Realistic or Modern Mafia Wars

°Mia°

Mia watched as drunken people swung each other around the room, watched as Tommy and Olive seemed to take a significant liking to each other, and watched as the Varenzo man receded into the background as if he were never there. She had always enjoyed the dinner parties which were carefully planned by the Varenzo's, she didn't often participate in them and she had never once took to the liking of alcohol but she enjoyed watching how careless and free people were allowed to be at such events. Dancing with their beloved or befallen, humming the steady tune of a once forgotten song, laughing as if they were never going to, it was wondrous to witness such events unfold and it was truly a pity when the festivities ceased.

Clarence set his drink aside on a tray, empty. He wasn't in the slightest buzzed and honestly thought it was better that way. It kept his focus on the task at hand instead of in the clouds. Vince appeared occupied with the drunk that'd stumbled to his porch step. He was out, yet the night was young and he knew he was bound to see him eventually. He'd want it too much to do much else.

His eyes befell a certain young lady with a floral dress and fuschia heels. The spider hadn't hidden well enough this time... He smirked coyly. Maybe he could make her job easier for the evening...

Moving swiftly through the crowd, nodding and acknowledging with little shown annoyance at their inability to move, as he approached the girl. The music picked up as he offered a hand "a dance?" He raised an eyebrow, expecting the obvious protest. It was better to see her reaction though. Sometimes, it's people like her who gave the most unexpected answers.

Mia glanced up as the atmosphere shifted slightly and the sound of footsteps headed her way came to a stop directly in front of her. Whatever she had been expecting, it certainly hadn't been a Varenzo requesting to dance with her and she felt a certain urge to laugh but withheld her amusement in turn for a cold smile. "I suppose if I am able to keep an eye on you, why not?" Truth be told, Mia had not danced with many and those she graced with her presence always ended up in plastic bags thrown haphazardly into a gutter. She slid her hand into his before striding forward and melting into the crowd.

"It goes without saying you look lovely today... But then again, I believe anyone looks more lovely clean than coated in the blood of one's enemies" he commented, pulling her body close to his, piercing eyes gazing into hers as if to read every move she would make before she could make them. He guided her back, then through carefully construed steps. He wasn't a dancer per say, but leading in anything was easy once you had the knack.

The others around them made way. As two clashing forces meeting on a close front, the general air around them was potent, strong. No one wanted to interfer on a confrontation- no, dance (implicating the grace and poise they both held in the clash)- like theirs.

Mia glimpsed a fragment of the predator which lay dormant inside of the man, gliding around the room with defined ease as she matched each step for step. She had questions that would possibly only be answered for this night and what was a little harm in dancing? She chuckled lightly at his statement before veering left and swaying slightly to the music, cutting carefully through people who also preferred dancing rather than the alcohol which had been offered freely tonight. "That is quite sweet for someone of your stature, may I say you look handsome as well? Now, tell me if this often said but..what exactly are you doing in such a place as this? I would assume you would be with the Varenzo's." The statement was whispered as Mia rested her head upon the man's shoulder, feigning innocence at her statement. Both of them knew the game they happened to be playing with each other and it was civil until one of them made their move.

@Lightning Quick

He smiled, keeping his hand on her waist and the other in her own petite one. "You can say it, but the spotlight's on you. After all, I'm not the one that's pulling off the dress here. Though I could try if that's what you'd prefer" he said attempting humor. Watching her movements was easy. She's an easy girl to look at, after all. He'd be worried he'd crush her if he weren't careful, if he didn't know what a girl like her was capable of. "Why, didn't I say this before? I'm here to see the other side. I mean no harm, really. Yet your haste to judge my intention, I dare call it crass of you." He spun her and pulled her back "I decided a night on the town wouldn't hurt. I never get to enjoy myself. What about you? What brings you to such a formal event?"

-Mia failed to hide the laugh which alarmed two people who were stood directly next to them, looking the Varenzo directly in the eye before observing his facial features. She wasn't falsifying information when she had stated that he was handsome which was somewhat unnerving given what she knew of his background, the Varenzo's could be merciless when it came to certain situations and she knew this better than most. "I declare, if you wore a dress I would no longer be the center of attention as many would trip over their own feet just to have a chance to dance with you.." Mia gripped his hand tighter as she was spun and pulled back into the embrace, the music somewhat muffled as if she had been pulled underwater. "I will trust you for now unless you give me reason not to, as for my business here.. I admire the Caretti's as they have provided for me and my Mother for a long time since the death of my father and I would not hesitate to attend one of their parties when offered..tell me, do the Varenzo's hold dinner parties? I've never graced their presence formally before."-

A soft tune played from a small radio on the dresser and the wind blew in through an open window in the decent sized bedroom. Maria had just finished her touch ups when she heard her fathers booming voice from down the hall,

"Study!"

She chuckled lightly as she stood up from her vanity. Walking down the hallway was quiet, aside from the sound of her shoes. She stopped outside the door of her father's private study. She looked in and saw him pacing around, with various pairs of shoes laid out. She smiled and knocked on the door frame, "I figured you were around here somewhere. May I come in?" She stood there with her hands behind her back and her shoulders straight. She always tried to act her best around the Don.

"You'll find we host the parties we feel fit to celebrate more notable events. Wasteful spending has never been our boat, really. Yet we do get a bit lavish at our own. I'm surprised you haven't heard, they're quite well attended" he nodded off handedly. He wasn't afraid to boast to improve his own ego, yet it felt dull doing it at someone else's affair. It wasn't his place to slander a decent party, especially not one with a high alcohol content such as this one. The smell of it permitted the air nicely. A sign of a high class get together, his mother would call it. "You say the Caretti's fund you... How kind. Seems to me they'd be in a shock if you were to leave for somewhere else." He heavily implied as they continued to dance. He made no offers, but her talents wouldn't be wasted in his own hand instead of the wilting Caretti families. Why leave such a nice flower to rot with the rest of a spoiled patch?

Mia

-Mia could instantly picture the party he had described and wondered if they would take kindly to her visiting for certain matters to be attended to. She rolled her eyes in incredulity at the implication the man had made before leaning in closer, her face merely inches away from him. "I would call it offensive were it anyone else but I hope you'll find that I am a loyal woman who wishes to serve this family with the best of my abilities..I certainly wouldn't mind seeing if we could all set up a conference of some sort but I fear that none of us would see eye-to-eye and while I enjoy your company Mr. Varenzo, I wouldn't leave this family even if you dragged me away.." she tilted her head and the smile upon her face only grew wider, she thought of the man as a snake of sorts. Clever and awfully sneaky.

"I don't know, miss venvicitti, you'll find that I'm... Quite... Persuasive..." Each word brought his face closer to hers. Seduction... That was a technique. Not one of this favorites, as he felt his loyalties lay with finding one girl rather than sleeping his way to the top, but he was never above a tousle with a strong woman like this one. One that could keep up. His hand trailed down, just so in a maner one could see as accidental if you didn't know him.

But Clarence was a Varenzo. There wasn't an accident within a 10 mile radius if he didn't want it there.

Mia

The audacity of a Varenzo would never fail to baffle her, Mia slid her hands up towards the man's face and pressed her thumb lightly into his cheek as her other hand clutched his back. She leaned forward, her lips stopping directly over his ear before she chose to speak. "Mr. Varenzo, if you do not remove your hand from where you've placed it.. I will rip a godly proportion of your face off, my dear." She removed her hand from his skin before leaning backwards and sliding her gaze towards his arm as she patiently awaited his reaction.

@Lightning Quick

"Yes, yes. Come in dear." he said, still going back and forth. The pain was still there, but much less then what it had been. And it was only bound to get better. But a little encouragment never hurt. So, going over to the desk, he grabs an edge and begins to message his knees and legs in general.

"Now, what is it you want Maria." he said, just a hint of curiosity in his voice. She asked for so little, so what did she want?

He pulled his hand back up, laughing and admitting his defeat internally "you win, you win. You know, that could've just slipped there. It's rude to make assumption without all of the facts. For example, I could've been extremely inebriated and had lost control of my movements. You'll never know" he offered, picking their dance back up where it's left off. He let her take conversational lead. He had no use with it at the moment and he'd rather focus on keeping his own tongue in check rather than that and worrying about the correct questions to begin each topic.

Vince gave his father a brief nod, his eyes still on the newcomer. What his father required of him with the other youth was no issue, and Vince wasn't much of a drinker, so the bit about appearing sober didn't concern him much, even if he did drink, Vince was known to hold his drink well. Vince silently watched his father exchange niceties with the belated guest, his mind drifting at bit from the presently aimless conversation which he had no intention of interjecting his own opinion into.

Only a moment ago Vince had entertained the thought of going to find Clarence once again and having a word with the other boy, but Clarence seemed otherwise preoccupied at the moment. And with the oddest person as well. Clarence Varenzo and the Caretti's own Mia were dancing together, from a distance not so far that it would escape Vince's notice, Clarence leaning in suspiciously close to the slim woman. Clarence had no doubt Been the one to initiate conversation, Mia wasn't one to speak casually with those she considered dangerous, but she would not turn an asked opportunity down. And Vince almost had a mind to interfere with the pair, but he quickly banished the thought, his sudden presence would only cause more trouble and disrupt the precariously balanced peace, he trusted Mia to handle herself just fine either way.

So Mia and Clarence, though they probably weren't having a wonderful time being together, Freddie and Rose, though Rose was completely oblivious to the entirety of Freddie's affections and Freddie was helplessly obvious, and Olive and Tommy, who seemed to be enjoying themselves just fine. Everyone seemed to have found their place in the jovial and nearly overbearing atmosphere of the Caretti's party with another, and Vince was just where he expected himself to be, where he always remained, at his father's back. And Vince had become too accustomed with this situation, that he couldn't be bother of his own loneliness anymore. Love did not matter to him, or at least not in the manner that it was important to others, to Vince love was loyalty, protection, and pain. Love meant that one was not at the side of the one they loved but in front the loved, doing the work of the beloved. Fulfilling every wish and whim as commanded.

Mia narrowed her eyes in disbelief, feeling slightly taken aback by the sudden shift in dynamic. He was intelligent although Mia noticed instantly that someone was watching these events unfold, she turned ever so slightly and met eyes with Vince who seemed to be standing amongst a group of other people before sliding her gaze back to the other man, she would have to cut social conventions short in order to speak with Vince and decide whether the man dancing with her was an imminent threat (she was uncertain if he was). "I do believe I never caught your name."

@TheStoicist

@Lightning Quick

He stopped, feeling the eyes drifting upon them as well. That wasn't a healthy sign... Not one by any means. He didn't mind cutting the dance short under the gaze of the other person at this gathering he actually wanted to speak to, Vince Caretti. "Clarence. Clarence Varenzo. It's a pity we can't dance longer, you were quite the partner. Perhaps another time." He offered. As if there could be another time. This was probably the only chance he had to get this done. Still, you never knew with the Caretti people...

Rose smiled slightly as her father kissed her head. She turned to face the dancing couples with a look of longing in her eyes. Rose had always loved dancing, yet she had very rarely been asked to dance, probably because people were so frightened and intimidated by her father.

Rose had begged Leonor, whom Rose considered to be wonderful at dances like the Charleston and the One-Step,as Leonor often went out dancing, to teach her. Leonor had consented and taught Rose a few dance moves. Rose had longed to try them out and she was desperately hoping for someone to ask her to dance. Though she was sure that no one would ask her. The fact that no one would probably ask her to dance sadden Rose.

She turned to back to her friends, a look of slight sadness on her face. She hoped maybe Freddie caught the hint and would ask her what was wrong and he would ask her to dance when she told him.

Mia

Mia noticed the slight break in Clarence's demeanor as he stole a look towards Vince in what she assumed was interest. So, that was his goal. She nodded, retreating from his person before placing a kiss upon his cheek as a thank you for the dance. Despite the man's true intentions, she had had fun. "The name's Mia Venucitti and we won't meet again under such circumstances, it is truly a shame." She receded into the crowd of people before turning towards the opposite direction, she couldn't be seen if she wanted to figure out what Clarence wanted with Vince.

@Lightning Quick

He watched his most interesting partner yet leave. She seemed so certain... Like she assumed all of the rules to the game were written out and acted as if according to a strict play. Yet she held that in her watchful gaze incorrectly. Quite the contrary, the game was only just beginning. Each tile mid fall to scatter in unbeknownced directions to even himself. He would see her again. Maybe she was correct, maybe never under such circumstances, but who knows. Maybe this wouldn't be the last of that floral dress and fuschia heels he'd ever see on her.

He hoped not.

Maria smile as she stepped in the room. There were multiple bookshelves stacked to the top with various peices of literature. She hadn't read many of them as this was her father's private study, but she had glanced at the pages of many when she was a child.

Maria cleared her throat quietly, bringing her hands forward, folding them in front of her torso. She looked up at her father, still pacing in the room, "Well, father,

I do realize it is rather late, but I was wondering if I could have your approval to attend a party?" She looked up from the floor as she spoke. She never asked her father for much so, maybe he would say yes to this proposal. "And might I say, it does seem like you're under some distress. What seems to be the issue?"

@Beowulf

"Bah. It's nothing. My knees are just acting up again is all." God he hated getting old. His joints started to protest about the dumbest of things. But that wasn't all that was bothering him. "And the Carreti family, they're always a problem. Heard they're throwing a party even as we speak. Their getting in good with well known faces, I can just feel it." By that, he meant they were bribing and/or black mailing important figures, like say the mayor.

"But now for what you asked. I don't have any problems with you going to a party. Don't do anything you'll regret and anything that I would deem stupid."

Tommy Compton

"I do believe that this is the first time I've ever seen you actually bluff my dear Ollie." Tommy grinned a little as they moved around the room. He looked up and noticed Mia with the Varenzo boy, but said nothing to Olive, he knew she'd see it soon enough. Instead he pulled Olive closer as they moved away from Mia and Varenzo. Tommy knew Varenzo was smart enough not to cause a seen here, and even if he did, Tommy knew that Mia would make quick work of him. "As for the two left feet, Dear, I would say you're doing fantastic being my partner." Tommy smiled his genuine smile and with the thumb of the hand holding hers already, he stroked her hand as they moved together.

Carmen sighed as she saw everyone left her "Oh well..." she thought to herself, she quickly ran upstairs and grabbed her favorite book, The Trial. She smiled and ran back downstairs away from the crowds and leaned against the wall next to a small table with a vase filled with roses. She sighed and brought the book up to her eyes so she could read it but she could also watch everyone else, she tapped her foot to the sound of the music playing as she watched her sister blushed at the kiss and her father mingling with the guest. She gave a small hair toss and continued to read "Chapter 12" she thought to herself

Her foot giving a small tap to the wooden floor as she smiled softly reading her book "Tsk tsk, Johnny is deep trouble now....." she thought to herself and shook her head. She picked up her champagne glass she hid from her father and finished it off, She placed her fingers on her lips in case she burps but she didn't as her finger went back to holding the book she was reading.

"Yes, sir," said Freddie when Don Caretti told him to be in the study.

His eyes turned sad and worried when he realized Rose wanted to dance, and his heart broke when he knew that he could not dance with her. It also broke because he hated how sad she looked. It always broke his heart to see her sad, and he always tried to get her to cheer up when she was sad. Usually any joke he told, would get her to smile and when he knew he made his smile, it made his day. He wanted to very much, knowing it would make her smile but he knew that Don Caretti wouldn't approve of him doing so.

"Look at the poor thing," said Gene, whispering to her brother. "Go and dance with her, Freddie."

"I can't," Freddie hissed. "I don't want Don Caretti to get angry."

"Rose will stick up for you," said Gene. "What's the harm in asking her?"

Freddie sighed. He wanted to dance with Rose very badly. He was just fearful of what Don Caretti would do to them if he found out.

"Freddie wants to dance with you, Rose," said Gene. Leonor pushed Rose towards Freddie and Gene pushed Freddie towards Rose. The two were chest to chest.
