Of Shadows and Swords (Chiarra)

((I'm going to be getting off for a bit))

"Who was it?" she asked him, pausing in her work and looking at him.

((Okay, have fun :) I might be at work by the time you're back))

Lucius paused after laying one of the poles down, his fingers curling loosely around it because he suddenly felt very, very homesick. ". . . My father," He said finally, softly and without looking up, because that was what Aaric was, really. When Lucius had lost his family, Aaric had become his family. But he would go back someday. He swore it to himself that he would go back someday, and he would be with his family again.

((Back ^_^ finally and I guess you are at work right now lol))

"Oh," was all she said as she looked down at the work they were doing. She slowly got back to it and smiled at him. "Well, you'll see him again soon won't you? You won't have to do your soul searching forever." She didn't realize that what she was saying would probably make him feel worse, she was just trying to cheer him up.

((Yep, I was. The last ten minutes or so, 90 percent of the lights went off and it was really creepy. Then they came back on again a few minutes later lol))

Lucius smiled faintly, but it faltered and was sad, and he found himself nearly having to fight back tears. "Yeah. . ." He said quietly, wondering if his voice sounded as steady as he wanted it to. "Not forever. . ." He could never go back, could he?

((I bet that was creepy. Just as creepy as last night, when I just laid down and got comfortable in bed and then my sister has to slowly open my door making it creak and then just stand there not say a word. I was freaked out until she turned my light on lol))

"Did...did I say something?" she asked noticing how the smile on his face faltered. Could...could he not go back home? She reached over and touched his hand softly, before she realized what she was doing and blushed before taking it away. "I'm sorry," she said.

((Oh my god I would've screamed or thrown something O_O))

Lucius flinched slightly at her touch, glancing up at her, and finally drew his hand away from the pole he'd set down. "It - It's okay. Let's just . . . get this tent taken down." They'd spent too much time on just one already.

((I did scream lol, while rolling around in the bed trying to find something to throw.))

She nodded and started working on taking the tent down. She was distracted the whole time she worked though, by thoughts of what they had just talked about. He was just soul searching, so...why did he act like he was afraid he'd never see his father again? She wondered what it was like to have a father. Master was the closest thing she had to it and he did care for her despite being so strict on her. Otherwise why would he go through all the trouble of keeping her safe?

((I have a bedside table so I have plenty of things to throw lol Only one or two are good for damage, though))

Lucius went about taking down the tents with Natalie for a long time without speaking. He finally realized what he was doing when they were almost finished dismantling everything and packing up to go, and gave her a sheepish look. "I'm sorry. I - I didn't mean to be so quiet. I just got focused, I guess. . ."

((I do too, but I was kind of panicky lol))

She looked up at him as he spoke, blushing, smiling a bit, and rubbing the back of her neck. "It's okay," she said. "I don't mind. We needed to get this done anyways. Besides, I'm sure you had a lot on your mind." After a moment, she heard Alrin calling for her. "I...have to go," she said. "It was nice...taking the tents down with you." She smiled before heading off in the direction she heard her master's voice. When her back was to Lucius, her smile faded a bit, thinking of how upset she had made him. She would have to watch her tongue around him and not say such things again.

Lucius started to say goodbye, but she was gone already, so he just sighed and went to find Archer and Melody. Maybe if he got teased by Archer for a while he'd feel more normal again. He didn't want to get stuck in that depressing mindset all over again.

Melody waved over Lucius when she saw him, and saw that he wasn't looking too happy. "What's the matter?" she asked, getting distracted and the tent started to fall on her.

Lucius shook his head a little and helped Archer catch the tent when it started to fall, sighing softly. "Just . . . a few not so sunny thoughts. I'll be all right when I can stop thinking again."

Archer popped out from the other side of the tent. "Ooo, can I help? I know how to hit you hard enough!"

((Gtg to bed. Night))

Melody worried a bit and felt bad thinking she knew what he was thinking about. She bit her lip though, knowing he wouldn't want to hear any apologies. She looked at Archer when he spoke, knowing this time that he was teasing, about to stop him, but didn't. Maybe Archer could help get his mind off of whatever he was thinking, maybe his teasing would help.

"Well," she said. "This is the last tent and we are done." She noticed something then. "Where's Natalie?"

((Night))

Lucius shook his head a little, waving Archer away from him and just helping tie up the tent. "Alrin called her for something. We'll reach the next town soon, so they probably have to go over their act while we walk."

((Not gonna be on much today so might disappear))

((Okay then have fun ^_^ ))

"That makes sense," Melody said softly. She smiled at him a bit and they finished up this tent. She had no idea what to say or do to try and make him feel better.

When all the tents were tied up and packed away for travel, the 'caravan', as Archer liked to call it, headed off. Lucius felt better, after a few hours just chatting idly with Archer and Melody, or even just listening to them talk, watching them hold hands as they walked. If he could be grateful about anything, it was that they could care for each other now, when they never would have in their previous lives. If that was the only good thing this venture had ever brought, he could be happy with that.

Melody was happy that she could hold Archer's hand now with everyone watching. And she smiled at both Archer and Lucius, hoping that he could feel better soon. Soon, she started to hear a rumbling noise and asked, "Is...is that a waterfall? Oh I wish we had time to go and see it." She could practice her swimming too.

((gtg to work))

Archer swung her hand back and forth a bit, looking around when she asked a question. "Hmmm. Sounds like it. We can run off and see if you'd like. We'll just have to be quick getting back." They couldn't really use Lucius' shadows, not with so many people and in broad daylight.

((Okay then, bye))

"What do you think Lucius? Mind sneaking off for a bit?" She looked at him, waiting for an answer.

Lucius paused, unsurely, then just shrugged. "All right. We'll catch up rather easily, I think." With a big group like this, they couldn't move too fast. "Come on. Let's go on ahead before we pass it entirely."

Archer grinned and clapped him on the shoulder. "That's the spirit! Time for adventure!"

((Blargh, stayed late to do some extra tasks -_- I just have to keep reminding myself. "Money." xD ))

((And that is something I desperately need lol))

Melody smiled and started running. "Race you!" she shouted as she made a beeline for where the sounds of the waterfall were coming from. When she made it past the barrier that Alrin had indeed put up to keep the bad Raven (who we still need a name for lol) out, a shadow enclosed her ankles, making her trip to the ground. "Lucius!" she called out. The shadow spread over her whole body, and though she tried to fight it, it started moving on it's own.

"What fun," came the man's voice. A shadow sword was put in her hands and she was turned to face Lucius. "Meet your opponent," he smiled, as if this was great fun. He then forced Melody forward, having her swing her shadow sword at Lucius.

((And felt inspired lol, hope this was okay))

((Sorry, I dozed a bit and got distracted by Pinterest upon waking xD it's cool))

Lucius' eyes went wide and he threw up a block on instinct, biting down on the inside of his cheek almost hard enough to bleed when the collision dragged his feet backwards in the dirt. "Wh-What are you doing!?" As if the man would answer him, as if anything would be a proper explanation. "Let her go. . . Let her go!" No! He couldn't just do that to her. At least Archer had fled to regroup and come up with some sort of strategy. It wouldn't do for both him and Melody to get trapped.

((Ditto on it's cool ^_^ ))

Melody tried fighting it, but she couldn't control shadows. Her body moved of it's own accord as she slashed at it.

"Oh, and stop the fun?" he asked. "Maybe, if you decide to join me...little brother. But it would be so much fun watching you fight one of your little friends."
