The dress was itchy, and her feet were killing her but at least she looked hot with her new red hair, pulled together into two braids, to complete her ensemble for the night. Even though she was feeling herself she still felt like shit. She missed Skylar. It had been such a long time since they’ve had seen each other. Carmen didn’t know how she would feel if she saw her here tonight and part of her didn’t want to but an even bigger part did want to see her beautiful face. She had fucked up and her fuck up pushed her lover into the arms of someone else.

Now, she had to watch Skylar kiss and post about how happy she was, it hurt. It hurt like hell. It hurt so bad Carmen couldn’t even get out of bed most days. Tonight was the one day she finally decided to get off her ass and go out to do something she loved. So, here she stood on the outskirts of the sweaty bodies nursing the random concoction the bartender made for her. It was good, you could barely taste the alcohol which was just the way Carmen liked it. The mix of booze and the thumping of the bass relaxed her, making her hips sway to the beat of the song. Now she was really feeling herself, the liquor fueled her actions and her feet began to carry her to the middle of the dance floor. Maybe she could find someone cute so she could get her mind off of Skylar for a little while.

Carmen weaved through the packed bodies, downing the rest of her drink while not paying attention to where she was going. A hand on her arm stopped her dead in her tracks. She whipped around, pulling her arm free from whoever grabbed her.

“What the fu-“‘Carmen’s blood ran cold and she shrank back, folding her arms across her chest, “Oh.. hi Skylar.” She hadn’t seen her in so long and the smell of her perfume had her heart racing.

“What do you want?” Carmen instinctively took a step back, trying to put some distance between the two of them even though all she wanted to do was grab Skylar and pull her into the nearest empty room, Skylar just had that effect of Carmen and she probably always would.

Nothing But Thieves

Number 13

The nights were drawing in quick. A full moon illuminated the sparse clouds and bounced off Reuben’s wingmirrors. As had become as frequent a stomping ground as the station or the courts, he found himself in another quiet parking lot, filled only with empty vehicles and discarded trash.

He sat in a familiar position; steering wheel hovering over his lap, headlights dimmed, engine off. In his left hand a lit cigarette dangled between his fingers, smoke slipping out of the barely cracked window. His right thumb and forefinger loosely gripped a white card. On it, a red lipstick print.

There were few cars on the road adjacent to him – occasionally a taxi, presumably ferrying Halloween celebrants unwilling to risk a DUI. Reuben recalled his days as a fresh-faced academy graduate, patrolling highways and making traffic stops night after night. He bolted to vice as soon as the opening came and set his sights for there on out. There was no money chasing joyriders or the odd drunk. There was no fun, and not near enough risk.

Across the street lay a string of stores still untouched by the 21st century. Above the second store, a butchers that had welcomed no customers since the last mayor had sat in office, an occasional silhouette crossed behind the curtained window. Reuben would look up from the card, glance at the time, then resume his cigarette.

He did not know for how long he would be waiting. Thanks to the well-timed exchange of names, times and locations, Reuben had washed his hands of any major difficulty. He had no qualms fucking up someone that posed a threat to his business, and second to that, his life. Once upon a time it would have been too tempting to burst in, catch them off guard, put two rounds in each, and smugly take the paid two-week vacation while the internal investigation showed up nothing out of the ordinary.

Now it wasn’t just himself he was looking out for. He flipped the white card over in his fingers again. You need to take these guys out somewhat legally. He smirked. How vague. Anything can be legal if you spin it the right way. Give him an inch and he’ll take a mile – there was no doubt of that.

Once Isaac had decided that he didn't want anything, Skylar nodded and took off. Honestly she wasn't even thinking about her boyfriend at all. Her whole heart and soul was screaming for Carmen. It had been the whole time, really. Every time her heart beat it was beating painfully for Carmen and Skylar could feel it. She could feel it pounding achingly in her chest as if it were bleeding. Isaac was a good bandaid, sure, but nothing would give her heart that sweet relief like Carmen would. It became painfully obvious as Skylar trailed the beautiful redhead through crowds of people, pushing her way through groups, that Skylar was still in love with Carmen. At first all she wanted to do was talk but as she followed the girl through the crowd, inching closer and closer with each moment, all Skylar wanted to do was pull Carmen close. Skylar wanted to make things right and have Carmen by her side again. Any thought of how Isaac would feel about it slipped from her mind and suddenly Skylar didn't even care. She didn't care that she had a boyfriend or that she had left her expensive moisturizer at his house. The moment that Skylar grabbed Carmens arm everything slipped away. As Carmens beautiful eyes rested on Skylar her heart seemed to stop. The world around her blurred and all Skylar could focus on was the girl in front of her. The pain and the anger disappeared as Skylar gazed into her eyes and it felt like the first time that they kissed. Sweet relief from the world around her.

"Carmen." Skylars breath had been taken away as Carmens angelic voice said her name, "Carmen I-" Words escaped her and she watched as Carmen crossed her arms and took a step away from her. In that moment Skylar could feel her heart shattering. Was it too late to repair the damage that she had done? Had she pushed the love of her life away for good? Skylar took a deep breath, breathing in the intoxicatingly sweet smell of Carmens perfume and felt her knees get weak. They hadn't seem each other in so long that Skylar could feel herself urging to pull Carmen close and hold her. A lump lodged in her throat and Skylar had to swallow it hard. "Carmen I just wanted to say I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." Tears welled in Skylars eyes as she tried her hardest to fight her emotions. "I fucked up. I fucked up so hard. I didn't mean anything that I said to you. I'm so sorry." Skylar couldn't get the words right. Her heart was racing and the lump in her throat was getting bigger and bigger. Even breathing was becoming a task for Skylar as the pain and the heartache came racing to her all at once.

It had been so long. So so long since her heart felt full. Since that ache of having Carmen beside her had been fulfilled and that pain of loss had subsided that Skylar didn't even think about the pain of seeing Carmen would do to her. The emotions that followed would tear up her mind and make everything harder to say. Skylar wanted to tell Carmen she loved her. She wanted to tell Carmen that she didn't care if they had to keep their relationship a secret. That every second without Carmen was like torture. Without Carmens love Skylar was nothing. Of course her stupid emotions got in the way and Skylar knew better. She knew that Carmen would just laugh at her and walk away. As they stood there together Skylar tried to pull herself together. She willed the tears in her eyes to stay put and they did. They stayed in her eyes and stung like hell as they did so. Skylar would not cry in front of Carmen.

Isaac vixe vixe

Autumn hummed to herself as she looked her costume options over for the party. There were quite a few to pick from though she grinned to herself settling on a skin tight spider girl suit. A quick shower later smelling of coconut from her body wash and a hint of coffee from her lotion she slipped on the outfit not bothering to wear anything under the suit as it would just look odd with the tight outfit. So once she looked herself over in the mirror making sure her makeup, hair, and appearance were absolutely perfect she grabbed her keys setting off for the party.

Autumn planned to enjoy herself this evening drinking while in the hopes of sneaking off for a bit of fun with someone. Hell she would even be happy to take someone home with her or to their house if it came down to it. So once there she simply enjoyed seeing people in costumes for a bit before heading over to get a drink she had barely made it to the counter to order before a voice seemed to purr out at her. Her blue gaze flicked lightly to see whom she had the pleasure of speaking with. By the looks of it a zombie football player was the one who approached her. Autumn's gaze looked him over slowly as he put on the charm. “You would be correct so as your reward I shall allow you to get me said drink.”she said with a playful smile flickering onto her lips.

This was gonna be fun. He looked like just her type tall, yummy, and certainly having a way with words. The real question was should she play hard to get or simply enjoy being a bit easy tonight. She couldn’t help but move a bit closer as she waited for the drink allowing him to take in the full effect of her outfit. She was very glad to have chosen to not wear anything underneath tonight by the look in the males eyes he certainly was pleased with that decision as well. “So can I get the name of handsome zombie who’s getting me a drink?”she asked him.

I shouldn’t have worn this Ellie felt over dressed in her short skirt and tiny bra top. It looked like she was the only one that went all out for the annual Halloween teacher’s mixer and even though there was really no dress code, she still couldn’t help but regret her choice of outfit the night. Eleanor sighed over the rim of her glass. Maybe she should just go back to her room? Being alone would’ve been better than feeling like the new girl, just like she did when she was in high school when she had to move everywhere for her dad who was in the military.

Ellie pulled her shawl tighter around her body, feeling subconscious. It felt like everybody was staring at her, laughing at her, but she held her head as high as it would go. She might’ve been younger for a professor but that didn’t mean she wasn’t just as good, if not better, at her job. She could connect to the students in a way the older teacher couldn’t and she had worked her ass off to get where she was. Even so, she just wanted to leave. The party was boring and her feet were starting to throb from her choice in footwear. Ellie took a deep breath, downing the rest of her glass of Merlot before going back up to the bar. She ordered another glass from a man who wore black bunny ears and buttoned up vest.

Ellie tapped her finger nails against the bar top, along to the beat of the song coming out the speakers. She turned around to take in the scenery. Black and orange ballon garlands were hung up in each corner complete with steamers while fog tickled her feet as she walked through the party. She had to hand it to them, the hotel really went all out with the decorations and the selections food and drinks.

“Here you go, enjoy!” The bartender placed her drink down in front of her on a napkin. Ellie gave him a smile as she picked it up, as her way of a thank you. Now that she had her drink she planned to leave after it was finished which made her chug until she was out of breath, only a small gulp remained.

She turned to walk away and leave the rest of the but she was met with a hard chest. Ellie blinked in surprise, “Oh my gosh I’m so-“ her eyes looked up at the stranger but it wasn’t a stranger at all it was Mr. finch, it was the new biology professor. Eleanor’s cheeks tinged pink.

“Oh, Mr. Finch.. I’m so sorry I didn’t see you there.” She averted his eyes away from him, looking at the elevator and feeling conflicted. Her feet ached but she ached even more to get to know the new teacher.

“How are you liking the party so far?” She finally looked at his costume, laughing at the irony. A pirate and a mermaid.

“Well, looks like we unknowingly matched! How ironic, the two newbies.” She laughed, placing a hand on her stomach while trying to contain her laughter. Did she have to much to drink? Her head was a little fuzzy but, otherwise she felt fine.

Carmen

It was only one word but it made her head and her heart feel heavy.

“Carmen I-“ She couldn’t even look at her, it hurt too much. Instead she looked down at her sparkly red shoes, perfect for a Dorothy costume.

“Carmen I just wanted to say I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

"I fucked up. I fucked up so hard. I didn't mean anything that I said to you. I'm so sorry." Carmen’s lips parted to say something but, nothing came out. Her mouth was dry, so fucking dry so she swallowed to get rid of her cotton mouth but it didn’t help. Why did Skylar think it was a good idea to do this right now? Carmen pinched the bridge of her nose in frustration, letting out a sigh. Frustration, angry and longing clouded her mind in a clusterfuck of emotions. She wanted to nothing more than to hold Skylar again but, could she ever get over what was said between the two of them? Meaningless insults said in the heat of moment that they were going to regret one day, and that one day had come.

Carmen didn’t know what to say. First the first time in a very long time she was silent, even though her mind was racing with a billion things to say to Carmen but all she let coming back to was I love you and she knew it deep in her heart that it was true. Nothing her parents could say or do was going to change that fact that Carmen was in love with a girl- a beautiful women named Skylar Kennedy.

Carmen’s heart ached as she lifted her hand up to Skylar’s face, cupping her cheek.

“Can I kiss you?” She asked, tears welling up in her eyes. She didn’t care if Skylar had a boyfriend or not, it was a clear that Skylar didn’t even want him anyways.

“You would be correct so as your reward I shall allow you to get me said drink.” Isaac’s lips tugged up and over his perfect pearly whites. His eyes trailed all over the bombshell’s face, taking in her features and landing on her perfectly plump lips. He licked his own, before tearing his gaze away from her and towards the bartender.

“Four shots of tequila please, and whatever else the lady wants. It’s on me.”

The women shifted, inching closer to Isaac and giving him a better view of her assets. The smell notes coconut and coffee wafting your from her beautiful creamy skin.

“So can I get the name of handsome zombie who’s getting me a drink?” Isaac tore his eyes away from her chest, and blinked registering what had asked him.

“Isaac,” he extended out his hand, pulling it up this lips to press a kiss to back of her hand, “And you? Does this lovely creature have a name?” He asked, looking up at her from her hand. Before she had a chance to respond the bartender came back with their drinks. Isaac picked up one of the glasses and clinked his with hers.

“Cheers, to beautiful night filled with possibilities.” He winked before throwing back the tequila. There was something about this girl that he liked, and it was just the fact that she came in a spandex body suit, it was something else he couldn’t quite place his finger on but he was determined to find out how she ticked.

“So, your name?”

The whole room seemed like it was spinning. As Carmen stood there silent, Skylar listened to the sound of her heart beating painfully in her chest. The sound flooded her ears and drowned out the noises of the party going on around them. Skylar couldn't breathe as she waited for Carmen to say something. Say anything. A million scenarios played out in her head as she waited a response. Carmen could turn around and leave. Skylar wouldn't stop her again. If Carmen decided to leave then perhaps it was for the best, really. In that situation Skylar wouldn't know what to do with herself. She would probably go back to Isaac with her tail between her legs and admit defeat. Even then she didn't know what she would do. Would she stay in her content little relationship? There was nothing wrong with Isaac but he was just a temporary fix for her broken heart. How would she repair what had been so badly damaged? The next scenario was a bit happier, Carmen would take Sky into her arms and tell her it was okay and that she was sorry too. Of course this one was a little unlikely. If there was one thing Skylar knew about Carmen it was that she didn't show public displays of affection. Carmen would barely hold her hand in public for fear that it would look like they were in a relationship. It didn't matter how many times Skylar would reassure her that friends held hands too, Carmen was still anxious about it.

Out of all the scenarios that ran through Skylars mind, what Carmen did was not one of them. Carmens arm reached up and Skylar braced herself for Carmen to smack her and walk away. Her heart leaped when Carmens skin came in contact with her cheek. This was not the painful skin on skin contact that she had readied herself for, though. It was soft and gentle. Just as it always had before, Carmens touch sent shivers down Skylars spine and heat radiated from her touch. It warmed Skylars heart and she could feel the ache disappear from just that simple touch. Tears once again welled in Skylars eyes as she stared into Carmens eyes. Every little movement was a shock, now. Before Carmen never would have done anything like this. Every touch was behind a closed door unless it was simply platonic. Skylar couldn't believe her eyes or her ears as the girl in front of her asked to kiss her. The situation wouldn't have shocked her as much if it werent for the party that was going on around them. Suddenly Skylar was extremely aware of the party goers around her. This was not the Carmen that Skylar knew. This Carmen didn't care. It was a welcome change, really, as Skylar had begged her before to show her that she loved her outside of their private rooms.

Skylar wasn't going to waste a moment as she took a step forward and brought her lips to Carmens. She wasn't going to wait for Carmen just in case she changed her mind. As their lips connected fireworks seemed to go off in Skylars mind. This was what was right. Skylar wrapped an arm around Carmen and pulled her closer, never wanting to let go of her again. If this was a farewell kiss then Sky would have to get as much as she could out of the kiss as she could. Something told her, though, that this was a hello. This kiss felt more like a fantasy, like the end of the fairytale where the two lovers finally get their happily ever after. Skylar knew that her forever was Carmen, she was just waiting for Carmen to catch up.

Autumn had to hold in a laugh since the bartender happened to be her twin brother tonight. He certainly filled their glasses enough for them as Isaac ordered four shots of tequila and anything else they might want. A coy smile flickered across her lips as she watched his eyes settling on her chest. Men could be so fun with only having one thing on their minds yet who was she to judge? She couldn’t say much when she came to the party with all purposes of having a very fun night with someone. “Isaac.”The male finally introduced himself before taking her hand, kissing the back of it softly.

“And you? Does this lovely creature have a name?”he seemed to ask before her brother interrupted by setting the shots down with a smirk before slipping away to continue his job. Her gaze flicked watching him momentarily before looking back at Isaac lifting a glass with him. His words soon followed by them clinking glasses and both of them throwing back their drinks like experts. That would be good. Autumn hated a man who couldn’t handle his alcohol. It was never fun having to try and clean someone up. There were so many tempting options here to have fun with yet her focus remained focused on Isaac. The man certainly drew her in not only with his looks but his straightforward attitude.

She leaned in letting her chest brush against his her hair tickling at his face as she whispered into his ear.”My names Autumn and I’m sure you’ll remember it.”she said softly into his ear.”Since you’ll be moaning out my name later.~”she purred softly before pulling back away from him only to grab her second shot.

Carmen was becoming increasingly aware of the people who could be watching. She thought about the scandal that would ensue if someone had caught her with her hand like this, rested upon another girls -Skylar’s cheek in such an affectionate way. She thought about the million ways her family would punish her, probably take her car again, maybe they’d even kick her out? But in this moment, Carmen didn’t care. All that mattered was what she wanted, not what her parents wanted and what she wanted was to kiss the love her life whenever and where ever it felt right.

To Carmen’s surprise Skylar didn’t waste a any time in pressing her lips to Carmen’s making her feel like she was on cloud nine, no amount of substances could compare to the way she felt when Skylar touched her- kissed her. She sighed in content, moving her hand from Skylar’s cheek down to her waist pulling her in closer, just like she used too.

“I missed you..” Carmen mumbled against her lips, hoping she could even hear her over the loud music.

“Do you want to go get some air? Maybe talk?” Carmen asked over the music, giddy to have Skylar to talk to again. She had missed her so much and not even as a lover, as one of her best friends too. Once she got confirmation, she took Skylar by the hand and lead her outside. Carmen welcomed the cool air against her sweaty skin and leaned against the building.

“Skylar..” Carmen brought hand up to her forehead and sighed deeply. She couldn’t help but feel guilty for the way they had left things.

“I am so sorry.. I didn’t mean those things either. I was just..” she paused, tears welling up in her eyes, “hurt.. it hurt so bad watching you be with someone else when all I wanted was to have you for myself.” Her face flushed from her confession as she lifted her eyes to hold Skylar’s gaze.

    Wendall Young

Wendall looked at the evidence in his hands. The articles, the stories, all about the girl he fell in love with. He was right in assuming that Lavender was hiding something from him, but he never thought, it would be this. The fact that her father killed her mother. The lies she told him, about her parents. He felt betrayed. Not because of the rumors that she had something to do with it, he knew the girl that would be so gentle with his sisters, and with others would never even think to do something like that. It was the fact she felt the need to hide it from him, that she felt like she didn't trust him. It broke him, it broke him completely. After he had read everything, he rushed out to Lavender's home, knowing that she was finally home.

His sisters were with the clergy, they had been working on getting custody of them, and now they were just about to confront his stepfather, and mother with the evidence to make them sign over the rights for the girls over to him. He felt the warmth of the necklace that was now set around his neck. He had never felt more loved and cared for as he began life with the clergy. The teachings from the skilled master cook, were everything he ever wanted. The talks with Papa were so insightful and calming. He now understood why Lavender found a home with this group of amazing people, and now he had to but he was too hurt to even began to see the other side of things.

Wendall walked up to her house and knocked on her door. Once she had let him in, she had tried to embrace him but he took a step back. "Why didn't you tell me the real reason you came here, why you ran away from your past?" He quietly said as he placed down the articles. "Someone dropped this in the mailbox this morning. " He told her as he glanced at her face trying to see the truth in her eyes. "Why didn't you tell me about your father Lavender?"

Time seemed to slow down as Carmens lips connected with Skylars. The familiar feeling of Carmen pulling her closer brought a warmth throughout her and sent butterflies fluttering through her stomach and chest. It was as if nothing had changed between them in that moment. Everything was as it should be as their lips moved in unison. All at once Skylars surroundings came back to her and she could feel the people around her pushing past them. The music thumped loudly in her ears and the bass echoed in her chest. Carmen pulled away from her and skylar wondered for a moment if perhaps this was all a dream and she would wake up in Isaacs arms with tears running down her cheeks again. Such a beautiful dream, one that she had dreamt several times before. Each time it tore open her bleeding heart a little more.

This time it was real. This time Carmen asked Skylar if she wanted some air and lead her out the door of the club. Several people pushed past the duo as they exited the crowded building, none of them paid any attention to the girls, though. Skylar took a deep, clear breath as the cold air hit her lungs and her heart seemed to stop for a moment. Carmens hand slipped from hers and Skylar watched as Carmen leaned against the cold brick of the building. Sky couldn't hear anything but the ringing in her ears as she adjusted to the stark difference between the loud thuds in the club and the silence outside. Aside from the sound of people quietly talking and drunk people laughing there was no sound. Occasionally the club doors would open and the music burst out of the entrance but as the doors closed it went silent again. As the ringing stopped, Sky could hear Carmen speaking her name. It was a beautiful sound, hearing her name come from such an angels lips. How could one ever get used to that sound? How could anyone take it for granted like Skylar did before. Never again, Skylar vowed.

Skylar moved closer to Carmen as the girl admitted to her feelings. Confessing her pain through teary eyes. Skylars eyes teared up and she looked away when Carmens gaze met hers. Yes Sky had been the one to confront Carmen but what did she say now? How could they repair the damage that had been done? Skylars eyebrows furrowed slightly as her eyes once again met Carmens gaze. "I forgive you." Sky moved toward Carmen, "Carmen I love you. I don't ever want to lose you like that again. Its been torture, Carmen. You're my best friend. I want to be with you. I never wanted Isaac or Logan or anyone else but you." Skylar took Carmens hands in hers, "I know that you wont be with me because you're afraid of your parents. I can give you anything they could and more. Move in with me, Carmen. Don't tell them just grab some things and come live with me. We can find a place of our own in time but you can stay with me at my parents house until then." It was wishful thinking, of course. Skylar was reaching for something that was unlikely to happen and she knew it yet she had to try. If Carmen wasn't going to try for them then Skylar would do anything. If Carmen didn't want to work, Skylar would work harder. "Please. I don't want to lose you again. I love you"

The trip had been exhausting. A day of rest had been in order when she got back. Of course a rest day wasn't a full rest day if she didn't visit with Papa the moment she got back. The visit was pleasant and Papa thanked her for everything that she had done. Papa didn't know Isa but he could sense that Lavender cared for her and that was all that he cared about. Before Papa left he kissed her forehead and promised to visit again after Lavender had a good rest. After unpacking, Lav laid down and slept until the dawn of the next morning. She would have slept longer if it weren't for the familiar sound of Papa gently knocking at her door. Lav shot up out of bed, pulling her robe around her as she ran to answer the door. Papa bid her a good morning and announced that he would be waiting for her in his chambers at the Clergy House. Lavender nodded and waited for him to leave before quickly getting herself dressed. She pulled her clergy robes over her head and head out the door. The black robe was warm but airy enough that it wasn't uncomfortable for her to wear as she made her way to the Clergy House. As promised Papa was waiting for her in his chambers. Any official Clergy business was discussed in his chambers where he could take notes on the meeting. this particular meeting had to do with Wendall and his sisters initiation into the Clergy. what that would look like and what steps they were taking to ensure that Wendalls sisters were well taken care of as they made their transition. Papa also discussed with Lavender their plans to get Wendalls mother and step father to sign their rights to Wendall and Lavender. Lavender being in the agreement as she was the one who suggested they join the Clergy. Lav nodded as Papa spoke and thanked him for his time as she stood up to leave.

---

Lavender paced in her bedroom, wondering what the outcome of the meet up with Wendalls mother had come to. Papa had promised he would visit once they were done. Their plan was flawless and Lavender knew that Papa was very convincing when he needed to be. The girls had been to the Clergy House and had stayed the night in their own rooms. They seemed to be adjusting to their new life well yet still there was this worry in Lavenders heart that all wouldn't be well until Papa confirmed with her. Her heart skipped a beat when she heard the knock at her door and she rushed to answer it. Confusion hit her soul when instead of Papa at her door it was Wendall. He was a welcome surprise, of course, and Lavender was most happy to let him into her home. The moment the front door was closed, Lavender moved closer to Wendall, reaching out to him for his warm embrace. Instead of his gentle touch Wendall stepped away from her. In that moment her heart felt like it fell from her chest. Had something gone wrong?

And then Wendall spoke. It was worse. He knew. His words shot through her like a dagger through the heart. The world seemed to spin and the floor seemed to be a million miles away. Lav took a step backward, grabbing onto the wall beside her to steady herself. "Wendall I-" Warm tears pricked at her eyes and Lav wiped them away, "I didn't tell anybody why I came here." Curious eyes scanned the article that he had placed in front of her. Exposure of her secrets sprawled throughout the pages of the towns gossip column. Now what was she supposed to do? Beg for forgiveness? "Wendall I beg of you, please don't be upset. I didn't do anything. I was asleep when it happened please." She couldn't stop the tears now as they rolled down her cheeks. "I'm sorry." Lav moved closer, wanting to hold him but she could see the betrayal and hurt in his eyes. "My scars are not your burden to bear. I didn't want to bring you into this, please believe me. I promise I was going to tell you in due time I just... I don't want you to think differently of me."

Wendall looked away as he tries not to break down in tears. "Of course I know you didn't have anything to do with it! That's not the reason I'm upset!" He said strongly as he kept back away from her. He couldn't look her in the eyes. but he knew that he had to get what he was feeling out of his mind. He needed to tell her how he felt. "I am upset that you didn't think you could tell me. That you would think so low of me, to think I would think that you had anything to do with your mother's murder." He said strongly as he runs his hands through his hair. He looks her in the eyes. So she would truly understand the way he felt.

"I'm in love with you Lavender. I love the way you smile when you see my sisters running to you. I love the way you laugh at my corny jokes when they aren't funny. I love how gentle you are. I love how caring you are." He told her seriously. "I love you. And your scars are my burden to share. Everything that you want to burden on yourself, let me carry some of the weight. " He told her. Wendall never thought that he would find anyone like Lavender in this town. His life changed the moment, she gave him her number that one night in the bar. She changed his life, and he never wanted to go back to the lonely life he was living before. Before loving her. Before the clergy. Before he found the home he's been searching for.

"Nothing you could do or say would make me change my mind about you. Not some shit about your father. Not the rumors. Nothing. I will be here for you when the world crashes down on you. I will be there when you need someone to be." He now walked towards her and held her face in his hands. "You are my light. And you aren't going to lose me. Don't you know that?" He told her. She was his guiding life in the darkness. Now it was time for him to be hers. "You are not your father. You are not someone's news story. You are much more than what they call you in some dumb fucking paper." He held her eye contact to make sure that she knows that every word that he was saying came from his heart.

"You can trust me to carry some of the burden. You can trust me because I love you and there's no other place I will rather be than right here with you Lavender." He told her softly. As he kisses her forehand and leans his against hers. "You are my home." He whispers out as the tears fall down his eyes.

“A pretty name for a pretty lady.”

Tonight’s was going to be fun, Isaac could tell. Skylar was off doing god knows what, with god knows who but Isaac didn’t really care. His attention was fully focused on the beautiful lady sitting beside him as her chest brushed against his. Her perfume filled his nose as he smirked down at the pretty brunette, taking in her comment. He liked how forward she was, It told him she wasn’t looking for anything serious- just some fooling around.

Isaac stood, floored by Autumn. He had never been in the pretense of such a bold women before but he liked it. Isaac picked up his second shot, throwing his head back to let the burning liquid pool into his stomach before place the glass down with a small thud.

“Confident, are we? I’d moan your name anytime you’d like, autumn.” he put emphasis on her name for effect.

“How about we get out of here?” He could feel all the eyes on him and he wondered if Skylar was apart of them, witnessing how bold he was being by being so close to another female. It gave him the rush of adrenaline he so badly craved. Isaac’s eyes swept across the club patrons before returning to Autumn’s. He held out his hand.

“Come with me.” He knew exactly where to take her. There was a private lounge upstairs with his name written all over it. Like he said, tonight was going to be fun. He just hoped that Autumn was down to be his latest conquest, but by the way Autumn was practically undressing him with her eyes told him that she was ready and willing to see where the night would take them.

A storm of emotions swirled inside of Carmen, confusing her- making her anxious and sick to her stomach. She knew how strong Skylar felt for her but how could she ever give up the comfortable life her parents provided for her? Was it even all that comfortable if she couldn’t truly be herself? A million questions clouded her mind but there was one thing she wasn’t confused about. She loved Skylar, with all of her heart. She knew couldn’t live without her and these last few months were evidence of that.

Move in with me, Carmen.

The tears kept coming, she couldn’t stop them from smearing her mascara all over her cheeks. Could it really be that easy? Everything Carmen wanted was being held out to her on a silver platter but she still felt confused. How could she go on without her parents support?

“I-i… I love you too.” She replied. She didn’t know what else to say, she was at loss for words but she knew she loved Skylar. The red head pulled Skylar into a warm embrace, clinging on the girl like she was going to disappear at any second. She didn’t want to lose her again, but did that mean she was going to lose her parents? Yes, she couldn’t have both. Her parents would never accept her for who she is.

“Okay..” she mumbled, uncertain.

“I’ll move in with you.” She pulled away, placing her lips to Skylar’s, savoring her taste for a few moments before pulling a away again.

“We can go get some stuff tonight? I’ll tell my parents tomorrow, I’m not emotionally ready tonight.” A small part of her was excited to be able to hold Skylar close but another part of her was terrified for what was about to happen.

Lavender couldn’t breathe.

This was not the way Wendall was supposed to find out about her family. Of course the secret was going to come out eventually, she had just hoped she would have been able to sit him down with Papa and tell him herself rather than finding out from a ridiculous news article that didn’t have all of the facts. Knowing her past was exposed now, Lav just wanted to run away and hide.

As Wendall spoke, Lavender slowly dropped her gaze. Tears rolled down her cheeks and she couldn’t bring herself to lift her chin. At the end of the day she should have told Wendall the truth and she knew it. There was nothing left for her to say, nothing that she could do that could repair the damage that had been done. Then his tone shifted. As if he was reassuring her that despite this betrayal he still loved her. Lavender's eyebrows furrowed slightly as confusion hit her. How could he still love her and want to be with her after she held such a secret from him?

His warm hands touched her cheeks as he lifted her head and looked into her eyes. Lavender could see that Wendall, too, was crying. He was hurt and she couldn’t blame him. “I don’t think poorly of you.” Her words were quiet. Really it was all she could muster beyond the lump in her throat. “I just wasn’t ready. I was going to tell you, I promise. I just…” Lavender gently pulled from his grasp. Wendall was true to his word, she knew it, she knew that he did love her but there was still this nagging feeling in her bones that he would look at her differently or wonder if maybe she wasn’t who she said she was. Just like every relationship before him, once they found out the truth there was no going back.

“I’m not ready for you to look at me like I’m a monster. Or wonder if the rumours are true any time I’m upset.” She leaned against the wall in the hall as she spoke, wiping the tears from her cheeks. “I’m in love with you.” Lav said almost matter of factly, “That's why I gave you a home in the Clergy. So when my father is out of jail I can run or hide without worrying whether you’re going to be okay and we can find each other again.”

Anxiety flooded through her.

How could she ask something so big from Carmen so soon? Sure they had been kind of together for a while but moving in? Skylar was ready but she wasn’t very convinced that Carmen would be. She lived off of her parents. They gave her every luxury they could and absolutely spoiled her. Yeah Sky could spoil Carmen too but it would be different. Skylar took a deep breath, trying to convince herself that this was a good idea and that everything would be fine. Even if Carmen said no, they would be fine.

Skylar wiped the tears from Carmen's cheeks and smiled softly at her as Carmen told her she loved her. There was no reluctance from Sky as Carmen pulled her close. If anything it was a welcome gesture that Sky had missed so much. There were so many things about Carmen that Skylar has missed, not just their bedroom activities. Everything about Carmen drew Skylar in. From her intoxicating scent to her shimmering eyes, Skylar was smitten and always had been. Even if Carmen said no Skylar knew she would still love her.

Carmen didn’t wait for even a moment to let Skylar react before she placed her lips on Skys. Fireworks went off in her mind and shock pushed away the anxiety that had been ripping through her mind. Did she just say yes? She must have since Carmen was now asking to go get some of her things. All Skylar could do was nod. “Yes. Yes, absolutely let's go. We can go right now. We will have to take your car.” Excitement bubbled through her. Her dreams were finally coming true. They would finally be able to try an actual relationship. A real relationship where they don’t have to hide from the world. Of course there would be the issue of Carmen's parents but that was something they could handle together. Ideas were already forming in Skylars mind about how they would tell Carmen's parents about her moving out and how to handle their reactions. None of that mattered quite yet, though. The most important thing now was going through with the plan and getting Carmen comfortable in Sky's home.

Skylar took Carmen's hand and led her to the parking lot, waiting for Carmen to take her to her car. “Don’t worry about your parents for now. We can tell them after we get you all settled in and we can replace anything you might leave behind.” Skylar kissed Carmen’s cheek, “Oh I love you so much. Everything is going to be okay.” The girls head toward Carmens car and as they walked, Sky started forming a plan. What they were going to take and where they were going to put it in her house. Sky would have to move some of her things around so there was room for Carmen to store her things until they moved. The guest bedroom would be a fine place to put things for now. That and Evers room. since Everest now had her own place there was no need to keep things immaculate for her anymore.

Wendell shook his head as she went on. She was hearing him but wasn’t listening to what he was saying. “Lavender, I would never think that. I don’t think you are your father.” He walks to her on the wall and held her hand. ”And you won’t have to hide or run, you have a whole family here that would protect you if they need to. You really think Isa or me would just let you go without a fight. We love you.” He tells her trying to show her that she does still have a family. The family that wouldn’t make the choices that would hurt her.

She belonged right here with them. This was her home. ”I love you. That means I love you without demands. I love you throughout your hardship, I love you with every breath I take. “ Wendell looked at their hands intertwined and smiles softly at it. Even with the tears running down both their faces. He found calm in the middle of the storm in her touch. He found warmth and light even if the world was cold and dark. ”You love me and I love you, and that’s all that matters. Don’t you see that?” He shook his head. She was so in the dark, that she couldn’t see the light. The light in her life.

”Are you really just going to leave behind Isa, the girl that would go to the ends of the earth for you. She depends on you to keep her strong in the storm and you depend on her to be there when you fall. You guys bond is stronger then anything I’ve seen.” He asks her as she looks down at the ground and doesn’t meet his eyes. The way she won’t look him in the eyes tells him what he had known from the beginning. She doesn’t believe that anyone would stay after hearing the truth. Why she had hid the truth from the town, from everyone, from him. She was afraid they would run away from her when her past came into the open.

”I want you to really listen to me, and hear me. Hear what I am saying. “ He uses his one free hand that wasn’t gripping on her hand like a lifeline. To wipe the tears from her eyes and have her look at him as he begins to tell her what she needed to hear. ”The clergy is amazing, and I’m so happy you shown me a place where I can belong but they are not my home. My home isn’t a group of people or a place. My home has beautiful brown hair. The most amazing green eyes. A sweet smile. And a warmth and light that can guide me out of the darkest of places. “

”You are my home. I would follow you through the pits of fucking hell if that means I get to hold you, I get to love you, I get to be with you. “ Wendell sighed as he tries to tell her. To show her that she was the place that he called home. ”I love you, that means if you have to run and hide which you definitely don’t because I’m pretty much sure that Isa would kill him before he even could touch you but I would come with you. My sisters are more then enough protected under the clergy, they would be happy there. But I wouldn’t be…not without you by my side.”

Wendell did the last thing that he thought would reach her. If his words won’t reach then maybe he needs to show her how much he truly loved her. How much he would go to protect her, to be there for her. He kisses her softly. Even with the tears coming down both of their faces. He found his calm in her.

He found his home in her warmth.

Blu noticed the fake smile right off the bat. How could she not? It was so familiar. The way she used to fake a smile to her dick of a father, and her bitch of a stepmother. When they told her that they just wanted the best for her. What a load of bullshit, the best they wanted wasn't the best for her. The memories of the times, she cried herself to sleep because it was another night that she wasn't with her true family. The family now hated her for leaving them behind. She only wished that they saw that she didn't have a choice, it was the only way to protect them. To protect her baby sister from a life where she had to go home to home. Where they could be separated. She didn't want that to happen so she made a deal. A dealt with the devil and because of it, she lost the only family that she loved. She was lost in her thoughts she only shook out of it as Della started to move to the living room.

"I didn't really celebrate Halloween. My stepmother and father thought it was the way into the devil's soul or some crap like that." She told her as she sat down beside her and Del draped the duvet across both of them. "I usually snuck out and got as much candy as I could and then hid it from them. I would at least have a full two months supply of delicious sugary sweet treats. " She told her smiling softly. As she takes some chips and eats them. She watched as Della scrolls through the options.

Blu watches as she picks the first Halloween movie. Stated that she wanted to catch up on the old ones before seeing the new one "Are you sure this is really scary? " She asks but she just wanted as she cuddled up to the pillow. And soon enough she found out that Del was definitely scared of scary movies.

She watched as she finched and hid in the pillows until she finally ended up burying her face into Blu's shoulder. Blu held strong as she watched as the girl buried her face into her shoulder and she couldn't help but smile. She was fucking adorable. The butterflies that she thought died a long time ago, started to flutter in her chest. And the feeling of falling was coming around. And Blu for the first time since leaving the home that was hell, didn't block it out.

She couldn't. Blu should have been watching the movie, but she couldn't take her eyes off of the human that gave her a warmth like none before. The movie ended not that she noticed. That's when she noticed how close they were. "I don't mind actually. At least you have a place to hide your face in." She said softly. She watched as she left and came back with ice cream.

"Maybe keep the Halloween theme. Number two? And don't worry, you can hide in my shoulder. The personal space rule I have doesn't apply to you." She told her as she patted the seat next to her. Blu knew that she should have talked to her about the background check but she couldn't. She didn't want to break the feeling that she was feeling. She was feeling alive for the first time in her life for a long time.

    Della just..brought out her humanity.

Words escaped her.

Lavender could tell that Wendall was trying to reassure her that everything would be okay but the darkness inside her heart had already taken control. Empty tears rolled down her cheeks and she could feel herself wanting to withdraw from Wendall. What a stupid idea to fall in love with someone. How could she have ever thought that getting into a relationship was a good idea? Another broken heart to put on the shelf.

But Wendall didn’t recoil from her touch like she expected him to. Instead he intertwined their fingers and moved closer to her, telling her to really listen to what he had to say. Lavender's eyes met his as he wiped a tear from her cheek, her focus flipping from eye to eye as he spoke. It was almost like he was speaking a language she didn’t know as he tried to explain to her how he felt. Wendall brought up how hard Isa would fight for her and how Lavender didn’t have to run because she had people who loved her. It was warming, truly, but it didn’t change her mind. If anything it made her want to flee more. Lavender never intended on pulling them into the mess that was her life.

Then he kissed her. Wendalls lips were soft and gentle as they pressed up against hers. She could taste the saltiness of his tears from his kiss. Confusion once again hit her like a truck and her heart fluttered. Lavender wanted nothing more than to pull Wendall closer and hold him tight, but that aching feeling in her was still uncertain. After a moment she pulled away and stepped back until her back was against the wall and there was nowhere else to go.

“I can’t. I’m sorry I just… You’re saying all of the right things but I just have this feeling that you’re going to leave. Maybe not today or tomorrow but someday down the line when all of this becomes too much for you.” Lavender's gaze was unwavering even when she had moved away her eyes were set on his.

“When the staring becomes too much for you or the death threats start coming in the mail because the people who think I killed my mother and framed my father found out where I live, you’ll leave. On the anniversary of her death, when I have to walk through crowds of people who hate me just to put flowers on her grave, you’ll wonder whether they are right about me. Or god forbid we get into an argument and you feel like you have to sleep with one eye open because my father still tells the story like I was the one who did it and it makes you wonder. I can’t live with the fear that you’re going to leave.”

Lavender shook her head, “You say you love me and want to be with me and I want the same but…some day you’ll change your mind. And I’ll be left behind again. Longing for you forever.” Lavender wrapped her arms around herself. She had spoken all of the feelings of her heart.

    Wendall Young

Wendell couldn't see how she could ignore the facts in front of her. The fact that he was there, and pleading with her to stay here with him. With the family, she had created bonds that would go through the strongest of fires and never break. She had already created herself the family she had so craved for the years that she was alone, and even with the clergy lost in her own darkness. He watches as she backs away from him yet again. He looked her straight in the eye as she told him that she knew that somehow at a time in the future that he was going to leave her. He shook his head as she tries to tell him of a future that would never happen.

"All of what Lavender?" He told her softly. "All of this complete and utter bullshit? You are making my damn choice for me, and I am so fucking tired of people doing that. This isn't what is best for me! Why don't you see that?" He all but shouted at her. He never raised his voice at her but the anger behind his voice was clear and heard.

"My goddamn stepfather bullies me and completely undermines my every move. Everything I do is never enough for him. He treats me like complete shit. My real father never even spared me a second look as he dines with the riches and have twin daughters I have never met! But I see them every day, and I want to talk to them, let them know I'm here!" Wendall told her as he tries to show her that nothing could ever make him leave. The life he lead before her wasn't as bad as her but it was just as broken as her past.

Wendall sighed as he looks at her. "I don't give a flying shit about what story your father tells to everyone. I don't give a shit about the staring. I don't give a shit about the death threats or the whispers. I will push all the goddamn people away and help you place the flowers on her grave. " He told her as he walks closer to her, making sure that he didn't let her be able to escape him. He was tired of this cat-and-mouse game she was playing. He was tired of her not hearing what he was telling her as the truth.

Loving Lavender was something that he could never regret. Loving her was as easy as breathing. Loving her was something he never could stop doing it. She doesn't see it yet but he will show her. Through his actions. Through his words. Through his every breath. Because that's what it is to love someone, you love them through their broken times and their lost moments. You are their shining light when they can only see the darkness ahead.

Once he made sure that she couldn't move away from him. Wendall looks at her in the eyes. "The only fucking thing I care about right now is the fact that the girl I love doesn't see that I would burn the world for her if she needs me to. That I would walk through hell and whatever fucking shit is in my way to get to her. That she is worth every fucking stare, every whisper, and whatever fucking shit that people throw at me." He told her as she looked at him in the eyes.

"I know you will never hurt me. I know whatever argument that we might have, we will work it out and fall asleep in each other's arms. Because what your father did, wasn't love but what we have, is love Lavender. I'm not leaving you. I will never leave you." He tells her as he cups her cheeks wiping the tears from her eyes. "I would get down on one knee right now, and ask you to marry me. I just need to get permission from Papa first. " He said chuckling.

"But don't you see?" Wendall tells her. "The love I have means I can see through the scars inside you" He tells her like she told him on the first date they had. "And I love every fucking scar you have. So let me love you...please?" He tells her pleading with her.

Pleading with her to let her be loved by all the people that loved her.

The family that would never leave her.

Wendall never raised his voice at her.

Yet there he was, arguing with her about whether he loves her through her trauma or not. To be honest it was an argument Lavender never thought that she would have with someone. Really she never thought she would find someone who loved her other than Isa and Papa. Wendall's words were so kind and she could feel her heart fluttering with every step he took closer to her until he was so close she couldn’t move away from him.

It was a surprise to hear about all of Wendall's troubles. She knew a little bit about it, of course, but she didn’t know the whole truth. She wondered who his twin sisters were and if she had ever seen them around town. Probably not. Lavender didn’t really go out too much. Anything to avoid the possibility of someone recognizing her from a news article. It was selfish of her to do so, really. It was just the way of the Clergy, though, they had everything they needed.

Her heart jumped when Wendall mentioned marriage. She had never really thought about it before but at that moment she seemed to know the answer. She also knew what Papa would say to Wendall if he did ask him. Lavender already knew that she would be the next Sister Imperator if something were to happen. Perhaps if they got married that would make Wendall the new Papa. Papa didn’t have any children of his own and basically adopted Lavender. Yes the bloodline would be broken but in this day and age who really cared.

Then Wendall said those words. The words that meant so much to her. She had said them on their first date just the same as Papa had said when she was joining the Clergy. In that moment Lavender broke down, she buried her face in Wendalls chest and just cried. She had no words, not that she could get them out anyway.

“I love you,” she finally spoke after her tears had died down a little. “I’m sorry.

Wendell sighed in relief as Lavender finally saw what he's been telling her all along. That she had a family here that was all going to make sure that she was protected and loved even if that means going against the world in front of them. "I love you. Please hear me when I tell you that I'm not going anywhere. We aren't going anywhere. Not without you." He tells her as he holds her tightly almost afraid to let her go.

Afraid that if he did, she would go away just like she said she would if her father were to find her. "Just stay. I don't need apologies. I don't need anything but you." He tells her as he rests his chin on her head. Wendall closes his eyes and the tears start to flow as the thought of a life without Lavender came to his mind. "I just need you to stay. We all need you to stay. I don't give a damn if your father comes. I will make sure you stay safe, Papa will make sure you stay safe, Isa will make sure you stay safe but you have to trust us. You have to let us protect you for once." He says through the tears.

"You've been protecting us from yourself this entire time but what if that isn't what we wanted." Wendall raises her face to meet his. "What if what we want, is to stay by your side? Throughout all the hardship, and the pain. What if we just want to be the ones helping, living, and enjoying life with you?" He sighed as he wiped the tears by the her eyes. David Bowie

Let's Dance

Francisco’s day had been nothing out of the ordinary. He woke at six, swam until seven, ate scrambled eggs with tomato out on the back patio for breakfast, then headed into town mid-morning to meet a new client. He took it easy now he was in Florida; think of it as early retirement. He enjoyed his work too much to stop altogether, instead just doing enough to keep him going. Architecture was as much a hobby for Cisco as it was a career.

There was one guy Cisco was introduced to a few months back; Avi Faust, infamous rockstar that first made a name for himself in Rosemary Beach. From what Cisco had learned, Avi made a living on tour, returning to town to see his family when he could. Word said Avi was looking to build a new place near the beach front, not two lots down from Cisco. He approached Avi directly, made him a reasonable offer for his services, and the two of them shook hands.

Cisco had gotten to know the Fausts as good acquaintances. They had a daughter, Scarlett. They’d met only once, in Avi’s kitchen while the men were drinking whiskey and looking over the plans for the new house. She had breezed in, pecked her father on the cheek, and quickly introduced herself. Cisco had taken a moment to breathe in the sight of her; full lips, bronzed bare shoulders and a tiny waist. He greeted her with a genuine smile and keen, wide eyes, extending his hand. She shook it, smiling politely, then left out of the back door with car keys jingling in her hand, long hair floating behind her.

She had crept into Cisco’s mind several times since then. Always when he least expected it; in the middle of a long phone call, or arduous meeting; sometimes while he was pouring himself a drink or jogging down the beach. They had exchanged barely five words to each other, yet the image of those piercing green eyes gazing out from thick eyelashes and darkened lids wouldn’t let him stray.

There wasn’t much he could do. Maybe if he was lucky, he would bump into her downtown or on the promenade. Perhaps he could make an excuse to see Avi, if he was still in town?

He tried to shake it off. God, what man got so easily transfixed on a woman before even one conversation? He had never known himself to be so overcome so easily. He set his mind on other things.

It didn’t take long. To his pleasure, Scarlett reached out. Avi had passed her Cisco’s number, after Cisco could only imagine Scarlett had asked for it. He was surprised Avi had handed it over so willingly; most fathers might be concerned about what interest their 20-something daughter had with a man twice her age – yet, it didn’t bother Cisco enough to stop him from responding.

They would meet at Club Euphoria, a place Cisco was well acquainted with. Him and a couple of friends frequently took a booth with a bottle of champagne on the weekend, but tonight would be a little different. It was Halloween, and Cisco would be arriving to the club alone.

It was mid-evening when Cisco started to get ready. He hadn’t thought of a new costume for this year, but had 50 distinguishable shirt and tie combinations at his disposal. Paired with a long translucent overcoat, slicked back hair, and a generous lashing of fake blood, Cisco was the perfect Patrick Bateman rip-off. He grabbed a spare jacket for Zuri on the way out, with feelings of apprehension for the amount of skin on show in her recent photos.

The club was brimming with folks when he arrived. He handed the keys of his Range Rover over to the valet, skimming straight passed the queueing revellers with a chirpy greeting to the doorman. Inside, the bass pounded through the floor and lights swooped overhead. He made his way through the crowd, pushing between the dancing bodies until he reached the bar. To his left sat Scarlett.

“Oh my - cariño,” he exclaimed with a hearty smile, putting a gentle hand on Scarlett’s shoulder as he greeted her with a light kiss on the cheek, her perfume almost bowling him over. “You look fantastic, absolutely beautiful. Let me get you a drink. I won’t take no for an answer.”
