/border]How had it come to this?
That was a stupid question. Anna knew exactly how it had happened. She'd opened her mouth to the wrong person, and everything had sprouted from there. She was normally good at not doing just that, but ever since she'd joined the Serpents, Anna had been feeling her lips get looser and looser.
It made her worry, but now wasn't a good time to be dwelling on it. She was, currently, truly in the thick of it, all at the behest of an old client of hers. Or friend. Honestly, she wasn't quite sure. The man was many years her senior, but had always struck her as being uncharacteristically friendly for someone as deeply engrossed in this business as he seemed to be. It'd been a little over a year since she'd last heard from him at this point, so it'd been a surprise when he'd come knocking, and a big surprise when he asked her to bury herself nose deep in Dragon territory.
Squeezed between a cheap brothel and an even cheaper hotel, Anna had crammed herself and four of, perhaps, the most conspicuous Serpents on earth for a job like this. The Jack, The Ace, and two lively young people whose Potentials you could spot from half a mile away.
She'd been eyeballing them from behind the safety of her mask's rubber, which was now in the form of a goat, at every chance she got. She was only familiar with two of them, and was quite glad that the other two had not been able to see the look on her face when they'd shown up. It was rude, she knew, but she felt like anybody that Tri invited would not be very helpful for the type of work they were going to be doing today.
“Right…” Anna spoke with the closest semblance of calm that she could muster. “Let’s go over this one more time.” She reached into her pocket, and then produced a thoroughly crumpled photo of a small, bright red gem.
“We’re here to steal this.” She paused, for emphasis. “Just to steal this. If what my source told me is right, it should be somewhere in one of the brothels just a few blocks over, but I’ve got no idea which room.”
That had surprised her a little. This particular client had always been much more liberal with the details regarding his jobs, but then again, he’d also never asked her to mess with one of the Big Four before.
“I think I’ll be able to sneak us in smoothly enough, but it’ll be up to you guys to stay snuck after that.” Anna wondered if she should’ve left her implication unsaid, then remembered who exactly she was working with. “Which would, um, really prefer. No point in starting trouble we can avoid, right?”
She really hoped that worked.
“Er. Anyway. We’re looking for the Platinum Rabbit. I think it’s one of Dragons’ fancier brothels… Which means it’ll probably be pretty tightly guarded. I was planning to just sneak us in through the roof, but if you guys have any other ideas, I'm open to hear them.”
That was just about one of the most blatant lies Anna had told in her life. She really, really hoped they didn’t have any other ideas. Especially not the Jack and Ace.
