Fandom Into the fire (1x1 MzHyde/Gallifrog)

Kay nodded as she started on her coffee, that first hit of caffeine satisfying her system greatly. "She is..or was. Don't even know what happened to her. Which considering she became my sister is pretty shit of me." She replied. Sam to her was like Chas to John in many ways.

"You woulda likes her I reckon. She's quite the character, as you might have guessed from the party photos I showed you." She added, drinking more coffee. It was a few minutes before the waitress came over with their food, placing it down on the table. "Two waffles and eggs!" She stayed like most waitresses around these parts would say as they sat the plates down before walking away.

It would have clear now to John that every time she did come over, Kay looked away slightly to hide her face. Kay knew if she got recognised, everyone would be on her and would no doubt use the cafe's phone to call her adoptive parents to make them come over. That was the last thing she wanted as for one, they'd ask a million questions about John and two, drill her about not staying in touch and where she was. Both of which she didn't want to answer because she didn't want to put them into any possible danger.

John could tell and had gathered from what she told him, that she and Sam were like him and Chas. "I gathered that much. From what you've said she sounds like my sister, who is also quite the character." He thought back to the photos he had shown Kay from Sheryl's birthday, the ones where he was in the mini-skirt. Life wasn't easy back then, but compared to his life now, it was.

He noticed that Kay was hiding her face. No doubt there were people here that would recognise her and make an incredible fuss, and also draw a ton of attention to Kay. Attention that neither of them needed. He also knew that if anyone did, he would lie his head off to make sure nobody knew who she truly was. John started to eat, and Kay was right, the food was indeed excellent.

(last post)

Kay smiled, she remembered those photos he shared with her and she could definitely imagine how they'd be similar in personality.

With the food in front of them, she began to eat and it was exactly how she remembered. She loved she could have them again and she knew deep down if it wasn't for John and his House of Mystery she probably wouldn't ever have had them again. She barely spoke as she ate due to just really enjoying her childhood favourite.

Deep down she knew the risk coming here was huge and for some people probably not worth it, but she was glad she was taking the risk. It was easier doing it with company aswell. She also found it still amazing that in one moment she was an hour away from London and in minutes she was across the pond.

John didn't talk much either, savouring the food in silence. He would be lying if he said he hadn't been listening to the conversations of the other diners. He was nosy like that. Plus you never quite knew what you were going to hear. The main headline of the day seemed to be either about yet another oncoming alien invasion invasion and the JL negotitaions accompanying it or whatever crappy soap had been on the night before.

He made a mental note to look into the alien thing and see how true it was. The JL tended to leave him out of most things and that suited him perfectly. He was the magical con guy, and he knew that was his only role. (That and scape goat). Meal finished he sat back.

Whilst John was eavesdropping on conversations from the other diners, Kay was acutely aware that the owner and chef in the kitchen kept muttering about their table to the waitress, due to their booth being opposite.

She soon finished after John did and side eyed the kitchen area. As she thought, muttering was still going on. She hoped she was just being paranoid because it's been so long since she was here... 6 years to be precise. She pretty much downed the last bit of coffee, putting the mug down as the waitress came over to grab their plates. "Kay isn't it?" She asked.

"Great(!)" she thought to herself. Looking up and she shook her head, "No sorry" she lied. "You sure? You look exactly like her." The waitress, whose name tag said Irene replied back.

But off course she was recognised. It was a risk, and he had no doubt Kay had known that when she picked this place. So when the waitress asked again, Johzn joined in the lies. He hoped that the fact that he spoke with an evident British accent combined with what he was saying would be enough for her to believe him.

"She just has one of those faces, and besides, neither of us have been to this part of the States before."

Kay glanced at him when he pitched in with the lies. Something she was thankful for. She did indeed know it was a risk coming here, she just hoped it was all new staff and she wouldn't be recognised.

Irene looked at John when he spoke, hearing the accent. "Oh I see. Must be a doppelganger or something!" She laughed. "Then I apologise for the mistaken identity!" She said one last time before walking away with their empty plates. Kay noticed that Irene shook her head at the Chef Max, confirming her suspicions that they were indeed talking about her.

Thankfully, the lies worked. And had the waitress questioned them more, John would have proceeded to tell a huge pile of shite, making up an entire fake identity for himself and Kay on the spot, doing nothing short of pulling out fake ID to back up his facts. But it didn't come to that

As soon as she was out of earshot John shook his head and said quietly "That could have been a lot worse."

"mmhm" Kay began to reply. "She doesn't normally back down that easily. So I'm surprised to be honest. If Max comes over?" She said, gesturing to the chef, "then it will be harder to fool him. He's close to my folks, so he'd be Hella harder to fool" she explained.

She actually figured it was just John's accent that made Irene back down. She was always THAT type of American when it came to the British accent. Of course, Kay still had hers but her Seattle accent was gelled with it so a lot of people never really knew where she was from half the time.

Of course, there was that part of Kay that would love to go 'hey Irene, missed you' and pretend her life hasn't been the most screwed up rollercoaster someone could imagine, but she refused to add anymore risk to her just being here.

Low and behold her main concern came true, Max came over with the bill. "Your check...Kay" He said, trying to catch her out.

When she explained about Max, he nodded. "If that happens I'll do my best to throw him off, the scent, just go with whatever I say." It looked like they might have gotten away with it too, but then lo and behold the chef did come over. It was a testimony he supposed, to how much they did care about her, even if they hadn't seen her in years.

They'd started the lies, and were committed to it. So before Kay could speak, and potentially incriminate himself John spoke up. "not to be rude or anything, but we've already done this whole palaver. I appreciate the fact that you know your customers so well and all that jazz, but neither of us have been here before, and neither of us is called Kay. I'm Matt and her name is Amy."

Kay nodded when he said about to just go along with whatever he says. She was completely okay with that. She knew lying was the only way to protect these people.

When she saw Max come over and say her name, she was about to say something but John beat her to it. She nodded at what John said looking at Max, "we're just on a road trip" she added, going along with his story. Max raised an eyebrow at them both, "I know thats bollocks, only Kay has hair like that in this place." He remarked, determined to get the truth out of her.

"Popular colouring nowadays back in the UK... where we're from" she added quickly. "Matt here likes it" she quipped.

John had to give it to Max, he was determined to try and find a hole in their little ruse. And the roadtrip thing was a stroke of genius. It gave him so much to work with and bullshit.

He smiled at Kay's hair comment, a completly different smile to his usual smirk or Constantine grin, this looked completly genuine and normal and totally un-John-like., woth a slight hint of guilty embarrassment. "Guilty as charged. It really suits her. Funny thing, herself and three of her childhood mates, one of them being my sister, all got their hair done that colour and style as some kind of show of friendship or whatever." He rolled his eyes "women, you know how they are."

Kay noticed John reaction to her little quip about him liking her hair the way it was. She had to think and wonder if she just caught a genuine thing through a lie of hers.

Max was scrutinising their replies, sure John's seemed plausible, it did seem like a typical female move to do. He nodded suspiciously, "they do do some weird things in the name of friendship" he replied to John. Kay wasn't sure how to respond to that, she just rolled her eyes "weird, normal... Subject to personal interpretation there. Don't stop this one from calling me his little hot head" she quipped, deciding to really push the boundaries in the hopes Max would get uncomfortable and walk away. She almost used the FlameBird line but knew better of it.

"Oh tell me about it." John kept in character issuing a fond groan, before continuing with his next point, extendeing the lies further. "I have three sisters, who I love to bits, but they do the strangest things when around other girls." He gestured on the word "strangest."

He looked back at Kay, smiling again. "Nope it doesn't, she pretends to be embarrassed by it, but secretly she loves it."

Max couldn't help but smirk at John's little retort to Kay's comment. "Take it you two are an item then?" He asked.

"So... Why Seattle? Not many couples come here" Max asked, changing the subject. Kay wished he'd just give up at this point but she knew Max too well. In this time she used the awkward questioning to put the money down for their food. She always kept a small oint of US dollars in her wallet as a memory thing more than anything but it came in handy now. "The music scene. We're both music buffs" she finally replied. "Matt more though" she added

"Yeah, we are." The best lies were always the ones either based in truth or working off the assumptions of the person you were trying to decieve. And in this case Max's idea that they were a couple worked perfectly in their favour.

"I'm not that much of music buff, she's exaggerating. The only thing I really know is every punk band that ever crawled out of the London sewers. Amy's trying to convert me to other music types. And when we were planning this trip, we kind of just made a list of everywhere we wanted to go in the States, and Seattle was one of them."

Max nodded, finding his assumption was correct. He noticed how Kay smiled at John confirming how they were a couple. He figured they were either INA long term relationship and the smile was out of pride or they were in a new relationship.

He listened to John's reply about why they were in Seattle. "Ever the modest one this guy. But yeah, trying to get this one to listen to anything other than old 80s punk is a task and a half but it makes life interesting" Kay chuckled.

"Well in that case you both should check out the music museum. Five floors of music memorabilia and history and all music genres. Located in Uptown." Max explained, taking the tray with the money. "Well sorry for mistaking your bird for a girl I know. Her folks have been worried sick not hearing from her for two years now. She looks the spitting image of Kay" Max continued. "She was a good kid, would always blame our son for scratching or burning things in our tables because he would keep flirting with her" he laughed.

"Low blow Max..low blow" Kay thought to herself.

"80s punk is good though" John retorted, pretending to be pissed off, but clearly not actually pissed off. He was acting as if this was an age old arguement, something the two of them had always been bickering over. "Thanks for the idea."

John couldn't help but smirk at Max's tale of young Kay, even though Kay had already told him that. "Ah, yer grand" John replied, shrugging the case of mistaken identity off as if it was no big deal. "This Kay person sounds like a right character. I'm sure she'll wander back eventually." He looked at Kay, "we'd best be off then."

Both Kay and Max chuckled at John's little pissed off act. Both chuckling for different reasons though. Kay found it funny because she too likes old school punk and all genres of rock and he knew that....of so she guessed considering the tees she's worn around his place.

Kay just smiled as sweetly as she could when Max apologised. She was so glad he had finally caved and believed them. She narrowed her eyes at John though when he said what he did. There was still warmth in her eyes though at him. "Yeah, for a lot of stuff to explore and all that" Kay added, standing up.

"Well I hope you two enjoy Seattle and the rest of your trip! You two sure seem to gel well together" Max remarked. "What the hell Max?! No need...it's sweet but no need for that" she thought. She knew EXACTLY why he said that. There was still a little bit of him trying to catch them out. "Thanks. Anyway, Matt ready?" She turned her attention to John.

John smiled "we will, no doubt." He replied to Max, also relieved to be believed. He was beginning to wonder whetehr he would literally have to pull out fake ID and magic an entire gallery of fake photos onto his phone for the chef to believe him.

He turning to Kay with a smile "Yup I am" He replied, getting up and heading towards the door.

Kay walked out behind John, knowing that Max was no doubt watching so she snaked her arm round his lower back until they were at least out of eyeshot.
Sighing outside she almost groaned. "Urgh..I forgot how hard Max is to crack. He's always been like that. I remember when he'd grill Sam on every date she'd bring in. The poor girls were mortified every time." she remarked.

"Memo to self though, if I ever end up back here I'm wearing a damn wig" she smirked.

John knew exactly what Kay was doing when he felt her arm around his back, so he did the same. "At least you gave me somewhat of a heads up or I would have spouted some even stupider bullshite than I already did." He replied, onece he was certain they were out of earshot, it was clear he was trying not to laugh.

"I agree with that. Well, looks like I'll have to do the same if I go back. And wear something else, this get up is kinda memorable." He gestured at his trenchcoat and shirt.

Kay chuckled, "I may be a snarky cow but I wouldn't subject anyone to Max's grilling without a warning! Even I'm not that cruel" she laughed. Even John deserved a warning.

She smirked when he agreed to her wig comment. She had to admit his little aesthetic was a memorable look. She'd even go as far as to say it's iconic to him. "True that. Don't think we'd fool anyone a second time around." She replied, trying to imagine herself in a wig. "Not sure what hair colour I'd go for though" she jokingly mused.

He smirked, and then age the question serious thought. Like his trenchcoat, tie and shirt combo, Kay's hair was iconic, and had quite nearly screwed them over back when talking to Max. "How 'bout we swap hair colour, you go blond, and I'll go your colour?" He joked, knowing full well he would look ridiculous with red/ombre hair.

As they walked away, John knew it would be best to return to The House, before anybody else from her past spotted her. Espescially since Max had mentioned that Kay's adoptive parents were still on the lookout for her. "I say we head back to The House, before anybody else recognises us and we have to go through that whole charade again."

Kay burst into genuine laughter when he said about swapping hair colour. She wasn't sure she could see herself as blonde but the thought of John with her ombre hair really got her laughing. "Only of you want me crying with laughter" she retorted.

She composed herself when he suggested heading back and she nodded in agreement. "Agreed. There's only so many people we could fool and my folks are definitely NOT two of them" Kay replied. She knew if it was under any other circumstances, she'd have taken John to see her folks and see if Sam was still around but it wasnt under different circumstances, so it was 100% a no go.
