Realistic or Modern The Bronze Locket

Earnest did not have time to process the words from Fausta, he was to duel her father? What on earth. He broke from his thoughts as Duncan joined them, an exuberant grin on his face, which faltered a little as Fausta held tightly onto Earnest. Earnest blinked in surprise as Fausta declared him as her partner for the evening. With wide eyes he looked towards Adelaide and the rest. Hope bloomed when Adelaide leaned closer to Hugh gesturing towards them, it was quickly snuffed with Hugh's grin and him turning his back on the three of them.

Duncan's eyes narrowed in understanding that his dearest was upset with him, unperturbed however and in far too good of a mood to be punished he let his smile move back into place.
"Well only naturally. Actually I was meaning to thank Earnest as well for being so dutiful to you need." Duncan said cheerily. "What a perfect way to thank him if we both escort him!" Duncan took Earnest's other free arm and looked across Earnest to Fausta. "Come now love, where shall we thank him first."
"I would something strong to drink." Earnest muttered.
"A wonderful idea!" Duncan declared, dragging Earnest and Fausta towards the Twisted Rose.

~

Hugh laughed as Earnest was stuck between the two stubborn fiery souls.
"I do believe Earnest will be needed a vacation after those two." Landon said, his eyes twinkling with mirth. Connor nodded his agreement and slapped a hand on Hugh's shoulder. Hugh grinned at the silent congratulations and patted his friends arm. "Will you two be watching the production as well?" He asked. Connor lifted one shoulder in a half shrug and Landon rolled his eyes.
"Of course! I haven't seen a good theatre show in many a year. Perhaps Aunt Lydia might lend us her less extravagant box."
"You could certainly inquire." Hugh agreed, he spotted Earnest being dragged into the pub and thought the idea of a drink seemed a good one. "Shall we follow and see what trouble awaits them?" He asked his companions.

They entered the pub after the first three, and found an adjoined table to sit at. Connor went to fetch drinks as they settled down. Adelaide gently removed her hat and gloves, glad to be a little cooler. Despite the warm atmosphere of the Twisted Rose, Adelaide couldn't help but feel uncomfortable in such a crowded place. It felt as though the very walls were watching here with piercing eyes, devouring her confidence with soft gossip.

Adelaide put her hands in her lap so the men could not see her knuckles go white as she gripped her skirts. Connor returned and she took a sip of her wine before speaking.

"I confess, I've only ever read Hamlet. Is it very much different on stage?" She inquired "My father used to say that plays were never really given justice until you've seen them." The men each began to contemplate her question as Fausta and her boys sat on the other end of the table. Ernest was, forcibly, put between the couple and looked exhausted. He took a mighty swig of his dark amber drink and muttered to himself. Duncan laughed and slapped him on the shoulder. Adelaide snet Ernest a sympathetic glance, even as the others burst into a fit of laughter of their own.
~

Duncan was keeping his cool expertly, and Fausta found that it ikred her to no end that he did so. After about a half hour of fuming silently with no reaction, Fausta gave up. She stood, excused herself from the table with a muttered excuse and swept from the pub. In the alley between the pub and the post office, Fausta slumped against the wall and sighed heavily.

What was she doing? Being so stubborn about this was stupid. Of course Duncan would have work he couldn't share with her. He was, after all, a businessman. He had to, in order to live. She had been so wrapped up in her own feelings and passions that she had forgotten a world apart from them existed. They could not spend every hour of every day immersed in each other. He had needs she could not fulfill on her own--friends, parties, bills. It was terribly selfish of her to be such a way at him for simply being. No relationship cold live off of petty jealousy and possessiveness alone.

Fausta felt supremely foolish--especially for dragging that sweet man Ernest through it with her. She sighed again in frustration and buried her face in her hands.

"Well the production is certainly quite interesting." Landon said in regards to Adelaide's question. "However, my favorite renditions have always been the ones put on by households rather than troupes, the music better at the theatre." He added in an after thought.
"I think you will really enjoy it." Hugh said, placing his hand over hers and squeezing. His eyes darted over to the three at the end of the table just as Fausta stood and excused herself. The group remained quiet until the door closed behind Fausta. Both Earnest and Hugh looked expectantly at Duncan as he took his time to take a long and deep sip.

"And?" Earnest said, impatient.

"How did it go?" Hugh asked immediately after. Duncan's face went blank for a moment, he leaned back in his chair and let the wide smile return.

"Everything is splendid gentleman. Now if I may, I do believe I need to grovel. Excuse me." Duncan stood and Landon barked with laughter. Hugh shook his head and at Adelaide's questioning look he cleared his throat. Deciding he would hate himself if he didn't at least say something to ease her he leaned down to whisper in her ear.

"Duncan has been planning a romantic gesture for Fausta and needed a morning set aside for implementation. He wants it to be kept a secret though." Hugh explained, feeling proud that he could honour his brothers privacy but still explain a bit to Adelaide. His eyes took her in and he noted the paleness of her skin. "Are you quite alright Adelaide? Are you feeling ill?" His hand automatically reached up to brush over her forehead, testing for a fever.

~

Duncan spotted a vase of flowers on the ledge of the bar and he grinned at the happy purple blooms that reminded him of her family. Whistling merrily he wandered over to the innocent flowers and plucked one out of the water and quickly rushed out the door before anyone could see him. He found Fausta in the alley between the buildings, her head in her hands. Pain moved through his heart and he supposed in his eagerness to plan his grand gesture he had neglected her. Seeing her so had him realizing he should have been more communicative with her. He wandered up to her and leaned next to her, their shoulders just barely brushing.

"I owe you an explanation." He began, letting the flower twist between his fingers. "And an apology." His head leaned back against the wall of the pub and he looked up at the cloudy day. He fought the urge to pull the ring out now and instead settled for the flower. "Forgive me for letting my desire to complete a task get in the way of us." He sheepishly offered her the flower then. "Perhaps I got over excited."

She nodded along with Landon's words. She was glad to see everyone else was looking forward to the show as much as herself. Adelaide smiled widely as she finally understood what all the fuss was about. No wonder Ernest had been so nervous all evening. Everyone at the table sat up at Hugh's question of her health, and Adelaide leaned away from his well meaning hand. With a small smile, she shook her head, bringing his hand back down with her own.

"I'm quite alright, Hugh, please. I'm simply not used to being somewhere so crowded is all." His worried look only worsened, and Adelaide rolled her eyes, scoffing softly. "Hugh, I promise. Please, let's not dampen the evening with this, alright?" She could tell he wasn't entirely convinced, but he settled down and took a sip of his drink. Adelaide decided to order a little bit of food before the show so they didn't drink on empty stomachs. The chips were warm and fresh, and made her feel a little more at ease. The men all chattered excitedly about the game and Duncan's gesture. Lovingly mocking him for having gone so soft after so long.

Though she was still uncomfortable, Adelaide did her best to put it out of her mind. She leaned her head on Hugh's shoulder, gently, gripping his bicep with her hands in excitement. The show would be starting soon enough.
~

Fausta started as Duncan's back hit the wall next to her. His sweet apology tumbled from his lips as he offered her the little bloom. Fausta couldn't help but smile softly, inwardly breathing herself further. Taking the flower, she gently wound it into his hair, her fingers tracing his jawline as she finished.

"No, amore. It is my fault." She sighed again, her dark eyes meeting his. "I am unused to us being apart for anything. In all my thoughts, I neglected to remember that you are not a part of me. You are yourself, yes? And sometimes...that will mean there are things you do...without me." She gave him an apologetic smile. "Amore, I overreacted. Forgive me?"

The chatter of the bar grew louder as more patrons from the charity event filed in, many pretty gowns and suits destined for the theatre made the Twisted Rose seem like an ornate painting. The door opened and three familiar feminine figures stepped in their fans waving as they chatted. Hugh recognized the women as the Whitehall sisters, Emily, Lillian and Alice, his brow furrowed at the memory of their rudeness during the first party he had thrown upon his arrival. The sisters caught sight of him and the rest of their party and with meaningful glances at one another moved towards the table. The men stood as the women approached and inclined their heads.

"M'lady." Landon said his eyes widening at the three of them, clearly taking in the gentle beauty the three sisters shared. Earnest inclined his head and Connor and Hugh both stiffly bowed in greeting.

"Mr. Montgomery. It seems you've collected quite the group." Alice smiled sweetly at him. "All these fine men indeed." Her eyes moved to linger over Adelaide then and her smile turned into more of a sneer. "And a stray I see."

"Miss. Whitehall, these men served with myself and my brother during the war." He took turns introducing them all and each man bowed once again. Alice in turn introduced her sisters and before Hugh could say his farewells Landon offered for the women to join them. He missed the warning look from Earnest and the rest and focused his full attention on Lillian.

"And will you all be at the production this evening? Hamlet is sure to be quite the spectacle." He queried, and then lifted his hand calling for a server to bring the women something to drink.

"Oh of course! We wouldn't miss it." Lillian said. "Will you all be attending as well?"

"Yes! My man here won the box seat for himself and Miss. Lovelocke, but the rest of us shall be in our own box. Perhaps we might see one another there." Landon said hopefully.

"You won?" Emily asked Hugh, the glint in her eye almost as green as her envy. Hugh only nodded and sat up straighter, he found himself wishing to excuse himself and Adelaide. While Landon may be blind to the women's scorn Hugh could feel it coming off of them in droves. He looked to Adelaide hoping to find comfort and peace on her face.

~

Duncan felt the tingles of warmth as Fausta played with his hair, weaving the flower there. He would wear it with pride, the thoughts of others be damned, nothing would get in the way of how he felt for the woman before him. They were like complementary elements, his breeze to fan the power of her flames. Her words were soft, but it was clear that she had done a great deal of thinking in the time he had been without her. Unable to resist he reached his arms out to hold the small of her waist and draw her into him. She stood between his legs and they stood at equal heights gazing into one another's eyes.

"It felt so wrong to not have you by my side this day. I do not think I could be apart from you for more than a few hours." He leaned in his forehead touching hers. "There is nothing to forgive, if anything your reaction today has certainly made me feel most desired." He chuckled, loving that she longed for him as much as he. His hands moved up from her waist then to cup on either side of her face. "<Amore, perhaps we should steal away. I could do without seeing a play, all I want to see is you.>" He whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

Adelaide felt almost faint when the Whitehall sisters joined their table. The sharp words and barbed glances they shot towards her made her feel tired and shameful. Reflexively, she reached up and rubbed the choker, the bronze locket tinkling softly. Clenching her other hand and doing her best to sit up and appear normal, she smiled at Hugh as she caught his fervent glace. Adelaide's own eyes were full of that familiar pain they both knew so well.

"You all look lovely this evening." Adelaide said, her voice somewhat smaller than usual. Emily took notice of this and her smile just briefly held venom. It returned to sweet, however as she responded.

"Why thank you, Miss. Lovelocke. You look fine yourself." She giggled "Though it's a good thing you covered that up." Many people had seen Adelaide's scar at the first ball, and rumors had abounded with help from Edward. Adelaide flushed scarlet and averted her gaze, gripping her neck. Alice chimed in from Ernest's shoulder.

"You do look a bit pale, Miss Lovelocke. Is your estate not big enough for you to take in the sun? I thought it was, even though you don't get out much." Her red stained lips curled upwards in a satisfied grin. Lilian spoke next, one hand casually on poor Landon's.

"You musn't be so hard on her, sisters. Haven't you heard? She's moved in to the hospital in the next town over for her...health." The other two gave overly dramatic gasps and hollow apologies. Adelaide dug her nails further into her palm to stop the tears she felt burning behind her eyes.

"S-stop. Please." She said, a barely audible whisper. The Whitehalls had never forgiven her father for opening his store first, their competing line had not done well in the wake of it. And the sisters seemed determined to humiliate her in hopes of Hugh leaving her alone. Lilith looked over to Landon with shining eyes, her next words sliping from her lips in a honeyed tone.

"Oh, let's not talk about such things. You fine gentlemen should keep your distance, you know. I wouldn't want anyone thinking badly of you because of the company you keep."
~

Fausta grinned at Duncan's confession, and took his hands in hers. "<That sounds lovely, dearest Duncan. Take me away so we can be alone together.>" All giggles and light spirits, they rushed back to his carriage. Once the door swung closed, Fausta sat herself across his lap, winding her arms around his neck in the cramped space. Back in his arms once more, it didn't matter at all. It was like they were somewhere else entirely. Fausta closed her eyes and leaned closer, kissing his ear and working her way up his jawline with fevered kisses.

"<God, I missed you.>" She whispered, her tone rapsey with love and desire. Finally, their lips met and Fausta sighed into the kiss. Whatever happened, his kiss always seemed to put everything right again.

As the women spoke, taking their turns to strip Adelaide with their words the men at the table grew quiet and most still. Even Landon's silly smile had slipped to a displeased frown. Earnest's eyes narrowed as he looked sidelong to glance at Adelaide and Hugh. She seemed to be shrinking with every word and Hugh's pupils had dilated, Earnest could all but hear the ringing in his ears. Connor was the first to move, straightening to his full seated height and folding his wide arms over the expanse of his chest. There was a vein twitching in the arm and he looked most displeased as the women twittered on.

"In fact if you would prefer, I would be most glad to take Miss. Lovelockes place in the box this eve." Alice said, her fan out and waving alluringly in front of her face. "She is looking rather pale."

"Perhaps you've tired yourself out for the day. What with your weak constitution dear, I find I am not surprised." Emily quipped failing to notice as Hugh's neck and ears flushed red. His hand's curled into fists under the table, and his knee began to shake with the energy it took to restrain himself in front of the town.

"Edward was always saying how you needed-" Lillian cut off her words suddenly letting out a high pitched wail as had Landon lifted his half full tankard and with purposeful motion had upturned its contents over her head, cutting off her venomous words.

"How dare-" Emily began as Connor chose to mimic his friends actions and spilled his own drink down her front, adding her screams to the mix.

Alice regarded Earnest as he flashed her a smile, her bottom lip trembled and a low whimper left her as Earnest turned his own ale and deposited the contents upon her hair and dress as well. The sisters, crying and screaming had drawn the attention of the bar. Onlookers gazed as all three women jumped up from the table, gathered their skirts and rushed out the door, hurling insults and pleas at the table holding Adelaide. The door of the Twisted Rose snapped shut and the screams grew fainter, silence filled the bar as all everyone took in the scene. Hugh, feeling rather left out of the fun his friends had just partaken in, rose to his feet, and felt the pressure of over three dozen eyes.

"Let me get one thing straight." He began, his voice powerful and low. He did not shout, and if it were possible the bar grew even more silent to hear his words. "Should anyone speak poorly of Miss. Lovelocke or her family you will rue the day. I will not allow your false perceptions and harsh words to harm her any longer. The information you have been fed by Redstone is filled with falsifications and do not paint the picture accurately." As Hugh spoke his friends joined him in standing. Connor moved to stand behind Adelaide, his hand rested gently on her shoulder. He gave her a friendly squeeze but looked to the rest of the patrons like a dragon guarding his stolen princess. Earnest and Landon took up positions on either side of her as Hugh stepped in front of the table to get a closer look at the people who had made Adelaide's life full of hardship.

"Miss. Lovelocke has displayed a great show of bravery and grace walking into the lions den you have created, and I will ensure she never has to face any of you alone ever again." He looked down at his hands and picked at a piece of dirt that had gotten under his nail, in an after thought he added, "I would be most happy to send my Aunt over to any household that might need a reminder of proper etiquette." The threat of Aunt Lydia had the patrons in the town shrinking away, they knew certainly the four men surrounding were quite fearsome, but nothing compared to the wrath of Mrs. Montgomery.

At the end of Hugh's statement, the man behind the bar stepped out and carried a bottle of whiskey with him. Hugh accepted the offering and regarded the patrons one last time, deciding to add a little sugar to the mix he lifted his finger and made a circle motion, gesturing to the crowd. "A round for the pub, put it on my tab." Hugh lifted his bottle and accepted the round of cheers and applause before taking a swig. Realizing he had not looked to his love for a long while Hugh turned and offered the bottle to her. "I do believe we will have a most splendid night at the production." He said to her, his smile warm. He regarded his friends still surrounding Adelaide and thanked them with a small nod.

~

The carriage rumbled as it passed over gravel and dirt roads, taking them back home. Within the walls of the carriage Duncan took his time worshiping the woman who had captured his heart so. She was alive in his arms, full of soul and spark. He was careful to ensure the little wrapping of his testament and devotion to her was hidden away. He had placed the letters on a ship leaving the following morning and he hoped within the next two weeks he would receive letters in return. He knew it was rather traditional of him to ask for her families permission and for letters to her, however as much as an independent woman Fausta was, it was clear family still remained very dear to her.

When they returned to Westwood, they found it empty, most of the staff having taken the night off to visit town and the charity event as well. They laughed as they decided to throw caution to the wind and head for the library rather than the privacy of their own room. The dogs greeted them there, laying by the coals of a dying fire left to keep them cozy. Duncan patted the dark fur of Oberon and took a moment to lay his attentions on Tatiana as well. Fausta added a few logs to the fire and feeling inspired, Duncan left the dogs to push a lush couch closer to the renewed flames. He found the old copy of the play to be put on that eve and flipped to a page he knew his mother had marked with a dry flower.

Sitting on the sofa and pulling Fausta into his arms, he held the book out for the both of them to see, and recited. His voice was deep and purposeful as the bard helped to relay the words he felt most poetically.
"Doubt thou the stars are fire;
Doubt that the sun doth move;
Doubt truth to be a liar;
But never doubt I love. "

Adelaide was reeling from the succession of events. She had almost no time to recover herself from the Whitehall's barbs to Hugh's declaration of war to the pub. She found herself shaking quite violently--her emotions having reached a fever pitch within her. But as everything settled, Adelaide managed to take a few deep breaths and offer a sweet, if shakey, smile to her friends. They were her friends now, that much was clear. After such a display of love she could not say that they were anything else. Adelaide placed the bottle of whiskey on the table after pouring each a shot. The familiar motion gave her time to collect herself properly.

"I cannot thank you each enough for your kindness." She said softly. "I...I honestly don't know how I can repay you." They all immediately waived off the sentiment. "No!" She insisted, taking Hugh's arm. "Please, I feel I must. No one has ever done something like that for me, aside from Hugh and Fausta. And something so grand, too... I'm just so touched. Thank you." She gave them all a bright smile, hoping her sincerity got through. They spent another half hour in the Twisted Rose before moving to go to the theatre. They said brief farewells as they parted to find their boxes.

Once they had gotten to their box, Hugh sat Adelaide down and focused on her. It was clear that he was still very anxious by how he gripped her hands tightly. Adelaide gave a small laugh and squeezed his hands gently. "Please, I'm alright, Hugh. Or rather, I will be soon." She leaned forward and gave him a chaste kiss on the lips, breaking apart with a quiet sigh. "Thank you for standing up for me so gallantly, Angel. It was a magnificent display of bravery." Hugh laughed this time, rolling his eyes as he released her and sat back in his seat.

"Not really." He replied sheepishly. Adelaide shook her head and snorted.

"Only you would say that wasn't so, my angel." She said "How many times has that made of you coming to my rescue? It requires bravery each time you do, you know." Hugh gave her a fond smile and leaned over to press a kiss to her hairline. "And just when I thought you couldn't possibly look any more handsome tonight, you prove me wrong." Adelaide teased, poking his chest with her fan. Hugh's ears flushed pink and she giggled at the sight. Still so bashful, even after all this time. It was quite endearing.
~

Fausta and Duncan set to work making the library cozy, and he pulled her up onto his lap. Fausta laughed, delighted, and snuggled in closer as he read her a love poem. Duncan's voice was thick with emotion, and as she watched his features flicker in the firelight, Fausta found herself more enchanted than ever. Duncan picked a second verse to read, and Fausta peppered sweet kisses along his cheek and neck as she listened. How deeply she was devoted to the wild, gentle, beautiful man before her.

With such a mood set on such a perfect night, Fausta found that she couldn't hold back any longer. As he thumbed through the pages again, she slipped the package from her pocket. With a gentle rustling that caught his attention, Fausta smiled widely and produced the ring, the gold glowing in the light of the fire. IN a barely audible whisper Fausta said

"<Dearest Duncan, would you be my heart forever? Marry me, please. So we can be one.>"

The theatre bustling and chatter came to a dull noise as the stagehand began to light the candles along the edge of the stage signaling that the show was soon to begin. The box Hugh had won was focused on center stage and made private with walls and curtains. The two seats that they occupied were a plush purple, with gold detailing, they sat close to one another, their hands intertwined as the final candle was lit. Hugh leaned towards Adelaide and his breath whispered across the surface of her ear.

"I hope this is everything and more. You deserve all the good life has to offer." Hugh settled back in his own chair, his cheeks a little flushed as the sentiment seemed to come out of nowhere. He thought about pulling out the ring and just asking then and there, but it still didn't feel quite right. He did not want to take away from Adelaide's first time and distract her away from the activity that seemed to interest her so. The curtain raised and the two leaned back to enjoy the show.

~

Duncan's breath caught as the ring glinted in the firelight. Her words were perfect, and she was more than he could ever want. How perfect that she would be the one to ask him and not the other way. It was exactly what he loved about the strong, courageous woman before him. His hands came up, brushing against the skin of her forearm as he looked away from the small metal band and looked into her deep soulful eyes. His grin bloomed like the spring, and her took the ring from her fingers to look over her choice.

"This is beautiful." He murmured, unable to help himself he kissed her, a soft gentle kiss. "<I would be honoured.>" He let her place the ring on his finger and they both looked at it for a moment before Duncan shifted a little and reached into his own breast pocket, pulling out the ring he had found for her. It was a black metal, which had been painstakingly woven into intertwining cords, the ropes of the band held a small stone, a smoky quartz. "<I was away all this morning looking for this, and sending your family letters, asking for permission. I was hoping to read them to you the night I asked.>" He explained. Sitting up and sliding off the sofa to kneel in front of her Duncan offered her the ring.

"<Of all the journeys and the paths life would take us on, I know I want to experience them all with you. Be my wife?>" He asked, knowing the question was a bit redundant but he wanted to ask all the same.

Adelaide never let go of Hugh's hand during the performance. She was an animated watcher, gasping and crying and roiling with all the emotions of the characters onstage. The play was masterful, she felt just as she had when she was immersed into the pages of it. During the intermission, Hugh had taken her into his lap. Adelaide was flushed bright red, but allowed him to have his fun fawning over her because of the privacy the box allowed. For the duration, they held onto each other and spoke softly of the production so far--though Adelaide did most of the talking.

The play resumed and she was capitaved again, until late into the evening when it finished to a standing ovation from the audience. It took another hour to find Hugh's friends, and to be informed that Duncan and Fausta had not shown up for the play. The group exchanged laughter at the discovery, all happier now that the couple had made up again. They all squeezed into the carriage and talked about the play and the tourney, everyone seeming to be pleasantly tired. The kind that comes after a happy and eventful day of events. After returning to Westwoods, the group dispersed to their respective rooms.

Adelaide collapsed into the chair before her vanity with a long sigh. She shrugged off her shawl and took off her hat, gloves and choker. Taking down her hair, she ran her fingers through it to relieve the pressure from her scalp. She turned to look over her shoulder and gave Hugh a brilliant smile.

"Did you have a good day, angel?"
~

Fausta's breath caught in her throat as Duncan confessed his day's events. He knelt before her and presented a ring of his own--a beautiful black ring that shone like magic in the firelight. He whispered the question himself, the words falling like a prayer from his lips. The joyus, serine look upon his face overwhelmed her--to know that his heart was so full of peace at the moment hers was full of energy.

Fausta joined him on the floor, the couple kneeling chest to chest in the darkened room. She held out her hand for him, tears beginning to dribble form the corners of her eyes.

"Yes," She said, a smile splitting her face in two. "Oh, yes! Dearest Duncan, I would love to become your wife!" He slipped the ring onto her finger and the moment the cool metal touched her skin, she let out a shriek of joy and tackled him onto the rug. They erupted into laughter and tears of joy, holding each other tightly. Fausta peppered his face with kisses, muttering over and over, "<I love you, I love you, oh how I love you!>"

Adelaide had been so full of life and joy through the performance and all the way home. Hugh had a blooming sensation in his chest at the pride that he had been able to do that for her. With each passing day spent free with Adelaide it was like he was shedding the cocoon of his fathers history and the blood the linked them. He felt lighter, and with how easily the group had been together Hugh realized how at peace he felt. While the group had been enjoying the production Hugh had received a letter from his contact in London. He had taken a look over the copies of LoveLocke Ladies Wear and his notes had confirmed Hugh's suspicions that Adelaide was a most cunning business woman. The profits had more than doubled with new styles and now with the addition of fine Italian fabrics, imported by Montgomery Shipping Adelaide's margins had her sitting at a tidy nest egg. Hugh was certain that the rise in funds had been a large part of the reason Adelaide's cousin was set to visit. Adelaide's question drew him out of his thought and he set the papers aside on the night stand and laced his hands over his stomach. He reclined against the pillows of the bed and beamed at her.

"I most certainly did. I would ask you, but your smile has been a constant this eve." He chuckled happily. Deciding to get up and go over to her, Hugh helped remove the rest of the pins that had held her hair in place. His fingers found the pressure points on her scalp and gently massaged away the tension. "I would like to take you to many more plays and events if I get to see that smile." He leaned down to press a kiss along her shoulder and moved up towards the scars that lined her neck. He kissed there too, before placing one last kiss behind the shell of her ear. With gentle hands he began to unlace the corset that held together the ruby red gown she had worn.

"You took my breath away today." He told her, pulling at the last of the string. "Every piece of clothing you have was built to make my mouth water." He caught her gaze in the mirror and gave her a devilish smile.

~

She slid to the floor in front of him, pressing her self to him, the emotion and power that he felt from Fausta had Duncan's heart beating faster. He found the excitement at the idea of professing their love in front of friends and family one of the most exciting adventures proposed to him. Her tears slid down her cheeks and before he could catch them she propelled them both backwards with the force of her embrace. Landing with a soft thud against the fur carpet before the fire they laughed and she rained kisses over him, her love a repeated mantra as emotions flowed freely between them.

Duncan found his own eyes were watering as they both promised one another in the firelight to never let go. With an arm he circled her waist and flipped them over in a quick motion, hovering over her he looked down as her hair fanned out around her. Her lips a deep red from their fevered kisses. Her eyes shone bright, and Duncan's throat grew tighter as he looked over the woman that had promised to spend forever with him.

"I love you." His voice thick and raspy as he repeated her mantra back to her. "God, I love you." Unable to help himself Duncan got to his feet and swept Fausta up in his arms. He thought of carrying her nicely, but in the moment he also felt like a conqueror who had discovered the worlds finest riches, and so he hoisted her over his shoulder and patted her rear fondly at her noise of surprise. With a laugh he began the trek up the stairs and to their shared room.

Adelaide's smile only grew as Hugh spoke of her enjoyment of the evening and how it added to his own. She hummed in delight when he gentle began to help her with the undoing of her outfit, though she shivered as his lips danced across her skin. The corset came undone and Adelaide met Hugh's eyes in the mirror. at the intense and hungry gaze she blushed as red as her gown. Gently pushing her chair aside, she stood and pressed herself to his chest as the dress fell down around her shoulders.

"Forgive me, angel," Adelaide said softly, looking into his eyes "I didn't mean to tease you so...should I make it up to you now?" Her fingers undid his cravat in a fluid motion, and she wrapped her hands around his neck as she drew him in for a deep kiss. Adelaide poured herself into the action, letting all her feelings for the man before her overflow into him. Hugh's hands gripped either side of her waist, the soft fabric crumpling in his hands and pulling the garment down further. Hugh released a low growl and held her more closely to him, their bodies pressed together creating a searing heat. Adelaide pulled away for a moment to catch her breath.

Hugh moved them toward the bed and together they fell into the sheets, consuming each other again. "Oh, Hugh.."
~

Fausta howled with laughter as Duncan threw her over his shoulder like a prize and carried her up to their room. Once he'd kicked the door shut behind them and thrown her onto the bed, Fausta extended her arms to him.

"I can't wait to do this for the rest of our lives." She murmured as he came to her. The met in a fever of passion and laughter, both still half in disbelief. Fausta held onto him like he was the last person on earth. Like it was the first time she had felt another's skin. She kissed him fiercely, as if laying claim to Duncan in victory. He was finally hers, forever.

The morning brought a level of sadness to their three guests, they had extended their stay to spend more time with their charges, but after breakfast the war comrades were set to return home. Breakfast was served in the dining hall with a large assortment of goodies as a farewell from the staff of the house. Everyone was seated and looking well rested, save for Duncan and Fausta who had yet to join them. Hugh looked fondly at his friends and raised his cup of tea.

"We shall certainly miss you all. We hope that you might make this a yearly trip, I don't want to go long without seeing you all." Hugh clinked the china with Connors and the giant beast of a man grinned at him. "May your journey home be uneventful." Hugh finished. Adelaide was at his side and she also lifted her glass, thanking the guests for everything. Her neck was bare again and the group regarded her warmly.

"Perhaps next time you will join us on our hunt." Landon said, returning to his healthy helping of meat on his plate.

"Ah he just wanted to save himself the embarrassment" Earnest said playful at Hugh making him laugh.

"Next year certainly-" Hugh was abruptly cut off as Duncan and Fausta entered the room.

~

"A most excellent morning it is friends." Duncan said jovially. He was on top of the world this morning. He lifted Fausta's hand her ring catching the glint of the morning sun and kissed it. Earnest let out a sound of surprise as he caught sight of the ring and he jumped to his feet pointing at the two of them.

"Did you-? Did she-?" He stammered. "I thought-"

"What is happening?" Hugh asked, also standing, he took in the happy sight of his brother and quirked a brow. "Moving your plans ahead then brother?" He asked making Duncan let out a bark of laughter.

Adelaide laughed delightedly at the announcement, standing to embrace the couple. Fausta hugged her tightly, vibrating with excitement. Duncan picked her up and swung her around, laughing himself. After being deposited onto the ground once more, she took her seat again. The couple followed suit and Adelaide smiled.

"I'm so happy for you!" She exclaimed. "Do you have a date for the wedding? I helped plan Lionel and Elizabeth's, you know. I like to think it was quite the success." Adelaide remembered the affair fondly as she took another sip of her tea. "I know there are several traditions we'll need to include, of course. The groomsmen's sword fight, the mamushka dance at the reception... goodness, there's so much to do!" The men at the table all looked baffled at the suggestions, though Adelaide turned her head and saw Hugh looking at her strangely.

"What is it, Angel?" She asked "Do I have something on my face?" Adelaide quickly took up her napkin and dabbed at her mouth, embarrassed.
~

Fausta laughed as poor sweet Ernest jumped up like he'd been bitten by a snake. Addy came to embrace them both and she was just as delighted as they. The woman always could live so vibrantly through the emotions of others. Soon, however, she would have this joy as her own. Fausta caught Hugh's eye and gave him an encouraging grin as Duncan swung Adelaide around like a doll. They all sat and Adelaide began to speak of the wedding. Once she'd paused, Fausta leaned over towards the guests and said.

"Si, Ernest! We both proposed last night, yes? Though I did ask first." She said with an air of smugness, earning a rough laugh from her lover. "I know we had been putting you in the middle! I apologize, it could not have been easy."

He could not help but marvel at how much Adelaide came to life with the exiting news of Duncan and Fausta. She caught Hugh staring as he wondered how she would handle the planning of her own wedding. Hugh chuckled as she worried over an invisible crumb, and focused his attention on the rest of the group around him, his mind busy with ideas and notions on how to make everything perfect for Adelaide. They sat and talked a long while, Fausta regaling them over the nights previous romance and the two women planning what was looking to be a most lavish event.

Later the two couples stood in stone path that led to Westwoods and waved farewell to the three friends that had promised to return for the wedding and for a yearly hunt. Aunt Lydia also left the same day, she had kept mostly to herself after the incident involving Redwood and Green and wished the newly betrothed couple well before sliding into her carriage and ordering the driver off. It felt all so quiet, what a few hours before had been a busy and happy house seemed to have lost a bit of its life.

The week that followed had Adelaide ordering new furniture and decor for Westwood's with the arrival of the items set for the end of the month. Despite her focus on the house it seemed the wedding was at the forefront of everyone's mind. Adelaide and Fausta had curated a rather large binding, full of clippings from the paper and neatly penned notes. Adelaide had also found some of the planning materials from Lionel and Elizabeth's wedding.

Hugh and Duncan certainly enjoyed the planning and took part wholeheartedly, but some of their time had also been dedicated to Montgomery shipping. What with the integration of the Ricci family there were a number of important papers to be signed, as well a couple requests had come for the two heads to send off the newest members of their fleet; two massive galleons which Hugh hoped to surprise Adelaide with as he had named them Tatiana and Oberon. They were set to sail in a month and Hugh hoped Adelaide would appreciate a trip up to town for a few days. With the invitation from the company in his hand Hugh found Adelaide in her own office. She was perched on her chair, the perfect image of education and beauty as she peered over some papers. Hugh knocked gently on the oak door and when she lifted her head he smiled in greeting.

"Afternoon dearest." He said stepping up to the opposite side of her desk, he placed both his hands on the surface and used them as supports as he leaned over to kiss her gently. "I've brought you something." Hugh offered her the invitation and smiled as she read over the names of the ships done in elegant calligraphy. "I thought perhaps next month we might take a trip to town for a few days. Have you any interest in joining me?"

~

Duncan and Fausta had spent most of the day in the stables. During the week they had been given the news that Hugh's prized stallion, Hellfire seemed well on the way to be a father. Aphrodite, or Love as the staff and family called her was round, her grey speckles stretching over her taught belly.

"Seems like it'll be any day now." A stable hand had said as he hauled in another bunching of hay. They were preparing to keep her in a pen for a few days to keep an eye on her, birthing mares was always an ordeal and it seemed safest to keep the mother under watchful eyes.

"What an absolutely perfect mother you'll be." Duncan crooned as he took a bristle brush and swept away the dust from Love's coat. The horse snorted, almost as if in agreement making Fausta laugh as she offered the horse another carrot. Duncan refused to let himself hesitate and he looked over to his future wife and lifted a brow. "I think you would be a perfect mother as well, should that be a path you wish to follow?" He wondered. There was a part of him that loved the idea of filling a home with their children. They would teach them to hunt, sword fight and trounce their grandfather. There seemed to be no end to the adventures he wished to share with Fausta, and with the confirmation of a wedding Duncan found he could not stop himself from dreaming of what joys the future brought them.

Outside, Duncan caught the distinct sounds of carriage wheels against gravel along with a should of greeting from Joseph.

Adelaide smiled brightly at the names for Hugh's newest vessels. How wonderfully sweet of him! Hugh mentioned a trip and Adelaide stood, giving him a tight hug and laughing lightly.

"Oh, that sounds perfect, Angel! A trip would be marvelous." Before she could say much else, Adelaide heard Joseph announce the arrival of her cousin, Perseus. Muffling a small scream, Adelaide quickly extracted herself from Hugh's arms, and rushed to tie up her throat in a choker. "My love, please, he mustn't know I'm living here." She begged, taking his hand in both of hers. "He's terribly shrewd, and should he think anything improper--" Before she could finish, the door began to open and she released him, moving to stand at a proper distance and averting her eyes from him.

Perseus strode into the room, a thin, gangly man who was al limbs. He was dressed in the lates London fashion; a smart suit and polished shoes, and a pair of thick glasses resting on his long nose. He had a small brown mustache that was neatly groomed, and short cropped hair. With his cane in one hand and his hat under his arm, he stuck his gloved hand out in greeting to Hugh.

"Mr. Montgomery, I presume. It's a pleasure." He said politely, shaking Hugh's hand. Taking off his gloves, he threw his accessories behind him without looking. Joseph had to scramble to catch them, and the old man looked rather winded. "Be a sport and take my bags to Ivydowns, Jeeves. Step to it." Looking miffed, Joseph bowed and gave Hugh a look of warning before shutting the door. "Adelaide. It's been quite a time since I've seen you." Adelaide gave a formal curtsey in greeting, looking up to meet the man's gaze with a tentative smile.

"Quite so, my dear cousin." She replied "I must say, you look very smart--" Perseus held up his hand and Adelaide quickly stopped talking.

"No time for chit chat you know. Show me the paperwork, please." Adelaide gestured to the desk, where he sat and began to look over the documents. "And how's your needlework coming along, Adelaide?" She looked half taken aback, but responded.

"Well it's improved, surely. I have been at it for many years now." Without looking, Perseus answered.

"Very good. I heard you've helped organize several parties out here, all of which ended quite terribly. That's no way to market yourself. You are almost a crone now, Adelaide. No one marries girls past the age of twenty five, you know." Adelaide blushed, but folded her hands behind her back and responded calmly.

"There were extenuating circumstances, Percy, you must underst--" he held up his hand again to stop her.

"An unmarried woman should not refer to a man so informally. We wouldn't want people to think you're improper, now would we? You may call me Mr. Lovelocke." Adelaide threw Hugh a frustrated glance, clearly biting her tongue. "Why don't you run along and get afternoon tea ready? Let the men discuss privately for a moment." Looking more annoyed than ever, Adelaide curtsied again and left the room.
~

Fausta laughed again as Duncan asked her about children. She could see the dreamy look in his eye and knew that he was already seeing into the future. She broke off another piece of carrot and let Love lip it from her plam as Duncan gently brushed the mare.

"I would love to have many children, Amore." She replied "What do you think? Six? Seven? How many do you like?" Duncan's jaw fell open and his eyes nearly popped out from his skull, causing her to howl in laughter at his reaction. Seeing her laugh, he placed a hand over his heart and scolded her softly.

"Darling, do not tease me so! My heart nearly stopped!"

"Oh, what?" She said, sticking out her tongue. "Too many? Or too little?" He staggered a bit and she laughed again. "No, amore. I was being serious. We can have as many as you like. Ricci women are strong. My mother had five of us, after all." Duncan lit up at her words, looking like a giddy child. He came out of the stall and brought her into a deep kiss, which she happily returned. Once they broke apart, Fausta moved away a little. Flipping her hair over her shoulder she continued. "besides, it is, how you say unmattering now." Duncan tilted his head in question, looking perplexed. Shaking her head, she took his free hand and placed it on her belly.

"You ARE going to be a father, amore. The doctor told me so last week."

Hugh immediately did not like the air of the dreaded cousin, he swept into the room bringing about an aura that was almost as dull and stale as his eyes. The handshake was limp and left Hugh feeling like a routine had been destroyed. Hugh made a mental note to thank Joseph for dealing with the nuisance, and frowned at Perseus as he reprimanded Adelaide and the state of her being. The man peered over his glasses down at the papers Adelaide had neatly organized on her desk. Hugh's frown deepened when Adelaide was sent away for tea. He wished desperately to take her into his arms and soothe away the line that had developed above her brow, a sure sign she was exerting great force in remaining the picture of a gentlewoman. Their eyes locked for a brief moment before she left the room and the frown that had been directed to her cousin shifted to an upward curve. With a small click the door closed behind her and Hugh let himself focus on the present, everything within him wished to protect the woman he had chosen for his own.

"I can't imagine what you would want to speak with me about." Hugh said, his voice syrupy thick with forced manners, he settled into the chair across from Perseus and quirked a brow up to the ceiling. "Miss. Lovelocke has been spearheading the business with practicality and with a mind for success, she would be far more capable of answering any queries you may have." Hugh leaned forward then, grabbing a feathered pen. He wanted something to fiddle with, and moved the writing instrument between his fingers flipping the brown patterned feather absentmindedly.

Perseus chose to give him an exasperated look and Hugh sighed shaking his head, gesturing for Perseus to continue with his business.

~

She made all his dreams come true, Duncan let his surprise and glee over the idea of many children show through an open mouth and wide eyes.

"It's perfect he answered. I will take as many as I can get." Duncan said as they left the stall; unable to resist her any longer he pulled his future wife into a deep kiss. when they parted he smiled warmly at the glowing woman before him. It took him a moment to register when she took his hand and placed it over the firm press of her abdomen. Her news had his hand stiffening in surprise against her dress. His head snapped up to catch her gaze.

"You're-" His voice cut off as a shout bubbled up from his throat and out into the universe. Love, back in her stall whinnied at the sudden noise but Duncan could not move away from Fausta to check on her. Instead he dropped to his knees, his head level with the small bit of life they had created. He peered at the folds of her dress as if he could see right through her to her core. He let out another shout of surprise as he jumped up to gather Fausta into his arms and lift her up, twirling her around, he set her down after a couple spins and rained kisses over her face and lips.

"You are going to be a mother, I'm going to be a father!" His words were fast and his breathing seemed to have quickened. "Our child..." He murmured pressing his hand to her belly again. He felt a tear slip from his eye as emotion filled and swelled within him. He kissed her again, long and deep, savoring everything about her. When he pulled away his eyes were alight with the fire of his joy. "I like the name Aster for her."

Perseus looked rather unimpressed with Hugh's thoughts on his cousin. Continuing to sift through the paperwork, he spoke in a dry tone.

"Come now, Mr.Montgomery. Addy was a spoiled, sheltered child who had everything she ever wanted for dropped into her lap. I knew my uncle well--well enough to know he would not have her take to such things as business. If these numbers are correct--then she's had help and plenty of it. No one could do all of this in under a year without any training whatsoever." He turned to Hugh and pushed his glasses up his nose. "You have no need to consort with Addy for her business. Indeed, you have a fine one of your own. I assume that you are helping her out of pity, or perhaps of hopes to marry her. Obviously a man has been running things since my uncle passed."

Adelaide returned to the room with a drink cart. She curtsied for the men and wordlessly began to set up the tea service. She served them both a sweet black tea--one that Fausta had brought back from Italy. Cream and one sugar for Hugh, and lemon for Perseus. Adelaide gave herself nothing, and came to stand beside an empty chair demurely. "You may sit." Perseus told her stiffly.

"Thank you, Mr. Lovelocke." Adelaide replied, smoothing down her skirts as she did so and then folding her hands into her lap. She gave a polite smile and waited. Perseus sniffed at the tea accusingly and placed it down without drinking.

"Now, Addy, speak up. And don't lie to me." He sighed "How much aid has Mr. Montgomery here been giving you with the business, hmm?" He looked at her pointedly. Adelaide bit the inside of her cheek, hard, to avoid scowling. Taking a calming breath, she replied before her lover could jump in.

"He has only been giving me assistance as a neighbor, Mr. Lovelocke." She replied evenly. "After father passed I learned from his associates and partners about our company. Mr. Montgomrey has had absolutely no hand in the business at all. It would be inappropriate for him to have access at all." Adelaide gave a perfectly warm smile, forcing her hands to stay in her lap instead of fidgeting with her necklace. So he's getting revenge, is he?
*

"Si, si!" Fausta laughed with delight as Duncan leapt about like a child. He was overwhelmed--energy pouring from his very skin in waves. His joy could have outshone the brightest star in that moment, and she loved him even more for it. Duncan began to speak of names and Fausta laughed again, pushing him away a little. Holding one hand over her belly protectively, she teased him. "Oh? Who said you could pick the name, amore?" Duncan looked confused and lost for a moment and she snickered. "I do not see you doing the work, no? I must carry the melon on my stomach, and I must grow him from nothing, yes? And then it is I who must bring him out screaming." She gave him a mischievous, haughty look. "Tell me, doesn't that mean I deserve the name?" She took his face in one hand and squeezed his cheeks between her fingers. "Besides, what if it is a boy?" She winked and sauntered out into the garden, her lover trailing after her like a hopeless puppy.

"I...suppose you can be choosing the middle names." She relented. "If you earn it. Up for the challenge?" He jumped up eagerly with another shout. "I expect to be treated like a Madonna while I do this for you, yes? You must be at my beck and call as often as you can. And if you want more you must be getting used to it, too, yes? After all, pregnant women can't go hunting or out dancing at parties. I expect you to entertain me." One more look into his big, beautiful eyes and she melted, laughing again as he took her into his arms and embraced her tightly. "Amore, you will make the most wonderful father." She whispered in his ear.

Here was another who took absolute pleasure in doubting Adelaide in all her being. Perseus was short and too the point, his narrow perspective unwilling to let a woman in any sort of power. His brow raised at the thin mans presumptions and he found he could not give Perseus the satisfaction of announcing his commitment to Adelaide. There seemed something sour about sharing his hopes and dreams with him. Adelaide returned and Hugh straightened, smiling appreciatively as Adelaide offered him tea done his favorite way. He sipped at the warm drink and let the aroma soothe him. The feeling was short lived however as Perseus continued his questioning, Adelaide remained as calm as cool as a lake on a sunny morn, and answered.

"Indeed it would be quite inappropriate." Hugh agreed setting the cup down, his stern blue eyes meeting the dull orbs of the cousin. "The advice given merely has been over my area of expertise which is the shipment and delivery of goods. Adelaide had wished to import some fabrics from Italy. With our proximity as neighbours it was quite beneficial for the both of us to strike up business. However I have had no part to play in the running's of LoveLocke wear." Hugh said, his voice pleasant despite the company.

He didn't want to share too much, wanting to give Adelaide all the space she needed to defend her company without him stepping on her toes. She had proven herself a fine woman both in house and in business, and he was proud of what she had accomplished. He kept quiet, ready to be the silent sentinel for his queen.

~

Fausta had made some very fine points on the matter, and it was certainly true that Duncan had done his part and the rest was up to Fausta. He was determined to be with her every step of the way however and he smiled as she squeezed his face with her hands. She was a goddess, and she was carrying their child, the pride he had for their love swelled deep in his chest. She broke him with her last words and his arms curled around her. Duncan rested his head on her shoulder and breathed in her scent.

"I love you." He whispered in return. "We shall raise a fine army of children. All of them with our dashing good looks, I demand beautiful children Fausta." He joked with her as they parted from their hug. Their hands joined and they began the walk back to Westwoods when they spotted Joseph walking towards them with a number of bags hanging from his arms.

"What have you there sir?" Duncan asked rushing forward to catch one of the bags that had begun to slip from the mans hands.

"Some man came for Adelaide." Joseph said tipping his head in thanks as Duncan took a few more of the bags to assist. "A cousin of some sort, asked me to send his bags to Ivydowns." Joseph's nose wrinkled at the memory of Perseus and Duncan quirked a brow upward, his eyes moving to look at Fausta.

"I sense we are about to do a bit of spying again." He chuckled.

Perseus scoffed audibly as they spoke, rolling his eyes. He put the papers down and shifted his chair to face them. "Addy..." He said in a coddling tone, as if speaking to an errant child. "I was hoping to hear the truth, but fine. If you want to be this way, it shall be this way." He stood and brushed off his suit, taking advantage to stare down Adelaide from his new height. "My visit is simply a formality. There's no way an unmarried woman such as yourself could ever run the Lovelocke business. Especially not one with such a...reputation as yourself." Adelaide paled slightly at his comment, but held his gaze. "Uncle did a fine job in life of keeping your secrets, dear cousin. In death he was not so kind. The main family has decided that you will sign over your assets and rights to me." Adelaide nearly fainted at his words, gripping the arm of her chair to steady herself and placing one hand over her heart.

"What?" She choked. Perseus almost couldn't contain his satisfied grin.

"Well, it's simply best for everyone. the company will continue to profit and the family will save face. I'll likely sell Ivydowns, if I can, and move the main practice to London with me. You may either move back to the main estate, or to Saint Johnathan's Hospital outside of Yorkshire. I'm sure your dogs will fetch a high price as well, since they're thoroughbred and highly trained." He looked down his nose at her. "I've brought all the necessary documents. You can sign them tomorrow, and I'll of course give you time to relocate wherever you choose. A month should suffice, don't you think?"

Adelaide could feel herself slipping back into that old feeling of panic. Like the room was closing in on her. Her throat began to tighten as her breathing quickened, the room began to spin. One hand rose to clutch at her throat. They were going to force her out? Charles, all the people who had raised her would be homeless, and out of work. Her beautiful dogs sold off to some stranger, separated... Hugh... gone from the only person who loved her so... The business she had worked so hard to build...To live in the hospital at the mercy of doctors, alone... or at the estate as a pariah... Off, off, off! She couldn't breathe. Adelaide needed the necklace off, now! A horrible choking sob burst from her throat as tears began to bubble over. She had tied the knot too tightly, or she was too weak from shock. No matter how she pulled the damn thing wouldn't loosen!

"My god!" She heard her cousin's voice faintly, as if through a crowded room. "She's having a fit! Quickly, someone call the police!" There was a loud bang that next moment, and Adelaide was suddenly aware of a warm presence around her. Finally, her choker was removed, her skin red from her struggling. She doubled over, her head in her lap as she let out ragged gasps of breath. There was shouting in the distance, but a soft feeling on her back. As if someone was touching her gently, trying to soothe.
~

Fausta helped the elderly butler and Duncan load the luggage onto the carriage, before she gave her love a delightedly devilish smile. Placing her hand in his, she laughed as they ran to the house like children with a secret. The maids directed the couple to the parlor, and the two positioned themselves outside the door to listen. With each passing word Fausta grew quieter and quieter. When the arrogant man called for the police, she couldn't help herself. Throwing open the doors she began to rush for him, swearing loudly in her mother tongue.

Fausta grabbed the letter opener up from a small table and began to make for Perseus, but Duncan stopped her.

"<No, amore!>" She yelled, struggling to regain control of the weapon. "<I will NOT let anyone hurt her again! I'll kill him!>" Duncan, however, had kept his calm somehow, and managed to disarm her after a few minutes of struggling. Her hair flying wildly, Fausta spit at Perseus, looking like an enraged bull. Duncan called for the man to be shown out. Once Perseus was safely away, her lover grabbed her roughly by the arms.

"Fausta! Stop it! This will accomplish nothing."

"<She is my family, Duncan! Do not tell me you weren't going to yourself, I know it to be a lie!>" She met his calm gaze with her smoldering one, still seething. "<So what?! We let them lock her away in-in some stone room forever??>"

Perseus's words grew colder and harsher with ever beat of his heart. Hugh found he could not take his eyes off the man that threatened all that Adelaide had built, rage boiled in his gut and he he was just about to stand and take care of the retched cousin when Adelaide's harsh and shallow breathing captured his attention. Hugh jolted as her tears bubbled over, immediately he was at her side as she began to claw at her neck. Her skin was bright red from the stress he could see the scratch marks as her nails raked down the sensitive skin of her neck. It took him a moment to understand what she was trying to do and he did his best to assist as she writhed in the chair next to him.

"Hold still dearest." He murmured, not caring if Perseus heard, however Adelaide was deaf to his plea as the panic overwhelmed her. Finally with a few tugs the knot came loose and her choker feel free. Her breath came out in gasps, as if she had been under the water far too long. From behind him came the crash of a door being opened and Hugh protectively covered Adelaide's body with as much of his own as he could. Looking to the door he saw Fausta charging in like a war goddess, her hair flew out behind her as she rushed Perseus. The cousin let out a yelp of surprise as a letter opener was turned against him.

~

Duncan rushed in behind Fausta, he had recognized the pure fury behind those eyes and knew whoever it was directed at was surely going to regret it. Her hands found the letter opener on the desk and with a string of less than polite words she began to advance. Duncan forced himself between the blade and the man who certainly deserved it, and gripped at her wrist. They struggled a while, Fausta's strength and determination evenly matching his own, however his cool head seemed to have the leg up against her blind fury and soon the knife clattered to the floor. Perseus was helped to the door by some very eager house workers and had the door shut smartly in his face despite his stuttering angry words, demanding an explanation.

"This is not over!" He screeched loud enough for the estate to hear.

Duncan held tight to Fausta, holding her arms steady, after his plea her anger turned to him and he braced against the heat emanating from her.

"You know we would never let that happen!" He retorted. "And I would not let you be locked away forever either for murder! What on earth was going through your mind amour? I can't believe-"

"Quiet!" Barked Hugh at the quarrelling couple cutting Duncan off mid rant. Both Fausta and Duncan quieted and Adelaide's soft sobs filled the void of sound. Immediately they came forward, realizing their anger was doing nothing but adding more fire.

"Apologies love." Duncan whispered, his hand shook as he knelt in front of Adelaide and rested it on her shoulder. "Take your time."

"Just focus on breathing." Hugh coached, running what he hoped was a soothing hand down Adelaide's back. Fausta settled next to Duncan and despite their outburst the two joined hands, their fingers lacing tightly.

All the commotion and voices sounded as if they were submerged deep underwater--like she was only hearing the ripples along it's surface. Adelaide's body was paralyzed with fear, overwhelmed by the roaring of her own heartbeat in her ears. After an excruciating twenty minutes, she was finally able to speak and move. When she looked up to find her dearest companions all crowding her through her hazy vision, Adelaide couldn't help but begin to cry again.

"I-I'm so sorry..." She murmured, her hands gripping the lapels of Hugh's coat tightly, still shaking. They smiled at her, all worry and kindness and she felt like an imposter. Adelaide buried her face into Hugh's chest. "...don't let go, please..." She begged him softly, a barely audible whisper. Suddenly, the world shifted and she was moved onto his lap. Hugh's strong arms encircled her tightly, as if he could protect her from her own heart. "I'm sorry about this mess." Adelaide apologized again, meekly. "I was just so caught off guard by Percy's statement. I can't believe they're forcing me to leave.." Adelaide's body ached as her muscles finally began to relax, and her neck stung where her nails drew blood from her panic. Duncan, seeing this, called for Charles.

A medicine kit was fetched and fresh tea made. Hugh bandaged her wounds himself, his rough hands impossibly soft and gentle on her raw skin. Adelaide received a cold compress for her swelling eyes, and curled up into her lover's lap as she tried to make herself as small as possible. She felt powerless again.

"So?" Fausta's voice cut through the tension in the room as the couples settled. "What we are doing about this?"
~
Fausta was still smoldering with her anger, but kept it in check for Adelaide's sake. Her struggle with Duncan had caused quite a bad friction burn on her wrist, but it was bandaged now and only ached dully. She refused to touch the tea, leaning against Adelaide's desk with her arms folded and her brow furrowed. The Lovelockes were a powerful family in England, rooted in aristocracy and with enough money to do what they liked. In no small part thanks to Adelaide, ironically enough. Fausta chewed at her bottom lip in frustration and absently put one hand over her belly.

It wouldn't matter much if she had killed the vile man--they would simply send another. There was only one option that she could see, and she knew the brothers wouldn't like it. Fausta gave Duncan and Hugh both meaningful looks, and pointedly stared at Hugh's breast for a moment. This presented other problems as well, of course, but everything in due time. Sighing heavily, Fausta ran one hand over her face and looked out the window. She had been hoping for a happier occasion for her and Duncan's announcement. Looks like it would have to wait.

Duncan helped to hold Adelaide's hair back as Hugh tended to her, once they were finished Duncan moved to sit behind the desk Perseus has previously taken up and looked over the paper work Adelaide had left out for him. There was much that showed the company was doing well and on its way to its most profitable year yet. His brow furrowed as he picked up a paper and leaned back to inspect further as Fausta's question rang through the room. Duncan paused and looked over at his lover and noticed her pointed look towards Hugh. His gaze followed hers and he looked over the couple. Hugh's arms were around Adelaide encasing her in all the comfort and warmth he possessed. She seemed to have made herself as small as possible and Adelaide buried her face into the crook of Hugh's shoulder and neck, the cool compress still covering her eyes, so she missed the look that Fausta gave.

Duncan noticed how Hugh's neck bobbed in understanding and the muscle in his jaw bunching as he clenched it. The older brother stood then, letting the paper float back to the surface of the desk. His throat cleared and he went to perch next to Fasuta on the desk.

"Fausta and I will do what we can to protect you." He promised Adelaide, who still remained still in Hugh's arms.

"No one will be forcing you to go anywhere." Hugh added, "Not if I can help it."

~

Hugh could feel Fausta's gaze burning a hole in his face and he knew what she wished of him, a small bit of sadness filled him as he had wished for more perfect circumstances but he knew what Fausta suggested was certainly the most logical course of action. He caught his brothers gaze and nodded his head lightly towards the door, Duncan got the message and with a gentle hand he placed it over Fausta's shoulder.

"Come love, let's see if we can do some meddling elsewhere." He said, the usual playfulness of his tone just falling short. It pained him to see Adelaide and Hugh poked and prodded until they hurt more than any one person deserved. When Duncan and Fausta were out of the room and the door was closed Hugh let the silence settle over them for a while. Hugh closed his eyes and took some deep cleansing breaths before he shifted slightly and lifted his hands to brush it down her shoulder and arm.

"Adelaide dearest. When you are ready I would very much like to take us to the back garden. I know the air is cool still but perhaps outside might be a better change of scenery." Hugh pressed a kiss to the top of her head and waited for her response.

Fausta and Duncan exited the room and found their way to the study. Duncan poured himself a glass of whiskey, and she could sense that he was still cross with her. Flopping down onto the chaise as he drank, Fausta sighed heavily, blowing a long curl from her face. Leaning against the arm, she propped up her feet after kicking off her shoes.

"<Duncan...>" She said evenly. "<I will not apologize for what I did, though I am sorry I angered you.>" She could see his shoulders sag a little as the window framed him, and a heavy sigh fell from his lips. "<I know, love, I have said all of this before. But I can only control my temper so much. When it comes to those I love..." She shrugged, helplessly. "<I am at the whims of my emotions. Is this part of me too difficult to love?>" Fausta asked him earnestly. Worry was set deep into the lines upon her brow, and swimming in her near black eyes.

Adelaide nodded into his chest, and after a small while more, she was able to part with him enough for them to make it to the gardens. Along the way, a young abbey had to stifle a gasp of surprise, and all the servants they passed averted their eyes from her bandaged neck. An almost nauseating sense of familiarity crept over her, but Adelaide simply held Hugh's hand that much tighter and swallowed her pain. After what seemed an eternity, they had made it out of the house.

The crisp, cold air hit her aching lungs and stung, slightly. But Adelaide inhaled deeply, suddenly glad to be away from the manor. Still a little weak and wobbly from the shock, Hugh helped her into one of the garden chairs. Adelaide took a moment to simply listen to the subtle sounds of the wilderness around them, and soak up the slight warmth of the weakening sunlight.

"I'm so sorry, Hugh." She said softly, breaking the tension in the air. "I seem to bring nothing but trouble to you, when all you desire is peace." She gave him a rueful smile.

Duncan peered out the window to the outside, where he saw trees swaying slightly in the wind, it was clear evening was well on its way and soon the stars would be above them again. He sighed deeply and did not look back to Fausta as she explained herself, he could sense the worry in her voice as she asked her final question. Turning on his heel Duncan set down his snifter and moved to kneel next to Fausta as she reclined, his gaze steady on her face.

"Every fiery bit of you is easy to love." He began, his voice gentle. Duncan reached out to rest a hand over hers. His fingers squeezed gently, silently reinforcing his words. "You are a protector, and you will dive into danger without a second thought for those you love. Your loyalty and passion are some of the traits I love most about you." Duncan took a deep breath pausing, as his hand slid from hers and up towards her stomach. "You are strong and capable of anything, however-" Duncan paused abruptly, from the furrow of his brow and the set of his jaw, it was clear Duncan was trying to find the right words. His palm flattened over the small life they had created that nestled in her womb. "I know our child will be every bit as strong-willed as its mother, and I realize this is still quite new for the both of us. But I do wish perhaps in the future, while you carry; your mind considers the well-fare and future of the both of you in tense moments."

Duncan winced at the words and looked away. "My mother hated it when people told her what to do while she held grew John and Hugh." Lifting Fausta's hand he pressed his lips to her knuckles for a long moment. "No matter your choices, I shall always be there to protect you."

Hugh let Adelaide settle in the garden chair, while she took in their surroundings and listened to the songs of the birds that settled in the trees around them, he took in her features. The dip and sweep of her nose, her mouth that normally was curved upward in a smile was flat now. The bright scars of her neck were covered with the bandages. There was something sad in her eyes as she broke the silence between the two of them, her apology was the last thing he wanted to hear.

"I desire you Adelaide." Hugh corrected, his words bold. "Certainly I enjoy peace, but what I crave is you; and these unique experiences to nothing to dim the flame I hold for you." Hugh paused for a moment drawing the courage within himself, he rubbed a hand down his face and silently told himself he could do it. He stood and took the two steps towards Adelaide, his hands coming down on either side of arms of the chair; leaning down he offered her a smile as he caged her there.

"I had been planning this for quite a while now, I just was seeking the right moment. I wanted it to be perfect for you, but each time the moment never felt as perfect as you deserved." Hugh caught the confusion in her look and pressed a kiss to the line that had appeared between her eyebrows. "I wish I had found a more perfect moment before the arrival of..." Hugh trailed off rolling his eyes heavenward, not wanting to use the cousins name in his current endeavor, clearing his throat he knelt to a single knee before continuing.

"Marry me Adelaide. I want nothing more than to make you smile each day, I want to care for you and have adventures till we grow old and grey. You found my heart cold and shielded, and I cannot thank you enough for teaching me all you have. I will forever be in your debt for teaching me to love." He smiled up at her and pulled out the little napkin that held the ring Aunt Lydia had given to him. He unfolded the cloth and presented the ring. "It was my mothers, something she treasured deeply, it had been a gift from my grandmother, it would honour me to have you wear it."
