Star stood in front of the Dark Elf, looking through him with her unseeing eyes. The night had been very cold, and the girl looked exhausted. Her clothes were wet from the moisture in the trees and bushes she had used to approach the castle unseen. The Dark Elf spoke, but she heard nothing. Her body simply stood awkwardly still, waiting.
The magician that was with her held little presence. Had the walkway not been brightly lit, the mysterious figure may have gone unnoticed. It's body was hard to describe, it had an unmistakable humanoid shape, but the texture of the body was translucent and continuously in motion. It looked as if the figure was made up of some kind of gas or smoke.
An unnaturally cold breeze swept through the air, distorting the magician's figure. The faint sound of a woman's voice carried pointedly towards the comatose girl. Suddenly, Star's body came to life. She turned to look at the magician, seconds before it's figure dispersed into the air. Star's head frantically darted around. She could sense the aura of many of the people and creatures that had just left. Many of them were heading towards the woods, but her senses felt something else familiar in the air. Her movements became much more subtle and deliberate as she tried to pinpoint the scent. Seconds later, she was gone.
Hours later, the girl was back in the city, hopping from rooftop to rooftop. The scent she had caught was a sweet and pleasant smelling aura. It was something that felt almost familiar, something below the surface that was just beyond the reach of her state of mind. As she reached the source, she could smell a distinct metallic aroma filling the building. There were many soldiers inside, but even from her position on the adjacent roof, she could hear as they shouted profanities, destroying everything inside while searching for her targets. Even without entering the building, she knew that her targets had fled some time ago. Most likely through some underground patch as she was having trouble finding their current positions.
As she was scanning the air for any hint of a scent, the brief smell of bread passed through her senses. Suddenly, her memories flooded back. Her body was once again hers as she fell to the floor, completely exhausted. She struggled to make sense of what had happened, trying very hard not to think about why she had sensed her mother's presence before she was captured. The queen's quest, the gathering evil, the trek to the forest, so much had happened, and she knew she was the only one that could help the fleeing refugees. She knew she needed to find them as quickly as possible, to warn them of the impending danger. With only sheer willpower, Star forced herself up and began to scroll through her memory. She knew she had sensed the people within the bakery before her capture, so she knew she could find them if she could remember their scent. The smell of bread once again crossed her mind, that singular smell allowed her to focus her mind and find what she was looking for. She found the refugees, albeit the scent was faint and a distance away, but she was relieved that she finally found them.
Star stepped to the ledge to find the refugees, locking onto their scent. Before she could leap to the next building, her body suddenly felt heavy. She began to fall backwards when a pair of hands caught her. Her eyes began to feel heavy, as her instincts warned her of danger. She fought, but it was no use, she had nothing left to give.
A woman's voice echoed in the air, "Sleep little one, your life is about to become very hectic. You'll need your energy."
Star drifted to sleep, thinking only of her mother as the fog in her mind enveloped the world around her.
