Generally speaking, due to being inexperienced, students generally help with either protecting civilians or assisting with cleanup after monster fights. Sometimes they also help out with regular natural disasters too. Like earth quakes and stuff.

Fun fact: in this universe 9/11 wasn't as bad as it was here because Magical Girls were on hand to help rescue civilians. Still pretty bad, though.

Maybe sometime in the future. That's kind of endgame stuff. Like a big season/series finale thing where everybody who's more qualified (except maybe Shanon) is captured or distracted or something so all that's left to fight the bad guy is the main characters.
