atlas park

When Atlas had arrived at the game, the bleachers were still overcrowding. He definitely wasn't early but he never thought this many people would show up. Maybe Junwoo was right after all, this would be the best place to sell their shit.
Atlas was crowned to be the big seller and this was somehow something he carried with pride. At home he never got that kind of attention but here at school, he was really someone now.

Even though Joshua was at the game, he wasn't intending to leave with his brother. The two seemed to drift apart further with each day and Atlas didn't really mind. They were different, they barely even interacted in the hallways and he wondered if Josh even knew about this whole selling drugs thing but word travelled fast, so it probably wouldn't take too long for him to find out.

Atlas pushed his way through the crowd and earned himself some annoyed looks, he had to keep his eyes open for potential buyers but him testing the samples right before this game definitely wasn't the smartest move. His eyes and mind kept drifting off until he saw her. Olivia Price. She wasn't a cheerleader but standing next to Alexa, she definitely could've been. She was an eye-catcher and finally, he could say she was into him as well. Something he'd been dreaming about since the beginning of this school year and it wasn't until the two of them started working together that it had happened. Sure, she asked about the raise and they had a little fight, but what relationship is ever perfect? The only thing Atlas was still worried about was that guy she was talking too and even almost cancelled him for, he just didn't understand how she'd could pick anyone over him at this point. They had the night of their lives, objectively speaking, of course.

Atlas refused to work further on his initial mission and changed course to the two ladies talking besides the bleachers. Work would come later, Junwoo would understand.
His hand initiated the greeting, grabbing Olivia's shoulder lightly with a slight smirk. He also gave Alex a nod as he arrived, she sure wasn't too bad either and he had to try not to stare at her for too long so he just started talking. 'You weren't saying anything bad about me, were you?' He jokingly added with a forceful smile as he looked at Olivia a little longer than he probably was supposed to. Atlas was always very loud and he surely didn't seem very insecure but all he could think about was how she would bad talk him to all of her friends. So what if he didn't last all night? He's not Jason fucking Bourne.

'Actually, I'm really happy I ran into you because I wanted to ask if you were free tonight. There's always a big party after the game and,' he looked at Alex with a playful smile. 'Your friend's obviously invited too.' Too much?
Atlas pulled out a pack of cigarettes that crumpled up in his pockets and held it up as a sign, an offer for them to take one. 'I can even borrow my dad's car, it's no problem.' Okay, he was blowing it. Atlas could hit anyone who'd breath too loud at this point. His dad's car? That's not fucking cool. That's lame. Ánd desperate.
'Or we could try out the samples Junwoo gave us.' Now was his last chance, he looked at Alex, hoping to make Olivia just at least a tiny bit jealous. 'If you need anything to party, I can hook you up, no problem. I also give a huge discount if you're like really hot.'
Atlas now had a big smirk on his face but really, he was just scared of awaiting a cold drink being thrown in his face.

er response was brief, harsh even, it was clear that Kathrine was going through something but he wasn't going to push the issue. Instead he just told her where he'd be and he sauntered off to his next class.

The rest of the day ticked by slowly, almost taunting him. He wanted to get out and get to the game. He had to meet Sam and while football wasn't his favourite sport, it still beat sitting in the house. Eventually the final bell of the day rung out and he found himself alone in the music room.

It was his sanctuary, his home and the place he loved to be more than pretty much anywhere else. Everything in there was a key to escape the reality of his existence and to lose himself in the magic of music. He walked past the guitars and drums before sitting himself on the bench of the piano. He took a moment's breath before beginning to play.

His fingers graced each key with a softness that contradicted his appearance. Each note flowed into the next in melodic song, filling the air with a tune that was close to his own heart. Every keystroke was a reminder of his mother, the flame that had burnt out far too soon. An empty hole remained where she had once been and music was how he filled it.

If people knew what the melody came from they would judge and laugh, but it meant the world to him. It was what he was watching the moment he learned of his mother's illness, her fainting and hitting the deck like a falling stack of bricks. For many a song associated with such an event would be enough to never want to hear it again. For Rob, it was entirely cathartic. Playing it helped him come to terms with her death and now even acted as a reminder of the good times.

As the song reached its peak, a crash brought him back down to reality. His head turned to see his science partner frantically scrambling to pick up a pile of tambourines up from the floor. A smile began to curl up at the corner of his mouth as Kat began to scurry over towards him, her embarrassment etched on her face. She gave him genuine praise for his playing but he still smiled from her minor accident.

“Well…I'm sure there's a lot about me that would surprise you…”
he said jokingly, shuffling over on the bench he was sat on and gently patting the space next to him.
"Come sit with me for a while…”

He waited for her to take a seat next to him and began to play a different song, something that would likely be far more familiar to Kat. His fingers teased the keys with each touch during the soft introduction, a gentle melody to prepare the ears for what was to come. As his keystrokes became more intent and powerful a new sound followed…his voice.

He began to sing, his voice completely in tune with the notes his fingers played. It was a far cry from the random guttural roars he would mockingly let out from time to time in imitation of his favourite bands. His voice began to grow in power as the chorus arrived and with it his heart began to open. Memories of his mother flooded his mind as he lost himself in the music once more. His eyes began to water as they often would but he managed to hold the tears back from running down his cheeks.

He saw the song to it's completion and took a moment to compose himself after his finger left the last note. He took a deep breath before exhaling and turning to smile at Kat.

“I'm sorry…I got kinda lost there…”
he said letting out an awkward laugh.
“Music is just the one thing that lets me deal with my feelings…it helps to clear my mind and…yeah…helps me remember my mother you know?”

Leo took another sip of his beer, letting the cool liquid slide down his throat as he leaned against the truck. He glanced over at Byron, his best friend’s mood seemed to lighten more as they joked and sipped on their drinks. Byron always tried to hide what was bothering him, but Leo could read him like an open book. Byron’s girl was clearly on his mind and even though he tried to shrug it off, Leo knew there was more beneath the surface.

“Man, you know I’ve always been in your head,” Leo said with a smirk, raising his bottle. “It's a gift... or a curse, depending on how you look at it.”

He chuckled at Byron’s attempt to brush off the situation, but Leo wasn’t buying it. “Look, if something’s off, it’s off. Don’t ignore it, but don’t drive yourself crazy about it either. You’ll figure it out.” Leo gave him a knowing look, the one that said, I get it, but I won’t push. Byron would come around when he was ready to talk.

Leo had his own struggles to juggle. As much as he liked to tease Byron, he wasn’t exactly winning in the relationship department either. Not that there was a relationship. Just the girl. Olivia. He’d been head over heels for her since... well, forever, but he hadn’t found the guts to tell her yet. Every time he got close, something stopped him, fear, doubt, timing, all of it. Instead, he stayed quiet and pretended to be just the friend, maybe flirted a little, dropping hints here and there. He took a long sip of his beer, feeling the weight of his own silence.

Leo chuckled at the small jab Byron made, though it hit a little closer to home than he probably realized.

“I don’t need a wingman,” Leo grinned, playing along. “I’ve got plenty of girls in my life, bro. The problem is they all want the 'fling' package, not the ‘boyfriend’ upgrade. Besides there's only one girl for me.” He shrugged, keeping it light, but deep down he felt the familiar pang in his chest. Olivia. She was always the first one to come to mind and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t shake it.

Before he could make another joke, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out and saw Olivia’s name flash across the screen. A small smile crept onto his face without him even realizing. Byron said something, but Leo’s mind was already somewhere else, reading the text. Leo’s heart did a little flip and suddenly, the whole world faded into the background. He started typing back, his fingers moving faster than his brain could keep up.

Leo soon realized he was still standing in the parking lot, next to Byron, who was probably watching him with that all-too-knowing look. He glanced up, his smile still lingering, though he tried to suppress it.

“Uh, sorry,” Leo muttered, pocketing his phone. “It was Livy, we're going to swing by her when we go in.” He felt his face heat up a little, hoping Byron didn’t notice just how excited he was. Knowing Byron, he definitely did.

For a moment, Leo got lost in the thought of seeing Olivia again. She had this way of making everything else disappear. Even here, surrounded by the noise of the game and the crowd, he could almost forget where he was, forget about the tension in the air, forget about everything... except her. He took another sip of his beer, staring off into the distance, his thoughts completely tangled up in Olivia. She always had that effect on him, even when she wasn’t physically there. Her smile, her laugh, the way she could just be... it drove him crazy, but he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Leo blinked, snapping back into reality. He tried to focus, but his mind kept drifting back to Olivia.

“Also, your sister texted me earlier. She wanted to know where you were,” Leo said, almost trying to distract his thoughts. “Ok yeah, now let’s get in there.” He tossed his empty beer bottle back into the esky and pulled himself off the truck. He was ready to get inside, but a part of him was already looking forward to the moment he saw Olivia. Maybe tonight... maybe tonight he’d finally say something.

Liana leaned against the wall, arms crossed, waiting for Addison to finish changing. She glanced at her phone again, the time ticking away faster than she liked. Where is Katherine? They had a plan to get to the football game early so they could scout out a good spot, but Katherine was running late. Liana hated being late to anything, especially events like this where the crowd would be insane.

Her thoughts drifted to the game. It wasn’t like she cared about football, but tonight felt important. Maybe it was because everyone from school would be there and she wanted to make an impression, or maybe it was something else, something she couldn't quite place. Either way, she felt an urgency to get there early, scope out the scene, and avoid being stuck in a sea of people with nowhere to sit.

Finally, the door to her bathroom creaked open and Addison stepped out, looking a little unsure but glowing with excitement. Liana’s eyes scanned the outfit quickly, her critical fashion sense kicking in. The cropped hoodie fit Addison perfectly and the jeans hugged her in all the right places. The necklace Liana had handed over just minutes ago glittered softly against Addison’s skin, tying the whole look together.

Liana smirked, pushing off the wall and walking over. “I think you’re about to cause a scene,” she teased, adjusting the necklace around Addison’s neck slightly. “You look amazing. You’re going to make everyone at that game wish they dressed as well as you do.”

“Trust me, it’s perfect,” Liana assured her with a wink, taking a step back to admire her work. “Now, if only Katherine would hurry up, we could actually show up looking like queens instead of rolling in late.” Liana grabbed her phone again, texting Katherine for what felt like the hundredth time.

Liana: Where are you?! We’re gonna be late!

She sighed, tossing her phone onto her bed. “I swear, if she takes any longer, we’re going without her. If Katherine makes us late for this, I’m disowning her" she slightly joked.

She glanced at Addison, who was still admiring the outfit in the mirror, and shook her head with a teasing smile. "Look at you, though. You look amazing! I knew that outfit would be perfect for you."

Liana paced a little, glancing out the window, then back at Addison. "I’m just excited to get there early, you know? Plus, I know how much you’ve wanted to be a part of these things, and this... it’s kind of the perfect way to meet more people, don't you think?" Checking her phone again, she laughed lightly. Liana sat on the edge of the bed, looking thoughtful for a moment.

Her face brightened as she stood up again. “Okay, whenever Katherine gets here, we’ll head out, but for now, you should take a few selfies in that outfit! You seriously look so cute!”

Addison Lee

the optimist

Addison's smile grew 10 fold when she saw her friend smile, she knew Liana would always be honest with her, since that was the way she was. She tended to tell her the truth rather than what she wanted to hear, so when she told her she looked good she knew she could really trust and believe her opinion. “You sure…it's not too much?” she asked as her eyes found her friends.

Instead of being told it was showing too much skin like her mother would, Liana only confirmed to her that she looked great. She had a small burst of confidence coursing through her as she walked over to the mirror. She glanced at herself one more time, she couldn't believe she was doing this but in her own way she felt like she needed this…needed to finally break free from her family's relentless hold on her life. And today would be that day.

If only Katherine was here to see it. See Addision break through the ridiculous barrier of her parents.

Her eyes drifted off as she turned around noticing Liana she looked a bit on edge like Katherine not being here was becoming nerve racking. “Hey it's alright if we're a bit late” she said as she listened to Liana, and she nodded this was a way for her to meet more people…and to overcome the social anxiety she struggled with. However, she knew Katherine they both did. She wouldn't be late and if she was it would only be because of something really important that needed her immediate attention. She walked over to Katherine sitting down on the bed next to her.

“Hey relax shell show and if not it's okay she just had something important to do” she shrugged before she pulled out her phone. She did exactly what Liana had in mind except instead of doing selfies by herself she invited Liana and they filled her camera roll with silly pictures. For a while they got lost in the moment the laughter, the pictures, the smiles.

Until Addison's eyes landed on the clock, they'd be late if they didn't go now. So she looked back at Liana, seeing her on edge made her worry so she simply took her best friend's hand and pulled her up out the bed. “Come on, well go early Kat can catch up or maybe we'll just meet her there…there's no point sitting here worrying and wondering when she'll show…let's go have some fun” she said dragging her best friend to the door playfully as she put her shoes on and got them right out the door.

She was quiet, but that felt... fairly normal. And it was something that Connor kind of liked -- if the person he was with was quiet, then he could be, too.

... Well, liked to a certain point, and then it got awkward.

"Last year you gotta come to football games," he remarked, as he glanced in her direction again. He shifted the strap of his bag on his shoulder. "Bet you're... happy 'bout that, right?"

Not because he was leaving, of course -- but because she wouldn't have to suffer through these games anymore. Connor might've enjoyed them, but he knew that the football games were not most people's ideal night out.

He knew the whole game thing should've been bittersweet, but Connor really couldn't wait to pack up his bags and head off to college with Alexandra. Sure, his parents were expecting him to come back one day and take over the pharmacy, and he would... probably do that, but... well, it'd depend in a few years, when the two of them were graduated.

All Connor knew for sure was that he was going wherever Alexa was -- because yeah, whatever, they were a stupid high school couple, but they were going to be a super high school couple that made it. Connor was pretty content, and he liked to-- no, he knew that Alexandra was happy with him, too.

He... hadn't... asked...

The two braincells that Drake possessed were grinding together, and he kind of tilted his head to the side, hands coming to rest on his hips. "Huh," he remarked. Sure, he thought he'd asked, but it was a real him thing to do to completely forget to do that, ya know? Or to just not do it in the first part.

He always figured that he'd find people he liked again, ya know?

Drake scoffed at her suggestion, though, that he got them points.

"Please, he said, "see, if it was just me, we'd be killin' it with points, ya know? But the other guys..." he trailed off, kinda sucking in a breath through his teeth with a shrug of his shoulders. "I dunno, man-- sometimes they're not real good, ya know?"

He was teasing, of course. Drake thought the whole team was fantastic. Don't beat him up.

"How 'bout instead," he held out his hand, tapping a finger against the palm of said hand. "Ya just write your number right there, huh? And then we call it good, ya know?"

(No, it did not occur to him that by the end of the game, his palm would be so sweaty that the name would be completely erased.)

She would worry about it, but only briefly before Dahlia would become wrapped up with something in her own life. She'd never really been the type of person to pry and pressure others to explain themselves -- likely because she wasn't the type of person that shared her own issues, so why push others to do so?

"Thank you," she mumbled in response to his compliment.

Sure, she'd hear her fair share of compliments, but they still tended to... catch her off guard. She guessed.

"Willow and Reed?" she echoed, glancing back in his direction. "Umm... I dunno, a couple weeks ago, maybe?" Sure, they'd probably texted her more than that, but Dahlia wasn't always the... best about texting people better, least of all her siblings, who'd basically up and abandoned her.

Somewhere in Dahlia's mind, she knew it was wrong of her to be upset at her siblings for moving on. After all, if she was the eldest, wouldn't she have done the exact same? Packed her bags and left as soon as she could, instead of waiting around until her younger siblings could come along with?

Dahlia... didn't really know what the actual answer to that theoretical situation would be.

Still, it hurt -- to feel like everyone you cared about and looked up to was abandoning you. First Reed, then Willow, and soon this year, Alexa would follow suit.

It was so hard to be happy for all of them, too, when she constantly felt left behind.

"Have you?" Lia asked. "Like... talked to them recently?"

She asked, even though she knew what the answer was.

Alexandra knew perfectly well that talking to Olivia meant it was about boy problems. And no, she wasn’t going to judge her because Alexandra had done things she wasn’t proud of either. Stealing someone’s boyfriend wasn’t exactly in the girl code, but that led to the best relationship she’d ever had—one she was hoping to continue in college. Even if she wasn’t a hopeless romantic, Alexandra was sure she and Connor were in it for the long run, something she never imagined feeling, especially since she was convinced high school relationships wouldn’t last after graduation.

But with Olivia, it was a completely different story. Olivia wasn’t the relationship type, and if Alexandra was honest, sometimes she struggled to remember who was even on Olivia’s ever-rotating list of flings. Despite the initial conversation, Alexandra’s eyebrow raised at the mention of Olivia’s side job. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that Olivia was selling drugs to other high schoolers. If secrecy was something those three wanted in their business, well, they were terrible at it. Still, Alexandra wouldn’t meddle; it wasn’t her concern. If Olivia wanted easy money, so be it. Alexandra wasn’t about to act like a mother, telling her what was right or wrong.

“So basically, you’re letting two idiots belittle you and put a price on yourself just for a bit of extra cash in a shady business, and you’re calling it another fling? For them, you’re just the girl who’d do anything for easy money. It’s your life, and I won’t meddle, but if you want my advice, maybe start checking your priorities. Because, from where I’m standing, you’re not exactly thriving in life—especially with those two.”

It was almost as if Alexandra’s words had summoned one of those two idiots into their conversation. Atlas, with his casual and unapologetic demeanor, strolled over and joined them and heard him as he started rambling about his father's car, a party and offering a cigarette.

“I don’t smoke unless it’s at a party,”
Alexandra said, although she was more of an occasional smoker—or in this case, her choice was vaping. It wasn’t something she did often enough to consider it a bad habit, and she certainly didn’t have a problem with it. She didn’t even own one; it was more of a "borrow from a friend" situation rather than spending her money on it. If she thought about it, months had passed since she’d last vaped.

“Not interested,”
she said, turning down Atlas’s offer.
“I have better things to do than get high as a kite. But if that’s your thing, be my guest—I’m not going to judge. I’m sure there’s some other girl who’d be interested in your discounts. But I’m not attracted to guys who think they’re big-time entrepreneurs just because they sell a couple of drugs to high schoolers.”

She shot him an annoyed glance.
“So my advice? Try another technique to flirt with me. Not that it would work anyway—I have a boyfriend. But we can still have a decent conversation, don’t you think?”

Alexandra, Leo, and atlas

She looked at Alexandra and kinda glanced away, it seemed everyone and the world was telling her what she was doing was stupid going around with people. And in some cases she knew it…but in other cases she thought for now it would be better than ever getting attached. “I know…I know-”

When she came to this game the last thought that had crossed her mind was running into Atlas again after the night they'd spent. But because she opened her big mouth and said something about him he had to appear out of the blue, honestly in some cases he reminded her of those urban stories of never looking into a mirror and repeating a name 3 times or else they’d appear. But instead of a ghost she was dealing with someone much worse, Atlas and instead of a mirror he appeared anywhere and everywhere.

Silently as he spoke she thought back to what she said and mentally counted how many times she'd said his name.

1… - well she mentioned him many times - maybe it only took once for the devil to show up.

At least this day couldnt get any worse either she thought to herself when she felt Atlas hand against her shoulder, the temptation to throw his hand off her was strong but she left it there. For the moment being of course, if he were to tick her off in even the smallest way possible he'd be getting a lot more than a hand thrown off her.

“No your name didn't even get brought into the conversation, actually” she said as she didn't meet his eyes instead her face seemed to be the same resting bitch face she had as she looked at Alexandra with the -yeah right- look. He seemed to catch her attention when he mentioned a party, parties to Olivia meant more time away from home away from her father away from her mother and the place she'd never considered a real home. However, her excitement dies down immediately when he'd looked at Alexandra a little too long for her liking after all her best friend was taken, and then he pulled out cigarettes casually at a highschool football game…oh god he really was an idiot.

She made it look playful as she jabbed her elbow into his side, but it was far from playful if anything it probably caused a few organs to shift around. “He would give you an offer no matter what because you're my best friend and your. Taken. Secondly don't be selling shit here in front of the whole world…if you want to go to prison might as well start turning yourself in” she said, Olivia wasn't jealous, rather she was pissed her best friend was being hit on right after they'd spent a night together and that he acted like she was the only one for him only for him to do this shit….no wonder she needed to get paid to spend a night with him…

Just as her eyes glanced over to meet his eyes and tell him she'd come to the party, her mouth stopped short when her eyes had found Leos.

Oh this day could get worse-what an idiot she was for even letting such a thought cross her mind.

Olivia had invited/wanted Leo over when she'd been standing alone, and when Atlas made his way over she thought it'd be a matter of seconds until he disappeared, but he seemed to latch on like…..what was it Drake said- mold yeah like mold expect he'd disappear with bleach.

She’d felt a sort of guilt or pain hit her when she saw Leo seeing her with Atlas next to her. She didn't know why, after all she'd slept and been with a lot of people while talking with Leo since they were only friends. That's all they ever would be anyways….yet there was that underlying pain she didn't know how to get rid of. A pain that made her want to pull away from Atlas and run into him, explain that it was nothing and meant nothing- but of course that was stupid- she didnt care she never cared……right?

Her eyes didn't seem to meet his, but she didn't let her expression falter either….suddenly Everest words seemed to creep up in her mind when she asked what it was like to be in love. Head turns? Check, Ear Blushing? Her face was red, lingering eyes…yeah when he came in - shit no Everest didn't know what the hell he was talking about its nothing!

Fine Again

Byron hadn't answered Leo, just brushed past it, but he did appreciate his words. 6 years of friendship and it was still hard to grasp that there was someone out there crazy enough to trust and respect him. He sure didn't. Leo kept his advice short and sweet and then allowed Byron to drop the issue, participating in his playful banter. As Byron watched him, he realized what he'd said. 'Besides, there's only one girl for me' Olivia Byron thought. Byron held his tongue on this issue, but the truth was, Byron had seen that woman with, well, almost everyone. So had Leo, of course. She didn't hide it, in fact she owned it. But watching his friend constantly have his hope crushed, only to pick himself back up and let them be crushed again was, well painful. Byron knew that this was an issue he had to work out for himself, but each time he hoped he would just get over her or just be direct with her, "Yeah, man. I know that." He said "But the actual girl doesn't..." He said it tentatively, but it turned out there was no need. Leo was staring at his phone like a lovestruck fool and hadn’t heard a thing. Speak of the devil. He thought to himself.

Leo confirmed his suspicions of who had texted him. Now it was Leo's turn to get that knowing look. I want to just tell that girl myself, for gods sake. Look at this guy. Byron knew, despite his thoughts, that would not be his place. "Yeah, no worries man. I'll say hi then I'll go look for Lia." He said. Leo then, distractedly told Byron about Mei's text. Byron rolled his eyes, distracted for the moment.

He texted Connor "Yes, I came to your game. Staying home with Daddy was a close second, but didn't quite win over" He was pretty sure Connor would ignore the sarcastic text, but he was frankly sick of everyone in his family treating him like an unexploded bomb. The annoyance faded pretty quickly as he looked back at his swooning lovedrunk best friend. Before they headed inside... he would just say one small thing to... coax this pining his friend was doing into, hopefully, action. "Leo" He said stopping his friend "You've got this man. And whatever the outcome is, I'll be here with more beer." With a friendly soft punch to the shoulder, Byron casually headed inside, leaving it at that. He'd come say hi to Olivia, but ultimately he wanted to go and find Lia. Quickly he pulled out his phone as he walked, hoping for a text or something from her, but nothing. Byron put his phone away crankily figuring she was probably either off with the other cheerleaders or hanging out with her best friend.

They slowly came into view of a small group of student. His eyes fell on Olivia, who was currently in very close proximity to, assumably, her latest hedonistic endeavor. Because he was looking at her, he did notice the change in her expression as her eyes bypassed him and landed on his friend Leo. Clearly some mutual feelings there. Maybe he could get rid of the annoying hanger on or at least that fake smirk plastered across his face. Byron know insecurity when he saw it, he lived it every day, but was much better at hiding it.

“Atlas, my man, risky play there dude. You might wanna shove it back in your pants." He let the double entendre sit there for a moment before gesturing with his eyes down to the packet of cigarettes in the boys grip and then over his shoulder where a group of adults, probably teachers, congregated right near the group of teens. Didn't look like anyone had seen anything, luckily for him. They hadn't got any looks.

His gaze then shifted to Olivia and Alexandra "Hey liv, Alexa..." He said coolly, expression neutral. "Either of you seen Lia, by any chance?" Alexa, Connor's girl. He didn't bare her any ill will, maybe her taste in men could be better but she was also his girl's best friend. Not someone you particularly wanted on your bad side, that is if you wanted to keep said girl.

She was trying to truely believe this, but she genuinely felt the weight of Looking after Byron would fully shift to her, especially if Leo left too and she had no clue what his plans were. Connor didn’t need to be burdened with these troubles right before his game though, so Mei just popped a sour candy in her mouth and moved on. “Well, we still have some time, are you meeting up with Alexa, I’ll come say hi.” She said as they approached the entrance to the stadium. Alexandra was a nice girl, at least she was always nice to Mei. She thought of Mei when she was out, buying her bits and pieces. Li had something she’d made herself that she wanted to give her, but was extremely nervous about it, and had missed several opportunities so far.

Casting the thought aside to be dealt with as it came, Mei checked her phone, nothing from Byron or Leo. Instead she opened up a new message window. She wanted to make sure she met up with Tavon. Conversation with him was somewhat easier now that they knew one another.

“Tavon, did you make it to the game?” She Texted Tavon Greene. She’d met him a fair few months ago now when he’d come to her aid. She was being harassed by some strangers downtown and he’d intervened. He was definitely the closest thing to a friend she currently had, other than a few guys/girls in some of her classes or extracurriculars she’d spoken to or had the occasional group assignment with.

Tavon shook his head smoothly in displeasure at her response. She hasn’t talked to her siblings in a couple weeks? He knew that was the statement she’d make, because both of them had asked Tavon how she’s doing. His responses were
‘I don’t know, I’m not her popular boy toy, or her fantastical best friend so I don’t talk to her much.’
It wasn’t jealousy, with his retorts. Was more his way of saying
‘she doesn't talk to me, so stop asking.’
He’s just the guy that’ll fuck someone up if it’s unavoidable. A marginal level of under appreciation, everyone else was leaving her, but he was still there… for now.

As Lia had inquired if he had talked with them, Tavon had pulled out his phone. His phone had buzzed from within his pocket. It was May, one of the few friends Tavon did have. Sweet girl, Tavon would just about fuck anyone up if they hurt May. He had only known her for a couple months but there were certain individuals that didn’t deserve anything harsh, or severe. They were just pure, and uncorrupt, to an extent. Tavon honestly believed May was one such individual.

He hadn’t even countered Lia’s inquiry, as he began texting May 'Unfortunately, I’m here… I’m at the far end of the bleachers.' He didn’t know if she was inquiring because she wanted to meet up. Or if she was just wondering if Tavon made it.

After responding to May, his hazel spheres looked over at Lia. Answering in a way that he knew, that she already knew the answer.
“Yea, but you knew that. They keep asking me how you’re doing. Obviously I tell them that I don’t fucking know. Given that I obviously… don’t.”
It wasn’t because he hadn’t wanted to know how she was doing. But if she was going to avoid him, he wasn’t going to go outta his way to annoy her. If she needed him, she knew how to reach him.

Pausing for a brief moment
“You should talk to them. Shit gets annoying, hearing them ask.”
Tavon understood why she didn’t talk with them though. Her thinking was probably different than his, he saw it more as an annoyance whereas she was perhaps holding some resentment or something. He maintained a subtle pause, leaning his soaring figure back, eyes gazing gently at the sky.
He could hear his headphones start that song, of course it started playing now.

“Talking to you is so different from back then. Before we’d just talk about whatever. Now I have no fucking clue what to even say to you.”
Tavon was brutally honest, lying just wasn’t his forte
“We could joke around, I could feel like my problems were melting away. I’d chuckle, feel different. But now though, now it’s kinda like, what the fuck do we even talk about?”

His hazel sphere’s still gazing up at the sky, not looking at Lia
“How Susan wants you to leave your boyfriend, but you can’t because you left your lip gloss in his car.”
He stated sarcastically, a deep amiable chuckle running across his lips. She just always seemed to converse about gossip. Another guy, or something senseless. He missed just the soft silence, her presence without a necessity to entertain. Lying atop his spot outside the outskirts of town with her, and soaking in their time together. His ‘demons’ just didn’t seem to go away around her, like they did before.

“It’s all good though, you keep doing you.”
He stated, either she was gonna continue changing into the person she was becoming. Or realize, and maybe eventually, snap back into reality. Tavon honestly felt like if she kept on her current path she’d be no different than her parents. Sitting there in a trailer wondering what went wrong.

She scoffed, rolling her eyes at the very thought that she should reach out to her siblings. The three of them had never been particularly close -- or at least, they'd never been particularly close with Dahlia. She'd... always kind of felt like the forgotten third Blake child, the one that was kind of tossed to the side because she wasn't sweet or thoughtful or whatever it was that others used to describe her older siblings.

Dahlia was the spoiled little problem child -- the one that her parents had doted on, until she'd passed the cute kid stage, and then she'd been tossed to the side like an old doll. And from there, she'd started acting out. Arguing, yelling, throwing fits, and acting before thinking, anything that would get her just a little more attention from her parents.

It was never positive, but she didn't think her parents knew how to give positive attention.

"Whatever, I'm not calling them," she scoffed. They'd had every opportunity to reach out or be there when they'd been in Haven Falls, so why would they pretend to be there for her now?

Dahlia's lips pressed tightly together, turning downwards into a small frown. Her arms now came to cross defiantly over her chest, and she straightened up her posture a touch.

His next words stung in a way that she didn't particularly like, and in a way that Lia didn't know how to handle. Her fingernails dug into her arms, as she exhaled slowly.

"What do you mean?" she asked, trying to keep her voice calm, but it was Dahlia, and nothing with her was calm. She tended to go on the offensive following the most passive of remarks. "We hung out, like, literally not even that long ago, and everything was fine then. I'm literally talking to you right now, and you're..." She huffed.

She promptly stood up from her seat, her arms dropping from her chest to rest by her sides. "I came over here because I wanted to see you before the stupid game, but..." She trailed off, her lips pressing together once more as she leaned back on her heels, her arms crossing across her chest.

It was fitting, she decided. Willow had left. Reed had left. Alexandra was leaving her at the end of this year. It felt fitting, really, that Tavon, the one person she hadn't worried about leaving, would end up following them.

What did she wanna say?

"I don't know what you want from me," Dahlia stated. "I'm not gonna change just because you don't like me."

That wasn't quite what she'd had in mind, but she wasn't always the best at thinking things through before they came pouring out.

Shaking her pompoms wasn’t the exact same as doing routines with her old drill team, but it was a way to move her body to some music and get in front of a crowd. So it checked some of the boxes for her. She’d spent the time between the school day and the game’s initial start getting ready with Alexa and Lia, both of which declined Claudia Jean’s offer to put some body glitter on their cheeks. Standing under the lights with her black and amber colored poms as she shook them above her head, blonde tresses hoisted up into a high pony and secured with a shimmery bow, she felt like a star. Nevermind that she was technically only one of several cheerleaders and she probably had less people admiring her team spirit and sharp, on-time, movements and more skeezy teen boys checking out her ass in her cheer skirt.

As the cheer came to an end and Claudia Jean finished shouting out the letters of “B-E A-G-G-R-E-S-S-I-V-E.” They were given the high sign from the coach that they were allowed to disperse from the sidelines for a while. The other girls seemed to wander off to talk to others, to boys mostly. Meanwhile Claudia Jean herself tossed her poms beneath the bench and headed for the bathroom so she could fix her bow and make sure her cheeks were still adequately glittered. On her way there she was interrupted by a raven-haired boy standing in front of her and introducing himself. Being that she wasn’t raised in a barn, she returned his greeting.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
Her smile gleamed like the shimmering makeup on her skin as she extended a hand to shake his
“I’m Claudia Jean Taylor. That’s Claudia Jean, two words, like green bean.”
She giggled. The little follow-up to the stating of her name was a newer addition to her usual introduction. Back in Georgia it had been more than common for kids to have double names. In her old homeroom class alone there was an Anna Beth, Anna Kate, Anna Leigh, and a Mary Anna. There had been quite a scene that first day when her mother had gone to enroll her into the North Dakota small town’s high school when the secretary handed her back a set of papers with ‘Claudia Taylor’ printed on the top. Practically the whole school had heard Mrs. Taylor hollering “If I wanted people to call her ‘Claudia’ then I would have named her that!” Hell hath no fury like a southern woman being misunderstood.

She nodded eagerly
“I think we might could go all the way this year.”
She said, still smiling as she posed with her hands clasped together in front of her body.

Ines chuckled, exposing the now blue hue of her tongue colored by the slushie.Drake had a little more charisma than the usual boys who tried to flirt with her, and practically infinitely more than her last ‘boyfriend’ although that term was generous. Oh, sweet, innocent, boring Ethan Lamb who took her to the spring fling freshman year and then asked “Are you sure it’s okay with your parents?” when she had tried to kiss him.

She shifted her weight between her feet, eyeing him over the lid of her drink. God he looked stupid in that football gear… Ines turned on her heel and swiped a pen from the countertop of the concession stand, one of the many scattered across the surface intended for signing recipes or something. They probably wouldn’t miss it.

“Why not?”
She shrugged as she yanked off the cap with her teeth
“Maybe I can be your good luck charm. You can think of me while you try and score for this hopeless team.”
Her words slightly muffled by the bit of plastic in her mouth as she scribbled her number onto his hand.

She shoved the cap back onto the pen and shoved the pen itself into the back pocket of her jeans.
“So, provided you aren’t run out of town in shame following a devastating loss, what are you doing after this?”
She asked, pausing to sip her drink again. Though truthfully she was less interested in his exact plans and more so hoping he would happen to know of anything interesting she could insert herself into so she wouldn’t have to head home and eat meatloaf with her parents and Kathrine. If they asked her one more time what her plan for college was, she was gonna set something on fire for sure. Probably starting with that ugly couch in the family room for sure.

Tavon wasn’t looking in her direction as she spoke, just gazing at the stars. Shaking his head gently with disapproval. Love could be hurtful as fuck. She can’t be ignorant to her changes, could she? So distressed about what others are thinking of her. She wasn’t herself. It’s like she was trying to live in someone else’s shoes. Someone she looked up to.

She said it herself, the game was stupid but yet there she was, adorning a cheerleader uniform putting on a farce. He didn’t even need to say it. She called the game stupid, but she’s the one in uniform… cheering for this stupid game.

“You said it yourself Lia, you called this game stupid but you’re the one wearing a cheerleader uniform. For a stupid game you’re definitely suited up like you’re all about it. Ready to cheer for it like it’s some great game.”
Tavon tilted upward, his hazel spheres looking at Lia
“If there has been one person that has consistently been there to catch you when you fall, it’s been me. No matter the situation. Someone that doesn’t like you doesn’t do shit like that.”

He shook his head, he never once said he didn’t like her, and she knew damn well what Tavon wanted from her. Yea, she wasn’t the same but she knew more than anyone else if Tavon didn’t like someone, he’d tell them to completely fuck off. Yea, there were times he had the temperament to make people think he hadn’t cared. But she, of all people, had to realize that he was there for her.

“I don’t need to explain to you what I want, deep down, you know.”

He’d concede when he was wrong. Yea, maybe he was a bit forward but he didn’t regret any of it. He knew the type of person Dahlia was too. Naturally Tavon being blunt, his hazel spheres gazing at her, he continued.

“But don’t sit there and get upset and say I’m abandoning you. Stupid ass victim shit, I will always be here, until you make it apparent to me that I’m wasting my time, and IF that time comes. Don’t say I abandoned you, cause it’d be the furthest thing from the truth.”
He didn’t wanna tell her that she was getting close to making it apparent. He figured he had already been harsh enough.

“But It’s all good, enjoy this stupid ass game, as you put it. I’ll still be here, not playing this high school gossip bullshit and looking after you when you need me.”

After saying that, his immediate thought was
‘queue her saying, I don’t need you to look after me.’
He wasn’t gonna go around looking for some other chick. Or get petty about stupid bullshit. He had his eyes set on her, but one individual can only take so much pushing before they move on.

“Just don’t tell yourself you haven’t changed. This whole popularity shit, the gossip bullshit, has gotten to your head. Like you’re trying to live someone else’s life and not your own.”

Tavon nonetheless said his peace for now, he wasn’t gonna continue, at least not today. He had already been in one argument with his old man. Maybe that’s why he was already on a short fuse. But now the woman he has feelings for? Where the fuck was May? He just needs to be at peace. Or really release some pent up aggression. Though he is grateful that May didn’t see that. Hardly anyone knows Tavon as someone that would spill his heart, and he would rather keep it that way. He’s not about this bullshit.

Everest Park

F

ocus. Speed. I am speed. One winner, forty-two losers. I eat losers for breakfast.

Breakfast? Maybe he should’ve had breakfast? Well, lunch did hit the spot. No, no, no. He had to focus on his Cars peptalk.

Speed. Faster than fast, quicker than quick. I am Lightning.

Everest did a full typhoon of a swing in front of his brother’s mirror, the black and orange varsity jacket fastidiously singed-tight on his jaunty, always shifting shoulders. Autumn was at a creamy beginning, but for eons had been in his eyes; bountiful of rustling browns and amber. Lending his fiery fingers through his leaf-rustle of black hair, he pauses.

But, the track doesn’t wait, and neither does he.

That’s right.

While the world outside was mystically shrinking and shrivelling, Everest was not. He smoulders a gentle slap against the domed upper half of the mirror, patting his ego and his reflection.

No distractions. Except—wait—did he check his tire pressure? Did his dad’s jaded jeep even hit 40 miles per hour? Could it even lug those miles there? Forget that, Everest was built for this. Oil in his veins, fire in his feet. The only thing on the menu today is victory, and he was starving.

No, really: he was starving.

But wait—what about coffee? A little caffeine never hurt anyone, right?

No, stop! This life wasn’t for a pit stop for snacks. It's about the race, the finish line, the roar of the crowd. Yeah, that’s right. Everest didn’t need fuel; he was the fuel.

But, all this dissipated as he lamely sat on the bleachers bored out of his mind.

Who knew watching his best friends on the field was so, so unremarkably boring?

It sincerely was one thing playing a sport- to kindle adrenaline and hiss those strapped calves and springs.

It felt good man, good.

It was another to watch it.

The stadium was a spangled tannery of bright white spotlights and streaks of uniforms. The grass was too green, outstandly green that it felt like any second, Maria Rainer would start singing do-re-mi and all of Sound of the Music to her seven adopted children. Mary Poppins would sour at that or maybe she’d come down with an umbrella and complain that the equal trimmed nature of the grass was too inartistic.

Regardless, there was no imagination left to the idea that tonight wasn’t busy. It was busy, a whole purging rager of a night. Warps of crowds aerated close to the bottom rows near the jerseyed players and cheerleaders. Even the medium rows were crowded. He could hear students yowl, the fettered notes of trumpets honk, and the drums moil.

It was filmy and fumy, and even if he was slightly myopic, he could see the peach-blonde high pony tail of Claudia Jean and her long summer-gold hand vaunt a pom-pom. Bold and billowy gymnastics, she had this trance-like, textured bobcat smile when she cheered. When their eyes met briefly, his right eye gave away to a wink.

Not too far away were other familiar faces like his brother’s, Olivia’s, and Alexandra’s among them.

Atlas was always caterwauling on a thin line, mainly because he had decided that he built his own DNA. Comely features they shared between their parents were just that: features. Everything personality wise was a hallmark card: full of messages that seemed to spool of humor and laced lushes of nonsense.

He would never really tell Everest everything.

He could already feel his knee bobbing as soon as he sat down. Was he baptized? Did Dr. Pepper really help you live till you were 100? Where did that guy get his burger? That burger dripping with tangy drizzled sauce-

The theatre wasn’t just in his head. It was also everywhere around him; the nesters, the purging sport commentators, the food fanciers.

There was only one guy at peace and he was one bleacher above him. He was spread over the lined iron metal, a backpack slung under his neck as an uneven pillow. He was wearing a tagged garden of streetwear, and his eyes were locked close.

Everest never hesitated. He jabbered at once, “Hey man. How can you sleep like that? Can you even sleep like that? I hate sleeping. Alone, I mean. I love cuddling. I like being the little spoon.”

With full confection and energy, he rotated around on the bleacher to face him.

“You’ve got any friends on the field? Mine is that dude over there-” He swooshed on the axel of his spine and pridefully pointed towards the bench towards Drake, “And, the other’s late.”

“Do you play? Sports I mean,” he sustained, “I mean you’re wearing a pair of Yeezy’s. Woooaah, you have big feet. Perfect for balance, you know.”

“What’s your name? I’m Everest, by the way. Like the mountain. My mom picked it.”

His mouth indebted to his signature, dozy but wholesome wide grin.

Jordy nodded her head as Ms.Celia droned on about her getting out of her shell and getting to know more people. She would officially be living with her father’s relatives, once all the paperwork has been signed. Honestly, she knew she should have felt anything else other than amused. But with her being on her second Float pop within the last thirty minutes. All she could feel was amused, and couldn’t believe that she was attending a football game when she never attended one before. But when her cousin Vinny asked her if she was going, she just couldn’t bring herself to say no to him. She immediately told him that she would be there to support him.

She didn’t even realize that she had zoned out for a moment till Ms.Celia was snapping her fingers in front of her face. “Seriously… JD, You couldn’t even wait till you were out of the car to get high?” She said as made a face and lightly tugged on her ear, “You really shouldn’t be doing that in front of me. I am required to report any substance abuse to proper authorities.” Ms.Celia told her in an annoyed tone, while Jordy just smiled at her. Jordy couldn’t help the giggle that escaped her lips when Ms.Celia dropped her head against the steering wheel in exasperation. “Hurry up and get out…. Don’t forget to tell your cousin good luck for me.” Jordy nodded her head as she exited the car.
“Yes Ms.Celia, See you later~,”
Jordy said with a wave.

Jordy took out her phone and texted Vinny,
“Hey Cuz~ Just got to the stadium, Where are you at?”
She made her way to the gates of the stadium where she saw her school buddy. She quickly skipped over to Mei and softly threw her arm over Mei’s shoulders as she leaned against a bit.
“Hey, MeiMei! How’s your day been?”
She said, before taking notice of Mei’s brother. She waved at him, and quickly said
“Hey, What time is your team supposed to be in the lockers? I wanted to see if I could catch my cousin before the game starts to tell him good luck in person.”

Leo walked toward the stadium alongside Byron, his mind wandering back to Olivia. The text she sent earlier had thrown him off, but in a good way, as it always did. No matter what, his heart seemed to skip a beat every time her name popped up on his phone. He looked distracted as Byron spoke, his words about Olivia barely registering. The truth was Leo knew Olivia wasn’t exactly the type to settle down with someone, especially not him. He’d seen her with other guys and each time, it hurt, but he kept telling himself that maybe, just maybe, she’d feel something for him one day.

Leo laughed lightly at the punch to his shoulder. "Yeah, thanks. I’ll need that beer, for sure." He shook his head, but the smile didn’t quite reach his eyes. "I just... I don’t know, man. I’m not even sure what I’m doing half the time. It’s like I know she’s not interested in anything serious, but I can’t stop hoping. It's stupid."

As they walked, Leo’s thoughts circled back to Olivia. When they reached the stadium, Leo scanned the crowd, not sure what he was looking for. Maybe he was hoping to catch a glimpse of her, but when his eyes landed on her standing next to Atlas, his stomach dropped. He stood frozen for a moment, watching Olivia and Atlas too close for his liking. That knot in his chest tightened. He’d seen this play out before. He knew he had no claim on her and he told himself he was fine with it. Seeing her now, with him, Atlas of all people, brought that ugly jealousy to the surface.

Leo tried to mask the discomfort, but he couldn’t stop himself from glancing at Byron. “Why do I do this to myself, man?” He muttered, mostly to himself.

Byron didn’t need to respond. Leo knew the answer. Byron had warned him countless times to just move on, but Leo was the one who believed that things could change. That maybe Olivia would look at him one day the way he looked at her.

Leo stuffed his hands in his pockets and took a deep breath. As they moved closer, Leo felt his heart skip again when Olivia’s eyes briefly met his before she quickly looked away. There was something in her expression that he couldn’t quite read, but it wasn’t indifference. That small flicker of connection made him hesitate.

He opened his mouth to say something, but Byron was already addressing Atlas. Leo stayed quiet, knowing Byron had it handled. His friend’s sarcastic tone made Leo crack a small smile. Classic Byron. He could always be counted on to lighten the mood in these situations.

Leo hung back a bit, trying not to look too affected by the scene unfolding. He turned slightly, focusing on the crowd behind him, pretending to check his phone. His thoughts were entirely consumed by Olivia. He wanted to say something to her, to approach her, but with Atlas right there, it felt impossible. He heard Byron call out to Olivia and Alexandra, asking if they’d seen Lia. Leo kept his eyes fixed on his phone, not trusting himself to meet Olivia’s gaze again without giving away how much he was struggling inside.

“Man,” he muttered to himself under his breath, “this night’s gonna be harder than I thought.”

Leo's stomach twisted again as he looked and saw Olivia still standing there with Atlas, his heart sinking into his gut. Of all people, why him? He should have expected it, though. Olivia did this, ran from person to person, like she didn’t care about who she hurt or how she made people feel. It still stung and seeing her with Atlas only made it worse.

Atlas had dated Liana and broke her heart. That was enough of a reason for Leo to dislike the guy, but seeing him near Olivia now, it just made everything more unbearable. He clenched his jaw, hands tightening around his phone.

Byron’s words from earlier echoed in his mind. He appreciated his friend’s support, but it didn’t change how lost he felt around Olivia. Maybe he’d never really get over her. Still, Byron was right, he needed to stop just standing on the sidelines and let things happen. He took a deep breath, pushing aside the swirling mess of jealousy and frustration and walked up to the group. His heartbeat pounded in his chest, but he kept his face neutral as he approached. Byron was already there, and Leo decided to ease into the conversation.

"Hey, Liv," Leo said, his voice casual but holding that warmth that always seemed to find its way out around her. His gaze lingered on her for a moment before he turned to Alexandra, offering a small smile. "Alexandra." He acknowledged her with a slight nod, trying to maintain some level of normalcy.

His eyes shifted to Atlas briefly, but Leo said nothing to him. He had no interest in striking up any kind of conversation with him, especially after everything with his sister. Even the sight of Atlas was enough to stir up old feelings of protectiveness and resentment, but now wasn’t the time to address that, not here, not in front of everyone. He just… couldn’t deal with that right now. He focused on Olivia instead, feeling that familiar tug of wanting to say more but hesitating. There was always this invisible wall between them, something he couldn’t break through.

Claudia Jean

Junwoo was taken back a little. A slight level of confusion across his facial frame. Was this her actual, and usual, giddy self? Or was this because she had that uniform on. Like a superhero of sorts, playing a persona dependent on the attire. An amiable smirk gracing his lips. Whatever it was, he liked it. Was different from the norm, and Junwoo liked
‘different.’

If he’s honest with himself, he almost mutters
‘what drugs are keeping that motor going?’
Curious if it was an obtainable product for his
‘empire.’
But of course he kept his lips shut, in regards to that at least.

Running his hands through his ebony hair gently he muttered, with a smooth smirk
“Might, could go all the way?”
Well that was a bit undeniable.

He could tell, he was going to enjoy this conversation.
“Pleasure is mine though Miss Claudia Jean Taylor”
He stated softly
“Excuse my slight level of ignorance but where are you from? I’m not from around here and that accent tells me that neither are you.”
If everyone, from where she’s from, acts like her. He needed to take a trip there. It’d be an enjoyable place to sit upon a bench, and just watch.

She reminded him of a particular character from a movie.

He couldn’t quite remember the particular movie but she was ironically a blonde lawyer in an Ivy League University. That’s the main reason why Junwoo was curious if the uniform made her act in a different manner.
“I hope I’m not keeping you from anything in particular. You just caught my attention, your charisma is definitely outside the norm. American high school kids seem to be very… singularly minded. If that makes sense?”

He wasn’t going to deny it helped his bottom dollar. The rest of the world's perception of America, at least in the manner of high school, from what Junwoo had been experiencing, was correct. The rest of the world was correct about Americans. Maybe this particular high school was a bad representation of a typical American high school. Honestly, Junwoo had hoped so. Otherwise American’s should be concerned about the coming 5 to 10 years.

“Don’t get me wrong though, there are those outside the norm. Which is why I had to introduce myself. You’re definitely outside the norm.”
Junwoo had a general understanding of American football, and wanted to keep this particular conversation going. But he would put the ball in her court.
“If I’m honest, I mentioned the football team's potential as a break the ice comment. I haven’t the slightest understanding of American Football. Care to explain it? That said, nor do I understand Cheerleading, outside the obvious. So if you’re quite busy I can take a raincheck as well.”

He wanted to continue this conversation, but hadn’t a desire to impose.

Atlas wasn't sure if Alexandra could stomp any lower on his ego as she already did, he was kind of taken back by her reaction and awkwardly continued standing there as she shot an annoyed glance his way.
Sure, it didn't make her any less hot even when she was yelling at him but what was now left of his courage liquor was very little.

A hard stab in his side made him change his gaze back to where it initially came for. She was jealous. He couldn't hide a small smirk before responding to the two ladies and Atlas realized there weren't many right things to say right now as they were both looking at him like they wanted him dead and buried.

'I wasn't exactly flirting with you,' Atlas mumbled under his breath before continueing and rubbing his side a little dramatically while looking at Olivia. It actually hurt.
'I think it's really sweet you're trying to help me Liv but I know what I'm doing,' he gave her a wink and reached in his backpocket for a lighter. He waited for Olivia who looked like she wanted to say something but instead she went silent, Atlas followed her gaze and instead of falling silence, he had a hard time to not look too dissapointed.

Atlas tried not to seem too shaken up by Byron's comment but on the inside he wanted to lock himself up and never get out again. Punching him in the face also didn't seem that bad but he knew somewhere deep down he'd never win. Fuck.

Instead of saying anything, he gave him a very sarcastic smile back as he put his arm subtly around Olivia's waist. Leo was staring him down this entire time and Atlas didn't really make any eye contact with him. It was not like the two of them had a bad connection but things were awkward since Atlas broke up with Lia. Yes, maybe he shouldn't have done it over a text message but mistakes happen, he should get over it, is what Atlas thought.

When Byron mentioned Lia and directed the question to the two girls standing right beside him, Atlas shook his head as if he would know where Lia was. This was also the moment for Leo to acknowledge anyone but him, it felt as if everyone wanted him to leave except for Olivia.
Luckily for Atlas, he was really good at pretending that it didn't hurt him at all and so he lit up his cigarette as if he just spinned the wheel of fortune - looking like a real, handsome salesman, as junwoo would say - and oblivious to the adults standing ten feet away from them, pulled out the little bag of pills out of his cargo pockets, holding it in the air and waving it in front of them while his other hand was still steady around Olivia's waist.

'Just know what you're missing out on, I am going to enjoy this game,' he added with a big, forced grin on his face, putting the little transparent bag back in his pocket. 'And I guess, I'll see you tonight Olivia,' finally letting go of her waist and stepping a few steps back.

'We'll have fun,' he added, giving a wink and avoiding any looks from the two gentleman still staring him down. It felt like the circle of life and Atlas was the shark and those two were the surfers who thought they could mess with him but unlike a shark, Atlas didn't have a killer instinct or anything near confidence. 'Maybe I'll see you tonight,' he added pointing to Alex and then gave an awkward smile to Leo. What was he doing here, anyway? He could get why Byron would come see and visit Alex but Atlas would live on the moon before Olivia wanted anything to do with Leo. That's for sure.

Alexandra, Leo, and atlas

Olivia felt Atlas' arm slide around her waist, after what had happened today with Alexandra it seemed to cut off any even slight feelings she could have had for Atlas. If anything she wanted to pull away rather quickly for him, especially as his dumbass waved around the product practically asking the cop to turn them in.

- Sheesh Atlas if you want to go to jail that bad might as well waltz in and tell them what we’ve been doing…dumbass! -

Olivia glanced over at Byron, she didn't know him well, they hadn't ever exactly shared a conversation, so she did not hold much against him. She shook his head and answered his question, “No, I haven't seen her around…admidently don't exactly know her much either” she said with a slight shrug. She hoped it didn't show but she really was beginning to get rather annoyed with Atlas and his idiotic antics.

However, all the slight anger and annoyance that had formed in her disappeared when she heard her nickname come from Leo, her green eyes shifted to find him. She didn't know what it was, many people if not everyone who knew her called her Liv. But, there was something different in the way he said it, something that felt so..natural, so real. Maybe it was the way it rolled off his tongue, or maybe it was the small smile that was barely noticeable unless you looked close enough, or maybe it was just how his eyes held her own…just for a second yet it felt so much longer.

Her eyes drifted away as he addressed Alexandra with ease, nothing like what Atlas had done. It was as bright as day that he was so different from Atlas. She felt a tug at her wanting to walk over and spend the rest of the game..maybe the day talking to Leo. They were good at that, their conversations seemed to flow naturally. Many nights she remembered when shed ask him to come over, and they'd spend the night either talking and she'd get the time to vent since he really did listen to her…or they'd go right out her window and look at the stars…the silence between them comfortable and speaking more volumes than any words could.

But, being here in Atlas arms she almost felt like a stranger to him…lucky enough for her she felt Atlas arm finally give away, and he began walking off hinting at another night. Where instead of turning him down she just gave him a slight smile. “Yeah we’ll see about that”

- it was so not happening -

Her eyes darted back over to Alexandra, “sorry…my big mouth seemed to spawn the two in…remind me next time to be more careful, maybe code names would be better then they wouldn't pop out of nowhere” she shrugged a smirk playing on her lips. Her eyes however seemed to drift over to where Leo was before she looked back over at Alexandra. “How about we catch up after the game…after all I came to support you, you'll do great…you always do” she said giving her friend a warm smile. Sure Olivia tended to sleep around and never stick with one person, but with her friends they were a line she never crossed, she always made sure they were alright before leaving…that if she could offer any kind of help or a shoulder or a helping hand she would no matter what. Until they break that trust. But until then she'd be their right hand.

She waved her friend one last goodbye before she drifted over to Leo's side. A familiar one…but after what had happened, maybe the air was a bit more awkward than she'd expect. She rested her back against the fence for a second not saying anything before she smiled.

“I didn't think I’d see you,” she said playfully. “Not that I like…needed or wanted too” she mumbled slightly under her breath. Her eyes then drifted over to him. “I'm glad you're here though…there's a lot of people here and it's nice to have a familiar face…a familiar person to lean on” she said, tucking a small strand of her loose hair behind her ear absentmindedly.

“I know it's only the start of the school year but everything feels…different like it's all…changing so fast…or maybe it's just me” she shrugged shed be lying if she said she wasn't thinking of this being leos last year…and that after he may no longer be anywhere near here…she'd lose him…. Maybe that's why every year she only seemed more nervous, more anxious rather than excited.

It was almost ridiculous how more people were joining their conversation. What had started as just her and Olivia talking had turned into one guy selling drugs and acting full of himself, another guy from Olivia’s drama who had the look of a sad puppy who had just lost their owner, and then there was Byron asking for Dahlia. The more Alexandra thought about it, the less it made sense why all of them were gathered at that moment.

And it didn’t make sense because, meanwhile, Olivia and Atlas were still bickering about him showing off the drugs he had on him. So while those two finished their little exchange, Alexandra’s attention shifted to Byron—also known as Connor’s brother and Lia’s boyfriend. In other circumstances, Alexandra wouldn’t have minded him or paid him any attention.

Still, he was somehow part of her life because he was involved with the people she had a bond with, though she couldn’t say they were close. Did she dislike him? Not really; she just found him a bit annoying because of his try-hard persona. But whatever Lia saw in him, Alexandra wasn’t going to judge—well, maybe just a bit, but she wouldn’t say it out loud. Some things were better kept to oneself.

“We arrived together, but I haven’t seen her in a bit. She kind of went that way after saying she’d catch up with us in a moment. Not sure what she’s been up to since then,”
Alexandra replied honestly. She suspected Byron would start thinking she wasn’t telling the whole truth because if Lia wasn’t exactly with him or with her, it would probably make him go crazy—especially since Lia had already lied to him, saying she was at her house. But again, if she wasn’t involved, it wasn’t her problem. Though Alexandra was preparing herself to be dragged into whatever mess those two would end up having.

Not too long after replying to Byron, her attention returned to Olivia, who was now saying her goodbyes.
“Sure, let’s do that. I guess I’ll see you around then. I should get going too. I want to meet with Connor before the game starts,”
she said before walking away in hopes of finding her boyfriend. It didn’t take her long to find him, but once again, she was met with another group of people.

Tavon responded to her text quickly so she replied to him.

“Well, I’M glad you came. I’ll be over there soon.”

Suddenly Mei felt gentle pressure around her shoulders and in her ear was a familiar voice singing out her name, well, the name she had dubbed Mei anyway.

Jordyn.

Mei felt her heart flutter in her chest, her face felt hotter than usual, and she found herself somewhat lost for words, as if she had been transported back in time. She’d only known this girl for a blip, 6 short months when they found themselves in the same group foster home, but Mei credits this girl to her very survival there. When the sting of her mother and sisters’ death was still all consuming, and her father has abandoned her to the system, Jordyn had been her support, her safety blanket, her protector, her only friend.

Jordyn hadn’t recognised her, but how could she? The girl she knew was non-speaking, communicated only with a pen and paper. The girl she knew was malnourished and weak. The girl she knew could not hide her disability from others. Li Mei had come such a long way since then.

You need to say something, for god sake

Her lips upturned into a warm smile as Jordyn released her and waved at Connor. “Jordyn, hello!” She replied in a voice that was far more animated than her usual flat affect. “Oh, my day has been alright-“ She said replied as casually as she could to the social nicety while her mind raced a million miles a minute. I don't even sound like myself. She noticed. She was standing with a relaxed posture, her arms resting by her sides, she was doing the social dance correctly, she was smiling to be polite and friendly and approachable.

Jordyn turned to Connor asking him about when the game starts. Mei tried to collect herself while they had their brief exchange. Should Mei reveal the truth to Jordyn? Yes of course she should. So what was stopping her? She suddenly realised what she was feeling. Shame. Was she ashamed of how she was back when Jordyn had really met her? Was she worried that Jordyn would see her differently. See her as someone small… weak… helpless. Did she want a fresh start, a clean slate?

“Oh, uh, Jordyn! Before you go…” She rummaged in her backpack, and eventually produced a fist full of little keychains with pom poms she’d made from wool. She’d figured out how to do it at the start of the week. Originally it was because she though that she’d make one for Alexa that resembled her cheer pompoms, but then it became kind of cathartic and then she’d ended up making like 50 of them in all sorts of colours. Alexa's was slightly different than the others, she kept that one in her pocket seperate. It had two pompoms, one amber and one black, attached to a little silver chain. “I’ve been making these, you can pick your favourite colour if you like them... You too Connor” Her heartrate quickened, nervous Jordyn might think it was either childish or cringeworthy, Connor was of course used to her constantly learning some new crafty or DIY type hobby. “Also, I’m going to sit with my friend Tavon, you are welcome to come and sit with us, uh, did I give you my number already? You can text me.” What the heck was happening to her, her hands were sweaty? Her cheeks, all the way to her ears felt hot. She was stumbling over her words.

She heard someone else approach and looked up to see Connor's girlfriend approaching "Oh, Alexa" Her grin was kind of sheepish "I hoped I'd see you, um, good luck out there, I made you this" There was no going back now, she had all her little trinkets out already. She fished for the specific one she's made to look like Alexa's amber and black cheer pompoms, and presented it to her. Nope, this is getting too much She thought, feeling familiar signs of stress. Too many people looking at her who she very much cared what they thought about her. "Anyway um, I'd better go and find him" She squeaked, her social mask was beginning to drop already. She didn't have to worry about it with Connor, who'd seen her at her worst plenty of times, but she wasn't good with group conversations. She got lost in them, missed all her opportunity's to speak.

Once she had said her goodbyes, and put away her things, she hastily began to disappear into the crowd. She opened up her phone again to text Tavon. Even though she hadn't known him for long, her mask didn't seem necessary around him. He'd met her in the middle of probably her least socially acceptable special interest, and then she'd monologed at him about it. She smiled to herself, already she was calming down. They still didn't know all to much about one another, but they were each others peace and quiet... each others safe space to just be.

"On my way" she pressed send and made her way towards the bleachers. Inside the roar of the crowd hit her like a tonne of bricks, she caught her breath, took herself to the wall, and focused on breathing. In and out, slowly. Grab your headphones. You're fine. You're ok. Li found them in her bag, placed them over her head and switched them to active noise canceling. The sound dulled, and Li Mei could continue.
