Hayden led the way down the street. Thankfully, nothing in or around Jackson was too far, so even though getting to the milk might take them a little longer, the rest should all be together. “Sheep!” Grace exclaimed as they moved into the street. “Are they as fluffy as mommy says? She said they were like big pillows!” She raised one hand and squeezed her fingers as she tried to remember something. “They have… white… fluffy?” She scrunched her face trying to remember what it was called on them.
Ezekiel pounded down the road with this little girl who was quickly becoming… what? A friend? A partner? Maybe even a daughter? That was a terrifying thought, and he was not sure he was ready for that, but in times of crisis like this, they did not always have a choice. These things were thrust upon them. These girls did not ask for their parents to die. They deserved a second chance at something good. Like running to the bakery. “Turn down this street and then keep running. The bakery will be close.”
