Eliza was crying because she didn't know how to help.
Alexander felt his chest tighten and he dropped the phone, gasping for air. "Help..." Alexander whispered before passing out.
Eliza sobbed and tried to scream into the phone to get someone there to hear her and come to help him.
No one came, no one heard. Alexander was sound asleep on the bed, exhausted, the phone next to his head as he slept.
Eliza just sobbed helplessly, eventually having to yet again be sedated.
Alexander woke up an hour later. He looked at the phone and picked it up. "Hello?" he asked, confused.
Eliza didn't answer but the sound of nurses talking about her was audible.
"This girl is crazy. No wonder she tried to kill herself."
"I know, it'd probably be better for her family if she just died."
Little did they know that Eliza was awake but not showing it.
Alexander heard this and went pale. "Eliza, if you're awake, don't listen to them." Alexander said into the phone. "It wouldn't be better for anyone if you died. I can't live without you. Eliza, are you there?"
Eliza was crying silently and the nurses left the room after a few minutes. She broke down and sobbed.
Alexander heard the sobs and felt his heart break. "Eliza, don't cry!" he pleaded through the phone.
Eliza only cried harder. "Th-they're right. That's why only you v-visited me after the first night."
"No, no! That's not true!" Alexander pleaded. "I love you so much! Eliza, don't listen to them!"
"No one loves me except you, and they still might make you leave." she cried.
"That's not true!" Alexander sobbed. "You have a family! You have me!"
She shook her head and cried. A nurse walked in and told her she had visitors. Eliza waited to see who was there and it was the three girls who had been antagonizing her. They began to relentlessly mock her, calling her a crippled whore and other terrible things.
Alexander felt so useless. He had no idea what to do to make this better. Peggy, on the other hand, did. She was going up to say hi to her sister when the three girls started mocking Eliza. Instead of shouting at them or reasoning with them, Peggy grabbed a nearby metal bedpan and smacked the first girl on the back of the head with it, effectively knocking her out. Peggy then proceeded to beat up the last two.
Eliza gasped when Peggy came in so suddenly and beat the three girls until they ran off, one of them carrying the unconscious one. "Peggy…" Eliza cried.
Peggy went to Eliza and sat next to her. "Hey..." She whispered.
Eliza took her hand and began to apologize profusely.
"Sh, don't apologize. You've done nothing wrong."
"Peggy why are they so terrible?" she cried. "The nurses even said I should have died."
"They are so terrible because they are less than you. You are above them."
"I can't even walk Peggy. I'm just going to be a burden on you guys. Daddy would probably be happy if I was gone. He wouldn't have to deal with me anymore."
"Don't say that." Peggy whispered. "Don't you dare talk like that. You aren't a burden."
"I'm useless!"
