Autumn made the Orients more beautiful. The red, auburn trees with patches of green shrubbery gave the land the look of fire corals among the grey leaf-strewn cobble-stone roads and the black blue roofs of the white and red wooden houses.
Kenren, Chenglei, and the victorious warship fleet had 'officially' returned to their homeland late in the winter to be welcomed by the joyous cries of the people, whose wonder, praise, and prayers for good fortune fell mainly on the swordsman after the prince convinced him to enter the capital in his gargantuan dragon form, with Kenren sitting on his claw.
The existence and prowess of dragons had been spread far and wide since the war, and all of the people were relieved to have a familiar face, the man who had saved many families during the Taisho clan's rise to power be their protector . . . and now, the consort of the prince.
It was a huge culture shock when the two announced their betrothal. Even more that Chenglei Zhou was going to be the one and only consort of the prince, that when Kenren welcomed all of his siblings and proposed the fighting to stop and the unity of their homeland, it didn't quite get as much startling attention as the fact that the new emperor loved men.
"Chenglei." corrected Kenren, whenever someone made that mistake. "Your emperor doesn't love men, only he." for the prince liked women, but Chenglei was the only person he felt this way about. And a lot of female fans suddenly blossomed all over the land, stalking the couple wherever they went and giggling madly when they saw them. Foreigners even visited the country just to see these two handsome men and scream whenever the one did so much as lean to say something to the other. Ladies fainted whenever Chenglei was his charming, suave, flirting self around Kenren who did his utmost not to smile embarrassingly.
Not only that, poems and stories of men in love erupted among the younger Orientals, and somehow . . . . somehow, the fans were able to dig up their love story and tell everyone about it. There were now paintings of a young, strong, dashing commoner saving a hunted, fragile. prince who had to dress like a woman. And of the gold dragon of luck and happiness saving his fallen beloved from the sky before they faced the black dragon together.
Kenren face-palmed, laughing. "Why do I always look so effeminate in these paintings? They're even secretly calling me a bottom, How did they know I like being bottom, Chenglei? These women are scarier than our shinobi."
The two definitely skyrocketed the Orient's tourist attractions, which gave the merchants a lot of profit selling the fans water-color posters and sculptures of their love; somewhere in Chingpo, the "Heroes of Holt" stall was now gone to be replaced by the Heroes of Midgard Guild, whose current best seller is an enchanted set of very expensive moving models of Chenglei and Kenren doing lovey-dovey things. At least the royal court was getting a lot of money taxing them, which allowed them to pay all the soldiers they owed wages for. Currently the royal funds were wanting, but at least they paid all their debts.
The birds were chirping in the breezy auburn forest. Kenren's breath came out in mists as he crouched inside one of the hay covered stalls in a stable, right beside a huffing mare who was having her first foal. The wind chime in a nearby farm house tinkled in the breeze, as suddenly the first little whinny of a baby horse filled the stable.
"Oh, Chenglei, Chenglei, Tsumiki, granny. it's a girl!" cried the prince happily.
