Fantasy Howl's Flying Castle (Finished! ---Whoo! (*^▽^)/)

Lydia groaned unhappily as she failed again to get a decent hit with her hammer on even one of these creatures, though unhappiness turned to pain as the creature instead struck her.

She fell back before inching away and the realization hit her that if she should lose consciousness, the dragon may be able to take her over like he had Seifer. She shook her head slowly as the thought occurred before she scrambled to her feet and retreated, not willing to risk more of herself, especially seeing that many of the creatures that had emerged from the skull were now fleeing.

" Victory! "

Serena's giant wave of water bowled over the monster about to strike Lydia and splashed over the giant helmed skull, sizzling the flames out into steam and smoke; Chenglei's wind sickles sliced the flaming monster after Serena into steaks.

As Lydia tried to escape, Frey, with a frightened Ymir on top who was clinging on to the saddle, charged with his horns down --- wham ---- the stag and the kabuki dancer was sent flying into the air from a swung chin as the monster got up.

"Serena, catch them!" pointed James at the two, as he sprinted towards Lydia who was bit on the leg and tripped.

The monster raised its chin, but a jet of white light collided with it as it fell. A loud thump reverberated through the air as the chin struck a shimmering white arcane barrier above Lydia. Unfazed, the monster struck again, and on the second it roared, the amethysts on its jaw aglow with manna as it gathered more power. There was no time to cast another spell --- James slid under and hugged her just before it fell, shattered his shields and slammed them both.

Boom

Muffled thunder rang across the valley as it seized up from a stunning electric shock and one of the group finished it off.

The battle was won.

"On it!" Serena yelled back, still playing 'Wesser Geige' as she spiraled her aim a bit, making a slow swirling pool in midair. The blonde made sure to have the glowing buck and Ymir to land safely in the water, pillowing their landing first before they can get on the ground. Then she asked out loud as her run changed into a trot, now that creature stopped chasing her...and they have steaks! Great! More food!

"Is everyone alright?"

"My ribs hurt...but I'm fine." Chenglei's voice echoed in the hollow skull as he picked himself up, the monster that was once on top of him is now cut up into diced pieces...It seems Chenglei didn't appreciate being crushed at all. The soldier used his sheath to pull himself up and stood. Now looking around the skull as he wanted to know what happened to the person in here.

Serena checked on Frey and Ymir, making sure that they are alright. "Are you two okay?" She asked worriedly.

As Lydia went to run past Frey, she felt her leg get caught and fell to the ground, sprawling on her stomach before she turned over to kick at the thing that had just caught her leg and as it raised its chin, she curled up and covered her head only to hear the loud thump. She risked a peek under her arm to see the shimmering barrier above her and looked around, slightly surprised. She flinched as the monster roared and as it glowed, she started trying to get away again before it could strike, but before she could, James arms were around her and she squinted her eyes shut as only moments later, the creature was on both of them.

Her fingers had curled into the fabric of his uniform, grasping it tightly as she gasped beneath the weight of the creature and tilted her head to look up at James, "J-J-J-James...." she shook him gently before she wriggled to turn and try to use her arms and legs to push the monster off of them, "y-y-y-you..." she gasped again, if James didn't know better, he might think that she was crying. Of course, he probably did know better and thought that she was crying.

When the monster was finally not pinning them down anymore, Lydia curled up and wrapped her arms over the tops of her knees, her face burying against them.

"Together --- push!" James, grunting, rolled the heavy beast off together with Lydia. "Are you in pain, tell me where it hurts?" he said immediately, crouching beside her.

Frey bopped Serena's head affectionately, while Ymir was still a little shaken. "N-no, not alright. J-just give me a while --- hoo, hooo." she breathed in and out. "Is Lord Zhou --- oh, he's alright." she glanced at Lydia and James. "I think Lydia's hurt bad."

At that Frey immediately got up and galloped to a halt beside James and lay down, showing the side where the potion bags are. The ethereal stag's chest was cracked, revealing the bright blue manna that was its core.

Meanwhile, Chenglei would find two bodies inside the skull. One was charred and half-eaten, wearing clothes that are boulder grey. The mask was off revealing a face that had been covered for so long in the secret service of the prince that it was as pale as ice.

The other body was buried in a mound of ice, almost entirely melted from Serena's fire. And it seemed to be breathing, but barely and so slow.

"Lord . . . Zhou . . ." it whispered in the dark. "Run, hide. Crows . . . is the deathknight. Betrayed Bertrand . . . went after him . . . don't know where --- cough, cough --- a black dragon, came . . . don't let it follow you to camp . . . This is a trap . . ."

Lydia just didn't even know what to say to James. She felt horrible and he was making her feel worse. So she didn't say anything about it, instead she drew her handkerchief from beneath the wide sash around her waist and used it to dry her eyes, "n-no... I-I'm fine... ju-just go... and... um... see who they killed."

She struggled to get to her feet and winced as she did so, kneeling as Frey came up and lay down next to James, her brow furrowed and she shook her head, smiling warmly to Frey before she shifted her position and crawled over to him, petting the side of his neck and pressing her forehead to his, "I-I'll help Frey, you.. you check with Chenglei.

She was trying to be cheerful, but it sounded off.

Serena giggled and bopped her head back at Frey affectionately. "You're welcome Frey." As she watched the buck quickly go to the magical couple, the blonde violinist looked over at Ymir and said. "Alright...we should take a break...Come on, let me help you." She offered a hand to the Illusionist and smiled warmly.

Back in the skull, Chenglei walked closer to the pair of bodies with a grim look and sucked in air as he hears one of them talking. So one of his men is still alive. The blond oriental dropped to his knees and checked on the soldier who's barely alive, listening carefully as he finds all the injuries and then gritted his teeth.

It was a trap...this whole time, it was a trap...

"...Thank you...Please, rest. I'll bring a potion in here for you." Chenglei quietly told him and stood up again to walk out of the skull. Only to see James coming over. The older Pendragon will notice how Chenglei's expression was strained despite the smile; to anyone else it looked like he was glad to finding something, but to someone who knows about his childhood past, it's not a comforting smile. It's a smile that spelled trouble for them. All of them.

"Ah, Young Pendragon, mind telling Prince Kenren that we cannot come back to camp." Chenglei quietly muttered, acting like it was a normal thing to announce as if he didn't want to draw attention to himself. "It seems the deathknight that was chasing Bertrand is here with us and is chasing him right now...with the black dragon...and was disguised as crows..." His words sounded sharp and unforgiving, very grave coming from the normally dramatic and friendly soldier.

"This was a trap to bring that deathknight back to camp. Let the Prince know, James....and watch over the soldier in there...I'm bringing a potion..." With that, Chenglei walked towards the buck to grab a potion from one of the bags it's carrying and came back in the skull.

"Anything from the prince?" He asked calmly and coldly, wondering if his injured comrade is still alive right now...

"Alright." said James in a faltering voice. He looked away, then stood up to meet with the swordsman; the silver stag made a 'nuuur-ing' sound and bopped Lydia's head comfortingly, blinking at her with curious worried eyes.

After a few moments, Chenglei would find James with a couple of empty potion bottles beside him and rolling bandages around the injured man's wounds. "He said to continue acting normally, leave the one who's dead and then head back to camp. They'll move the real camp somewhere else and prepare an ambush." he said, accepting the potion Chenglei retrieved for his comrade. "Your friend's stabilizing, but the rest of his wounds are beyond my skill to heal. He needs my sister. Don't tell Ymir, I don't think she's good at acting in the presence of real danger --- what about you? You alright?" he looked him over.

With a last check of pulse and breathing on the surviving scout, James arranged his face into one of relief, then stepped out of the helmed skull, announcing. "We've got one scout injured, but alive. Prepare to leave, everyone, we're going back to camp immediately."

The tree's branches creaked and cracked as it swayed and unmistakably begin to dance. Amber eyes popped open from the waving trunk. "Hoooom, bararummmm, esa theli on!"

Johnny came up beside Echo, his jaw had dropped. "It's talking. And dancing. Echo, it's a talking and dancing tree!" he pointed at it, flabbergasted. "It likes your voice."

Soon it seemed the whole forest was waking up to booming and trumpeting "hoooms" and "huuums".

Katsuya Katsuya

"Very well...I'm doing fine...just pain on my ribs and hate seeing a friend suffer like this." Chenglei answered calmly but then his smile turned a bit warmer at James.

"Thank you for asking and for taking care of my friend." The soldier really did appreciated it. So he made the decision on not telling Ymir, asking James if Lydia still has his bee and to just inform her through that.

"Or Perhaps it's best we don't tell anybody about this. As I remember it, Lydia can barely hide her expression and Serena will be angry..." He's asking James as he knows Lydia and Serena better than Chenglei. He wants to believe the girls will understand on their reasoning once they ambush the deathknight. The blond soldier carried the injured ninja in his arms supporting his back and legs as they made their way out of the skull. Chenglei looked happy for finding someone alive and asked the glowing buck if he's allowed to lay on him while they headed back to camp.

Echo smiled as she sang, watching the tree dancing is definitely nice to see; normally plants grow whenever she sang so...to know a real and thinking tree really likes her voice is a real treat.

Then she blinked in shock when the whole forest is creating hoooms and huuums. She wondered if the whole forest is just like this tree.

"Ask it something, love." Echo suggested once she finished singing her mother's song and then nods her head down a bit as a bow of sorts. "Thank you for liking my song. I'm glad you enjoy yourself." She smiled at it.

Lydia let out a trembling sigh and closed her eyes briefly to the sound of James voice but it was only a moment before Frey bopped her head and she smiled at his affection and pet him again before rifling through the bag of potions to find one she could give to him to heal the wound he had obtained.

She slumped down next to Frey after giving him the potion and stroked his neck gently, her green eyes just scanning over him as she thought. Her expression worked through an assortment of emotions, anger, frustration, sadness, determination and finally as James emerged with Chenglei and the wounded soldier, she appeared worried. She smiled though in relief that they had found someone alive and ambled to her feet to near them, "... and Bertrand? Was there... any sign?"

" Minutes ago, Jagged arch, Giant skull hill "

" I don't like keeping secrets from Lydia." said James, subconsciously running his fingers across the palm where, only three days ago, she traced the runes telling him she's his partner, that supporting him was what she was there for. Though he felt put out that she didn't feel the same way about him.

If she needed space, he can respect that, he's seen her make that face before when she failed to rain fire on those attacking ships in Holt. He's seen her hung her head that way every time she failed in making a difference. He just wished she didn't pretend, made him feel like he couldn't be trusted. He didn't like seeing her sad either, and feeling helpless to help because she told him to go, instead of falling into his arms and asking for affection. It'd be fine if she had a close friend she could get comfort from, but he wasn't sure if she talked about things like that to the other girls.

Realizing that he had spaced out, James brought himself back to the matter at hand. "Though I'm worried about the dragon's soul inside her. I don't want it to hear our plans. Alright, Chenglei, I won't tell the others, the ones who'll know will just be you and me. Let's go."

Four people to protect. James knew he couldn't protect them all if whatever was watching them suddenly attacked with the power of a deathknight or a dragon for that matter. He gripped Chenglei's shoulder. "Protect them, okay?"

Once they came out, James shook his head at Lydia. "No sign. I've had my bees spread out since before we got here. I didn't find anything."

Before the pair reached where Lydia was, Chenglei nodded at James, his eyes glinted seriously. "You too..." It's something they understand as older brothers with crazy siblings and as guys who are in love. So there's no way that he's letting James down.

When he heard Lydia's question, the blond oriental smiled at her though looking grim. "None what so ever." Then he added. "Come on. We are to return to the campsite." Once he makes sure the wounded soldier is okay on Frey and Ymir can breathe again, Chenglei lead the group back to their campsite, always looking around and checking on the others in case they needed help or something.

Lydia nodded slowly, her green eyes watery and slightly red, her face relaxed but not happy and she went to collect her bag and hammer which she had left beside Frey.

When they started moving again, Lydia moved close to James and collected his hand, twining her fingers tightly and reassuringly in his, "I-I'm sorry James... for... putting you in... a position like that," she said sincerely and calmly, "I d-don't... I don't want you to feel like you have to protect me."

Lydia looked down at her feet as they walked. She realized she was doubly endangering him by charging in as she had, once because he felt the need to protect her and twice because if he hadn't protected her, she could have fallen under the dragon's control. She wanted to be a partner that he could rely on and in her current state, that just wasn't something she could do and it made her feel horrible, "I... can't fight again, James. I don't want you putting yourself at risk for me. I couldn't bear it if something happened to you because of me."

She squeezed his hand, her other hand moving to lay atop his arm as she rubbed it gently. It was a tough choice to make. She hated being on the sidelines, hated sitting out of battles and letting the people she cared about fight them, but she felt like she was back to being completely useless after she had gained so much confidence and ability in her magic, only to have that taken away by the dragon invading her soul. She winced as she thought about it, her eyes squinting closed a moment as she squeezed James' arm and hand again.

Maxamillion held his head, where it had cracked against the ground when one of the beasts had smashed down on him, he snorted and rubbed his nose as he looked over the creature's bodies, his green goggles now planted over his eyes, looking for any sign of magic emanating off the body, perhaps the crystals they were made of could be useful. He had little worry for his injuries, though blood oozed from the cut in his forehead, he was more interested in possibly harnessing these crystals for some kind of use, even if it was just for weapons. He struggled to pick up one of the creatures limbs, wondering how heavy they actually were.

For a mechanic used to fixing and lifting the heavy machinery of the warships, the limbs of the monsters were easy to carry. Maximillion could collect all the crystals and limbs in his pack and still hike back to camp. Magic residue glowed faintly around the crystals of the one that had smashed Lydia and James down, glowed with a pearlescent sheen commonly found in bludgeoning weapons enchanted with stunning and crushing runes .

The beasts tough hide could be fashioned into armor, and the stumpy columns on its back made of bone and hardened hair stiffly melded together seemed good enough to carve into arrow tips, blade handles, or be hammered into shields.

James expression softened when he saw Lydia's watery, slightly red eyes, and he looked away so that she couldn't see his anxiety. If she is determined to stand up again on her own strength then he will not belittle her effort nor discourage her by showing pity.

Behaving as though nothing was wrong, he told Chenglei their charge was too badly injured to sit on the saddle, then called everyone, including Lydia for help in quickly climbing up the trees to cut some branches and using their spare clothes to make a make-shift stretcher. "We can't risk worsening the bone injuries and reopening the bleeding wounds of our friend if he rode bumpily on Frey." said James.

They all took turns in pairs carrying the man carefully across the slippery ice and red rugged forest; James summoned creatures: Frey the white ethereal stag, the disobedient lightning salamander whose name was Sparks, and another creature he summoned, a giant owl bear named Pond, followed the group as their guard and bag carriers.

As they were walking on the shores, he gave a sigh of relief when Lydia came up beside him and held his hand tight and reassuringly. He smiled and squeezed back happily then listened to her.

"I will always protect you, Lydia, whenever I feel scared of losing you. You are very dear to me." said James. He looked her gently but firmly in the eye. " If you are able to stand still and not shield me from death when it's coming, then I'll start probably, maybe, thinking about not shielding you too. Maybe."

He rubbed her hand with a thumb. "We need you to fight again, Lydia." he said more seriously. "Our numbers are so little. Even if it means you might fail, the effort counts because it helps. Suck it up and try again."

Johnny translated as best as he could in his halting elvish, miming a lot. "It said some call it Mildpine, because among the trees, it had the softest hums that could easily be mistaken as the wind."

Mildpine was very curious about the two, it was the first time it saw creatures like them who knew the language of the nymphs and dryads, yet were not nymphs nor dryads, and wore funny clothes. It eyed Echo's hammer and said that he has not seen weapons like those since the giants stormed out of the rifts from Jotunheim, and made war with the dragons who drove them back.

Chenglei wisely did not go near James or Lydia when they were having their little talk, carrying the injured soldier on the makeshift stretcher with Serena at the moment. He listened to their surroundings in case if anything is coming their way to once again attack. As much as he wanted to believe that they can handle another battle, the blond soldier really doubted. Not because he believe in his company, but because he doesn't know what the enemy could be.

It's bad enough a Deathknight is here and possibly following them, plus creatures they have never seen before? Too many ways on losing people.

Serena followed along, her eyes wandering over at quiet engineer before looking at Ymir and stayed quiet, not knowing what to say or do without playing her violin. Her fingers twitched again in her urge to play but she ignored it.

***

Echo blinked from what the tree, Mildpine, said before looking at her hammer. She didn't know that hammers were used for giants too. Then again her hammer can grow so maybe it used to be a giant's long before?

"Oh...My name is Echo and I'm a reindeer satyr. This is Johnny and he's a wolf. The reason why he can understand Elvish is because he's really good at studying cultures." The fawn told Mildpine, introducing them. "Are there any dragons around here anymore?" She asked curiously.

"Hooom, al dwin ar thoon nathagadia." said Mildpine. "Ai dragos ute sinome. Mata lingue fara."

"He said of course, there are many. Though one would usually find them deeper inland where larger prey is more bountiful." said Johnny. "He said only little dragons that eat fish and hunt, erm, fara can be found here."

Mildpine was curious as to where they came from, and when they told him they were from the other side of the Storm Wall he was surprised and said that the last time someone came from the other side was about a year ago, though he didn't come through the Storm Wall. Some ancient artifact accidentally brought him here. He was a man and the sea king found him and brought him to the long dragons who spoke his language. After that, the last Mildpine heard of him from the sea king was that one of the long dragons flew him back home at the start of spring. And that the name of the man, was Suoh Hisaya.

"Hmm..."

Oh if Serena was here, she would probably be cackling right now. Echo can already imagine it, her friend's loud and very infectious laughter echoing in her head. The fawn is shocked by the information the tree gave them, looking at Johnny with wide eyes before looking back at the tree.

"I-I see...Is there a way to see the dragons here? Do you know where we can find the Aged Author and the Manna tree?" Echo asked curiously, keeping her thoughts to herself. She's already coming up with ideas, some more scary than the others...

Zer0 Zer0

Her heart thumped quickly in her chest at James words and a bittersweet smile crossed her lips. He was right. Despite all of her faith in him being a better magic user and better able to take care of himself than her, she would still run to his aid if she saw him in dire straights. She would risk her life for him. She hugged closely against his arm and rested her head against his shoulder for a moment and nodded slightly as she agreed with him.

It was his last words that struck a nerve with her and she leaned away from his shoulder, looking up at him with a furrowed brow as her hand slipped away from his arm and her hand's grip on his loosened slightly, "suck it up?" James had likely also seen the look she had on her face now before, though it was similar, it wasn't as strong as it had been in the past. Lydia was angry. The phrase had evidently struck a nerve with her and her mind reeled from recounting the times that she had trod on despite the odds and despite her lack of skill. Those times had been different. Those times she didn't have to worry about someone risking their life for her or because of her.

She huffed in frustration and her hand slipped from his, "suck it up, James?" she shook her head and moved away from him then, she didn't even know how to respond to that because it made her so upset and so she moved over to where Serena was walking and helping Chenglei carry the wounded soldier on the makeshift stretcher.

"Here Serena, let me help for a while... you look like you need a break," she said in a gruff manner, though she had an awkward smile on her face like she was trying to be cheerful despite how she evidently really felt.

Mildpine was shocked that they wanted to meet dragons who were likely to eat them instead of talk to them. But Johnny insisted, and the old tree told them to travel north where the floating islands are, to the shrine of the sea king and offer a gift to call him there. For he was one of the only few nymphs who did not fear dragons and talked to them.

Unfortunately the old tree did not know who the aged author was and asked what was his name, but Johnny and Echo did not know either. "Perhaps this sea king fellow knows." said Johnny to Echo. He too was still reeling from the fact that Hisaya had been here and he said nothing about it.

As for the mention of the manna tree, Mildpine became cautious of them as though he was protective of the tree and would not say anything about it. Johnny told him about the nidhogg named Valdanr who was waging war and taking the essences of manna trees on the other side, and that their manna tree was threatened too."

"Valdanr!" boomed the tree, and the leaves of the forest shook angrily. Valdanr it seemed had been the most loyal servant of an evil dragon, The Nameless One, who had been sealed ten thousand years ago for eating the roots of Yggdrassil and almost caused the destruction of the world. Valdanr had been defeated, and was sealed deep in the earth after his master fell from the sky. It cannot be that he was outside, because he was still sealed down below. The guardians would know if he was free, though nothing has been heard of them for ten thousand years.

Serena blinked when Lydia came by and frowned a bit before passing the make-shift stretcher to the smaller witch. "If you want to..." The blonde hesitated before stretching her arms up, staying besides her friend and she can feel the relief back in her arms.

"Lydia...you make me want to play right now..." Serena mentioned causally though the inspiration is there. Everyone in the group knows how Serena tends to make songs when she picked something up from someone or something.

***

Echo listened in carefully and flinched back when Mildpine screamed the dragon's name. Even she understood that he didn't like this dragon.

"Please, we need help to stop Valdanr from eating the other manna tree we have left. There's someone I know who can speak to Manna trees." Echo shared, her ears folded back as she pleaded. "Her name is Renee, she listened to the only Manna tree we have left over the Storm Wall. We're here because Luthien told her how to get here and informed us."

" Camp, Red Forest "

"Er." James froze. He looked as confused as that time he thought Lydia was angry because he said her butt is cute, and stammered as she walked past him. "Wh-what I meant was --- urgh." he rubbed the back of his neck.

She could hear him huffing regretfully behind them for a while, but then didn't say more until they were a couple of hundred yards away from the camp, which was currently hidden from view behind the red trees. As they walked, Lydia could tell something was up if ever she glanced at Chenglei or James. The two young men seemed unnaturally wary instead of relieved and happy like the others that soon they will be in the safety of the camp, and what's more they seemed to be hiding their wariness.

Chenglei and Lydia noticed that the usual watchman wasn't on his post in a hidden part of the grove; the forest was eerily silent too, as though the birds were gone; then they both saw it, reflecting off the armor of the injured scout something black flittering behind them far away . . . watching.

Chenglei stayed quiet during the whole trip to 'camp', his smile looked fake to anyone who really knew him. His ash purple eyes always looking around the surrounding area without moving his head unless he needed to like when Serena talks with him or if Ymir was telling a tale.

He didn't say anything when Lydia switched spots with Serena as his concern as more with the ambush and keeping up with appearances. Once they entered the camp, it was too quiet and with a subtle look to where the guard should be in; he noticed no one was there in guard.

Good. It seems the prince was ready.

As he looked towards his injured comrade, his eyes steeled over as he saw the suspicious reflection...

That black figure is their target...and their stalker.

Chenglei turned his head around and continued to walk, waiting for the right moment to either attack or run if he needs to. Then he cleared his throat and casually talked with Serena who was wondering why it's so quiet.

"I have no clue."

Lydia accepted the stretcher and shook her head with a sigh and a nod, giving the same half-hearted smile to Chenglei. She laughed slightly when Serena said she made her want to play, "I think I'd really like that right now... but I don't know if it's a good idea," she stayed silent the rest of the time, shaking her head every now and then, her brow creasing and smoothing out every now and then as she thought.

After she had calmed down and looked back to James and noticed how he was acting, she didn't really think much of it because she figured that he might still be regretful about what he said after his stammering and rueful huffing when she had moved to help with the stretcher, but looking at Chenglei and seeing him acting the same way, her brow furrowed slightly. The fact that the watchman wasn't there also concerned her and then she wondered if Chenglei and James knew something that the rest of them didn't.

She glanced towards the soldier and noticed the black fluttering, but didn't look back over her shoulder, her green eyes widening slightly before her expression became grim and she spoke in a quiet tone, "Chenglei....." she would have nodded her head back towards the thing following them, but seeing the expression on his face, she realized she didn't need to.

Max set to work, harvesting the crystals, his work tempered body made the task much easier as he went about it. His pack bulging with the weight of the creature's limbs and crystals he struggled back towards camp, over the rocks on the ground and back through the trees, he didn't wait for the others, his excitement about the possibilities with these crystal parts and creature limbs was too much to wait, he already began to formulate in his mind an idea for a make shift forge when he got back, is he got a few soldiers to help the construction would go quickly for sure.

After a while, the creature's limbs and bits began to be quite the burden, so Max planted them beside a tree, and though his enthusiasm was still rampaging, he took a seat by them to rest, labored breaths coming out in short gasps, he made it farther than most anyone else without becoming winded, but anyone would eventually have had to take a breather on the trek back. Max felt a pang of guilt about leaving the wounded and the group, but there was nothing he could have done anyways, better to get back and arm everyone sooner, then stand around pretending that he was actually needed there.
