Realistic or Modern The Bronze Locket

Fausta laughed as Duncan spoke so boldly, causing the old tailor to roll his eyes and sigh. As the man set about measuring after the fabric was chosen, she watched his happily, her eyes dancing. He asked his next question after observing the other set of lovers with them. Fausta laughed a little and waived her hand airily, holding his gaze as she rolled her eyes.

"<Of course he was.>" She replied with a wry smile "<But I think he's warming up a little. Not much, but some. Your brother is fantastically thick-headed you know.>" The tailor had finished and Duncan was ushered off the stand. He sat beside her and Fausta captured his mouth in a kiss, though she forced herself to cut it short. They would have time later, she told herself. All the time in the world, in fact. Fausta entwined her fingers with his and smiled excitedly. "I have a gift for you, amore." She said "Would you like it now or later? I don't want to be taking from your surprise."

Adelaide was called up next, and Fausta smiled at her friend before returning her attentions to her lover. God. They had been apart half a day and she was so wound up just being near him once more. How badly she'd missed him in that time surprised her a little. All her lovers and none affected her the way he did.
~

Adelaide laughed giddily as Hugh perked up, looking curiously at her. She squeezed his hands again and shook her head teasingly.

"If I told you, it wouldn't be a surprise, now would it?" Duncan had finished with his fitting and she was called up next, releasing Hugh to stand where she was beckoned. They presented her with fabrics, all black in color but with different patterns, sheens and undertones. Adelaide felt them each separately and appraised them in the light, finally choosing a silk with a dark pinkish undertone, flowers decorating it. Signor Rose set to work, his lithe hands pressing gently here and there as he took in her measurements. She was still facing Hugh, so she asked.

"How was your day, Hugh? I hope you had an enjoyable outing."

Duncan chuckled at Fausta's response and shook his head. "<He certainly can't seem to get out of his own head.>" Duncan was then shooed away by Signor Rose and he went to Fausta then, leaning into her kiss and sighing happily. He could feel the passion within her and knew that the evening would bring about fireworks for the both of them. She spoke of a gift and his eyes lit up. He glanced away as Adelaide was called to the pedestal and then quickly looked back at Fausta. His hands capturing hers.

"You didn't have to do that." He said touched. "Thank you love. Let us save both of the surprises for this evening. I think that would be quite splendid." Loving being able to touch her he turned and wrapped his arm around her waist and sank down onto the chaise she had been sitting on earlier. She settled next to him and he nuzzled her happily.

"Paolo is coming soon yes? What shall we do with him?" He asked.

~

Hugh reluctantly let go of Adelaide and thought of joining Fuasta and Duncan but thought better of it when he saw the private moment the two were having. He shook his head a little and moved up to watch as Adelaide selected a lovely silk and he knew instantly she would be stunning in what ever dress the man made. Next came her measurements and Hugh let his eyes move to where Signor Rose measured. He smiled, knowing he had personally kissed her at each place he measured. He blinked suddenly realising that Adelaide had asked him a question.

"Oh yes! ... It was fun! Your friend certainly knows how to set the tone of an adventure." He grinned at Adelaide. "And your day? Was it pleasant? Anything fun?"

Fausta sighed happily as Duncan captured her and settled into the chaise again. His light stubble tickled the sensitive skin of her neck as he nuzzled into her, and she could not help the little burst of giggles that erupted from her. His heartbeat was thrumming through her own chest as they pressed together, and Fausta might have felt dizzy if she'd had a weaker heart. Fausta hummed delightedly at the mention of her brother, grinning.

"That is being a good question, amore. Paolo and his interpreter should be here soon. We could be going to lunch, or do more shopping? There is a public garden near here, it is being beautiful this time of year."

Suddenly, the tailor spoke to Fausta, and she leaned forward to reply, her hands still entwined with Duncan's. As her hair shifted and fell forward over her shoulders, and a deep purpling love bite was shown at the base of her neck. A remnant of their time together the night before, just above the collar of her dress. The conversation finished, and she returned to her place in his arms, looking up at her lover with shining eyes. "So? What would you like to be doing?"
~

Hugh seemed to shake himself from a small daze as she asked him, and Adelaide giggled as his eyes met hers. "Fausta creates adventure wherever she goes, it's true." As he smiled, she felt her chest tighten, butterflies erupting in her stomach. Truly, did he know what he did to her? She was faint simply at that smile. The tailor finished, and motioned to her, and Adelaide took Hugh's hand when he offered it to step down from the pedestal. "Duncan and I had a wonderful time. We picked out gifts and planned a few things. Though we did have strange encounter.."

Adelaide trailed off, and before she could explain, Paolo and another dark skinned young man came bundling through the door, all alive with energy. The one she hand't met laughed loudly and bowed, Paolo following suit.

"Greetings, cousins! And Fausta, of course." He rose and winked, his brown eyes sparkling. "Shall we get started on our lovely day together?"

"Get started? You're late!" Fausta teased, rising to meet them. She embraced both boys tenderly, and turned to the rest of them. "This is Renaldo, Paolo's voice. They are quite the match, you see." Ricardo came forward and pressed kisses to Adelaide's cheeks, a custom that she was still getting used to. It left her rather flustered, and after he shook Hugh's hand, Adelaide hid her face into his chest, her cheeks burning.

Duncan hummed over the options that Fausta presented and found he quite liked the idea of a garden, as Fausta's direction was pulled away by Signor Rose he let his gaze move over her. His eyes landed on the mark at the junction of her neck and shoulder and a dark smile moved over him. Memories flashed over his eyes and when she returned his gaze had turned hungry. She playfully asked him what he had decided on and he grumbled low.

"I think the garden, especially if there is a place we can steal away for a few moments." He told her his voice low. He caught Fausta's gaze move past him towards the shop entrance and he stopped himself from whispering all the scenes that moved through his mind to her. He rose and bowed back to the men. He chuckled when Paolo's friend came forward giving Adelaide a kiss for each cheek. The small woman burrowed away into Hugh and he filed that moment away to tease her with later. Moving forward he captured the dark skinned man's hand and gave it a few enthusiastic pumps.

"Thank you for coming to join us! Fausta and I were just discussing what could be done next. She spoke of a garden, perhaps there is a place where we can find a basket lunch to take there?" He let Ricardo translate for Paolo and tilted his head trying to make sense of the different motions and what they meant. He was still learning Italian but perhaps when he mastered it, he would ask Fausta to show him some of the signs.

~

Hugh was left wondering of the strange encounter that Adelaide had, when Paolo and Ricardo entered. He gave both of the man pleasant greetings and found he already enjoyed the bright and happy soul that seemed to make up Ricardo. Adelaide moved into his arms after she was greeted and he let her scent wash over him. Without thinking, his hand reached up to stroke up and down her back. He listened as Duncan greeted the men and they spoke of what was to happen next.

"That sounds lovely. There was a tavern just down the way, I'm sure they have some bottles of wine we could purchase. I am not sure about food however."

Fausta felt a pleasant shiver run through her at Duncan's tone, and a small smile quirked up at the corner of her mouth. After the greetings and introductions were over, she herded the group to the tavern, purchased the necessities and hailed her carriage. It was a bit of a tight fit with all six of them, but the boys were still young and wiry, so it was not too uncomfortable. After about a fifteen minute carriage ride, the group arrived at the public gardens. They meandered through the beautifully groomed foliage and flora for a while, until they found the perfect picnic spot, a grassy expanse beneath the shade of a lovely willow tree.

Paolo and Ricardo had nicked a blanket from the coach, and spread it out in the shade. The boys settled down upon it and began to unpack the picnic, Adelaide and Hugh joining them. Fausta sighed happily, before toeing off her shoes and untying her sun hat, leaving them discarded by the others. With her hair now released in the wind, she looked a wild woman. Laughing, Fausta took Duncan's hand and began to race away, calling back over her shoulder.

"We'll be back soon!" She lead him through the winding pathways, birds chirping in the late afternoon sun as they ran. She released his hand and grinned, catching a corner and darting around, finally stopping in a secluded nook, all covered in vines and budding flowers. Laughing breathlessly, Fausta drew Duncan in close once he reached her, her fingers easily untying his cravat in one smooth motion. She traced along his bare neck with feather light touches, capturing his mouth in a heated kiss. "<Oh, my love,>" She murmured once they broke apart, chests heaving "<I could not wait another moment to have you alone with me.>"

Her dark eyes seemed to glow gold in the dappled sunlight, her features alive with joy and hunger. She did not care where they were, only that they were together.
~

Adelaide settled down next to Hugh as the picnic began to unfold, and watched the other pair dart off into the gardens together. She shook her head with a little laugh, a rose blush coloring her cheeks. What on earth were they thinking? Arranging her skirts so she was more comfortable, Adelaide opened her fan and moved it slowly, the wind cooling her off quite well on it's own.

"What a magnificent place..." She breathed quietly, almost to herself. "The flowers are immaculate, and so colorful! I wonder how many new blooms lay here..." The boys across from them handed each her and Hugh a glass of wine, then, began to arrange the food. Paolo signed to Ricardo and the other boy laughed. Once they had finished their task, the dark skinned boy turned to them.

"Paolo wishes to know what it is like where you come from? Is it cold and rainy as they say?" Adelaide mused over his question for a moment, thinking. She placed her hand atop Hugh's to rest, taking a sip of her wine.

"Well, it often is like that in the city." She told him "But we live out in the country, so it's only about half as rainy as you'd think." She giggled at her own joke.

The gardens were a lovely sight, and the fresh floral scent from the multitudes of flowers hung in the air. The walk with the group was lovely, the men taking turns to carry the baskets and blankets until they came upon and old willow. It's branches were a loose curtain around the base and Duncan thought it most romantic. He joined in with the set up and noticed Fausta taking off her shoes, thinking that was a most brilliant idea he peeled off his boots and the wool sock and let his feet touch the cool grass. Sighing happily he let his toes wiggle over the ground. Fausta broke into laughter next to him and it only took Duncan one look to understand she had an idea. Spurred on by the look in her eye he look her eye and waved to the group in farewell as they raced off.

She forged the path through the expansive garden, filled with corners and long paths. The further they went, the quieter it got; finally Fausta pulled him into a secluded nook. Duncan sank into her sweet kiss and pressed her softly back against the vines and flowers. His cravat was loosened and off within a matter of moments and he growled his approval into her mouth.

"<Just being apart from you for that short time, all I could think about what getting you into my arms.>" He whispered back at her. "You make me burn, Fausta." he said switching to English. He was raining sweet kisses along her jaw and down her neck, noting all the places he had been before. "Fausta..." He breathed her name and took her face in his hands, a smile alighting on his face. "My mind is so filled with you that I fear I might do something crazy." His eyes swept around the area they were in. "Here in broad daylight."

~

Hugh sighed, but found he was not surprised at the lovers choosing to depart at the moment. Were he a braver man, he might have done it as well. He hoped to sneak a few moments away with Adelaide in the gardens, they were certainly most romantic. Adelaide seemed to read his mind as she spoke of the gardens beauty. He gave her a nod of agreement and sipped his wine thoughtfully. Paolo voiced his question to Ricardo who translated, Adelaide answered the question and Hugh found himself agreeing again.

"However the storms that we get in the country always seem a bit more severe than the ones in the country. When I was a boy, some lightning hit a tree near our manor. It was louder than any canon fire." He smiled at the memory. "The tree was certainly a sight to behold. I had never laid my eyes on such intricate marking that the lighting left. It took three days for the tree to stop smouldering." He looked around the food on the blanket and selected a slice of cheese to nibble on.

"Is the weather here drastic? I assuming being near the sea you get far different weather than inland. Feels warmer, perhaps that is why so many different flowers grow here. Never have I seen such a selection."

Fausta hummed happily as Duncan covered her skin in hot kisses, his mouth leaving a burning trail behind it.He took her face in his hands and spoke softly of his desire, and she let out a joyful laugh. Her lithe fingers twined through his soft, dark tresses and she pushed his face forward, gently, to meet hers. Their mouths collided in a passionate kiss that lasted for an eternity. Finally, she pulled away from him, her chest heaving. He looked so beautiful among the greenery, his smile a beacon of light in the shade.

In a throaty whisper, she replied "I am aching for you, Duncan. I am not caring now. Do your worst--and I'll be doing mine, yes?" She gave him a wicked smile as she leaned forward and began to kiss his exposed neck, pressing herself against him as her fingers began to work at the buttons on his coat. Fausta gently scraped her teeth along his sensitive skin, relishing the soft exclamation that arose from him. It had been a long time since she'd done something so daring, but she didn't care. Fausta was drunk on the sunlight and his scent, overwhelmed with the need for him. Among the flowers there were many nooks and crannies to steal away into, and she knew that here they would not be disturbed. It was not so strange for lovers to meet in the seclusion for a rendezvous.

Fausta helped him shuck his coat, leaving Duncan to the rest as her arms bent behind her to work at her corset, her fingers clumsy with desire. "<God, I missed you.>" She murmured between fevered kisses "<I missed you, my love.>"
~

Adelaide settled against Hugh properly as the conversation continued. She smiled as he seemed to calm and relished the subtle vibrations that thrummed through her as he spoke. At his question, Paolo and Ricardo spoke together for a moment. Adelaide watched curiously as Paolo's hands moved fluidly from one sign to the next. Truly, it was a brilliant alternative for those who could not speak, but still it was strange to her. Foreign in a way she had not yet encountered. Ricardo began to speak after his conversation with Paolo concluded.

"Si, signor, our weather is hot and humid many days." He laughed "The ocean has as many moods as a passionate woman, yes? You are never knowing what you will see when you are waking up here." He paused, musing for a moment "Yes, the flowers are radiant. The garden were once being part of the royal family's summer home, before the king was moving it to a bigger city. They are still well kept, as you say." He stopped to watch Paolo sign, and relayed the message. "Our town is very small, but we hope you enjoy your time here. We know that there is not very much to be doing."

Adelaide shook her head, swallowing the grape she'd eaten before replying. "Oh, hardly! We've been having a wonderful time, truly!"

With her acceptance his mind fell loose, free of all of society's rules. In this moment he was filled with nothing but her. His brain felt animalistic in his need to have her, to posses. His hands helped her clumsy fingers and together they removed what remained between them. Above them, birds called out to one another, filling the air with their sweet songs, adding to their soft sounds of desire. They sank into one another loving with all of the desperation and need that had built from their short time apart.

They held onto one another satiated, in their time together they had sunk down to the ground, a tangle of limbs and some foliage that had broken off in their excitement. Duncan spotted a small flower that had broken off and placed it in Fausta's hair, behind her ear.

"<You amaze me.>" He said, his head falling limply to the ground to look at the sky. It took him several moments before he remembered that they were expected at the picnic. Chuckling he slowly got this feet, muscles aching from use. He helped Fausta to her feet and the two of them got to work dressing one another and themselves. Even after they were finished, he could not seem to keep his hands off of her. They returned to the picnic hand in hand leaning close to one another, conspiratorial smiles shared.

~

Hugh chuckled at the mention of the sea being a passionate woman and he knew he could understand. He listened as the boys told them the history behind this beautiful place and he found it all rather like a fairy tale. Adelaide spoke before he could, insisting that they both were having a splendid time and he agreed. Especially with her settled against him so comfortably, he loved having her there, she seemed to fit so perfectly against him. His hand came up to stroke along her arm, absentmindedly he traced the curve of muscle there.

"We are very short into our vacation here, but I am already certain this trip is the most pleasant one I've ever been on. It's Adelaide's first trip away from home and we could not have picked a finer destination." He looked around and picked out a small meat cake to take a bite off, he offered another bite to Adelaide. "So how was it you two were brought together?"

"Excellent question." Duncan said, appearing with Fausta under the shade of the tree. He was mussed up, and a small twig stuck out of his hair, both himself and Fausta were glowing with a satisfaction that only comes from a secret tryst together. Duncan settled with Fausta along side their companions and took the glass of wine offered to him and passed it to Fausta before getting another for himself.

"And before you answer, might I suggest a toast. To love." He beamed at everyone, clearly nothing could get in the way of his mood.

Adelaide took the bit of sweet meat that Hugh offered her, a slight blush about her cheeks at his gentle attentions. The warm sunlight combined with the gentle breeze was comforting, and Adelaide found she had to fight to keep her eyes open. The morning's activities had certainly worn her out, but she hadn't guessed just how much. Before she could even yawn, Duncan and Fausta returned, sharing that secret smile of theirs.

"Oh, my!" Adelaide mutterd to herself, opening her fan to hide the blush as she realized what had happened. Everyone settled once more and Duncan proposed his toast, making Fausta laugh and Adelaide smile. They raised their glasses and she said softly "To love." Her eyes were focused on Hugh, feeling briefly overwhelmed by her own feelings for him. She felt as though she might burst, any moment. Ricardo then turned to Paolo and focused on his hands as the other boy began to tell the tale.

Adelaide leaned her head upon Hugh's shoulder, her eyes getting heavy again. Though she was not quite asleep, she was also not really awake, her breathing beginning to slow and even.
~

Fausta hummed happily as she sipped on her wine, the peaceful scene making her at ease. When she saw Adelaide begin to doze quietly on her lover's shoulder, an idea of her own formed in her mind. She placed her glass down and rearranged herself so that her head was upon Duncan's lap, the sunlight illuminating her features gently as she gazed up at him, her hair fanned out wildly across his legs. She giggled like a girl, then turned her head to watch as Ricardo translated.

"I was born deaf. My parents searched far and wide for experts and doctors to help me when I was small, but little is known about it, in truth. When they were finally able to find a few good people, they began to search for ways to help me communicate. I started out by simply writing, and for a while, it worked. I went through tutors and teachers rapidly, you see, very few people are equipped to teach those that are like me. I wanted to be able to express how I felt like everyone else, and that is when I discovered music. The violin was a wonderful way to speak to my family, and they say that from a young age I was creating intricate songs and using them as conversation. Though I don't remember much. I was in love with my music, but my father says that one day I played a song so full of longing that he wept, for it sounded like a prayer for aid.

My parents then set to work finding a translator to give me a proper voice. Again, I cycled through many capable men and women. Sometimes I found them too stiff and demeaning, and others my parents said simply didn't sound like me. Like my music or my wit. Finally, my brother Ezio discovered a boy going to his charter school that was gifted in language. Indeed, he was many years younger but had already nearly mastered english. It was Ricardo. We offered him a wage and a room at the villa, if he would learn to speak with me and be my voice." Ricardo and Paolo shared a warm, affectionate look together as he paused. "I owe much to him. Indeed, he is not only my greatest friend, but a part of me. I cannot imagine my life without him, now."

Ricardo laughed, loud and long, rustling his hair with his fingers, a bashful blush on his cheeks. "Paolo, please! You flatter me too much.." Paolo reached across the gap between them and caressed the other boy's face gently, a smile upon his lips. He took his hands away and signed again, making Ricardo blush a deep scarlet. "Amore!" He said, scolding him gently. Fausta smiled. She knew the boys' secret all too well, and felt in her heart that her friends would welcome them as she had.

Hugh felt as Adelaide settled neatly against him and he brushed a gentle thumb over the spot where her wrist, tracing the small dips and curves of her slender hand. Her breathing was even and leaned forward a bit to see that her eyes had fallen closed, her lashes resting gently against her cheeks. He smiled and felt quite like a protector in this moment. He listened to Paolo and Ricardo share their tale, and made mental notes to tell Adelaide about later, so she might be caught up. As he listened it became clear that the two men were more than friends. His eyes softened and in the soft glow of the sun under the tree he could not find a fault in the two men before him. There was such clear love between the two and Hugh was once again struck by the concept; love was a curious thing, Hugh was delighted the men before him had found it.

"That is lovely." Hugh said softly as they finished, he did not wish to interrupt the men in their moment, he looked over at his brother and Fausta and saw the two of them nestled together. The same expressions and easy glow of love were on their faces as well. It seemed that Italy was certainly a place for passions of the heart.

~

Duncan gazed down at the woman in his lap and moved his fingers through her dark hair, the strands fanned out from her head and down his legs to rest gently in the grass. Her smile made him feel like the luckiest man alive. He was quite eager to take her out in the evening and romance her in every way of the word. Her brothers story made him lift his head and give them his full attention. At the boy's affection he looked over to Hugh to see his brothers reaction and saw a man who seemed to long for the same. He sighed quietly, the fool had such little knowledge of his depth. He watched Hugh look down to Adelaide then, an expression of peace and happiness moving over him.

"I may have to shoot him if he continues blundering on like this." He said quietly enough for only Fausta to hear. He then turned his attention back to the men and he smiled. "I agree with with Hugh, you fellows seem well matched. You will be attending the opera together I assume? I am quite elated to be able to hear the Madonna. Her praises have been sung far and wide. Our Aunt Lydia will certainly be quite envious."

The lunch before them was slowly depleted, the bottles of wine now empty. Soon it grew time for them the head back to the house. The sun turning a soft orange as evening crept closer. The group packed up their things and made their way back to the carriage. Soon they were all squeezed in and laughing at some joke Duncan had told. The carriage set off through the streets and back towards the Ricci manor where the couples could get ready for their evenings together.

Adelaide was woken gently by her lover as the lunch wound to a close. She blushed heavily and stuttered out apologies, muffling her yawn with a gloved hand. The group bundled into the too small carriage, and had a wonderful time in mirth on the way back to the villa. Once they managed to file out and stretch their limbs, Paolo and Ricardo bid the goodbye, as they had to attend Paolo's violin practice. As Fausta and Duncan entered the house, Adelaide idled for a moment, tugging on Hugh's hand to stop him. The man turned to face her, and Adelaide reached up to kiss him on the lips, once. It was a slow, lingering kiss, full of soft affection. She pulled away, the sunset's shadows coloring her olive eyes near black as she smiled up at him.

"My love, I admit I got a present for you. Would you like it before or after dinner?" She was sure the paintings had arrived by now, the town was small and the Ricci's drew in much of the tourists that kept it running smoothly. After dinner would give her more time to arrange the surprise, but before would give her the satisfaction of seeing him open it right away. She bounced a little on the balls of her feet in excitement, feeling jittery.
~

Fausta laughed dryly at Duncan's whisper, lifting her arm and waving her hand before him lazily. "<Let me shoot him, love. I'll make sure not to hit any vital points.>" As her brother continued his story with Ricardo, she was delighted to see her friends be so nurturing. Love was a thing to be fostered, after all. They passed the afternoon in golden drenched peace, lazily hanging about the gardens and enjoying each other's company. Soon enough, the group was back home, she and Duncan went inside after her brother departed for his lessons.

Once inside the villa, she instructed a servant to fetch her father, and as they waited, she wound her arms around Duncan's neck, pressing her forehead to hiss and humming a little tune softly. Fausta began to sway back and forth, just a little. "I am being very excited to have dinner with you tonight, amore." She purred, feeling happiness erupt within her like champagne bubbles. She kissed his nose as her father came, and squeezed his hand as she turned towards the stairs. "I will go and be getting ready, yes?" She began the climb to her rooms and tried to think of what outfit would be best. Something simple? something elegant? So many options to choose from...

Rocco smiled, clapping Duncan on the shoulder and laughing as he spoke.

"I heard you wished to speak business, my boy! Come, I am happy to talk so with a cousin."

The trip back to the manor brought more sights for Hugh to take in. Much like the night previously, he enjoyed taking in the town as it slowly tampered off and became rolling cliff-sides that lead to the Ricci's. He spotted some boats out on the ocean again and the sun glinted off the waves sending soft orange lights dancing over the water. He found it quite peaceful and was even more relaxed as the carriage stopped. Duncan and Fausta seemed to rush right in, followed closely by Paolo and Ricardo. He made a move to follow them when Adelaide stopped him, her hand catching his. Without a word she had her mouth on his and a lingering kiss that sent him reeling. Her outbursts of bold passion always drove him wild and he eagerly met her lips, brushing teeth and tongue over her soft mouth.

She pulled away then offering him a surprise, and it took Hugh a few moments to collect his thoughts and consider his options. Immediately his mind knew he wanted to wait until after, he was certain any such surprise would be something he would much rather take his time thanking her for.

"Perhaps after supper." He said, not wanting to enter the house yet he wound his arms around her waist and pulled her tight to him. His head dipped and he once again claimed her mouth for a long passionate kiss. "It just so happens I have a surprise for you as well." He told her, his voice husky. "Your dear friend Fausta helped me, I cannot take all the credit, but I do hope you will enjoy it." He chuckled then thinking of the fiery woman. He reluctantly let her go then and took her hand instead, not wishing to be without her touch and the two of them began to walk inside.

~

Duncan entered the Ricci mansion with Fausta and laughed joyously at her excitement for the evenings surprise. He cocked his brow at her mention of dinner but supposed the woman was brilliant enough to deduce just about any surprise out of him. He resisted giving her rump a smack as she left to get ready and instead turned to Rocco.

"See you soon Fasuta!" He called over to her retreating back as he was clapped on the back. Business talk was mentioned and Duncan's eyes opened wide, immediately he turned his head towards the entrance. He caught Hugh's gaze and was about to call for him to join but instead watched as Hugh shook his head and ducked inside a small parlour dragging Adelaide with him. Once Hugh was out of sight Duncan sighed knowing he would have to speak about boring matters for a moment. He gave Rocco an award winning smile and returned to the smaller man and put an arm companionably around his should.

"Yes my dear man! Let us indeed." They moved down the hall and entered what Duncan could only describe as the most opulent study he had ever set foot in. Wall high bookshelves were filled with all manor of spines and objects. Rocco kindly poured him a rather large serving of brandy and the two settled down to discuss. They spoke of what the shipping company might do with a rather large investment and the troubles that owning so many ships held.

Once inside again, Hugh quickly stole her away into one of the many small parlors the house contained. Her brow arched and she released his hand, plating her fists on her hips. "Hugh Montgomery, are you running away from your business opportunity with Rocco?" A bemused half smile played across her lips as she cocked her head to appraise him curiously. She'd never known Hugh to be one to run from a fight. This was a little strange for him. "I know that we're on vacation, but one or two hours of business couldn't possibly kill you, could it? You're lucky, I would love to be able to broaden my contacts so."

Though she scolded him gently, Adelaide couldn't find it in herself to be truly annoyed with him. Hugh had too much of a grip on her heart. She sighed, coming over to him where he stood before the window and gently running her fingers down his lapels, straightening his vest. One gloved hand came and rested against his heart, the pendant he wore to match hers sliding away under the fabric. Her other hand wound up over his shoulder and into his hair, her fingers twining with his ponytail. She toed herself up and gave him another kiss--passionate enough to return the favor he gave her in the garden moments before. But when his fingers dug into her waist and he began to taste of hunger, she pulled away. With a teasing smile and a playful light in her eyes, Adelaide continued towards the door, looking over her shoulder at her lover as he stood half dazed in the golden light. "Go for a little while, yes? Just until dinner. I'll see you later, darling.."

With that she closed the door and muffled a small squeal behind her hand. Blushing madly but managing to compose herself, she gathered her skirts up and beckoned over several maids as she scurried along to her room. Once the orders were given, she began to dress. Adelaide stole a few things from Hugh's trunk--knowing he wouldn't mind once he saw what she was up to. She rolled up the legs of the trousers--as he was quite a bit taller than she. Next, she cuffed the waistband, and secured it with a belt. Though it still looked a bit baggy, it was much better fitting. She threw on one of his comfortable shirts, and then took off her makeup and jewelry, finishing by letting her hair tumble down about her shoulders.

It had taken about a half hour to ready herself, but she rushed down to the beach, barefoot and wild haired as the wind toyed with her locks. It took another hour to finish the preparations, but finally, everything was ready. The picnic blanket spread out with luxurious foods, covered now, of course, with candles to be lit. The horses tied up a stone's throw away and the glow of the setting sun making it all look picturesque. Adelaide squealed in delight, bouncing a little. He would be here any time now--how should she look? What should she say? Was it too sudden, too strange? She worried her bottom lip and went to touch her choker, but her fingers met scarred skin instead. Right. She'd taken it off.

A noise from the path by the house met her ears, and she turned around with a beaming smile on her face.

Fausta hummed happily as she readied herself. Duncan had smelled of the spices from the most popular restaurant in town. It also happened to be her favorite place to eat when she was home. God, he was perfect. How wonderful of him to think of such an evening--just to two of them away together, eating amazing food. No interruptions. She put the finishing touches on her makeup, and stood back to admire herself in the mirror. It was the dress she'd own the night they'd met--though with simpler accessories and makeup. Fausta had her hair half up, the rest cascading over her shoulders in her ever wild curls. Just small glitters of gold around her neck and her wrist this time, no gloves, no pearls or diamonds. She wondered if he'd remember. A smile bubbled up on her lips at the thought of Duncan's face that evening, how starstruck it had been. And how soft it was later, in the moonlight.

Nodding in approval, Fausta donned a small bit of her favorite perfume around her collar and wrists--jasmine and spice. She grabbed his present, hiding the small velvet bag away in her corset and nipped a cream and red shawl from her closet as she left. It was dinnertime by now--surely the boys would be done with business. As the staff bustled about, she came down the stairs, and stepped into the main hall just as the boys and her father existed his office--both men looking winded and a little confused. She smirked, tossing her hair over her shoulder. They must have just come from his trademark "fencing business meeting". Duncan was laughing jovially and the sound made her heart soar.

She giggled, rolling her eyes and calling out "<I see he put you through your paces. Did father actually discuss any business with you both?>"

Hugh chuckled and relented at Adelaide's scolding. He had not wanted to be parted from her but her words rang true, she moved in then, her lips sending fire straight down his spine and stoking the passion within him again. She broke from him just as he was considering throwing her over his shoulder and making a rush for their tower room, her eyes were alight with a playful energy and he grinned back at her. Finally she left the parlour and Hugh took a moment to compose himself before he left the room and walked for Rocco's study.

Stepping inside Hugh caught the gleam of sword blade and his gait came up short. Duncan and Rocco held two épée's. Both men were regarding the fine steel and lifted their heads to regard Hugh. Hugh blinked in surprise when one of the swords was turned on him, the point gleaming as it swing in the air. Duncan made a sound and Hugh looked up in time to see a sword flying through the air in his direction. Reacting quickly Hugh caught the base of the épée and deflected just in time as Rocco's sword came sailing towards him.

"Excellent!" Cried the Rocco, he pulled back and brought the sword forward again for Hugh to parry. Hugh quickly sent the blade away and stepped away from the door to give himself more space to move around.

"What is happening!?" Hugh cried out as he averted another swipe, the blade making a whistling noise in the air.

"We do business like men!" Rocco said excitedly. "Make me proud cousin and we may find each other quite lucrative." Rocco said, his posture straightening and he lifted the sword up to show the first round was over. Hugh followed his motions and the men regarded each other warily. In the background Duncan sipped happily on his bandy. Rocco, twisted then, turning his attention to Duncan and the man's eyes widened as he realised his predicament. Duncan set the glass down on the mantle of a fireplace and reached for one of the swords that hung on the wall next to it. He was able to deflect but at the expense of a glass vase that held some flowers from the gardens. The sound of shattered glass filled the room and Rocco laughed a deep rich laugh, clearly excited at the events. Duncan spent a few good moments deflecting and sending his own attacks Rocco's way, all expertly avoided. The glass crunched beneath their boots and both men grunted with the effort of their duel. Finally after a moment Rocco paused the fight as well and he stood between the two brothers, looking just as pristine and not even a little winded.

"You know if business meetings were always like this I would find them far more interesting." Duncan said blowing a bit of hair out of his face. "You fight well Rocco." He added.

"As do you dear cousin." Rocco said. "Now once more, both of you come at me at once." He readied himself, his feet braced for agile movement.

"That seems hardly fair." Hugh said.

"Indeed." Rocco agreed, "Shame you do not have more brothers." Rocco's brow lifted at his quip and Hugh laughed, he then caught Duncan's eye and the two brothers pounced as one. There was a flurry of movement, the clang of steel against steel and within moments both brothers were disarmed, their swords sailing in the air only to be caught by Rocco. Hugh's eyes widened and he looked down at his empty hand. Rocco's laughter filled the room and he dropped the épée's onto a nearby lounger and rushed towards the brothers gathering them both in a tight group hug. There was only the slightest hesitation before both men returned the hug.

"You fought well Montgomery's. Well done, we may of course do dealings now." Rocco said. The men each poured themselves another healthy serving of brandy and sat down to discuss. By the end of it the Montgomery brothers had also attempted to arm wrestle and a challenge was set for a sort of highland game's to take place for all the men in the house. Shot put, javelin throwing and the like, surely the women of the house would enjoy such fine feats of strength. But then papers were signed and somehow it became clear that the Montgomery enterprise would expand their bases to Italy, with Rocco to spearhead the project and lead from his part of the continent. With a firm shake of hands the men left the room together chatting about how they expected to do and Duncan laughed as Hugh boasted his accuracy with a pistol. They came upon Fausta and Hugh lifted a hand in greeting. She spoke Italian and Hugh laughed at Duncan's awe struck face.

His attention was drawn then by a servant and Hugh said his goodbyes before he stepped away. "Hello sir." The servant said in broken English. "Down the path, waiting." The servant said pointing out a side door. Hugh nodded, understanding for the most part and opened the door. He saw a stone path weave its way down towards the beach. In the evening light he could barely make out the shape of someone on the beach. He found himself a little confused as the shape did not wear a dress, but made his way down anyways. As he came closer the figured turned and it was his Adelaide, smile radiant. Hugh, let out a soft noise, noticing her in his clothes and found he quite liked her like that. He rushed over to her his boots squishing in the sand and caught her, lifting her up and placing a kiss on her mouth. He didn't pull away for a long moment until finally he had to ask.

"What is all this then?" He chuckled.

~

Duncan felt the breath move out of his lungs when his gaze settled on Fausta. She was a goddess, he knew that dress well, on the night they first met. Her words cut through his addled brain and he blinked, hesitating before answering. This made Rocco laugh and he slapped Duncan on the back sending the man stepping forward in order to catch himself. Rocco went over to his daughter giving her a loving hug and a kiss before departing with the servant who had seen off Hugh.

"You look amazing." Duncan said, gathering himself and moving to her. His fingers caught the ruby red fabric near her hip and he grinned at her. "Shame I forgot to bring my uniform. We could have matched." He chuckled and leaned to press a kiss to her cheek. He took her hand then and they made their way outside to the carriage and driver who opened the door for them and they clamoured inside. "We did indeed discuss business. Your father is a smart man. I think with this partnership we will find ourselves heading to Italy often." Duncan said settling next to her. His hand entwining with hers. "Everything is so perfect." Duncan breathed, "It almost does not seem real." He smiled at Fausta and the carriage began to move.

They journeyed back into town, enjoying each others company, stealing soft kisses and touches, arriving at the restaurant, just as the last beams of light dipped below the horizon. The town was lit by oil posts and the restaurant was bathed in an orange glow. From outside Duncan could already hear the soft notes of the violin strings from the rooftop. The owner welcomed them both with a kiss to the cheek and ushered them up the stairs and to the roof, where a round table set for two stood. The bouquet that Adelaide and Duncan had made sat in the middle and the chairs sat close to each other rather than on opposite ends. Already dark wine filled the glasses and the stars began to shine above them. The violin player tucked himself into the corner and played a soft tune, Duncan turned to Fausta then looking for her reaction.

"Surprise." He said softly, his smile warm and eyes filled with love.

Hugh swept her up into his arms and kissed her passionately. Had he not been holding her so close to him, her knees would have given way. God. She almost crumbled right there in the sand. He pulled away after a long moment and spoke softly. Adelaide gave him another bright smile, laughing along with him as she combed her wild hair away from her face. "It's your surprise, my dear." she replied, winding her arms around his neck. Selfish and hungry, Adelaide dipped her head and took another long, passionate draw from his lips. Finally, when she was dizzy and drunk on him, she pulled away. A happy sigh escaped her lips, and he placed her down. She tangled her fingers with his and pulled him excitedly along to the blanket, sitting down and drawing him close after he schucked his shoes and jacket.

Adelaide poured them each a glass of wine, and handed her lover the crystalline goblet. Her eyes shone in the dying sunlight as she smiled again, placing her free hand over his, she spoke. "I remembered that you wanted to visit the beach, and I know how you love to ride, so..." She averted her eyes shyly, feeling nervous all over again. "I thought, maybe, we could spend an evening together like this. It's all Ricci owned, so we shant be disturbed." Adelaide looked back to him with a small smile. "Though I confess, I did want time alone with you, too. Italy is just so terribly romantic, I wanted to...sweep you off your feet, I suppose." Adelaide placed a chaste kiss on his cheek, remembering Duncan's advice as she spoke again.

"I want to spoil you, Hugh. Terribly. I will do everything I can to make this little trip of ours full of warm, wonderful memories for you. You deserve it." The ocean crashed behind them with it's strange, sultry rhythm, and the salty air scrubbed at her soft cheeks somewhat harshly. Adelaide didn't mind at all, her skin hot with rose blush as she busied herself with unveiling the dinner before them, listening carefully for his response. The horses nickered and searched for small morsels to eat in the sand, a few last bird calls ringing through the air.
~

Fausta laughed and shook her head. He lead her into the carriage and she nodded approvingly at his announcement. He twined his fingers with hers and snuggled in close, their bodies pressed against each other as they kissed and caressed softly. They pulled up before the restaurant and disembarked. He lead her down the steps gently and her stomach burst into butterflies. How she felt like a princess. The owner lead them up the stairs onto the golden-drenched rooftop and she gasped.

It was decorated in the most romantic style--soft fabrics in the breeze and flower petals scattered around. A violin player was weaving a tune in the corner, and the candles illuminated the table and the railing. It was like she had stepped into another world, a dream. She walked forward, slowly, placing her clutch and her shawl onto a chair as she moved by the table. After inspecting the space, the bouquet on the table caught her eye. Fausta gasped again, gently touching the flowers.

"Do you know what these mean, my love?" She asked quietly, transfixed. "The flowers here--they say 'I will love you forever'" Fausta turned and saw him standing there--bathed in gold and shining with love. She rushed into his arms, throwing herself around him and hugging him tightly. She pulled away and kissed his mouth over and over, joy overflowing. "Mi stupici!" She exclaimed between kisses. "Mi Stupici, mi amor!"

She felt so right in his arms, laughing and revealing to him that this was her surprise. Before he could speak she was kissing him again, and he happily returned the passion that had come alive in her. When she pulled away he set her down and let her pull him down towards the blanket on the sand. He saw her bare feet and thought that a lovely idea and took off his own boots and coat, letting the grains of sand move through his toes.

"This is... amazing." He breathed out, thanking her when she passed him the glass of wine. She explained further her reasoning and spoke of how she wished to treat him and Hugh felt a warm glow settle in his tummy. He refused to let the nagging thoughts anywhere near this moment and grinned widely at her. "You have done so much for me. I must say I certainly feel spoiled in this moment." He lifted his glass up in the air, proposing a toast to her. "To you Adelaide, may your heart always be filled with the love and kindness that you display for me. Thank you." He clinked against her glass and drank.

She began to prepare the dinner and Hugh placed the glass in the sand and helped set out a few sandwiches filled with thick ham and a side of tomatoes and other veggies. Hugh plucked up one of the small red tomatoes and popped it into his mouth, he crunched happily for a moment and then picked up a tomato and offered to feed Adelaide. "This trip certainly has been more than I could ever imagine. To spend this time with you means the world to me Adelaide. A ride and a swim sound perfect for this evening. I daresay this night will be a memory that I hold onto for many years to come." He flashed her a smile and dug into one of the sandwiches enjoying the rich taste.

"Everything seems to taste better here." He said, wiping his mouth.

~

Duncan's grin grew as Fausta took in the sight, she was a goddess in the moonlight, and he couldn't get enough of her. At her mention of the flowers he preened and stood up a bit straighter, before he could speak however she was in his arms, her mouth on his, fevered praise in-between kisses. He laughed and twirled her around once before setting her on her feet.

"<Adelaide helped me make the bouquet.>" He told her, taking her hand and guiding her to her chair. He settled next to her and the owner appeared up the stairs carrying a tray of food. With great flourish he placed the dishes before the two lovers and lifted the covering to reveal their first coarse.; a small salad with a local dressing and fresh fruits. When the owner left Duncan leaned towards Fausta and whispered. "By now you must know, that what I hold for you in my heart will never disappear. I've never felt anything like this, you've consumed my mind and my heart.... and other things." He couldn't resist adding in the last part. He laughed and lifted up his fork ready to dig into the salad.

"Thank you for bringing me to your homeland. To get to know you like this has been incredible."

Adelaide blushed heavily at his praise, rubbing her neck a little as she smiled bashfully. "Well, I-I'm so glad that you feel that way, my dear." They talked merrily and enjoyed the food, to which she agreed that everything seemed to taste better in Italy. After dinner, she folded the blanket and plates back into the basket and left them by the path to the house. She kissed him again, for a few moments, just enjoying the easy evening together. After they broke apart, she twined her fingers with his and lead him to the horses. He helped her mount, and they rode along the beach, salt splashing up from the horse's hooves.

Adelaide laughed, urging her horse onward to race him a little. Though Hugh was easily able to overtake her, she loved the sound of his laughter as they rode. After about a half hour of moving along the beach, they stopped at a sandy strip with a small stone grotto attached. They tethered the horses and Adelaide jumped into his arms again, laughing gleefully as Hugh swung her around before kissing her deeply. Once her toes touched the sand again, she hummed happily and looked out onto the ocean, feeling a little nervous.

"A-are you sure you don't mind giving me swimming lessons, my love? I don't want to make you work while you're supposed to be relaxing..."
~

Fausta laughed joyfully as Duncan twirled her around, and lead her to the table. She sat and shared a salad with him. His hot, honeyed words melted her heart and she couldn't help the girlish giggle that escaped her lips. He looked so dashing in the candlelight, she felt her heart flutter. Swallowing, she smiled.

"My love, I am to be thanking you for coming! To know you now has been being a joy of my life." The music set the mood perfectly, and the next course came out, a lovely fresh fish dinner, seasoned perfectly. About halfway through the course, Fausta couldn't hold in her excitement any longer. Once he'd taken a break to drink wine, she leaned forward and kissed him, tasting the sweet liquid on his lips. Pulling away, she caught Duncan's eyes with her own, a soft smile appearing on her features. Slowly, she reached down into her bodice and drew out the black velvet pouch from her chest.

Gently, Fausta took his hand and uncurled it, placing the warm fabric upon his palm. "Here is my gift, amore, yes? I could wait no longer for you to see it." She withdrew from his, her eyes shining as she picked her fork back up and took another bite, teasing him terribly with every movement as she waited for his reaction.

They ate and chatted companionably, and when their bellies were full they took to riding. After a while they found a private stretch of beach and Hugh thought it a fine place to have his first dip of the vacation. He helped Adelaide off her horse and once their feet were on the sand she turned to him, Hugh could hear the self doubt in her voice and shook his head kindly. He turned to face her, their bodies inches apart and reached to cup the back of her neck.

"This is not work." Hugh said softly. Their was a gruff tone to his voice and it was clear there was no place he would rather be. "Sweet Adelaide, you are pure pleasure." His lips descended on hers for a moment before he pulled away. There was a light in his eyes, that was not so far off from Duncan's when the man was scheming. He stepped back then and pulled his shirt over his head, and quickly removed his trousers as well until he stood before her bare. "It would not do to ride back with wet clothes." He said grinning, moving forward to help her with her own clothes. He placed the pile of cloth over a large stone that sat nestled in the sand and moved to Adelaide, his hand wrapped around hers and together they began to make their way into the water. It was cool against their legs and Hugh shivered lightly at the change in temperature.

"Everyone says that its best to just immerse yourself fully right away, but I find I next have the gumption to do it that way." Hugh chuckled and then let a low hiss out when the water reached his waist. He stopped once the water reached partway up Adelaide's chest. "First lesson is complete! You are in the water." He told her gaily. His arms moving to wrap around her and hold her to him. He enjoyed the warmth the two of them shared, despite the cool waters.

"Next lesson is to float." He told her as he nuzzled her neck, biting softly where the soft skin of her neck met her shoulder.

~

Duncan watched as Fausta reached into her bodice and his brows lifted, when she pulled a pouch out he laughed knowing that was certainly the last thing he expected. She placed the pouch in his hand and held his gaze, so much passed beneath her eyes and Duncan found his breath hitching with the silent pleasurable torture she inflicted. The object in his hand shifted and finally he tore his gaze away from her look down at it. His fingers found the draw string and he pulled apart the bag and let a small locket fall into his hands. He noted the graceful figure carved into the white stone, his thumb moved to trace the shape of it and he found the clasp and pressed it. The locket opened and his eyes widened at the strands of hair inside. Not wanting to loose them he closed the locket right away and looked up at Fausta, lifting the gold chain around his neck and letting the pendant rest over his heart. For once Duncan found himself speechless, his hand rested over the cool metal and it warmed under his touch.

"Thank you." He said softly, reaching out to grip her chin and pull her to him for a fierce kiss. They pulled away from each other when the server came by to fill up their wine glasses once more. "This will never leave my side." He told Fausta, he didn't know why, but the small trinket filled him with such emotion. The song from the violin changed and Duncan perked up by the sudden change. He lifted to his feet and pulled Fausta up. "Dance with me love."

Adelaide was comforted by Hugh's gentle reassurances, then gasped and blushed as he stripped down before her. She couldn't help but to laugh and look away nervously, her shyness getting the better of her in the open space. He grinned impishly and came forward to undress her, and she was terribly flustered. Hidden away in the bedroom was one thing, but to be so flagrant outside? It was a private beach, but still.

"I'm beginning to suspect an ulterior motive, darling." She teased lightly, once she regained her senses somewhat. Hugh's skilled hands needed almost no help, but Adelaide stripped off the last of her clothing by herself. His large hand wrapped around hers and excitedly pulled her towards the water. She shrieked a little as the cold ocean hit her skin, but her lover's persistence moved her forward, until they stood nearly chest high in the frigid, lapping waves. Thankfully, Hugh enveloped her in his warm, strong embrace and Adelaide could feel her nerves ease a little. His body pressed so close to hers was a great comfort, and she blushed scarlet as other thoughts intruded upon the quiet moment. Hugh praised her gently and Adelaide wound her arms around his neck, squeezing a little in thanks. Hugh was alive now with such joyus energy, Adelaide was delighted.

Hugh teased her terribly with his affections, and Adelaide let out a soft moan in response. "Angel," She breathed "Are we going to swim or make love? You're confusing me terribly." She teased. When Hugh lifted his head again Adelaide made to kiss him, but a particularly large wave rolled through them, and the motion made her yelp quietly, clinging to his neck.
~

Fausta was thrilled with his response to her gift--it had seemed so small in comparison to his beautifully planned evening, but Duncan was awed by it. She made a mental note to thank Hugh again later. "Just as I, dearest Duncan, shall never be parted from you." She responded softly. The music lifted and Duncan stood before her, asking for a dance. Fausta laughed, nodding happily.

"Are you needing to be asking, amore?" She quipped, taking his hand. He settled his other comfortably on the dip in her waist, and Fausta placed hers on his shoulder. The began to move, fluidly, into a lively tango like dance. Her skirts swished gently round their ankles. It was as if their bodies communicated by themselves--for several beats there was only silence between them as they danced. Duncan twirled her out and back against his chest and Fausta pressed a kiss to his cheek, leaving a red stain there. She giggled as they resumed, humming happily along with the music.

"I have been aching to dance with you again, amore." She told him as the music faded back into a lovely waltzing tune. They swayed together in the cool night air, but the heat between them warded off any child the wind brought with it. "I was wondering how different it would be to dance with you now." He dipped her at that moment, and she laughed again, alight with joy. The pendant dangled down in the air between them, catching the candlelight and glittering beautifully. She sighed as they returned again, moving closer still. His hand lay on the small of her back, now, and hers wrapped around his neck. With her lips only a hair away from his ear, she spoke softly.

"<I can feel your passion now in every move, love. I can feel that it is only for me, now. Can you feel how I am different, too?>"

She was a mixture of desire and hesitation, and Hugh found the combination intoxicating, the sweet woman in his arms was still just that, a lady despite all the barriers between them removed. She settled happily in his arms and he enjoyed the way her arms wound around his neck, holding them close together. She was moving closer and Hugh was about to meet her for a kiss when the wave hit sending him stumbling to regain his footing. He let out a laugh as the wave finished the job of drenching them and he held tight to the small woman in his arms. Another wave made to roll through them and he jumped with it, and softly hit the sandy bottom on stead feet.

"It seems the waves wish for you to learn first. Lovemaking after." He chuckled moving his hands down to squeeze gently at her thighs. He talked her through the process, gently coaxing her to let go while he still held her. "I wont let go." He promised her as he slowly moved her so that she was on her back in the water, Adelaide's hair fanned out as her head was dipped in and he held his hands under her back and legs. He showed her how to properly move her hands to help keep her afloat and praised as she completed all of his tasks.

"Well done." He said proudly, keeping her floating. "It is quite the view." He said meaning the stars above them but never taking his eyes off of her. "Would you like to try without my assistance?" He asked.

~

"It has certainly been too long." Duncan agreed when Fausta spoke of their dancing. They moved together, both skilled in the art, swaying and dipping. Moving as one as the violin switched to a slower waltz, they came together and held tight. Fausta's breath moved over his ear and he shivered at the sultry Italian. He growled a little and moved to press a kiss along her jaw.

"<Everything I am, it is for you Fausta I see clearly it is the same for you.>" He breathed, the two of them swayed in silence for a while more. Finally the song ended just as dessert was being delivered and Duncan pulled his lover back to the table for them both to share a piece of chocolate cake with decadent frosting. Feeling mischievous he put his finger in the sweet frosting and touched Fausta's nose leaving a dark smudge. He laughed and stuck his finger in his mouth to get the rest off.

"What a sight you are! In that dress we first met, under the stars, looking just as delicious as this cake my love."

Hugh secured her to his own body and held fast through the short assault the waves threw at them. When the water calmed a little, they were drenched and clutching each other, Hugh laughing without restraint. Almost like a child. Adelaide smiled happily. Braving the sea like this was all worth it for the sound of that laugh alone. Patiently, he walked her through floating and the basic movements of swimming, though made sure to anchor her. It didn't seem terribly difficult, and the star filled sky was reflected in his eyes just beautifully as he gazed at her. He commented on the view and Adelaide blushed, laughing dryly and splashing him a little in retaliation.

"I bet it is for you." She teased "Though mine isn't so bad either..." Hugh asked about trying to swim on her own, and Adelaide felt fear tighten over her heart again. She straightened up again and came close to him, finding safety in his embrace. "N-no, Angel...I think I've had quite enough of a lesson for today. Maybe I can try a pond or a lake instead--I'm afraid the ocean still scares me a little." Suddenly, there was the muffled sound of hoofbeats on sand, and a servant holding a lantern appeared before them. Adelaide made a little yelp and hid into Hugh's chest, her face burning with embarrassment.

"It's getting late, sir, ma'am." He called out from his horse once he spotted them. "The main house is calling so you don't catch cold." he waited, eyes averted, as they waded out of the water and dressed, then lead them back to the villa. The couple separated briefly to bathe, and soon enough Adelaide was sitting on their bed in a nightgown, braiding her damp hair and awaiting Hugh's arrival. She kept looking from the door to the large covered canvas, wondering what he would think of her gift.
~

Fausta thoroughly enjoyed teasing him so, finding Duncan's reaction just so wonderfully wanting. The music finally came to a close and they sat again, just in time to enjoy a beautifully crafted slice of cake together. Duncan playfully smudged a little on her nose, and she couldn't help but laugh. His comment made her smile even more. She dipped her head in thanks and replied.

"Grazie, amore. It is lovely to see you appreciate all my hard work into looking good." Getting an idea, Fausta took a fingerful of frosting and planted it on her lips, quickly grabbing Duncan's chin and peppering sugary kisses all over his face. When she finished, Fausta sat back and laughed, wiping her lips on her napkin. "Now you are the one looking sweet, no?" She giggled. He made her feel so...free. Like when she was a child, unaware of anything outside of the villa. Laughing in the candlelight, under the moon, Fausta sighed.

"I love you, my dearest, dearest Duncan."

Before Hugh could act on impulse he found a voice interrupted them and he turned to catch sign of a Ricci servant. He ginned as Adelaide hid safely in his arms for the moment and brushed a hand down her spine. When it was decided that they should return, he walked with Adelaide and the two of them got dressed. He did his best to allow Adelaide some privacy and kept between her and the servant. They took the trek back in silence, Adelaide still a deep scarlet from their interruption. However Hugh found he was not overly bothered.

Once back the the mansion, the servant took their horses and they thanked him before heading off to their baths. Hugh sat in the warmed waters of the tub and soaped the salty ocean water out of his hair. He could still taste the waters on his mouth and smiled at the memory of Adelaide floating in the waters. She was pure magic that woman, and he spell over him grew stronger every day. In the distance he heard the rich laughter from Rocco as he and Bria got ready for bed. Hugh found himself wondering if Duncan would laugh like him years down the road with Fausta. He could the couple being rather busy with all the little babes they would bring into the world. The idea of being an uncle made him smile and he wondered if his nieces and nephews would enjoys the stories he told. As he rinsed his thoughts travelled the Adelaide, and the thought of her being a mother. She would be a loving one certainly. He dare not think further on the matter though, as he could not bear to think of another man who made her happy.

He left the waters of the tub and used the towel to dry himself, choosing to wear a thin housecoat that stopped midway to his calf. He tied the sash around his waist and thanked the servants who had prepared the bath for him. He wandered up to their tower bedroom and opened the door, finding Adelaide on their bed running her fingers skilfully through her hair to make a braid. He warmed at the sight of her and shut the door behind him. He spotted his gift for her on the floor near his nightstand and was about to go and pick it up when he noticed the rather large covered item that Adelaide's eyes flicked to.

"Another surprise?" He asked her. At her nod he moved towards it and gently lifted the cover off, revealing the painting of the lovers in the gardens. Hugh took in the details of the painting, leaning in close to see the brush strokes over the fabric of the woman's dress. "This is beautiful." He said stepping back. She had joined him from her place on the bed and he took her into his arms. "How wonderfully romantic." He said smiling into her hair as he nuzzled her. "Here I was hoping to spoil you, but sweet Adelaide you have gone and romanced me in ever sense of the word. Thank you." He kissed her softly then, letting the quiet of the night wash over them.

"I have a gift for you as well." He told her. Drawing away to grab the wrapped up books and bring them back to her.

~

She returned the favour of the frosting tenfold and Duncan chuckled as he lifted his hand to brush some of the frosting off his cheek. His licked his hand and sighed happily. She laughed at him and looked dreamily as she told him she loved him. Duncan grinned brightly at her and leaned forward to kiss her once, and then twice.

"I love you. Fausta, my moon, my stars, my sun."

They finished their meals and cleaned the frosting off one another with soft kisses and laughter. The owner thanked them for their time and the couple left the restaurant with full bellies and light hearts. They made their way back to the carriage and settled comfortably in each others arms. The soft swaying of the carriage and the rhythmic clopping of the horses hooves lulling Duncan's eyes closed.

"I wonder how Adelaide has done? I forgot to tell you, but I used my won favour from her today. Told her to sweet Hugh off his feet." He chuckled and moved his thumb over Fausta's palm. He regarded the lines of her hand and then lifted it to his mouth for a quick bite and a soft kiss. When they reached the Ricci mansion Duncan opened the carriage door and helped Fausta out. They said their good-nights to the driver and walked inside the quiet manor. Candles burned low and not a soul was in sight. Finding the place quite comforting Duncan turned to Fausta.

"Show me your favourite place in this home. Where did young Fausta find herself most days?"

Hugh entered the room looking rejuvenated and smelling of the fine bath salts and perfumes that the villa had offered. He found his way to her gift and unveiled it. He examined the painting and she came to stand beside him, laughing gleefully as he swept her up into his arms. They met in a soft kiss, the gentle ocean breeze flowing in from the open doors to the balcony, the sheer curtains moving like the waves outside. When they broke apart, Adelaide responded

"My angel, I am so glad you hear that. You deserve nothing but the most romantic evening I can give." Hugh pulled away and returned with his own parcel, a little bigger than a bread loaf and tied neatly in brown paper. Adelaide smiled cheerfully and took his hand, sitting down upon the nearby chaise. She released his hand and focused on the package in her lap. Carefully, she untied the little twine knot and slipped the leather bound journal from its place. Discarding the paper, she gave him a curious look before opening it. A sharp gasp escaped her lips after a moment, and she began to flip through the book's pages rapidly.

Adelaide stood and paced, her eyes glued to the pages as she moved. Suddenly, she stopped and turned to her lover. Her hands were shaking, and tears began to fall gently from her eyes. "H-Hugh..." She stuttered out, disbelieving "I-is this...are these...the Madonna's notes, on these pages?" She came back to the chaise, clutching the book to her chest. Adelaide began to sob in earnest, overwhelmed with the emotions from her heart. It was as if God himself had handed her his own personal Bible. She covered her mouth with one hand to muffle the noises coming from her throat.

The ride back was peaceful, and she could feel him begin to drift off to sleep. The arrived home, and despite his tired eyes, Duncan asked her to show him her favorite place. Taking his hand, she absently kissed his knuckles while she thought. There were many places in the manor that she loved. Finally, the answer struck her and she laughed. Taking off her shoes and discarding her clutch and shawl by the door, Fausta tugged Duncan along several different corridors, giggling like a child. They ascended three flights of stairs and arrived at the greenhouse--a glass dome atop one of the villa's towers. Fausta released his hand and opened the door, looking over her shoulder with an excited smile.

They wound their way through the strange plants--some seemed to grip and grab at their clothing almost playfully. Finally, she stopped along a wall lined with wooden shelves, all filled with gardening equipment. Fausta began to browse the tools, muttering to herself in Italian.

"<Now, which one was it, again? Not green, not blue....ah! Grey, of course. How could I forget?>" Fausat grabbed the grey handle of a trowel on the third shelf, and looked back at Duncan, who was almost being eaten by a rose plant. She laughed and pulled, the wall swinging open with a loud groan. Fausta helped Duncan free himself from the leaves and kissed him on the cheek. "You wanted to know where I was, yes? This, here, is where I stayed often. Come!" She lead him into the darkened room, and the wall closed behind them again. By memory, she opened the windows in the small space, flooding it with silver light.

It was a small room, but comfortably furnished and decorated with the portraits of many, many people. A single bookshelf stood in the corner, stuffed to the brim with occult volumes from around the world. Upon a small table in the center of the room was a table holding a crystal ball and several decks of tarot cards, all in different styles. The room was clean and seemed frequently used--there was a bowl of fresh fruit by one window, and a jog of water and glasses upon another. With the added light, Fausta was able to light the candles that littered the room and open the windows in ernest, letting the cool sea breeze flow in. She settled on a velvet chair and smiled, waiving her arms grandly. "This is where I would spend many days."

Adelaide took her time opening his gift and Hugh shifted uncomfortably from foot to foot, hoping that she would like it. He had no doubt in Fausta's ability but in the moment before she saw it he could feel his own fears taking over him. At her gasp and quickened movements to see the contents of the pages Hugh moved closer, crouching down in front of her. Her eyes were brimming with tears and Hugh felt a soft pang as her voice rang out through the room.

"Y-yes they are. Are you-" He was cut off from his question as Adelaide shoulders began to shake and her crying turned into sobs. "Oh lord. A-Adelaide!" Hugh said panicked. "I'm so sorry, I can return them, I'm so sorry you hate them." He shifted to his knees in front of her and reached out hoping to soothe away the hurt he had caused. He swore lightly and shook his head. "Forgive me, I clearly was not thinking." Shame coloured his cheeks a soft pink and in his haste to comfort her his hair came loose around his neck and fell in front of his eyes. He impatiently swiped away at the strands and moved to gather Adelaide in his arms.

Duncan followed Fausta eagerly through the house and felt even more lost with the winding corridors and steep steps. until finally they were on the top of a tower, inside a humid greenhouse. Duncan could practically feel his hair beginning to frizz and patted at the locks as he went with Fausta through the foliage. They reached the end of the greenhouse and Duncan stood back as Fausta muttered to herself in Italian. There were still moments where he couldn't quite catch what she was saying and he blinked trying to understand what she was saying. He didn't notice at first the creeping leaves moving around him until one moved over his line of vision. His attention was drawn away then by a loud groan from the wall and he watched as a secret room was revealed.

"Oh my." He said surprised. Fausta came to him then and helped him out of his predicament with the foliage. She kissed him and began to explain that this was a place she came often as a child. She moved through the room with the ease of someone who had built a routine. The windows opened and he took in the room. He knew immediately what the room was based on the contents of the table and lifted a brow. Once the candles were lit and the room was basked in a soft glow, Fausta sat in a velvet chair and Duncan thought she looked powerful, so he told her that.

"You look like a sorceress, one that all the kings come to with their problems." Duncan sat across from her at the table and peered over the crystal ball at her. "Oh great and powerful enchantress, my crops are dying, please make it rain." He grinned as he spoke. The candle light flickered and it reflected in the crystal ball, his eyes moved to the motion and for the briefest of moments he could have sworn he saw a couple dancing. But the image was gone before he could focus on it.

"So you take part in the mystical arts then dearest? I saw such a woman today in the market. Read the cards for Adelaide and I." He looked at the cards then, all face up and he took in the intricate artwork on the paper.

Adelaide shook her head violently, clutching the book to her chest with a white knuckled grip. She pulled away from him and cried out "No! Angel, I-- I love it! I am so, so--so grateful. Thank you, thank you! Oh--" Words failed her as another wave of intense joy overtook her. Frustrated that she could not speak, Adelaide released one arm from the book at her chest and slid her hand into his hair. Gathering up the soft, damp strands in her fingers, she pulled his head back lightly and leaned down to meet him.

She kissed him passionately, trying to convey the absolute, wordless wonderful feeling that swelled inside of her. Hugh's gift was beyond thoughtful--never in all her life would she have uttered such an intimate wish of hers out loud. To have the notes of such a star as the Madonna in her hands, to read and learn from... It was a dream come true. How she could sing for him now, with this new knowledge. Maybe the music could help her ease his heart further. After many heated moments, Adelaide placed the book down on the chaise beside her and pulled away, sinking to her knees upon the floor before him. Hugh's arms came around her again, holding her tightly.

She wrapped her own arms around his neck, her fingers gliding through his hair. Adelaide rested her forehead against his, her tears finally beginning to dry. She kissed his lips softly again, then each cheek, then his nose. "Do you understand, now Hugh? I'm so sorry I frightened you. Your gift...it's perfect." She met his eyes and smiled brightly, swallowing back the words that she knew he did not wish to hear. I love you. Together, pressed chest to chest with the sound of the ocean behind them... she did not wish to bitter this moment for him. "How can I ever thank you, Angel?"

Adelaide whispered earnestly, searching his blue, blue eyes.

Fausta laughed heartily at his jest, grinning lazily at him in the low light. She shook her head and held out her hand, beckoning him closer. Once he obliged, she moved and in a fluid motion had him seated in the chair, as she sat upon his lap, one arm wrapped around his shoulders. "No, Amore," She said "It is being my mother who is entwined with the occult. Her family is a long line of witches, I'm told." She kissed his neck, teasingly scraping her teeth along the exposed skin between his ear and his collar.

"I did not inherit her gifts, much as I once tried." She shrugged, lifting her head and looking about the mysterious, slightly maccob space. "But I spent many hours here with my mother, watching her work or study. It was a place for just the two of us--no boys allowed in the witch's lair, yes?" She laughed a little. Gesturing with a dip of her head to the far window, Fausta continued. "You can see much of the coast from there. I used to wait and watch for my father's ship to come in when he was away." Fausta smiled, tenderly kissing behind Duncan's ear and nuzzling his cheek. This dark little room brought her comfort, in a strange way. It was the one place she could go without her brothers knowing. Her little escape. She raised an arm and gestured to the many portraits that lined the walls, all the way up to the spire's ceiling. All of women, all of whom resembed Fausta and her mother in some way.

"These are the Ricci witches, amore. My mother often consults them for guidance." The eyes seemed to be watching them, almost following her movements. "Sometimes for something small, a medicine or charm." Gooseflesh prickled up on her skin. "Sometimes for other things. I was never being allowed her when mother held her seances. But the villa was always cold on those nights."
