Theo was going to say something else when Ezekiel swooped in and shook his head. Now was not the time. He moved quickly so that he could opened the door for the rest of them as Soren and Josh also walked through to leave. Hayden chose to stay close by in case they needed someone a little older around. Emmett was not sure what to do, so he followed the men who looked for someone he hoped could be a friend one day. There were less people out now that it was later. It was not dead or anything, and the strung lights kept everything pretty visible. People were either heading home or back to their places of work. Some people did not mind staying open or working a little longer in the day. A lot called it after dinner since so many were up so early. “Did anyone hear if he said he was going somewhere? Bathroom. Fresh air. Anything like that?” Ezekiel had not but he hoped someone had. Theo shook his head as well as Emmett. Ezekiel bit back his sigh. “Okay, Kaiden is right. He would not have gone far. He would stay close.”​

Alex knew one thing and one thing only right now, he could not lose Nate. That was something he would not have happen, and he appreciated Ezekiel coming in like he did. He followed them outside of the cafeteria but he didn't see anything. Alex looked around, but there was no sign of his partner, and he didn't even know if he had decided to go somewhere. He moved so he stayed close to his brother, unsure of where to even start looking. Jacob stayed with Hayden, just in case he needed help, or they needed someone to patch Nate up if he'd hurt himself. Kai moved with Ezekiel and sighed. "Where should we check first?" He asked, and Alex wasn't helpful because he didn't know the town. "Um. Medical tent?" Alex suggested, but he wasn't sure. It was all he could think of.​

“If he was hurt, we already have Jacob with us. Wouldn’t he stay here?” Theo asked. Emmett shook his head. “Nate is a medic. Maybe he would feel more comfortable in there.” They went back and forth a couple of times. Ezekiel was not paying much attention to either of them. They were not being exactly helpful. “This is what we will do.” They stopped talking to face him. “We are going to split into two groups. One group will go this way, and the other group will go that way. Theo, you and Emmett walk down that way towards the stables. I doubt that is where he went, but it is worth checking everywhere between. Alex, Kaiden, and I will go with you.” He lowered his voice. “We are with you.” He spoke normally again. “We will check down this way towards the Medical tent.” His gaze slid to Jacob and Hayden. “Can you stay central? In case he did not leave. Also in case one of the groups needs to yell for you?” He did not think it would lead to that, but he wanted to make sure. “We are going to find him, Alex. It’s going to be okay.”​

Alex listened to them, but his mind was running different scenarios. Maybe this wasn't what Nate wanted? This wasn't where they should've come? Alex looked at Ezekiel hearing him and nodded, smiling though it did not reach his eyes. "Okay. That sounds like a good plan." Alex agreed, as Kaiden stood on the other side of him. Jacob looked at Ezekiel when he asked and nodded. "We'll be right here if you need me." Jacob said, dipping his head as Cameron tagged along with Emmett and Theo. Alex moved with Kaiden and Ezekiel towards the medical tent. " I hope so. I just.. I don't know what I'd do without him." Alex said quietly, looking at Ezekiel when he spoke.​

“Alex, it’s going to be okay. Jackson is not that big. We will find him.” Ezekiel felt like they were losing Alex already and they only just got him back. He gave Kai a worried glance, hoping that this worked out for them. They needed to find him. He could not have gone far. He had not. He might have been hard to see for anyone not looking for him. Maybe for someone who was not used to looking for people when the day started to get darker. He was not very far at all. Down the strip, tucked into one of the intersections, Nate was sitting on the street, his back against the wrap around porch of one of the buildings. Both legs were bent but not all the way to his chest. His arm was dangling in front of him as he leaned over his knees.​

Alex heard those words and bit his lip. He hoped so. He trusted his brothers but he couldn't get the idea out of his mind that he'd already been loosing Nate, ever since Washington. As they walked down the street, he looked around, his eyes searching for him. Kai had seen that worried glance and he had sighed softly. Sharp brown eyes searched before his heart stopped then sped up. "Nate!" Alex cried out, seeing him tucked into an intersection. He took off over to him, but stopped about a half a foot away. "Nate? A- Are you okay?" he asked him, kneeling down in front of him, looking at him concerned.​

Ezekiel turned his attention in the direction Alex went running. There he was. The wide brim of the hat covered so much of him when he was hunched over like that. He could not see Nate’s face. He looked back towards the cafeteria and waved to grab Jacob and Hayden’s attention. He didn’t want to yell out. Once he did, he pointed towards them, down the small path that did not go far. He nodded towards the other two. He would go tell the other group, but he did not want to leave Alex. He did not want to leave in case he needed to do something else. Hayden was already heading that way. Nate did not sit up. If anything, he lowered his head more so that the hat would keep his face hidden. “I- I didn’t mean to leave.” His voice was raw. “I only wanted- to, um.” He paused. Breathed maybe. “I couldn’t…” His voice drifted away. He lifted his hand, the one that was normal. The one that hadn’t betrayed him. “I- I can’t…” Another pause. A longer pause. When his voice came back, it was even smaller. “I didn’t mean to leave.”​

Alex looked at Nate, seeing him lower his head more, and the hat kept his face hidden. He heard that raw voice, that pause and saw him lift his normal hand. Alex breathed out a soft sigh, moving so he sat beside Nate, arm wrapping around his shoulders. "Hey. It's okay." He said, even though he'd been terrified. He knew something was wrong but he couldn't.. he was trying to make his partner better and hold himself together too. "Shh. Breathe love." Alex whispered, pulling Nate into his side. Kaiden stood beside Ezekiel, watching them, concern in his body. "They have a long road of healing to go." Kai said softly as Jacob walked with Hayden to inform the others.​

Nate collapsed into Alex, knocking the hat off so that it skidded in front of them. He turned his face so that he could bury it in Alex as he cried. Because he couldn’t stop now. He had been trying so hard to keep it together. He wanted to be the happy sheep herder who laughed and smiled. He wanted to be the guy who waved away the problems, because they weren’t actually all that bad. He wanted to have cried about the loss and then moved on like he did before. Except he just kept crying. Over and over. It never seemed to stop. “I- I- I was just gonna go outside,” he choked between sobs. “But there were- were all these- these, uh, people.” He tried to breathe it in. “Everywhere.” Capture all that sad to shove away for later. “I c-couldn’t get out- out of- of- of the way.” He wasn’t very good at not being sad anymore. He could not hide it. There was too much in him now.​

The moment Nate had collapsed into him, Alex wrapped an arm around him. He held him as close as he could, rubbing his back and side. Alex just sat there, kissing the top of Nate's head softly. "Shh. I'm right here. I know. There's a lot of people yes. But you can handle it. I know you can." Alex told him, holding Nate as close and as firmly as he could. "Let it out beautiful, that's the only way we can all heal. Would you like to go home? Home to our farmhouse?" Alex asked, wondering if Nate would prefer the comfort of their own little home rather than a side street in the town.​

Nate could have cried on Alex right there in the street for a much longer time. He could have cried for hours. He cried over so many things. The people he lost. The missions he failed. The things that went utterly wrong because of him. He made so many mistakes. So many. He could name them all. List them. But with that? His hand that was broken, because he could not focus in the middle of a battle. They were lucky it was only him who got hurt. What if his negligence caused someone else that kind of pain. What if he got yet another person killed? He finally nodded. He wanted to curl in Alex’s arms and stay there for the rest of time. He wanted to hide away where it was safe with him. He wanted to go home. Ezekiel, who was standing close but not too close with Kaiden, said louder than a whisper but still lower so as not to disturb anyone else who came by, “I can ask Soren and Josh to come by tomorrow instead? Maybe Kai and I can gather some things for you as well by then. Emmett and Cameron too.” He glanced down the street to see them heading that way as well. He held out a hand to at least slow them.​

Alex was there for Nate, he always would be. He held him close and waited, feeling the nod against him. He shifted them so he could get his arms under Nate and stood up, Nate was in his arms. "Hide away if you wish my love, I'll take us home." He said, and then looked down at the hat. Kai knelt down and grabbed the hat, gently setting it on Alex's head so it did not risk falling off. Alex looked at Ezekiel and nodded. "Please. I think we need some time to ourselves. But we appreciate.. I appreciate.. everything." Alex said, looking at them with a soft sigh.​

Nate didn’t even fight it when Alex picked him up. He curled into Alex like he was a child. He didn’t want to be an adult anymore. Being an adult hurt. It hurt so much. He didn’t think it could hurt worse than it did when his mama died. Or when he had to kill his brothers. But all of it hurt so much more. Maybe it was everything on top of everything else. He didn’t know, and he couldn’t deal with it. So he stayed as curled as he could, hiding his face against him. Ezekiel nodded to them. “Do you need help with the gates?” He would not be upset if Alex wanted to do this on their own. But he would also have one of them go for gates and doors if Alex thought that would help. ​

Alex felt Nate curl into him, felt his face against him. He looked at Ezekiel and thought for a long moment. "No, thank you. We'll be fine. I'll see you tomorrow. Good night brother." Alex said, turning away from Ezekiel and Kaiden. He rubbed Nate's back with one hand and headed out towards the gates. Alex started humming softly, moving them up the path and he used the hand under Nate's knees to open and close the gate behind them. Into the house, up some stairs and into the first bedroom on the left. That was where he set Nate down before he moved onto the bed and wrapped him up in his arms once more.

Kaiden watched as Alex headed off, biting his lip as he sighed, before he looked at Ezekiel. "We need to find Papa and Uncle Soren before they head to the farmhouse." Kai said, his voice low as he took his partner's hand and squeezed it. There was so much that happened today and Kai still wasn't sure how to process it completely.​

He was quiet as they moved. He probably should have talked. He should have filled the silence with some sort of movement or action. He should have tried to walk. Nate knew that these would have been the smartest things to do. He thought about them briefly, but otherwise was consumed by other things. Things that were eating away at his being. The only reason he was not all the way gone was that Alex was there. If he had stayed out there on the street any longer, what would have happened? He was barely aware of the movements into the house. Up the stairs. It wasn’t until he was on the bed and Alex was not holding him anymore that he started to panic. It was not very long, but between the time of being set down and having Alex hold him again, it felt like everything that was threatening to shatter was. A little whine slipped up his throat as he tried to find him. Those protective arms came, and Nate sucked in such a deep breath that he almost couldn’t breathe because of it. “Don’t leave. Please don’t leave.” His hands were frantically washing over him, making sure that he could find Alex. Hands? Hand. Just hand. “Stay with me.”

Ezekiel nodded to them as they left, assuring Alex that it was going to be okay. Once they were gone, he turned to Kai and pressed their foreheads together. This was far rougher than he could have ever imagined it being. “After, I have a long journey I think you need to know.” It was not his story to tell, and he would tell no one else, but Kai was his partner. He needed to know. He turned away to address the rest of the group and inform them of their findings. That they found Nate who had wandered a ways to get out of the way of others and found himself lost. He was fine. They went home. He thanked everyone and sent them home except for Hayden and Jacob. They needed to help them with their new mission. “They have not been gone too long, so I can only hope that they are still at one of your homes. We need to let them know that we will bring the welcome kits tomorrow.”​

In the short time he left Nate on the bed, he heard that whine. His heart hurt when he felt his partner wash his hand over him. “I’m not going anywhere baby. I’m right here. Shh. I’m here.” Alex whispered, holding him as close as he could. “I’ll never leave you. I promise.” Alex told him, kissing his head and rubbing his back and side. He didn’t know what was going on sometimes but he could usually figure it out. And he wasn’t going to leave Nate ever.

Kai looked at Ezekiel and sighed heavily. “Okay.” He said, only imagining how bad it really was. He moved with his partner to his dad and uncle. Jacob looked up and nodded. “Let’s try our house first.” Jacob suggested, happy that they’d found Nate.​

Nate never thought of himself as particularly needy. At least, he wasn’t any needier than anyone else. Yet, here he was. He was by far the whiniest and neediest that he had ever been. He wished that he could rationally turn it off. That would have made this so much easier. Nothing was easy though. He touched Alex’s cheek with his hand and gasped back what might have been a sob, but no tears came. No more tears. He was tired of tears. “I couldn’t find you,” he whispered. “You were right there, and I couldn’t find you.”

Ezekiel nodded. That was where he wanted to try first as well. They did not need to be the whole group now, so Theo and Emmett suggested that they and their partners go to their own places for the night. Hayden was immensely concerned and had to remind himself that these were not his children. Even if Alex and Nate were young enough he to be Kaiden’s younger brothers, and they certainly all treated Alex like that was the case, that he had only just met them. Perhaps later he would do something about it. Everyone needed a parent, and these two clearly did not have any. Not anymore. Ezekiel hoped that they were not too late. He was sure that they would notice these two walking the streets. They weren’t exactly discreet most of the time.​

Alex did not mind holding Nate, did not mind the needy and even whiny part of his love. He would be there no matter what for Nate. He heard the whisper, felt the touch to his cheek, and the gasp. "I'm here, shh. I'm right here. I've got you and I'm not going anywhere." Alex whispered, holding Nate to his chest, arms wrapped around him tight. "Nothing's going to take you from me beautiful."

Kaiden moved with Ezekiel as did Jacob. He was concerned for Alex and Nate as well, even though he didn't know them well enough yet. He looked at Hayden as they walked to their homes. Josh and Hayden were neighbors once more with Jacob and Soren, something that never changed. "Are you okay?" Jacob asked Hayden softly. He'd been around his brother in law enough that he knew something was on his mind. Kaiden squeezed Ezekiel's hand gently as they walked. No words, just touch.​

He pushed away his glasses, willingly going blind like he felt anyway. He tossed them to where he hoped was the side table. If not, then he was going to have a fun time trying to find them later. His vision really had gotten significantly worse, and he was not sure why. His mama told him that was what happened to eyes once they stopped having to strain to work. He weakly nodded, believing those words. Alex was his lifeline. He was the anchor. He was the shield when all hope shattered around them. “Who’s got you then?”

Their neighboring houses clearly had one in use and not the other. Clearly, because the front door to Jacob and Soren’s house was open and there were several boxes stacked out front on the porch. From inside, the group could hear Soren. “But do you think they’re going to need more than that? It’s been a long time since I was that young.” Ezekiel stepped inside with Kaiden, and raised a hand to get their attention. Soren, hefting a large box of what looked like a random assortment of things, paused. “Hey there, kiddo. What’s going on?” Hayden looked at Jacob and nodded. “I am fine, but I am not the one I am worried about.” He really had taken to being a father. It was his real passion in life. He might have loved marine biology and sharks, but he had a feeling that even in the old world, this would have been his calling as well.​

Alex heard glasses clatter and he knew he’d be finding those in the morning. Not that he minded. He heard the question and blinked. “Me? I’ve got myself and I’ve got you. What more do I need?” He asked. He had his brothers, he had Nate and that was all he needed. “Now get some rest beautiful.” Alex suggested, rubbing his back.

Josh looked at Soren and hummed. “Maybe.” He said, helping him when he saw Kaiden and Ezekiel come in. “Papa. We’re going to give them this welcome kit stuff tomorrow. We had a bit of an.. incident so they’re resting at the farmhouse alone.” Kaiden explained as Jacob looked at Hayden. “I figured it wasn’t yourself you were worried about. Thinking of adding more kids to this family?” He asked, a smile on his face. He had been thinking the same thing. Those two deserved something stable, a family. A home.​

Nate would never understand how Alex could be like this. How he could always be that level-headed person who would always make it. He had been that for Nate since the moment they met. How long did it take. For Nate to cry with him? Maybe a couple of days? Maybe. It was never the other way around. Nate never felt like Alex needed to tell him the same kinds of things. He was so much stronger than him. His eyes closed and he tried to rest. It didn’t work. “Alex?” He was so tired, and the rubbing was soothing. “Are you okay?”

Soren took that to mean that something happened that they were not going to be privy to in this moment, so he nodded and plopped the box by the door. They were not worried about theft or anything like that. They knew everyone here, and if anyone wanted to try something, they would have to answer to Soren and Josh. They may not have been high ranking officers anymore, but that didn’t mean that they did not carry themselves with their self-appointed authority. “Alright, tomorrow it is. Everyone okay?” He didn’t need specifics. He just wanted to make sure nothing was too dire. Hayden smiled at Jacob and shrugged. “Isn’t that what we do? We add and add to this beautiful family? Everyone deserves that. And don’t worry. They don’t have to be yours.” He grinned with a barely concealed laugh.​

Alex tried his best to be there for Nate, to be there no matter what happens. To be the rock he needed. But.. even the toughest rocks are worn down eventually. They become smooth, small, or have large cuts and cracks put into them from outside sources. He heard that voice, and the question. Was he okay. Really? “I’m fine.” He said, and it was only a half lie because he was fine, or.. mostly fine. The talk with his brother earlier helped a lot. He kept up the rubbing and sighed. “I will be fine. I promise.”

Josh looked at Kaiden and nodded, hearing him. And Kai looked at his uncle and shook his head. “It will be but it’s not our story.” Kai replied, knowing that if Alex or Nate wanted to talk about it then they would. Jacob looked at Hayden and chuckled, nodding. “That’s exactly what we do. It started with Kai and Theo, then Cam and Emmett, Elijah, Ezekiel. Now Alex and Nate. Though I wouldn’t mind taking Nate under my wing. He seems to be very smart. He is a medic I believe.” Jacob said with a smile.​

More than anything else, even over his own healing, Nate wanted Alex to be okay. He lost too. He was the one taken. The one whose skin was sliced by unforgiving blade. The one with wounds too deep for Nate to see. How was it fair for Nate to be so broken when Alex had gone through worse? He will be fine. Will be. Not now. It hurt to hear, and Nate needed to hear it. He needed to hear that he was not alone. He also needed to hear that Alex needed him too. His eyes were heavy from the draining day. Days. Once upon a time, he laid on the ground and kept Alex close to his chest. He would play with his hair, and bury his own face in it. Maybe they would do that again one day. Maybe. In a small voice that sounded like it was floating away from him, he whispered, “I love you.”

Soren understood, and though he would have liked to know more, he knew that was not his place to ask Kai, and not Kai’s place to tell. He placed a hand on Josh’s shoulder. “Well, I guess that’s a little less we’ll have to do in the morning.” He moved to Jacob, sliding an arm around his waist. “Are you two plotting without us?” Hayden laughed and held out his hand for Josh to join them. “No, we’re talking about how your husband is going to adopt a medic. How did you find that out? He hardly talked during dinner.” Ezekiel felt this might be their cue to go, though he was not sure how to say that. Kai’s family was still intimidating for him.​

Alex would always want Nate, he loved Nate so much and he just really wanted him to be okay. “I love you too.” Alex said softly, kissing the top of his head. His face buried in Nate’s hair as he held him close. “Good night beautiful.” Alex whispered, as he slowly fell asleep.

Josh looked at Soren, feeling the hand on his shoulder. “Yep.” He said with a smile. He saw Hayden hold out his hand and Josh walked over and took his hand. He squeezed it gently and smiled. Jacob felt the arm slid around his waist and smiled. “Us? No. Not us.” Jacob said before he looked at Hayden and smiled. “Who do you think put that cast on? It was very obvious how he was when I did that clued me in to him being a medic.” Jacob replied. Kaiden looked at Ezekiel before he smiled at his dad. “We’re going to head home dad.” Kai said, stepping over to Hayden to give him a goodbye hug.​

Nate was only awake long enough to make out that Alex said words. He curled into Alex, eyes heavy. He was thinking about how much better it felt with arms around him than when he was sitting alone on the street. And then he fell asleep. The kind of sleep where very little would be able to wake him until his mind decided it did not want to cooperate anymore.

Hayden nodded as though this were obvious. “Well, yes, I assumed as much, but I can’t assume that just because you put a cast on someone, you can tell their vocation.” Though, he guessed if anyone could, it would be Jacob. His attention turned to Kai, and he gently wrapped his arms around him. “Of course. You did an amazing job today. Those two are so lucky to have you. The both of you.” He pulled away and nodded to Ezekiel who nodded back. That was as close as the two of them ever got to physical affection.​
