The First Trial

It was a dark and gloomy night for the ascended guardians, protectors of humanity. They lived atop earth, clouds serving as foundations for their celestial castle, invisible to the human eye. Ruling them all was the Jade Emperor, the absolute ruler of the heavens. The heavens were troubled. They lost their heavenly shine, little by little, slowly but surely. Evil was going to leak in the world once again. As the guardians grew older and older, their power to counter evil had weakened, so it was time to select new guardians. The Game will be played. And yet, the guardians' powers were running out faster than usual; a bad omen for the heavens.

Maybe the heavens were too rash. But desperate times, called for desperate measures. The Earth and the Heavens were getting separated too quickly-- when evil appears, it always tries to sever the bond between humanity and its protectors. Worst case scenario, when it is severed, then humanity will be wiped from the very face of earth. This is why, though their activities are hidden to normal people, the guardians are needed. They were, like the foundation to a skyscraper, like a shell to a turtle, the only ones who could protect humanity. Golden letters were sent to the new Players. They were to succeed their trials, and to win their title as guardians.

The Present Guardians were diverse. They were good, yet they were bad. They were wise, yet rash. They were kind, yet they were unloving. Together they were everything. They were of ancient people, yet their bodies were not. Some had special powers. By channeling their guardian deity, Rat, Ox, Dragon or the other animals, they were able to surpass human limits, performing tasks that were seemingly impossible to do for normal humans. They balanced the flow within good and bad, yet they could not eradicate evil completely.

For the last twelve thousand years, they were not able to.

The source of evil proves not to be from the outside, but from the inside. The Jade Emperor is there because of people's wishes. The same also applies for evil. Born from people's thoughts, evil is commonly referred to by the heavens as The Old One. He was born from people's darkest wishes. He could not be seen, but he was there. He was not alive, nor was he dead. He was not human, nor was he a god. That, is The Old One. Overwhelmed by greed, The Old One wanted to rule the world, but The Jade Emperor did not allow him to do so. Like a child throwing a tantrum, The Old One wanted to destroy humanity by using his powers. He caused disasters everywhere. Tsunamis. Earthquakes. Tornadoes. The so called natural disasters weren't so natural, after all. And yet, humanity held on. Many died, but more lived. The Old One had given up trying to destroy humanity from the outside. Instead, he sought to destroy humanity from the inside.

Fearing that he could not suppress The Old One's powers any longer, The Jade Emperor called in the best of the best to protect humanity. They were sentient, but took the form of animals. Together, they shone and brought together the power of hope, to counter The Old One. His plans were thwarted, and he was defeated. He was defeated, but he lived on. He is immortal, for he is born from people's wishes. He tried and tried, but was thwarted. Now, The Old One had found a new strategy: to suck away the guardians' magic.

Magic was a limited resource. One could say it was similar to wi-fi bandwidth. It could not perpetually be used, for it is limited. Now, The Old One has gathered his believers, who calls themselves Arkhaios. They believed that, for a new, revolutionary world, the current world had to be sacrificed. The Old One promised them power and riches, and they followed him. He granted them the ability to use magic, and advised them to abuse it. Now, when magic is slowly dissipating and the heavens is in chaos, it is the new players' turn, to solve the puzzles ahead of them, and succeed the guardians' throne, before all is late and humanity is consumed with evil.

-----------

Below the letters that every player received, a sentence would come into vision.

First, gather with the fellow players, in the place where the gladiators of ancient Rome would fight.

Marcus had a strange feeling to look at his letter again. When he saw that is said to meet up where the ancient romans fought in he instantly knew it was the coliseum. Marcus looked at his phone, and he saw it said 9:25 am. "Well if I leave now I can make it there by 1:25 on my motorcycle." So Marcus packed an duffle bag with some clothes, and started driving towards The Roman Coliseum. 'I wonder what the other protectors are going to be like. I hope some are my age. It would be weird if they were all older than me.

"Gladiators of ancient Rome? The Colosseum?" she read aloud, drawing links in her head. The previous excitement from having being selected faded into plain disbelief. "Do they expect me to just up and leave for Rome? For god's sake, I have a brother missing, possibly kidnapped and held hostage in Kalimantan or something and I'm just supposed to pop off? What would my parents say?"

Well, cheers for humanity's survival, because her parents were incredibly honoured that their daughter had been chosen. Which parent wouldn't be? "Genevieve, sweetie! We are
so proud of you! Go, now, your father's already booked a ticket while we were talking!" Her mother gushed, clapping her hands together for what must've been the 5th time during the span of that conversation. "Wait, what?" Gen asked as her mother gently forced pushed her back into her room.

"Go get ready, love!"

"No, wait, what about Adri-"

"We've already got tons of people looking for him, you're not going to be able to do much sitting around here, are you!"

Well, she couldn't argue with that. "You're absolutely, hundred percent sure you're okay with this?" Gen asked her mother one more time, to which she got an enthusiastic nod in reply. Plastering on a smile, she thanked her mother and closed the door shut behind her as she stuffed some of her clothes into her bag. Her mind was flooded with images and ideas of what the other chosen people she'd meet would be like. This whole thing was just so... surreal. Like she was a main character of some crazy fantasy story. (Yes, obviously not, Genevieve, dear) She wondered if they would be fun and interesting- she'd better bring some first-greeting pranks. Her imagination ran wild as she tossed a stuffed monkey into the luggage, slamming it shut shortly afterwards, popping her daydream bubble as well.

Fast forward an hour or so later, Gen's sitting in the first class suite in a plane heading for Rome, her carry-on nestled on her lap as she watched a horror movie on the airplane TV screen. Nothing like a good ol' horror movie to rev you up more for meeting new people, right? As a jumpscare popped up yet again, she giggled lightly at both the scare and the thought of doing this. It was so
exciting! The little lightbulb was literally beaming with joy. The protectors got powers too, she'd heard from her grandfather once, maybe with those powers she could find her brother or something. That would be a nice side effect to having crazy awesome new powers. She posted a selfie of herself on her Snapchat story just as the movie ended, slid on her (super-cute!) panda eyemask and it wasn't long before her breathing melted into a gentle snore.

This scene being set in a big wooden house, somewhere in a big forest of Russians Siberia.

'Well, well, well' stated Katherine pulling on her gun, so it made a sound, which told the man sitting in the chair that the gun is loaded.

'I didn't do anything! Peter rammed in and broke the deal!' The male pulled on his ropes. Yep, this poor male, probably named Grigoriy, was bound onto a wooden chair. Except him, the room looked rather comforting. Tall ceilings, the walls covered in wood, paintings of famous Russian artists, which were probably stolen by the mafia once. In the fireplace there was a calm fire, the wood made little cracking sounds. Katherine looked into the big window by the fireplace, she'd sigh. Outside everything would be covered in snow, the sun was slowly setting.

'Sunshine, where was your mind when he did that? I thought we can trust you. You disrespected your family.'

She'd walk up to the male and bend down, looking at him square in the eye and sigh again with an emotionless tired look.

'Please! I have a family! My children are waiting for me!'

The male screamed, almost spitting into her face. Katherine looked at him with disgust now. She pulled her gun up, pushing it to the males head. Her cold gray eyes looked into his.

'What a pity..'

She'd stretch her back and look away as her finger presses the trigger and the bullet goes through the males head. Leaving blood stains on the perfect persedian carpet. She wouldn't turn her head to look at the male. After she slowly put her gun down, two males walked inside. She'd nod at them and walk out of the room in the big foyer. Katherine put her gun in her belt and walk to the enormous stairs going to the third floor.

Soon she walked into her room and let herself fall onto her king sized bed. Something made her open the golden envelope again. Katherine wouldn't notice anything new at first but then she'd notice other words..

'Strange..'

She'd read them out loud and then realize that she has to meet other players at the colosseum.

-2 days later-

Katherine, having a bodyguard by her side, who carried her bags, walked out of the airport of Rome. She had sunglasses on her nose. Her body was covered with black jeans, black sweater and her black boots. She looked rather dangerous with this male.

'Mihail, I'm tired, let's get to the mansion'

She hadn't to say it twice, her bodyguard brought her to the mansion and she had a chance to relax.

Katherine decided to visit the colosseum only the next day...

Sangwoo hadn't exactly expected that he'd be forced onto a plane heading for Rome this late at night. He hadn't expected having to be on a plane at all, actually. In the commotion that was his family celebrating being chosen, his parents had apparently booked him a red-eye flight to Rome, meaning that they had read over his shoulder while he had scanned over the letter. He definitely hadn't expected this. His shock and obvious protest did nothing as he was practically pushed through the airport by his parents, and before he know it he was boarding. He was sure it was going to be a long flight, as he had to go practically half way around the world. Anxious and fearful thoughts ran around his head as he went onto the plane, looking for his seat. He was never too fond of planes, and now that he was going on one alone, it just seemed that everything was happening too fast.

Before he knew it, the plane was moving, and eventually it began rising. He had always been scared of heights, and since he could see the bones in his knuckles as he tightly held on for dear life onto his armrests, the fear wasn't going away any time soon. He muttered a curse under his breath as he saw the ground get farther and farther away from him out of the window. Why wasn't Rome available by train? That'd be a much more favorable option.

He assumed that the race would force him to face more of his fears, and this would just be an introduction to it. There was no way the race wouldn't have some danger to it. That would be ridiculous. With this realization, he attempted to let go of his nerves. He pulled down the blind for his window, not letting himself glance out in terror. At least the man seated next to him wouldn't witness his cowardice as he nearly squeaked with every lurch of the plane. His neighbor was passed out, obviously tired. It'd be a good idea to follow in the man's footsteps to try and speed up the flight process, but just as he closed his eyes, the plane's speakers announced,
"Please buckle your seat belts, there'll be a bit of turbulence ahead."

This would be a long flight.

After a grueling few hours of sleep-deprived flying, Sangwoo landed in Rome, almost forgetting to get his bags on his way out of the airport. Rubbing his eyes drearily, he checked his phone, looking up,
'ruins of colosseum, Rome' and following the directions. He hoped that his unspecific question lead him to the correct place. After a bit of walking, he reached the colosseum, looking around tiredly. It sure seemed like the place described in the letter. He began to walk into the old building, trying his luck.

Marcus sped down the highway that led to Rome. He was very familiar with the trip because of his constant trips here. Marcus pulled to an intersection. "Well I can either take a left and follow the highway which will take me another hour to get there, or I can go right and get there in thirty minutes while being able to make it fun. Well right it is." Marcus revved the engine and the bike spun in a circle then shot towards the right of the intersection. Marcus was feeling weightless right now. With the bug jumps, and the drop offs. Marcus eventually arrived in Rome, and slowly made his way to the Coliseum. He rode his bike into it, but slowed to a stop when he got to the side of the actual battle field.

Her family sent her off as if they are sending a man to Mars, the first one that's going to arrive there and plant the nation's flag and pose for a commemoration picture. There's was a huge sendoff party, where her parents practically gather all relatives they could gather. From some village near North Korea's border to from Singapore, then cousins from Indonesia and Europe, and even great great grandmother from Zhao family's hometown in Guangdong. They said that she is 'off' to a great journey, without giving much detail. Her aunt thought that she's going for an internship in Europe, her uncle thought that she's going to marry a rich European.

The next day, her family accompany her to the airport. Her parents both cried, Ai's their only child after all. But really, all these farewell are emotionally exhausting. When her plane took off, she finally got some breathing room. She asked for some white wine and peanuts, and then spent two or three hours watching movie before spending the rest of the journey sleeping.

When she stepped off in Rome, she hopped into a taxi, who then dropped her off in front of the grand colosseum. She visited this place two years ago, in a vacation with her family. Who would've expected that she will come here again as the so-called 'protector of humanity'?

She took a deep breath and walked inside carrying her a small luggage and a small bag where she kept her twin hook blades.

Marcus took out his headphones when he noticed two more people enter the Coliseum. He hopped of of his bike and walked towards them. "So I am going to assume you guys are two of the protectors??" Marcus said this as he got closer to them and smiled. He wanted to make a good impression on them if he might be their leader.

@too much idea @LastRomeo

Protectors. It still sounded weird and foreign to her. She's not a soldier, neither a knight nor a warrior. Just a lonely girl who studies international relations, and here she is forced to... what? Put her life in the line to protect what might not be worth protecting?

"Maybe." Is the answer Ai gave the boy, an honest reply as she have not decided whether to be one or not.

@AnarchyReins

That really wasn't the answer I was looking for. Though what could I expect, you guys probably haven't had the same background that I have. On the bright side it seems like I am the youngest one here. This may get awkward if I am to be the leader." Marcus started to laugh a little bit. "Oh how rude of me. Hi my name is Marcus what is your's." Marcus said this with a genuine smile, and with a calculating look in his eyes.

@too much idea

Sangwoo reached the grounds of the colosseum in a short amount of time. This didn't means that his whole body was tired, as he'd only gotten around 15 minutes of sleep on that overly shaky plane. He stretched and yawned, blinking a little before noticing the two others inside the building. A tired smile appeared on his face, wanting to seem polite to these strangers. He assumed that they had received the same letter he had back home. He tried not to think of home, homesickness wasn't the best thing he could have currently.

The boy started the conversation, confirming his assumption about both of them. He asked if they were protectors. The word and title still seemed a little odd to him. Yes, he technically was, according to the letter. Right now though, he didn't feel any more special than he was before the letter had shown itself.
"I guess I am. Don't really feel like one, but according to the letter I'm something special like that," He shrugged, answering the boys question. The girl seemed just as confused as he was, saying something skeptically and shortly. He decided to place his bags on the ground, his arms beginning to tire.

Katherine arrived near the colosseum in a black sedan. The door was opened for her by her guard. She'd nod to Mihail and look around, seeing a bunch of tourists.

'Mihail, be ready. I don't know what will happen inside this place. Maybe we'll have to use our guns.'

Katherine put her sunglasses on and start moving to the colosseum. In her head she imagined a bunch of people from high society. She thought that she's going to be the youngest. You can't let small kids protect humanity. It's a big deal. As she walks, she'd mark some places she'd like to visit. Soon she walked into the colosseum, looking rather unfriendly with her 6'6 tall body guard. Katherine got nervous but then... She heard two 'kids' some way fighting. Her eyes would widen in shock when she saw them. Half of them were Asian, one was European. As she stand by the wall, she slowly looked up at Mihail. He raised her eyebrow, Katherine knew, he had a small shock too. She'd slowly approach these teenagers and cross her arms. Katherine would cough to gain attention.

'You arrived here to play in this sand box, kids?'

Sangwoo took a breath, not wanting to say anything rude to the younger boy. He seemed a bit arrogant, automatically assuming that he'd be the leader. Who'd put someone so young, and possibly so full of himself in a position of leadership? Hopefully not whoever sent out the letter. He didn't say anything in response, letting silence fall for a moment before another woman entered. She practically exuded royalty, or some other form of authority. It didn't help that she was accompanied by a quite frightening bodyguard. He was about to smile and greet her before he heard what she had said. All traces of the smile he was mustering up faded.

"Are you intimidated that so many people younger than you are qualified for this job? Don't be so rude," He sneered, a dislike for the woman beginning to grow. It was insulting that she couldn't take them seriously, when this was an obviously serious task that they were assigned. He knew that his statement was probably made in hasty poor judgement, and he shouldn't have tried to provoke the woman, but it didn't bother him right now.

@Taiga

I didn't expect answers like that from both of you." Marcus saw the a girl and her body guard come into the Coliseum. "You do know that body guard of yours can't do anything against the evil right Protector." Marcus was getting somewhat agitated because he thought he would get some people who were serious about being a Protector. "I'm not trying to be an ass or anything, but if we can't be somewhat serious, about this then whats to point of being a Protector?" Marcus asked as he went back to his bike and put his swords on his back.

Katherine would slowly approach the Asian young male. She'd look closer at him and smirk. She was one of the people who had respect for the ones who could stand against humiliation.

'Maybe my state is wrong. You see, I grew up in society where young people have no vote. You have to show your abilities in order to gain status, sunshine.'

Every step Katherine made was followed by her guard, she looked at the other young male who seemed to be arrogant and silly. She'd take a look at her guard and think about the evil he said. Katherine would take a step away from the others. She'd pull out her colt and point it at the male on the bike.

'You'll have to learn many many things, boy. You can not fight the evil when you can't protect against the smallest evil. Right now I'm pointing my gun at you. The bullet will travel in your body in a second. The truth is that no one will protect you. I see you have a sword. You won't be as quick as the bullet. Do you understand now? I have enough status and power to get protection. I can fight the bigger evil when I'm protected from the smaller evil.' Her sight would seem cold as she holds her gun straight, her arm wouldn't even flinch. Soon she'd slowly put her gun down, hoping he understood her. She'd then turn to the others. Katherine would wait for any reaction..

"I could care less if you shot me. I am expendable as long as my other teammates can get the job done. Though bullets can only go in certain directions of which the shooters choose. So really you would have to think of the other persons motives. Isn't that like battle 101. Getting to know your enemies. You could shoot me, but you have no idea what I am capable of. So I could block the bullet or dodge it. Though I am just trying to get to know you guys, and your personalities. Cause most likely that will tell what the zodiacs are."

Sangwoo wasn't all too impressed by the woman's reason for acting the way she had, but he would say no more in protest. It seemed like an unfavorable idea to piss off the woman with the giant for a bodyguard any further. He put his attention back on the young boy, who seemed to be spouting more arrogance in front of the frightening woman. He didn't exactly blame her for her reaction to it. The boy was disregarding the fact that they had been called here, and that everyone was as qualified as him. His arrogance seemingly didn't please anyone in the area.

"Look, Marcus, was it? I'd advise for you to stop being so sassy to the woman with the gun pointing at you. Not the best chance of surviving there," He tried to give advice to the boy, although he could practically not care less if the boy got shot or not. It probably wouldn't be lethal either. Sangwoo was pretty sure that this boy was showing off, or trying to seem impressive, but it really was not working.

I'm not trying to, and I don't have anything to prove to you guys so I could leave now and not even bother with this. Its not like we are forced to do this. So I think I am going to leave for a little bit. So I might not see you guys again." Marcus walked back to his bike and hopped on to it. "Just so you guys, know my zodiac is the tiger." Marcus then put his headphones back on and started his bike up. He the started back towards the entrance of the Coliseum. Though as he started to drive away, he pulled out a gun and slid it across the ground to Katherine, It just so happened to be the gun that his school specially made for him. It was his way of showing he trusted her.

Katherine looked at the Asian boy. Something in her face changed, she looked more calmed and charming now.

'You learn quick, sunshine. I appreciate your respect.'

She'd then look at the 'too-much-attention-seeking' boy. Katherine bit her lip and thought for a moment as she looked at him, then she narrowed her eyes and sent a quick gaze to the Asian boy.

'I'll give you 50 dollars that he's a monkey.'

She'd look at him and wink with a warm almost-mother-like smile. The wink wouldn't be really seen due to her sunglasses. The guard would seem amused too. He leaned down to their level and said.

'I give 50 that he's a dog'

It would sound strange for the Asian since the guard seemed like a stone. Yet it looked like the guard had a charming smile too. He then stretched his back and returned his deadly glare at the young male.

'Oh man, Mihail, you know how much I hate dogs.'

She'd cross her arms and look at the Asian male.

'My name is Katherina Kozlowskaya. You might heard my name or not.'

She pushed her hand up for a handshake..

Suddenly the too-much-attention boy would say his zodiac sign and she'd groan. Almost at the same time Mihail and Katherina would pull out their wallets and pull 100 dollars in total. They gave it to the Asian boy, looking like its nothing and they did it everyday. That was one of the traditions of Russians. They always made bets.

STORY TELLER

Just as Marcus was about to leave the area, an invisible wall rendered him unable to. Though his bike was able to safely come out of the area, Marcus was not the same. He would probably be lying on the ground now. For the other participants that witnessed this; one thing was evident: they were
not going to get out any time soon.

An old man, wearing green was staring at them from the outside. He had a long beard, and seemed old of age-- too old to be imagined. To anyone that saw him, they would feel a sense of dejàvu. Where exactly have you seen this man before?

Sangwoo wasn't sure whether to accept what seemed like a compliment from the woman or not. He decided to just take it, repeating the thought that being rude again wasn't in his best interest. It had seemed that he had gotten her to act a little more warmly than she had been originally. This was quite promising, as tension between the people he was sure to be around for a while wasn't something he wanted, even if he hadn't managed to get along that well with the boy who had run away. Before Sangwoo was able to refuse the bet, since they weren't something he liked to participate in, he found the woman and her guard shelling money out of their pockets and into his hand, which he had outstretched to meet Katherine's.

"Um, thanks? Anyway, I'm Chu Sangwoo, or, well, Sangwoo Chu when you say it in English. Where are you from?" He asked, trying to wrap his brain around the complicated name. It rang a bell, but he couldn't place where he had heard it. He brushed the thought off, knowing that either she would tell him, or he would remember later. It wasn't all too important anyway.

@Taiga

The cab wandered down the cobblestone streets, the driver looking pensively at the fellow in the backseat. It wasn't that he was doing anything unusual, a camera around his neck and his cane planted firmly between his legs. Occasionally, he would even withdraw his camera and take a picture of the ancient buildings lining the hectic streets. He was dressed well enough, a sports coat over a white polo shirt and carefully ironed pants. What was strange about this fellow was that he was a hair above four feet tall. The cab driver looked through his rear view mirror, catching the tourist's eye and quickly looking away. The tourist noticed the drivers apprehension. "How do you do?" asked the tourist, his voice carried with a rich, earthy tone.

The driver put on his best smile. "Good, sir, I'm very well today." The tourist leaned forward to read the driver's badge. "I'm good myself, Mahesh." The driver's eyes flitted back to the tourist when he said his name, a bolt of electricity in his spine from being acknowledged. "Do you come to the Colosseum often?" The tourist laughed at this in the same brassy tone he spoke in. "First time, I have to admit. When in Rome, right?" The driver nodded and chuckled not entirely disingenuously. The tourist patted Mahesh on the shoulder with calloused hands.

"My name is Marcus, by the way, but friends call me Leadbelly on account of my iron stomach." The driver smiled and nodded as they arrived. Marcus slipped a tip over the seat and wished the driver farewell. He swayed as he walked towards the Colosseum, his cane tap tapping on the ground. He passed by an old man with a long beard, tipping his hat before he entered through the gates. Marcus was vaguely aware that he was heading towards some sort of game, but he chose not to dwell on it until he arrived. Looking around the arena, he saw what appeared to be a group of Asian tourists and a young man driving his motorcycle on the battlefield, which seemed rather rude.

Marcus tipped his hat to the only group of people around with a broad smile, making his presence large to account for his unusual features. "Humanity's protectors get younger every year, don't they?" He spoke with a warm, eager tone. He could only hope they would be understanding.

Once Katherine heard his name, she'd almost forget it at the same time.

'I'll call you sunshine, if you don't mind'

She quickly shock his hand and then started to look around for another members of this group. She felt the sun slowly made sweat appear on her skin. It was probably a bad idea to wear black clothes at such a hot day.

Around 10 minutes later she heard a voice behind her. The voice would make her think about her father, the leader of the Russian mafia. Turning around she noticed the dwarf saying about our age. Her guard felt the status of the male and stretched his back as showing respect.

'Good morning. Yes, it looks like the guards are way young than you may thought.'

She'd look him right in the eye, something attracted her. Katherine thought wether she saw him once. Maybe he had a deal with the Russian mafia one day?

Just like her, as soon as she'd reached her hotel Gen had gotten a quick change of clothes, stuffed some random goodies into her bag and popped off to the Colosseum for some pre-event scouting. When she arrived, she found she was the first one there, and took it upon herself to explore the ruins a little bit- and by a little bit I mean a lot.

She spent ages wandering around, and her sheer curiosity and excitement caused her to overlook the fact that others had arrived. By the time she looked over the stands from the upper levels, she let out of a squeak of alarm. "Oh god." The air seemed to hold a certain tension between them, a power struggle of sorts. She clambered down the stands, leaping step by step, making her way down to the floor as fast as she could, her bag shaking wildly, landing daintily on her feet.

"
Bonjour, sorry I'm late to the party. You'll have to fill me in on all the names." she said apologetically as she darted in, her gaze flitting from person to person, taking in their appearances. Her eyes landed finally on the small man who'd just joined the group, a smile spreading on her lips. "Good morning, Monsieur. How are you on this lovely day?"
