Fantasy Moonlit Crisis OOC

I'd like to take a poll for which familiar I should aim towards. One is a figure from history whereas the other is a character from a middle eastern folk tale. I'll be using their backgrounds as a skeleton but I will flesh them out and add/remove stuff in order to better meet my tastes.

The first is Duban, a character. Duban was a sage who worked for King Yunan. Yunan's advisor warns the king that Duban is going to try to kill him (though Duban was loyal af so that advisor is a snaaake), and Yunan executes the sage. Duban gives the king a magic book just before he is beheaded and the king ends up dying because the OG poisoned the pages

The second is Takeda Shingen. Known as the Tiger of Kai, he was a reputable samurai with a lot of kills under his belt as well as poems. However, he died mysteriously and the warrior Oda Nobunaga took power afterwards
What kind of powers would you aim to have with each?

Although a poetic samurai sounds pretty darn cool, I'll vote for Duban. I simply find his story more intriguing, and would like to see how you would portray it in the roleplay ^^

Duban was a master of medicine so I’m thinking he has the ability to heal wounds and poison others. Like his staff emits a type of poison or maybe he has the ability to like.. give off an aura that manipulates people’s biological functioning. He’s also a decent fighter because all men were required to serve under the king’s military for a few years. I’m not really sure for him though. I just know I want it to involve biology and chemistry. Personality wise, he’s intelligent, plays with words, and has a cheeky smirk on his face usually. He’s also extremely loyal to the few he trusts. Acts a bit lazy

Takeda is a reknown swordsman. For his history, I was going to have his mysterious death he due his travels through a snow storm in order to save his then wife who had fallen in. He doesn’t survive the journey and ends up freezing to death. His power revolves around ice and snow, etc. Takeda is dutiful and passionate, while also being a bit of a romantic unconsciously. He can come off as arrogant some times because he likes to one up people

Personally the extent to which "manipulating biological functioning" goes is what would determine my vote. If you basically stick to the poisoning and healing, Duban has my vote, but if you would add some crazy shenanigans with it, then it'd be better to settle with Takeda in my opinion.

Oh? Interesting. King Henry VIII daughter and the one he forsook because he wanted a son oh so bad but couldn't get one so basically abandoned both wife and daughter. If I recall my history lesson right, she tried to destroy everything her father had established after she came to power and went on to try and re-establish Roman Catholicism back into England.

Man, did she hate her dad; can't blame her since he had her be an illegitimate child and virtually ignored his first family after having multiple wives to get a son.. I can't remember how she died, but I think it was uh....during a war? I know she wasn't executed like the kings that came after her like James I (or maybe it was second?) whatever, I look forward to the interaction. Idea Idea

Yep, but after some research I found there is so much more than that. In fact the tragic way in which she had multiple fake pregancies she thought were real, which people appearantly even secretely celebrated being fake to the point where nobody believed it the second time around, and then she ended up having to concede the throne to the sister who had previously tried usurping the throne from her... There is just so much to unpack. And I'm definitely one who's gonna try XD

She died of a sickness. I'm twist the story a little to mix her better with the myth and with the idea of the familar I have in mind, but I'm gonna try to at least keep the most of her story.

Reinhardt Reinhardt How would ordinary people be dragged into the plot?

I'm thinking of creating a second character.

Many ways, actually. They can be simply witnesses to an unexplainable act and trt to drag society into the hidden truth of mages, they can be unintentionally involved in a magical activity, they can be actively interested in learning more of the mages, and a lot more.

Just piggybacking on the question of VioletShadow VioletShadow , but can ordinary people even see magic? What an ordinary person sees somene using magic? Is there any department or group of mages that handles these kinds of things?

Yes, ordinary people can see magic just as mages can. That's why the Mages' Association has strived to keep the existence of magecraft hidden for years.

Should they bear witness, there are certain ways to tackle such an issue - killing the witness, making them thunk they are insane through political manipulation, but the most common approach is to erase their memory of the witnessed incident.

There's really no 'division'in the association that does this, rather, it's a standard procedure for mages. However, if the need arises, the Mages' Association sends specially trained mages for the purpose of keeping things secret - they are known as Erasers.

Their goal is simple. If the witness complies, the memory shall be erased, along with those who may have shared such info with them. If not, well, let's just say they erase something far more precious than money.

Idea Idea I was reading up Bloody Marry, gotta say real good job dude. Howard, when he does find out that familiar is the Queen Mary I, might just might, pay his respects to her on the battle field as a citizen of Britain.

But, well, that all really depends on how CrimsonEclipse CrimsonEclipse and you end up working together and how he sees her afterwards depending on how much damage those two cause and how much he ends up forcing himself to clean up because of it.

Reinhardt Reinhardt I was actually wondering, when the RP starts is there any specific location you have in mind for all the characters or?

Wow, thank you! May I asked what part made you say I did a good job? I like to know my good points :)

I can totally see Mary like sparing his life or something just because of that show of respect. XD

One thing that got my attention was the fact you added sources. I don't think I've ever seen that on RPN so far when it comes to any historical character being turned or redacted for the sake of fiction. Mainly cuz well no GM has ever required it, but it was neat to see that extra bit.

As for what I liked? I liked how you twisted her backstory in general and incorporated that into her abilities. The way you used the legends of Bloody Mary to also add effects to her powers like the Mirror Gate Network, Bastard Queen, and Flames of Heresy are all interesting things I found nicely aligning with the background you gave her. It was nicely done and well crafted.

One question I do have though, is the 10 stages that relate to her Grand Phantasm. Does she alter physically with every stage, like grow older or look more demonic? Curious since My Ambition seems to alter her physically to some extent.

And another question I have is, since she can use the mirrors to travel, could she, idk somehow pop up in Howard's glasses if she wanted to? And could that be used as a form of attack in battle? Like drawing one of her blades out through his lenses?

Well, I like to make it clear where I got my information, as I know many sources tend to contradict. I also think that it helps in this cases where you have to adapt a historical figure into a supernatural being servant style, so peole can go and check you're not spitting bullshit.

In more pratical terms, I guess i needed a reason to add a extra tab and I guess having the links means I don't have to keep those tabs open 24/7 hehe :P

Twisted her backstory?

And thank you! I also left a little easter egg regarding those measures (in KM) for those that know of England's geography. XD

Funnily enough, the innitial conception of that phantasm was something like that. However, I realized I had no way of actually making it fit well enough, so I decided that instead what it does is give the character a second anchor, and the anchor is the one that alters physically. Like a manifestation of her "pregancy". It starts out as a small object, I'm thinking like a mirror and eventually grows into like a palace and such, and at it's final stage it summons something akin to a very powerful golem ,the "Blue baby".

However, the ability does have one instance in which her body changes. Destroy either one of her anchors, and her connection to the world will weaken forcing her into the more traditional Bloody Mary look, the look she had as she cast the spell while being buried alive (according to my backstory).

And another question I have is, since she can use the mirrors to travel, could she, idk somehow pop up in Howard's glasses if she wanted to? And could that be used as a form of attack in battle? Like drawing one of her blades out through his lenses?
She can only really travel through two kinds of mirrors- traditional mirrors (whether whole or shattered) or perfect reflective surfaces. Normally, glasses can reflect some light, but they are also made to let it pass through, albeit distorted, which makes them something which Mary can at most see through. However, if there is like a really well polished piece of metal lying around, she can pop up from there.

Idea Idea
I actually looked up her reach for the Bloody Mary ability. Girl can cover a lot of ground. Pretty cool in all honesty, because like her ability covers a large portion of the UK.

Mitchs98 Mitchs98 Speaking of locations, I actually had an idea I wanted to run by you, relating to character interactions whenever you get the chance I'd like to talk about it if you're interested.

I looked up the length and width of England and used those as measures. Since she was the queen and that was once her reach, plus there are other versions for different countries.

I was actually planning to group up all characters at the start, but that will most likely change. You can be sure for one thing though - the RP will be set on a fictional city. Still thinking on whether or not to use the same city for the original draft of the RP concept.

By the way, please tag me if you are finished working on your CS. Those with WIP labels will otherwise remained unchecked unless I know they're ready.

And If anyone would like yet another Grand Familiar, hit me up.

Wait, there can be more than one?

Sure, a mage is possible to have more than one Grand Familiar under their control, but with of all the living mages, none is able to do such due to the sheer heaviness of mana requirement, and the necessary preparations. Not even under the blue moon's influence.

So right now, in the current age, it is more or less impossible. But in the ancient times, when magic still hasn't reached its decline, the chances of doing so are much higher.

But you may have misunderstood me. I was saying that I would make a Grand Familiar if anyone (who doesn't already have one) would desire one. Of course, it would only apply to mages.
