run, boy, run - this world is not made for you
The brunette snapped at Diego, the latter flinching. This woman had a short fuse, and definitely wasn't the gentle kind. The man would need to pay attention to what he said to her, so she wouldn't shoot him in a fit of rage. "I know-", he stammered, deciding to just stay quiet for now. The home owner was right, of course. Diego didn't know what it was like outside of the Walls. This was the first time he'd ever gone out into the outside world. He could only imagine how hard things really were, going off of stories he had heard from travelers and fellow soldiers who had gone on missions outside of the LA walls. It was scary, thinking that things were so unsafe here. Even so, Diego would take the woman's advice to heart. Maybe she was right, and he really did need to stop being so optimistic for once.
βBut you two are clearly too dumb to get around on your own. If fools want to kill yourself trying to chase a fantasy, be my guest. I can only take you so far. And I ainβt helping you. Iβve got supplies to pick up in Colorado. After that, yβall gotta figure it out on your own.β
Diego sighed. It made sense that the brunette wouldn't actually want to help them, only taking them so far on a journey she needed to take anyway. "Thank you.", the former soldier whispered nervously. He would be lying if he said that this short woman didn't at least scare him a little bit. She was angry, felt threatened easily, and didn't look like she would hesitate to pull the trigger on him. Even so, the man was grateful that she was willing to help them on their journey at least a little bit. Getting them to Colorado would help the duo a lot. They wouldn't have to walk that way, which would hopefully help Sophia in healing her swollen ankle. "From Colorado on to Toronto, we will just walk. Maybe we can find someone else to take us a little further again." It was dangerous, relying on strangers like this, but Diego also knew that this month-journey on foot would kill them both if they didn't find a vehicle.
βI have one rule, if yβall come with me. Do what I say, when I say it. If we get into some shit out there and youβre foolinβ around not listeninβ to me, itβll get all of us killed. Both of you gotta get your head out of the clouds if youβre gonna survive to Toronto after me.β
Diego nodded anxiously in agreement. This woman seemed to know how to survive in the After. From this moment on, he was going to make sure to follow her every move, and listen intently to every word she had to say. The former soldier could fight, if necessary. He would only need to get over his anxiety and actually start relying on the training he had received since the age of five. It would be difficult by himself, but he was certain he could manage protecting both himself and Sophia once the brunette had dropped them off in Colorado. The home owner mentioned they would leave in an hour, the young man nodding once again. He didn't even dare to correct her when she referred to the blonde as his girlfriend, swiftly rushing to Sophia's side to help her with whatever she needed.
They didn't have much stuff to pack, anyway. Most of their belongings still rested on the ground outside of the house. Diego would pick up their jackets and items just before they would leave in the woman's truck. Even though they didn't have much, the few items they did have could help them sometime in the long run. Diego watched as the woman turned around to leave, hesitating shortly before speaking up again.
"You can call me Sammy."
Diego's lips curled into a gentle smile, the man exhaling softly as he felt some of his anxiety fade away. "I'm Diego.", he swiftly added, finally watching the woman descend the staircase to grab the things she needed herself.
