Epiphany
Proverbs 17:9
Susan Danvers
"Hey, your cousin's on the air."
Susan turned away from her inspection of the drywall her work crew had just finished on the fifth floor of the Dennis Pierce Complex, a multi-purpose apartment and storefront that had been caved in on the northern side thanks to some particularly enthusiastic hero last month. Excelsior Construction had snagged the contract after Damage Control had performed the initial inspection and they were already just about done with repairs. Thankfully, the Complex was a newer building and, though it increased the cost of replacement parts, new construction was a lot more modular than past architecture had been. If this had been a brownstone or something old-fashioned, they'd be working on it for months, no doubt.
With matters well in hand, the tall blonde woman peeled herself away from doing quality assurance and stepped into a landing that Excelsior used to stage their work on each floor. Her lead electrician tapped his his holospecs and said "Local channel, breaking news." Susan reached into her own pocket and produced her own holospecs. Paired with her smartphone, the portable AR HUD dropped a news channel overlay on the world as she scrolled through its menu to find what her electrician had spotted. With a slight tensing of her eyelids, Susan turned on the news livestream and watched as Marvel Boy traded words with the lead officer outside some abandoned building.
The sight of Alex made her smile. He was younger than her by a few years but he'd grown up with super powers. In a way, he'd always been something of a protective little brother to an otherwise only child. Susan liked seeing him prosper like this, especially since it looked like the Governor's kidnapped daughter had been rescued and placed in an ambulance.
Once Alex stepped away from the police on the livestream, Susan brought up a text menu and dropped him a message to give her a call. Always nice to line up a new gig after this one was done. And maybe...have another conversation about how this whole heroing business went. With her recently awakened abilities, it increasingly felt like she was wasting them just running her construction company. If anyone could show her the ropes or at least give her the basics on how one went about the business, it'd be her younger cousin.
Alex,
Nice save. You make it look easy. I know it's not, though. You want to stop by for dinner and fill your big cuz in on how you go about it? Maybe it's time you're not the only member of our generation of the family doing the work. Let's talk tonight.
