was likely more polite to leave the room but curiosity and the urge to protect this family he had grown to love kept his feet rooted where they were.

(GIRL THAT SONG 😭 😭 😭 )

Adelaide froze when Hugh's soft words rang throughout the quiet room. His hand came up to touch her and she was overwhelmed with the relief that flooded through her body. Shaking, she released Fausta and turned slowly. Her eyes were rimmed red and her face was tear-stained, but she took the few steps to close the distance and replied.

"I want to be your wife, Hugh. Please, forgive me for how I've acted. I would love nothing more than to marry you." At her words, Hugh's head lifted and a radiant smile bloomed on his face. He wrapped his arms around her tightly and spun her around. Everyone in the room burst into laughter, and Duncan, after giving a shout, caught a servant and asked for Champaign to celebrate. Hugh buried his face into her hair and whispered sweet words, with their chests pressed together she could feel how wildly his heart was beating. Hers was much the same, and she wrapped her arms around his neck and smiled until her face ached.

The drinks came, and everyone settled down. Fausta and Duncan sat together on the chaise, and Hugh seemed unwilling to part with her just yet, so he sat her down on his lap when he took the plush chair opposite.

"To marriage, and happiness together." Duncan said warmly. They made the toast, though Fausta didn't drink. Hugh slipped the ring upon her finger and Adelaide giggled like a little girl, enchanted by it's beauty. "It's breathtaking, Hugh." She murmured, meeting his gaze with a soft smile. Her lover looked deliriously happy, and Adelaide's whole body felt warm with joy. She never imagined she could feel such happiness.
~

Finally, the two idiots before them were promised to one another. Fausta shook her head and rolled her eyes, laughing along when the tension spilled out of the room. Duncan ordered drinks, and they watched together as the other couple embraced, giddy with joy. The group settled down and Duncan graciously drank for the both of them--though Fausta was sure it was no great hardship for him.

"I suppose there is only one thing to do." She stated, and all eyes turned to her. "A double wedding, no? It seems only fitting, since we brought each other together." She cackled. "Let's see what that man has to say now." Adelaide perked up and looked to Hugh. Fausta looked to Duncan.

"What do you think, angel?"

Fausta declared the idea proudly and with a most jovial smile. Her laugh filled the room and Hugh's gaze refocused to see Adelaide looking at him, her eyes wide with hope and her mouth curved up in anticipation. The back of Hugh's neck tingled and he realized that in this moment he felt more at home than he had ever felt in his life, Those that stood before him were his family and in the time they had been together they had transformed Westwoods into a home. A snort of air left his nostrils and Hugh broke into a wide smile.

"A double wedding it is." Hugh agreed. "The sooner the better." He added as an afterthought. His arms squeezed around Adelaide as she broke into a delighted cheer and pressed kisses over his mouth, cheeks and nose.

~

"Indeed the sooner the better." Duncan said, setting down his own drink and leaning into Fausta, his arm draped around her waist. He wished dearly to share the news of a new family member on the way, but there seemed something a little sad in sharing the news with Adelaide who had just shared her own news. He found himself planning ask Fausta for her opinion on involving the two in their children's lives as much as possible. However for now he didn't wish to add more to the moment, his mind was strangely clear despite all the excitement and it focused on the future. Duncan finished the last of his drink and pressed a kiss to Fausta's cheek before sliding away from her and towards the piano in the corner of the room. It had been a moment since he been able to place and as he settled down to flip open the cover over the keys he wondered what the dreaded cousin was up to at this moment. Would Perseus be prepared for the four of them, especially now with these bonds to be solidified in front of god and country.

His fingers moved over the keys plucking out a small tune, as he did he noticed one of Adelaide's pieces sitting on the music stand. He studied it for a moment before calling the tune with his fingers. Glancing over at Adelaide he saw she had stopped her rain of kisses to look over at him. Her eyes were alight with life and love, and he beamed at her.

"Well now, I do believe you and I must play a song at this wedding." Duncan said, his eyes glancing up to his fiancé as Fausta leaned against his back.

"I concur!" Hugh said, the excitement clear in his voice, and idea occurred to him and he scratched his chin thoughtfully. "Shall I send Joseph with our announcement to be placed in the papers?"

The night passed in happy chatter--all four of them now throwing out ideas for the wedding. They agreed to have Joseph put in the announcement with the afternoon paper the next day. The would meet with different vendors throughout the week to decide on food, cake and invitations. Perseus would be over the next morning to 'finish the previous discussion'. Adelaide and Fausta made plans to get dresses ordered, and Duncan and Adelaide went through several songs together. None fit their fancy just yet, but they were gathering ideas. As the happy couples went up to bed and called goodbyes, the night clouded over gently as it began to snow.

The dogs wound through Hugh's legs as they made their way to the bed, he laughed. Adelaide sat before the vanity in her nightdress, removing her makeup. Hugh stripped down and settled on the bed with a happy sigh.

"Angel," She said "I've been thinking about something."

"Oh?" He titled his head at her curiously, his long hair falling gently over his neck. His beautiful blue eyes regarded her through the mirror, and Adelaide felt a light blush bloom.

"Well, we'll need to give them a wedding gift, yes? What do you think about.." She fiddled with her hair nervously and took a calming breath. "Giving them Ivydowns?" She met his gaze again, with baited breath.
~
Fausta threw herself into the soft sheets, muzzling down into her pillow with a contented noise. She felt the bed creak under her lover's added weight and tilted her face up so she could appraise him with one eye.

"<We will tell them tomorrow, yes? After we get this sorted.>" She could see him visibly relax, despite her muffled speech. It was obvious it had been weighing heavily on his mind. "<Have you anything to give them? The only thing I can think of his wine.>" She mumbled, burying her face back into the fabric. He let out a loud laugh, and she could hear the clunk of his shoes onto the floor. Fausta felt the warmth of his body as Duncan cuddled up next to her, placing kisses upon her hair and running his hand along her back.

Adelaide's idea settled over Hugh like a warm summer sun beam. The thought filled him with joy and he looked at his future wife with pure adoration. She looked back at him from the vanity mirror, her bottom lip tucked between her teeth as nervously twirled a strand of hair between her fingers. Leaving his spot on the bed, Hugh moved to stand behind her, the dogs moved with him and Hugh smiled warmly at her in the mirror. Oberon laid his large narrow head on Adelaide's knee while Tatiana panted happily next to Hugh's leg. He bent his head to press a kiss to the top of her head.

"I don't know what I did right to deserve such a kind and selfless woman. That's a splendid idea." He straightened and his mind remembered the cousin. "I'm sure Perseus would be thrilled with the idea of property being signed away from him." There was a quirk of mischief in his smile as he took Adelaide's hand and helped her to her feet once her nighttime routine was done. He drew her into his arms and kissed her before continuing. "I love it, and I love you... wife." He hesitated before using the word, testing it. He laughed as Adelaide blushed a deep red at the word. Unable to resist her sweetness any longer Hugh led Adelaide towards the bed and spent long moments worshiping the goddess in his life.

~

"<Tomorrow we certainly will share the news.>" Duncan agreed as he finished undressing, he curled into his fiancé when finished and breathed in her scent. His hands and lips moved over spots he knew well as he considered what sort of gift the couple may like, the idea occurred just as he was tracing the dip of her hip. "<Perhaps we have two things that we can give them.>" At his words Fausta turned in his arms so that she could gaze at his face in the soft evening candlelight. At peace with everything he would ever need right next to him Duncan closed his eyes before he spoke.

"I wonder if it would be in poor taste to ask them to be god parents. The idea keeps moving through my mind and truly there is no one else I can see suited to the task." Nestling into Fausta Duncan settled an arm around her middle and drew her into his embrace. His nose was pressed against her cheek and he traced the skin there.

"Our youngest brother John, he used to reside in a small home up in London. After his passing it was left to me, its a small little apartment. Unbeknownst to Hugh, mother used the apartment as a place to store some of her more precious items. It was a little to hard to be there..." Duncan admitted softly. "There was too much of the both of them there, I wasn't ready to go through any of it, so I often spent my time at bars or other establishments to avoid it, however it's filled with all sorts of little treasures." Duncan trailed off, not sure how to express fully that he felt Hugh and Adelaide might find joy within the items there.

Adelaide laughed at Hugh's little jab at her sour cousin, and when he swept her up into his arms and called her 'wife' her heart nearly stopped. He looked at her with a reverence almost holy as he took her to bed. When they had finished with each other after a blissful eternity, Adelaide curled herself into his bare chest with a contented sigh. Gently running her fingers through his hair to move it from his face, Adelaide pressed her lips to his ear and whispered softly.

"Sweet dreams, my husband.." Hugh, through his sleepy eyes, smiled in joy and held her tighter as they drifted off together.
~

Fausta listened quietly as Duncan spoke--the old pain was still clear in his voice. But so was the new happiness. She smiled and covered his face in kisses before settling back down into his arms.

"Amore, those both sound perfect." She replied "I think it will be wonderful to give them such things. They will be delighted." She assured him, and felt her lover relax into her. She kissed him again, and the two spent much of the night simply talking in the dark--trading secrets and hopes like young children.
~

The next morning, Adelaide rose early and left Hugh to sleep under the pile of dogs. She dressed and took breakfast in her study. Charles retreated the deed of Ivydowns and she signed it, then placed it in an envelope for later. At half past ten, she sent servants to rouse the rest of the house and set the rest about to do the usual chores. At eleven the others joined her, and took their meal in the sunroom as well. Fausta and Duncan still seemed to be waking, eating and drinking sluggishly.

Hugh joined them after letting the dogs out into the garden. He pressed a light kiss to her cheek as he sat down and took a plate, looking refreshed and happy.

"I'm glad it seemed that everyone slept well." Adelaide joked, to small groans from the other couple. "I hope you finish returning from the dead by the time our visitor arrives."

At the mention of Perseus the mood in the sunroom changed, despite the cheery lighting and the delicious food the mood was soured a little at the potential drama on the way. Hugh took a bite of an apple and considered their plan of action.

"Brave man to return after the events of yesterday." He mentioned to the group, making Duncan snort with laughter. Fausta straightened at the mention and she and Hugh shared a conspiratorial smile. "Adelaide and I spoke briefly of what we mean to do the previous night. With the announcement to hit the papers this eve it will be publicly expected for myself to take over the Lovelocke business. I do this in name only, Adelaide shall continue business as usual." He reached over to lace his fingers with Adelaide's.

"Unfortunate business this; but I do find that the end result for the both of you is rather enjoyable." Duncan joked, as he spoke he reached up to rub at the corner of his eye. He looked most pleased when he managed to find the offending bit of sleep left over there that had made him heavy lidded, as he did so he missed the exasperated look from Hugh.

"I say this because I want it understood I do not wish to take Addy's freedoms and business from her." He muttered, a deep red settling in his cheeks.

"Hush Hugh, everyone here knows quite well that you are capable of no such thing." Duncan winked at Adelaide and was about to speak again when Joseph cleared his throat in the doorway.

"A Mr. Lovelocke to see you ma'm" It was clear from the gritted tone of his voice that Joseph was less than pleased with their current visitor.

"The bastard is early." Duncan sighed, throwing his napkin on the table.

"Indeed sir." Joseph quipped, turning on his heel and leaving. Hugh knew the man would leave Perseus waiting in the hall and smiled knowing that the staff of Westwood was as enamored with Adelaide as he was. With a small grunt of weariness Hugh got to his feet and offered Adelaide his hand. He smiled at his mothers ring on her finger there.

"To the wolves?" He asked.

Adelaide smiled and squeezed his hand in acknowledgement as they headed out into the hall. The group met Perseus by the doors, and the man visibly flinched as Fausta came near. The tall woman smirked, then stared him down until he gave and averted his gaze. Triumphant, she leaned on Duncan's shoulder, one arm slung around his neck.

"Addy, is it necessary to have this crowd? This business is between us." Adelaide gave him a smile as she replied.

"I'm afraid so dear cousin. I feel they should accompany us." She lead them into the study, and once everyone had settled Perseus began to speak again.

"Addy, you've had the night to digest the information I've brought--though you should have returned to your own estate for the night. I do hope nothing inappropriate happened." He gave Hugh a warning look. "It would not do well to take advantage of an ill woman, Mr. Montgomery." Turning his attention to Adelaide once more. "Now, I've brought the paperwork. Where will you be staying? I've an appointment to speak with a seller about the house this afternoon." Adelaide stiffened slightly, but took a steadying breath. She gave Hugh a meaningful look, letting him know he could break the news. It would give him much satisfaction.
~

Fausta took a moment to follow the group in. She found Joseph again and gave the old man a fond smile.

"Sir Joseph," She said "I believe it our guest has asked to donate the things he left with you to the poor--how generous of him." The man grinned wickedly at her and nodded.

"Of course, Ma'am." He went off to do her bidding, and she returned, grinning widely. Fausta settled next to Duncan, who wrapped an arm around her waist. Percy had a visible look of shock and disgust before returning to his conversation. Fausta spoke quietly to her lover.

"<Feel free to maul him at any time.>" She saw Adelaide give Hugh the signal to speak and she sat back to enjoy the show.

Perseus once again filled Westwood's with the sort of energy that had Hugh's stomach curling, he stood like a guard protecting the worlds greatest treasure as he let Adelaide dictate how the morning's events would play. He was happy to follow the group into the study and took his place standing next to Adelaide again as she rested on a chair with high back. Perseus implied imprudent behavior between the two of them and once again Hugh found himself stuck between the truth and the perceptions of others. The muscle in jaw his ticked but he said nothing, it seemed the cousin was quite happy to move on with the events he had set in motion and asked where Adelaide would staying. Adelaide looked back over her shoulder at him then and he could see the implications of her gaze. He nodded curtly at her and turned to Perseus his smile cold.

"One moment please sir." Hugh said, more than happy to leave the plain, horrible man in limbo. He moved to the desk within the study and retrieved a folder of papers.

"What on earth-?" Perseus began but he was hushed by Duncan, his brothers grin filled with wicked glee. Hugh took his time arranging and thumbing over the papers and then took a seat across from Perseus, the desk between them. He picked up the first paper, looked over it and then placed it on the table and slid it towards the cousin. It pleased Hugh greatly to see the bead of sweat make its way from his forehead and down his nose to the bridge of his glasses. Perseus snatched up the paper and his brow furrowed as he read it over.

"This was sent off to the papers yesterday evening, set to be printed this afternoon and to be the talk of the town in the morn." Hugh said pleasantly.

"I was under the impression you nothing but a neighbour." Perseus put down the paper, a sneer on his face. "This is hardly a legitimate union, you spit on the sanctity of marriage sir, this can easily be redacted. Adelaide cease this nonsense, you clearly are beyond any measure of making choice."

"I'll ask you to refrain from speaking to my future wife in such a manor." Hugh snapped, the threat hidden in his words coming through clear in his tone. Behind him Fausta stood and folded her arms over her chest. The lump in Perseus's throat bobbed as he swallowed back the words he dearly wished to say. Hugh began to lay down a few older papers now, some articles' circled in ink. Thank the heavens for Aunt Lydia's hoarding tendencies when she stayed with them, the woman enjoyed reading about parties gone wrong and had a special fondness for the ones her nephews were involved in. "You will see that our courting has been documented at over three grand parties and many other smaller functions, this union is very much expected within the town, hardly as illegitimate as you claim."

"As I said, those ended most unfavorably for both Adelaide's image and for the business." Perseus was growing red and almost vibrating with anger as Hugh undermined and proved his every word wrong with a calm pleasant smile.

"Ah I thought you might bring that up." Hugh said happily. "I have here two end of year statements. One from when Adelaide's father was in sole control and the second with Adelaide's control. As you can see her profit margin is set to double by the end of next year. We have specific thanks to shoe's that she designed." There was a pause as Hugh looked through the rest of the stack of papers, he had snuck out of bed after Adelaide had fallen asleep in his arms and gathered all of these resources, knowing it would help defend Adelaide's freedom. "Ah yes here it is." He pulled out rough sketches and final schematics of the new shoe Adelaide had designed. Her signature was clear on each of the drawings. "Now if I may draw your attention back to the year end report you will find that a large amount of the profits are from this singular item in particular. Thus I must say your previous argument that the unfortunate incidents have effected the business is moot." Perseus was silent as the evidence was presented to him, his hands curling into fists. Hugh took his time, letting the man stew in his own emotions.

"This is not your business yet, without your marriage the Lovelocke wear still belongs to the family, as do the rest of her assets." Perseus growled.

"Well that is certainly a problem." Hugh agreed, "I must admit on this fact you are quite right." Hugh sighed dramatically as he whipped out the last set of papers, he turned then, looking at Adelaide and ignoring Perseus's throat clear of impatience. Hugh smiled at Adelaide, his stormy blue eyes alive with the glee of this battle of wits and planning. He reached over to grasp her hand and lifted it to press a kiss to her knuckles.

"That is hardly appropriate." Perseus muttered, venom in his words. Hugh ignored him and kept his gaze on Adelaide, his look shifted to something gentle, as he passed the stack of papers to her.

"In your lovely hands is the deed to the company, along with all the shares you own, the majority of course. With three signatures..." Hugh pointed out which papers needed her attention, "The company shall be in the ownership of Montgomery shipping." There was something earnest in his face then, his thumb brushing over the hands that held the papers, soothing and asking for trust.

~

Duncan watched the back and forth with a great deal of pride for his younger brother. He leaned in close to Fausta not willing to draw attention away from the exchange. "<He has outgrown the need for my help.>" The thought was bittersweet. He watched as Hugh passed papers to Adelaide then and took in a breath as Hugh's intentions were clear, his moves all clearly laid out now for Perseus to digest. The cousin looked outraged and jumped to his feet.

"You will not sign those papers Adelaide, I command it." The man shrieked, his voice octaves high from stress and anger. Duncan stood now, joining his fiancé as they stared down the cousin, daring him to try something.

Adelaide couldn't help but smile at the absolute satisfaction in her lover's tone as he dismembered her cousin's case brick by brick. Perseus was in quite a fit and he raised his voice at her in desperation. Hugh focused his eyes onto hers, asking for trust he had earned long ago. She took the pen from him, and before blotting ink to paper, she looked up through her lashes at Perseus. With a most demure smile, she spoke.

"That is hardly appropriate, dear cousin." She chided, parroting back his words. Perseus sat, staring daggers at her lividly. He gripped the arms of his chair with white knuckles, and the panick was written clearly across his face. "Besides, wouldn't a proper woman listen to her betrothed?" She said innocently as she began to sign. The man jumped up with a shout and nearly screamed at her.

"Adelaide don't you dare! I control you until you marry him! Stop this right now!" Adelaide didn't flinch as she continued her work, and Perseus was too much of a coward to step forward with Duncan and Fausta at his back. As she dotted the i on her last signature and handed the papers back to Hugh, she smiled again as she stood. Smoothing down her skirts, Adelaide looked the trembling man directly in the eyes.

"You don't scare me, Percy. This childish display you've set forth here doesn't even begin to compare with my softest night terrors." Perseus's mouth gaped open and closed like a dying fish. "Now, I believe you have vastly overstayed your welcome, sir. Joseph will show you out." At his name, teh butler opened the door with a look of smugness. Percy looked incredulously from one to the other, still trying to process the fact that his plan was crumbling around him. "Oh--and tell the main family not to expect an invitation to the wedding." Frozen in place, Perseus didn't move. An easy conquest had turned into a lost war. Adelaide rolled her eyes at the dramatic man before them and put her fingers to her lips. With a single sharp whistle, Tatiana and Oberon came bounding into the room. They sat before her at attention, ears up and eyes wide. Gesturing to the man, she commanded. "Herd! Get this man out of our sight." They leapt into action, circling him and biting at his heels.

The man yelped in pain and shock, beginning to move, finally. They hustled him right out the front door, and he leapt into his carriage and called for the driver to flee. Joseph fed them both a little slip of meat from the kitchens for a job well done. Adelaide sighed as soon as he had departed, turning and throwing herself into Hugh's arms with a delighted sound. "Oh, my Angel, you were brilliant!" She laughed as he swung her in a circle and kissed her deeply. Once he put her down, Adelaide called for Champaign to celebrate. "I know it's still early, but we must!" When the drinks were delivered, so was the envelope she'd prepared earlier that morning. With shining eyes, Adelaide handed it to Duncan. Hugh wrapped his arm around her waist and grinned like a madman.

"This is our wedding gift to you, my dearest friends. I am so thankful that we will all soon be family."
~

Fausta and Duncan watched the show gleefully, and laughed as the dogs forced the wretched man from the house for good. She almost wished he hadn't been such a coward--it would have been satisfying to inflict such pain on the man. Adelaide called for drinks and handed Duncan an envelope. Fausta smiled, curious. Looking at her lover, she asked

"<Do we open their gift and then announce? Or do we announce first, love?>"

He had done it.

Hugh let the notion that he had protected the woman he loved settle in him. In the time he had known her, Hugh had felt time and time again he had not been worthy of her love. All of his plights to protect and love her had been overturned but those around them. His heart bloomed in his chest as Adelaide threw her arms around him, the trust and love clear in how she touched and kissed him. Feeling the well of emotion within him Hugh dipped his head to kiss Adelaide, hoping the action might stifle the tightening of his throat. Adelaide called for champagne then and a house maid was more than eager to oblige. Knowing the quartet the maid brought a second bottle right away and began to pour four glasses.

~

As the maid handed out the glasses Duncan took the second glass meant for Fausta and downed the first flute in a single gulp. He coughed a little at the sharp bubbles and handed the glass back. If the maid thought his actions strange she did not show it and merely bowed her way out of the room. Duncan turned his attention then to Adelaide who handed him an envelope. With a brow quirked he set the glass down and fiddled with the fold of the parchment.

"<Let us open this first.>" Duncan decided, chuckling as he heard Hugh's whisper in Adelaide's ear.

"We really should hire an Italian tutor." His younger brother murmured into the shell of her ear, she giggled as she settled into his embrace. Duncan's thumb folded open the envelope then and he pulled out the paper. His eyes widened at the deed to Ivydown's, noting the new ownership, his head jerked up and he gaped at the couple. Fausta unwilling to be kept in the dark snatched the paper out of his hands. Her swear in Italian made Duncan give out a laugh.

"Are you certain?" Duncan asked, his voice grainy. At Adelaide's nod Duncan stood and marched over to the woman who had given them the perfect home to raise a family in. Duncan pried Adelaide out of Hugh's grasp despite his younger brothers protests and lifted the kind and loving woman into his arms. His hug was tight and the kiss he laid on her forehead was filled with all the adoration and love Duncan held within him. "Thank you." He whispered to her before setting her down.

Duncan backed away to let Fausta say her thank you's and when the two women were teary eyed at the kindness of the day Duncan knew the time was it.

"I perfect home to raise our child, don't you say Fausta?" Duncan asked casually. Hugh choked on his champagne then and after a small coughing fit he let out a strangled noise.

"Are you?-" His voice raspy, and perhaps not all from his choking.

Adelaide gasped as Duncan casually brought about the news. Feeling a little faint, she leaned into Hugh, who helped her sit onto the couch.

"Truly??" Fausta nodded eagerly and laughed as she embraced the dumbfounded Hugh. "This is amazing!! Oh, have you thought of names yet? Have you told your family?" Duncan laughed this time, at her newfound eagerness. "Oh! There's so much to do! We've got to make a nursery, and buy clothes and the doctor--" Hugh settled next to her, his face now split in a huge grin.
~

"We will be needing godparents too, you see." Fausta cut in before Adelaide could prattle on too long. Her eyes widened again, and Fausta laughed. "Would you do us this honor?" Hugh was actually speechless, and looked close to tears as he nodded emphatically. Adelaide let out a delighted shriek. Fausta looked at Duncan with a gleeful expression, and he squeezed her hand tightly.

The group spent the rest of the day planning for the future--how Fausta and Duncan would move estates, Addy and Hugh's trip to the apartment, preparations for the baby and still more wedding talk. Duncan even brought up the idea of a painting together once the babe was born. There seemed an endless list of things to do, but all four were eager to pursue it together.
~

Within the week, Adelaide and Hugh had traveled to London to look at the apartment. As they stepped out of the carriage and before the gate, Adelaide pulled her coat around herself more tightly. It was raining, of course, and they would soon be soaked. But Hugh stopped, looking at the building before them with a certain apprehension.

"Angel?" She called softly. He turned to look at her through the storm, and gave a shaky smile. "We don't have to go in if you aren't ready, you know." She reminded him. "We could go back to the Inn and relax instead. The apartment will still be here tomorrow--or a month from now even." Either way they would find reprieve from the storm.

The days came and went in a flurry of plans and joy, and now with the rain pouring down around them Hugh took in his first wary breath in days. Despite knowing it would be best to get out of the rain he found himself pausing at the old home he had not set eyes on in years. Memories of John and his mother swam in his mind much like the rain water swept past his feet down the cobblestone road. Adelaide's voice was a warm summer day in this cold, she offered him a choice and Hugh was grateful for it. He cleared his throat, steeling his resolve and gripped Adelaide's hand.

They were in the old apartment with a few steps and a quick turn of the key Duncan had given them. The house was dark, and cooler as no staff were there to work the fires or lamps. Duncan had not thought the expense was worth it, and had the house closed when he discovered he had not desire to stay. Hugh helped Adelaide with her damp coat and removed his own, he watched as Adelaide shivered and took his day jacket off to drape around her.

"I'll get a fire going." Hugh promised, despite not walking the halls for quite some time, Hugh knew the way to John's small study. The room housed a large ornate fireplace that had stone lions growling on either side of the openings. Adelaide waited patiently, drawing Hugh's coat around her. It was too dark to see, but minute later the room was bathed in soft orange glow. Hugh turned to take in the sight of the study, all of the furniture was covered in white sheets, and they stood like misshapen ghosts waiting to be uncovered. Hugh pulled off the sheet of the nearest object; revealing a tall chair with terribly orange cushions. The frame of the chair was carved into the shapes of elephant's, their trunks twining together. Hugh raised a brow at the chair and then looked at Adelaide apologetically.

"I forgot to mention, John had a rather... unique taste in furnishings." He chuckled and offered the seat to her as the room warmed from the fire. Taking a moment to pull away a few more sheets Hugh uncovered a matching chair and a green sofa that sported a number of gold dealings of the grapes and other fruits as accents. Next he found a rather hideous bar cart of brass, however the contents of the bar cart had Hugh pausing. He pulled out a bottle and the green liquid in it caught the light of the fire, sending its reflection dancing on the floor. Hugh looked over the label and snorted. "Absinthe... leave it to John to get the latest French inventions." Hugh passed the bottle to Adelaide before he regarded the bookcase. John had never been a big reader, and so his collection of books was rather small, he snorted seeing that a number of the books were rather erotic ones, not likely to have been found in most homes.

"John was certainly eclectic." Hugh said sighing and sinking into the green sofa. "It's strange to be here again." Outside Hugh heard the bell toll from one of the near by churches signaling the late morning hour. "Were it not for the covers and the darkness it almost feels as if he could walk in at any second. I do think he would have been proud of what Duncan and I have done. He loved to sail the most of all of us, perhaps he'll be watching as we send off the Tatiana and Oberon tomorrow." Hugh looked up at his future wife, happy to share his inner musings. "What do you think of all this?" He asked gesturing to their surroundings. The more Hugh took it in the more he remembered his brother was also a bit of a hoarder, it seemed they had a lot of work on their hands to make this into an acceptable London home.

~

Duncan lazed on a sofa, unwilling to think of the amount of work they had ahead of them. He was certainly excited about the new ownership of their own home but found the task ahead most daunting. All those rooms and walls to decorate. They certainly would need a fine master bedroom and would enjoy the gardens Adelaide had so keenly tended to. Their children would certainly want for naught. He wondered if Fausta would be up to the idea of a music room, a place where friend and family alike could try a number of instruments. Fausta breezed into the room interrupting his thoughts, Duncan lifted the arm he had draped over his eyes and peeked up at the woman he loved.

"Now I know we have plans to look over Ivydown's today and make lists... plans... all of that; but perhaps you might like to join me in sleeping the day away." Duncan tried, sighing when Fausta settled her hand on her hip and looked at him with a mix of love and exasperation. "Alright. Alright" Duncan groaned as he got to his feet and ran a hand through his hair. "We could venture to town and try cakes without Hugh and Adelaide, and then try them again when they return?" He tried one last time.

"<Come now Ducan, it is our future home.>" Fausta chided, looping her arm around his and leading him down and out of Westwood's. They chose to walk the path between the two manors enjoying the brisk weather. When they reached the front door, their cheeks were flushed, but both were quite awake and ready for the day. Charles greeted them with a warm smile and ushered them in from the cold.

"Can I offer you a warm drink before we begin?" He asked kindly.

Adelaide let Hugh lead the way. The air in which he carried himself here was quite different from the one he held at home. She could see the old tensions settle on his shoulder once more. As they walked to the study, she could almost feel the ghosts walking through his steps. Soon, he had started a fire and begun to uncover the room, each furnishing more garish than the last. Adelaide stifled a snort at the absolutely awful colors that clashed against the eye. Quite the cacophony. Hugh perused the room and spoke aloud while Adelaide warmed herself against the stagnant cold in the home. He asked his question and she raised her head with a small smile.

"I do think that we will be accompanied by John tomorrow, in spirit. Maybe he will bless your vessels with a safe a fruitful journey." Adelaide stood and came to him, and Hugh took her into his arms in a comfortable embrace. She peered up into his face and spoke softly. "I feel no need for another home, now that we have our own. But should you wish to keep this there are a few things I can think of." She broke away from him and went to the windows, throwing open the heavy curtains.

"We could make it into an office for you and Duncan, hire some people to watch over it while you're at home. Maybe a halfway house for unfortunates?" An idea occurred to her "Or...perhaps maybe, we could turn it into a home for women like me? Like your mother? To get away from those who would use us." She opened the second window's dressings, nervously awaiting his response.
~

Fausta and Duncan sat down to tea after drying off. Charles brought them an inventory of the house and a staff roster. He stayed by them to give clarification and answer questions. Luckily Adelaide had a fine taste in furnishings and art, so there was little to be replaced. Mostly just personal touches to add and some rooms to repaint. After a few hours, Duncan began to get restless. He mentioned a music room, and Charles smiled wistfully.

"Come with me." Curious, the couple followed as they were lead up the stairs and into a wing that was obviously unused. While clean, the drapery and accents were out of date, and no servants moved about. Fausta exchanged a look with her lover as they walked. Finally, the butler stopped before a door, and opened it with a flourish. Fausta gasped. Inside the room lay instruments of all kinds--some she couldn't even name. All covered in a thin layer of dust and softly illuminated by the light filtering through the sheer curtains. "The late Lady Lovelocke was greatly fond of music. The master closed off this room after she passed away. There are many pieces here that are exotic or archaic. She was quite the collector."

While Duncan bounded into the room like a child, Fausta focused on Charles. The glassy look in his eyes and the soft, bittersweet smile....Her eyes widened. He had been in love with her. No wonder he cared for Adelaide so. The child he never could have had with teh woman he wasn't allowed to love. Fausta smiled as she turned to watch her lover, folding her arms as she cradled the little secret inside her chest.

Hugh settled into Adelaide's embrace and breathed in her sweet summer scent, a stark contrast from the old and musty smells that came from the newly uncovered furniture. Adelaide came up with a number of idea's for the house and his heart have a soft thud at her last one. Adelaide stepped away from him, moving a curtain to the side and revealing the waterlogged London out its dusty window. He smiled warmly at the woman in front of him, she was so full of love, of course she would think of the perfect plan for this empty home.

"If I recall it does have a number of bedrooms, at least six. Certainly a few drawing rooms could be converted as well." Hugh tapped his chin as he thought. "You have two shops here yes? Certainly excellent places to offer job experience for those looking to make it on their own, with here as a safe space to reside." He went to her then, his thumbs brushing down her arms, he leaned down a bit and pressed a kiss to her forehead. "Its a perfect idea." He murmured. "How I deserved such a sweet and loving woman I will never know." He kissed her lips them, lingering there and enjoying the warmth she brought to him.

They spent a long while like that, holding one another. Eventually they decided to leave the house for the day, needing still to visit the Montgomery offices and the shops Adelaide's attire was sold. Together they made strategic business partners. When the day was done deals were made and papers signed, the thoughts of the closed home still close to their hearts. The inn they had chosen to stay at was near the docks and filled with sailors, they were loud and boisterous men, mainly crew for the two new vessels set to depart to the America's. They were cheerful and ready to begin their voyage. Hugh was bought a few drinks as thanks and he sat with Adelaide as they enjoyed a simple supper of stew at the bar. A man began to play the fiddle, it was a tune Hugh knew Adelaide enjoyed singing. He lifted a brow at her, a crooked smile in place.

~

Duncan took one look at the musical room and was in heaven. He missed his wife's realization and the glassy look of lost love from Charles. Instead his hands trailed over a dust covered fife, and flute, laid on a table near the window. unable to resist he picked up the carved instrument and cleaned it with his sleeve. He had seen a number of folks playing it in the bar but never had an opportunity to try it himself. The fife squeaked out a little noise and he laughed making a promise to himself to learn. He wanted to learn all the instruments in this place. The Lady Lovelocke had certainly amassed quite the collection. His spirit renewed he rushed towards his fiancé and gathered her up in his arms.

"We will create an orchestra my love! An entire band!" He hand found her stomach and he tickled her sides making her laugh. Charles chuckled as well and walked into the room searching for something. He found a covered instrument and moved the fabric away carefully, revealing a rather large harp.

"This was the Lady's favourite. She was quite the player." Charles said as Duncan and Fausta came up to look closer at the ornate instrument. Fuasta plucked one of the strings and the noise reverberated through the room, a low note. Duncan watched her smile and found all his restless anxiety and dislike for chore slip away. This was to be their home, someday Fausta would bring a little one up through these doors and they would take great pleasure in sharing the gift of music with them. His heart full Duncan didn't feel the small tear slip out of the corner of his eye.

Hugh was enthusiastic at her idea, and even offered a wonderful idea of his own. They embraced for a long while before gathering themselves to continue their long day. After a myriad of chores and planning, the couple ended up in a lively pub. The music began and Hugh gave her an encouraging look. Adelaide smiled, feeling filled with bright confidence at his trust in her. She stood, and was helped onto the stage. as the band picked up, she began to sing. The crowd hooted and hollered, clapping along and shouting encouragements. Feeling energized, Adelaide began to dance a little, blushing as cheers rose wildly. Locking eyes with Hugh through the masses, she blew him a kiss as the music paused a beat, before closing her eyes and singing with all her chest.

"What a woman!" Said a sailor near Hugh. Looking over, he grinned and raised his pint. "You best be sweeping her up, mate! Else half the bar will beat you to it." He laughed merrily.

When the song finished, the pub broke out into a roar of approval. Adelaide was helped down from the stage and drinks were sent to her table. Hugh swept her up into his arms, a giddy smile on his face. He kissed her then, fully in view of all others. There was a mixed reaction--cheers and groans of disappointment. After they finished dinner, the couple headed back to the Inn. Falling into bed beside him, Adelaide laughed. What a wonderful day. As she snuggled into his chest, her mind began to think about the next day.

"After we see off Oberon and Tatiana, we should go back to the apartment. We can make a list of damages that need repair and see what furniture is salvageable. Does that sound alright?"
~

Fausta saw how Duncan lit up like a star as he moved around the room, marveling at each new instrument. She smiled and laughed, and followed Charles as he moved. When he revealed the harp, she plucked a low note and felt it echo through her chest. Fausta looked over as her lover wiped something from his eye, and shook her head with a grin. Turning, she wrapped her arms around him and gave a kiss to his cheek.

"<Let us build a home worthy of this room, love.>" Duncan kissed her deeply in affirmation of her words, and they returned to the foyer to continue planning. The rest of the day was a blur of papers and inventory, but finally they flopped into the clean sheets of the master bedroom. As Duncan was peeling off his shoes, Fausta spoke. "Dearest Duncan," She crooned "I think we should be letting Charles go over to Westwoods. We can be taking Joseph here, yes?"

They were cozy and warm in their bed and Hugh would have it no other way. Hugh had immensely enjoyed the scene from downstairs, and there had been something very self satisfying in the way he had placed his claim on her in front of all of the men. The pride he felt in both her and what they had created left him with a lazy smile as his arm draped around her. Her hand rested on his bare chest, drawing lazy circles over the skin and hair there.

"Mm." Hugh made a noise of agreement to her idea and he snorted at the thought of the furniture. "Perhaps a theatre might take some of the more interesting pieces." He mused. They spoke softly to one another for quite some time before drifting off into dreams.

A single candle flame.
Two short cries of a child.
A gathering of three.
For it will not be long till all are whole.

The morning's chaos had Hugh and Adelaide forgetting any sort of dreams; instead they rushed getting dressed in some of their finest attire ready to stand as heads of the Montgomery Shipping line and smile proudly at the companies newest additions. Adelaide helped Hugh tuck away his cravat and swept away his hair so his top hat might sit nicely upon his brow. His eyes narrowed as he looked over the parchment holding his brief speech. They were due to the docks in a short while and Hugh took Adelaide's hand for support. He thought he might get used to the public speeches and acting like the owner of a rather successful company but occasionally his imposter syndrome proved powerful.

"Duncan was always much better at these things." Hugh murmured as they walked down the cobblestone streets the short length towards the two mighty ships. The sounds from the dock yard had wood creaking and men shouting, a familiar noise that brought about feelings of anticipation and adventure. Adelaide stayed next to him, pressed to his side offering all the comfort she could. As they reached the podium Hugh tucked Adelaide's arm into the crook of his arm and waited for the men to settle and turn their attention to him.

The speech was short and to the point, he thanked the men for their tireless work and wished them well on their journey. While it certainly was no war speech it seemed the sailors were eager to get moving again and thus no rousing eloquent speeches were necessary. There was some applause and a man dressed in a nice suit came forward and presented Hugh with a goblet filled with deep red wine. Hugh thanked the man and offered the goblet to Adelaide, she took it and Hugh gestured behind them to where both the ships floated.

"Would you do the honours love?" Hugh asked stepping aside, there were hoots and hollers from the men as they realized the woman with the voice of a siren was to christen their launch.

(ooc: So I learned that christening of boats as been happening since the ancient era, though the earliest they can find of breaking bottles on ships came about in the late 1800's. Mainly people just threw booze into the water or on the hull. Honestly I've learned so much from this book. Like matches were not a thing until the later 1800's as well, and absinthe was just invented at this time. Vignt un is the older black jack! It's preparing me for all sorts of trivia nights. XD )

"Of course!" Duncan agreed emphatically with Fausta out of habit before he caught himself. He narrowed his eyes at her and straightened once his shoes were off. He held them in his hand and tilted his head. There was something a little too sweet about her tone, he set his shoes down next to hers and crawled into bed with her. "Joseph's ability to make coffee perfectly and shoo away unwanted guests would certainly make our time here heavenly." He said nuzzling her neck and pressing kisses to her jaw.

As if sensing Duncan's curiosity building Fausta used her mouth and hands to drive any sort of logical thought from Duncan's mind, keeping them awake well into the night.

The following morning Duncan woke late and found Fausta out of bed, despite living in England with him for as long as she had it seemed Fausta was always up and ready before him. Groaning through a stretch Duncan let himself lay for a few moments wondering about what the day would bring them. There came a knock at the door and Charles walked in with a platter. Duncan smiled at the man sitting up and adjusting the sheets around himself.

"Good morning sir. I have here some mail and a coffee." Charles said his voice chipper.

"A man after my heart. Thank you Charles." Duncan accepted the small pile of mail and the drink. He looked over the envelopes and exclaimed out loudly. "They've arrived!" Unable to contain his excitement Duncan downed the coffee in two large gulps.

"Ah that's ho-" Charles began only to be cut off by Duncan's cry.

"Hot!"

"Yes sir." Charles agreed, his brow quirked as he watched Duncan struggle with a housecoat unwilling to put his letters down. "Shall I help-" He began before Duncan's excitement got in the way of proper sentences again.

"Fausta! Where is she?" Duncan asked finally with his robe on and a wonky knot off towards his right hip.

"In the brea-"

"Thank you!" Duncan shouted already out the door and heading towards the breakfast room, his prize held tightly in his hand. He rushed down the stairs and down a few halls until Duncan found the room he was looking for and burst into the room causing a maid to shriek and drop a plate full of fruits. There was a loud crash causing Fausta who was sitting at the head of the table to jump and look at him with wide eyes surprise. "Terribly sorry." Duncan said cheerfully to the maid who gaped at him, he would help he in just a moment he thought but for now he had to see Fausta. He rushed towards her and thrust out the letters making her blink up at him.

"Your families responses!" Duncan cried out. "To my inquiry of proposal!" She wasn't taking the letters fast enough so he placed them in her hand and went to drag a chair down so he could sit closer to her.

After a hectic morning, Adelaide was pressed close to Hugh's side at the head of the crowd. It was quite intimidating for her--being the center of so much attention. But, her lover handed her the goblet, and Adelaide gave a smile and stepped forward. Using all her strength, she thrust the liquid within the goblet as far as she could. It splashed against the hull of Oberon, and then she repeated the process with Tatiana. Cheers rose up and the crowd rushed forward to see the ships off. Adelaide found her way back to Hugh and wrapped her arm around his as they watched.

It took most of the morning to see the ships properly away. After, they would have a few hours to go through the house and gather things they wished to keep. Then there would be meetings with a salvager and a builder. After that, staff interviews. And in the evening, they would talk of strategies on how to get the word out about the home. They bustled in and decided to split up and search the rooms individually. Adelaide took to the bedrooms, and Hugh went towards the kitchens.

The first bedroom was full of more of John's queer furniture. After dusting everything off, Adelaide put aside the tarps to be donated, and began sifting through the fabrics. Unfortunately, John had an equally strange sense of fashion. Most of his clothes and linens would have to be donated for scrap. She emptied the drawers and closet, and was undressing the bed when she found a small journal wedged between the frame and the mattress. It was leather bound book, tied together with rough string. A capitol 'J' was embossed on the cover. Adelaide ran her gloved hands over it, feeling the dips and curves. With a small smile, she tucked the book into bodice to show Hugh later.

After Adelaide deemed the room complete, she moved to the next. Pulling off the first tarp, Adelaide coughed slightly as the dust clouded up around her. Once she recovered herself, she gasped.

"Hugh! Come quickly!" She called. A magnificent mahogany cradle sat before them, hand carved with apple and honeysuckle blooms. It was sturdy and well cared fore, still shined even after all the years of dormancy. Apple Blossoms and Honeysuckle... I prefer you over all, I give my devoted affections. How sweet. A mother's undying love.
~

Duncan thundered into the dining room, excitement pouring form every inch of him. Fausta jumped as the poor maid lost her platter in surprise, and her over excited child of a fiance shoved envelopes eagerly into her hands.

"Good morning to you, too." She snorted. Opening the first letter, Fausta found several sheets of paper inside. She smoothed down the page and began to read for him, in English. "It's from Paulo."

"My heart sings with happiness to know that you have finally found the courage to ask her. Fausta can be an intimidating woman, but you seem well suited for each other. I am thrilled to have you become a part of us, such a big brother I will be lucky to have. Save us two seats at the wedding. -Eternal love and happiness, Paulo" Gabriele and Maria sent a similar letter, written in hasty script and stained with blots from tears. Her father's letter was quite long, but she began to read nonetheless.

"Duncan, my boy! I cannot tell you how excited we are to have two new beautiful sons. Such strength and kindness--I knew you to be a Ricci man as soon as you came home. You'll have to polish up your sword skills for the wedding though! Should I defeat you, you will not be able to claim your bride. Take care of my daughter well. She is strong in many ways, but her heart is soft after all. She is cut deeply by grievances to those nearest to her, and her love for them can make her blind. Fausta will need you to help guide her on when not to fight. ANd should you bring children to this world--oh how magnificent they will be!--she will be unstoppable in her happiness and her rage. Together, you will light up all of England with your fire. Together, you must navigate all that comes with marriage. But I have trust in you, my son, that you will care for each other and grow. I knwo in my deepest heart that this union will be the happiest ever known. I gave you my blessing, and all that I can give." Several lines down there was a note in her mother's script. "P.S. We are packing now, prepare for our arrival in a month's time."

The second envelope was from Ezio, and said

Duncan is to read this himself.

Hugh was in the room over from Adelaide, it seemed John had used the space for even more storage and he was peering through a large dresser with many small drawers. With trepidation he slid open one of the top drawers and let out a small hum of pleasure at the cigar box that greeted him. Plucking it out of its resting place he opened the box and sniffed with appreciation at the tobacco. He jumped as Adelaide's voice rang out, summoning him. Slipping the box into his breast pocket Hugh stepped over a sheet but found his foot caught in the linen. With a small burst of air Hugh swung his arms wide and caught himself on a sofa before he tripped and fell to the group. Grunting with the effort to find steady ground Hugh took a moment before walking carefully over the rest of the mess towards his lover.

Peeking his head in the doorway Hugh noted where Adelaide's attention was pointed to and he moved to stand just behind her. The cradle, unlike the rest of the items around them was quite lovely. The carved wood varnish gleaming in the afternoon light. Gazing at Adelaide Hugh could not help the knot that slowly appeared in his throat. He found he did not have the words. With a gentle arm he circled her shoulders and drew her close, dropping a kiss to her shoulder as he embraced her from behind.

"It's lovely." He said after a long while, his eyes on the empty space where a babe should lay. "This should stay in the family." As they gazed over their discovery Hugh could not help but notice the thrum of the pendant that lay against his chest. His eyes closed and he pressed another kiss to the shell of Adelaide's ear. "I love you." He whispered, needing to share the words with her.

~

Duncan laughed at the letter from Rocco, expecting nothing less from the man. He would dust off his swords and spend long hours training for his victory. Fausta paused at the letter from Ezio and with a brow quirked handed him the letter. Duncan felt he knew the contents of the letter even before he slipped the seal off and unfurled the note. Ezio's script was filled with swoops and small punctures of the paper when he had stabbed it too harshly with the quill.

I will have your word Englishman, that my sister will want for naught in your home. If I hear of any tears from your actions I will not hesitate to finish you myself. I will sever your most prized limb between your legs if you do not fill her every waking moment with joy. It would bring me great pleasure to ensure you never lay another filthy finger on her, do not disappoint the Ricci family.

ps. congrats.

Sincerely, Ezio.

"Well that was lovely." Duncan laughed and folded the paper neatly putting it with the rest of the responses. "I think your brother is starting to like me." He folded his hands over his stomach and lounged back, happy with the results. His thoughts were busy for a moment before he remembered the question that had been in his mind the night before. "<Why are you hoping to switch the head butlers my love? I support you of course, I do find I am curious however. Both are quite accomplished and knowledgeable of the homes they run. What purpose does it serve to switch them?>" He asked switching to Italian, not wanting the servants to gossip.

Adelaide felt warmed by his embrace, and waited while Hugh drank in the cradle. He stated his intentions and then his love for her again, and she smiled. Adelaide squeezed his hands as they lay over her stomach, humming slightly. A lullaby her mother used to sing came to her mind, and Adelaide leaned back into her lover.

Sleep my child and peace attend thee,
All through the night
Guardian angels God will send thee,
All through the night
Soft the drowsy hours are creeping,
Hill and dale in slumber sleeping
I my loved ones' watch am keeping,
All through the night

She sang only the first verse, but it was as if the room filled with a happy warmth. She could swear anther voice hummed lowly along to her tune, and knew that his mother was watching. Perhaps she was giving them her blessing. I promise to make your son happy. Adelaide thought, almost prayed. Hugh had stiffened against her back, and she knew he was taken by great feeling. Adelaide turned in his arms and took his face in her hands.

"Forgive me, my love. I could not help myself. I wish I could give you a child for this beautiful thing..." She sighed "But Duncan and Fausta will care for it just as we would." She stood upon her toes and kissed his cheeks gently.

Fausta laughed as Duncan rejoiced over the letters. While he read Ezio's piece, she called a maid into the room and bid her to begin preparing their clothes for the day. Now that her family was to visit, they would have to accelerate both the house and wedding plans. The woman scurried away as her lover finished, and she rolled her eyes with an indignant snort. Duncan switched to her mother tongue, and Fausta's eyes lit up.

Reaching over, she took his hand in hers and spoke. "<Ah, darling... I don't want to separate Charles and Addy. You did not see the way he looked when he spoke of her mother..>" She sighed "<He was in love with the woman. That is why he dotes on Addy so. He wishes she could have been his. They depend on each other. You see?>" Duncan jumped up with a small shout, glee evident on his features at this new piece of gossip. She laughed as she took her tea to drink while he paced excitedly, like a dog.

"There is nothing to forgive." Hugh murmured, their lips breaths apart. "The child will have much love in its life. We will of course spoil him as it is our right." Hugh chuckled and drew Adelaide closer to him treasuring the moment. "We will take this home with us in the morrow, I look forward to presenting it to our family."

The couple spent a few more moments enjoying the others embrace, then spend a few hours more uncovering more of the strangeness John had held. They were not finished when they chose to leave, knowing the home would take a while more before it would be suited as a sanctuary. However the time had come to venture back to Westwoods and see their families. The following morning Hugh bundled up the cradle and strapped it to the back of the carriage before climbing in with Adelaide. The cool weather had them huddling under a blanket together and they stayed warm sharing small kisses and words on the ride home.

Over the following week changes were made in both estates, Hugh was sad to see Joseph go but found Charles was a most excellent head butler. The kindly man seemed most attentive to both their needs and Hugh found he felt most spoiled. They had not yet given the cradle to Fausta and Duncan as wedding planning seemed to overtake their every waking moment. Even now he pondered over fabric swatches wondering what colour would look best for his suit.

"Addy!" Hugh called out at his wits end, hoping she was within earshot. "I am not to be trusted to make this choice."

The settling into Ivydown's turned out to be quite easy, Duncan was grateful for the ease of transition as stress never seemed to suit him. He strolled on into what was quickly becoming his favourite room, the music room. Whistling a happy tune he wandered through the many instruments until his gaze settled on a mandolin. Interested he picked up the instrument and plucked out a little tune from the strings. With a wide grin he let himself walk out of the room while he played with his new toy.

As he passed servants in the halls he sang his greetings as he strummed away. Seeking out Fausta he found her in the study with her brow furrowed looking over papers.

"Ah my love." He crooned at her, standing in the doorway. "Heart of gold and a soul purer than the highest gods. Hair finer than all the silks and eyes that burn." He chuckled at the end of his song and strummed a few more notes as he came in to settle his rump on the desk and peer over the papers. "Ah seeking a venue for the wedding I see? Any winners?"

Adelaide came round the corner at Hugh's call, a maid behind her with tea. She laughed as Hugh threw his hands into the air, exasperated. Coming to his side, she bent slightly to examine the fabrics. With the quiet clinking of the tea service in the background, even the frazzled moment felt serene. Picking up a swatch of warm black, she held it to her lover's face.

"Warm tones suit you best, Hugh. But you needn't worry about these, you know?" She cocked her head and laugh again as he gave her a queer look. "You can wear your army dress, as Duncan is. That is traditional for a once enlisted man, is it not?" Hugh sighed and rolled his eyes, leaning against the desk and folding his arms.

"Can I not look different from my brother on the day we wed?" Adelaide hummed as she turned to give him a cup of tea. Sliding her hand down his lapel she murmured.

"I've yet to see you in dress, my angel. I'm sure you would look...delicious." She gave him a wink as he blushed deeply and spluttered on his tea, his eyes wide.

Duncan had taken to experimenting with a new instrument every day. He strolled into the study, plucking out a little tune on the Mandolin. Duncan sang to her sweetly. She laughed at his little ditty and looked up with a small smile. "Si, amore. But I am thinking of something more... local." She pushed the papers aside, Fausta pointed out into the gardens. "It will not be a big ceremony, so why not here?"

Duncan smiled happily. "Sounds amazing, my love!" He declared excitedly.

In the weeks after, the households were abuzz with preparations. So much so that the cradle was forgotten in the mess. The Ricci's arrived, and in typical fashion were a hurricane of happy chaos. Bria and Rocco took over much of the planning, taking nothing but perfection from the vendors. Soon the gardens at Ivydowns were bedecked with exquisite flower arrangements and a wedding arch fit for royalty.

Hugh and Duncan stood at the arch in their dress uniforms, a priest behind them. It was indeed a small wedding, just the Riccis, the staff of the households and Perseus Lovelocke, who came as the representative of the main family to verify the wedding. He was sitting in the back, looking extremely sour. Adelaide and Fausta were to walk each other down the isle, vows to be exchanged, and then the reception. Where Rocco would duel Duncan for his daughter's hand.

The wedding march began, and the small crowd snapped to attention. Tatiana and Oberon came down the isle first, one carrying flowers and shaking them out of a basket, the other carrying the rings secured to a collar. They took up positions on either side of the isle, and the brides began to make their way down. It was a warm day, for the beginning of winter, and soft flurries began to shower down. With their long veils and the sparkling flakes in the air, the women looked almost mythical.

Adelaide was quaking under her veil, holding onto Fausta's arm for dear life. Something that had seemed so out of reach was finally happening. She was getting married... The vows hadn't even started yet and already she was beginning to weep silently. Fausta squeezed her arm in comfort, a grin settling over her own features.
