Fandom Into the fire (1x1 MzHyde/Gallifrog)

Kay didn't comment on Cliff's bed hair. Mostly because she had had her fair share of the look herself, not that she ever walked out her room and let anyone see it. Though, considering how her relationship was developing with John, she knew at some point he'd see her in her less glamourous state. Not that she'd mind, as she knew that'd happen especially when Fia was born. Both of them will look tired and more wrecked than they already do at times, from sharing night shifts if Fia wakes up and cries in the night.

She did however look on at Rinaa asleep in Elliott's arms and it made her smile. She looked like just your normal vulnerable teenager that needed her dad. She noticed how Cal called in her favour but didn't fully pay attention to the call. She wasn't the type of person to eavesdrop on people's phone calls, unless it was completely necessary. "Now that's a sight to see.." she said quietly to John, gesturing at Rinaa and Elliott. The fondness was evident in her voice.

John followed the gesture and had to smile at the sight of them. He took in just how comfortable the teenager looked, asleep in her fathers arms. An experience that most children had when they were very young, and wouldn't be seen dead doing such a thing as a teenager. And he also took note of how small and vulnerable she appeared too. Elliott was gazing at the teenager with fondness and love, there was all kinds of thoughts churning around in his head, the main one being that this kid was damn amazing, even if she lacked the belief to see it herself. Jay was looking at both of them in that same way. A fond smile spread over John's face. "It really is something else entirely" he whispered back.

"Qui" Cal whispered, the whole room had dropped to whispers since they realised the teenager was asleep. Elliott looked up. "You don't have to go back tonight, called in a favour. Deke's taking your place, shifting to your appearance to fool the people on guard. So make the most of it, yeah? For her sake." When Cal said her, she meant both Jay and Rinaa.

Kay smiled, it was clear to her how quick and comfortably Jay and Elliott fell into that parental role. She wouldn't say it, but seeing how they were made her admire them and think that maybe...just maybe, her and John could do it too. That things will fall into place when Fia is here and it won't be so scary. The three of them have her hope for her own fast approaching family. Kay rested her head on John's shoulder, in the crook of his neck.

She noticed how everyone was whispering so not to wake Rinaa, yet she still heard what Cal said to Elliott. She knew Elliott and Jay would appreciate that more than either would let on. For this very moment, life felt bright and hopeful, even if she knew deep down it may not stay that way.

"Thanks Cal, I owe you another." Elliott whispered back with sincerity. He owed Cal (and her gang) many times over now, and fully intended to clear the debt... eventually. "Same here, I owe you too." Jay replied. Cal doing this meant more to her than she was willing to say or even admit to herself. Cal recognised that, and noted it. John watched this scene with fondness, had somebody told him seven months ago that this would happen, he would have laughed it their face and told them to check into the nearest nuthouse, as they were totally and utterly off their rocker. But looking around now, it just seemed right. Chas was beginning to feel like he was the only one not paired up with anybody, John had Kay, Cal had Cliff, Elliott, Rinaa and Jay had each other. Maybe he should have taken Trish along or he could make friends with the blacksmith.

Cliff and Cal were the first to tap out. The former had taken the next few days off work, and was practically falling asleep in her chair. "So how'd the whole meeting your time travelling daughter from the future go?" John asked, now that he was sure Rinaa was asleep. "It wasn't what I was expecting.....but I didn't really know what to expect in the first place. She's pretty awesome as a person, but with flaws like every other person. The reason they are so strong is the whole impending death thing. It's amplifying them, and she's questioning her life up until this point and was it worth it. She's incredible...but I'm kinda biased."

Even though they were whispering, Kay could pick on the sincerity in all their voices. She also picked up on the fondness in John's look toward the three of them opposite them. Like him, she would have fought anyone if they told her she'd find the love of her life in someone who initially came across as a massive asshole, who unwillingly saved her ass, and she'd be starting a family with him. Not only that but to find her home with him and his best mate and adoptive kid.

Yet here she was experiencing exactly that and it felt right. She did feel slightly bad for Chas being the only one not paired up with anyone, having his wife on a completely planet. When Cal and Cliff turned in, she said her goodnight's to them both. Then John asked the question that was burning on all their minds. She listened to what Elliott had to say, smiling. "You have a right to be biased" she replied. "All decent parents are" she smirked.

"That's true" Chas agreed, being the only one who could really speak with any proper authority on the subject. "Literally every parent think stheir kid is better than everybody else's, that's why parent teacher meetings are such a pain in the ass with everybody else boasting about how great their kid is while you sit there thinking how wrong they are, cos your kid is clearly better." He rolled his eyes, relating from personal experience, as John well knew. He'd listened to Chas bitch about parenting many a time. It only seemed right considering how much of John's crap he put up with. "It's probably a good idea if we all agree to never compare our kids, or have favourites out of any of them, it'll only end badly if we do."

"Agreed" "Most definitly agreed" Jay and Elliott both felt that Rinaa suffered from this in her life, or at the very least, she compared herself to Fia, as they were closest in age. The teenager had said as much to Kay, that she thought Fia was the better person out of the two of them. "Yeah, same here."

When Chas replied, she looked over at him. She may only have experience of being the kid, but she definitely had heard the many rants her adoptive parents had with each other about teacher parent nights. They always thought she wasn't listening in, but she'd be that kid that'd hide at the top of the staircase and eavesdrop with her sister. Chas' words made her smirk, before glancing up at John as he replied with a pact to never compare their kids with each other.

She also agreed on that sentiment. "Agreed." She simply said, feeling like there was no point in sharing that Rinaa already compared herself to Fia. She didn't want to end the conversation on a bit of a negative. She just wished she could have the chance to make things different between Rinaa and Fia, but knew they wouldn't get the chance to resolve that feelings of competing with each other. Though the conversation did make herself suddenly think "oh fuck...we gotta think about the times she's old enough for school...would we even let her go to normal school? Or do we home school Fia?" None of these thoughts hit her until they spoke about it, which made the idea of being a mother scary once more.

There was really nothing left for John and Chas to say to Elliott or Jay that wasn't just rephrasing older questions or remarks. The latter on the other hand, had many questions that she wanted to ask. And as much as she was warming up to the famtourage, Jay didn't want them around for it. She'd also decided to throw caution to the wind and admit how she felt. And if that confession went awfully, she really did not want anybody to witness it. Without saying anything Jay, Elliott and the already asleep Rinaa had claimed the living room to sleep in. Neither of them said it, but John and Chas just knew they'd want to be as near their kid as possible. They didn't have a lot of time with her. Nobody had come up with an estimate as to exactly how much the teenager had left, nobody wanted to have such knowledge praying on their minds. It could be months, or it could be just days.

Back in the spare room, John fell back on the bed and sighed. He pulled off his tie and boots, dropping them beside the bed, the not paying any attention to where they went. He never did, just trusting that they would indeed be in roughly the same area the next time had need for them. He ran a hand through his hair, trying to get to grips with everything he'd seen and that had happened that day. There were no words that could convey exactly what he thought of the day. "One hell of a day, huh?" he muttered, half to himself, half to Kay.

(would have replied earlier, but the site has been down for me, and only came back recently)

Kay had a feeling that not much else would be said after that and that it wouldn't be long before everyone retired to their respective rooms, leaving Elliott and Jay in the living room with Rinaa, and of course it wasn't. Like John and Chas, she went into the spare room she had with John the night before and sat on the end of the bed so she could remove her boots, which she did.

She placed her boots beside her jacket on the floor beside the bed, which just happened to be nearby John's boots and tie. The way John's tie fell though, she knew it'd get lost under the bed which annoy him, so she partially tucked it in his boots so it wouldn't go astray. By this point she was getting tired, and laid back on the bed on her back, still fully dressed like he was. She smirked at his remark and nodded, "that's an understatement" she replied. "Felt like it was all happening at once" she continued. "I'm just reaaaaally hoping I don't get more morning sickness" she smirked.

(It's fine, it's been down for everyone)

"Well I'm not literate enough to convey how bad it actually is. LIt is all happening at once, somebody up or down there is having a great time screwing around with us all." John sighed, knowing that neither really were to blame, it was probably the bloody prophecy that wasn't letting him have any free will over his life. He nodded at her next remark " Same here once is enough for me, and if its going to be like that everyday, then I guess I'd best get used to it" What he didn't say was that he hoped he didn't get any nightmares that would result in him either waking up screaming or lashing out in his sleep. That was the last thing Kay needed to experience on top of everything else.

He pulled of his shirt and left it on top of his shoes. Unless he passed out or fell asleep without knowing it, John always slept shirtless. Elliott did the same thing, one of many habits he'd copied from his adoptive father. John lay back on the bed, tucking his hands behind his head.

Kay nodded at his comment, about the world screwing with them. It really did feel like that, she couldn't deny it. Her future really didn't seem like it was something she could control in the sense of making her own bloody decisions about what she wanted, and more importantly what both her and John wanted as a couple. When he said about once being enough for him, seeing her throwing up she rose an eyebrow and looked at him. "Think yourself lucky you're not the one actually having to vomit mate. Trust me, way worse for me than you" she smirked.

She meant it with no malice of course, but naturally it brought our her sass. She hated being sick at the best of times and this was no different. She'd rather deal with any of the other possible side effects that come with pregnancy, than the morning sickness. As he took his shirt off, it reminded her she was still intact fully dressed. Though she was used to sleeping fully clothed, she hated it, but it became such a habit to do so. Sleeping rough made her learn she couldn't exactly change to sleep. She slept in what she wore and moved on at first light. Eventually though, she did make herself change, by taking her jeans off, but she kept her vest on just incase she did wake up and needed to rush to the bathroom.

Laying back down, she laid on her back but her head in her favourite place that the nook of John's neck. "John? We'll be alright...won't we? With Fia and stuff?" She mused, staring up at the ceiling, now making it obvious she wasn't nearly as okay with the news as she was making out to everyone else.

"Fair point". He had to smirk at the answer, he expected no less from her. He'd spent many a morning puking his guts up (obviously for different reasons, but if he was become pregnant it really wouldn't surprise him, what with the way things were heading). The mental image made him smile slightly, and laugh hysterically internally. His vivid imagination was running wild trying to imagine what he'd look like pregnant. He did snap out of that frankly quite disturbing train of thought when Kay leant against him. He wrapped an arm around her, and leant his head against her, picking up on the fear and the insecurity in her tone.

The honest answer was that he really didn't know. He was still struggling to take it all in, but once it sunk in, he'd be able to do what he always did- adapt and make the bad and the unexpected into something good (or at the least, something tolerable). He'd gotten through the whole minefield of his feelings for Kay, even if it had taken him a long time to process everything (and he was nowhere near finished).

He spoke softly and reassuringly. "Yeah, we will be, even if it doesn't seem like it right now, we'll get there. It's just so much to take in, and neither of us are exactly coping with it. But we will, I know we will. If Elliott can deal with this crap happening in the wrong order then we sure as hell can deal with this" He kissed the top of her head. "We got this Kay we got this."

Hearing his reply to her sass over the puking, she knew he was expecting her to come.out with something. It's just how she always is, and she had been with him long enough now for him to know when she'd give as good as she got. Due to her just staring up at the ceiling, she didn't notice his smile at his internal thoughts and mental images, but if she had, she definitely would have asked him what was making him smile. Instead she focused on the fact that he lowered one arm round her and rested his head against hers.

The moment he began talking, she took note of his tone and how he always managed to soothe her thoughts when she really needed it when he spoke softly to her. The only other person in her life that ever had that power over her was her friend and sister. She listened to what he had to say, taking it all in. Hearing him say they did indeed have this helped her more than he could know. He made a massive valid point, that if Elliott could deal with his similar scenario, then so could they. Elliott was almost showing them up right now.

She closed her eyes briefly when he kissed the top of her head before the opening them. "You're right... I'm just being paranoid..." She replied, placing one hand on top of his arm.

"It's justifiable paranoia though." He replied, not going to deny that fact for one microsecond. He wasn't going to vent all his insecurities and apprehensions at that precise moment, but he was going to make sure Kay knew she wasn't alone in the whole 'I have no idea how any of this is going to turn out' mindset. "I may not be showing it, but I'm just as all over the place about this as you are. And at some point in the future you'll end up having to give me the whole 'Pull your bloody head out of your arse and stop doomsaying, you got this' speech."

He was thinking the same thing about Elliott showing them up. Not only did he have a daughter (who time travelled there from the future), he was meeting her as a teenager who was terminally ill. To make matters worse, she'd never known him, meaning he'd die at some point in the near future. And as if matters couldn't be bizarre enough, she was the kid he'd had with the girl he was so head over heels for, yet they weren't even together and had barely acknowledged the possibility of the other having mutual feelings. Credit where credit was due, Elliott really was one tough cookie, and their worries paled in comparison to his. The change of perspective made things seem so much more manageable for John, and he relaxed, the tension leaving him. "This is weird on various levels, but weird is normal at this stage, we'll figure it out."

(with the Christmas holidays over, I'll be back to my regular posting schedule tomorrow)

Kay didn't feel so stupid for being paranoid over the whole thing when John said it was justified. He had this way of making her not feel stupid for what she was thinking. She listened to him say about how he was just the same mentally as she was and when he spoke about the whole speech thing, she couldn't help but smirk. "I'll always give you that speech...it's like my...job" she replied, referring to all the times she's calmed him down and done exactly that...told him it'll be okay and they got this. It's one reason why it felt so weird that the roles were reversed.

She kept thinking about Elliott's scenario and how in reality, they have bloody lucky in comparison to Elliott and Jay. At least they were actually together and going through this in the right order. Elliott and Jay weren't and yet they were still taking it all in their stride like it's just another day at the office. She could only imagine Elliott giving them the speech and telling them both to why their heads out of their asses and toughen up. "It really is...but at least unlike Ell? We're experiencing this in the right order" she commented.

(That's cool, i did wonder if that's the case :) )

Even if it didn't show, he was relieved that she'd be willing to drag him out what ever hole of despair he could fall in. He didn't doubt that Chas would be perfectly willing to do it, but Kay being willing to do was different for various reasons. Kay seemed to be voicing his exact thoughts with the point about Elliott and Jay. The more he thought about it, he had to admire both of them for just getting on with. "Yeah, credit where credit is due to those two. I wouldn't want to be in their shoes." His tone conveyed the pride he felt for Elliott (and by proximity, Jay). Even though he'd only known the blue haired woman a few weeks it was difficult to imagine one without the other. They really were quite the pair.

"I can't believe I'm saying this, considering how we both took a dislike her that first time we met, but I feel more sorry for Jay, she's got this worse than Elliott has." He really couldn't fathom that he was saying those words. Jay had been abrasive, cold, stand-off ish and bossy when they'd first met that night with Scott lying unconscious bleeding out. And that facade had stayed, only being added to by her wide and varied set of skills-fighting, hacking and piloting. But different sides had begun to show, the more vulnerable, self loathing and caring sides respectively, mainly in the presence or the context of Elliott. He could respect her judgement and her skills now, maybe not fully trust her. "Not only is she still held back by the loss of her twin, she's losing her future daughter and can't do anything to stop it, except administer the same drug that nearly killed her. And she's going to lose Elliott too, who she clearly loves. I don't even want to think about how dark she could go after all this happens."

It may not have shave shown to Kay but that didn't matter to her. No matter how deep he fell down that dark hole, she'd be there to pick him back up. She wasn't just the mother of his child, or the woman who was in love with him...she was his partner, and she wouldn't stop fighting his corner, whether that be picking him back up when he was down, or celebrating the good times with him or fighting whatever was in his way beside him.

When he spoke about Jay and Elliott, she could hear the pride for them both in his voice and it actually made her smile slightly. It was rare thing to hear such pride come from John. She listened to what he said, about giving them credit when it's due and how he couldn't imagine what they must be feeling. Especially Jay. He was right, they both gave her the cold shoulder and didn't trust her at all not that long ago, now Kay particularly would gladly wrap her arms round the girl and help her through what she's going through if she was ever let in to do so.

"Same here... The girl has it so much tougher than we do and it really puts shit into perspective. I couldn't imagine being in her shoes and losing Fia...I don't know how she's doing it..how either of them are" she replied.

"I don't want to imagine being in her shoes full stop." He really didn't, it was rare that John thought of anybody he wouldn't want to swap lives with, for the chance to experience what a normal existance was like. (Though knowing him, he'd probably get bored and swap back to his old life, where it was consistently interesting, crazy and fucked up on various levels.) But Jay was different, and as Elliott had, the two were more similar than either would want to believe. He hadn't believed it at first, but John could see it now. The self destructive tendancies, cutting themselves off from others when in pain, trying to escape from the darkness of their past, the hard arse facade they personified and used to hide the depths beneath. And the whole having a dead twin thing, albeit through different circumstances. But by far the biggest similarity they had was that Elliott cared about both of them.

"I doubt they themselves even know how they're coping." John sighed, running a hand through his blond hair, sending it into a further state of disarray. "If I had to guess I'd say they had adopted of the mentality of "It's happened, we can't do anything to change that, so we might as well get on with it." in the hope that it'll help them cope. But I'm no psychiatrist......psychologist......whatever kind person is qualified to deal with this style of crap."

John was putting both their thoughts in a much better way than she felt she was and like him, she did want to swap lives with Jay at all right now. He may have not wanted to admit it or see it at first, but Kay certainly saw the similarities between him and Jay. They were like two peas in a pod as the saying goes.

"Either way they are far stronger than I think anyone gives them credit for. If I was in their shoes I'd probably just give up" she admitted. She really could see herself just holding her hands up and go 'fuck it, I'm done. I've had enough of all this being thrown onto of me. I'm out' then crumble to the floor. Whether anyone would let her do it or not. As she said that, she shifted ever so slightly, but remained on her back, even though she hated it, she always slept on her side, arm draped over John. Yet it seemed being pregnant was changing even the smallest things like this. She ran her fingertips back and forth across her stomach, whilst her other still remained on top of John's arm.

"That they are" was all John could say on the subject without repeating or reiterating what had been said earlier. He wasn't the kind to give up on anything, even if he did walk away and try not to get involved, he'd always get dragged back into it, no matter how hard he tried not to be. And he would bitch his way through the entire thing, but he was always there right where the universe believed he should be. Which at thí smoment in time seemed to be there, on the aline planet of his adopted son, millions of miles away from Earth, the only planet he'd truly ever known or claimed to somewhat understand. With Kay. Who he'd been inextricably linked to ever since that first night they'd met. Maybe he'd never figure out exactly how he felt, but he'd always be there, at her side.

Unconsciously his hand began to gently stroke her shoulder, a tiny gesture conveying magnitudes. His eyes closed, but he remained awake, his brain to busy fizzing with thoughts to let go. He tuned out the background noise, not that there was any to begin with. His breathing slowed, a sure sign that he'd soon fall asleep.

There wasn't anything to say on the subject matter, not without many repeats and boring themselves with their own words feeling like a broken record player. They knew how each other felt about the topic and how they both agreed Jay and Elliott were being so much stronger than both of them were in this moment.

As she laid there, she glanced up to see him closing his eyes, but she should tell from his breathing that he was still awake..for now. His unconscious nation of stroking her shoulder relaxing her greatly, which made her close her eyes. Once again, she felt like his actions were speaking so much more than he'd ever say verbally. She seemed to be the verbal one about how they felt, where as he used actions. She learned to live with that and accept it. She found her own breathing fell in time with his, and as his slowed, so did hers. Her hand that was on her stomach stopped moving and just draped across herself, as moments later she fell asleep in his arms.

The night was surprisingly calm for her. It wasn't without dreams though. She dreamt of Fia but there was no clear image of her in the dream. Just a blur but she knew it was their kid. She could hear Fia though. Kay was watching as Fia was trying to get Elliott to help her cause some kind of mischief and prank John in the apartment. Kay was pretending to not know it was going on whilst on the couch sketching. She could hear Fia giggling whilst Elliott was attempting to keep her quiet. And the dream continued until she woke up the next morning.

When John did nod off, his hand stopped moving, and dropped down. At first he slept easily, but that all changed. His dreams cape changed from inky blackness to bare concrete brick walls. John turned around, taking it all in. The high vaulted ceiling, reminiscent of a gothic cathedral. The light cast by the fires creating flickering shadows that warped and danced on the walls. The wooden floorboards once highly polished now lay splintered and cracked. The fires crackled randomly dispersed through-out the room. And the blood, splattered everywhere, on the walls, the floor, the marble of the altar, the floor of the cage, across John's arms and face, drenching his beaten up combat boots, pooling across the ground from the slaughtered lackeys.

His eyes dropped downwards, at the sound of coughing. The source was Chas lying on the ground, a claw pierced through his side, exposing the bone, the blood pooling from the wound, too red, too much, a fatal wound.
"Johnny....you did this....This is your fault....You hear me? YOU did this!" The cabbie hissed, hacking up blood as he spoke, his teeth gritted in pain. John staggered backwards, chest heaving "No....no.....no"

Back in reality, John's arm slipped from around Kay, raking down the side of his own arm, leaving a series of scratches. His face had lost all its blood, becoming pale white. His eye sockets seeming to hollow out and black. His whole body shook. "No.....no....no......no" He muttered, the fear evident in his tone.

Kay at first for a good chunk of the night didn't wake up and be aware of John's fearful night terror. It was most of the night and it was the early hours of the morning when something in her dream told her she needed to wake up. Was it her gut feeling or Fia? She had no idea, but she woke up and rubbed her eyes. It was then she saw John scratching at his arms and heard the fear in his voice.

A scene she was all too familiar with, when she was on the streets and she had her night terrors, or when she was a kid and had them over losing her parents. She slid out of under him and sat up, before pulling him into her, cradling him whilst keeping his hands away from his arms so she couldn't scratch himself anymore. She gently rocked with him and soothingly spoke to him, her lips close to his ear, so her voice could break through to his subconscious.

"Shhh... It's not real...it's just a dream...I'm here John...I'm here. You're not alone. I've got you" she kept saying over and over, every now and then kissing the top of his head. "I've got you babe....it's gonna be okay. I love you" she said some more, her tone reassuring, loving and soothing. She didn't even look for the time, she didn't care. All that mattered to her was calming John down, and if that meant she stayed awake for hours on end, then so be it.

John's dreamworld (nightmare world?) had completly blotted out all traces of the outside world, so Kay's voice didn't even penetrate though the layers of dream spun from a mixture of fear and old memories. He turned, staggered backwards, trying to get away, from it all, but he couldn't. His boot caught on something, a corpse behind him, and sent him sprawling backwards. It was Jay, her blue hair dyed red with blood. The assassin's head had been severed from her body and lay several metres away. The usually expressive silver eyes now glassy and utterly dead. He scrambled to his feet once again, his eye falling on another corpse, a teenager this time. He didn't have look beyond the mowhawk and the pierced ears to know who it was. Beside her body lay the corpses of two wolves, one tan brown, the other jet black. Howling with grief over the corpses was the third wolf, he knew, somehow, that these were Rinaa's.

"John! Run!" came the shout, John spun in time to see Elliott beginning to run
But he didn't make it, the sword broke through his chest, spearing his heart dead centre. The blade was pulled out, causing Elliott to spasm, spewing blood from his chest and mouth, before collapsing, convulsing, before falling still, his body spread eagled on the ground. Standing over the body was a child, with the red eyes characteristic of possession. "Look at them John, they died because of you.....you can't didn't save them. You failed to protect them John.....just like you did to me." Then came the blade, breaking through his flesh.

It was that event, the stabbing, that finally jolted John out of it. Up until then, he'd been tossing and turning, all the time muttering the word 'no' over and over again. The final word he screamed, and it wasn't 'no' , it was a name- Astra. He woke with a gasp, jolted straight upright and out of Kay's grip. His eyes now open, combined with pallor of his skin, and the darkness around his eye sockets, he looked haunted. Just as he had in the photos as a patient of Ravenscar asylum.

Even if he couldn't hear her, she still kept trying to talk to him, still kept hold of him, and stayed awake to go through this with him. He was so haunted by whatever he was seeing and it breaking her heart immensely. There was no way she was going to go sleep and let him go. She swore to be there for him through everything and she was going to stick to her word. Even if it didn't seem to be doing anything. She noted how he said the name Astra, she knew he was haunted by not being to save a child as she remembered vaguely being told about it from Chas once. She put two and two together and guessed Astra was the kid.

When he did wake and jolt out of her arms, she knew he had woken up. The fear in his eyes, the way he looked, she recognised it from those photos of Ravenscar. She very carefully sat forward and placed her hand delicately on his back. "John?" She asked softly. "Come here..." She said, lightly tugging at him to pull him back into her protective grip. "I'm here for you", she reassured him. "I'm here" she repeated, her tone still soft. There was no way she was going to leave him now. Even if he refused her, she knew he needed her and she was going to help in whatever way she could.
