Magic For Sale

"Musta been a really bad nightmare." He said, patting her head calmly. Sure, he'd had a scare when she first woke up. There was a large amount of magic building, and rapidly, so something would have happened... but he realized that yes, he really did trust her... and would until something happened to make him feel otherwise. When petting her didn't help, if only because she wasn't looking at him, he pulled her into a hug. It'd worked last time... maybe this time? "I'm right here, Adenyyd, I promise... I'll keep you safe as long as I can."

Once more she let herself relax in the physical comfort of the hug, laying her head against his shoulder as she slowly wrapped her arms around him in response. "Thank you." She whispered and cleared her throat, pushing away tears. "Thank you for protecting me." No one had ever done that before, really.

After a few minutes, she took a deep breath and pulled away from the hug slightly. "Adel..." She started, and then stopped, unsure of what to say next. She didn't know what she wanted to do. She was lost.

Looking down at her he smiled, not the kind of smile he normally gave, but one that almost looked mature. And then it was gone as the sound of a slammed door, and a woman's voice... "ADEL YOU FLAME-HEADED IDIOT! GET OUT HERE, IT'S TIME FOR YOUR LESSONS!" He looked positively frightened, nearly shaking and started whimpering, sounding like a dog of some kind. That had just been kicked.

"It's Aria... I forgot that was today..."

Adenyyd wanted to laugh but something about seeing Adel frightened made her mad. Then the woman's words made her even madder. Adel was not an idiot! Baring her teeth, now slightly fanged, she grabbed Adel by the hand and dragged him out of the room, towards the voice. Finally she saw a woman, blond, seeming to be about middle aged. That must be Aria. "Excuse me, but Adel is not an idiot and you have no right to speak to him that way!" Adenyyd snapped at her furiously, not even questioning her feelings and what they meant.

The blond-haired blue-eyed woman, Aria... smirked. "Ahh... finally a woman who can put up with our resident village idiot. He's an idiot until I say otherwise... I'm his teacher!" One hand rose and playfully ruffled Adenyyd's hair, "I wonder what trick he used to get you to say that though... poor girl. Stuck with that idiot." the smirk melded into a soft smile, "I'll put him to rights," She glared at the red-haired idiot, who had run after Adenyyd in an attempt to stop said half-dragon, only to freeze. "Now. What is the meaning of this?"

"A-Aria! This is Adenyyd, my dragon partner. Adenyyd, this is my tutor, Aria. S-she's in charge of teaching me magic..." He he he... yeah, he was expecting to be hit by her sword, Excalibur, at any moment.

(Now I wonder who Aria could be modeled after... Hehe :D )

Adenyyd was left speechless as the woman didn't even seem angered but just... ruffled her hair?! Then she flushed as the meaning of Aria's words hit her. "I- We're- We're not together like that!" She shouted furiously, clenching her hands into fists. "I wasn't tricked by anyone! And Adel isn't an idiot! None of you treat him right!" She ended with a growl, unable to find the words to continue. Scowling at Aria, she slowly managed to get herself under control. No longer snarling, but anger still clear in her eyes, she stood by Adel and glared at the woman fiercely. "I will stay with Adel during his lesson. If you so much as hit him..." She left the threat unfinished.

A good natured laugh... really. She was adorable. "Fine fine..." Really, she only hit him when he was being insufferable. It's not her fault that was nearly every day. "Right, to the yard. Don't want you blowing up yet another bedroom, now do we? ABOUT FACE!" Adel, strangely quiet, turned around, straight as a board, and ready to walk to the yard as always. He managed to mutter a 'sorry' before she shouted out again "QUIET! MARCH FORWARD!"

Inwardly Adenyyd fumed. How was this any way to treat a student? This wasn't the military! However she didn't want to interfere and so she kept up a blank face. Walking forward with Adel, she managed to pat his arm comfortingly as they walked, wanting him to know that she was there for him and wouldn't let any harm come to him. She knew that he wasn't an idiot and that would soon be proven.

Out in the yard Adel managed to give her a grateful look... only to be pushed away from her. "Right. We're going to practice you're favorite spell... that fireball of yours. Without a staff." He pouted, but nodded. Hand forward, eyes closed, he focused... and unlike before enough magic was gathered to make his clothes and hair move in an invisible wind. A small ball of red energy, shot forward... and a few feet away grew exponentially, an explosion as powerful as a bomb, and much more controlled. It hovered in place, befire going straight up, without so much as scorching the grass underneath. Aria's mouth dropped open... and if you looked at his face you'd see Adel was so calm it was almost meaningless to him.

Were it not for the way he stared at his hand afterward, anyway.

"I told you he wasn't an idiot." Adenyyd couldn't resist saying to Aria as she once more went over to stand next to Adel, patting him on the arm again. "Good job." She said simply to him, a smile on her face. Of course her partner was capable of such things, they wouldn't be paired together if he couldn't.

"You want a fireball?" She spoke, smirking slightly. "Let me show you what a proper fireball looks like." Then with a roar, flames jetted from her mouth. They rolled into a ball, the flames swirling to keep the perfectly round shape in the air as she closed her mouth with a smug look. The fireball hung there for a few minutes before disappearing.

Aria sighed... "Well. Guess that's all of the proof I needed to move on. We're going to start work on harder spells. Finally. We've been trying to get you to do that for ten years!" A small pout, so that was a dragon? Impressive, but difficult to control, she was sure. "Right, I'm going to write a spell... I want you to memorize it. If you can." Ten years was not impressive... even if that one day of difference was. With a glowing hand she wrote on the air, Akari to honou no chikai no moto ni, waga te ni izanae, Ooinaru chikara wo! and turned it around to face him.

Adenyyd just stared at the strange symbols hanging in the air. She didn't understand a single word. In truth, Adenyyd never spoke her spells, at least not usually. Glancing at Adel, she shrugged slightly to signify her confusion. Maybe if he showed her the spell first, then she could duplicate it, but she couldn't read the spell on her own.

"Akari to honou no chikai no moto ni, waga te ni izanae, Ooinaru chikara wo!" It was just him trying it out. Judging by the language it was an oriental spell, but that was typica- Light. Only it was hot. What? It felt nearly alive, growing at first and as he freaked out getting smaller...

"OCHITSUKE!" That... Aria was telling him to calm down? WHY? Ok, deep breaths... in and out, and the light stabilized... his whole arm was glowing with the power. What was this? "Good.... you at least managed to summon power. This amount won't be nearly enough, but...."

Adenyyd was now furious. "You want him to summon power on his own? Are you crazy or do you not know the first nature of the bond?" She snapped at Aria as she quickly grabbed Adel's hand, helping him to stabilize the power. "Since we've bonded, the power he calls on is not just his, but mine as well. By asking Adel to summon power, you're asking him to handle Dragon fire!"

Taking a few deep breaths to calm herself, Adenyyd called up her power. It spread like black flames over her body. The light on Adel's arm responded, crawling over his body to join her black flames at the place where their hands connected.

Adel didn't dare move... though he slowly went from scared to awed. The mix of darkness and light was beautiful... truly beautiful. It was like the two of them were dancing, if he thought of the plasma and black flames as their two forms.... although he felt like it would end far too soon for his own liking. Sadly Aria wasn't as happy with the results. "You're saying, basically, that an idiot like him can't handle holding power for the two of you?! What about times when you're unable to fight, miss half-dragon? Even Spirit dragons have times when they're powerless! I'm not going to let him stop until he can hold all of that power on his own."

Adenyyd was beyond anger. She had never felt this white-hot fury before in her life. Slowly she began absorbing Adel's energy, the light fading off of him as her own flames grew stronger. Dropping his hand, she began to stalk towards Aria, a feral look in her eyes. "You want him to control my energy? Do you know how I can control it this well, before I met my partner?"

"I was barely a hatching, still learning to shift forms reliably. Two hunters came for me. Not for me specifically, but rumours of a Dragon in the area had spread and they had come searching. They caught me as I was shifting. It wasn't as fast as it is now, and I was defenseless. They tortured me for days as they tried to break me. My first spell was fireball, and I had to use it to kill someone. My power was running rampant and I almost killed myself several time as I struggled to control myself."

She was breathing hard now, shining almost too bright to look at. "And you dare, to ask Adel to do what I can? You dare to ask him to achieve something even a half-Dragon was only able to do after days of endless pain and suffering?" Her voice turned deadly. "How dare you call yourself a teacher."

Her eye twitched, reactions following this pattern. That was incredibly sad. That was rude. ISN'T THAT WHY I WANT HIM TO PRACTICE! "I never said it had to be in one day. Just that I'd be staying here, forcing him to practice all day every day, until he can do it." Her tone was utterly calm, almost dangerously so...

"I'm practicing. See? So please, Alicia... calm down." Adel was panicking, trying to keep this all calm and safe... and Adenyyd not fighting with his teacher.

Adenyyd blinked and felt hot tears spill over onto her skin. Quickly wiping them away, she closed her eyes before more could follow. "I see." She said, fighting to keep her voice steady. "I must apologize for my actions. I spoke out of turn, and was quite rude to you. I hope you can forgive me for my mistake."

She let the power drain off into the earth, feeling exhausted. It still took a lot out of her to do that. Wiping her eyes once more, she turned and stiffly walked back to stand next to Adel, eyes on the floor. As usual, her emotions got the better of her and she made a foolish mistake. It's okay, she was used to that by now.

"O-oi... Adenyyd?" Adel was confused... first she was angry, then she was sad... oh dear. He let his side of the spell drop, moving over to grab her shoulders lightly. "I'm sorry you had to deal with something like that..." Where had it been? Had he missed it? Was it his fault that she was in such pain now... the look on his face, guilt and worry and sorrow...

"I didn't say to stop." One hand out to summon her weapon, only for Adel to glare at her from where he was pulling Adenyyd into yet another hug, a soft sigh. The hand let go, glowing hints of magic fading, and she turned around. "Fine. I'm sure you've not eaten lunch yet, we'll brake for that and come back to it." And she was walking down the road... what was that about? He's never glared at me... he's too scared...

"Adenyyd? I'm here. It's ok." He started to rub her back, not seeing the tattoo. "Y-y'know... I was kinda glad. You're the first person who's stood up for me like that." Everyone hated him, he knew. Just because he was so oblivious and overly cheerful...

She couldn't help it. Just his kind touch was enough to have the tears spilling out of her eyes. She opened her mouth to speak but a sob came out instead. And then, before she knew it, she was crying into his shoulder. Her body trembled against him as she bawled like a child, unable to control herself and stop the tears.

She didn't know how long she had cried for but eventually she managed to stop herself, pulling back slightly and wiping her eyes. "Thank you." She managed to whisper to him, unable to look him in the eyes. "My partner... Thank you for everything."

"Y-you're welcome?" Where had that come from? His shirt was now halfway soaked, but he didn't mind. The slightly confused look on his face gave way to a soft one, "Anytime, Adenyyd. I'll always be here when you need me... if you'll let me." He lifted one finger to wipe off a few stray tears. "T-though, I'm probably going to mess up a lot, so tell me when you want me to leave you alone, alright?" Getting lunch? No, he was too focused on keeping her alive and happy... even if there was pains in his stomach.

She gave him a watery smile, taking his hand and pulling him back into the castle. "I'm hungry and I think you are too." She said, her voice only slightly shaky as she sniffled a bit and took a deep breath. "Would you like me to make you something in particular?" She asked, wanting to make something special for him.

"I can make just about anything, I was alone all my life so I had to learn how to cook or I would have starved." She didn't know why she kept telling him about her life. She never told anyone about it. But for some reason, Adenyyd knew that Adel was safe to tell. He wouldn't turn his back on her or leave her.

Anything? A picture of himself eating enough food to stack taller than him came into mind, but he forced it out. "I'm not particularly craving anything... unless we could manage to make... I don't know, some kind of fancy sandwich?" He'd never heard the proper name for those things in puffy roll-like bread. Would she even know what he was talking about?

"Well it depends on if you have the right kind of bread..." Adenyyd mused as she glanced inside the cupboards of the kitchen. A disappointed frown in her face, she turned back to him with a sigh. "You don't have the proper bread to make a 'fancy' sandwich, as you called it. Next time check before you ask. I can't perform miracles." She scolded him lightly before taking out the ingredients necessary for a stir fry. "This won't take long, you can set the table if you want to." She offered to him, skillfully adding ingredients to the pan and frying them.

If he had been a kid who was normally acting like the Japanese... he'd have gone rigid. Instead, he gripped his chest as though something pierced it, "No!!!! I forgot we hadn't gone shopping this week. I'll get us fancy bread tomorrow!" now pointing to the sky like an idiot he kept the pose for a short while. Once done with it he sat down, trying not to drool at the good smell of her work. Adenyyd was an amazing cook.... soo good.... Maybe I should ask her to ma- no, next time I'm cooking! I'll make steak! It's the only thing I don't burn slightly. I wonder how good mine is, actually... never asked. STIR FRY!
