I can understand starting with a full Tyrant Lizard might be a bit disruptive to some players.
We have to take this in context. Without high Essence Solar Survival Charms, that Tyrant Lizard is a trivial opponent to any of the combat monsters in the group. If we're worried about its high strength, Sigrdrifa can hurl that Tyrant Lizard over the horizon if she sets her mind to it. At some point she might try to find out if you can get the Unconquered Sun's attention by pelting the actual sun with rocks. When you have eight Celestials, a Tyrant Lizard is a rounding error.

Most Merits can't be purchased dot by dot, even if you wanted to. It doesn't make any sense to buy intervening levels that aren't even valid. The only sane interpretation of the rules that I see is, 'The full cost of a Merit is number of dots x 3 XP'.
What about instances where you, for example, increase the size of your army enough to give you an extra effective dot of command? Or you have an ally that increases significantly enough in power to do the same. Would such story related dots granted cost xp?

This makes me laugh. But that is a very good point.

Story related dots are not purchased with XP. They are awarded by the ST as the story demands. Paying XP for a merit is reserved for when you want to exercise control over the narrative by causing some fortuitous event to happen to your character.

Oooooh. I see, I see. That makes me look upon XP in a whole new positive light.

You can go hunt a fuzzy Tyrant Lizard and use animal taming Charms on it to get a 3 dot familiar for 0 XP if you roleplay it out. It will just take a while. You can even ask Sigrdrifa to tame it for you if I buy her Friendship with Animals Approach.

If we can get famous enough, I bet we can RP our way to some 1-dot followers dedicated to cleaning up after all these Tyrant lizards.

Just saying, I'm not doing it, that's mortal work.

That is indeed cool. I had always thought we had to pay for that sort of thing.

If you are planning on going down the Survival route for charms, it wouldn't be a bad idea. Some of those upgrades for familiars aren't bad either, and was considering getting them myself. But I would want to push you into a roll of animal handler if you would rather focus on other things.

Though... the idea of a fang of tyrant lizard cavalry would be grand.

Now thats the life. I bet we could also get it so feared that it gets its own little cult that feeds it offerings in hopes of keeping at bay its ire.

Just a heads up if you guys want something kinda neat I found just now while I was looking for info on Exalted. You can ANIMATE CHARACTER PORTRAITS FOR FREE with an AI Here. It's pretty cool and brings some unexpected life to things.

Oh, I remember reading that paper. That was a good one. It hadn't occurred to me to apply it here, though. Cool idea.

Omg. Those are awesome. That is so cool.

D. Rex D. Rex , yeah you wouldn’t be buying this Lizard with XP. And Random Word Random Word is right about how dots are bought with XP, too.

It also isn’t disruptive at all. I’m not really worried about that. Less so with all that Random Word Random Word pointed out. LOL.

WlfSamurai WlfSamurai ST ruling in the matter?

Though I don't mind starting with a two dot familiar. As valuable and awesome an ally it would be,, I can understand starting with a full Tyrant Lizard might be a bit disruptive to some players. And a younger tyrant lizard would be easier to justify capturing and taming

Bear in mind, I'm toying with the notion of just outright going for Tyrant Lizard for Chalice's Spirit Shape.

Or an Armored Kraken.

I keep looking at Underwordly animals (gravehounds, crows, rats, etc.) and none of them are doing it for me. Thankfully, it doesn't matter until it does so don't hold up play on my account.

Lol and I was thinking of making it my anima banner. But seeing it as a spirit shape would be much cooler. Could ride you! Or ride side by side!

Armored kraken! Those are one of those legendary sized ones, right? I got to fight a giant river kraken armored with a sunken ship like a shell. That was a fun fight. And I could imagine a giant kraken pooling a mammoth into a thick peat bog, or one breaking out of the ice like a submarine.

There is the option of a fogshark. They aren't exactly underwordly, but fit the bill for ethereally. And scary.

Oh, uh, I realized I never actually asked how Super Strength was going to work in your world, WlfSamurai WlfSamurai . The book alludes to the classic Superman Problem of, 'you're stronger than the thing you want to lift, so it breaks into pieces.' This is indeed realistic. If you tried to lift a hundred ton stone block by exerting enough force to do so in a palm sized area you'd just start smashing through it, or it would fracture from the shearing forces and you'd end up with a little piece of it. It's also tricky, because once we start putting physics into Exalted all sorts of weird things happen. Like, that also implies feat of strength Charms double as incredibly strong Resistance Charms like Adamant Skin Technique - if you applied enough force to cause a huge chunk of granite to shatter by shearing forces it would ordinarily shatter you first. It would also usually make you sink into the ground, which is often much squishier than the stone, so it might have to have some kind of Graceful Crane Stance style magic built in to prevent a hundred tons of weight concentrated into your feet from just carving right through the earth.

Comic book super strength is often really some kind of telekinetic material strengthening power mediated through touch. You pick up the bus with one hand, and it doesn't just break into two pieces because while it looks like you're lifting it with your hand, there's really some kind of magic equally distributing the force over the full surface of the bus, and maybe even actively reinforcing it to hold it together unless you want to destroy it.

So like, I should probably figure out before Sigrdrifa tries to lift Afureru riding a Tyrant Lizard to throw her three range bands at an enemy if her hand will just punch through the poor Tyrant Lizard's flesh with a wet squishing noise before she gets them more than a few centimetres off the ground, or maybe just make Sigrdrifa sink into the ground. Presumably Afureru would want to purchase Sometimes Horses Fly Approach or something before we tried this so she could stick the landing instead of going splat.

Sigrdrifa averages ~43 successes on a feat of strength if she goes all in, with infinite strength for the purposes of determining feasibility. There isn't much she can't destroy, but I'm curious whether she'll be able to exercise that strength to lift superhero style in addition to just smashing fist sized holes in basically anything. The book seems to suggest 'no', but that answer strikes me as out of genre.

Ragnar would like this woman.

Epiphany Epiphany
Also, was looking around and saw this. Not quite a gravehound, but similar enough to be of interest for something underworldy.

Don't know the rest of the stats but if your interested i can find out.

I suppose rules as written what Sigrdrifa really needs is an immense artifact shovel. Like too big for a warstrider big. Titan sized. That would give her an indestructible source of leverage to apply huge forces over a wide area instead of an area the size of her fist.

Well. There is a monks spade. Pretty cool weapon. Then make it tree sized.

Or have her artifact weapon be a goremaul. Using "weapon" loosely as it is literally just an orichalcum column from a first age cathedral.

Or heck! Snag a warstrider's weapon! They pretty darn huge.

Also. A big grappler like her, she could do a lot of damage with an artifact razor harness.

But! There is an idea of a weapon that comes to mind. The extending staff of Sun Wukong.

Modeling off of that.

Could make a green jade wrackstaff, then give it evocations that allow it grow to immense sizes.

That's a fantastic idea. I'll have to get me one of those.

I think it was Sun Wukong who famously declared, "Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world."
