Alex noticed that Nate put his free arm down in front of him. He appreciated it, and his eyes went to study the man who'd been holding him. He had thick blonde hair, bright blue eyes and wore relatively nice looking clothes considering the shape his own were in. He wasn't sure just what this man would want. Did they need supplies, did they want to hurt them? Alex jumped a little when he heard the second voice, his head turning to the side to see another man show up. Alex hadn't even heard this man and that didn't help him feel any better about being here. Alex noticed the second man, and he was in awe at how clean he looked, and silently thought that he was definitely good looking, some might say downright handsome. He wouldn't argue that point. But he had Nate, that was all he needed.

"Why yes I did." Kaleb said with a smile. "I guess I could share with you. This is Nate and Alex" He said, gesturing first to Nate then to Alex. Kaleb then turned his attention back to Nate. "You two have no idea what's in this city do you? We've been here a few days and have made it this far" Kaleb told them. "What direction are you headed in?" He asked. If these two were heading through the city, then perhaps the four of them could make through easier together.

Nate turned his attention back on Kaleb with mild hesitation. The sudden appearance of two people was strange but reasonable. This was not the first time he ran into a different set of people. Nervously, he raised his knife hand to push up his glasses that were not exactly handling the whiplash of head turns well. He should have let Alex come up with a way to keep them on his head more. “Um.” He took a moment to wrap his head around what was going on so that he could sound like a competent traveler. He was. He was good at this. This was his element. His mama taught him well. “No, we don’t. We just arrived in the city late last night. We’re moving west towards Washington.” He considered the two new companions. This was a good opportunity. He could not pass up this opportunity. Wasn’t this exactly what he was just saying he would prefer? “Would you care to join us?”

Carlos clapped his hands once before sliding past the crew and into the room as though he had no fear at all. That was because he didn’t. His hand rested on Kaleb’s arm as he twisted around to look at the two new people better. “Good job, Kaleb. You caught us some beauties.” He eyed them both, lingering on the slightly taller one. Muscular. Carlos loved muscle. He raised a hand and waved a finger towards him before twisting around and heading into the room proper. “Love, did you already check in here? I got distracted by the extreme dead people a couple of rooms down.“ He pulled open a drawer before looking up and pointed towards Nate and Alex. “Mind the walls, won’t you? They like to come out and play.” He grinned that crooked little smile of his and rifled through the drawer.

Alex looked at Nate before he looked over at Kaleb and the other man. Alex shook his head when he heard Kaleb ask if they knew what was in this city. That statement right there definitely did not help Alex calm down, in fact it was doing the opposite as he pressed a little closer to Nate. Wait, did Nate just ask if they wanted to join them. What was he thinking? "Yes, it would be a good idea for you to join us, if this city is that bad" Alex said, a smile on his face. What? Did he seriously agree to this? Oh well, he's dealt with worse. "Wait, the walls come out and play?" Alex said curiously, moving from Nate's side to venture into the room, his eyes looking at the walls.

Kaleb rolled his eyes at Carlos with a smile as the man slid into the room. He looked at him when Carlos put a hand on his arm. Kaleb was used to the man and how he was. "I tried." He told the other man before turning to the other two. "To answer your question, Carlos and I would love to join you. Strength in numbers as they say" Kaleb said, turning to look at Carlos when he talked to him. "I haven't yet checked in here love, I found these two before I could, or should I say they found me?" He chuckled, stepping into the room himself. "Well good to know we don't have to worry about that room." He added.

This was a good plan. Strength in numbers. Yes, exactly. That was exactly what he was thinking. Four heads and eight hands were better in the long run. And if they were heading in the same direction, then it would be so much easier. Besides, he missed the company of extra people. He may have traveled with only his mama a lot, but he missed his brothers. For most of his life he was part of a small group. As the two men stepped away, Nate turned to Alex. “Are you okay with this?” He asked quietly though not a whisper so as not to seem like he wasn’t sharing something even though that was kind of what it was. “I should have asked you before suggesting that. I just…” miss everyone. “I think it’s a good idea.”

“That would be because it is.” Carlos rounded a corner as he tossed several different supplies up with one hand, caught them with the other, and stuffed it into his backpack. “We are the best idea that you’ve ever had.” He pointed between him and Kaleb with a mischievous grin. He leapt to Kaleb’s side, both hands grabbing at one of his arms as he leaned behind him to look at something. “Hmm, yeah, that’s what I thought.” He leaned back up and patted his favorite person. “Dearest, I think I know where our shuffling buddy ran off to. Be right back, okay?” He bounded towards the door, dripping in confidence, before stopped looking at the two new ones and asked, “Don’t die while I’m gone, okay? I would hate to lose someone so handsome so soon.” He winked at Alex then disappeared into the hall.

Alex looked at Nate with a smile. "I'm okay with it, it's a good idea" Alex nodded. He had to agree with Kaleb that strength in numbers was a good thing. The more heads, eyes and hands to deal with things, the better. He had to admit as well that the two intrigued him for sure. Alex watched how those two interacted with each other and it was definitely fascinating. Wait, did he say shuffling buddy, Alex listened but he didn't hear anything. Hmm. Then his attention snapped to Carlos, a blush crossing his face at the compliment and wink.

Kaleb laughed a little at Carlos, his eyes watching the man as he watched him toss different supplies in the air before catching them and stuffing them in his pack. "I hate to agree with him, but its definitely a better idea for us to stick together" He said. Kaleb felt Carlos put his hands on Kaleb's arm and looked at him. "Alright, be safe there love." He told the man who basically bounded towards the door. Carlos' confidence was definitely something he admired in the man. And there was the flirty comments. Kaleb shook his head at that with a grin before watching him disappear down the hall. "When he gets back, we can carry on. We've been scouting for a way to the next building." Kaleb told them.

Nate slipped his hand into Alex’s without thinking. Well, he was thinking. He was thinking very much that as kind and fascinating as these two were, there was also something just a little off putting. It may have been the fact that they both accepted them so quickly, though that would be a bit hypocritical of him since he too was quick to accepting others. It may have been the way that they spoke and moved which insinuated one kind of relationship, but now with the comments and additional actions, Nate was not so sure. That was probably the real reason. The uncertainty.

“Does he usually run off by himself to handle… shuffling things?” Nate was not sure what a shuffling buddy was, but he had a feeling it must have been some kind of infected. It was probably the infected that they saw signs of on their way through the floor. And he was going to attempt to handle that on his own? “Oh, I know how to get to the other building. I saw it on our way up here. I couldn’t see what floor, but there’s a side of windows that look like they can reach pretty easily. May have been balconies or may have simply been through the windows. I take it that you’ve checked this floor then?” His eyes flicked to Alex’s leg. If they had to go up another, that would probably be fine.

Alex felt Nate’s hand slip into his and he sent a smile towards him. Alex had to admit that the kind faces were very much welcome after the hunters they’d encountered before. He squeezed Nate’s hand reassuringly before turning to look at Kaleb. Alex tested his leg while they were standing there as he listened to Nate explain that they had found a way through to the other building. He could handle another fleet of stairs, and he would handle it if he needed to. He saw Kaleb’s gaze flick to his leg and Alex looked away.

Kaleb set his gaze onto Nate. “Yeah, he tends to do just that. He’s something else.” Kaleb said, answering Nate’s question. He studied the two before him, his eyes catching on Alex who seemed to be testing one of his legs. Interesting. Kaleb could see the wrapping through the holes in the pant leg. His attention went back to Nate when he spoke. “Excellent. We haven’t seen anything on this floor, so we’ll have to head up to the third floor.” Kaleb said. “Will you be able to make it?” He asked Alex who nodded. “I’ll be fine.” Alex assured him.

Nate nodded, agreeing despite the fact that he had only known these people for a couple of minutes. It already made sense that Carlos was that kind of person. He was going to say something about that when he heard the explosion before he felt it. He turned to the door, taking a step towards it, fearing the worst. “Should we-“ And then another one resounded. He took another anxious step out until he was halfway out the door. Seeing nothing he looked back at Kaleb with wide eyes. “Is he-“ But his words were cut off by the sound of laughter ringing through the hall just before the crash of feet. He turned around to face the hall once more in time to see Carlos slowing now, the biggest grin captured on his face.

“Oh good, you’re still here. Did I miss anything while I was away?” He slipped past Nate into the room, eyes lingering on Alex as he moved. “Handsome,” he nodded towards him before skipping onward, hands colliding with Kaleb to slow himself. “He was a big, nasty fella let me tell you. I’m shocked we missed him the first time. No worries! I took care of him.” He draped an arm across Kaleb’s shoulder. “So, the plan?”

“Is to go to the third floor,” Nate answered to catch Carlos up. He was still reeling from the fact that Carlos ran off to take care of a big, nasty fella on his own and seemed to not even be phased. “I think I saw where some of the windows connected.”

Alex heard the explosion, head moving in that direction as he felt it a moment later. Alex felt himself freeze as he watched Nate move to the door. Another one came around and Alex wasn’t entirely sure what was going on. Then Alex heard laughter and footsteps headed their way. That man was crazy. Alex then heard Carlos’ voice and saw him slipping into the room. Alex blushed at the compliment, looking away with a shy smile. He wasn’t used to being called that, nor was he even aware it could be considered flirting.

Kaleb shook his head at the explosions, looking at Nate. “He’s fine, this is pretty standard, must’ve been a more advanced infected.” Kaleb said, waving off Nate’s concern. A few moments later, he heard that laughter and smiled himself. Yep. That was Carlos. He watched him slip into the room, hands placed on Kaleb to slow himself. He looked at Carlos with a smile when the man threw an arm over Kaleb’s shoulder. “Glad you got him alright dear.” Kaleb told Carlos, before turning to the other two. “Alright. Third floor it is.” Kaleb clapped his hands. “After you two?” He said, letting them move first. Alex started out the door, his limp a little more obvious due to standing around. He kept his hand in Nate’s as he walked out into the hallway.

Nate walked at Alex’s speed, moving them out into the hallway and back towards the stairs. Thankfully, they were not too far. He was worried that the more they stood around, the worse Alex’s leg was going to be. With the addition of another flight of stairs, this could go poorly for him, and he was not sure what he was going to do about it. He, apparently, needn’t have worried. They made it to the stairwell where he paused a moment to check on Alex before Carlos swooped in with only a, “I’m going to borrow him if you don’t mind,” as a warning, and scooped Alex into his arms without any trouble at all. Nate had enough time to look their direction and feel his arm begin to move before the hand he clasped disappear from his.

“That’s not-“

“Don’t worry about it!” Carlos called as he practically jogged up the stairs as though the addition of an Alex was not at all cumbersome. “Hun, could you be a dear and open this door up here for me.” He looked down at Alex with a more than friendly smile. “My hands are a bit… indisposed at the moment.” He let that smile settle into his eyes as he looked at him for a little longer than your average stranger. Now that he had Alex in his arms, he was far more aware of several facts. “You have absolutely stunning arms,” he commented, eyes washing over them. Beautiful muscles both in sight and feel.

Nate frowned and followed them up the steps, unsure what to make of this helpful display. “I got it,” he quickly stated, rushing passed them and opening the door. He was grateful for the help. He really was. He appreciated anything someone could do to help Alex. He did. He certainly did. Why wouldn’t he?

Alex walked beside Nate, hand in his. He appreciated that Nate walked at his speed, smile on his face. He was still limping along not exactly looking forward to climbing up the next set of stairs. He could hear the two behind him as they got to the stairwell. Alex paused when Nate did before he heard Carlos coming up behind him. Borrow him? Alex let out a small gasp when Carlos scooped Alex into his arms. His arm immediately went around Carlos’ neck as a stability when his hand left Nate’s.

“Well hello..” Alex said with a small laugh. He wasn’t not expecting to be picked up, but he wasn’t going to complain. If he didn’t have to walk the stairs with his leg, he was grateful for that. Alex looked up at Carlos when they made it to the next floor and that smile. Alex blushed at the compliment about his arms. “T- Thanks.” He said softly.

Kaleb couldn’t help but chuckle at Carlos when he picked up Alex in his arms. He followed them up the stairs and went to get the door but Nate beat him to it. Kaleb entered the hall first, eyes looking around. “Clear so far” he told the others, stepping further so they could come in.

Carlos let out a small laugh too as he waited for the others to get the door and check the hall. He was faster, because he liked to be fast. He was strong because he liked to be strong. He may have wanted to stop all this fighting and survivalism, but he did like to feel like he was great at things. It fed his ever growing ego. Scooping an exquisitely attractive man who clearly needed help up the stairs? That was exactly the kind of thing he would like to do. “And you have the cutest red cheeks. I could get used to having you around.” He was just about to ask about the scars when he was rudely interrupted.

“Hey,” Nate called. “It’s clear.” In case Carlos was too busy flirting to hear. Nate chose to believe that he was just that kind of guy. He was a physically affectionate kind of man. Fun loving. Probably crazy. But really, who wasn’t in this world? He reminded him of Ben, and that was nice. Though, he would appreciate if they could move along now. He turned his attention to Alex. “Can you walk?” It was a question for both him and his new pair of legs. “Because I think that the window should be on this end of the building somewhere.”

Alex wasn’t sure how to quite handle all the attention he was getting. But he definitely didn’t mind it. It was different, it was crazy and it was drawing him in. Alex blushed harder at the comment about his cheeks. “R- Really?” He hadn’t expected to hear that Carlos would want him around at all. Alex turned his head to look at Nate when he said was clear and if he could walk. Alex could, but he felt bad that he was so much slower with his limp. He didn’t want to have to burden Carlos with carrying him more. “I think I’ll be fine.” Alex said.

Kaleb had paused, looking behind him as he waited for them. He heard Nate say that the windows should be on this end of the building which made him feel better, the quicker they got through the city, the less chances they’d have to be found by the group here. A group that loved hunting survivors that entered the city.

“Oh yes,” Carlos answered with a chuckle. He finally pulled his gaze up to Nate with that same smile. Nate had to admit he was charming. That did not make him any less annoyed by the time they were taking to stand around doing nothing. Carlos took in Nate for a moment before gently putting Alex on the ground. Keeping his arm around him until he was sure that his feet were firmly on the ground. He moved forward now, nearly jogging a moment before looking over his shoulder and wiggling his fingers in a wave before running to catch up with Kaleb.

Nate let out a breath, slipped his hand into Alex’s once more, and moved forward at his pace. Their new companions certainly were something. He did appreciate the enthusiasm. He liked the playful and whimsical nature. He felt like he could also get used to having them around. It was going to be interesting to learn more about them. “Are you okay?” He asked Alex as they walked. “I didn’t mean for this to be a lot all of a sudden. Thought this was the only way. I guess it could be worse.”

Alex smiled shyly at Carlos before the man gently set him down, an arm around him as Alex got his balance back. “Thanks.” He said softly. He watched Carlos head towards Kaleb before he looked back and waved his fingers at Alex. Alex blushed, waved a little before looking at Nate. He felt Nate take his hand again and they walked at Alex’s pace. Alex looked at Nate and nodded. “I’m okay. They aren’t that bad. It’s not too much.” Alex told him with a smile.

Kaleb looked back as Carlos came up beside him. “Really? You trying to make me jealous hun?” Kaleb asked with a laugh. He knew that wasn’t the case and he didn’t really care. He was used to Carlos and his ways. He stopped at the first door, opening it cautiously listening. Hearing nothing, Kaleb took a step in, surveying it and looking for supplies. “Clear in here but not windows to the next building.” He said.

Nate smiled at him as they followed along a little slower. “Maybe we can let them do all the hard work,” he joked. They did seem happy to commit to the scouting roles. “Do you feel better about being here. I know cities aren’t your thing. But if we have two more people, is that better? I know you didn’t want a group, but this is small. And they’re a lot more like us than those hunters.”

Carlos laughed as he caught up to Kaleb and stepped into a different room just to pop back out. “My love, nothing could ever make you jealous.” He hooked his arm through Kaleb’s and planted a kiss to his cheek, a common thing for Carlos to do. “Besides, have you seen his arms.” He hummed to himself before shaking his head and pulling away to run to the next room. “They’re a good find, hun!” He checked the window. Nope not this one though… he leaned over to inspect the outside. Could be? He dashed out of the room and called out, “Kaleb, next room? This one looks close.”

Alex laughed softly at that. “It’s much nicer having someone else check rooms.” He said. Alex took a moment as they walked to think about what Nate asked. Did he feel better? With Carlos’ confidence and Kaleb’s quiet leadership. “I feel better having more eyes and ears to keep out for danger. I think I can handle the city with them with us.” Alex admitted.

Kaleb chuckled at Carlos’ words. “Yes this is very true.” He said when Carlos hooked his arm with Kaleb’s and kissed his cheek. Kaleb nodded, “Yes I saw his arms.” He said with a smile, shaking his head at the other man. He watched as Carlos pulled away, checking the next room. “No disagreements there.” Kaleb said with a grin. Kaleb increased his pace, heading to the room that Carlos had spoken of. Stepping in carefully, he checked it out and saw the connector to the other building. It was quite a big step up to the other building though, and he thought about the scarred Alex and how he’d get up that. It would be tough for someone to normally climb up, let alone one with a limp.

After picking up a few abandoned bullets, Carlos made his way to the next room over to check it out with Kaleb. He crossed his arms as he examined the window. Hmm. “Thats probably our best bet, isn’t it?” He asked Kaleb also seeing the problem that might come with their injured friend. He backed out and called out to the two, “I think we found your connection, but it’s going to be harder for Handsome to get up.” He poked his head back in before poked it out once more. “We can handle it.” He shrugged towards Kaleb. If Kaleb thought they could do it, they could probably do it.

Nate considered this. “I think you’ve made an impression on Carlos already. How do you do that?” He asked as they made their way to the room. It really wasn’t much of a question. He knew exactly how he did that. It was the same way Alex made an impression on him so fast. It was just strange to have someone else also notice that. Handsome. He looked at Alex and agreed. Carlos was certainly not wrong there.

Alex heard Carlos up ahead saying they find the connection. He also heard that it would be harder for him. Wait, did he really associate the word handsome with himself already? Alex looked over at Nate and shrugged. “Do what? I’m just me..” Alex was confused at what Nate meant. He finally entered the room and his face drained a little at the climb to get to the other building. Oh boy. “That’s definitely going to be fun to climb.” Alex said sarcastically.

Kaleb looked at Carlos and nodded. “It is our best bet. We got this. Though we might need to help your friend.” Kaleb said with a wink. He looked back at the two when they made it in. He also noted the color drain from Alex’s face and chuckled at his comment. “Well, who’s first?” He asked with a grin.

Carlos looked at Kaleb with a big grin that spoke too many things for the two of them. “Beauty incarnate needs help climbing up this admittedly steep and difficult slope that would otherwise be dangerous and irresponsible for someone in his condition to attempt? Oh the tragedy, I’ll just have to see what I can do about that.” He gave Kaleb a playfully nudge before turning back to the other two. Kaleb could be his wingman any day. “Glasses, join me over here would you? I’m going to need you for stability help. I could probably carry him up, but it would be horribly unfortunate if I happen to slip and fall to our untimely deaths.”

Nate was both alarmed and relieved at the plan to get Alex up. He gave Alex’s hand a squeeze, said, “Good thing you’ve made a friend with the strong guy,” and moved to stand opposite of Carlos who was already pointing out and up the window. “You see what we have to do?” Nate nodded understanding intuitively. “I’m not as strong as you,” he warned. Carlos nodded. “Yeah, but you have stable hands. I can tell. If Kaleb climbs all the way up first, you climb up halfway, and I’ll move him along. You stabilize us as we move. Should be fine, especially if we’ve got you watching out for us.” He turned his attention to Kaleb. “I think it’s a solid plan. Doesn’t even involve explosives this time.”

Alex chuckled at that as he watched as Kaleb went up first. He moved over to the other two, not really sure what the plan was, but he was definitely curious. “What do I need to do?” He asked when he got close to them. Wait he had plans that involved explosions? Alex was very unsure at this point. Especially when he heard the comment about slipping and falling to his death.

Kaleb chuckled at the nudge from Carlos. “Of course, you must help him.” Kaleb said with a laugh. Kaleb climbed his way up first, before turning and laying on his stomach to help get the others up. “Ready when you two are.” He said with a smile. “And yes, thank goodness for no explosions.” He added with a laugh.

Nate watched Kaleb moved all the way up. The actual climb wasn’t that bad, but for someone with Alex’s injuries, that would not be an ideal situation. They were right. He moved out the window and climbed about halfway up. Thankfully it was not too much a climb. If all three of them were there, they could practically make a chain that Alex could climb along. Having two extra people could come in extremely useful.

“All you’ve got to do is climb to me, monkey man,” Nate answered with a smile and arms out as he braced himself on the rubble. It was pretty stable overall. This could work.

Carlos slipped his arm around Alex. “Monkey man? Are you holding out on us? Is it because we just met?” He laughed as he hoisted Alex up. “We will have plenty of time for you to show us what exactly that means.”

Nate rolled his eyes. “Just don’t put any pressure on your hurt leg. Do everything else you would normally.”

“And I’ll be your other leg,” Carlos finished climbing right with him.

Alex looked at Nate, swallowed a little before looking at Carlos. He felt the man slide his arm around Alex. “Alright. Here we go. And I’ll show you when my legs better.” He told Carlos. Alex put his good leg up, reaching with a hand to hold onto Nate’s arm. He used Carlos as his other leg like the man said. He made it up and the next time he reached up, Kaleb took his hand. The blonde pulled him the rest of the way up. Alex felt himself be pulled up and his back was flat on the landing. He sat up, looking between Kaleb who was helping Nate and then at Carlos. Alex shifted and went to stand up.

Once Alex was all the way up, Nate and Carlos climbed up to the next building as well. As soon as Nate was finished, he stood at Alex’s side. Carlos came up behind them, tossing his arms around both Alex’s and Nate’s shoulders. “I think that went splendidly, what do you think? Everything okay? What did you do to your leg anyway?” He peered down at it again. “Someone knows their stuff though? Which one of you is the medical genius?”

Nate rolled his eyes and nodded. “That would be me. Thanks. And I wouldn’t say a genius just doing what I can.” He slipped his hand into Alex’s out of habit and certainly not to prove a point that Carlos did not seem willing to notice. It didn’t seem to matter anyway, because Carlos bounded away to grab Kaleb’s hand, swing it once, toss it in the air, and laugh as he moved along to check the area.

Alex looked at Nate with a smile and then let out a small laugh when Carlos came up and put his arms on Alex and Nate’s shoulders. “It went really well. Thank you. Oh that? Bear got me with her claws.” Alex said softly. He felt Nate take his hand and sighed happily. Alex looked around, before following as Carlos made his way to Kaleb.

Kaleb was happy with how that climb had gone. He heard Alex’s comment on what happened to his leg and looked back. “Good thing you had a medic with you. I’ve seen some nasty things with cuts and swipes on people.” Kaleb said. He chuckled as Carlos came up to him, grabbing his hand and swinging it once and laughed, before checking the area. Kaleb checked the rooms on one side of the hall. So far nothing. As he opened one room, stepped in, standing by the window and ducked as he heard a gunshot. The glass window shattering around him. They found them.
